Video: Stephen Colbert on Trump’s Disgusting Pro-Nazi Press Conference

Humor • Views: 34,251

YouTube

I thought Donald Trump couldn’t shock me any more, but that press conference yesterday was a real jaw-dropper. Folks, we have a president who openly supports and makes excuses for neo-Nazis. It’s been obvious for a long time, of course, but yesterday he dropped the mask and made it undeniable.

Stephen digs into President Trump’s off-script/off-the-rocker press conference in which he contradicted statements given on Monday condemning hate groups.

from cnn:

McConnell, who has a long history of working on civil rights issues, is deeply concerned that Trump is reopening long-festering racial tensions, something that could fan the flames ahead of demonstrations expected in Lexington, Kentucky.

a backhanded acknowledgement that we have never been “post-racial”

and who foments this “tension”?

the people shouting “no hate, no way”

or the people sporting paramilitary weaponry and shouting “we want to kill them”?

both sides, my ass

Republicans have been unreasonably successful with their standard practice of doing all the racist things (voter suppression etc.) while using ultra-microscopic fig leaves of language to let their enablers in the media pretend that Republicans aren’t all stone-cold racists.

If tr*mp’s revolting embrace of American Nazis puts an end to this model, some good will have come out of this.

Levant’s memo says flying Nazi flags, chanting Nazi slogans and the Nazi salute makes the alt-right racist.

I say being anti-immigration, demonizing people based on identity and then claiming not to believe in identity politics, makes the far-right hypocritical, xenophobic — and racist.

As Dems why don’t we say we want to take control of our racist past.

That we as Dems want those statutes obliterated from our shameful past and certainly are more than happy that they go in the dust bins of history were they belong.

The Conferate States have moved on and become Republican, so they moved on and don’t want to claim it any longer since all they say it’s Dem history.

So it’s up to Dems to erase it..we are up to the task. It’s time for us to take out our garbage.

Is Canada taking far-right extremism seriously?

The limited national security resources devoted to right-wing extremism is also based on a belief that such groups are fractious, ideologically incoherent and engage mainly in lower-level crime such as robbery or graffiti, said Stephanie Carvin, a former national security adviser for the Canadian government.

“The violence that results [from right-wing extremist groups] tends to be dealt with more at the police level than the national security level,” said Carvin, who teaches courses about security and terrorism at Carleton University in Ottawa.

“If you just look at the sheer number of cases of individuals who are foreign [jihadist] fighters, or potential foreign fighters or returnees, it still outweighs the potential actors on the far right.”

Doesn’t the bold sound remotely familiar to anybody?

I understand why the demands of people who aren’t Straight White Christian Males for equal treatment makes SWCMs uncomfortable - acknowledging the inequality tarnishes your belief in your own value as a Self Made Man.

But, you know, this is where Sanders went astray, telling the marginalized to stay on the margins a while longer, to just be patient while we take care of these ‘economically anxious’ white people.

It makes them uncomfortable when too many people who don’t look like them move into town and start wanting the supermarkets to carry foods with funny names, or worse setting up their own groceries, so you Latinos just sit down and be quiet for a while. Once we get these white people taken care of, we’ll get back to you.

It scares them when black people get angry about being shot by cops, so just sit down and be quiet for a while. Once we get these white people taken care of, we’ll get back to you.

It makes them uncomfortable to think about homosexuality or transgender, so just sit down and be quiet for a while. Once we get these straight people taken care of, we’ll get back to you.

Somebody was pointing out that what Trump wants more than anything is the respect of actual CEOs. Someone, I think it was on Maddow, pointed out that he really isn’t one - never headed a real, publicly traded company, never had a BoD to answer to, or shareholders. Never had to balance the needs/wants of all the stakeholders. He craves the respect of those who do that. And he’s losing it.

Similarly, he craves the respect of the New York Times, AND CNN, and he’s not going to get that, either.

He’s trapped in his own inability to break from his base, and from Putin. He won’t risk giving up the adulation he gets from the base, or the ego strokes Putin gives him (Working The Asset). He NEEDS their love, but it isn’t what he really WANTS.

Republicans, cut the outrage. It’s time to disown Trump. …

And let’s be clear: Republicans cannot say, “That’s not us — that’s just President Trump.” They supported him, they elected him, they defended him and they gave him the aura of a normal presidency. They cannot be the party of Lincoln and be the party of Trump. In that vein, we can dispense with Republicans’ “outrage,” “frustration,” “anger” and all other meaningless expressions of internal sentiment. Unless and until they are prepared to do something — not just send tweets — to politically disown Trump, the party is toast and none of its members should be elected or reelected.

How would they do this? First, elected officials must deny Trump the audience he so desperately craves. They need not appear with him, nor invite him to the Hill. (The State of the Union can be delivered from the White House or in writing; he would besmirch the House by appearing there.) Lawmakers and state officials should not troop to the White House for photo ops. They can communicate with the White House by phone or through aides. In short, Trump must be shunned and ostracized. He is not fit for polite company, let alone the presidency. He has demolished the rules of civilized behavior, and therefore should enjoy none of the ceremonial niceties that are extended to normal presidents.

Second, beyond resolutions condemning Trump’s remarks, every member of Congress should do his or her utmost to remove the neo-Nazi iconography in their districts and states. Neo-Nazis have claimed the Confederacy as their own — and therefore have reminded the rest of us that the Confederate statues are not tributes to patriotism, gallantry or liberty but to treason, inhumanity and slavery. That is why neo-Nazis identify with these symbols of the Old South. That is why they have no place in a democratic society built on the principle that “All men are created equal.” State and local officials need to carefully examine school curriculum to make sure students are not confused as to the heroes and the villains in the Civil War. Every student should learn to spot and debunk the “Lost Cause” propaganda. Perhaps April 9 should be a national holiday commemorating the Confederacy’s surrender and the magnanimity displayed by President Abraham Lincoln and U.S. generals toward their defeated foes.

Third, Cabinet members, sub-Cabinet officials, staffers and outside participants on councils, commissions and committees must leave the administration. It’s not enough, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, to look on with a pained expression as the president declares that some of the white nationalists were “very fine” folks. He deceived you and others as to what he would say and he has shown himself unfit. You cannot serve in the administration of a neo-Nazi sympathizer. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, why stay in an administration in which you command so little respect and in which you must lend your own reputation to a disgraceful president? (Defense Secretary Jim Mattis should remain, a final backstop to prevent a military disaster.)

Reminds me of Iranian supporters of far-right movements here in the West:

Alex Michael Ramos, a man of Puerto Rican descent who marched at last week’s white nationalist march in Charlottesville, Virginia, posted a video this week explaining why he felt comfortable marching with Klansmen and neo-Nazis even though they don’t technically consider him white.

In the video, Ramos said he was proud to be caught on video participating in an assault on a black teen down in Charlottesville.

“Yeah, I’m glad I stomped some ass out there, and I don’t give a f*ck,” Ramos said at one point. “I’m happy about it. You hurt my people, I guess we hurt you back.”

A little later in the video, Ramos said that he rejected the idea that he was a white supremacist, despite the fact that he proudly marched with neo-Nazis and the KKK.

“I’m not even f*cking white, so how am I a superior race?” he asked rhetorically. “I’m Spanish, listen: ‘Puerto Ricano.’”

Good for Nadler (my onetime Congressman)! - prominent Democrats really ought to be all over the Asshole-in-Chief’s pro-Nazi crap: but even with all the media-scanning I’ve been doing, as usual, GOPers seem to be getting all the airtime and ink. I emailed my Senators (Schumer and Gillibrand) over this: their official sites, while updated, have nothing about Charlottesville at all. Needless to add, outside of Gillibrand’s bot-reply I haven’t heard back: hopefully it’s because they’re busy researching impeachment-trial procedures……

ADD: At least my Representative (Carolyn Maloney, NY-12) has a forceful statement up: incl:

“No condemnation of Nazis and the anti-Semitism they espouse should end with: ‘but….’

“No denunciation of White Supremacists and the racial bigotry they embrace should end with: ‘on the other hand….’

It’s No Longer About Southern Heritage. In Fact, It Never Was.

“It’s about heritage, not hate.”

As a kid growing up in Virginia, that’s the answer I always received when I questioned a Confederate flag hanging on the side of a shed or the statues of Confederate generals lining Monument Avenue in Richmond, our state capital. These weren’t symbols of intolerance, racism, or white supremacy. No, these were to honor the lives lost in a lost cause: a war that divided our country in two, a series of battles in which the Southern man bravely defended his homeland and tragically lost.

We Southerners have a strong sense of pride for our history and culture. We’re very good at lying to ourselves to fit the narrative we want to believe.

Evidently Peter has chosen to unlearn these lessons, much to my and his family’s heartbreak and distress. We have been silent up until now, but now we see that this was a mistake. It was the silence of good people that allowed the Nazis to flourish the first time around, and it is the silence of good people that is allowing them to flourish now.

Trump abruptly ends manufacturing council after CEOs disband strategic and policy forum

Top executives have broken with President Donald Trump.

In a private phone call Wednesday afternoon, CEOs who were part of a strategic council to Trump agreed to disband the group and condemn Trump’s confrontational response to a violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“There really was nothing to debate,” said one member of the forum, who described the president’s fiery Tuesday news conference as a “tripwire.”

Shortly after CNBC and other broke the news that the council was disbanding, Trump took to Twitter to say he was ending that forum and another featuring manufacturing leaders. By the time Trump made his statement, several executives had left the manufacturing group this week.

In a tweet, the president said he decided to dissolve the groups “rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople.”

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both. Thank you all!

The events mark the biggest falling out yet between Trump and corporate America, which largely cheered his pro-business stances when he took office.

usiness leaders heard from employees and customers about their roles on the council.

In a statement, the Strategic and Policy Forum members said they “believe the debate over Forum participation has become a distraction from our well-intentioned and sincere desire to aid vital policy discussions on how to improve the lives of everyday Americans.”

Corporate leaders and notable Republicans distanced themselves from Trump this week because of his response to last weekend’s violence. A car allegedly driven by a suspected white nationalist rammed into counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring 19 others.

I honestly believe Trump is probably scared of Bannon. He probably figures that Bannon would go back to Brietbart or some other altright outlet and turn the altright against him. Single digit approval numbers would follow.

I agree; I also think Trump is genuinely afraid of Bannon for the very reason you mentioned. And I doubt it would be all that difficult for Bannon to turn the loonies against Trump - I’d say he could do it in relatively short order.

It’s like I said above - Trump can’t bring himself to risk losing the love of his base, which he needs but doesn’t respect, for the respect of people whose respect he craves.

Total Eclipse of the Sun
Forever 49¢ | Sheet of 16

On August 21, 2017, tens of millions of people in the United States will have an opportunity to view a total eclipse of the Sun. A total solar eclipse was last seen on the U.S. mainland in 1979, but only in the Northwest. The eclipse this summer will sweep a narrow path across the entire country—the first time this has happened since 1918. The U.S. Postal Service(r) anticipates this rare event with a stamp celebrating the majesty of solar eclipses.

The Total Eclipse of the Sun stamp is the first U.S. stamp to use thermochromic ink, which reacts to the heat of your touch. Placing your finger over the black disc on the stamp causes the ink to change from black to clear to reveal an underlying image of the moon. The image reverts back to the black disc once it cools. The back of the stamp pane shows a map of the eclipse path. You can preserve the integrity of your Total Eclipse of the Sun Forever(r) stamp pane with our protective sleeve specifically designed for stamp preservation. The stamp uses a photograph taken by astrophysicist Fred Espenak of a total solar eclipse that was seen over Jalu, Libya, on March 29, 2006. Mr. Espenak also took the photograph of the full moon that is revealed by pressing upon the stamp image. The reverse side of the stamp pane shows the path across the United States of the forthcoming August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse and gives the times that it will appear in some locations.

in fact in the u.s., accept it or not, taxation is voluntary

you keep your own records
you file your own reports

It all goes back to the idea that taxation is theft, and taxation of income is theft of labor. It’s bullshit, mostly because it fails to recognize that without taxation and the state, there is no ability to form a contract, and those with more power/resources/followers can simply take your labor.

The glibertarian movement likes to think that all problems come from government. They completely miss Hamilton’s points about ordered liberty and the absence of government not being liberty but instead license, or what we’d call anarchy. My brother in Seattle and I were discussing this yesterday. He works for Boeing, and I’m a retired teacher. We see another angle in the white supremacist movement that gets very little attention. We think some of their frustration and anger comes from witnessing more and more POC, American Muslims and Jews, and LGBTQ citizens becoming more successful than they are. We took a page from their playbook, followed its directions, and moved up the socioeconomic ladder. I remember my parents insisting that education would be essential to my future. This occurred while I was growing up under Jim Crow in GA. They, my grandparents, neighbors, ministers, and church members drilled this into our heads. Many of us acted on this advice, educated ourselves, became employed in well-paying jobs, bought nice homes, etc. while many in the white supremacist movement saw little value in educating themselves beyond high school. Society was changing, but they weren’t, and now, years later, they look at the aforementioned groups and wonder how/why we got ahead of them. They don’t seem to understand that they screwed themselves. We didn’t screw them. They had become accustomed to being able to get good jobs with only high school diplomas, and in quite a few cases, with less than a high school education. We, on the other hand, worked within the system, and are now in a better socioeconomic position than they are, and they can’t stand it. They don’t address this in their rants, the media doesn’t address it, either, but my brother and I are thinking that upward mobility of the aforementioned groups has something to do with the alleged problem they have with members of these groups. I could be wrong, but I think this angle is worthy of further investigation, at least, from my perspective.

Josh Marshall last year said that a lot of the White Working Class that were attracted to Trump were the folks who were most dependent on white privilege. That is, their privilege in previous decades had gotten them the best jobs in manufacturing, where they didn’t have to get an education to have a middle class life. Those jobs went first to white folks, of course.

Then those jobs started going away, and being white became less and less ‘useful’. But they recognized the centrality of whiteness to their position in society, consciously or un-, and were drawn to someone who essentially told them he could restore that situation.

I’m all out of f*cks to give in regard to white supremacists and their whining after they’ve f*cked up and are being mocked and ridiculed, losing their jobs, and being exposed as the anti-democratic, anti-American jackasses that they are. When Kessler announced this rally, I made it my business to find out what the real goal of the rally would be, which white supremacist groups would be participating, and the speakers that would be invited. Kessler can make any BS claim he wants to now, but I read over and over again the plans these groups made to bring violence to C’ville. He and his supporters must think some of us don’t know the vile and violent things they’re saying on their websites. I make it my business to keep up with what they’re doing, so I know the violence they engaged in in C’ville was agreed upon before any of them went there.

There was a time I really thought taxation was theft. I was probably 10 or so at the time, and this conviction lasted only until first contact with a reasonable counterpoint.

Now I simply ask: When was the last time a thief took from you a fraction of what you have, according to rates ultimately set by a representative democratic process?

Even at my most rightish libertarian standing, I never bought the idea of taxation as theft. For a long time, I wanted to find a better system than income tax. But I eventually realized there isn’t one. Sufficient tariffs would destroy the economy through trade wars. A national sales tax or a VAT would be incredibly regressive (or if it excluded things like food and medicine, wouldn’t be enough).

I always go back to the quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes, “taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.”

They’re the sorts that read Locke and thought “yeah, that makes sense” and never bothered to read Hobbes… or to realize the answer is probably somewhere between the two points.

the free markets concept tends to work best when all the players are either small or of more or less equivalent size. otherwise it’s not a free market

This right here, IMHO, is what forms the core of their anger - and that anger is fuelled by resentment. Yet rather than admit they’ve screwed themselves, they project that outward and scapegoat those who are now in a better socio-economic position.

This ties into their (fatuous) argument that “white people are being oppressed”. Of course, they’re not, but from their point of view, if everyone else is movin’ on up, and they aren’t, then they conclude that they’re the victims of some monstrous conspiracy to deprive them of what they believe is rightfully theirs.

there is another point (in the US) wrt taxes- lets say federal only:

i like to say the government is a partner in everything you make and in nothing you lose. so for a number say your tax rate is between 10 and 30%

for every dollar you earn, you keep 70 cents.

most people want to “save taxes” or “pay less taxes”. why? to save 30%?

no one spends money they dont have to in order to “save taxes”. the trick, if there is one is to find a way to legally deduct money you already have to spend (not always possible).

and you never save money by spending more money to save taxes. that equation cant work if the tax rate is less than 100%

you wanna get rich? earn more money. sounds glib. its not

it is far far easier to find a way to earn another 10k and pay 3k in taxes than to try and save 3k in taxes. budgets and spending can only be cut so much. earning potential is far more limitless

(guess what i do when im not out doing dangerous stuff)

Or they’ll point back to Woodrow Wilson or other former presidents who had slaves or were known to be bigots as proof that Trump’s perfectly fine to say and do what he has - signaling that it’s okay to be a Nazi and all that it stands for.

Just watch.

Wilson was the last president whose family owned slaves. He set back civil rights by decades through his actions. And the modern GOP is fine to do more of the same.

The parties have completely flipped their positions from where they were 100 years ago, or even 60 years ago (when the GOP finally flipped to the segregationists/bigoted side and Democrats pushed and got civil and voting rights acts passed to end segregation.

There is no question they are angry that others like you have moved up the socioeconomic ladder while they remain on the lower rungs. They don’t see the amount of hard work POC and women have had to do to move on up, so they assume you got there because of “affirmative action” or tokenism. Meanwhile, they assume that they should be advanced merely for being white (and male), without really doing anything to deserve it.

Some might call it “economic anxiety,” but it’s really racism and white entitlement.

“Trumpers don’t get irony or humor, do they?”

That’s the first thing that entered my mind after I read that the RNC suddenly rejects white supremacism. I’m no fool. After watching GOPers pander to them for over 40 years, I’m suffering no delusion that they’re really rejecting them at this point. They’re simply weighing in to make it appear that they oppose it. Their actions show the exact opposite of what their “official” statement says. I live in America while being black, and as far as I’m concerned, f*ck the white supremacists, f*ck the RNC, f*ck the cowardly GOP politicians. F*ck them, f*ck them all. White supremacists are the bread and butter of the GOP, and while some may be buying their BS, I’m not, and never will. I’ve seen the way they return again and again to support America’s ugly underbelly of racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, Islamophobia, misogyny, etc. to fill their campaign coffers and win elections. Their denouncing white supremacy at the present time does not resonate with me because their political history has taught me that they don’t believe the things they’re saying themselves from one minute to the next. Their main focus now is on saving their political hides.

The awesomeness of this? The statue of Lenin is for sale but no one wants to pay the asking price.

[Embedded content]

Do these dimshits have any idea of the story behind the statue of Lenin in Seattle’s Fremont District? (Posobiec just basically “has no idea” about anything, so ignore him).
IIRC, it was sculpted and cast in the early ’80s in now-Slovakia: when the commies got the boot, it was taken down and stored: several years later, some guy from Seattle saw it, bought it, and had it shipped back home.
It’s basically there as a goof: and a source of mockery: I think the price is c. $100M - it supposedly cost $40M to ship: it weighs 7 tons.

“I think GDF had the best take on this. Something like “Showing off your collection of black conservative Pokemon proves nothing” IIRC.”

Conservatives always resort to that BS after their real attitudes toward some other Americans see the light of day. My best friend is a white former co-worker. We’re friends not because I’m her token black friend. It’s because we have a lot in common and respect each other. I laugh when a conservative comes forward and says they have black “friends” because I know it’s a lie. I would suppose that most of them have very little contact with black persons, and the main source of their information about us comes from Fox News talking heads like Hannity and Carlson and RW blogs like Breitbart and Gateway Pundit. My best friend wouldn’t accept any amount of money to tell a lie about/on me, and I feel the same way about her. This is what friendship is about, and it has nothing to do with trotting out a pic of yourself with someone from another race when you’re under pressure and attempting to distance yourself from something ugly that I know you support based on your past words and actions. If you voted for Trump, you may not consider yourself to be a racist, but you definitely support one.

Although it was used by some as a justification for voting for him last year, Trump is not a strong leader, he’s a freaking coward. On Monday, he shat on the entire nation, stepped in it and spread it around the globe, and he knows it. He’s being vilified at a level that he’s never experienced before in his life. He’s toxic at an international level. This is why he hasn’t called C’ville’s mayor and why he didn’t attend any event related to Heather Heyer’s death.

Another profile in courage:

Vice President Mike Pence avoided directly answering a reporter’s question about whether he thought, like President Donald Trump, that there were “very fine people on both sides” who participated in the Charlottesville, Virginia, protests over the weekend that resulted in the death of one woman.

“What happened in Charlottesville was a tragedy, and the President has been clear on this tragedy and so have I. I spoke at length about this heartbreaking situation on Sunday night in Colombia, and I stand with the President,” he said during a joint statement with the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet.

Someone should remind the Vice President that he doesn’t serve at the pleasure of the president. He’s independently elected, and if he really wants to fuck with Trump, remind him that Pence got more electoral votes than Trump did.

They’re spinning as fast as they can to change the narrative, and it’s not working as well as it has worked for them in the past. First at bat today was Ryan with his tax cut BS. Now, it’s Woolery, D’Felon, Ingraham, and some other Forever Trumpers. They ‘ll continue trying to deflect and project, but in this instance, we have their number and they know it. And now, the world knows it. The opposition to Trump and his supporters today is at an all-time high. For the first time in his 71 years, Trump is having to experience what rejection by millions feels like, and that’s a d*mn shame because many Americans must face rejection in one form or another every day. For me, the cruelest thing about the rejection some of us must deal with every day is that it comes from people like Trump, Woolery, D’Felon, and others in the GOP stable of deplorables. All of them are our fellow citizens and don’t have one scintilla of shame about the fact that one of their fondest wishes is to make us outcasts in our own country just so they can feel better about themselves.

Ars Technica - Racist Daily Stormer goes down again as CloudFlare drops support

All week, the infamous hate site Daily Stormer has been battling to stay online in the face of a concerted social media campaign to shut it down. The site lost its “dailystormer. com” domain on Monday after first GoDaddy and then Google Domains blacklisted it from their domain registration services.

The site re-appeared online on Wednesday morning at a new domain name, dailystormer. ru. But within hours, the site had gone offline again after it was dropped by Cloudflare, an intermediary that defends customers against denial-of-service attacks.

Daily Stormer’s Andrew Anglin reported Cloudflare’s decision to drop the site in a post on the social media site Gab. His post was first spotted by journalist Matthew Sheffield.

Theoretically, you don’t need a service like Cloudflare to publish a website. In practice, however, a site as controversial as the Daily Stormer is going to be swamped by distributed denial of service attacks if it doesn’t enjoy the protection of a service like Cloudflare.

The Daily Stormer, which takes its name from a newspaper published by the Nazis from 1923 until World War II, is one of the most openly racist sites on the Internet. It regularly attacks Jews and celebrates the Holocaust. Attacks on racial minorities, feminists, and gays and lesbians are common.

The “Lost Cause” crowd had decades to convince successive generations of Americans that while slavery was wrong, the Confederacy were a band of noble men fighting for what they felt was “right” and we should respect them even if we disapprove of what they were fighting in defense of.

It’s going to take just as long to stamp out this romanticized vision of what the Confederacy truly was.

It was a personal decision on his part that he did not take easily.

And anything that might be described as valor, patriotism or sense of duty on the part of Confederate participants in the Civil War should be treated just as that; a matter of personal or family heritage, and not as something to be honored by any public monument or on government property, save in a museum or at a historical site.

The amount of delusion it takes to deny what the Confederacy was all about is quite large.

Yet many still seem to do it.

I think at the heart of it, nobody wants to admit that regular people do horrible things, for horrible reasons, without being horrible in every way. Thus, they excuse slavery because the South didn’t invent slavery. They buy into the ‘Irish Slaves’ nonsense, because it makes it not about race. They focus on black slaveowners, as if that meant it wasn’t about race (while talking about ‘black-on-black crime’). They tell themselves MOST Southerners didn’t own slaves, so it wasn’t about slavery. And they look at the War entirely from the white perspective.

“Well, looks like the March on Google is off. Because of “credible alt-left terrorist threats.”“

I find it very amusing how quickly these armchair warriors drop that facade once their true motives are revealed and they begin catching hell from others who don’t inhabit their special little places. They’re wimps and cowards.

The education system repeatedly fails the nation in the most basic of ways. You’ve got politicians sticking their noses and manipulate education standards and undermining the history lessons that need to be taught.

The same people who complain that politicians are pandering to their constituents by getting rid of these Confederate statues and demanding that Confederate flags no longer fly are ignorant that the reason those Confederate flags are flying and those Confederate statues were erected in the first place was because the white supremacist bigots wanted to make a constant reminder to blacks that their rightful place was under the heel of the whites who had just 2-3 generations earlier been slave owners.

re: #342 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

It was a personal decision on his part that he did not take easily.

And anything that might be described as valor, patriotism or sense of duty on the part of Confederate participants in the Civil War should be treated just as that; a matter of personal or family heritage, and not as something to be honored by any public monument or on government property, save in a museum or at a historical site.

I don’t disagree. Lee was an officer in the US military, a graduate of West Point, he knew the gravity of the choice he made. He made his choice and history should judge him poorly for it. I was simply wondering if the Confederate Army would have stood a chance without Lee in a leadership role, especially if he was on the other side of the battlefields (where he should have been).

According to Newt, Real Americans cheat on their spouses and divorce them for younger ones…over and over again!

I love that moment when Joe realizes what’s happening.
