Hell, he did it in the speech today when he mentioned how we have to “cherish our history.” In this context the only people who want to cherish the history of insurrection and treason fueled by racism and the “scared right” to own another human being as chattel are fucking racists. It’s also a line that white supremacists use on the regular

I learned that in high school. I was lucky, my father was my history teacher for basic and advanced placement history courses. He always makes sure to let kids know that Arlington National Cemetery used to be R. E. Lee’s plantation.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Cade Varnell, who identified himself as Jerry’s brother, accused the agency of pushing him into the plot, The Oklahoman reported.

IIRC, the Arlington estate actually wasn’t “Lee’s”, but his wife’s- who was some sort of relative of Martha Washington, whose family had originally built it. Lee lucked out there- he was Virginia aristocracy, but poor: I think his father blew the family fortune on something or other, and had to flee to the West Indies. But yeah: Arlington is a better place in its current usage….

To be honest, blame-shifting or no, I hope the FBI crafted their sting for Jerry Varnell carefully enough to forestall an “entrapment” defense. Absent a quick “guilty” plea, I’m sure that what his lawyers are going to go with….

Now, I’ll admit I find it troubling how often it appears that LEO Agents seem to be goading these idiots along, and providing them the means to their conspiracy.
But, in this case “Jerry” picked the target,
“Jerry” had to be talked out of making his own explosives (so he wouldn’t accidentally blow himself or others up and call attention to their “mission”),
“Jerry” drove the “stolen” van full of “explosives” to his target,
“Jerry” picked up the cell phone and dialed the number to “detonate” the “bomb” TWICE

Already raised as a racist sociopath, fortune/power/privilege empowered by racism his whole life, severe narcissistic injury at Obama’s hands at the WHCD roast (remember Seth trolled him too), Kremlin op feeding this big time by leveraging decades old ties (chiefly financial) and probably kompromat.
And I’d bet when Obama had the misfortune of having to host him in service of the peaceful transfer of the Presidency that his presence and solemn warnings about what the bastard was about to inherit pissed him off too.

The Confederacy’s legacy is permanently fucked by the Lost Cause mythos itself.

If you create a a story of venal Northern perfidy versus Southern gallantry and love of independence to explain the Civil War—and that antebellum race relations were just fine—it doesn’t explain the post-War legislative acts that created Jim Crow, the extralegal power accumulated by the KKK, or the stochastic violence. Or Rosewood. Or Tulsa. Or all the black and white folks saying “no this is not safe or okay” that were ignored.

Second verse the same: segregation sixty years later when Northerners were purportedly to blame for civil rights unrest. Yankee agitators don’t explain Bull Connor. Or George Wallace. Or sundown towns. Or the KKK…still. Ok, the hooded dudes are terrorists. James Earl Ray is a lone wolf. But the shit that got voted for: every law, every civil-liberty-ignoring-law the Supreme Court had to overrule.

Third verse the same: Hakenkreuses being waved this time. Tiki torches—“Triumph of the Will” on a Troma film budget. The story is making less sense than ever, because it’s skin is now the rituals and phrases of a completely different time and place. It’s bigger and the cruelty it now wants to justify is bigger, too.

If it had died completely in Reconstruction, the Confederacy wouldn’t have been heroic, but it would have become comprehensible, a thing of a time and place with its specific shape and cruelty. But instead the Confederates were fed to The Story. In history they would be flawed, even wicked, men understandable as creatures of context. But The Story have made them the excuse for generation after generation of the same cruelty and whim, the same denial…

…and now that the Nazi ethos is an integrated fucking part of The Story, and the spectrum of bad shit excusable by The Story is expanding again, some folks are fucking done with it.

Hence the wave of monuments announced to be removed, and the ones get dropped by spontaneous action.

This is pure own goal. Self-beshitting. Petard-down-pants stupidity.

The Lost Cause brand persisted because it had a thin film of American distinctiveness to it…our history, our grief, our politics, our prejudices. But now it’s just another regional franchise of the Grand Unified Conspiracy Horseshit, selling the ubiquitous blend of Jews, toxic homoeroticism, and rationalization of mediocrity.

Intel CEO Krzanich quits Trump’s Manufacturing Council over response to Charlottesville rallies
CEOs of Merck and Under Armour also dump, and dump on, Tweeter-in-chief
By Richard Chirgwin

Three big-name CEOs have put some space between themselves and the US President: today they resigned from the American Manufacturing Council, President Donald Trump’s panel of advisors formed to create more manufacturing jobs in the United States by bringing together titans of industry to share their experience.

On Monday night, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich quit in the aftermath of deadly white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the weekend, penning the following 255 withering words:

I resigned to call attention to the serious harm our divided political climate is causing to critical issues, including the serious need to address the decline of American manufacturing. Politics and political agendas have sidelined the important mission of rebuilding America’s manufacturing base.

I have already made clear my abhorrence at the recent hate-spawned violence in Charlottesville, and earlier today I called on all leaders to condemn the white supremacists and their ilk who marched and committed violence. I resigned because I want to make progress, while many in Washington seem more concerned with attacking anyone who disagrees with them.

Yet, tRump singled out the Merck CEO. Why?

The soft ending to Reconstruction came about for the same reason we have Trump in the White House: Close, contentious election that led to a compromise that seated a president but ripped the guts out of any hopes that the South would be forced to deal with the results of their actions.

This is interesting.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch recently urged President Donald Trump to sack his far-right chief strategist Steve Bannon, The New York Times reported late Monday.

Murdoch made his plea during a White House dinner before Trump left for vacation in New Jersey on 4 August, the Times said.

The timing means it preceded the violence that broke out over the weekend at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, leaving one dead and 19 wounded.

The dinner was also attended by Jared Kushner, one of Trump’s closest advisers and the husband of his daughter Ivanka, and Trump’s new chief of staff John Kelly, the paper said, quoting a person familiar with the conversation.

Trump did not strongly counter Murdoch’s advice and expressed frustration with Bannon, the paper said.

Murdoch turning against Trump would be bad news for him - FNC made his presidency a reality. And they can break his presidency just as easily.

103
Dr Lizardo  Aug 15, 2017 • 1:36:40am

A noteworthy event from Durham, NC:

Protesters in North Carolina toppled a nearly century-old statue of a Confederate soldier Monday at a rally against racism.

Activists in Durham brought a ladder up to the statue and used a rope to pull down the Confederate Soldiers Monument that was dedicated in 1924. A diverse crowd of dozens cheered as the statue of a soldier holding a rifle fell to the ground in front of an old courthouse building that now houses local government offices.

Seconds after the monument fell, protesters began kicking the crumpled bronze monument.

“I was a little bit shocked people could come here and come together like that,” said Isaiah Wallace, who is black.

Wallace said he watched as others toppled the statue. He hopes other Confederate symbols elsewhere will follow.

“I feel like this is going to send shockwaves through the country and hopefully they can bring down other racist symbols,” he said.

IIRC, they pretty much despised Ailes and were glad to see him gone. Around the time that brouhaha was going down, I popped over to FR and while some were convinced it was all a conspiracy by the younger Murdochs to get rid of Ailes, quite a few others reckoned it was simply the pretext needed to make Ailes go away once and for all.

Personally, that latter group of Freepers may not have been too far off in their assessment - it was the perfect opportunity for the younger Murdochs to send Ailes, a man they loathed, out to pasture.

Fucker Carlson’s show is now the only one on FNC primetime that actually still leads in overall viewers and the key 25-54 demo, and even those numbers are down from the O’Reilly audience he inherited. Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

It’s a day ending Y, which means Trump’s busy tweeting white supremacists and bigots and pushing conspiracy theories. I think he hit that trifecta by 9am today.

Bret Stephens at the NYT decides to throw in some both siderism, claiming liberals should be reminded that they need to call things out as they are too.

Right… The President refuses to call out domestic terrorism because it wasn’t the right sort of person behind the wheel. He refuses to call out right wing domestic terrorism because that’s his core support. He refuses to address right wing extremism despite it being the source of more violence in the US than radical Islamic terrorism.

All Trump has done is pander and promote white supremacist policies/beliefs. He was signaling all this during the campaign. He still does. No amount of apologies can make up for his devotion to the white supremacist/Nazi causes he continues espousing.

More than that, the GOP has adopted many of these same policies - limiting immigration, attacking minority civil/voting rights, and attacking victims of racial discrimination and those fighting for justice and calling those people terrorists (BLM).

This is systemic and endemic to the GOP. They own all this, and Stephens can take his both siderism and shove it up his back side from whence it came.

James Woods is a fucking moron (who blocked me when I dropped a truth bomb on his sorry ass).

He thinks there’s some moral equivalence between statues that honor Confederate generals and leaders and those that honor US Servicemembers who fought in the name of the United States of America.

The Confederates were a bunch of insurrectionists and secessionists whose entire purpose was to preserve the institution of slavery. Period.

And the Confederates lost.

Many of these statues were erected decades later during the era of Jim Crow and segregation so as to remind minorities of their rightful place and where the white bigots wanted to see them returned to.

There’s no reason to honor people who fought against the United States of America. There’s no reason to fly the flag of the Confederacy unless you purport to support those aims and goals.

There’s no statue for second place. It’s rather funny that some of the same people who claim that we give out participation medals for just showing up are demanding we protect statues that essentially do the same - these people participated in insurrection against the US and lost. They weren’t honorable and they weren’t fighting a just cause. They were fighting to keep black people as property.

Fuck James Woods and all those who think there’s some reason to honor these people with statues all across the country.

Reconstruction was far too lenient to the former CSA leaders and it’s why we have this mess today. I’m not saying I would have hanged Lee but I am saying he got off easy.

Don’t understand how any of the Confederates got away without being hanged as traitors. Had they been treated as the traitors they were, perhaps there wouldn’t have been over 100 years of anti-Black racism enshrined in the South which included lynching and Jim Crow.

The man behind the “Yes, You’re Racist” account that helped unemploy two of the white supremacists:

The Raleigh man behind the viral Twitter account @YesYoureRacist said on Monday that since publishing photos of torch-carrying white supremacist protesters Saturday in Charlottesville, he has received remarkable support - but also death threats.

Logan Smith, who works as the communications director for Progress NC Action, says the account had about 65,000 followers Saturday morning. On Monday afternoon, it had topped 307,000 and was climbing.

“I have been receiving death threats for the past 20 hours or so,” Smith, 30, said in a phone interview. “They have been threatening my family, too. The overall response of course has been 99 percent positive, but there’s always that extremely small but extremely loud and extremely angry minority that bites back.”

Not sure how to take this Dan Amira tweet with the Big Boy character image.

I see on his Twitter page he lists himself as a write for The Daily Show. That already got me to wondering.

Is he trying to be funny and say the alt-right White Nationalists would get upset if they started to knock down Big Boy signs as it is a “famous White icon” and it would piss them off as they lose another link to their oh so special whiteness?

I’m thinking he just has a droll sense of humor and people are taking it wrong, which does happen when everyone is on edge and not seeing clearly.

Tough time to be a humorist. Not a lot is funny these days.

Thank you, Boston.

Boston’s mayor and Massachusetts’ governor held a press conference Monday to discuss the planned rally, saying they would do everything they could to keep the rally from happening and that Boston rejects racism, white supremacy and hatred, Mass Live reported.

“Boston does not welcome you here, Boston does not want you here, Boston rejects your message,” Mayor Marty Walsh said. “We’ll do anything in our power to keep hate out of our city.”

Walsh said the city is working to figure out who the organizers are and he said he planned to ask the group to postpone the rally. If they did arrive, he said the city would allow them to advocate for free speech, but not violence, threatening behavior or vandalism.

The mayor’s move comes in response to a request from several Boston civil rights groups, who asked Walsh for a meeting to discuss how the city plans to keep citizens safe during the Free Speech rally on Saturday. The gathering is scheduled to be held exactly one week after a self-proclaimed white supremacist allegedly drove his car into a group of counter-protesters at a white nationalists rally in Charlottesville, killing one person.

I fucking hate that we need to find the private funding for these services, just so conservatives can turn around and say that they should be funded totally by private donations; that government has no place in providing funding for a program that helps keep people from joining domestic terrorist groups. ” COLUMBIA, SC - A former South Carolina state trooper who shot an unarmed motorist in 2014 was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Tuesday, but is expected to serve around three years behind the fence.

Sean Groubert pleaded guilty in March 2016 to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. More than a year later, Circuit Judge Casey Manning handed him a 12-year sentence, suspended to five years with three years probation.

Because Groubert has spent the last 17 months in jail, that time will be applied to the five years he’s required to serve in prison. Once Groubert serves the five years, he will remain on probation for three years. Should he violate the terms of his probation, he would have to serve the remaining time of the 12 years, Manning said. …”

I was listening to NPR on way to work and they were talking to people from Charlottesville. They talked to this guy who said he was in the “middle” on the issue. How the fuck are you in the middle? “I don’t like either side because they make me think thoughts.” They don’t want to have to choose. “Why do all these blacks and Mexicans and women want equality? Can’t we just go back to the way things were?” So, yes, they’re choosing a side.

The bad news: the rehab person said there is no freaking way I can go up and downstairs on this cast so she recommended bringing all my stuff downstairs and sleep in the living room. That sucks so hard. No weight can be put on the cast. The only way to get up stairs is jump using my good foot, and I can’t clear that high. Another way is two people carry me up and down. Or stay in a rehab until the cast comes off (nope nope nope nope)

I doubt Rush will ever out-crazy Alex Jones. The only serious competition Jones has in that department is Jeff Rense.

They could say ‘allegedly murdered’ because the case hasn’t been made in court yet. But you’re right. ‘Killed’ is not ‘alleged’. It happened.

CNN rejects Trump 2020 campaign ad that says Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon are ‘enemies’
rawstory.com

CNN has reportedly refused to air an advertisement created by Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign for president.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Trump campaign issued a statement this week accusing CNN of “censorship.”

“After the campaign’s media team attempted a standard paid media placement for the ad, CNN blocked the ad buy, censoring the message to the American people that ‘President Trump’s plan is working,’” the statement said.

Trump Acts Like He’s President of the Red States

“Donald Trump often behaves as if he’s first and foremost the president of the states and the people who voted for him. That’s at odds with the American tradition, and it’s problematic as a governing philosophy — especially in a moment of crisis. Trump’s initially tone-deaf response to Charlottesville underscores why.”

Good to hear that all went well. It was because of serious health problems ten years ago, that I sold my split level house and moved into a ranch. I realized that one always needs a main floor bedroom and bath!

I moved my husband into my parents’ home when it became clear his Parkinson’s was advancing quickly. My parents had both died, but it was still a BFD to get it cleared out and him moved and settled in, but it was without doubt one of the best decisions I have made. I think my office was the biggest issue! Total of 34 FULL file drawers, plus a garage full of paper. And no, most of it can’t be just recycled. Sigh.

Because every time the show up there is violence!

But wait, they only show up where there are Nazis.

Hate to break it to you, Farmer John, but both groups count white people among their members. You ain’t gonna find a black guy at a Klan rally except the one they’re currently lynching. And the Nazis hate white people aplenty, just so long they’re not the “right” kind of white person.

The last couple of days, I’ve been thinking about what truly constitutes incitement and fighting words. This cartoon got me thinking about it in a slightly different way.

In tort law, there is something called negligence per se, which basically says that action that violates a law or regulation is negligence as a matter of law. This has led me to ponder the idea of incitement per se. I’m not entirely sure how I would define it, but I think it could include any speech that explicitly (or implicitly) calls for ethnic cleansing, genocide, or the use of violence to deny fundamental rights to others would constitute incitement per se. I’m going to have to think about this for a bit.

Ironically, the Australian muscle car forums I used to go on (such as ones for LS1 owners in Australia and the Ford Falcon forums) were the complete opposite of the American ones when it came to politics. I found more Aussie muscle car owners supporting Obama than American ones.

I found that the case with 996 and up owners (you know, the water cooled bunch).

The air-cooled crowd, even the 993 owners, were a cool bunch that I could relate to on a personal level. I remember back in 2005 I spoke with a 993 Turbo owner at a fuel station near Denton TX after I gave him props for his beautiful ride (I’ve always fancied 993’s) and he was caught surprised. We got talking and he gave me a spin in the car and I was so ecstatic as a 20 year old guy back then. I lost touch with him sadly (though he told me he was on 6speedonline too) but that was a memorable moment with meeting an actual Porsche enthusiast and not a poseur who buys it for the badge.

What a time to be alive, man… National Review calls for removal of Confederate Monuments

The conservative National Review is calling for the removal of Confederate monuments from public spaces, saying they should be reserved for museums and other locations.

“The monuments should go. Some of them simply should be trashed; others transmitted to museums, battlefields and cemeteries. The heroism and losses of Confederate soldiers should be commemorated, but not in everyday public spaces where the monuments are flashpoints in poisonous racial contention, with white nationalists often mustering in their defense,” editor Rich Lowry wrote in a piece published Tuesday.

He argued the recent violence that broke out at a white supremacist rally that started as a protest of the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from a Charlottesville, Virginia park, should be an “inflection point in the broader debate” over whether the monuments of Confederate soldiers serve a purpose in the public sphere.

“For supporters of the Confederate monuments, removing them from parks and avenues will be a blow against their heritage and historical memory. But the statues have often been part of an effort to whitewash the Confederacy,” Lowry said. “And it’s one thing for a statue to be merely a resting place for pigeons; it’s another for it to be a fighting cause for neo-Nazis.”

re: #524 ericblair

The Nazis really wedge-issued the Republicans over this. They’ve spent so much time smelling their own farts they don’t understand at all how this plays with the normal population, and I include Shithead in this list.

It sure blew up a lot worse (or better) than I expected it to.

The issue has taken on a life of its own now, and people who weren’t paying attention to what Trump’s been doing on Saturday morning are now starting to say ‘Hey, I did not sign up for this.’

And Trump, bless his shriveled, black, empty heart, can be depended upon for one thing these days - as bad as any situation is, his compulsion to always be the biggest asshole in the room will lead him to fuck up the situation even worse.

Mid-terms are getting closer every day. Trump is still being an asshole, and no one in the GOP (or even his inner circle) is capable of stopping him..

GOP politicians are going to get to the point where they’ll have to cut their losses or lose their jobs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some congressional Republicans starting to get on board with impeachment by the end of the year.

.
.

The sun rises in the east. To pretend the sun can rise in the west is a fiction, to claim that it does so as fact (or “alternative fact”) is a lie.

A lie is a non-fact deliberately told as fact. Lies are told in order to reassure oneself, or to fool, or scare, or manipulate others. Santa Claus is a fiction. He’s harmless. Lies are seldom completely harmless, and often very dangerous. In most times, most places, by most people, liars are considered contemptible.

Not sure how to answer: I was like that before I got my Porsche…. ;)

Well then!

The most frustrating thing with them as far as selling parts for their Porsches was they wanted only Genuine OE Porsche parts made in Germany.

Many Porsche parts are available as OEM parts from the likes of Bosch, Sachs, Luk and the like. Nope not good enough!

I guess saving a few dollars for the same gol’ damned part is a sin. Okay pay more for it fool.

The other issue. Many actual Porsche parts are not made in freaking Germany. They can come from Italy, Slovakia, Poland and other countries. They come in boxes marked Genuine Porsche Part. If the box doesn’t say Germany…no can use.

Okay fool, don’t use the correct part. Good luck finding it elsewhere. You never seem to hear back from them. I guess they don’t see the boxes when they get services at the Porsche dealer.

All of the other German car parts we sold…no problem. VW. Audi. BMW. Merc…

That’s because, at his very core, he is so afraid and insecure, and always has been, that his only motivation is approval. He is so desperate for approval and praise that it is the only thing he sees. In his world, in his eyes, people have no other qualities other than ‘loves Trump’ or ‘hates Trump’. No other beliefs, thoughts, or actions. And the only response he knows is to toady or pander to the first and attack the second.

I didn’t really even think people like this could exist. A small child also craves approval, but even a small child is discerning enough to know that a creepy stranger who leers at you is not an approval you want, while the approval of someone you care about is. Trump has no such capacity for discernment.

I don’t really think he’s a Nazi, or feels that way especially strongly. I’m sure he’s racist and bigoted, but I don’t think he has ever thought about a topic long enough to develop a deeply held belief, especially not something as complex as race relations. All he knows is that those people love him, so he wants to pander to them.

I avoid buying bikes out of a person’s trunk. Could be stolen. Especially when the price is so low, they obviously don’t know what they have and what it’s worth. But I make exceptions. When it’s a little old man who has given up riding and is trying to make room in his garage… well, I’m a sucker for a good story. So I have this bike I bought last month, sitting there with a flat tire, haven’t payed it any attention, and this guy comes in and tells me a friend of his saw his old bike in here—and there it is! I could swear it’s the same guy I bought it from. I had written a note when I bought it, the price, the date, the guy’s name. So I ask today’s guy his name. It is the same! Either his memory is going, or mine, or both. But I wrote it down!. That’s a pretty clever thief who uses his victim’s name, and looks just like him. The guy is going to come back tomorrow and give me what I gave him for it. Then everybody will be happy and confused.

Which, one supposes, has recovered from its collision with the “Trump Train”??

Yeah, this IS bad for the Asshole-in-Chief, and trying the usual spin to either deflect/”explain”/”clarify is probably not going to work this time.
My thoughts today are that the Impeachment Pool has just made its final shift from “if” to “when”, and that the latter factor is going to depend on what exact type of shit Robert Mueller is going to be able to dredge up from the cesspool that is Donald Trump’s business and political dealings. Of course, it is still going to hinge (100%) on the will of Congress: but I’m sure that a non-trivial number of GOP officials are guzzling either booze or Maalox (probably both) over the thought of next year’s campaign ads featuring the tiki-torch Stormtroopers chanting “Jews will not replace us” with a voice-over of Trump making excuses for them, and fade-outs featuring swastika flags….

Buchanan came into office when the Civil War was already nearly inevitable and did absolutely nothing to stop it. What he did try (e.g., hyping the Dred Scott decision) was laughably incompetent. This has been enough to put him at #1 on most peoples’ worst US presidents list.

tr*mp was elected as a notorious bigot, idiot, narcissist and fool, true representative of the Pig People. He was the worst US president ever as of Jan 20, 2017, and everything since then has just been shock and awe to dissuade any future contender from competing for this title.

I cannot fucking believe I am writing those words.

721
Dr Lizardo  Aug 15, 2017 • 2:17:44pm

Well, up early for work tomorrow. So, gotta say good night Lizards.

As to Trump and his white supremacist goonsquad, well, I’ll say this. He just empowered them like no POTUS in my lifetime of 48 years ever has. They’ve heard this presser, and they’re emboldened the likes of which the USA hasn’t seen since probably the 1920’s, the days of the KKK revival.

And I suppose, in a way, I can’t blame them for feeling that way. After all, they know - in no uncertain terms - that they have one of their one sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office.

I would hope that right about now, the GOP leadership is huddled together, figuring out what the fuck to do about this monster they’ve created - and now lost control of. They chose to ride the tiger and there consequences for such decisions. I’d like to hope that, but of course, the GOP being what they are, and having long ago made a Faustian bargain with their Southern Strategy, to which they are now inextricably entangled, I expect little beyond a few words of opprobrium.

Heaven help us.

And with that, good night and good luck.

Minor historical quibble: James Buchanan was put forward for the Presidency in 1856 mainly for his perceived ideological biases (he was a thorough “doughface” - a pro-slavery Northerner guaranteed to do little/nothing about slavery, and/or acquiesce to its expansion) - but “Old Buck” at least, was a career public servant with a lengthy and respectable resum´e - something notably lacking in the current incumbent.
But yeah, Buchanan’s Admin was “laughably incompetent”, tho to me the worst of his gaffes wasn’t Dred Scott, but trying to badger Congress into accepting the Lecompton Constitution* as the basis for admitting Kansas to the Union.

* a pro-slavery document cooked up by a rump “convention” of violent racist ruffians, who were considered “fringe” even by contemporary standards
