What little bit of a diplomatic community we have.

“Our troops fight to win?” Well, they try. You need a strategy and a goal first.

When we went into Afghanistan, it was to oust the Taliban from the government and find bin Laden. Those goals were achieved.

I’m not saying it’s a good plan, or at all feasible.

But Trump has been consistent in his fantasy that we invade a country and then tender them a bill.

But, as a student of colonialism…creating just enough infrastructure to gut a valuable natural resources is a thing that’s been done before.

The reparations from WWI led to the rise of Hitler. The rebuilding of W. Germany and Japan after WWII led to trusted allies for 70 years (until trump came along)

Look guys we already knew about this policy. Like many, I kinda left it alone at the time. When we have ISIS pinned in somewhere, I’m totally fine with the big hammer. But when they are mixed with civilians, hostages, we do not abandon our humanity for the sake of ending theirs. That way the damnation of a hell on earth follows.
But sadly we had this.

Defense secretary Mattis says US policy against Isis is now ‘annihilation’
Retired general indicates aggressive turn in Iraq and Syria, saying ‘intention is that foreign fighters do not survive’ and ‘civilian casualties are a fact of life

Not in Afghanistan. But yeah, Trump doesn’t learn from anything, anywhere.

As aware as I am about the reputation of Afghanistan as a quagmire, my guess is the fantasy is much like the USSR’s vision of a blue-water Indian Ocean port: the assumption is the correct combination of captive central government and terror can power through.

Threatened war with nuclear-armed Pakistan, wants to force them to negotiate by pandering to India’s nationalists, going to make Afghanistan pay for our “help,” says there will be no nation building, threatened NATO if they didn’t “pay up” or help us, insists the international community is behind this.

In other words he has absolutely no idea what he’s doing. I would make a better president simply because I would listen to my advisers, the military, Congress, the intelligence community (that is, all the people he’s pissed off).

About an average day I guess.

Yeah, but my point is that it doesn’t matter if it’s feasible, it matters if the assumption of “paying” for the conflict incorporates this kind of neo-colonial concept, because that’s going to make the conflict even more fucked-up.

The direct point of comparison here is the Bremer Plan, which also was a total fantasy…but they still tried for it.

Inspired by the Women’s March, a group of 6 women in Brunswick, Ga. banded together and decided to fight for the issues which have been under attack by the current administration. That small group of women, has now become 300 strong and grows daily. We are finding our voice in our sisterhood, and as our voice gets louder, I hope we can give a new meaning to the words “the south will rise again” where it will be followed by…”AND IT WILL BE WITH MY SISTERS AND ME STANDING ARM AND ARM AGAINST HATE, RACISM AND BIGOTRY.”

I know we will not use that phrase, but now, when I think of it or hear it, I think those words are just the beginning of a different sentence. One where my sisters are joined together to find solutions to the problems we face. Where we are growing stronger every week. Where we are Determined. Where we “Persist”, we “Resist” and we “Reclaim our Time” to move forward not backwards.

Read the rest. Worth it.

I’m watching Lawrence O’Donnell and two guests discuss how a part of the beginning of Trump’s speech was an attempt at a do-over after he had expressed support for Nazis, KKK members, and other white supremacists. If this was Trump’s attempt at a walk-back, he could have saved his breath. I consider some things hard to move past, and a president’s open support for some of our citizens who want to kill others of us due to no fault of our own is one of those things. He had no idea that when he uttered those words of support for the evilest among us last Tuesday that it would constitute a damaging blow to his presidency. I didn’t like him before he showed his support for the aforementioned persons, and the only reason I won’t say I hate his guts is that my parents taught me to never say I hate another human being. He was on my sh*t list before last Tuesday, and he will always be on it.

I fucking hate these people. They love the idea of war because of the tropes about WW2 they’ve ingested…and over and over again they don’t actually plan, or value their troops, or think about civilians in-country are variable when you’re occupying their land, or think about what the end-point is.

Apparently a Maggie Haberman kind of idiot.

Someone ought to ask her if she is trying out for a Judith Miller part in a really really off-Broadway play.

Her source was Bannon. She’s freaking out.

She’ll kiss some ass, bash Hillary and all will be well inside the beltway. I have to laugh at how huffy she gets when anyone calls her on her shit.

Pretty sweet y’all lucked out with clear skies!

We were concerned because of a weather report yesterday saying a chance of thunderstorms during the eclipse.

We had thunderstorms just after dawn, and the sky was completely clear by eclipse time.

I got some crappy photos, and some really good ones. Amazed what I could do with a little Polaroid digital camera with eclipse glasses over the lenses. (Should have used my film Polaroid, but harder to post those photos.)

Funny but this reminds me of another revenge action by a president. Bush the Stupid attacking Iraq because they made fun of Bush the Old and Trump the Liar attacking Afghanistan because Russia got their ass handed to them so Putin took his puppet to wipe them out.
