To that person: were the statues of traitors that enslaved people and tried to break up the country they were part of? I’d not, then the analogy doesn’t work.

Actually, Mrs. Fish raised a legit concern about that. Her main question was, how certain are we that the whole protest crowd was all Nazis? She was wondering if anyone came to the protest legitimately protesting the removal of a historical landmark, because to be fair, it is kinda sad to be wiping out historical markers, even ones dedicated to traitors and slaveowners. I think she took the point about the statues glorifying those Confederate “heroes” needing to go, though.

This is how I see the situation. Women’s rights are seriously in trouble in this country —but women wear bags, can’t drive and are stoned in a part of the world which we have been working with for decades (causing much of the problems) and there is significant change.

It’s not a time to ignore the domestic situation.

Yeah, well good luck with that: most real-world (i.e. NOT Fox-Business) analyses project that the economy is likely to start contracting some time in next 6-9 months: iow, just in time for the 2018 elections. And by then, blaming “Obama and Dem policies” for any downturns will have even LESS weight than the zero they have now.

re: #12 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Thing is, what’s the math on honoring your ancestors if you’re doing it you’re associating that legacy with those words, those rituals that are white supremacist?

Heritage is more what you do day in day out than what you declare. Pride in the past doesn’t excuse bad behavior in the present.

If I really believed that my ancestors fought the good fight, I’d be incredibly angry, because they’re celebrating the exact shit the Lost Cause claims wasn’t important.

(And I say that as someone who was steeped in the Lost Cause the minute I arrived back in the US, and had to get knowledge to fully understand the hollowness of the myth)

But if the abstracted past is prioritized over the current-day, actual implications of dudes screaming about Jews and waving Hakenkreuses…well, the virtues ascribed to the past don’t fucking matter no matter how often they’re cited.

Until, of course, some new “grievance” gets ginned up….

The main grievance these white supremacist douchebags have is a towering resentment that their racism is not validated in all parts of public life. The Fox News and Rush Limbaugh outrages of the day are mostly intended to feed this resentment. The details of these outrages don’t matter and are quickly forgotten. That’s why lies will serve perfectly well if no suitably outrageous truths can be found that week. All that matters is keeping the underlying resentment fed.

So now we have tens of millions of voters in the US that will support US fascism or Nazism based purely on resentment.

If anything, that ratio has moved towards the light in the last 100 years.

That is one troubled man.

I bet he gets with Trump tomorrow and tells him one more final time his behavior is completely out of line and if he doesn’t change he (Kelley) won’t be able to work with the President any longer because the President just cannot seem to find any discipline.

Whereupon it will come down to who blinks first. Kelley resigns or Trump fires him.

Exactly. Congress can impeach and remove a president from office because they are collectively in a pissy mood that day. As I recall, this was noted with approval by at least some of the founders, who thought presidents would be under constant real threat of impeachment to make them behave.

I’m seeing folks on the NeverTrump Right side basically saying that we have no choice but to ride this out, that impeaching Trump for being, as we say in my family “Bad Protoplasm” int he absence of identifiable criminal offense does too much damage to the Constitution, the traditions, the system. We still have to make this all work after Trump leaves.

And I’m sensitive to that position. It’s exactly why we warned the GOP in 1998 about impeaching Clinton, and the whole Obama Presidency about the obstruction, culminating in flatly denying Obama the authority granted by the Constitution to appoint SC Justices, because they hoped to make a better deal.

But they did that anyway, and the oh-so-wise, oh-so-thoughtful folks who now counsel us that we can’t Impeach Trump for being totally unfit for office stood by, watched it happen, maybe even applauded.

It hasn’t even been a year. Barely over half a year, and look where we are. If we don’t remove Trump, because of the damage it will do to the system, will we even have a system left?

Whining about process makes no sense. It is a total no-brainer to remove tr*mp from office via impeachment. The total dysfunction of the Republican party is the only thing stopping this obviously necessary process from happening.

If I were in the (D) Congressional leadership, my offer to Republicans when they finally decide to remove tr*mp from office would be this: House Republicans must provide 218+ votes for the impeachment. Senate Republicans must provide 50+ votes for conviction in the Senate. Only then would I promise the necessary votes in the Senate to convict.

If any SoCal lizards want a cheap, totally reliable 12 gauge shot gun Turners has Remington 870’s on sale for $339.98 ($289.98 after manufacturer’s rebate.)

Normally I don’t try to sell people on firearms possession and only mention this because we live in an Orwellian hellscape.

Frank, my arthritic hands can’t hold or fire a gun but I can still fall back on the pepper spray built into one of my side canes…which I did have to use twice…so far…

But. If people choose to do so, please get the proper training and make sure you have the proper storage facilities for the weapon(s) you choose to purchase, etc.

And if you aren’t going to do that, don’t get a weapon. It’s more likely to harm you if you have no idea what the hell you’re doing.

I don’t personally have any interest in investing the necessary time and energy into that right now, but I feel like the promotion of this should include those caveats no matter what.

I’m a big believer in the shotgun for the vast majority of scenarios the average person might ever expect to encounter. I personally kitted out my Benelli M2 21” field with a +5 mag extension. Loaded w/ 8+1 rounds of #4 Buck that thing shreds so hard it honestly shouldn’t even be legal. It’s way more expensive though, doesn’t like low power tactical loads and will easily come out of battery if you bump the buttpad against the ground so it’s not for most people.

Anybody new to guns should just get an 870, it’s basically bomb proof and easily wins when it comes to bang for the buck.

And that only means violence as a matter of self defense or defense of the vulnerable, to the degree that the neo-Nazis continue to pose a real and immediate threat. But it also means shining the spotlight on them, making their employers and other associates choose between supporting the racist or modern society.

Ran into this while researching our candidate’s link to the Birmingham church bombing. The courage started when they bought a house on the wrong side of the street. It got notable when they didn’t move after the first time it was dynamited. The courage got outrageous when they didn’t move after the second time it was dynamited. Their courage got downright silly when they didn’t move after finding the case of dud dynamite in the yard. They were cautious enough to build a frag wall, however.

Outside of those on Civil War battlefields and perhaps in places of special relevance to these figure’s lives, they aren’t historical markers at all, just monuments to oppression and white supremacy. I might have a tad more sympathy to the whole “historical preservation” aspect if these individuals directed the same fervor towards preventing Civil War battlefields from being replaced with strip malls.

That Big Daddy’s own newspaper is now willing to investigate and bring up Trump’s sordid past may be another sign that the wingnut-milking industry is realizing they have little more to gain from carrying Trump’s baggage.

Oh fuck, is “10 commandments monument” Roy Moore about to win a special election for Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III’s senate seat?

This was just the first primary. He will face #2 Luther Strange in a Sep runoff. Winner wins the December general against the winner of the Dem runoff.

He and Luther Strange are headed to a runoff election.

Our Dem won his election outright, so no Dem runoff. Moore got 53% of the vote here in the county, but will not do that well statewide.

“Republicans vastly outvoted Democrats in Houston County - 8,294 people voted in the Republican primary, while 1,439 voted in the Democratic primary.”

You need to stop. I was having a late night bowl of cereal when I read your tweet and milk came gushing out of my mouth and sprinkled onto the keyboard of my laptop. You’re a mess. A good mess, but a mess.

Agreed, and as a Warriors fan I am also glad that CEO of Under Armour, Steph’s sponsor, stepped down from Trump’s bullshit advisory committee. LeBron and Steph have a lot in common; of course, I like my guy …

re: #202 Belafon

We need to come up with a good name for a replacement of the Republican party. Right now, they don’t want to become Democrats, but if we can give them a name to attach to, maybe people like Mitt Romney, Ana Navarro, and Rick Wilson will jump to a new party.

I’ve always been fond of the Bull Moose party, perhaps they can be revived.
