I was curious about the series “Van Helsing,” so I started watching when Netflix added it.

Don’t bother. The first episode seems promising, the second less promising, then it turns into complete shite after that. Couldn’t finish episode 4.

I give Kelly 36 to 48 hours to resign and be able to salvage his dignity and reputation. He gets more than the 5 minutes I give anyone else because he presumably needs some time for consultation and reflection as to whether he should keep trying to bring that discipline to the White House. He can’t, but that can be harder to see from close up sometimes.

I think he will. We need some patience. Mueller is a patient and thorough man.

In a different sense, I imagine he’s suffering already. This isn’t what he imagined. He has lost control for the most part. He must realize that while he is scaring people he doesn’t like and is cheered by his supporters, that many, many people are making fun of him, and he isn’t feared politically any more.

It takes an incredible amount of hubris and/or stupidity to believe that any president can really control things. The world is a big, complex place with many moving parts that all have their own agendas. But I’m sure Trump believes himself to be a master of the universe type so this must be crushing him.

Probably.

I still want to know why all those companies who outsource production are evil and slinking away after he berated them (you know, after they resigned from his business council) but Ivanka’s foreign made stuff is fine.

In a slightly related item, I see where some Chinese companies are outsourcing their production to N. Korea. Theoretically it is possible Ivanka’s products are partly made there. Which would be interesting. Sadly, I don’t think we’ll ever know.

Saw the discussion about shotguns earlier. It is telling that this category of weapon, realistically ideal for urban combat and self defense, is preferred by liberals, while conservative gunners prefer assault rifles, which are far better suited to their armchair fantasies than to any real situation they are likely to encounter. No semi-automatic rifle has ever been called a “street-sweeper” while it is a trademarked name for shotguns.

Unfortunately, it is almost a 100% certainty that the next terrorist attack against Americans will be by someone associated with the fascists you saw marching in Charlottesville this weekend - the white supremacists are even now using the event as a recruitment tool, and I have seen numerous quotes from their followers that the events from Saturday - both the brownshirt-styled beatings of counterprotestors as well as the vehicular homicide were not the end, but the beginning of their actions - and they are emboldened by Trump’s own words - they know that he will do nothing to oppose them.

re: #11 electrotek

“Anyone else pessimistic that Trump will suffer?”

He probably won’t suffer much in terms of losing the support of his base, but he’s suffering psychologically, I believe. Trump appears to be someone who wants everyone to love him, suck up to him, praise him constantly, and say only nice things about him. For 70 years, he’s been treated that way because he’s used his wealth to ensure that that is exactly what happens to those with whom he has regular contact. When he was campaigning last year and looked out from the podium, he saw adoring faces and persons who seemed willing to sell their last piece of furniture to get close to him. Things are different for him now. He’s having to learn that millions of us will not kiss his *ss, and that has to hurt him psychologically. Old dude’s being pounded on all sides and ridiculed and mocked by our allies. He can pretend that this doesn’t bother him, but if one pays attention to his tweets, one can see his frustration. He’s getting exactly what he deserves. He’s a conman who made millions believe he was better at everything than PBO, and that he was their white savior riding to their rescue on a white unicorn, and they bought it. The *ss had no idea that his laziness, incompetence, intolerance, cowardliness, pettiness, and all of his other nasty qualities would be on full display if he became POTUS. The things that are happening to him are self-inflicted, and I’m enjoying the hell out of seeing him f*ck himself day after day. I’m greatly concerned about our nation and its citizens, but again, I’m enjoying the hell out of witnessing the ethically-challenged, bullying, loud-mouthed, overweight, POS in the WH f*cking up everything he touches. It’s a shame he had to reach the age of 71 before he realized that not everyone loves his abusive, ignorant, immoral, callous *ss. If I could be in the same room with him and had an opportunity to shake his hand, I’d turn away and walk out the nearest door—-such is the intensity of my disdain for him for doing everything he can to destroy a country I love very much.

This is kind of inside baseball, but just to give an idea of the kind of pushback being seen across America. The Mormon church (prominent here in the Intermountain West) put out a statement decrying what happened in Charlottesville on Sunday. It was a decent statement, but obviously put out by a bureaucracy.

There has been a woman named Ayla who Tweets as @apurposefulwife and has had a blog called “Nordic Sunrise.” She’s a flat out white supremacist. Over the past two days, people have been hammering the Mormon church about her, because she’s very open about her beliefs and indeed posted a video of the speech she said she would have given in Charlottesville. (Posting only for the record. NOT RECOMMENDED LISTENING. And for God’s sake, don’t look at the comments.)

My Charlottesville Speech

Now the Mormon church has a history that is not exactly great towards minorities, which makes what happened today remarkable. At about the same time Trump doubled down on the racist, white supremacist, Nazi crazy, the Mormon church made it really, really clear that Ayla wasn’t especially welcome. She figured it out and proceeded to bitch on Twitter.

I have to admit I’m pretty amused to see this white supremacist so very, very discomfited.

What I can never figure out is why people haven’t noticed that if “White Culture” is all that superior, it will win in the marketplace of ideas.
Of course, no one ever defines “White Culture” except in regards to what it isn’t, because there ain’t no such thing. Culture is almost always a mash up of various influences and is generally the better for infusions of ideas from here and there.

Not to mention, if us whites are all that superior, we need fear no competition from others. Not even if they are given a leg up. These folks are losers.

For a few years now the LDS has been very sensitive about their deeper past, esp. in regards to their history with African Americans. For example, if you watch any of their numerous genealogy conferences these days you will see that they really go out of their way to invite speakers of color to come in.

So yes, I suspect the LDS hierarchy are going to try and squash any effort that counters their agenda.

Oh, the prep for colonoscopy…

Know the experience all too well, having undergone colonoscopy. The procedure itself is actually the best part of the whole process, I thoroughly enjoyed looking at what the inside of my colon looks like on a monitor. The worst is definitely the night before where number two sounds like number one for hours.

Here’s the reality for the GOP: Trump is gonna take you down with him, and Pence will gladly sign the same bills that you want Trump to sign. And if you’re waiting for him to hit a point where even the base turns on him, you can put that thought out of your heads right now because it won’t happen. Your base didn’t begin disavowing Dubya until December 2008. If you cut your losses now, you might keep the presidency in 2020. But if you keep Trump, you can write off two elections.

Given that (1) the WH staff carefully filters the information he receives, and that (2) he self-selects television programs to limit his exposure only to those who praise him and (3) he doesn’t read anything outside of a few brief memos, he may not realize or care about the contempt and/or disgust most Americans feel toward him. He knows that his base is loyal and he has no interest in anyone else.

True, Trump himself is not expected to give a damn about such things, but the rest of us ought to.

Precedents. There are times when it’s proper to break them. War is a huge break of precedent. An unhinged Nazi supporter as president is another time. Precedents are like rules of thumb: they’re good until they’re not.

This is funny. The CBO predicts that if Trump tries to destroy the exchanges by ending subsidy payments, it will cost the government $200 billion more, and it will actually result in a million more people getting insurance! Subsidized people, the vast majority of exchange buyers, could end up getting free insurance, and unsubsidized buyers could get cheaper policies directly from carriers off the exchanges. So Trump has no magic button to blow up the ACA.

Generally to recover anything from ram you need access to it immediately after power has been removed and you need to drop it’s temperature below freezing rapidly to preserve the state of the capacitors. That buys you a few minutes to try to pull some useful data off it, but that can be pretty hit or miss depending on what was in memory just before shut down.

For the average schmo not something you really need to worry about. Bios generally only contains system settings so not likely to be anything in there to be concerned about.

Getting tired of the far left trying to make the term alt-left some kind of Trump legitimizing nazi propaganda. It’s gross that they’re using the murder of Heather Hayer to try and whitewash away the incredibly racist arguments that they made last year.

Texas ‘bathroom bill’ dies in special legislative session

Dominionist grifter Dan Patrick humiliated again. I think it was pressure from business that killed it. When a billionaire says “Hell no!” even the most obtuse Bible thumping quack politician will sit up and take notice.

Texas measures criticized as being discriminatory for limiting transgender people’s access to bathrooms in schools and public buildings died on Tuesday, as the House adjourned and ended its special legislative session.

Business leaders and civil rights groups had battled to defeat the bills, saying they advanced bigotry, would tarnish the state’s image and damage its economy. The measures were blocked by moderate House Republicans.

Adoption by Texas, the most populous Republican-dominated state, could have fed momentum in other socially conservative states on the issue, a flashpoint in the U.S. culture wars.

re: #193 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

I was hoping this would happen. I remember the last time Abbott and Patrick tried to pass that bill, the Speaker of the Texas Leg. used certain tactics to keep the bill from reaching the floor for a vote. Abbott and Patrick just wasted over $1 million in tax dollars trying to discriminate against some of their own citizens for sh*ts and giggles. I consider both of them to be nosy *ss SOBs because they are always trying to control others’ lives. The things they do have little to do with their religious beliefs and everything to do with appeasing a certain segment of their state’s population, abusing their power, and elevating their political profiles. They’re con-artists, both of them.

Where is this supposed champion of law enforcement when they need him to defend them? Telling us that “All Lives Matter” or “Blue Lives Matter”? If cops had waded into the melee and cracked Nazi skulls, would he have supported that or condemned it?

Several Confederate Monuments Removed in Baltimore Overnight

Statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson were taken down with a crane and placed on flatbed trucks early Wednesday morning, WBAL reports. A statue of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney and the Confederate Women’s Monument in Bishop Square Park were also removed.

Many local and state governments announced they would remove statues and other imagery from public land, or consider doing so, in the aftermath of Saturday’s white nationalist rally that killed one person and injured dozens more.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. It’s a day ending in Y, which means Trump’s busy reshuffling his chaotic WH and the media are thinking that maybe Trump will finally pivot to something else slightly more presidential.

Bullshit.

Trump is who is always has been. He’s always been a racist. He’s always been a misogynist. He’s always been a con artist. He’s always been a bully and a liar.

He isn’t changing a goddamned thing.

He was elected by the GOP precisely because he’s all these things. The GOP in Congress didn’t mind Trump’s election either, and their agreement on a regressive agenda is a common bond that stretches beyond Trump.

For instance, the GOP and Trump didn’t have a problem seeking to gut health coverage for 20-30 million Americans and are still agitating for it. Ryan refused to call Trump out for his bigotry throughout the campaign and even now he’s not going to seek impeachment for the high crime and misdemeanor of giving aid and comfort to right wing domestic terror groups like the KKK and Nazis. McConnell is even more craven. He’s been quiet, all while his GOP dominated chamber confirms Trump picks to the judiciary and to the cabinet that were and remain wholly unqualified for the positions and are intent on sabotaging functioning government.

A handful GOP in Congress may be having doubts, not about Trump, but that Trump’s overt support for white supremacists may harm their election chances. They are concerned more about Trump’s style than they are about Trump policies.

There are still far more GOPers like Rep. Tom McArthur refused to denounced Trump. That’s the same NJ rep who moved to resurrect zombie Trumpcare that would gut health coverage for 20-30 million Americans.

Oh, and the CBO just issued another report on Trump sabotaging CSRs.

These are the fuckers intent on ruining the nation and the GOP is continuing to enable this regime.

Good.

It’s a good reminder that the bulk of these statues and markers were erected during Jim Crow and then during the 1950s to remind black ppl that their rightful place is subservient to their white betters.

It’s also a good reminder that the people defending these statues as southern heritage and the Confederacy ignore that the South lost this war of southern insurrection, the goal of which was to preserve the institution of slavery.

So when they talk of southern pride or fly the confederate flag, demand to know what southern pride they’re identifying with - losing the civil war? having slaves? standing up for the states’ rights to maintain slavery?

And that goes doubly for people living above the Mason Dixon line who fly the flag - people like Kid Rock (who may be running for the US Senate as a GOPer - under his real name Rich Ritchie).

A lesson people need to learn: Nazis and white supremacists will always find someone to go after. Remove all the blacks, then there are the Jews. Remove the Jews, then there are the gays. Remove the gays, then there are women.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

2% of the world’s population has chosen to divorce itself from the reality that 98% of the world lives in. Our American right wing comprises about 2% of the world’s population. Even if our alt-right thinks they have alliances across Europe, once they start to actually discuss particular points of policy their differences are readily apparent. About the only thing they agree on is hatred for anyone not considered part of their tribe.

You don’t counter this nonsense with logic. You counter it by not allowing it to be normalized, by not treating it as an equal viewpoint

we dont have to have an epistemological argument about the nature of reality every time a crackpot comes along spouting ideological nonsense.

Giuliani falls, hurts leg, calls himself a tough guy and his wife ‘Nurse Nancy.

I tried to get up but [my wife] Judith ordered me not to move. If it hadn’t been for her, the injury would have been a lot worse. I now call her ‘Nurse Nancy.’ I swear to God, it was my first day of vacation and we’d planned to play a lot of golf. I don’t think I will be playing golf for a few weeks. But I am already up and limping around. I’m a tough guy, so this isn’t going to stop me.”

Nurse Nancy concurs.

“It is a good thing that I am a trained nurse, because when he fell, I saw his leg had fallen in an unnatural way. Our guests wanted to pick him up — he’s a tough guy and he wanted to get up — and I said he should not move. It was an instant red flag. When I looked at the limb, I knew if he got up, it would just do more damage.”

She added, “Rudy had to have surgery right away … He will be in the hospital for a few more days, but he’s in great spirits. He keeps calling me ‘Nurse Nancy.’ He is the eternal optimist. He may have to use crutches for a while.”

I’m surprised that neither of them worked in a reference to 9/11.

Trump always does seem to signal that there’s a story brewing when he makes these apparent non sequiturs that don’t relate to anything and suddenly a story brings them back into clear reference.

My guess is that Trump businesses were asked about various tax payments, and were asked to provide a position to the WaPo on a story they’re developing.

You know, because that Chinese wall and separating Trump businesses from the WH is so strict that Trump knows everything his businesses are doing and is profiting from everything they do because there’s no separation.

A little good news this morning - Spencer denied at University of Florida

White rights activist Richard Spencer is running out of campuses to host him.

The University of Florida shut down a request by Spencer’s group to have him speak on September 12.

“Amid serious concerns for safety, we have decided to deny the National Policy Institute’s request to rent event space at the University of Florida,” university president W. Kent Fuchs posted on Facebook.

“This decision was made after assessing potential risks with campus, community, state and federal law enforcement officials following violent clashes in Charlottesville, Va., and continued calls online and in social media for similar violence in Gainesville such as those decreeing: “The Next Battlefield is in Florida.”

Fuchs said the decision stemmed from the potential for violence, not the words or ideas.
“I find the racist rhetoric of Richard Spencer and white nationalism repugnant and counter to everything the university and this nation stands for,” Fuchs wrote.

“That said, the University of Florida remains unwaveringly dedicated to free speech and the spirit of public discourse. However, the First Amendment does not require a public institution to risk imminent violence to students and others.”

there’s another aspect to this - why i keep saying dont accept the framing in the first place. and why the solution is not to deconstruct, as i am about to do, but to not give it validity or normalcy

it’s not nazi *or* liberal. this is rhetorical twaddle

the alt right is built on ideological hate.
as was said above, the opposite of that is merely to not hate

liberal is, for the most part a political / socioeconomic position

you cannot lay the first two dimensional hate spectrum on the political spectrum and then interchange the names of the poles

Go Brooklyn.

In North Carolina, protesters toppled a Confederate statue Monday. It was a similar story elsewhere from Tennessee to Florida to Brooklyn.

That’s right, Brooklyn, where for more than 100 years, a plaque honoring Robert E. Lee has been affixed to this tree outside St. John’s Episcopal Church, a tree Lee himself planted in the early 1840s, during his time stationed at the nearby Fort Hamilton Army base.

But on Wednesday, the plaque is coming down, to be removed by custodial staff, according to Bishop Lawrence Provenzano of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. The diocese owns the church, which hasn’t been in active use since 2014 and is being sold.

The plaque had gone mostly under the radar, until it was raised by Brooklyn pastor Khader El-Yateem.

“We are demanding from our Army to rename these streets,” El-Yateem said.

El-Yateem, a candidate for City Council, was joined by a handful of protesters Tuesday, primarily concerned with the renaming of two streets inside the Fort Hamilton Army base: General Lee Avenue, the main road through the base, and Stonewall Jackson Drive.

“On our Army base, right here in our own neighborhood, we have signs that honor people who fought to preserve slavery,” El-Yateem said.

“Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson committed treason in defense of slavery,” said John Hagan, a local resident.

THE LONG HISTORY OF WHITE NATIONALISM IN AMERICA

Many historians, especially contemporary conservative historians, are inclined to view the marquee names of the American Revolution as opponents of slavery who made an immoral choice—allowing slavery to continue—for the sake of keeping the union together. There is no doubt that Thomas Jefferson, among others, was convinced that slavery could not and should not persist in the United States, at least in the long term. Yet even if we view Jefferson’s statements on this subject as sincere, it is equally clear that Jefferson was no racial egalitarian—see his “Notes on the State of Virginia,” where he states his belief that blacks “are inferior to the whites in the endowments both of body and mind.” The case against Jefferson as an egalitarian is even weaker when we note that Jefferson hoped that, after slavery was eventually abolished, freed blacks would be returned to Africa.

“IT’S NOT WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE, IT’S WHETHER YOU WIN”

It’s strange to think about the insecurities that must plague men like Gwen’s father, men who present themselves bigly. They like that word, too, bigly (“big league”); they also have a weakness for the expression “big time.” Why do bigly men, who have access to so much, still feel a need to degrade those who don’t, to humiliate them, to remind them when they are being given something, or twist it around, claiming that something has been taken from them? It might not be worth much, but I remember what the take-out was, that night at Gwen’s. The straw that broke her bigly father’s back was chicken from KFC.

Now, the greatest modern library today (it can be argued) is the New York Public Library System. How is he going to deal with that as a rival.

El-Yateem, a candidate for City Council, was joined by a handful of protesters Tuesday, primarily concerned with the renaming of two streets inside the Fort Hamilton Army base: General Lee Avenue, the main road through the base, and Stonewall Jackson Drive.

Maybe the Department of the Army can get started on whipping up some new names for:
Camp Beauregard

The Trump library will located in Trump tower’s lobby bathroom. It will contain no books, no papers, and only iconography of Trump’s MAGA bullshit spread across all kinds of things it’ll be pawning off at a greatly inflated price.

Alt-right cancels California book burning of ‘degenerate literature’ after organizer says he fears liberals

“Juan Cadavid organized a book-burning event with Mountain Center, California resident Brian Enright of the Three Percenters to be held at Huntington State Beach. The event was dubbed “Burning Degeneracy - CA,” but they have recently decided to cancel the event out of fear.

According to The OC Weekly, the group advertised the Aug. 19 event telling people that it was time to “purge their homes, State, and country of degenerate literature.”

I believe the term they used was ‘uninformed’ voters. Might work better in a Google search.

I’m sure we’ll need this at some point today.

I have that exact same cat condo…though Eartha’s taking up half my lap right now instead of using it.

ICE is deporting people injured on the job at the behest of companies who don’t want to pay worker’s compensation.

This hearkens back to the days when plantation owners called La Migra to raid the workers’ camps on the eve of payday…

Wait - these companies hired people they knew weren’t legal to hire, and when they got injured on the job, they sent ICE after them to avoid paying for it?

Shouldn’t ICE be arresting the management?

And the rest of the story…

“CEOs on President Trump’s top outside business-advisory group decided Wednesday to disband amid the tumult over his response to this weekend’s white-nationalist violence in Charlottesville, top business sources tell Axios,” said Allen on Wednesday.

Moments after Axios made the announcement that the Strategy and Policy Forum is disbanding, President Trump tweeted that he was ending both groups, apparently trying to take credit for the executives’ decision.

It has less to do with “attending a political rally”, and is mostly “they believe in White Supremacy and Ethnic Cleansing”

…and are not the kind of people to be content just keeping such views to themselves.
