Watched a good old movie this evening (no sportsball or sportsfists) - The Taking of Pelham One Two Three starring Walter Matthau as a NYC transit cop. It has a couple of cheesy plot twists, but it ratchets up the tension slowly and steadily for the whole film while still managing to have a lot of sharp humor.

They could just shut off their engines, save gasoline, and let the street river carry them along.

It doesn’t matter how long or loudly the NWS says “don’t drive through flooding,” there are a whole bunch of people who insist they know more than the Weather Service.

Did they pray for it to be diverted wholly against the Turks?

LOL.

When I was in Virginia Beach, Pat Robertson went into heavy prayer mode to spare the city from Hurricane Hugo. (It was originally predicted to strike there.) Hugo turned slightly and hit South Carolina, and we just got a bunch of wind and rain.

He went on for weeks about how Virginia Beach (and by extension, CBN) was spared with the power of prayer.

I’m sure Myrtle Beach was thankful for that.

“They really have no shame.”

They don’t need any, and I don’t think they’re capable of being embarrassed at this point by anything they do/say. As long as they can draw attention to themselves and make money by selling miracle cures, miracle waters, prayer cloths, videotapes, and engage in dispensing “special prayers” to “special persons and conducting fake healings based on placing one of their fingers on a pre-selected audience member’s head [causing that person to slump to the floor and claim to be healed] at a church or tent revival, they’ll keep their mansions and private planes.

“Good thread on the lunatic Baio assholes”

It appears to me that Baio’s black heart and ugliness toward his fellow human beings has taken a yuuge toll on his looks. I’m older than he is by more than 10 years, and I have fewer wrinkles and better-looking facial skin than he does. It seems that every time he sh*ts on the floor, steps in it, spreads it everywhere and ends up looking like the tool he is, he runs to his safe space on Fox. He was whining a few days ago about his non-existent career opportunities in Hollywood and blaming it on liberals. The truth is that Baio is a First Class *sshole and producers and studios don’t have to be bothered with his BS.

At least I am not aware of any televangelists signing up for a Virgin Galactic flight. If it were an orbital flight rather than a sub-orbital lob we would have the option of pitching them out the door, either leaving them up there or seeing them make a spectacular solo re-entry. Talk about fire from heaven.

re: #50 jaunte

I don’t know what that means.

Historically, the Irish, Italians, Poles, &c have not been treated as white (worthy of equal rights) by conservatives.

They’ve always been treated better than African-Americans or Natives, but never equally. (That is part of where the conservative apolgia about “Irish Slaves” comes in, when they want to claim African-Americans never had it so bad.) Irish are white then too. There were no Irish slaves, that has been part of conservative mythology for many decades (longer than my life).

Folk like the Know Nothings and the Klan have long attacked those from majority-Catholic countries as “sub-human.” It is also why so many Protestant denominations demonise Catholics (especially the Pontiff) today: aside from the religious differences, it is a racist position.

Such massive amounts of rain tend to foul water systems and sewage systems … there is a danger of such things as a cholera outbreak with such a massive storm.

Juanita Jean weighs in that she’s so far safe, but her last post was from this afternoon.

It’s around noon on Saturday. We are doing great. We got about 7 inches of rain last night but it hasn’t rained since daybreak so we are draining great. There was a tornado last night in the county that left a mess in a residential neighborhood but amazingly, no one was hurt.

Here’s my all time favorite local news story. About an hour ago, my son and I were watching hurricane porn on the teevee, where local reporters - who never pronounce the names of any cities or streets correctly - stand in driving rain dodging deadly tree branches so you don’t have to.

So this reporter was bent in half in the wind, telling us it was so damn awful outside that you should stay inside and get in your closet. And he earnestly says to the camera, “I don’t know how much the camera can get of this, but the smell is awful.”

Praise God, the camera couldn’t get much of it.

During a heavy rain/flood event a few years back, there was one camera from a local tv station that kept going back for a shot of a car that got stuck on a high part of Allen Parkway in front of the station as the flood waters rose. The owner had left the emergency flashers on. The water crept up slowly, over the red flashing lights, until they went out, eventually covering the whole car.

Looks like Stormfront may be going bye-bye.

Stormfront, an international supremacist web forum, appears to have been seized by its website host, Network Solutions, LLC.

The forum disappeared Friday. WhoIs, a web service that tracks site ownership, reported the Stormfront domain’s status as “under hold.”

According to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a nonprofit that coordinates name spaces on the Internet, a hold status is an uncommon status that indicates a site is under legal dispute or about to be deleted.

Network Solutions has also prohibited Stormfront from updating, transferring or deleting its web forum on its own. That means Stormfront’s web masters cannot re-introduce the site on another domain.

Should Network Solutions go through with deleting the website itself, any re-emerging version would have to start from scratch.

Well, I imagine Mr. Black has backups of his main pages, but the millions of comments are likely lost.

If Network Solutions gets his Website’s name, bringing it back up under a different name would lose him most of his membership.

I’m not surprised it took Network Solutions so long to boot Stormfront despite their hateful rhetoric and alleged connexions to murders: All that matters to a corporation is profit. My guess is Network Solutions was facing the same sort of boycott that Cloudfront got over Daily Stormer.

Network Solutions grew a conscience precisely when it cost them money. They’ve been hit before, for forcing people to register with them (by registering anything that was searched for, forcing someone creating a new domain to register with them):

Yeah, I expect the used car market around the country to see an influx of slightly used automobiles from Texas.

Well, if Michael Bay makes another Transformers movie, he can do what he did a couple of installments ago and buy get donated a bunch of flood-damaged cars (hundreds of them) and blow them all up/wreck them all on film.

532 cars destroyed in Transformers 3.

Technically, every one of the 532 cars “destroyed” in the making of Transformers 3 was already fit for the scrapheap. The cars had been donated to director Michael Bay because they were flood damaged, and therefore needed to be scrapped by law anyway.

Harvey is only a tropical storm now, but the radar images suggest it has stopped its northerly motion and may be recurving. If so then this will go on into next week.

Reminding us again that water, not wind, damage is the most common problem with tropical systems.

And it’s not just Harris county. We are seeing reports from Harris county because that is where many reporters and young people live, but the surrounding counties are going to be in bad shape too. Even east of Austin is flooding. And there is little news from the regions east of Houston to the Louisiana border.

All these areas are going to get days of rain. When a thunderstorm comes through with winds the over soaked ground will give up trees, etc.

Harvey is certainly an odd storm - it seems, at least if I’m understanding correctly, that there’s a possibility of Harvey making its way southwest back over the Gulf about 60 hours from now, meandering northeast towards Galveston for the next 30 hours over water, and then hitting Houston in 90 hours or so from now.

That’s like the guest from hell - it just won’t go away.

(both in the Scottsbluff Star-Herald)

We’re back on the “violent left” meme. The first letter talks about a single guy carrying a sign protesting who is a threat to the Republic and Trump repeatedly disavowing the Klan and Nazis. The second letter blames the violence in Charlottesville on leftist property destroyers and the leftist press tirelessly working to get Clinton elected.

I’m so glad all we have for TV here is FOX and Sinclair-owned stations, for radio hate mongering right-wing and Christian hate radio, and one newspaper that if it leans any further right it will fall over.

The one guy in the first letter was a fellow from Bayard (in my county) walking up and down Broadway in Scottsbluff with a protest sign (protected by the I Amendment).

One guy with a protest sign is a threat to the Republic. The implication in the letter is liberals are a threat to the Republic, and the paper saw fit to print that.

That has pretty much been a theme of conservatism all my life.

Unemployed liberal? All liberals are unemployed.

Violent African-American? All African-Americans are violent.

Liberal protests against the Iraq War? All liberals are anti-American and anti-military. The reason I personally think Spielberg shadow-directed Poltergeist is the style of the film. Nothing against the late Tobe Hooper - if you watch a Hooper film, you’ll notice there’s a very clinical style to Hooper’s direction; from the 1979 TV adaptation of Salem’s Lot to Lifeforce to his remake of Invaders From Mars…even something as raw and visceral as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has that clinical distance to it, like a documentary film. Spielberg’s design language and shooting style is all over Poltergeist. The man does “white middle-class suburbia before all hell breaks loose” like no one else can. It’s like E.T. with malevolent ghosts.

I’ve been splitting my weather checking time between the fire here in Brookings, OR and the hurricane/storm in Texas. If you check the river flood gauges over at NWS, records are being broken all over down there. Last word this evening from a friend of ours this who moved just outside of Houston a few years ago is that the water is half way up his front yard and a retaining pond nearby is overflowing. He was moving stuff upstairs in case his house floods. Holy shit, what a freaking disaster! The worst part is once Mother Nature is done with this disaster, Err Furor is probably going to make it an even bigger disaster.

We were socked in solid with smoke here in town today but that combined with the thin marine layer that hung around all day kept temperatures down from the forecast 81 to a much better 68. The Chetco Effect winds did not occur because conditions did not align. Conditions inland were good for the effect but coastal conditions were not; too cool with a marine/smoke layer (no ground heating) and too weak of a southern coastal breeze.

The Chetco Effect wind warning was called off for tonight but it is returning tomorrow morning and through the evening. Unfortunately, this time conditions are looking better for the effect to occur. The coast from Gold Beach to Brookings is currently at 60 degrees and not expected to cool into the low 50’s like it has been for the last week. Inland temps are also staying elevated compared to last night. Our saving grace so far is that the thin marine layer is tenaciously hanging on and if it can hang on again tomorrow then temps will still stay lower. There is a low pressure front locked over CA and almost half of coastal OR which seems to be keeping wind activity mixed and to a minimum.

Light wind from the SW cleared our area of the city for a couple of hours this evening so we were able to open up the house and let fresh air through the place and let the cats roam outside for a bit. The smoke returned when the winds shifted to the NE (2 MPH w/ gusts to 4), pushing the smoke down the river valley and over the area. I think you could smoke a ham outside right now…lol! Winds just shifted back to the SW (2 MPH w/ G 4) both here and in Gold Beach, so I hope this blows some of this smoke out of here. Morning wind is supposed to be calm becoming SW around 5 MPH in the afternoon. Let’s hope so!

One thing I am glad about is ODOT placed weather stations all over the state and tied them in to their TripCheck web site, allowing you to check current weather conditions in that area. Some of the traffic cameras also incorporate the temp, wind direction and wind speed in their images. This is one of the cameras for Brookings, looking north on Highway 101 from the mouth of the Chetco River (smoky, eh?). I live at the top of the hill, left turn, five blocks, right turn, one block, right turn and up the street on the right! ;)

Time to knock back a healthy toke… I have some excellent Super Lemon Haze oil I picked up today. I figure if I’m going to breathe smoke, I’ll chose something I like. :)

ETA: Yesterday’s stats:

- Total Firefighters: 1,662 (up 48 from the day before)
- Acres consumed by fire: 105,518 (up just over 1,200 acres)
- No additional homes lost or structures damaged: (currently 6/30+)

- A small area on Carpenterville Road just north of town is Level 3 Evac (Get Out Now!) but has been reopened to allow homeowners in to move and secure property in case the lines don’t hold.

- The Governor has signed an order that allows residents of evac areas to stay for free in state parks.

The latest NHC graphic shows the centre of the storm moving right up to the coastline and then turning north again.

The tropical disturbance in north central Florida should move off the coast today, and is expected to develop (40% in 2 days, 50% in 5 days), threatening the Carolinas.

The State of Texas activated the National Guard and sent its Emergency Response Teams to the coast before the storm hit. Right now there isn’t much they can do as the storm is still pounding the coast.

FEMA? It’s been two months and they haven’t even done diddly with our county’s emergency over our June tornadoes. FEMA has a hurricane symbol up over Texas on its Website so at least they are aware the storm exists.

FEMA has rapid response teams, several of which are dealing with the wildfires in the northwest. As far as I can find, they sent nothing to Texas before the storm.

Yeah, but that was liberal areas. Texas has already asked for emergency funding, and no doubt will ask for more.

When there isn’t a major hurricane disaster in the USA, every year conservative Oklahoma gets the most FEMA funding while bitching about taxes and liberal takers and such. (You would be surprised to learn that conservative state governments are hypocritical.)

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump was up early this morning, and his first tweet was to tout a book by none other than Sheriff David Clarke, an evil SOB whose police force is just as evil and malicious as the just pardoned convicted felon Joe Arpaio.

Clarke’s police force has blood on their hands too - including murdering a detainee who was denied water until he died of dehydration.

That was what Trump decided was more important to tweet about this morning before getting into #Harvey discussion.

And the situation in Texas is going into Katrina territory. The local authorities are simply swamped - literally. 25+ inches of rain has fallen, and they’re predicting a similar amount in coming days. There’s simply no place for that water to go, so it is flooding everything.

Police are warning people not to call unless the situation is dire. A few inches of rain in a home isn’t dire. Getting stuck in attic with rising flood waters is.

Local authorities are suggesting people write their names/ SSNs on their arms in sharpies. That’s how dire things are getting out there.

And Trump tweets about Clarke’s book. He’s a goddamed fucking moron who lacks all empathy and feeling. We have to hope that the few remaining experts in FEMA and local authorities are able to overcome the deficiencies at the top.

It is conservatism. I’m sorry if conservative voters claim that “the Republican Party left them” but no: Conservatism always concerns itself what’s best for the individual in power, and gathering power. It has always been thus.

My wife used to claim that the Republican Party left her, which is why she became a Libertarian. She has pretty much accepted now this is what conservatism really is. It’s why the “never Trumpers” have fallen one by one into line - right now the power is Trump and they will inevitably be attracted to him.

If his attacks on Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan are successful, the respective GOP caucuses in the House and Senate will abandon them for Trump. They must: the ideology is about gathering power, and always has been.

I’m seeing people complaining why Houston wasn’t evacuated and that the death toll there should be on the local officials.

Where were they supposed to evacuate to? A city/region with several million residents are supposed to go where? San Antonio? They’re hit with massive flooding too? Texas Hill Country that lacks the resources? Going west to El Paso? Into Mexico? None of those areas were equipped to handle those kinds of numbers either.

This is a shitstorm of epic proportions and the local authorities are ill equipped to handle it. They never would have the resources to handle it. State officials are likewise incapable of handling an event of this magnitude.

That’s why FEMA and the federal government are critical to disaster recovery/assistance. But that’s the very stuff the GOP and Trump are trying to push back to the states/local levels.

Texas is an incubator for these kinds of issues, and we’re going to see how devastating that can be.

The local authorities are so overwhelmed, that I fear a death toll that will be more than anyone should bear.

re: #265 lawhawk

And there are whackjobs who insist its unconstitutional for the federal government to provide disaster aid.

Checking in from Houston.

Absolutely no good news to report. We are safe. That’s it.

I am so incredibly proud of our city. People with a boat that can get into the water and rescue each other are out. People that are able to move are forming makeshift shelters in schools and bringing food, blankets, water, anything.

Makeshift stations for the boats, and even jet skis, with gasoline and food, are being set up on high ground for the citizen rescue boats. They just keep pulling people out. Areas are underwater that have not flooded in 500 years.

The water drainage system is failing everywhere as rivers, bayous, and creeks leave their banks. This has never happened in these places. Once they are out of their banks, it’s flat.

It’s a catastrophic event like I have never seen here. This is my city. I am both very proud and heartbroken.

By the Washington Post’s count, there have been 23 Obama’s Katrinas since 2009, and that only brings us through to July 2014. Assuming there have been no additional Obama’s Katrinas in the past two years, cataclysmic flooding in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, last week would make it two dozen.

We still don’t have an effective way to evacuate large cities in advance of hurricanes. The uncertainty of the path complicates designing the proper route. It’s not as though you can designate a route a year in advance and have it be appropriate for the actual situation.

There will be disasters too big to be handled by just normal responders and people who are trained to respond and to organize are an incredibly huge asset. Coastal places should be training volunteers who can come out with boats just like We train for tornadoes.

I used it on Bush from 2001-05. Unfortunately for parts of my job, I do have to refer to Trump as “President Trump”. It just disgusts me. I always thought this guy was a raging narcissistic douche. That’s the thing isn’t it? Those of us who knew him best especially people from New York and New Jersey like Lawhawk knew he was bad news and rejected him accordingly but these idiots woh only knew him as that “successful businessman” From the Apprentice. Agh.

And if she had been in charge during this disaster - the screams from the RW media/congress would be heard across the globe. With trump in charge it will be
“no one could have predicted this - they did all that was possible”

One day - probably not in my lifetime, the US will learn who knows how to run a government and who are the great pretenders.

I completely understand your frustration with Trump (and his supporters). I’m sure that my blood pressure has risen sharply since his election. Keep tweeting but keep tweeting without wishing physical harm or death on anyone.

Sometimes it’s good to take a break from politics so all this foolishness doesn’t become overwhelming. Trump is probably why I seek out comedies and cooking shows on t.v. all the dang time. LOL. I’d even suggest leaving the country for awhile and taking a vacation in a place where you don’t have to hear about Trump’s antics every minute. My few days in Montreal were wonderful.

Trump doesn’t care so long as he thinks he’s benefiting. Rescue/relief efforts are in place? He’s benefiting. When the realization that there’s going to be significant casualties (I hope not, but this kind of flooding may mean it’s unavoidable), he’s going to turn around and blame everyone but himself and his cronies.

For instance, you know you’re going to need more air support to do SAR. Are you moving assets into the region to help? Have you activated units to assist? Are you getting utilities the information/assistance needed to roll in to restore power?

Trump doesn’t know about these logistical details. He doesn’t care.

He’s a taker. He’s always been a taker.

Meanwhile, he slams givers like those transgendered servicemembers he wants to drum out of the military at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars (to save $6-8 million annually). Those people volunteered to serve.

Trump volunteered to dodge the draft so he could have his own Vietnam with STDs.

I was watching the feed from KHOU via the link in Comment #249, and they said that they had moved themselves up to a makeshift “studio” in second-floor conference room (the regular studios were on the ground floor). They apparently kept broadcasting until the flooding just got too bad. Station apparently is now closed and off-the-air.

Next thing to deal with:

When people see water rising fast they should not go into the attic; they get trapped. They must go to the roof. But that is counter-intuitive, no one thinks the water will put them that much at risk.

People do it. So now citizens are asking anyone with axes or chain saws to get them to the areas of flooding. We have to cut through roofs to get them out.

These rains are currently producing catastrophic and life-

I lived in an apartment along the Susquehanna river when Hurricane Agnes hit.
I couldn’t get to my place without a boat for a week. It took years to clean up. This is worse. Much worse. And it’s not over.

Yes, I remember Agnes in 1972 Western PA was soaked but we got off easy compared to the northeast part of PA/ Wilkes Barre was devastated. Got so bad that then-Congressman Dan Flood set up a command center to coordinate relief because Nixon’s response was so slow.

There is a sinkhole near me. It took down a 24 Hour Fitness building.

Told my husband earlier, “If President Obama were still in office I would not be worried at all. But given current conditions, the city is going to be on our own and we’ll rebuild on our own.”

That’s just reality. We’re a tough group and we’ll clean up, take care of each other, and rebuild. The city is taking care of each other as I type.

I told my sons, “Get ready. When this water goes down we will be working our asses off in the shelters. Yeah, I saw him interviewed by George Stephanopolous on ABC’s site:
He was trying to be less-assholish than normal (you could see it was an effort for him), but he couldn’t say nice enough stuff about the Federal (FEMA) response so far. The only waffling he did was when George asked him what he thought about Trump visiting Texas: Abbott kinda suggested that he (Trump) might want to limit his visit to someplace where the cleanup had already started (like Corpus Christi). IOW, stay the hell out of the way …
