Photo of the Day: GOP Rep. Rohrabacher Poses With Holocaust Denier Chuck C. Johnson at Assange Meeting

Chuck C. Johnson and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher pose in front of the Ecuadoran embassy in London. (Source: Facebook)

Here we see Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher posing on the steps of the Ecuadoran embassy in London with Holocaust-denying white supremacist Chuck C. Johnson (who is NOT ME), as they prepare to meet with Julian Assange. Johnson, of course, is making that hand sign that white supremacists love to pretend has nothing to do with white supremacism.

This is one of the more disgraceful things I’ve seen a Republican do this year, in a year when the GOP has thoroughly disgraced itself on so many levels.

Here are some other photos of Johnson, for comparison.

Chuck C. Johnson with racist killer of Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman

White supremacists Richard B. Spencer (L) and Chuck C. Johnson at the GOP convention

Chuck C. Johnson with Tila Tequila at a meeting of white supremacists

Chuck C. Johnson with Dutch anti-Muslim fanatic Geert Wilders

Chuck C. Johnson smiling creepily next to Lee Harvey Oswald’s sniper rifle at the JFK Museum in Dallas

Regarding the terrorist attack in Barcelona, sadly it’s been officially confirmed that 13 have been killed.

One attacker has been arrested, the other two are still holed up in a bar - seems to be a hostage situation.

From: ocregister.com

Rohrabacher is the only U.S. congressman to have visited Assange, his office said.

“I think it will have an earth-shattering political impact,” Rohrabacher said of the information he received from Assange. “It wouldn’t be so important if Democrats hadn’t focused so inordinately on the Russians. Democrats are creating a total upheaval over this.”

From dailycaller.com

The California congressman met with Assange along with conservative journalist [sic] Charles C. Johnson. Johnson is frequently attacked as just an internet troll, but he is well-connected to several key political figures. He told TheDC that he [Rage Furby] arranged the meeting between Rohrabacher and Assange.

Rohrabacher told TheDC that Johnson “stepped in as a friend” to help him on his overseas trip. The congressman went to London on his own dime and Rohrabacher is the first U.S. representative to visit Assange.

Trump Fake History.

“…Until World War II, rebellions by the Moros against American rule persisted long after 1914, and then the Moros then proceeded to fight against the Japanese invaders. Violence between the occupying forces and Moro Maranao broke out from 1921-1928. It was written that twenty five years of guerilla fighting have not solved the Moro Problem. in The New Republic in 1931. Troops with weapons had to guard the American school superintendent in certain Lanao districts.”

We know that, up to now, some of you have made an effort to reserve judgment on the question of whether or not President Donald Trump is an anti-Semite, and to give him the benefit of the doubt. re: #78 I Would Prefer Not To

How could Trump be learning? He harshly condemned lots of things in the past (Mexicans, Muslims, Rosie, War Vets). The only thing he hasn’t harshly condemned is Nazis and Putin.

The same way he learned that his bogus “Red River” plaque at his bogus golf course was bogus:

In a phone interview, Mr. Trump called himself a “a big history fan” but deflected, played down and then simply disputed the local historians’ assertions of historical fact.

“That was a prime site for river crossings,” Mr. Trump said. “So, if people are crossing the river, and you happen to be in a civil war, I would say that people were shot — a lot of them.”

In other words: I iz hiztorian.

You know, if I had property that I thought was near the site of a heavily contested area during the Civil War where people were said to die, I wouldn’t buy a golf course on it. Thankfully Trump has never gone into Flanders. I’d hate to see one of his trashy golf clubs where men died in WWI.

As someone who had a formative moment researching for a school paper about the Filipino-American war, it’s extremely depressing that this somehow is the only thing in the American consciousness during that time of American colonization: a bloody fucking anti-Muslim myth that is an insult to Filipinos, Muslims, and Pershing himself. And it is a particularly ugly and pernicious myth indeed.

I don’t have to tell you this but I can’t believe I have to read in 2017 a statement by a Senator, Senator King of Maine saying the KKK isn’t welcome in his state of Maine. No slight obviously meant on King. The point is damn it, we have to condemn the KKK in 2017? Maybe I’m just naive but when I was growing up in the 90’s, it seemed like we all agreed the KKK and Nazis sucked. Sure we had some other disagreements. Some of us thought Bill Clinton getting a BJ wasn’t a big deal and some did but really, the comeback of the KKK and Neo-Nazis just troubles the fuck out of me. And you know what? It’s young people. It’s very easy to act like hate is generational but you know what, my dad’s father who was born in 1913 was disgusted by the N-word. Remove the confederate memorial in front of the Lubbock County Court House

I didn’t even know there was a Confederate memorial in Lubbock. It seems odd. No one from Lubbock fought in the Civil War for the very good reason that the town did not exist until 1892. A few elderly veterans did settle there later but that is a very thin line of reasoning for a public monument. The real story becomes obvious though when you realize that the monument was installed in 1963, at the height of the civil rights era.

re: #71 I Would Prefer Not To

On the plus side, Michael Chabon, one of my fav writers and his wife just published this.

To our fellow Jews, in the United States, in Israel, and around the world:
We know that, up to now, some of you have made an effort to reserve judgment on the question of whether or not President Donald Trump is an anti-Semite, and to give him the benefit of the doubt. Some of you voted for him last November. Some of you have found employment in his service, or have involved yourself with him in private business deals, or in diplomatic ties.

more here

OMG - that’s tough stuff from Chabon. And all the worse for being, at bottom, true. It isn’t, IMO, so much the issue of “whether or not Donald Trump is an antisemite” (personally, I don’t think so: but only because he is too stupid and narcissistic to think that way) - but that he gives space (wide-open space, the sort typically measured in AUs) to those who are. The kind of space that isn’t really going to filled by blithering about how much they “love Israel”….

i would have liked to see one change - in the second to last para, twice:

Anyone Jew, anywhere, who does not act to oppose President Donald Trump and his administration acts in favor of anti-Semitism; anyone Jew who does not condemn the President, directly and by name, for his racism, white supremacism, intolerance and Jew hatred, condones all of those things.

the last para, to fellow jews is fine

Another day behind reading these threads that are building fast.

But goddamn is this frustrating.

I have always wondered how Germany in the late 30s came to be the country that would launch an evil group like Hitler and the Nazis.

I could never quite get how so many people didn’t stop it.

I never realized all the answers to that would be revealed to me in 2015 through 2017, and I would not have to read about it. No, I am learning because we are seeing the same issues right now.

And the biggest issue…a political party in control sitting around paralyzed by it all and hoping they could work with him to get something out of it all. They are normalizing another Hitler.

And then you read comments by those that Twitter wondering why we can’t accept some cheap words that “say the right thing” when it is obvious the mouth stating those things is only blowing smoke to cover his real thoughts.

So from how could it happen to it happens just like this.

And now we get to face the fact that America is now a danger to the rest of the world.

May the entire Republican party rot in hell. And those people that voted for Trump and still support him to any degree…to hell with you too.

Obviously some manager’s bullshit idea to paper over Twitter’s refusal to do anything about the endemic abuse problem by making people think they’ve addressed their complaints.

This is exactly indicative of the absolute worst aspect of Twitter’s (and to a larger extent Silicon Valley’s) corporate culture. They think they can play games with people’s heads instead of cutting off the rotting, gangrenous segment of their user base that threatens the community they’re trying to monetize. That they’d rather have a larger community constantly riddled with toxicity whose data they can sell than a smaller and healthier one.

celebrating those that attacked the united states. fought against the united states

the rest of this is all distraction - culture, history, etc
why they fought or the fact that we reunited as a country is not relevant and never was

when and why the statues were erected is, somewhat.

in the end, the blunt point remains - these people were the enemy of the uninterrupted united states under the constitution.

the statues were erected by those who had the power. today, 2017, it is perverse to continue to glorify the losing enemy

There’s a Jefferson Davis Park in Ridgefield WA. It’s privately run, but when the Jefferson Davis Highway was removed from US 99, the locals felt a need to have a park.

A lot of southerners settled in Oregon and Washington so there’s a surprising amount of pro-Confederate sentiment (if you will) there.

The 3/5 compromise is way too complicated for twitter. Simple facts like the south wanted it to be larger than 3/5 and the north wanted it to be less than 3/5 get lost in the shuffle and it just goes to hell from there.

The conversation basically went like this:

Southern States: so, the census and representation in the House? Yeah, we want to count the negroes.

Northern States: but you said they’re not people, they’re chattel. You shouldn’t get to count any of them, that’d be like counting horses.

Southern States: fuck you, we’re leaving.

Northern States: fine.

Madison: How about we count 60%?

That’s a slight over simplification, as there were other numbers ranging from zero to 100% before they settled on that. There’s also the issue of taxation under the Articles of Confederation that was based on population and included slaves, rather than just “wealth”. But that’s the nature of our constitution, it’s a whole series of compromises.

Jon the Deplorable is just being a disingenuous troll by raising doubt as to the origin of the US Civil War.

Slavery is the essential issue that made civil war inevitable.

Without a slavery dispute, it is impossible to believe that tensions over tariffs, manufacturing vs agriculture etc. could have possibly led to civil war.

With a slavery dispute in place, it is impossible to imagine how better US political leadership in the 1800s could have avoided a civil war. President Buchanan being a fuckwit whose place at the bottom of the US presidential ranking was secure until 11/9/2016 surely did not help, but his job was basically impossible.

In the early 1960s, the US Navy engaged in a desperate race to build as many of the revolutionary new Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBNs) as possible. 41 were completed in just 8 years and they served until replaced by the Ohio class in the early 1990s. The program took precedence over all other submarine construction, so much so that by 1966, the Navy had 38 SSBNs but only 20 nuclear powered attack submarines. The rest of the submarine force relied on modernized World War Ii boats and the dozen or so post-war conventional subs that had been built.
This effort happened to coincide with the Civil War Centennial, which was in many ways the high water mark of Confederate acceptance and the sentimental glorification of the Lost Cause.
In contrast to all naming conventions before or since, two of the boats were named for Confederate heroes, including the only US Navy vessel named for Robert E. Lee. Another was named for Stonewall Jackson and one for pre-war (and rabidly pro-slavery) southern leader John C. Calhoun.

I feel like this has gotten lost in everything else going on today:

Sen. Bob Corker slammed President Donald Trump’s handling of the racially motivated protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, charging that the President “has not demonstrated he understands the character of this nation.”

The Tennessee Republican told reporters in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Thursday that he thinks there must be “radical changes” within the White House.

“The President has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to be successful,” Corker said, according to a video posted by local news website nooga.com.

If I was setting odds on which elected Republicans would have said something like this, I’m not even sure I’d have posted odds for Corker, and just included him in “the Field.”

Short, sharp commentary by Josh Marshall - The Bomb Bursts. It Will Keep Happening.

Everything we are seeing stems almost inevitably from the decisions the country made, collectively, last November. We elected a President driven by white racial grievance. That is the fulcrum and driving force of his politics. It’s no surprise that a big outbreak of white supremacist violence would lead us to a moment like this. We also elected a President who is an abuser and a predator. I’ve analogized him before to an abusive man in an abused household - only his house is now the country, now with all the cumulative exhaustion, warped perceptions and damage that are the common lot of people living with and trapped with violent predators, addicts or people with certain profound mental illnesses.

As things get worse, as more people turn against him, Trump gets more wild and unbridled. He lashes out more aggressively. There’s no kill switch on this escalating aggression. It only builds. This morning he’s tearing into senators who’ve dared to criticize him and essentially declared war on one who is key to preserving the GOP’s senate majority next year. He compensates for ebbing support by redoubled aggression. It’s a self-reinforcing, self-accelerating cycle. Vicious people can be helpful in a cynical way. But vicious and self-destructive people are dangerous to everyone around them.

So I see that @Jack finally subtweeted Trump this afternoon.

Contrary to what many probably feel, that sure sounds to me like they are really ready to pull the plug on Ill Douche. If one remembers, Jack did a similar thing right before Milo got the boot, publicly responding to Leslie Jones on his account.

But it’s not an open-and-shut case, for Twitter is in a mess of their own making. Inattention to Trump and his hate speech over the years helped create this monster. Plus there’s no doubt obvious legalities with suspending someone’s account when he’s now tied to the federal records act, a problem they let happen.

Practically everything connected to Trump right now is untenable. His life — not just his squatting of the White House, but his entire life — is a house of cards ready to cave in at a moment’s notice.

And that includes his Twitter. It’s not a matter of if. It’s when.

When tr*mp is finally confronted with the full scope of his abysmal failures, his deepest instinct will be to do anything to avoid having to deal with it.

Unfortunately, this particular malignant narcissist has a very unusual coping mechanism available to him — he can end the world in a nuclear holocaust.

IMO he will definitely try this if he gets cornered, so the US military had best have plans in place to deal with this likely contingency.

Biloxi, not far from where I am is home to the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library (yes, it’s actually a thing). I wonder if there will be a push to close it down.

The Mayor of Biloxi recently voted to NOT fly the MS state flag as city hall. For anyone not aware, the MS flag includes the Confederate battle flag, there’s been a push to remove it but that’s a long shot in a deep red state like this.

Eegad! FEMA paid more than 14 million dollars to rebuild the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library after it was severely damaged in Hurricane Katrina. The State of Mississippi also supports it though it is actually run by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

A blitzkrieg impeachment. Get it done and dusted in one day. Impeachment by the House in the morning, conviction by the Senate early afternoon, removal from office by 5 PM at the latest.

I honestly wonder what the quickest we could do impeachment, start to finish. There were basically 3-4 days of floor debate in the House for Clinton’s impeachment. The Judiciary Committee reported the resolution on December 15, 1998, and the vote was held on December 19 (yes, during a lame duck session). The Senate didn’t begin the trial until January 7, 1999. It took a month for that impeachment trial (closing arguments were made February 8, and closed door deliberations went from the 9th through the 12th when they voted).

Depending on whether Paul Ryan has a spine surgically implanted during the recess, he could use his power as Speaker to get Articles of Impeachment through the House fairly quickly. Assuming Trump pisses off another 20 Republican Senators before then, the trial can probably be pretty quick.

Since it’s a purely political process that has no real procedural requirements (as far as I know) other than the specified vote margins to impeach and convict, one day seems perfectly reasonable to me. The case against tr*mp is a matter of public record. Of course members of Congress do love to bloviate for the cameras, which would slow things down.

Perhaps wannabe bloviators could be persuaded to act fast instead as a show of force vs. tr*mp and tr*mpism, which the Republicans will mostly be in favor of if/when they get their marching orders from the GOP donor class that tr*mp is a failure and never-Conservative to be disposed of ASAP.

But tr*mp’s cabinet is personally beholden to tr*mp. Ain’t happening.

Congressional Republicans are horrible, but they can and will act vs. tr*mp if tr*mp’s poll numbers get low enough and/or if the GOP donor class starts issuing orders.

You need a majority of the VP and cabinet. Figure Mattis is a yes “for the sake of the nation.” Pence, Sessions, Price, Chao, Zinke, and Perry will take orders from the donor class. Elaine Duke is currently acting Secretary of DHS, she served under both Bush and Obama, so maybe she’s also a yes in the Mattis camp. That’s 8, you need one more vote. Maybe it’s Purdue, if he’ll take orders from the donor class. Or maybe Pence has to promise to keep one of the others on for a while?

I mentioned yesterday that it took until 2006 for Bush to fall below 80% among Republicans. And another year to get below 70%. In both cases, the drop to 80% and then to 70% were basically from one poll to the next. He was pretty consistently in the mid-80s and then - boom - floating around 80% for a year. Then again - boom - under 70% and he never recovered. I suspect we’ll see something similar with Trump, all of the sudden, there’s going to be a big drop, and then there’ll probably be another one. And then it will be over.

He is a National Socialist; he is a troop leader with a gift for improvisation, personally courageous and extraordinarily inventive. These are the kinds of soldiers we need”.[85]

I just got an E-mail from the Coen Bros. production company. They whittled down the 750 applicants for an extra spot in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” to 100.

I was one of those selected.

Round two whittles that down to the final sixty.

There will be a clothing fitting at the end of the month; filming is in September.

My hand comes out of the cast from my surgery Monday the day before filming starts.

Thank you for coming to the Buster Scruggs casting call in Scottbluff, NE. There were over 750 candidates that came to the call, of those 750 we selected 100 to show to Ethan and Joel Coen.

You were one of those 100. Unfortunately, only 60 people will be working these dates.

Ethan and Joel have not seen the photos yet as they have been on a very difficult shoot in the mountains of Colorado. We will show them the photos on Friday of this week and will be in touch with you over the weekend or on Monday. Fittings will be in Scottsbluff on Wednesday or Thursday August 23 and 24. re: #458 Blind Frog Belly White

Think about this, though - If Bannon had to cold-call a journalist and reveal that our entire military threat to North Korea was all just a bluff as a way to distract from disastrous self-inflicted news cycles, how bad must he think the news is.

And then Trump draws all the attention right back to the same stuff.

How many people are talking about Bannon’s interview this afternoon?

I fucking knew it.

I know. All that bullshit about not knowing it was an interview, that he called up a stranger who just happens to be a Liberal journalist, to chat.

So…I’m on vacation! Woot!

Tomorrow morning my wife and I (and two friends) will fly north to Halifax, Nova Scotia for a week of peace and quiet.

I’ve never been there, pretty excited. There will be photos.

Yup. Bannon tried to switch the narrative around and failed because Trump dragged it right back. And now he can’t pull that same stunt ever again.

They’re quickly running out of distraction ammo.

I forget who said it, but someone on Twitter described them as ‘a bunch of mediocre people who think they’re super-geniuses.’

Sounds about right.

“… Brooks - one of 10 Republicans seeking the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate - discovered he was listed as “inactive” on voter registration lists when he arrived to cast his ballot in Huntsville this morning.

He wasn’t the only one.

Alabama Rep. Patricia Todd, a Birmingham Democrat, said she was also listed as inactive.

“This is screwed up! The (Secretary of State’s) office said they sent out postcards to every voter, I never got one and neither did my wife. I asked several other folks and they never received one,” Todd wrote on Facebook. “Don’t let them keep you from voting! You can vote even if you are inactive.”

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill confirmed anyone listed on the inactive list can still cast a ballot after they provide updated information.

“Being inactive does not affect an individual’s ability to vote if they update their information which they can do on Election Day,” Merrill said. …”

Wonderful place. If you can, make the day teio to Burntcoat Head Park on the Bay of Fundy, home of the worlds biggest tidal ranges. It’s amazing at low tide.

We have to update our systems. I along with all of my friends rarely visit the mailbox. My postage carrier hates me. (still leave a card with a 20 at xmas, because old school)

It’s always a shitshow of junk mail. You have to be so careful not to miss anything of import & for me, it’s never there.

I can’t wait to see that.

On Sunday (my very first out-of-country birthday!) we’re going to Clam Harbour Beach for their annual sand castle competition, and I think on Tuesday we’re going to drive to Prince Edward Island. We’ll spend Saturday exploring Halifax.

I’m so jacked to get out of Dodge for a few days. I need it and so does my wife.

“Bannon gives himself too much credit.”

He’s also delusional. Racism and anti-Semitism have been persistent problems for a very long time, and if he thinks revealing a bit of info about WH strategy for dealing with North Korea, he’s a very stupid person. Some Americans will always remember Trump’s failure to denounce Nazism and white supremacy far longer than they will his manufactured, BS of a magazine interview. I’m one of those persons.
