Alex Jones’ wildly popular suite of Infowars supplements probably won’t kill you, but extensive tests provided to BuzzFeed News have shown that they’re little more than overpriced and ineffective blends of vitamins and minerals that have been sold in stores for ages.

” CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — There was nothing haphazard about the violence that erupted today in this bucolic town in Virginia’s heartland. At about 10 a.m. today, at one of countless such confrontations, an angry mob of white supremacists formed a battle line across from a group of counter-protesters, many of them older and gray-haired, who had gathered near a church parking lot. On command from their leader, the young men charged and pummeled their ideological foes with abandon. One woman was hurled to the pavement, and the blood from her bruised head was instantly visible.

Standing nearby, an assortment of Virginia State Police troopers and Charlottesville police wearing protective gear watched silently from behind an array of metal barricades — and did nothing.

It was a scene that played out over and over in Charlottesville as law enforcement confronted the largest public gathering of white supremacists in decades. …”

The declaration made state resources available to manage the demonstrations.

Andy Lack is interested in making MSNBC into FOX News Channel 2. He is not interested in presentation of the news. Despite his three evening hosts drawing the highest ratings in television (Maddow, O’Donnell, Hayes), Lack is insisting on either magic balancefairyism or conservative light.

Pat Robertson, the founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and a familiar face on its flagship program The 700 Club, has been hospitalized, CBN announced Friday.

The 87-year-old, who also founded the private Christian university Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was hospitalized after falling while horseback riding.

“Horseback riding is one of Robertson’s greatest passions and at the age of 87 still enjoys riding on a regular basis,” said CBN, a 55-year-old global ministry.

FOX News Channel’s Website is reporting the conservative terror attack in Virginia mostly neutrally.

foxnews.com

I don’t know how their television network is reporting it, as I don’t own a television and we have no cable service here.

Way down at the bottom of the FOX article:

The crash sparked calls from several Republican lawmakers for a federal investigation of what they described as a domestic terror attack. However, federal law enforcement officials told Fox News that they were not yet responding because it was not clear the situation rose to that level.

“I thought it had something to do with Trump. Trump’s not a white supremacist,” Bloom said.

“He had an African-American friend so …,” she said before her voice trailed off. She added that she’d be surprised if her son’s views were that far right.

Well, Ms. Yates is wrong. A significant portion of the nation’s electorate is exactly like the poison spewed by Nazis and Klansmen.

Today might be different if after the Confederacy was defeated, they were tried as traitors. I’m not sure though, since plenty of Nazis were convicted in Nuremberg and the ideology still lives on today.

“America” in the abstract has always been more than the people at any given time, the most obvious example being our founding fathers talking about freedom.

They were talking about freedom (and voting rights) for white property owning men.

Half the population (women) did not get the right to vote whether they owned property or not until 1920.

“America” has always included the ideas expressed in today’s act of terrorism by a conservative. Before it was Jim Crow and lynchings, before that the Civil War, before that the extermination of Native Americans, and before that conservatives supported the Crown.

Ms. Yates is wrong. America includes all of that.

We need to be psychologically prepared when it happens. In particular, we will need to be prepared to oppose the drastic responses that opportunistic politicians will invariably propose. Nazi marches are protected by the first amendment, and, as long as they’re not violent, they’re allowed. Countering these will require larger crowds opposing them, to the point they avoid marching. In 1988, a KKK march through Abilene was canceled after they realized the counter-protest would be bigger than they were.

re: #127 Patricia Kayden

Hmmm. Forgot about the ACLU’s support of this mess.

The American Civil Liberties Union does not support fascism or white nationalism. They support the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Absent a ruling from the Supreme Court that such speech (not the subsequent violence) or an amendment to the Constitution, hate speech is protected I Amendment speech.

If you were to advance an amendment prohibiting hate speech, you would necessarily need the government to decide what hate speech is. At that instant, the notion of free speech is out the window.

The ACLU is not the problem here. Suppose for instance a person advocating abortion rights under such a putative “hate speech” amendment is considered engaging in hate speech against “unborn children.”

Balafon is right. Yes: The limit is advocating for violence. Absent an explicit call for violence, speech is protected.

Back to the Bible, which explicitly advocates for violence (both Testaments). Should the Bible be outlawed as hate speech?

Who is advocating for white supremacists here? I’m advocating for free speech.

Throughout the slavery period and subsequent secession of Dixie states, every state cited the Bible as justification for both slavery and secession.

I do not advocate outlawing the Bible as hate speech, though I view it as such. I advocate putting forth better ideas.

Perhaps I am wrong here. Perhaps better ideas cannot win in a free society. But the second the government is outlawing what constitutes free speech, then we do not have free speech.

Well, as a parent, I can understand how, if my son engaged in a heinous act, it would be difficult to condemn him. (I guess that falls under the Christian rubric “hate the sin, love the sinner.”)

Nevertheless, I can’t imagine myself telling the press “Trump can’t be a racist, he has a black friend.”

I’d love to censor the hell out of Fox News and take hate radio off the air, but we have to be realistic here. If we let the government get in the business of picking and choosing what speech is allowed, we aren’t going to like the results. Wingnuts will capture the Office of the Censor and we’ll be even more screwed than we are now. Especially at the state level. Imagine what the red states would be like with state-level thought control fully in place.

Edited to add: I should also say that my faith that good ideas will win out over bad ideas in a society with free speech is presently non-existent, although I would like for that to be true. So I’m perfectly prepared to entertain the idea of straight up government censorship if a case can be made that it would be a net benefit.

The Constitution is not intended to be a suicide pact …

An interesting statement.

I’ve written before that I think the Constitution is out of date. It’s an 18th century effort which was designed with that problem you’ve pointed out.

The framers had to deal with the problem that the newly declared nation-state of the US might indeed commit suicide if they couldn’t get all the participants to agree.

It turns out that some of the new states’ representatives to the constitutional writing process were a bit AWOL. There was less involvement by the consensus than what we might presume now.

Even in the late 1780s the problem was the differences among the new states, and that not all citizens of the new country indeed thought the same thing about their new country.

The sort of forced knitting together of one legal document which would bind the states results in some gross compromises, from which we’re still suffering today.

re: #128 Belafon

I’m not 100% on this, but one of the things that was drifting about Charlottesville today was that the “marchers” largely ignored the safety instructions and the conditions set by their permit.

If this is true, then there is both a specific and general need to look at how there’s an unequal application of rigour (vetting) and force when dealing with crowds…and it should be shouted to the skies that these fucking assholes and their ilk were utterly contemptuous of the police, the law of the land, and the community they assembled in.

Lots of people want to believe that the “alt-right” fall inside the spectrum of normal behavior because it’s scary—and contrary to white America’s understanding of what America is. Like many scared, uncertain people, they’re cleaving to any data point that suggests everything is fine. (More generally, this explains the banality that allows the more sinister excuse making for “lone wolf” white supremacists, sovereign citizens, etc.)

Emphasizing that this is what fascists do is our best chance to illustrate the point. It’s machiavellian, but unfortunately most people don’t really have the strength of principles or the intellectual appreciation of the threat of fascism-as-ethos.

Law enforcement needs to stop being indulgent about armed white dudes engaged in posturing and threats. Local governments need to start saying “fuck off” when people like this want to assemble. Part of the danger is how unequally freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are applied, always in favor of this kind of reactionary impulse.

Our nation’s laws punish actions, not ideas. You get punished for robbing a bank, for example, or planning to rob a bank, not thinking about robbing a bank.

There is the problem of “stochastic terrorism” (the idea that stoking violent rhetoric leads to violence, such as seen in Rwanda or Yugoslavia). Absent a law prohibiting stochastic terrorism (which would be troublesome to define) I am not sure how to deal with such speech other than more speech.

If there was a law calling certain rhetoric hate speech not deserving of protection or deserving jail time, you can bet it would be applied to people advocating for a woman’s right to seek abortion, for example.

A good example of this is that the bill of rights as originally understood was mainly limitations on the power of Federal government (e.g., Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of speech…). So as of the founding, the states could censor as they pleased within their borders, if allowed by the state constitution. It wasn’t until passage of the 14th amendment that the guarantees in the bill of rights were uniformly applied to the states, and that only happened because of the upheavals of the civil war era.

Lagniappe: all of the above may amount to pissing in the wind, because there is a racial dimension to this.

What white people do is tagged as “normal”—or at least “more acceptable.” And when whites and non-whites do the same transgressive things, the former is given allowances withheld from the latter.

This trend is working in the favor of the alt-right. No matter how ugly they get, the heuristic is that the “other”—brown folks protesting, getting mad, maybe not behaving perfectly decorous—are worse or the origin of the problem.

I look at this face — the guy who drove the car — and … I feel sorry for the asshole loser that he appears to be. I actually want to hate him (for which I am ashamed) but I can’t. I guess I’ll save that for his surroundings.

I don’t want to hate him. (I do want to see him tried, and if found guilty, punished.)

I hate the ideology that warps young people into such hateful characters they would murder their fellow citizens who disagree with their opinions.

No. According to Mr. Trump, there were many violent sides, not two. (He condemned violence from many sides in his statement this afternoon.)

In the real world, there was only one violent side (the side that advocates driving over protesters). That would be the GOP (as evidenced by legislation brought in states such as South Dakota and Tennessee absolving people who do that).

Yes: The limit is advocating for violence. Absent an explicit call for violence, speech is protected.

Back to the Bible, which explicitly advocates for violence (both Testaments). Should the Bible be outlawed as hate speech?

No, but the Koran should!

No, but the Koran should!

And there is the exact reason why I oppose the idea of the government deciding what is hate speech and what is not (aside from speech supporting abortion rights or contraception, which I imagine would be a no-brainer for conservatives to condemn).

If you can condemn one religious belief as “hate speech” and make it illegal (despite explicit protections of the I Amendment) you can condemn any religious belief (or worse, demand religious belief - see Saudi Arabia declaring atheism as advocating for terrorism, or the Malaysian MP yesterday calling for hunting down and killing atheists).

The counter-argument (or rather, talking point) is that America is a CHRISTIAN nation and these other, “lesser” do not enjoy any Constitutional protections.

And the counter argument to that is the Constitution in no place names any religious faith, but does state there shall be no religious test for public office.

(That latter part was a bone of contention when I was elected, as the state constitution says you have to take an oath that includes “so help me God.” I noted to the village attorney that was unconstitutional and I would not do it. He contacted the state attorney general, who gave me a “dispensation” to affirm my oath rather than swear to God.)

Pardon me, but I thought you hated Twitter with every ounce of your being and would never post tweets you found at LGF.

I reconsidered my position after much discussion here.

I will not open a Twitter account, for reasons I have given here before.

However, some people’s posts to Twitter are worthwhile reading.

Thus, after consideration of what people have suggested here about Twitter here to me, I will repost something I find worthwhile, but I will not join the service.

I suppose that is similar to me reposting something I find at a religious site (which I have also done). I am not a religious person, but sometimes a religious Website will post something I find interesting (or horrendous).

I admit my previous absolutist position about Twitter was insufficient. It does no good to ignore social media sites such as Twitter or Facebook (particularly when they are such hotbeds of fascism).

Thus, I admit my position about posting or reading tweets was wrong. Ignoring a problem will not make it go away.

Since I promised after Aminah’s [Curious Lurker’s] untimely passing here I would post a guinea pig a day in her memory (since she told me she loved guinea pigs as do I), I will post another. The world needs more cute guinea pig posts.

Holding up 1A as infallible seems almost like a weird faith to me.

It’s a failure of imagination to not at least question it and wonder if dysfunctional ass systemic forces haven’t come to mean that application is unequal. It might require some affirmative thought and action to make a good faith effort at seeing an important part of the picture here.

It’s such an easy crutch.
As if the Constitution hasn’t been altered (speak in support of it even if it doesn’t have a chance in hell in our lifetime)…
As if Germany hasn’t provided some guidance (nobody is saying the way they do it fits here, but it’s something)…
As if it’s beyond our collective will to move the narrative (we’ve done it before)
As if folks don’t examine 2A all the time with respect to how it terrorizes…
As if we can’t expect advocacy groups to represent the truly marginalized to exploit the right balance of 1A and morality…
As if we can’t see the incitement prejudice…
As if we can’t see the unequal protection…
As if we can’t see the unequal punishment via biased interpretation…

The right wing as we know and loathe it today goes back to the late 50s, when the Hunt brothers, Phyllis Schlafly, and Robert Welch picked up the pieces after Joe McCarthy’s fall and combined them with southern racism, religious zeal, and Ayn Rand’s economic fantasies. They had many antecedents, of course, but this “new right,” as it was called, is where today’s right wing originated as a continuous, organized political movement.

We can’t eradicate it; all we can do is force them to hide again because they’re repugnant to the majority. The problem with that is that they are a huge chunk of the nation and a vast majority of the GOP.

Things won’t change while Turtle is majority leader and letting his racist hate of Obama and his legacy drive the legislative agenda.

Things won’t change while state governors like Walker can gerrymander their control over the states, destroy voting rights and use the prison system as a way to keep minorities oppressed (Wisconsin has the highest rate of black incarceration and is near the top in Native American incarceration IIRC.)

Things won’t change while Nazis like Bannon & Gorka aren’t being perp walked out of the White House, much less their racist boss.

Things won’t change while the cops are filled with racists and are nothing but the enemy of minorities and freedom.

What it will take is a real revolution (unlike the bernie bro’s blathering) and that would require too much bloodshed for most Americans to be willing to pay.

This should be our mantra. The Confederacy shouldn’t be an issue in 2017 because its symbols should never have been tolerated on public land in the first place. This country tolerates racism way too much on so many damn levels. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be born in this country and live with this anti-Black nonsense for my entire life.

Plague has never been wiped out. Rick Wilson’s snarky “2017 y’all” doesn’t really mean anything. The only diseases ever wiped out are smallpox and rinderpest (a livestock disease).

Well, the bacterium Yersinia pestis is out there and staying happy in its reservoir, which is the flea; modern man has this thing called hygiene, so the relevant human vector, the rat, isn’t allowed in our house. And, Y. pestis is quite susceptible to antibiotics. Prairie dogs aren’t a great great vector for human infection, either.

The only positive thing coming out of Charlottesville debacle is that it is compelling people to take sides, they can no longer hide behind wishy-washy concepts like “alt-right” or “racial realist”.

Just like it took Dylan Root with his Confederate flag to finally convince people that such a symbol had to place flying over a government buildings in America.

If you want to put these sorts of memorials up on private property, then that is your right. They just have no place on public property, save at a museum or a battlefield memorial -
accompanied by a clear reference to who these people were and what they were fighting for.

i am hopeful.

i used to be concerned trump would be less than a so-so president, get his picture painted and hung on the wall with the others and we’d have to look at him through eternity as a mediocre “one of the few”. like i used to think of gwb.

with almost no help, he has cemented his place in history separate and apart from the other 44. i am no longer worried.

and i have faith in mankind as a whole both nationally and world wide.

this isn’t ‘clever’. it’s cowardice

im quoting the whole paragragh because its short:

Many Republicans have discovered that holding town hall meetings with constituents can lead to angry crowds asking hostile questions. One way to avoid this situation—in fact, the most popular one—is to hide and not meet constituents at all. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) is trying another way: asking constituents to submit their questions in advance and then holding a lottery to determine who gets an invitation to attend. The congressman’s website says that people will be selected at random, but it isn’t hard to imagine that the nature of the question will play a (big) role in determining who gets in. After all, why would they need to submit their question in advance if that was not the case? This could be a technique to get a large crowd that is friendly and keep opponents out. Depending how it goes, other Republicans may emulate Fitzpatrick later. (V)

they are not representing districts, or states, or whatever. they are representing only those who stroke them. they are ignoring and writing off everyone else, including their angry supporters.

Even in the late 1780s the problem was the differences among the new states, and that not all citizens of the new country indeed thought the same thing about their new country.

The sort of forced knitting together of one legal document which would bind the states results in some gross compromises, from which we’re still suffering today.

We are seeing the same dynamic play out today in Obamacare, flawed because of the compromises required to gain agreement, repairs hobbled by the same difficulties.

One thing, I sure hope all the little nazis that are being outed and then connected to some of the Republican politicians are being logged in memory for use in a few months when Congressional races start to heat up.

All of this needs to be sewn up into suits every Republican will be wearing next election. It needs to be clear they wear it well.

And of course the idiot from Maumee Ohio that drove his car into the crowd can go straight to hell. He will be in good company with all the other nazis currently there.

He was motivated enough to drive all the way to Charlottesville to join in. And then obviously he got so full of rage he decided to become a terrorist.

And in a weird twist…another Ohioan was there protesting the White Nationalist and was one of the 19 people injured by the other Ohioan. I just heard on the news he is listed in good condition.

I’d imagine he’s golfing right now he won’t feel the need to tweet until after lunch?

He hates bad press and there is a special amount of it directed at him right now.
I just wonder who he will blame for the bad reception?

Well, unfortunately for the nation, there IS a way Trump could turn that “bad press” around. With a normal President, one would imagine that someone - anyone - in his inner circle is finally going to blow: and try to drum it into the Chief’s head that being perceived as coddling or ignoring actual, violent, murderous Nazis here in the US is going to be bad - REALLY bad - for his general image.
And get him to do somethinh about by it going public and making a well-written, well-crafted address unequivocally condemning the Nazis and fascists, unequivocally standing up FOR everybody’s right to protest and AGAINST any form of hatred or violence, and -like a few of his GOP pals already have, state flatly that white-supremacist ideology has no place in the political dialog in this country. Period.
Of course, it ,would all be BS PR nonsense, but the lapdog media and the lickspittle Congress would go wild for it, we would be barraged with another tsunami of horseshit about “Trump turning Presidential”, it would drive a lot of the negative coverage right out of the news, and (most importantly) might boost his approval ratings.
But then, I’m not sure my fears might be realized: it’s Donald Trump…

EDIT: I see from Josh Marshall’s cite in #349 that (presuming that that’s a WH release) that maybe they’re already trying this tack. But badly, as usual….

Yep. BS PR like I said: but for once his base can’t be the audience. They’ll still be there, ignoring the flap and re-filling their tiki torches, but as long as the current Administration is in the WH! Numbers games. He won by a total of 70000 votes in like 4 states. Every single vote matters. If 1 nutjobs gets pissed enough to not support him I’ll take it.

Can’t see many people who didn’t vote for him telling themselves his condemnation is presidential and change.

It’s the squishy middle and abstainers that need to be persuaded and a late apology won’t do that.

We’re supposed to be a self-policing community. Anymouse at one time said he’d ignore Twitter and refrain from posting tweets because of his beliefs about the service. He was actually very good about that promise, until tonight (as far as I’ve seen). I call him out and I’m being aggressive.

Okay. Right on!

Then I’ll be the second. The non stop negative comments to another poster is what I call online bullying. Maybe it is something else, but having been the recipient of same many moons ago it looks very similar.

Organizational structure

“…Dillon Irizarry, a military veteran from New Mexico, has been leading the group since early 2016. During a speech at the previously mentioned neo-Nazi gathering in Kentucky, Irizarry said that VA started in California two years ago and that he took over leadership about a year ago. Irizarry also said that the “future is about the youth” and (for that reason) his group base is 18 to 24 years old. At the time, he also claimed approximately 200 members, in 20 different states.
Dillon Irizarry

There are small, active VA chapters in Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.”

VA has some paramilitary characteristics. In states with open carry laws, Irizarry, who uses the title Commander, and several other members have openly carried firearms during rallies and protests. The standard uniform for members consists of khaki pants and a white polo.

re: #149 The Ghost of a Flea

There’s definitely a mix of both taking advantage of law to help their noxious cause and laws being created by Republicans - being allowed to walk around with rifles - that led to yesterday. And that leaves only so much that can be done. Local law enforcement could have been very strict and gone after them for any violation, which could have also been used the wrong way to keep counterprotesters away. Then these groups could have bragged about being unopposed.

I can only talk about this in terms of history, since I’m a 47 year old white male, but from what I’ve seen and read, the ways to defeat this is for people to show up to declare to these idiots that they are not the only ones here, to show in larger numbers so that these cowards find out they’re not the majority and force them back under their rocks, and elect people who will defend everyone.

The Nazis drove to Charlottesville. Just like people started tracking that church that was protesting at military funerals, some group needs to track them and help organize larger protests. I would donate, Now if they try that shit in Dallas, I will show up to counter-protest.

Our laws benefit those who want to maintain the status quo, and make moving away from that hard. It’s both good and bad: the very same laws are keeping Trump and republicans in check. But the will of the people has been a very big driver. I think too many people on the left forgot all of that, the food and the bad, in 2016.

I’m not sad that Spencer was punched for being a Nazi. I enjoyed that video over and over. But, until we declare an actual war, violence is only rewarded for those that want to maintain white men in charge. For the rest of us, we have to show in our numbers and in our persistence that the will of the people is progress toward equality for everyone.

There was an attack on a speaker at Ohio State University a couple years back. The guy speaking was on the steps of the Ohio State Student Union building. A young man with a U.S. Flag ran down the steps from the second floor and threw himself and the flag at the speaker and knocked him to the bottom of the stairs violently.

After some study it was determined he was on the spectrum and was revved up by others around and lashed out not thinking of what he was doing being caught in the moment and wanting to please his group.

The guy that was attacked did not press charges once he understood the issues. He forgave the young conservative. He was a Muslim, forgiveness part of his religion too.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. The events of the past 48 hours have been horrific and clarifying. We know Trump is an evil bigot, and his admin and his statements are proof that the white supremacists and Nazis have support in the highest office in the nation.

Trump refused to condemn the terrorist attack against protesters who were condemning white supremacists and Nazis marching in VA. It doesn’t take 140 characters to say “I condemn the violence by white supremacists and Nazis”. Rather Trump went both sides to equate protests by white supremacists and Nazis with the protesters getting killed and attacked by the white supremacists and Nazis.

Don’t think for a moment that this wont embolden the white supremacists and Nazis throughout the country. They’ve seen Trump run with their anti-immigrant platform and they have a friend in Trump. Just because Ivanka posted some mealy-mouthed tweet this morning doesn’t diminish the fact that Daddy didn’t and wont do the same.

Heck, we all know that Trump would have called this an act of terrorism the moment he thought that the driver involved was identified as a Muslim. He would have called for a further travel ban, more surveillance of mosques, and curbing civil rights of Muslims. What we do know is that Trump has shifted DOJ/LEO priorities away from right wing domestic terror groups to focus on radical Islamic terrorists, even though the majority of terrorism in this country has been the right wing variety.

The common themes among terrorists in the US these days has been the fact that white power and supposed feelings of lost power are themes found in the writings of those carrying out these attacks.

And that leads us back to those confederate statues. Most were erected in the Jim Crow/Segregation era to remind blacks of who was in charge and what they’d like to see reemerge. The claims of southern heritage are interlaced with the belief that slavery was taken from them and that is a right that they’ve been denied.

The GOP has exploited this for decades, and the same people who claim Democrats fought to maintain slavery ignore that the parties flipped after passage of the Civil Rights Act once and for all because the GOP is currently the party of bigotry and white power. While the GOP was once the party of Lincoln, it is now the Party of Trump.

The GOP owns all this and so much more for their craven silence to oppose Trump from the get-go when he was quoting white supremacists affirmatively all through the campaign and when he brought bigots into his campaign like Gorka, Bannon, and Miller.

He still hasn’t called the Minnesota mosque bombing terrorism. That would be admitting that terrorism isn’t solely the purview of radical Islamic terrorists.

Trump has devoted his rhetoric to casting the radical Islamic terrorist and Muslims generally as the enemy. The reality that right wingers and white supremacists are terrorists diminishes his messaging and would attack Trump’s own core supporters.

I addressed this business of eternal fruitcake last October on this string about the World ‘s Worst Halloween Candy.
I

It is sold for the same reason holiday fruitcake is still marketed throughout the civilized world, and even in Lubbock: Nobody likes it but it has acquired the sacrosanct status of “tradition.”

Incidentally, no new fruitcakes have been manufactured since 1977. They are like pre-‘86 licensed machine guns in that respect. The existing supply is simply passed around, usually among family groups. Each recipient hides the unwelcome morsel until the next round of holidays, then unloads it on someone else. Since no attempt is made to actually eat the things, noone is the wiser. Besides, a 40 year old fruitcake in its canister is probably as edible as it ever was.
True.

How about we stop tolerating Nazi marches which devolve into violent attacks and murder? How about starting out with the premise that we don’t allow hate groups to parade around?

We can’t do that. What we can do is meet them with overwhelming numbers. I remember back in the day (MTV was in its infancy) when the Klan came to Austin to protest at the state capitol, you’d have six Klansmen in robes, 600 or more cops on hand and 6,000 howling students and Austinites. Yeah, everything was peaceful. But this was only achieved after a riot between the Klan and the John Brown Anti-Klan Committee which was lightly policed and resulted in injuries.

re: #470 mmmirele

Quite so. No shortcuts, like abrogating the 1st A. Which is what it would take to ban a hate group from gathering, speaking etc. We do not regulate beliefs here. We regulate public speech and gatherings by behavior. What they do. we can’t go by what cause it is or what the popular momentary culture thinks of this group or that.

Lets talk plainly. If you bring shields, body armor and (maybe) barely legal weapons or guns to a protest expect to be treated as one seeking violence by diligent police. Or national guard. Or me if I’m some guy trying to be a lawful protester. I’ll not take a beating without resistance. The police can and must keep these protest/counter-protest groups separated. Where they don’t try they are complicit. Of course sometimes surprise is a factor, and crowds sometimes outmaneuver police.

But we do have to hit the streets to show our numbers. With some smarts and care.

1. It’s the media.
2. The crash happened during the protests.
3. Media are mostly stupid.

Linking the crash and the riot as news events is the simplistic thing to do, see point 3 above: Whether or not there is any actual link, outside of sheer unfortunate timing won’t be found out until a thorough investigation is complete.

BTW, I’m thinking “not”: helicopters are complex and often-unreliable machines, barring some unambiguous evidence (like bullet holes in the windshield), I’m guessing “mechanical failure” as the cause.

What part of sensationalism do you not understand?

We got papers to sell, sites to click on and gasp.

Information we will get wrong…

…and those memories last.

In another year someone “protesting” a peaceful gathering did something to that helicopter and heros died. A man was scared and panicked, driving his car into a woman to escape the real protesters. All to allow freedom of speech for the unfortunate and misunderstood nazi.

This particular bit of sophistry is at the heart of all the bigotry and hatred that (supposedly) gives these aholes the ability to distance themselves from what they are actually saying.

And, really, no. This does not give you plausible deniability in your desire to create a whites only enclave.

Jelani Cobb:

“The sickening images that emerged from Charlottesville herald that some moment has arrived. It is a moment of indeterminate morality, one in which the centrifugal forces of contempt, resentment, and racial superiority are pitted against the ideal of common humanity and the possibility of a civic society. We have entered a new phase of the Trump era. The breach that Trump has courted since he first emerged in public life has become apparent; it is more deadly and its architects more emboldened. What happened in Virginia was not the culminating battle of this conflict. It’s likely a tragic preface to more of the same.”

So glad I listened to Trump’s speech from earlier in the day. Something struck me about Trump’s speech yesterday… he was basically reading the entire thing. And it was obvious he hadn’t read it or practiced beforehand. You almost never see his eyes, just his eyelids because he’s looking down for 10-15 seconds, looks up for 2-3 seconds and then looks back down. Not sure what exactly it means, other than the fact that he’s an idiot who can’t retain more than 10 key words, but it was really strange to me.

Not strange to me: it’s Trump’s usual way of “delivering” remarks he

1. Hasn’t been extensively familiarized with beforehand
2. Contains info outside of his usual boilerplate sloganeering
3. Doesn’t allow for either self-promoting braggadocio or insults towards opponents
4. Contains stuff he doesn’t really agree with

My own analysis is that the man is severely dyslexic, probably has been for most of his life, and is getting worse with age. In his previous (business) career he could get away with minimal literacy - after all, his “wealth” (and its subsequent dissolution) was built on the manipulation of numbers and concepts: I think that even today, Donald could cobble up a lucrative real-estate deal, calculate all the figures to maximize profits down to the last dollar, and remember to insert the typical/usual number of legal outs and weasel-holes to minimize his liability/exposure. But without a staff to do the paperwork for him, he’s lost: and probably couldn’t adequately read through his own deal.
Just another “not useful in a President of the United States” Trump trait: and sadly, it’s not the only, or worst one….

Uh oh, Lindsey is once again “concerned” and calling for A REPORT:

Graham added that he would support the creation of a federal task force to investigate the “size and scope” of racist hate groups and to “report back to Congress to see if we need to do more in terms of suppressing them.”

huffingtonpost.com

Ummm, Lindsey, I can save you time, effort and money, and direct you to:

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) attributed some of the growth to President Trump, who it described Wednesday in its quarterly Intelligence Report as having “electrified the radical right,” and whose campaign rallies, the report’s author claims, were “filled with just as much anti-establishment vitriol as any extremist rally.”

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on the report and its conclusions. Many of the groups the SPLC identified as part of the rise in extremist activity reject the label of “hate group…”

More prominent now are the groups born as think tanks and nonprofits, and the correlated emergence of the “alternative right,” which the SPLC argues is a “rebranding of white supremacy for public relations purposes.”

Sorry. New statement cannot cover what was first said. It is clear he knows no better because that is exactly what he wanted to say.

Besides, it would just be lipstick on President Pig. No one that has a brain would take it serious and all would know he was driven to do it to make him look better.

Trump came out yesterday and did exactly what he and every conservative criticized Obama for doing for years: Refusal to confront the source of the violence and false equivalence to claim that both sides had been at fault. But more direly, he would not label what happened yesterday correctly: Terrorism. If the driver had been brown, he would not have hesitated to dub him a terrorist and insinuate that he was a member of ISIS or another terrorist organization. After three cases of domestic terrorism this year involving white guys, all three of which have gone unremarked by our president, the message is clear: White people can’t be terrorists.

Really, what he’s pissed about is not that he’s being portrayed as an angry racist. He’s pissed because this shit is gonna follow him for the foreseeable future. If he has a job, he’s now a liability. If he doesn’t, potential employers are gonna think twice about touching him. Like the high school football star who whines that the rape charge will “end his life,” this dipshit’s biggest worry is the consequences of his actions.

Possibly he was entering/having/leaving another dementia episode at the time of the conference so his handlers decided he had to read it. That would limit his extemporaneous faux pas.

That is most probable. When he goes off on his own, the real Donald J. Trump comes out. If you think what he said in a prepared statement was bad, just think how it might have gone had he tried to speak on his own.

It would have been Obama’s mess he left, and you all should be glad Hillary wasn’t elected because there would be real blood in the streets. Believe me. Some of my backers get a little wound up and, hey, people get hurt. This country was built by blood and toil. But under Clinton it would be worse, so we can all get through this, there may be some bumps. But you’ll thank me as we Make America Great Again. Okay.

I firmly believe that every American opposed to these swine should visit their local gunshop and buy whatever handgun or rifle is within their means. Perhaps that is only a Hi-Point 9mm pistol but it will still defend that person and their loved ones from a Nazi expecting “liberals” & minorities to be unarmed and helpless. Revolvers, lever action rifles and pump action shotguns are all good because they’re easy to use and are jury friendly. They’re the guns cowboys and pre-militarized cops (Adam-12 anyone?) used.

Don’t spend too much on a defense weapon - the cops will confiscate it if you need to use it even if you are in the right.

It also proved what I always suspected about Trump — that he is incapable of staging his own Reichstag Fire as a power grab.

To do so requires uniting more than his base of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and deranged folk. He flunked what would have been a passable test for any other Republican… even the batshit crazies like Rudy.

What happened last night was THE defining moment of Trump’s occupation of the White House. His disconnect from reality, regardless of who wrote that drivel, is Trump at his core… a heartless orge who only cares about wealth and power, regardless of the illegal ways he fraudulently seized power.

But last night also calcified the (very correct) analysis that Trump is a supporter of white supremacists and Nazism, if not one himself. This is something that every elected Republican knows will be hung on their necks like a millstone until next November, and that was already being shown on Twitter last night.

Watch as an already dysfunctional political party cracks up under the pressure.

They honestly think that the way to turn things around after this weekend is to stage a BBQ and have skinheads bring their families. That it will help them moderate their image and make the Antifa look bad if they appear to protest.

You insisted that what you were staging this weekend would be a peaceful rally, yet you fuckers showed up with weapons and armor. You did more in the past three days to show just how deep the racial divide is in this country, where a white guy can waltz around with an AR-15 and not get rousted by the cops, than you could have ever hoped for. And in the process, you lent more weight to the argument for ripping down these symbols of a failed state than you the opposition could have possibly dreamed.

A BBQ ain’t gonna fix what you fuckers did.

Here’s a clue for the dumbfucks - if you are mounting a peaceful protest, you carry candles. If you carry torches, or guns, or shields, or Nazi flags, it’s a threat of violence.

A THREAT OF VIOLENCE IS INHERENTLY NOT A PEACEFUL PROTEST.
