From the tail-end of the previous thread (if we collect enough LGF threads, can we make a shirt for a lizard):

re: #244 teleskiguy

Pretty sweet y’all lucked out with clear skies!

We were concerned because of a weather report yesterday saying a chance of thunderstorms during the eclipse.

We had thunderstorms just after dawn, and the sky was completely clear by eclipse time.

I got some crappy photos, and some really good ones. Amazed what I could do with a little Polaroid digital camera with eclipse glasses over the lenses. (Should have used my film Polaroid, but harder to post those photos.)

We had to use the vegetable steamer because our colanders have straight slots instead of holes.

Also, cast on a rough sidewalk the picture is not quite as clear.

SD College Republicans suffer backlash after demanding Muslims denounce Barcelona attacks

“It’s hard to tell whether you’re just trolling Muslim students because you think this type of bullying is fun & edgy, or whether you seriously believe your fellow Muslim students might be supporters of terrorism,” one person wrote. “The former possibility puts you beneath contempt, while the latter highlights how embarrassingly ignorant you are, so I’m not sure which you’d prefer.”

Memoir controversy[edit]
In 2016, Linton self-published a book about her experience, titled In Congo’s Shadow, co-authored by Wendy Holden.[7] Linton withdrew In Congo’s Shadow from sale after many readers took offence over her portrayal of Zambia. The book has been criticised for its inaccuracies and promotion of the false narrative of “the white saviour”.[15] She later apologised for causing offense and promised to donate all profits from the book to an appropriate charity.[16] The Zambian High Commission in London condemned her for falsely presenting Zambia.[17]

Looking at the rolling polls, it appears Trump’s bottom is about 34% who “approve”. Even after Charlottesville the numbers have not moved below this.

It’s pretty clear that about a third of Americans are so invested into their mythology that Trump’s actions are pretty much irrelevant.

I still see coming across my Facebook stream those who idolize Ivanka. For no reason that I can tell other than she is living a lifestyle that her fans fantasize that they can have one day if only the evil libruls would disappear.

I heard a talking head say these rallies make Trump feel good and bolster his determination.

William Kristol on MSNBC was saying he took Trump to heart when he talked about how tough these decisions can be. It made him more human and not the I-can-do-it arrogant guy…or something.

This is at least the tenth time the press has said he just became more presidential.

They do not seem to learn anything. Or, being presidential isn’t what it used to be.

Going to Playboy for the articles:

When Tina Fey vented about Charlottesville, neo-Nazis and Donald Trump while cramming her mouth with handfuls of a sheet cake decorated with an American flag on Weekend Update: Summer Edition last night, the internet went nuts. “Love Tina Fey, but I’m REALLY not feeling her ‘Ignore racism and stress-eat instead’ take. It strikes me as willfully naive and privileged,” bloggers Tom & Lorenzo tweeted. “Tina Fey’s ‘Eat Cake’ Strategy After Charlottesville Is Bad Advice,” The Daily Beast somberly opined.

Thanks for that sharp insight, Daily Beast. The only problem with it is that Fey isn’t in the advice-giving business. She’s in the satire business, so don’t call us crazy for suspecting that when she urged viewers outraged by white nationalism’s depredations to “find a local business you support—maybe a Jewish run bakery or African-American run bakery—order a cake with the American flag on it…and just eat it,” she was mocking a clueless attitude, not endorsing it.

To anyone who took to Twitter to complain that her recommended solution to Trump-induced stress looked like “white privilege in action,” all we can say is bingo. We’ve watched the routine more than once, and it’s brilliant. It’s a brainy, self-lacerating caricature of how easily Trump-phobic vanilla liberals with relatively pampered lives, knowing they’re at little or no risk of being oppressed or marginalized themselves during his reign, can settle for venting their genuine but ineffectual rage without consequences.

70
Joe Bacon 🌹  Aug 21, 2017 • 9:48:10pm

I have to give props to Josh Marshall for trying to cheer me up. He’s documenting about how ol’ Mitch seems to be in very serious trouble in Kentucky!

A few moments ago I noticed a new PPP poll showing that Mitch McConnell seems to have been damaged significantly in his home state of Kentucky by the effort to repeal Obamacare. The number that caught my eye was that McConnell has an astonishing 74% disapproval rating with just 18% approving of his performance in office. A hypothetical Democrat beats him by 7 percentage points. But that only tells part of the story.

McConnell is down at 18% approval. But Trump has a 60% approval rating in the state. If voters are upset with McConnell’s dogged efforts to repeal Obamacare, why is Trump doing so well? Or is it that McConnell failed to repeal Obamacare? And Good Lord, how can Mitch McConnell have a 74% disapproval rating? Congressional leaders always have low approval. See Boehner, Pelosi, Gingrich, et al. But that’s nationally. They almost always maintain strong support in their own states or districts. After all, that’s how they keep getting reelected. This is just a snapshot long before McConnell will face reelection in 2020. But for now the poll shows McConnell trailing a Democratic opponent 37% to 44%.

Read the full article. It will bring a little sunlight into your soul!

So he’s gone from threatening nuclear war with North Korea to pushing for nuclear war between India and Pakistan?

It appears he was sending a veiled threat to Pakistan that we would go to war with them.

He seems to think India can pressure Pakistan into doing something (proof I am better off not having gone to college, because it obviously didn’t help him).

Any competent advisor could have told him using India as a stick against Pakistan is stupid. Moreover, he accused both Pakistan and Afghanistan of just taking from us and not giving anything back in return - he alluded to the idea he wants to make Afghanistan pay for all the warfare he’s planning.

Holy crap I’m glad I’m no longer in the Navy. I thought it was bad enough when we had to go to Lebanon after the Beirut bombing because I thought Reagan was clueless.

No, they’re not. 67 cancellations tell me that not only are they not terminally stupid. It also informs me they’re not as “brave” or “superior to others” as they’ve been claiming they are. Every time they try to gather somewhere, their *sses need to be run out of town ASAP. They’ve lived in their little hate bubble and pumped each other up for so long that they started to believe the BS they were telling each other, but after Americans saw what they did in C’ville and how Heather Heyer was run down by one of them, we decided enough is enough. They looked pitiful in Boston. The world doesn’t work the way they thought it worked, and a majority of us don’t believe the BS they believe. I’m black as you know, rc, and there is nothing they have that I want to “take away from them” because I have my own sh*t that I worked hard to acquire. I’m tired of them stereotyping and scapegoating those who don’t agree with them and thinking they can get away with it because they think that, at birth, they were somehow imbued with some special ingredient that makes them think they can abuse others who don’t agree with them just for sh*ts and giggles. Their rocks and caves are waiting for them.

Allen Armentrout of Pensacola, Florida was kicked out of school after he wore a Confederate uniform to Charlottesville, Virginia.

Armentrout was told that his final year of enrollment at Pensacola Christian College was being terminated.

“I have been released from my school and will be unable to return to college to finish my senior year,” Armentrout told WXII in an interview. “I’m processing this and making adjustments to my life to compensate for this scrutiny.”

“Pensacola Christian College recognizes the dignity and value of all people, and we respect the history of America,” the school said in a statement. “We encourage individuals to exercise discernment and seek to build reconciliation, especially during a time of mourning like Charlottesville is experiencing.”

Someone needs to get together a group of Union army re-enactors for one of these white supremacy/confederate demonstrations. Have them carry axes, shovels, big bags of loot, and lit torches (real ones, not the tiki things). They would have big signs identifying themselves as Sherman’s Marchers. They might put some of the more emaciated members in chains and Confederate rags and have them play the role of prisoners.

Warhammer Time

Dreadnought

When the greatest of the Astartes are crippled in combat the Battle-Brother’s body will be repaired and transferred into an armoured cybernetic sarcophagus outfitted with extensive life support systems. This sarcophagus is then interred within the heart of the armoured body of a Dreadnought if there is even a spark of life left. The pilot himself survives only as a tightly curled and shrivelled organic component deep inside the Dreadnought, which is at once his reborn body and his tomb. Sustained and kept alive within the sarcophagus, the link between his physical being and the Dreadnought’s systems is absolute and for the remainder of his life. The Space Marine within the sarcophagus will control the robotic body of the walker and experience the outside world through a web of cyborganic neural links and sensors implanted within his life support systems. The sepulchre that contains a Chapter’s Dreadnoughts is a holy shrine, and the Techmarines tend to their charges with great care, fastidiously applying sacred oils and unguents while chanting the Litanies of Preservation. To honour these courageous warriors, the fallen heroes are allowed to sleep away the centuries, until need calls them to war once more.

Minneapolis attorney booted from law firm after he’s exposed as the owner of neo-Nazi record label

Minneapolis patent law firm has dismissed an attorney after his partners were alerted to his ownership of a record label that releases music by neo-Nazi and white supremacist artists.

According to the City Pages, attorney Aaron Davis, a partner at Patterson Thuente had been placed on “administrative leave.” but now his biography has been scrubbed from the firm’s website due to his involvement with Behold Barbarity records.

Davis was outed over his connection to the label by the City Paper last week, with reporter Susan Du noting the subject matter and song names the label promotes.

Wear the damn thing to a Civil War reenactors meeting and it is a symbol of heritage and history. Wear it to Charlottesville for a White Supremacy rally and it is a symbol of racism.

Thanks to the Nazi rioting in Charlottesville we are seeing an avalanche of accountability in this country. I predict that it will continue and spread to other areas of assholery like conspiracy theories and antivaxx agitation. For 50 years, shitheads of every stripe, from Nazis to flat Earthers, have been running wild and turning this country into a toxic swamp simply because so many people mistakenly thought it was illegal or unconstitutional to fire them from their jobs, boycott their businesses, refuse them service, throw them out of private schools, etc. Many s-heads even pretend that it is a violation of their rights to criticize or ridicule them. Now, the country is learning better.

Mr. Shithead, meet Mr. Consequence and Ms. Accountability.

“alt-right” was the attempt on the part of Nazis and White Supremacists to convince us that they merely occupied a position to the far right of the political spectrum, instead of showing themselves for what they really are, namely a threat to American values and freedom.

Hello all! Checking in from Brookings, OR to let you know that the town is still here but unfortunately people have lost homes northwest of here and there is no doubt that more losses are to come. Today was foggy this AM and early afternoon, with the fog clearing about 3 PM but heavy low clouds overhead. Real clouds, not clouds of smoke since the wind was mostly calm or generally from the W/SW all day long. No ash either. While the fog thoroughly soaked everything it was over, unfortunately that only extends about a mile inland and north of the Chetco River along the coast for about two miles. Temperature was forecast at 67 on the coast but luckily it only got up to 57 late in the day. While temps were much hotter inland around the fire area (75-85), they were a bit lower than expected too. The light winds and lower temps made firefighting a bit easier today and the word is that the fire did not progress “much”.

The PTB held a meeting this evening at our middle school and the local radio broadcasted it. Unfortunately, I think they put the mic in a men’s room stall because it was mostly hollow sounding echoes so it was pretty hard to understand what was being said. A local reporter gave a brief synopsis of the meeting later on the same radio station, leaving out the bits about people asking why this blew up the way it did and why the fire has been so understaffed. He also left out others who were yelling and asking who was going to pay for their losses. I won’t waste my time with the “story” the guy told as to how we got where we are but it was great ass-covering, I’ll tell you that much. Regarding the fire, the active left flank of the fire stretches from around Carpenterville to the south base of Mt Emily, about 6 miles SW of Brookings. Overall about an 11-13 mile long west front over heavily forested terrain. One advantage to fighting the fire in private lands are all of the roads and clearings all over the area that will give the fast access to spot fires and act as firebreaks. I hate saying that as this land is owned by people who are hoping that their property escapes the inferno and I hope any damage is minimal. The firefighters need to do what they do but it sure is tough for those it is happening to.

We also learned that we have become the top priority in the nation and resources are heading our way (Please!). We have hundreds of firefighters from all over the country staying around town and down at the harbor and everyone is heartily welcoming them to the town. More are on the way, same with equipment. The fire is at 91,000 acres now where it was 4,500 acres five days ago. Calm weather is supposed to remain for the rest of the week (hot but not windy inland, cool and in the mid-60’s here on the coast. The fog is back tonight but is supposed to lift for a few days tomorrow afternoon. One possible dark point is that they are forecasting another “Chetco Effect” this friday, which is what caused the fire to flare up like it did this week.

The only good thing about this disaster is that I’ve been paying more attention to it than the Disaster in Chief.

In closing… FUCK TRUMP.

Here’s a pic looking north up our street. This was early evening of the 19th, just as it was starting to clear a bit for the evening.

There are mountains behind that smoke!

Brookings is unusual in that it’s on the west coast and it faces south. This affects our weather quite a bit and it’s not unusual for us to be the warmest spot on the Oregon coast, even in the winter. It is also what gives us our “Chetco Effect”, which is our version of the Santa Ana winds except ours can happen any time of the year, even in the winter. A few years ago it was in the mid 60-70’s for a couple of weeks in January so I hauled our motorcycle out for some fun winter riding.

We don’t miss Spokane a bit (moved here 25 years ago).

That’s just it, Trump didn’t make a decision. Hell, even Glenn Greenwald’s putting the blame on Mattis, McMaster, and Kelly. And apparently Tillerson, deciding that a war is good for business (higher oil prices), is onboard with ramping up over investment in this quagmire. So like most of his “decisions,” Trump got led by the nose with promises that he’d get all the credit if it panned out.

Depending on whether you set the beginning point at when the first US advisors showed up or when the first conventional troops did, our presence in Afghanistan has gone as long or longer than the Vietnam War. Much like that war, we’re committing more men to fighting to keep a corrupt government in power.

Although admittedly, we do know that the alternative here really is bad (though I’m not sure we can any longer say ‘worse’); I don’t particularly wish to know what the Taliban plan to follow up with after they destroyed the Buddhas of Bhamiyan last time they were in power.

But because of who’s in power on ourend now, we can’t say for sure the Taliban are still worse either. Not if the Afghan government really did accede to Congo Free State-style resource-rape to remain in power, the way Dolt45 suggested last night.

Remains Of Some Missing Sailors Found In ‘Sealed Compartments’ On USS John S. McCain

The commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet says Navy divers have found remains of some of the 10 missing sailors aboard the USS John S. McCain after the guided-missile destroyer collided with a merchant vessel in waters off Singapore earlier this week.

Adm. Scott H. Swift, speaking at a news conference in Singapore, said the Malaysian navy, which is conducting a search at sea in the area where the collision took place on Monday, has also reported finding remains, but it was not yet clear if they were from the McCain.

I’ve been contending that those who cry about the removal of CSA statues would have no problem if the people of Cuba removed Castro era statues and memorials in Cuba. They certainly did not object when Saddam’s statue fell in Baghdad. I don’t favor destroying these monuments. I feel they belong at a museum because what happened after the Civil War and how it was memorialized is almost as important as the Civli War itself.

When my daughter was here she asked “What happened to all your Civil War books, Mom?” and I told her to look in the back bedroom where the builders loaded a bunch of laundry baskets with all the books from the book shelves when they had to repair the ceiling.

It might be interesting to try to build a history of black lives in America that whites would go to. Start early, go through the civil war, and date things up through the near present. Show that these statues were mostly put up in the 20th century.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area. It’s not a day ending in Y unless Trump or the media do something spectacularly idiotic.

Rucker thinks that Trump said something presidential? That’s the pivot? He’s fooling himself and his readers if he thinks anything good will come from Trump’s renewed involvement in Afghanistan. Trump didn’t signal any actual changes in tangible military strategy. He didn’t identify a goal or metric by which you can claim we win. He’s just indicated that we’ll be sending more troops and spilling more blood in the sand with no end in sight because he doesn’t care about anything other than what it makes him look like in the eyes of his supporters.

Meanwhile, Pence was going on this morning about the need for more monuments and statues, and I think I’ve found the proper tone:

Who knew they could stack crap so high will be the rejoinder when people look upon statues to Pence and Trump.

It also renews faith in my fellow Americans when I see stuff like this, and it’s a reminder that hate grows when people don’t speak up and speak out against the bigotry:

In a panel discussion with CNN, his supporters agreed that they were all fine with the increase in troop levels with Afghanistan.

“This is what he said he was going to do,” said Bobby Viera, criticizing former President Barack Obama for not doing what Trump is doing now.

Host Alisyn Camerota recalled Trump’s tweets attacking Obama’s troop increase in Afghanistan, wondering why it was bad for Obama to do it but it was strong for Trump to do it. Another supporter, Jimmy Dozier, explained that it was due to Trump’s consultation with his generals, while Obama ignored his, a talking point frequently pushed by the right-wing.

“He can do what he wants!” one supporter shouted over the rest, excusing the president contradicting himself.

“President Trump is smarter than anyone in this room,” said Dozier. “He has made millions of dollars. He knows what he is doing.”

When it came to Trump’s response to the white supremacists and Nazis in Charlottesville, none of the people were “troubled” by it.

Stanton was also a Democrat. A lot of people especially on the right want to make the Civil War out to be Dems versus Republicans. That’s nonsense. While the Republicans were pretty much all Unionists, there were plenty of Democratic ones as well.

IT’S GOHMERT!

On Monday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told Fox Business, “This has been stirred up. This is being driven by forces of evil that are so far beyond what normal people can think about.”

Gohmert then went on to say that the Democratic mayor of Charlottesville and the Democratic governor of Virginia conspired together to bait white supremacists and Liberal protesters into fighting each other in the streets of Charlottesville.

“There is a strategy to make race the number one issue in 2018 and 2020. They think it’s their ticket back this is going to blow up in their face,” he continued.
According to Gohmert there were “witnesses” who saw the KKK and Black Lives Matter protesters getting off the same buses. And he’s claiming that all of them were just actors paid by Democrats.

“We need an investigation as to what happened in Charlottesville,” Gohmert demanded. “Who paid for the different groups to come in? Who ordered the funneling of those groups together? Who ordered to stand by while the violence goes on?”

As a Kentuckian, I have little hope that my home state voters won’t re-elect McConnell if he runs again. He’s a master of negative campaigning.

The other tidbit that stood out to me in that article was this:

Trump has nurtured a lifelong infatuation with military culture, going back to his youth at a military academy. One of his favorite movies is “Patton,” the 1970 Hollywood biopic of Gen. George S. Patton’s exploits during World War II.

So buy him a GI Joe doll and some toy soldiers to satisfy his “infatuation.” JFC

and this one (about that hideous photo from the other day)

In a wood-paneled room, Trump sat at a table scowling as 13 advisers stood behind him, each of them stone-faced and staring into the camera. The flags of the five military branches filled the background. To Trump, this was the image of strength.

So it was posed that way—what did he do, hand out lemons for them to suck on?

The most depressing thing is that this is true - Cheeto Benito *is* smarter than his supporters (because, as I’ve heard it said, a successful con-artist doesn’t need to be smart per sae, only smarter than the people he’s trying to con).

It all depends on your definition of smart. Most Trumpsters of my acquaintance would score higher on an IQ test. But when it comes to tests of gullibility, they would all fail. The information they accept is filtered and even if they read other viewpoints, it is automatically rejected because they are embedded in the cult. And they are basically racists at their core who support the preservation of the confederate statues because “heritage”. They are not the WWC but they still think Trump is brilliant.

So what’s Prince’s theory? That the sailors who were supposed to be on the bridge of the McCain were all off taking “sensitivity training” or whatever, and let that tanker run into them? While they left the ships token blind guy on watch because they were too “PC” to give him another post?

Moron.

PS: Erik Prince’s idiocy aside, what actually did cause the collisions involving the Fitzgerald and the McCain is still a pretty big mystery. And unfortunately, since whatever they do determine as the cause is going to - probably - be embarrassing to the Navy, it’s not likely to be revealed any time soon.

Why Americans Get Conned Again and Again

While Balleisen’s text is often rollicking and engaging, it leads readers to a rather bleak conclusion: Americans don’t really want cheaters and con artists punished, or driven out of national institutions. On the contrary, the historical record Balleisen reviews suggests that many Americans actually admire con artists and seek to emulate them.

Fraud is a phenomenon that knows no borders, but American exceptionalism, as Balleisen shows, includes a special vulnerability to fraudsters and con artists. As he points out, “Many of the world’s most expensive and ambitious frauds have occurred in America” because “openness to innovation has always meant openness to creative deception.”

I think there’s a lot of truth to this. Canadians aren’t immune to cons, for example, but because our national character tends to be a bit more circumspect and cautious compared to the US, we’re less vulnerable to bombastic feel-good dumbfuckery.

I am pretty good at paying attention to faces.

I like seeing a “testimonial” ad and then seeing that same actor in another commercial for something else. Pretty much puts paid to them being a real person endorsing some service.

There are commercial producing companies that use the same actors in many commercials. It’s kind of fun picking them out as they become different characters as needed.

If you’re referring to word “innovation” in the section I quoted, I wouldn’t take it too literally (or assume it only refers to what appears to be technical/scientific achievement). Think of “innovation = con” as it manifested itself in the financial crisis, the “trickle-down” scam, the “big, beautiful wall” idiocy, the “durr hurr trump a brilliant businessman” derp, and so on. Maybe instead of “innovation”, the term should’ve been “get rich quick” or “entrepreneurship.”

I think the author’s point is, America falls too much in love with grandiose, simplistic, showy promises (and sadly, GOPers are good at that while Dems aren’t -_- )

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE LEFT WHITE SUPREMACY GROUPS

White supremacist groups have a retention problem. Although it’s hard to say how frequently people abandon supremacist organizations—namely because researchers don’t know how many people join in the first place, making calculating a defection rate nearly impossible—members often become disillusioned with the organizations and leave, says Pete Simi, a sociologist at Chapman University in California. Simi has been able to conduct dozens of interviews with former racist hate-group members for his studies. His work suggests that people can, in fact, change.

Simi also works with Life After Hate, a non-profit founded by former neo-Nazis and other hate-group members that aims to help others to exit extremist organizations. The non-profit’s leadership says Life After Hate has helped hundreds leave white supremacy. At the same time, plenty of Simi’s interviewees left their hate groups because they disliked the particular organizations without abandoning their racist beliefs.

Editor’s Note:

What should you do if neo-Nazis come to your town to rally? University of Washington historian Laurie Marhoefer, an expert on the original German Nazis, says counterprotests can actually play right into the Nazi strategy of drawing their opponents into violent clashes. In Nazi Germany, she writes, “violent confrontations with antifascists gave the Nazis a chance to paint themselves as the victims of a pugnacious, lawless left. They seized it.”

And historian Matthew Delmont of Arizona State is troubled by people’s surprise at the resurgence of white supremacism in the U.S. “When Americans celebrate the country’s victory in WWII,” he writes, “but forget that the U.S. armed forces were segregated, that the Red Cross segregated blood donors or that many black WWII veterans returned to the country only to be denied jobs or housing, it becomes all the more difficult to talk honestly about racism today.

Trump’s Interior Department moves to stop mountaintop removal study

Trump administration officials have told the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to halt a review of the increased public health risks faced by Appalachian residents who live near mountaintop removal coal-mining sites, the academies revealed in a statement issued Monday.

Word of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement order was disclosed by the academies just hours before the scientific panel conducting the study was scheduled to hear from coalfield residents at a public meeting Monday evening in Hazard, Kentucky, and then hold two days of business meetings in Lexington.

Academies spokesman William Kearney said in a statement that the OSM told the academies in a letter Friday to “cease all work” on the mountaintop removal study. The letter indicated that Interior had begun “an agency-wide review” of grants and cooperative agreements in excess of $100,000, “largely as a result of the Department’s changing budget situation,” the academies said.

I thought this was a very good comment over at DK:

it’s important for us to remember that charlottesville was a national concentration of white supremacists, and even then they only managed to turn out a couple hundred. that’s one reason why they did the nighttime torchlight photo op, because it exaggerates their numbers visually. the only way they can sustain a national protest movement is if there’s some vast sea of potential supporters willing to associate with them in public. the fact that we can outdraw them suggests there isn’t, even as there is a vast sea out there of both vocal and tacit support for a less overt form of white supremacy.

they gambled that they could swell their ranks nationally with all that passive support by sparking a good fight, but it does not appear to be playing out that way. we need to take them and their horrific ideas and rhetoric seriously, but we should remain skeptical of their claims to represent an imminent revolutionary groundswell. their recourse to the tactics of disorder and chaos in those street battles might fire some of them up, but probably comes at the cost of turning off a ton of conservatives for whom order is an important organizing principle, cops foremost among them.

shows of force are a delicate business, and often have unintended consequences.

I have a Civil War hypothesis to explain the statues: We never officially ended the part of the Civil War due to slavery. The original goal of the war was maintaining the Union of the country. And while Republicans were abolitionists, and Lincoln after the Emancipation Proclamation made the war also about ending slavery, we really ended it on preserving the union. We didn’t go through and systematically destroy all of the things that supported slavery. Reconstruction tried, but, like going to the moon, people got bored with it and moved on. And that allowed a system to be restored that was slavery in everything but name. Jim Crow and the statues were consequences of that. If we had truly ended slavery, we would have completely redone the economy of the south, redivided the land so that it didn’t match the plantations, and introduced more manufacturing.

Shorter: We still have to have the final battle over slavery.

I have a co-salesperson story you will understand.

I once worked a weekend event where bike shops and other bike businesses got together to ‘celebrate’ the coming season, show off the new stuff, and sell off as much of the old as possible. We had 6 locations, and gathered all the old clothing in one place to dump it at the sale. No dressing rooms. Women missed them, men, not so much. Women would always ask, ‘Will this fit me?’ My sales secret was to ask them, ‘How tall are you? How much do you weigh?’ This told them two things. 1.) I cared enough to make it work for them. 2.) I had a secret formula that would tell me the correct answer to their question. I sold more Lycra shorts than anyone.

I also met Bill Nye the Science Guy in the aisle. I exclaimed, ‘It’s Bill Nye the Science Guy!’ (He was only on Seattle TV at the time.) He said, ‘I am also a cyclist.’ I shall remember his words to me always.

I personally think that requiring a god to tell you to be moral means you shouldn’t be allowed to drive a car, raise children, or vote. And I think St. Paul would agree.

Absolutely and I think this is the tragedy of the GOP. I think Grant was committed to Reconstruction but the controversial election of Hayes really meant to beginning of the end of serious commitment to civil rights for African-Americans in the South in the GOP. which is why using what the parties were in the 1860’s and 1870’s is all the most stupid since both parties screwed over black people in that time for different reasons.

hence the moral necessity for the civil rights movement nearly 100 years after the 14th amendment.

partially because even though the constitution stated that everyone was equal, systematic, institutionalized, localized “mistreatment” was allowed, tolerated, disregarded, perpetuated, etc

those that were enslaved, freed, etc were not “granted” or nor “given” rights. those rights were always there (and are). before the war they were forcefully and with the power and might of “the state”, suppressed. after the war they were still forcefully and with the power and might of “the state”, suppressed by those very same mechanisms.

14A notwithstanding, the federal level mostly disregarded it, and still does

as an aside, the same is true for lgbtq. they are not being “given” or “granted” anything. as a whole, humanity is coming to deal with the fact that they have the same inherent rights and freedoms as everyone else. it’s the structural impediments to enjoying these freedoms that are being laid bare and torn away. the individual are gaining an ability - to exercise their innate freedom.

My Dad had lunch with his older sisters the other day. They all can’t stand Trump thankfully.

That’s why my parents retreated into certain members of our family and a few friends. They’d had Conservative friends, but Reagan was the last straw for them. I don’t remember exactly what it was during that administration that caused them to burn bridges, but they did. Now they’re nostalgic for old friends, reconnecting, and remembering why those bridges got burned.

But they occasionally find someone they went to school with that’s a liberal and they get so excited. “I knew he wasn’t really an idiot!” It’s absolutely hilarious. High school dynamics all over again.

But these sites, such as anti-censorship crowdfunding platform RootBocks and WeSearchr, the crowdfunding site co-founded by far-right blogger and agitator Chuck Johnson, have little name recognition and limited reach. That creates mini-echo chambers where a self-selecting group on the far-right fringe can trade memes and fund each others’ legal fees.

religion, as faith, is “belief in” something. without benefit of proof. if you want it, need it, that’s fine. faith can be powerful, useful and provide guidance and comfort.

the minute you try to pass it off or coerce others as a “belief that” ie something is a universal truth, then you have to do the work. do the science, do the math, support your position in a way that anyone else can independently and without help, arrive at the same conclusion. the same way every other generally accepted truth got to be that way.

otherwise it’s just faith. and you are welcome to it without reservation.

i dont have to believe in things without benefit of proof simply because you do.

Naw, the moral component which relates to the private, shared spheres of life that the Gov can’t necessarily influence needed/needs to be dealt with. If we are a nation of immigrants and a couple entire populations to integrate (Native and African Americans) we have to be able to live side by side and that doesn’t happen simply with an enforced federal law component and no more.

Although I definitely get your point about how many of the big tools were already in place and codified - we just need to use them. That’s actually when I think the moral component asserts itself as necessary again.

He’s got it ass-backwards; my rabbi would slap his face.

The 10 Commandments (don’t murder or rob your neighbors; don’t lie about each other; take care of the old people; take a day off work every week) is actually a pretty good foundation on which to build a lasting society. For people who’d been living in slavery for ten generations, taking orders because they were orders and there was punishment for disobeying, a good set of guidelines for how to do self-rule was important.

Hierarchal obedience faiths think the 10 commandments are important because God said so; Reform Judaism says God is important because “look at the super-useful advice and wisdom he shared with us right when we most needed it. Imagine how much misery we were spared by not having to figure it out ourselves the hard way. That was very generous of him.”

That’s why we had no “rulers” for several generations, just judges. When we asked for a king, God warned us that was a bad idea and tried to talk us out of it. Sadly, we didn’t listen.

We needed more than equal protection under the law since that covered only governmental actions. Private companies were still able to discriminate. Chicago was not a bastion of legal segregation, but the want ads from the 1950’s asked for applicants based on race, religion, and, of course, gender, the primary classification for all ads. It wasn’t until the 19th Amendment that women were granted the right to vote.

In the South, the loss of franchise still affects minorities who have been released from prison after completing their sentence. We have a long way to go for equal rights, and the distance is becoming increasingly longer with Republicans in power in states and in the federal government.

Doge is so niche, that no one at your store would have any. Bitcoin on the other hand, is extremely easy to get, and getting popular. The problem with Bitcoin is that the exchange rate to the USD is extremely variable. It went from 1BTC = $3000 to 1BTC = $4000 in a week, and could fluctuate the other way at any time.

The President thinks in extremely broad strokes. He’s not interested in details, or facts.

Was ‘broad strokes’ on the ‘pussy grabbing’ live mic tape?

What the fuck is this ‘the president spoke in extremely broad strokes’ bullshit?

CNN is actually acting like Trump’s got some kind of plan for Afghanistan. He does not.

Plan? There ain’t no plan

Mark Sumner described it pretty well:

Donald Trump, fresh off the golf course, gave a rare speech to the nation on Monday night to reveal his new plan for Afghanistan. In a half hour teleprompter plod, through text Trump gave every sign of never seeing before, he revealed no troop numbers, no dates, no goals, no … anything. He did say that the troops would be fighting “to win,” because Trump apparently believes that previous administrations told the troops that losing would be peachy. He also spent quite a bit of time saying, without really saying, that he was backing out of all the promises he made previously about pulling troops from the area.

And then, THEN, a woman comes in to ask me the TIME, because something-something apology for her PHONE.

Does anybody really know what TIME it is? Does anybody really care?

I mentioned last night that I was going to go guitar shopping today. I got to go to two stores - one was a Canadian franchise called Long & MacQuade, which was so much like Guitar Center that I felt like I was back in the states already.

The second was a mom and pop called Gig Music, where I found a pretty rare Telecaster and an old Hamer USA guitar, either of which I would have happily laid down the money for and walked out the door.

I sort of settled on the Tele and even got the salesman to work with me on the price to offset shipping costs. Then he asked me where he’d be shipping to and I told him New York, at which point he told me that Canada’s CITES law had kicked in back in January.

To comply with CITES, I’d need a permit to bring the guitar into the US. The permit takes between 60 and 90 days to be issued. If I tried to bring the guitar into the US without a permit, I’d risk having the guitar confiscated with no monetary compensation.

Guitars went back on the rack, makeitstop leaves Canada with no guitar. Boo.

I don’t know about you, but I find myself rapidly slipping into ‘grumpy old curmudgeon’ status. ‘Rapidly slipping’ being some kind of curmudgeonly exaggeration.

Heh. Some of us have been grumpy old curmudgeons for a while.

He’s trying to move France to the right, limiting labor rights.

From what I’ve heard about the labor rights in France, I can understand the desire to place some limits. I was told is that once someone is hired it’s almost impossible to get rid of them. This results in a lot of companies being reluctant to hire for fear of getting employees that they can’t get rid of if they don’t perform.

Worker protections are important and I have no objections to protecting employees from being treated as disposable assets. However, I can’t see how companies benefit from being forced to keep non-productive or problem employees.

There must be some balance between treating employees as totally disposable, unimportant assets and basically giving them jobs for life.
