I thought Donald Trump couldn’t shock me any more, but that press conference yesterday was a real jaw-dropper. Folks, we have a president who openly supports and makes excuses for neo-Nazis. It’s been obvious for a long time, of course, but yesterday he dropped the mask and made it undeniable.

Stephen digs into President Trump’s off-script/off-the-rocker press conference in which he contradicted statements given on Monday condemning hate groups.

Somebody was pointing out that what Trump wants more than anything is the respect of actual CEOs. Someone, I think it was on Maddow, pointed out that he really isn’t one - never headed a real, publicly traded company, never had a BoD to answer to, or shareholders. Never had to balance the needs/wants of all the stakeholders. He craves the respect of those who do that. And he’s losing it.

Similarly, he craves the respect of the New York Times, AND CNN, and he’s not going to get that, either.

He’s trapped in his own inability to break from his base, and from Putin. He won’t risk giving up the adulation he gets from the base, or the ego strokes Putin gives him (Working The Asset). He NEEDS their love, but it isn’t what he really WANTS.

Republicans, cut the outrage. It’s time to disown Trump. …

And let’s be clear: Republicans cannot say, “That’s not us — that’s just President Trump.” They supported him, they elected him, they defended him and they gave him the aura of a normal presidency. They cannot be the party of Lincoln and be the party of Trump. In that vein, we can dispense with Republicans’ “outrage,” “frustration,” “anger” and all other meaningless expressions of internal sentiment. Unless and until they are prepared to do something — not just send tweets — to politically disown Trump, the party is toast and none of its members should be elected or reelected.

How would they do this? First, elected officials must deny Trump the audience he so desperately craves. They need not appear with him, nor invite him to the Hill. (The State of the Union can be delivered from the White House or in writing; he would besmirch the House by appearing there.) Lawmakers and state officials should not troop to the White House for photo ops. They can communicate with the White House by phone or through aides. In short, Trump must be shunned and ostracized. He is not fit for polite company, let alone the presidency. He has demolished the rules of civilized behavior, and therefore should enjoy none of the ceremonial niceties that are extended to normal presidents.

Second, beyond resolutions condemning Trump’s remarks, every member of Congress should do his or her utmost to remove the neo-Nazi iconography in their districts and states. Neo-Nazis have claimed the Confederacy as their own — and therefore have reminded the rest of us that the Confederate statues are not tributes to patriotism, gallantry or liberty but to treason, inhumanity and slavery. That is why neo-Nazis identify with these symbols of the Old South. That is why they have no place in a democratic society built on the principle that “All men are created equal.” State and local officials need to carefully examine school curriculum to make sure students are not confused as to the heroes and the villains in the Civil War. Every student should learn to spot and debunk the “Lost Cause” propaganda. Perhaps April 9 should be a national holiday commemorating the Confederacy’s surrender and the magnanimity displayed by President Abraham Lincoln and U.S. generals toward their defeated foes.

Third, Cabinet members, sub-Cabinet officials, staffers and outside participants on councils, commissions and committees must leave the administration. It’s not enough, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, to look on with a pained expression as the president declares that some of the white nationalists were “very fine” folks. He deceived you and others as to what he would say and he has shown himself unfit. You cannot serve in the administration of a neo-Nazi sympathizer. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, why stay in an administration in which you command so little respect and in which you must lend your own reputation to a disgraceful president? (Defense Secretary Jim Mattis should remain, a final backstop to prevent a military disaster.)

Reminds me of Iranian supporters of far-right movements here in the West:

Alex Michael Ramos, a man of Puerto Rican descent who marched at last week’s white nationalist march in Charlottesville, Virginia, posted a video this week explaining why he felt comfortable marching with Klansmen and neo-Nazis even though they don’t technically consider him white.

In the video, Ramos said he was proud to be caught on video participating in an assault on a black teen down in Charlottesville.

“Yeah, I’m glad I stomped some ass out there, and I don’t give a f*ck,” Ramos said at one point. “I’m happy about it. You hurt my people, I guess we hurt you back.”

A little later in the video, Ramos said that he rejected the idea that he was a white supremacist, despite the fact that he proudly marched with neo-Nazis and the KKK.

“I’m not even f*cking white, so how am I a superior race?” he asked rhetorically. “I’m Spanish, listen: ‘Puerto Ricano.’”

It’s No Longer About Southern Heritage. In Fact, It Never Was.

As a kid growing up in Virginia, that’s the answer I always received when I questioned a Confederate flag hanging on the side of a shed or the statues of Confederate generals lining Monument Avenue in Richmond, our state capital. These weren’t symbols of intolerance, racism, or white supremacy. No, these were to honor the lives lost in a lost cause: a war that divided our country in two, a series of battles in which the Southern man bravely defended his homeland and tragically lost.

We Southerners have a strong sense of pride for our history and culture. We’re very good at lying to ourselves to fit the narrative we want to believe.

“There really was nothing to debate,” said one member of the forum, who described the president’s fiery Tuesday news conference as a “tripwire.”

Shortly after CNBC and other broke the news that the council was disbanding, Trump took to Twitter to say he was ending that forum and another featuring manufacturing leaders. By the time Trump made his statement, several executives had left the manufacturing group this week.

In a tweet, the president said he decided to dissolve the groups “rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople.”

They completely miss Hamilton’s points about ordered liberty and the absence of government not being liberty but instead license, or what we’d call anarchy. They’re the sorts that read Locke and thought “yeah, that makes sense” and never bothered to read Hobbes… or to realize the answer is probably somewhere between the two points.

My brother in Seattle and I were discussing this yesterday. He works for Boeing, and I’m a retired teacher. We see another angle in the white supremacist movement that gets very little attention. We think some of their frustration and anger comes from witnessing more and more POC, American Muslims and Jews, and LGBTQ citizens becoming more successful than they are. We took a page from their playbook, followed its directions, and moved up the socioeconomic ladder. I remember my parents insisting that education would be essential to my future. This occurred while I was growing up under Jim Crow in GA. They, my grandparents, neighbors, ministers, and church members drilled this into our heads. Many of us acted on this advice, educated ourselves, became employed in well-paying jobs, bought nice homes, etc. while many in the white supremacist movement saw little value in educating themselves beyond high school. Society was changing, but they weren’t, and now, years later, they look at the aforementioned groups and wonder how/why we got ahead of them. They don’t seem to understand that they screwed themselves. We didn’t screw them. They had become accustomed to being able to get good jobs with only high school diplomas, and in quite a few cases, with less than a high school education. We, on the other hand, worked within the system, and are now in a better socioeconomic position than they are, and they can’t stand it. They don’t address this in their rants, the media doesn’t address it, either, but my brother and I are thinking that upward mobility of the aforementioned groups has something to do with the alleged problem they have with members of these groups. I could be wrong, but I think this angle is worthy of further investigation, at least, from my perspective.

Josh Marshall last year said that a lot of the White Working Class that were attracted to Trump were the folks who were most dependent on white privilege. That is, their privilege in previous decades had gotten them the best jobs in manufacturing, where they didn’t have to get an education to have a middle class life. Those jobs went first to white folks, of course.

Then those jobs started going away, and being white became less and less ‘useful’. But they recognized the centrality of whiteness to their position in society, consciously or un-, and were drawn to someone who essentially told them he could restore that situation.

Even at my most rightish libertarian standing, I never bought the idea of taxation as theft. For a long time, I wanted to find a better system than income tax. But I eventually realized there isn’t one. Sufficient tariffs would destroy the economy through trade wars. A national sales tax or a VAT would be incredibly regressive (or if it excluded things like food and medicine, wouldn’t be enough).

I always go back to the quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes, “taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.”

there is another point (in the US) wrt taxes- lets say federal only:

i like to say the government is a partner in everything you make and in nothing you lose. so for a number say your tax rate is between 10 and 30%

for every dollar you earn, you keep 70 cents.

most people want to “save taxes” or “pay less taxes”. why? to save 30%?

no one spends money they dont have to in order to “save taxes”. the trick, if there is one is to find a way to legally deduct money you already have to spend (not always possible).

and you never save money by spending more money to save taxes. that equation cant work if the tax rate is less than 100%

you wanna get rich? earn more money. sounds glib. its not

it is far far easier to find a way to earn another 10k and pay 3k in taxes than to try and save 3k in taxes. budgets and spending can only be cut so much. earning potential is far more limitless

(guess what i do when im not out doing dangerous stuff)

Do these dimshits have any idea of the story behind the statue of Lenin in Seattle’s Fremont District? (Posobiec just basically “has no idea” about anything, so ignore him).
IIRC, it was sculpted and cast in the early ’80s in now-Slovakia: when the commies got the boot, it was taken down and stored: several years later, some guy from Seattle saw it, bought it, and had it shipped back home.
It’s basically there as a goof: and a source of mockery: I think the price is c. $100M - it supposedly cost $40M to ship: it weighs 7 tons.

Conservatives always resort to that BS after their real attitudes toward some other Americans see the light of day. My best friend is a white former co-worker. We’re friends not because I’m her token black friend. It’s because we have a lot in common and respect each other. I laugh when a conservative comes forward and says they have black “friends” because I know it’s a lie. I would suppose that most of them have very little contact with black persons, and the main source of their information about us comes from Fox News talking heads like Hannity and Carlson and RW blogs like Breitbart and Gateway Pundit. My best friend wouldn’t accept any amount of money to tell a lie about/on me, and I feel the same way about her. This is what friendship is about, and it has nothing to do with trotting out a pic of yourself with someone from another race when you’re under pressure and attempting to distance yourself from something ugly that I know you support based on your past words and actions. If you voted for Trump, you may not consider yourself to be a racist, but you definitely support one.

They focus on black slaveowners, as if that meant it wasn’t about race (while talking about ‘black-on-black crime’). They tell themselves MOST Southerners didn’t own slaves, so it wasn’t about slavery. And they look at the War entirely from the white perspective.

I don’t disagree. Lee was an officer in the US military, a graduate of West Point, he knew the gravity of the choice he made. He made his choice and history should judge him poorly for it. I was simply wondering if the Confederate Army would have stood a chance without Lee in a leadership role, especially if he was on the other side of the battlefields (where he should have been).
