So @jihadijew is kinda known on this blog thanks to VB.

He’s in Orange County CA.

I stumbled onto a tweet from someone protesting there today & saw him in the photo.

This is what we are up to today, 2017, California, fucking Laguna Beach

These are the best people. But I’m cringing that we are now into the non-violent training phase.

They are correct but it’s shocking.

“It is the punishment of the South that its Robert Lees and Jefferson Davises will always be tall, handsome and well-born. That their courage will be physical and not moral. That their leadership will be weak compliance with public opinion and never costly and unswerving revolt for justice and right. it is ridiculous to seek to excuse Robert Lee as the most formidable agency this nation ever raised to make 4 million human beings goods instead of men. Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel-not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”

Stanley, I’m 61 and I still remember what growing up in a Western Pennsylvania steel town was like in the 50’s and 60’s. Before the Civil Rights Act was passed segregation wasn’t just limited to the South. In my home town (Ambridge, PA), there were places that were “Restricted” where certain people could not go. Mainly they were social clubs but there were also stores where they were “discouraged” from entering.

We had a Borough swimming pool that “asked” people of color to stay away. The same applied to several school playgrounds. There was only one playground where kids of color could go.

The Civil Rights Act changed that but our Congressman at the time, Frank Clark, was only one of two Northern Democrats who voted against that act and yes it was because of bigotry.

George Wallace originally ran in the 1964 Democratic primaries against the favorite son candidates standing in for President Johson. Wallace got a significant vote in Maryland, Wisconsin, and Indiana primaries and he got a lot of write-in votes during the Pennsylvania 1964 primary as well. Wallace decided to double down on the hate and his votes expanded in 1968 and 1972. Carter succeeded in neutralizing him in 1976.

re: #15 Joe Bacon 🌹

Jim Wright wrote about his one trip to a George Wallace rally in Michigan (as a school student when public schools in our home state rounded up students to go to Wallace rallies).

Greatness Again

But in the four years between 1968 and 1972 the world had turned. Not much, but enough.

Wallace was still popular in the South and in Michigan and during the first months of the election season he did extremely well and the pundits and prognosticators predicted he would clinch the Democratic nomination easily. But the Vietnam war was winding down and America was coming to grips with the idea that people of color should be viewed as equal citizens - the country wasn’t there yet (still isn’t there yet) but four years had changed things irrevocably. The Democratic Party itself was changing and Wallace was forced by circumstance and changing attitudes to distance himself from segregation and adopt a moderate view of racial relations in America. In fact, so far had the pendulum swung Wallace declared that he’d always been a “moderate” regarding race - despite the irrefutable evidence of history and the more things change, right?

On May 15, 1972, during a rally at a shopping center in Laurel, Maryland, Arthur Bremer shot Wallace five times.

If he can provoke or precipitate some violence that can be pinned on the “alt-left”, then he can come out swinging with his “both sides” arguments and recover some lost ground.

I might call in to one of the yokel radio shows in the morning and warn everyone that the eclipse is God’s judgement on DFW for harboring so many Nazis and Kluxers.
“Why then” they will ask, “will it be more complete farther north?”
I will respond that DFW Nazis are exceptionally stupid and therefore somewhat less of a threat than those smart northern Nazis so we get less darkness for keeping them around.

Whenever Trump speaks, he tumbles and falls and gives more fodder for his “enemies”. There’s no need for any violent protests when Trump does such an excellent job of discrediting Trump through horrible speeches full of self-praise and blustering.

I have a few minutes to post so here goes…

The last word on the Chetco Bar fire here in SW Oregon is that the main fire is 12 miles east of Brookings and extends north to within 6 1/2 miles (east) of Carpenterville. Neighbors traveled up South Bank Chetco Road to the end to check things out for themselves. An officer is stationed near the end by Mt. Emily Road so they turned back but they did not see any flames from that point (would be a view of about 8 miles east of Brookings-Harbor). Some other neighbors did the same thing about two hours later (late this evening) and didn’t see flames either. A friend said that the fire had jumped the Winchuck River but had been beaten down by a fire team that was there. That inland area is S/SW of Brookings, which would be consistent with the fire being 12 miles east of Brookings.

Info is hard to get since InciWeb’s site layout plain sucks and the map is infrequently updated so we have no idea where the fire activity is located, just that it’s growing generally W/SW. That’s why neighbors are making recon runs…lol! Ash was pouring down hard today, winds from the N/NE were 6-12 MPH and gusting to 20, it was smoky and there was no sun at all. None. I hope we get a small break in the AM so we can see our slice of the eclipse! About 9 AM this evening the wind died down and then shifted to a slight onshore breeze, clearing the air and boy did it smell good! I walked outside from making dinner and noticed the barest cool breeze and I could smell the mint and basil in our garden. Sweet!

Forecast is calling for winds from the north tonight but it has been calm or just the barest onshore breeze. In the AM the winds are supposed to shift to come from the N/NE and at about 5-7 MPH, which is not a good direction but at least it is slower that the last couple of days winds. The good news is that later in the afternoon the wind is supposed to shift to come from the west, which would push the fire back into itself. The forecast for the following two days are for west winds too, so we’re a bit hopeful. Winds are supposed to be relatively calm and temps low here on the coast for the next few days, which usually means onshore flow. Either way, in the meantime all we can do is wait and hope for the best.

The bad news is that the fire grew from 31,000 acres early yesterday to 44,000 acres and late this evening it was reported at 70,000 acres now with the Carpenterville area under immediate threat, thus the evac notice for all area north of us. This sucker is nasty! I’ve been tracking this fire since shortly after it started and IMO incompetence has led to this mess. It’s too much to dig into right now but this was once a 1/4 acre fire that could have been put out with a helicopter and a bucket lifting water from the river right next to it but they decided to take a different route with dealing with it by barely dealing with it until it blew up in their faces.

Regarding my 76 year old Trumphumping neighbor I mentioned earlier, I used the weather to open up a conversation about Trump since the last time we talked about him my neighbor wanted Trump to have a “couple of months” to give him a chance. I opened up our conversation with “Man, it’s sure orange out here! It’s like Trump had everything tinted his color!” [/big grin] He laughed a bit and then I asked him “Hey, now that it’s been a couple of months, how do you think Trump is doing?” [/big grin] He responded with “I haven’t been paying attention”, which is an outright lie as I can hear his TV blaring Fox and Hannity every day…lol! I fired back with “Yeah, quite a few Republicans seem to be saying that these days” [/big grin] Then I said “I didn’t vote for him and yet I’m paying attention to him, why aren’t you? Did you vote for him?” He said “Yes” and I responded with “I seem to remember that Republicans sure paid a lot of attention to Obama when he was in office but now their guy is in there and he is wrecking everything he touches, they’re pretending that nothing is going wrong.”

I did most of the talking and he did the listening and while I didn’t hold back I was still polite to him. I let him know how I felt about Trump defending NAZIs, White nationalists and people who marched alongside them, about how Charlottesville voted to remove the statues, about how the rally flyer didn’t say anything about a statue protest but it did say “Unite the Right!” and list lots of NAZI and white nationalist speakers, about how web sites like Redstate have conservatives siding with NAZIs rather than their fellow Americans, all because they believe Democrats are more evil than NAZIs. I told him that if some asshole wants to pick a NAZI over a fellow American then they are a traitor to their country. I told him that while we may not all get along, we are all Americans first. If you aren’t on board with that then you are a piece of crap that isn’t worth pissing on if they were on fire.

I also pointed out that those guys on TV are feeding people crap and making them think that they are well-informed. That guy on TV is paid millions to sell you his bill of goods and all he has to do is tell you all of the negative crap you are expecting him to deliver. That the guy and his boss want him to wrap his virtual hands around a liberals neck while telling him that liberals want to do the same to him. The reason is that while we are busy wrapping our hands around each others necks, we can’t wrap them around the necks of the politicians and their patrons who are robbing us blind. We talked about 15 minutes and it ended with us discussing getting old and taking assessment of what you have learned in your time here and how hate can be such a waste of time in a person’s life. We have lots of better things to do than hate on each other. He wondered what I saw as a solution and I told him that that answer was above my pay grade.

I’m a damned good troubleshooter and can fix lots of things, but that one is beyond me! Sorry so long, I’m making up for not having posted in a bit. ;)

(Hogg’s daughter, Miss Ima Hogg, was a well-known philanthropist when I was a girl and teenager.)

lawhawk  Aug 21, 2017 • 6:28:55am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s busy running the Secret Service into the ground because of his profligate travel to and from his #emoluments violations around the country, and protecting his family when they’re going off and enriching themselves and Trump (more emoluments violations since there’s no chinese wall on separating their business from Trump’s actions in the White House).

Trump is literally breaking the agency whose mission is to protect the president and whose members are trained to take a bullet for the President.

This continues to show the disdain Trump has for everyone beneath him. If it isn’t for Trump, he doesn’t give a shit. It also again highlights that he’ll spend other people’s money so long as he profits from it - and he is every time he visits one of his properties, because that’s how he has ignored all the laws and rules regarding conflicts of interest.

Meanwhile, the GOP is back to pushing their tax breaks for millionaires like Trump over all else going on in the nation.

The GOP is fixated like a laser beam on tax cuts, because that’s all they care about. Everything else is a distraction, including health coverage. Trumpcare was their first crack at gutting health coverage to fund massive tax breaks for millionaires (justified in the name of freeing people from their health coverage).

Of course, the stench of white supremacy and bigotry hangs over the WH despite Bannon leaving the WH. The admin’s bigotry and racism is fully ingrained and one guy leaving but the bigot in chief remaining doesn’t change the trajectory.

Bannon leaving doesn’t mean Trump will suddenly start pushing coherent policies, not when his prime source for policy is Fox News and they spew this kind of bullshit:

That’s Tammy Bruce claiming that Trump can replace McConnell and Ryan, who are the respective party leaders in the Senate and House. Trump’s know-nothing supporters will buy this bullshit, but there’s a minor issue of separation of power that comes in to play.

As much as I’d love to see those three gone - it takes elections to dump McConnell and Ryan - they have to lose control of their chambers for them to lose power (or their seat). Trump isn’t able to do any of that and has no coattails.

Gonna work outdoors on this old house a bit this hot and muggy morning, then stop around noon and then check in here to see what everyone is saying and posting about the eclipse.

It’s to hit Columbus around 2:30 PM or so and we will be at the 86% covered range so there should be a nice darkening of the skies.

I didn’t have time or bucks to make a trek to see it full…so 86% will have to do.

It’s another day and another think piece about how Trump voters are faring… and whether Trump’s going to help these people.

Let me give the short answer: No.

The longer answer: Hell fucking no.

Nothing Trump or the GOP is doing will help these people. Cutting the safety net harms these people more than anything else. Giving massive tax breaks funded by gutting the safety net wont help these people. Cutting environmental protection wont help these people; they’ll be hard hit because they’re downstream from the mines that have closed and have no jobs or way to move away from the pollution Trump’s EPA is enabling.

Trumpcare didn’t fail because Ryan and McConnell refuse to work with Trump. On the contrary, it failed because they worked too hard to pass anything they could just to give Trump a “win.” They utilized every legislative tool in their arsenal to push the bill to the point that it came down a single vote killing it. There was any number of times in the process where they could have allowed the bill to fail, chucked it in the wastebin, and pushed forward with other bills more likely to succeed. But no, they kept raising the damn zombie bill again and again, pushing it further along through every legal cheat they could find. I suppose Tammy thinks that what McConnell should have done is nuked the filibuster entirely just to pass a bill that NOBODY supported.

UT-Austin removed four statues overnight: Jeff Davis, John H. Reagan (postmaster general of the Confederacy), Albert Sidney Johnston (general of the Confederacy) and James S. Hogg, a son of a Confederate general but also the first native-born governor of Texas. His statue will be relocated elsewhere. (Hogg’s daughter, Miss Ima Hogg, was a well-known philanthropist when I was a girl and teenager.)

OK, auto buffs - I know this is from the Dail Mail Fail, but hot damn, I want one of these!

dailymail.co.uk

Measuring in at 5.7 metres long and 2.1 metres wide, you’d struggle to find a parking space to put it in, let alone a garage. And despite the immensity of it, there’s still only room for just two seats.

The massive body is incredibly sleek, though, featuring the same delightfully elegant lines as the original Maybach 6 concept.

The new Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet also shares a similar chrome-finished grille and a set of glimmering 24-inch multi-spoke wheels.

It’s complimented by a new sloped rear-end design that’s been crafted to look like the deck of a superyacht. It’s certainly succeeded in that task, producing a car that looks as though you’d need to dock somewhere instead of pull over at the side of the road.

Mercedes says the 740bhp electric powertrain - made up of four compact electric motors powering each wheel - can sail to 62mph in under four seconds but only has range of 310 miles.

“…According to The OC Weekly, the group advertised the Aug. 19 event by telling people that it was time to “purge their homes, State, and country of degenerate literature.”

“This includes literature of Marxism, Communism, Bolshevism, literature with liberal, democratic tendencies/attitudes, and writings supporting the decline of Western Culture,” the event description read. “Books on sexuality and sexual education which serves to indoctrinate the life of degeneracy, such as Cosmo and Teen Vogue should be brought to the fire as well. We will also burn the Koran, publications such as Karl Marx, and more. We must create a future without degeneracy for our children.”

Colleague at work just had a family from Mexico come stay with him North of Toronto. …The total world wide loss of tourism to the US will no doubt be huge and effect many business because of the hate that Trump has stirred up.

Today’s more thought than question:

Apparently arrests are up though actual deportations are down

Still the administration touts the numbers, the “crackdown”, the “tough on illegal immigrants”

Any actual, you know, threats or terrorists? I mean you dont deport those, you hold and prosecute, right?

Now probably this could be researched. I’m not sure how. About the “quality” of these arrests and deportations. How many kids, moms, long time residents, earners, taxpayers? People holding “real” jobs.

And if they are deporting folks who were working, did an “american” walk right in and scoop up that job 5 minutes later?

Otherwise, what’s the point? Yeah, yeah, i know….

Oakland nurse Maria Mendoza-Sanchez and her husband, Eusebio Sanchez, were deported to Mexico, despite having clean records, U.S. citizen kids, and years of paying taxes.

He alleged that the “credible threats of violence from the left” prompted him to cancel.

So basically, they get to smear libruls with making threats of violence —which has caused them to cancel their planned “peaceful” book-burning. Got it.

Woke up a few ago and discovered that we will not be seeing any of the eclipse from here in Brookings, OR because the sky is socked in solid with FOG and not smoke. While I’m kind of bummed to not be seeing any of the eclipse I am really glad to see this drippy fog that I usually hate. The wind is dead calm this AM, everything in the area is soaked in condensation and the forecast for gently west winds is on for the afternoon and the next couple of days. I’ll take our town and area not burning down over an eclipse, any day.

I hope those in Oregon have better luck seeing the eclipse, for once I’m going to be enjoying our coastal fog. :)

Regarding the Barcelona terror attack, it looks the manhunt for the driver may well be over:

Police hunting the chief suspect in last Thursday’s Barcelona van attack have shot dead a man to the west of the city who appeared to be wearing an explosive belt, Spanish media say.

The shooting is said to have happened on a road in the Subirats area.

Earlier, police confirmed they were hunting for Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, suspected of driving a van into dozens of people on Las Ramblas.

Some Spanish media are reporting Abouyaaqoub is the man killed.

But Spanish police have yet to officially confirm this.

It has yet to be officially confirmed by the authorities.

Theoretically, the POTUS can call on the party to vote to remove them from their positions as speaker and majority leader, but he cannot force any such action on their part.

Thinking about this, one supposes that there actually IS a way for “Trump to replace Ryan and McConnell” - although it would entail putting some sort of pressure on a majority of Republican Representatives (at least 121) to vote to oust Speaker Ryan and replace him with another, presumably more-pliable candidate. How the Trump WH might manage this difficult (and AFAIK, unprecedented) feat is an enormous - one might say YUUUUGE! - question*: In addition to likely voluntarily sparking an intra-party fight of the likes unseen since the Civil Rights fights of the ’50s and ’60s, it:
1. Has no Constitutional, legal, administrative (not to mention customary) precedent OR process.
2. Would require extraordinary “pure politicking” skills WAY beyond the capacity of this White House.
3. Assumes that the Trump Personality Cult has enough public support in enough Congressional districts to overcome party-organization opposition (if any).
4. Would have to be accomplished pretty much immediately, as this sort of GOP civil war would probably damage (sink?) the Party’s chances for next year. In which case (under rules the Republicans themselves have set up) they would be a Minority with little power beyond pure obstructionism.

*and repeat the process with the even-more-famously-independent Senate. Good friggin’ luck!

You know, if I ran for POTUS under the current circumstances, I’d be on the talking head shows and my theme would be, “Folks, we have to confront an uncomfortable truth. A not-insignificant segment of the American population has gone hopelessly insane; they believe in ludicrous ideas, indulge in outlandish conspiracy theories and wallow in self-pity that they are the victims of thorough-going and systematic oppression, despite all empirical evidence to the contrary. The question I ask to you, my fellow Americans whose minds still function in objective reality, is what are we to do about this? This is a national conversation we need to have.”
