I’ve had it with the religious shenanigans in government. We atheists can call down the wrath of Katie Mack and Neil DeGrasse Tyson if need be.

The theocrats leave me no choice but force them to submit to the power of science. Verily I say unto the theocrats that I will call on the awesome power of Katie and Neil (I’d like to think we’re on a first-name basis) to blot out the sun in fourteen states on Monday.

Don’t think I won’t do it. See the Sun erased and tremble in fear.

One of the small local papers ran this story about trying to combat nazi metal music in the Twin Cities. It focuses on a guy who’s company sells nazi music and other goods.

The man behind the site is Aaron Wayne Davis. In photos posted on social media, but which have since been taken down, he appears as a broad-shouldered, powerlifting tank of a man. A black sun tattoo, fashionable among white supremacists, covers an enormous bicep. Judging from his shirts, he’s a fan of Bound for Glory, an old St. Paul band known for its point-blank screams of “White Power!” as well as the infamous Antichrist Kramer, pseudonymous publisher of copious racist bands.

By day, Davis is a partner in the intellectual-property firm Patterson Thuente, which is quartered in the IDS tower in downtown Minneapolis. His professional biography presents him in power suit and tie, with a confident smile. He is a decorated litigator with an expansive client list, including Ashley Furniture and Cardiac Science, whom he represents on such issues as patent infringement.

Nothing pisses me off more than Nikki Haley getting all the credit and kudos for the aftermath of the Mother Emmanuel murders and the removal of the confederate flag:

Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, said the “horrible acts” seen in Charlottesville “took me back to sad days dealing with the Charleston tragedy in 2015.”

It was Charleston Mayor Riley who “dealt with the Charleston tragedy,” you horrible lying woman.

Haley attracted national attention when she secured the removal of the Confederate battle flag from South Carolina’s capitol grounds after a white supremacist killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston.

The fire started about 20 miles NW from here in Brookings, in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness and it may advance to about 8 miles from here in the next 24 hours. The fire has been confined to Federal lands up to this point but once it hits Loeb State Park (just west of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness), it is heading into populated areas. The Curry County Sheriff’s department has issued a mandatory evacuation for everyone between the fire and Loeb State Park with the possibility of more evacuations to follow.

We live in town and are about 400 feet from the Pacific Ocean and just north of the mouth of the Chetco River. The smoke has rolled down the river valley and is spreading north and south with the winds. This AM it was dark orange out (the cats were freaked out) so I told my wife that Trump is turning everything orange…lol! While it is raining ash and everything is covered with it, the smoke has been minimal here with the barest onshore breeze keeping it at bay for now.

I have to roll and go save my wife from work but before I go, let me just say that I never thought I would see the day that a President of ours would side with NAZIs over Americans.

Fuck that NAZI-loving asshole.

re: #24 Unshaken Defiance

When Kim Jong-il died, everyone kept pointing out the number of North Koreans who had to fake their grief over the passing of their “Dear Leader.” I saw the fakes, too, but that didn’t disturb me at all.

What really disturbed me were the people that I saw in North Korea that weren’t faking their grief. There were quite a few people, people that had been forced to eat nothing but grass, mind you, people who had family members taken from them by the very “Dear Leader” they were mourning that were showing such geniune and deeply emotional sadness at the loss of the man that it was obviously not fake.

That kind of blind devotion I found to be more scary than all the people who were faking it. Faking it made sence to me. Feeling actual loss for the monster was disturbing.

I see a bit of that cult of personality in the followers of Donald Trump right here, right now.

I wanted to comment on UpChuck’s unhinged Facebook post where he once again slanders and threatens to sue our humble host.

It’s like lying comes reflexively with these demons. UpChuck has been doing it for years, calling Charles “the lesser Charles Johnson” and accusing him of being homosexual (so what? I thought UpChuck knew a bunch of gay people from his time living in West Hollywood while he was attending Claremont McKenna College), mentally ill (speak for yourself UpChuck, you sociopathic fuckstick) and possibly a pedophile (hey UpChuck, be glad the better Charles Johnson hasn’t gone after you for this, you fuckin’ momo).

Oh, and he says he has a bunch of Jewish friends? That’s like a white guy in suburban Shreveport saying he has a bunch of black friends, which is a total crock of shit.

Hey all, remember that whenever UpChuck get mentioned at LGF he obsessively reads the comments here, so feel free to call him a fat fuck ginger tub of lard, he’ll probably see it.

I really enjoyed that movie. Tom Hardy did a good job as usual.

Video games haven’t translated well to film for various reasons. Whether it was any of the following: Bad writing, bad directors, bad source material resulting in no plot to begin with, inadequate funding, etc.

Now, I would like to see one of the following game universes made into a movie: Deus Ex, System Shock, BioShock.

Granted, they really are all the same type of game, but at least there’s something there to work with. Mass Effect would also work.

160
Targetpractice  Aug 19, 2017 • 2:02:19am

Think a lot of the problem with live-action adaptations of video games these days is that the games themselves are practically films already. And I don’t just mean the Kojima-style “hours long stretch of exposition masquerading as gameplay,” but also games like Mass Effect where so the lore itself is so dense that it has its own section in the game just so you can sit and read it. Either you have to dumb it down for the non-fans, which leaves the fans feeling like idiots. Or you play to the fans and leave the non-fans completely missing much of the plot.

That’s a valid point. Kind of like what I mentioned with Evangelion earlier. It’s this balance that needs to be kept between the fans and new-comers that makes things hard.

With the advent of streaming services, perhaps games like Mass Effect or say the Deus Ex universe should just be turned into a series.

I believe the Wheel of Time books are looking for a home somewhere on a streaming service.

Don’t forget the DnD movies.

The first was just bad but the made for TV sequel had it’s moments - classic party, practically saying “hi I’m a 10th level fighter/magic user!” “I’m a 12th level thief!” And so on. The fights, especially against the white dragon, were quite DnD-ish as well. Fun in a “hey it’s a paycheck and we’re all nerds” kind of way.

Targetpractice  Aug 19, 2017 • 2:15:05am

Another part of the problem is a lot of the more popular games these days are RPGs or involve silent protagonists so the character can see him/herself in their shoes. You have people who will literally spend hours in the character creator screens getting their Shepard or Lone Survivor to look as much like them as possible…or just make them look like an anime character. So no matter how you write the character, you’re gonna disappoint somebody because that’s not the character they connect with.

It’s like, I’m against anti-Holocaust-denial laws because I feel that a state controlling the historical discourse is, on balance, more dangerous.

But I do feel that propaganda *does* work, so those striving for an ethnic/racial strife should be punished.

Certainly in Europe. I used to feel that the 1st Amdt. should stay as it is in the US. Now? Not so much.

(And again, I fully respect - and understand - the opinions of those who disagree on this point.)

First thing to establish is that there is no such thing as an absolute free speech anywhere. Defamation, lying under oath, kiddie porn, shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater, divulging state secrets, you name it. There are always some limits. The question is only what those limits should be. And yes, we still call it “free speech” despite the limits.

It is my opinion that neo-Nazi propaganda falls under the “shouthing Fire!” category.

I also had the once perhaps naive view of if you allow Holocaust Denial, it will show how absurd denial is but that hasn’t really been the case. CCJ is a year younger than I am and no doubt we had similar curriculum in school but whereas I have no doubt in my mind that the Holocaust not only happened but a lot of its horrors were minimized (Germany only recently acknowledged the gay and common criminal victims of the Holocaust), he’s spouting out that shit that you see.

It reached an absurd point when a city official in Stuttgart banned anti-Nazi flyers and T-shirts because they bore a swastika, and the law stated that the swastikas were outlawed.

So the law had to be amended to made it clear that the Swastika can be displayed in a clearly historical or anti-fascist context.

I believe that the kind of the thing we’re doing at our blog is cutting-edge when it comes to debunking the denial. The historians don’t usually bother - for a good reason - but the denial arguments don’t go away and some real research is sometimes needed to conclusively debunk them. As an example, here’s my buddy Hans’ debunking of the deniers on the existence of the gas vans. He had to go to an archive to address all the points, though in the end he’s left nothing of the denier arguments on this issue, and he’s not even a historian, which tends to buttress my point about a commission of actual historians debunking those arguments - it is absolutely doable; the whole of denial could be comprehensively debunked by about 30 experts or so in a matter of months.

However it should be kept in mind that not everything shown in early documentaries is the “unvarnished truth”. The Allies believed in some things that turned out to be exaggerated or legendary afterwards (like Ilse Koch’s “lampshades”). This is something that the deniers use to some effect nowadays. To get the comprehensive picture of the concentration camps I would recommend Nikolaus Wachsmann’s book KL, a great historiographic achievement.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s back out on the golf course this morning in yet another emoluments clause violation, and that is the least bad thing he’s done today.

Everything Trump says and does in his position turns to shit. Every last thing. He’s knowingly pushed white supremacists into the highest levels of the admin, and people cheer when one is sent sideways back to Breitbart? Bannon’s still pushing a white supremacist agenda, and he’s going to give Trump cover from the outside.

Trump remains surrounded by bigots and regressive know-nothings, because that’s what Trump wants to hear/see.

The Bannon departure is an attempt to cover for the white supremacists who still lurk throughout the admin and the fact Trump willingly goes out of his way to equate Nazis/white supremacists/KKK with those who stand in opposition. His presser was an unforced admission of Trump’s true beliefs. Bannon didn’t force him to say those things. Gorka didn’t. Miller didn’t. That was all Trump. That’s who he is. That’s who he always was.

And the ongoing kerfuffle over the statues deflects from the fact the white supremacists - the KKK and Nazis - are emboldened by this admin and this president precisely because Trump condones those actions and equates the opposition with the actual fucking Nazis.

So, while it’s good that the Confederate statues come down, that’s less important than pushing back against the living-breathing-rioting actual Nazis. And that pushback starts with fighting Trump and the GOP that enables him.

Hey, Nines, going OT here:

A while back I posted a question about buying a new amp. I have a 30-year-old Hughes and Kettner 30W combo. I was wondering if it has a loose ground wire. as the amp seems to buzz when it’s plugged in, regardless of what you’re doing. You were questioning whether it was a ground wire at all.

I’m pretty sure it’s the amp. I’m going to check again, but I’ve swapped out cables in the past and the buzz remained. I’ve also plugged the guitar into both GarageBand and a video game/tutoring software called Rocksmith on the computer, and there’s no buzz there.

I was wondering if it was worth trying to get this thing fixed, or just dump it and get a new amp. I’ve had my on this deal at Monoprice that seems to get decent reviews: 40w combo for $70.

Thoughts? Any help is appreciated.

This.

I was looking up videos for REM last week and stumbled across Micheal Stipe and Mike Mills giving an interview on British TV, promoting the 25th anniversary re-release of Out of Time (great album).

The subject turned to the just-completed US election. Stipe (a Bernie supporter) went out of his way to insist that Trump was not elected due to his unapologetic ass-kissing of every bigot in the US, and that it was simply people wanting to change the “status quo”.

I admire Stipe. I’ve literally been a fan of the band for 33 years, since high school. I’ve seen them three times live. 2008’s Accelerate is a criminally-underated album.

That said, it was really sad to see him basically try to justify his Bernie-ness by insisting that there was no bigotry driving a huge chunk of Trump’s voting base. I really hope Stipe can look at Charlottesville and have the honesty to realize he was wrong.

You’re absolutely right. People like Bannon looked at Trump’s scattershot ignorance and refined it to the point that it put them all in the White House. Bannon was Trump’s white supremacist training wheels.

So a wingnut friend posted the stupid meme telling leftists to shut up because of the composition of the votes on the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. First off, it’s great that the Republicans not only voted for that legislation but spearheaded its passage. I love Lincoln for that. Secondly, stop acting like the two political parties are vaccums and unchanged from they were 150 years ago, and thirdly, a lot of Republicans today have a problem with the 14th amendment and its application.

So many white people in this country were fine with the idea of the Welfare State until LBJ had the nerve to say that black people and others should share in it as well. That to me is the greatest fraud that modern conservatism has presented itself on to the country and as a result we have a lot of delusional douches who think this country was a purely capitalist economy until the “leftists ruined it.”

I just don’t get him man. Has a problem with athletes and people who don’t stand for the national anthem (He’s a USMC vet) but seems ot have no problem with those statues, Exactly though, if you firmly believe the Democratic Party to be responsilbe for the Civil War, why aren’t you in agreement with the counter-protesters? Oh wait, the whole using the political parties of 150 years ago is just a cheap attempt to insult the intelligence of their political opponents. People know that Lincoln was a Republican. Many others including us know that the GOP has been more like George Lincoln Rockwell’s party these past years than Abe’s party. Abe not only condemned slavery but also know-nothingism.

In fact, I know they did but I also know my ancestors never had to worry about being murdered if they so much as looked at a person wrong in this country. That’s the legacy of Jim Crow. Black people having to live in constant fear and egg shells of offending so bigoted asshole who thinks he could call you boy and not your name but if you so much as didn’t call him sir, he would kill you.

re: #274 Mattand

Hello Mattand. If I recall, it’s a solid state amp. No tubes. I think I said it could be any number of things, and I don’t recall if I suggested changing out the power cord. If you haven’t done that, give it a go. Any service on it will exceed the worth I think. Did you do a search for that model and see what it’s going for on ebay and such? Might be a throwaway or a 5 buck pawn dump.
I’m a tube guy but that’s me. There are thousands of nice enough SS amps for your needs. Personally I would not do that amp you have posted. No real brand name on it.
My suggestion.
Has some effects (with levels) and voicing (amp modeling). You can phone up Musician Fiend and Sweetwater and see if you can play them off one another and get a few bucks off. The big box bullies have the best pricing on these.
So my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

I still think Eisenhower had the right idea as soon as the Western Allies discovered the first camps they found. Record this. Record it because people will deny it.

Back when I was in the 8th grade (Catholic School) the nun that taught us history had a classmate’s uncle who was one of the first American GIs into a German prison camp come and give a lecture to all of us.

He had a photo book with probably 50 5 x 7 photos of what they found. These were actual black and white images shot by a military photographer for record sake. I am not sure how he had these photos, but he did.

They were grim. Some of the students only looked at a few images and turned away.

Some of us couldn’t believe what we were seeing even though we had heard about it.

Those images never left my memory. Hearing any amount of denial is sickening. Fighting over the numbers is gross. Humans can be sick animals. We seem to have a lot of them again. They need to be resisted at every turn.

Anymouse 🌹  Aug 19, 2017 • 8:52:09am

Internet service just restored to my village after it went off yesterday.

Just got back from the special budget meeting for the village library. Aside from the previously-set 2% increase, I helped finagle through an additional 3.5%, plus a capital improvement budget to replace two more library computers.

Discussion then turned to the eclipse - specifically, road problems. Yesterday, the state governor ordered all non-numbered north-south roads between US-20 and US-26 closed, due to scores of out-of-staters getting lost and stranded on our Third World road system and not having any cell service here to call for help. (Ranchers and farmers volunteered to search the roads to find stranded eclipse-chasers and rescue them.)

Only people who live in the area may travel past the barricades (meaning my village is cut off). While most barricades are just across roads, here they are manned because the state governor is just north of town staying at a ranch for the eclipse. That means showing ID to get in to town (or go to the cemetery or water tower).

A Christian who wants a Christian theocracy has no real business being in the US.

A Muslim who wants a Muslim theocracy has no real business being in the US.

Christians and Muslims who don’t want a theocracy both belong in the US.

Edited to add: An atheist who wants to suppress one (or all) religion(s) has no real business being in the US.

I don’t completely agree with your ETA statement. For example, Scientology is now officially classified as a religion in this country. This is not a religion; it is a fraudulent cult. Is the Westboro Baptist Church a religion? Just because some group calls itself a religion doesn’t it make it so.

Our first phone number only had 4 digits for local calls (some in the town were only 3 digits.) When they added the exchange (SUnset 4), it was quite a change.

My phone number growing up in Michigan was 1-2 (one long ring, two short rings). It was quite a shock to many people in my town when we got four-digit direct dial to anyone in town, and long distance dial (though an operator would come on and ask for our billing number).

Here, it was a similar shock to people when we got 911 emergency service. Everyone was distributed a card by the county saying “post this by your phone” (though I still have all the direct dial numbers next to mine).

It seems to fit large groups that are passionate believers in something.

Love that the racist illustrates his crapola with a pic (a 19th-Century Romantic imagination, by the look of it) of the Athenian Acropolis. Guess he doesn’t recall that the people who built that complex would have looked down in scorn at his “European” ancestors as a gang of uncouth barbarians for whom the term “culture” was wildly inapplicable.

And I’m sure if they met Mr. “Consciousness”, they’d assume their judgements were correct.

Oh, that’s right. What “they” want is to preserve their right to go out and call themselves superior to all others and then to go and turn that “pride” into pure hate.

re: #326 Unshaken Defiance

Huh. Seems a bit much given GPS still works, and just turning around would be an option just like before cell phones. But locals probably know best.

While a GPS device receives satellite signals, the maps included in them do not include our road network (thus a GPS device will just show you out in the middle of a field or something). Additionally, on-line and print maps do not show roads in the Nebraska Panhandle. For example, Google Maps only shows roads (and not all of them) if you zoom in to the highest resolution.

Google Street View only shows US-26 through the village (meaning privacy for us). No other roads here are available on Street View.

And if something happens to your car, you’re screwed unless someone comes along on one of the farm roads (the aforementioned lack of cell service). (This is also a problem when tornado-tourist-chasers come round these parts. After every severe thunderstorm in the spring and summer farmers and ranchers will take to the roads in tractors to pull cars to safety, because they don’t have sense to listen to rural hicks telling them don’t go out in the rain or go on the county roads without a map, compass, and Sherpa.)

For local travel I have a section-level gazetteer showing all the cow paths.

I’ll note that early white supremacists didn’t talk about the supremacy of white people but rather of Anglo Saxon Protestants. It’s like Czech neo-Nazis. I’ve encountered one, many years ago. He was also quite proud of the fact that he was “100% Czech” (as he put it) and an adherent of the National Socialist ideology.

Yep………just look at the words of Heinrich Himmler:

One basic principle must be the absolute rule for the SS men: We must be honest, decent, loyal and comradely to members of our own blood and to nobody else. What happens to a Russian, to a Czech, does not interest me in the slightest. What other nations can offer in the way of good blood of our type, we will take, if necessary, by kidnapping their children and raising them here with us. Whether nations live in prosperity or starve to death interests me only so far as we need them as slaves for our culture; otherwise, it is of no interest to me. Whether 10,000 Russian females fall down from exhaustion while digging an antitank ditch interests me only insofar as the anti-tank ditch for Germany is finished.

I am now referring to the evacuation of the Jews, the extermination of the Jewish people. It’s one of those things that is easily said: ‘The Jewish people are being exterminated’, says every party member, ‘this is very obvious, it’s in our program, elimination of the Jews, extermination, we’re doing it, hah, a small matter.’ And then they turn up, the upstanding 80 million Germans, and each one has his decent Jew. They say the others are all swines, but this particular one is a splendid Jew. But none has observed it, endured it. Most of you here know what it means when 100 corpses lie next to each other, when there are 500 or when there are 1,000. To have endured this and at the same time to have remained a decent person — with exceptions due to human weaknesses — has made us tough, and is a glorious chapter that has not and will not be spoken of. Because we know how difficult it would be for us if we still had Jews as secret saboteurs, agitators and rabble-rousers in every city, what with the bombings, with the burden and with the hardships of the war. If the Jews were still part of the German nation, we would most likely arrive now at the state we were at in 1916 and 17

Clinical, cold and horrific.

Though I doubt any of those clowns can achieve the sheer level of clinical detachment that Himmler reached in this speech from 24 May 1944:

Another question which was decisive for the inner security of the Reich and Europe, was the Jewish question. It was uncompromisingly solved after orders and rational recognition. I believe, gentleman, that you know me well enough to know that I am not a bloodthirsty person; I am not a man who takes pleasure or joy when something rough must be done. However on the other hand, I have such good nerves and such a developed sense of duty - I can say that much for myself - that when I recognise something as necessary I can implement it without compromise. I have not considered myself entitled - this concerns especially the Jewish women and children - to allow the children to grow into the avengers who will then murder our children and our grandchildren. That would have been cowardly. Consequently the question was uncompromisingly resolved.

One cold motherfucker, to say the least. And he really did look like a mild-mannered chicken farmer or a middle-school algebra teacher.

It’s always projection with conservatives, isn’t it? In my nearly sixty years I have never seen anything but projection (and calling liberals “anti-American”).

I look it as they got “out-free-speeched.”

They want to go to a public place and put on their stupid demonstration and be untouchable. It doesn’t work that way.

You got your permit. You had your demonstration. Too bad you were vastly outnumbered and felt threatened. Them’s the brakes snowflakes.

The other side was practicing their rights too.

Now go home and cry that you were shut down…but realize you don’t have the power to overcome the majority. Be thankful you didn’t get your asses beat.

Morning Lizards. Went to see In This Corner of the World last night, which is a animated film from Japan based on a slice of life manga about a woman from Hiroshima who gets married and moves in with her husband’s family during World War II. It goes through the end of the war, including the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

I really recommend it, if it’s showing near you. (It’s got a rather limited US release.) We saw it because mr. klys had read the manga, but it was a good film even without that (although it did help to be able to ask him about this character or that afterwards, because there are a few side characters who are harder to keep track of). A reminder that a lot of the people involved are just humans and trying to live their lives, and what the cost of war is. (The film does not try to justify Japan’s involvement or whitewash the history in any way, if you’re worried about that.)

Anyway, worth catching if you can. (Added bonus, there were no movie previews at the theater we saw it at. That was a first. The movie actually started on time!)

[Seriously, your timeline is so full of rage I feel dirty after reading it. You need help. There’s no shame in it.]

[…]

About 15 years ago, Carl Bell, a psychiatrist at Jackson Park Hospital Family Medicine Clinic and professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s School of Medicine, resurrected Poussaint’s attempt to convince the APA to classify racism as a mental disorder. But Bell tried a different tack from Poussaint. He viewed extreme racism as a type of pathological bias that signaled an underlying personality disorder.

Bell proposed adding pathological bias to the DSM as a trait of personality disorder. With that addition, extreme bigotry would be a major criterion for the diagnosis. The broad term could also apply to individuals who direct violence and hatred toward other groups, such as gays or women.

But again, the APA said no. “When I raised this issue for the personality disorders working group they shut me down,” says Bell, “they were like, ‘Hell, no.’” As in decades past, the APA justified their objection on the grounds that racism is and always has been entrenched in society. [Emphasis added.]

In a way it’s just not relevant. A government that steps beyond the pale like slavery or genocide can and should be wiped from the face of the earth. The only history we need is of a cautionary and educational nature. We can discard the good with the bad. Waves or rose tinted nostalgia come and go. That most basic morality is static. No slaves no genocide. The good in a people can re emerge with time. Germany is a fine example.

Love to meet the guy that argues that is asking too much. Let me illustrate with an example of the sentiment of the day.

What we call the civil rights act was only necessary because the real implications of that civil war loss were not carried through society or culture. From a certain modern viewpoint-Legally the civil rights act was already in the constitution, no man ever had the right to own another. All citizens of age to vote, travel, work, bank, own property. We spent 200+ and counting years applying these lessons to our own. Still not there.

re: #274 Mattand

First what kind of pickups do you use? If you have single pole, like the P90’s on my Casino Coupe, they will be noisier. Humbuckers were designed to defeat this noise in the first place.

Second, do you have compact florescent lighting? Huge noise source.

Third, have you had your home wiring tested? That’s more likely where the grounding issue is than within your amp itself.

Last, check out VHT if you do want to try a different amp. A bit more expensive but cheap for hand wired tube amps.

Good luck.

Having just been in Germany, I love how they handle their history. German cities are filled with what are called documentation centers. They don’t beat around the bush. They tell what happened and don’t make excuses for it. I also think I heard that every German school child is required to visit three concentration camps by the time they graduate high school. Obviously, we can’t do that but we should defnitely have assignments in school that show the human face of slavery, Jim Crow, etc.

The only history we need is of a cautionary and educational nature. We can discard the good with the bad. Waves or rose tinted nostalgia come and go. That most basic morality is static. No slaves no genocide. The good in a people can re emerge with time. Germany is a fine example.

Doesn’t this basically describe almost every government that existed before the 20th century?

Who initiated the rebrand of anarchists to “antifa?”

We should all be antifa, cause we’re all anti-fascist. That’s what really peturbs me about that term.

Maybe their version of ‘re-branding” as is being attempted by the “alt-right” ?

With some things the name just sticks. Antifa is the street movement not averse to violence, and that’s how the term is understood. Thankfully, not all antifascists are antifa.

Now, granted, there are contexts where people could be rather grateful for the antifa. One German Lizard clarified that they were useful in the last days of the East Germany, when the police was unable to do anything about the Nazis. But I do question their value in a society that at least tries to live according to some laws. Otherwise one might just call it a day and go full Mad Max.

re: #440 Charles Johnson

I don’t agree with this “slippery slope” logical fallacy. We’re in this awful mess because nobody stood up and stopped these hate groups.

Political correctness is a problem in this country, but not in the way wingnuts think.

In the last 30 years or so, anti-elitism has resulted in a country where a climate scientist with a PhD saying, “the average world temperature has increased 2 degrees in the last hundred years,” is considered just as valuable to public discourse as your stupid uncle saying, “HURR HURR stupid libtard, it’s snowing! That proves there’s no global warming!”

In the same way, if you call stupid and/or racist people exactly what they are, stupid and/or racist, you’re the one is who gets lectured about “professionalism” and “being mean”.

I have some more thoughts on this but I haven’t had the time to write them up.

Probably the best thing to do, a quick show of force, make sure the Nazis are gone, and then leave so the more radical counter-protesters can’t start shit.

The current polemic approach on the Right is to conflate everyone who is anti-fascist with violent, extremist antifas. And ISIS.

Right. I guess i was trying to say there’s Antifa, the org and anti-f, the principle of being anti-fascist.

So, in addition to paying for all those demonstrators, is George Soros picking up the overtime for all those BPD guys?

Maybe this is the “alt-right”s Fiendish Plan?* To bankrupt old George by having him cough up for massive counter-demonstrations, while the Nazi snowflakes only have to turn out by the few dozens?

* Must be read with proper Boris-and-Natasha accent, i.e. “FEENDISH PLEN”

It was quiet and thoughtful and had spots that made me laugh and spots that made me cry and emphasized the humanity of the people involved. (And I know that’s a tricky subject, because you can have human people who are capable of incredible evil while still being human, but I feel like dehumanization of the other side is a necessary component of that for most people so reminders to see the common is helpful.)

Also I really admired how they handled the atomic bomb, visually.

The art style is charming (less polished than say a Miyasaki film) and, as a fun aside, some of the funding for the movie was done via crowdfunding.

And “Why do you think they called themselves national SOCIALISTS?”

Those arguments have died out to a great extent…

Taxed Enough Already

Which means I hate paying for “them.”

So, there would either be less taxes or more money if “they” were run out of the country.

And the rest of the tax money goes to making White America Great Again and a huge military to keep “them” out and to go kill “them” if and when needed.

Uh, about that bolded part: Slavery was in the Constitution (3/5th Compromise) and Natives weren’t counted as people.

From a certain modern viewpoint-Legally the civil rights act was already in the constitution.
Today, Native Americans, or indigenous people as we say were always people, men as it were.

I was in eastern Germany in 1993. Some folks there were proud of having beaten the Nazis without those niceties extended by westerners to some scientists and other escapees. The pride was being tempered by Stasi info just coming out. My brother was living on a commune in the East. Weird times.

Yes, and history has done it’s job. Not saying we must erase all the way back. I’m saying that everything political and cultural that came in Germany with the Nazis and slaveholding became expendable.

Stuff like this is why I’m not embracing the antifa name, even as I’m willing to push back and fight against the Nazis.

Agree with that. I’m in The Resistance, not Antifa, in part because ‘antifa’ is already in use, defining a specific and more limited scope. I’m fighting current American manifestations of injustice, which includes the Republican party as well as the KKK and the Nazis: the long list of issues that includes institutional racism, gerrymandering, voter suppression, ecologic destruction, protection of public lands, safety regulations, corporate control of elections, aspiring theocracy, and so ad nauseam.

I suppose at a high level it could all be classified under the umbrella of creeping fascism, but I’d rather not get caught up in that semantic nitpick.
