Bannon Latest Casualty of White House Circular Firing Squad

And nothing will change
Politics • Views: 39,310

Everybody saw this coming, and today Stephen Bannon is the latest Trump crony to get tossed under a very crowded bus.

Let’s face it, though: Bannon isn’t the problem. He was just someone Trump used to get into the White House, and this will change nothing about what Trump is doing.

But it will be amusing to watch the right wing lose its marbles (if they still have any to lose).

Yeah keep on telling yourself that the problem with Trump isn’t that he surrounds himself with bigoted assholes but that his advisers aren’t “real conservatives.” Face it, your ideology is an easily manipulated shit show.

Sane conservatives if you’re left, the problem frankly is your ideology. Your ideology easily lends itself to be manipulated by people like Bannon. Ask yourself why that is without blaming the left in 3…2…1.

Bannon’s going… going… gone…

Fired or quit. A friend asked what’s the difference.

If he was fired, that goes to Trump being pissed off about the interview enough to consider it Bannon as disloyal and incapable of being trusted further. If Bannon quit, that goes to Bannon being incapable of dealing with the shitshow he helped usher in.

Minor differences, but the end game is the same. The bigot-in-chief is still Trump, and he’s still pushing all kinds of baffling bs. There’s no one in Trump’s sphere who does policy, and Bannon was the only one remotely addressing that. With Bannon gone, there’s even less policy. It’ll be all Trump tweets all the time.

This is the chaos and sabotage from the inside that Trump’s GOP followers/supporters have long wanted. They think that government needs to be brought to heel so failing government is an outcome they want.

It’ll be fun to watch Breitbart pivot to claim that Trump is not a GOPer - but they’re already making that loop around. Democrats have been opposed to everything Trump’s done while GOPers have enabled everything Trump’s sought to do, but Breitbart (and Fox) don’t care about facts. Their viewers/listeners/readers don’t care either.

Krugman take:

“…So if Bannon is out, what’s left? It’s just reverse Robin Hood with extra racism.

On real policy, in other words, Trump is now bankrupt.

But he does have the racism thing. And my prediction is that with Bannon and economic nationalism gone, he will eventually double down on that part even more. If anything, Trumpism is going to get even uglier, and Trump even less presidential (if such a thing is possible) now that he has fewer people pushing for trade wars.”

re: #27 jaunte

Well, up til now (when it comes to Trump), the answer is “never”. At least as far as the media is concerned.

That’s not to say that getting Big Chief Rotten Liver out of the WH isn;t a good thing in and of itself: but I can still discern several clouds in this silver lining:

1. Bannon is leaving: he’s not being perp-walked out to jail in handcuffs. And leaving for an “influential” position as well.

2. He may be out of his White House office, but we still have no idea how much influence he may still have on the Administration or its remaining staff (if “fired” for “disloyalty”, probably zero, but we will have to wait and see).

3. (To me, worst of all) As Charles points out in #3 above, Bannon’s departure is one of those rare golden opportunities for the Administration to try to spin ANY positive news for itself out of the dysfunctional shitshow it’s become. And it will probably succeed. CoS Kelly will likely take the lead in trying to present this as that long-awaited “Presidential pivot”: and, disgustingly, the “MSM” is likely to eat it up with glee, and pour out reams of paper/hours of airtime/terabytes of pixels about how we “finally have a professional WH” and how the “alt-right” influence has been banished (we don’t and it hasn’t, not by a long shot), and that the country can finally breathe a little easier.

The last is a bit of truly foolish advice, since the biggest problem in the Administration is that Donald Trump is President: he could have the wisest people in the world as WH advisors, and it wouldn’t make the least difference in his fundamental incompetence and incapacity: but that’s an issue which, sadly, is going to put off for another day.

One positive, though: I’m sure any good press generated by booting Bannon will be dissipated by Trump’s next gaffe: and we probably won;t have to wait long for that….

Oh, this is definitely Kabuki theatre.

But does a 70-year-old man, with the mentality of a toddler and a lifetime of acting horribly towards others really listen to any advice, or does he just impulsively do what he’s always done?

Bannon, at least how I saw it, was more or less there to help sell Trump and his existing beliefs and policies to the nutjobs and white supremacists. Gorka and Nazi Miller will continue to do the same, and when they get thrown out, someone else equally as bad will assume that role.

o Suspect shot by police after 3 minutes of his first stabbing (note: Finnish police are even more restrictive than their Swedish counterparts re: weapons use).
o 2 dead, 6 injured.
o Suspect more than likely faces a real life sentence as he killed someone who acted in defence of others (attacking good Samaritans, DO NOT do it in Finland).
o Passers-by from first crime scene immediately gave chase. Rumor is he had a number of people chasing him.

I am flying out on Saturday, arriving about noon. Hotel is near the train system that comes from the airport, so I’ll probably be “settled in” close to 3:00. So I have Saturday evening (not too late) and all day Sunday.

That’s great! Both Denver and Boulder are a lot of fun in the summer. If you are from sea level, I would recommend you don’t overschedule yourself. You are likely to feel tired and out of breath easily because of the altitude. And drink water - it’s dry here and altitude plus dehydration equals the headache from hell.

Estes Park is fun - it is definitely a tourist trap, but it is right up against Rocky Mountain National Park so you could go wander around a bit and then head back to town for a cool drink and a rest. Wear layers - storms can blow up any time.

If you want to stay in town, here is one list of activities:

While this is all entertaining as hell, and it is, and while it’s even more entertaining to speculate what vengeance Bannon and his army of angry gnomes could wreak on this presidency*, I am not going to be turning handsprings along the Charles over this development. First, it’s eight months overdue and both Stephen Miller and the ridiculous Dr. Sebastian Gorka, Ph.D. are still there. Second, I decline at the moment to believe that Bannon will be blocked entirely on the president*’s cell phone. And third, given that this is a president* who would require his paper boy to sign a non-disclosure agreement, I think it’s reasonable to speculate that Bannon’s silence will be handsomely remunerated. But there’s one more general reason that I am not popping corks over this…

I have to think that the various corporate sublets in the Republican congressional leadership—Paul Ryan, chief among them—are looking at Bannon’s departure as an opportunity to lead a president* who knows nothing about anything right down the trail of corporate oligarchy. I’m glad he’s gone, but there’s still enough left to concern us all.

Local wingnuts are having a serious meltdown over this. if there were a Six Flags over Poland, would these people insist that it fly the swastika?
Six Flags Over Texas takes down Confederate flag

ARLINGTON, Texas - Six Flags Over Texas has changed its mind and has taken down the Confederate States of America flag at the park in Arlington.

“At Six Flags Over Texas we strive every single day to make people happy and to create a fun, thrilling and safe family friendly experience for our guests. We always choose to focus on celebrating the things that unite us versus those that divide us. As such, we have changed the flag displays in our park to feature American flags,” park officials said in a statement.

The announcement comes after Six Flags initially said it would continue to fly the Confederate flag despite uproar after clashes in Charlottesville.

Written by otherwise shit-eating GOP weasel Michael Gerson (the guy who came up with the “mushroom cloud will be the smoking gun” metaphor to justify the invasion of Iraq), the piece basically calls out anyone in the GOP who still stands next to Trump as an enabler.

Which is something we’ve been saying over on the left for, oh, the last year and a half. But it’s bracing to see a GOP apparatchik making the same case.

Maybe. Ben Shapiro’s take is this (he was on MSNBC when I was in the car)…

Bannon has as big an ego as Trump.

He sees Trump as a globalist who is not doing the very right wing things he promised.

He sees himself running in 2020.

He is as full of himself as Trump but smarter.

If Trump doesn’t fulfill his right-wing promises, Bannon (who is returning to Breitbart) will slam Trump up and down and get his base to turn on Trump.

That left wing or moderate writers/stations will have Bannon on just so he can trash trump (eventually helping Bannon in the process).

I hope the last one is bullshit, but these days, who knows.

Six Flags Over Texas takes down Confederate flag

Six Flags incorporates theme areas for each flag. When it opened in 1961 (during the Civil War Centennial) the Confederacy area featured a re-enactment of the execution of a Yankee spy. This area area is now combined with France as “France and the Old South” and the executions have long since been dropped.

As long as you define “extremism” as “anything the Russian government doesn’t like”, which is also their definition of “fascism”. While the Kremlin has been funding every right wing nationalist organization in Europe (except Ukrainian Praviy Sektor), having the fucking Nazis on a .ru site was getting a little too obvious.

Using that to attack the party now especially given that Democratic Party officials unlike officials in another party have pretty much all condemned the CSA and what it stood for. These white supremacists all think that their genetic lines are pure blood white, and imagine the look of shock and fear when they’re not nearly as pure blood as they and their fellow white supremacists think they are.

So what do they do? They argue the tests they took are invalid, inaccurate, or claim that their geneologies are air tight.

What also happens is that in the pure blood mania of these white supremacist groups, those who reveal their results get slammed by those who have less genetic diversity or they’re shamed into hiding or explaining away their results. Longstanding members of these terror groups will get a pass (because of course they will, the same way the Nazis gave Hitler a pass despite having none of the characteristics of their prototypical Nazi - blue, blue eyed, tall, muscular, etc.)

No one is “pure.” It’s why I stopped calling myself white and instead an American of European descent because that’s what I am. I’m not “pure” in the slightest and I’m damn proud of that.

Charlottesville: Canadians Who Attended White Supremacist Rally Identified

At least two Quebec men have been identified after they travelled south to participate in a white supremacist rally last week in Charlottesville, Va.

One of them took to Facebook to express his anger after an anti-fascist group posted a screen capture from the event that showed his face and that of four other men.

“In Canada, hurting people’s feelings is basically illegal,” one man told white nationalist Christopher Cantwell in a VICE News documentary from Charlottesville, Va.
“These people are idiots who drive forward the globalist media narrative to silence anyone who is right of centre,” Shawn Beauvais-MacDonald wrote on his Facebook page.

It’s not. I taught American history for years, and I always laid out the causes of the Civil War, including slavery. The GA State BOE requires that that information is taught in all of its public high schools. Southerners who attended public schools and paid attention in American history class know slavery was the primary cause of the CW. Their denial isn’t due to not being exposed to that fact but to their refusal to acknowledge that some of their ancestors did indeed wage a war to keep blacks enslaved and thought it was important enough to rebel against their own government. The states’ rights’ lie as being the #1 cause of the CW is a dodge, a way to maintain the benefits that white supremacy affords citizens in Confederate states and elsewhere. It also absolves them of having to take ownership of the sordid attitudes, cruelty, racism, and anti-democratic sentiments of the and their ancestors. This issue of revering the Confederate flag and those monuments and being willing to die for them will continue on into the future because those who do it will never acknowledge the major reason for secession and the CW was southern states citizens’ and governments thinking that one race of people was superior to another.

To play devils advocate, are you sure that is not just one sticker with the templar cross to go along with the threat to ISIS and the Infidels reference.

The iconography of the various crusader military orders is not very uniform. It’s an easy overlap with an Iron Cross, which probably is related to the Teutonic Knights. Let him explain it to his boss.

The Iron Cross is a German military medal from the 19th Century and, taken alone, may not be considered a hate symbol, according to the ADL. The cross is sometimes used in non-racist contexts in the United States, like by skateboarders.

For sure. It’s the second camp I’ve seen. I may be seeing Auschwitz in a year or two if we stop in Poland when I go with my cousins to visit the Slovak cousins.

I chose not to view those sites when my wife and I went to Poland.

I still have to fight off the occasional wingnut that claims they were “Polish” death camps. They were German camps built on occupied territory to kill Jews from all over Europe, and non-Jewish Poles. They were never Polish death camps.

Exclusive: Stonewall Jackson’s Great-Great-Grandsons Call for Removal of Confederate Monuments

Jackson’s great-great-grandson Warrren Christian:

Where I work, at UNC, there’s a prominent Confederate memorial, monument, statue right in the heart of campus. And since I’ve been at the University of North Carolina, I have wanted for that statue to be removed, and felt like speaking out about it, and now, finally, kind of got the courage to do so.

I think Jack and I, and along with our parents, it’s kind of some mixed feelings, mixed emotions, about being direct descendants of Stonewall Jackson. It’s not something that I, you know, widely share, outside of a very close group of friends. So this is really kind of a coming out, in a sort.

And also, the—I think the other thing is, in some ways, I don’t feel like it should matter too much, you know, how we feel about the statues, but I do understand that it does—it is important to some folks how we feel about it. And, for example, this statue at the University of North Carolina, when it was put up, the speaker, Julian Carr, who is a prominent local businessman, talked a lot about how the Confederate soldiers were working to save the Anglo-Saxon race. And then, really kind of disgustingly, at the end of his speech, he bragged about having the—his quotes—“pleasant duty of horsewhipping a black woman in front of a hundred federal soldiers and leaving her clothes in tatters.” So I think the racist and white supremacist intent of these monuments is clear. And I think it’s past time that they’re all removed from the public squares of our country.

“The rootless transnational elite knows that a tidal wave of white identity is coming. And they know that once the word gets out, they will not be able to stop us,” Fuentes continued. “The fire rises!”

After being outed:

While Fuentes, 18, didn’t release any specific threats, he says “people had been harassing me on Twitter from Boston, telling me to meet me at restaurants down the street from where I lived. It got to a point where I didn’t feel safe.”

Heads up, DecaturDeb—he’s transferring to Auburn.

Oh—and hilariously, he described the camo brigade as wearing duck-hunting outfits. Uh huh.

“The majority of the people who were there were in MAGA hats, duck hunting outfits, and were there to express their concern over the removal of Confederate statues.”

This is the kind of title you get in an essentially flat company with no more than 2-4 layers, but you need to promote someone without actually changing their job in any way. What’s next, SENIOR Executive Chairman?

I honestly wish I could find out more about some of what my DNA results called “trace amounts.” I had 10% of groups that I honestly have no idea where they came from: Iberian, Italian, Middle East, and Central Asian. I’m going to take 23 and Me eventually since it’s said to be more accurate than ancestry.com and detailed.

Happy, I did 23 and Me and was amazed to see 15% of Mom’s DNA came from Native Americans.

So my buddy who is from the Balkans (not Serb, Croat, or Bosnian, but a mix from north of Serbia) and I had a discussion about the state of Europe and he feels pessimistic that the far-right will continue to strengthen in the years ahead and eventually take over Western Europe. I disagreed because even in the end I feel that civil society will push back and reassert its dominance over the fringe elements. But he disagreed and here’s what he told me:

I don’t think so man, we always like to think of ourselves as a civil society
But we arent
Humans suffer a big problem
Fear
And mob mentality
The fear of Islam and attack on their “culture” will drive these ****s
On a slight tangent
They talk about celebrating European culture
The fuck
Why do they only celebrate the hate shit
Make some pyrogies or food
Throw some traditional festival damn ****s
European heritage isn’t just oppression and murder
Granted there was a lot of it
But that’s all these guys think

Some deep self-introspection there.

They CHOSE to stick with the ugliness they knew existed in the GOP. Why do I know this? Observation and research. Because whether they gave voice to it in public or not, they believed every bit of it in their black hearts and threw a thick coat of shellac over it that they called “c”hristianity to justify and legitimize it. They’re allegedly experiencing public angst over what they’re witnessing happen to their party since January 20, 2017, but that’s another layer of shellac they’re applying in an effort to claim that they never knew their party was infested with Islamophobes, homophobes, misogynists, racists, Nazis, anti-Semites, and conspiracy freaks. I’m not convinced by the act they’re rolling out. My position on right vs. wrong is that if I’m associated with a group of persons and I discover they’re engaged in wrong-doing and abusing any of my fellow citizens, I’m outta there. They’ve been seeing the same rot that the rest of us have been seeing in the GOP, yet, they CHOSE to stay. If anyone thinks they stuck with the GOP because of its positions on abortion, LGBTQ Americans, Muslims, and/or government spending to assist our citizens who are struggling due to their economic circumstances, s/he has serious problems facing the fact that the GOP has promoted evil centered on punishing some of its fellow citizens for decades. I’m an observer of persons, and in my 60+ years of life, I’ve watched GOPers openly share their anti-democratic and anti-American opinions and positions about some of their fellow citizens. I have no problem with a company denying web hosting, I am a little less ok with denying domain registration or ISP services. There has been debate about whether ISPs should be treated as Utilities or not, and I have gone back and forth on that. If you do treat them as utilities then it is a little bit analogous to denying someone phone service because they were running a neo-nazi phone bank.

I am still trying to figure out where I fall on this, but I think I am leaning towards a split the baby approach, where as long as they pay their bills they can have the internet pipe and domain registration, but nobody would be required to grant them any sort of hosting and they would have to buy and maintain any servers and equipment necessary to host their own website including any anti-DDoS appliances etc. and the in house expertise to maintain and protect said systems.

The only right Nazis have is to say their shit without fear of imprisonment. That’s free speech. We have every right to make them social pariahs in our society.

Our concepts of free speech differ (and it’s OK). I’m for fining and/or jailing anyone propagating neo-Nazi views.

I am just sick of the poor widdle Nazi narrative. Fucking Spencer openly wishes for genocide and wishes violence on his opponents but he gets a taste of his own meds and berated at a gym and we’re supposed to feel sorry for him. I’ll support Spencer’s right not to be imprisoned for his twisted beliefs but I will enver support his fcked up worldview being normalized.

re: #530 Blind Frog Belly White

Well, I’d say 90-95% MIA. There were folks like David Farenthold, Daniel Dale, Kurt Eichenwald, and others.

I think what we’re seeing now is that the media are no longer afraid of him. Whether that’s the higher ups at Corporate seeing more money to be made NOT sucking up, or the journalists themselves sensing the blood in the water, I don’t know. Maybe both.

It’s also worth noting that nobody in America could have missed things like the Access Hollywood tape, or Judge Curiel Week, or attacking the Khans. What I’ve seen journalists say is, “We covered it. People didn’t pay attention.”

The coverage (which lasted until the next email leak) was drowned by the Clinton hate - day after day after day. The Hollywood tape should have stopped the trump campaign forever - but other than get Billy Bush fired it proved that nothing would stop the liar in chief. Bill Clinton had to defend impeachment for so much less.

Aren’t these the same people who tell us that it should be acceptable for businesses to deny service to gay people? So tell me concern trolls, why are Nazis a slippery slope but your “deeply held religious beliefs” for gay people who didn’t do anything except be of the wrong sexual orientation to you are acceptable.

Really, it’s still legal to fire people for being gay in this country. I’m supposed to be outraged that a company doesn’t want open Nazis and white supremacists working for them?!?!?! It’s pathetic.

Yeah I kept up too. The other thing was I had little downtime. By the way, don’t know if you’ve gone to Belgium but I’d recommend it. Nice country. I thought the Belgians were the nicest people of the Germans, Dutch, and themselves. My brother got a bit annoyed with me checking out since I was making small talk with the receptionist when we had a train to catch to the airport.

Conservatives supported ruining people’s lives for associating with Communists and communism when we were allied with communists against the Nazis. But oh no, some Nazi white supremacist can’t handle social ostracization and it’s an attack on free right.

The Hollywood tape should have stopped the trump campaign forever - but other than get Billy Bush fired it proved that nothing would stop the liar in chief. Bill Clinton had to defend impeachment for so much less.

Attempts by the Clinton campaign to define her campaign on competence, experience, and policy positions were drowned out by coverage of alleged improprieties associated with the Clinton Foundation and emails. Coverage of Trump associated with immigration, jobs, and trade was greater than that on his personal scandals.

Still ticks me off that I can’t spring the 7 yr old from school. They’re going to sit in class in a 85% zone watching the eclipse on TV. Reminds me of Bradbury’s All Summer In A Day, which is basically a horror story.

If it’s an old-style CRT type, you might be able to get a doctor’s note. (X-ray exposure) And if you can’t get credible assurances from the school that *none* of their TVs use CRTs …doctor’s note. :)
