Joe Biden Speaks Out: “We Have an American President Who Has Emboldened White Supremacists”

We are living through a battle for the soul of this nation
Politics • Views: 42,590

Joe Biden’s been keeping a pretty low profile since the election of Donald Trump, but today that reticence is over.

A week after Charlottesville, in Boston, we saw the truth of America: Those with the courage to oppose hate far outnumber those who promote it.

Then a week after Boston, we saw the truth of this president: He won’t stop. His contempt for the U.S. Constitution and willingness to divide this nation knows no bounds. Now he’s pardoned a law-enforcement official who terrorized the Latino community, violated its constitutional rights, defied a federal court order to stop, and ran a prison system so rife with torture and abuse he himself called it a “concentration camp.”

You, me, and the citizens of this country carry a special burden in 2017. We have to do what our president has not. We have to uphold America’s values. We have to do what he will not. We have to defend our Constitution. We have to remember our kids are watching. We have to show the world America is still a beacon of light.

Joined together, we are more than 300 million strong. Joined together, we will win this battle for our soul. Because if there’s one thing I know about the American people, it’s this: When it has mattered most, they have never let this nation down.

Read the whole thing.

I bet Trump doesn’t even mention Joe and his comments.

He knows Biden is way stronger than him. If he does anything it will be indirect and gutless. The Trump way.

He’s a chicken shit when it comes to dealing directly with strong people. He calls his goons and lawyers.

Time to call it like it is. An unprecedented threat by way of racism calls for the unprecedented step of past Presidents stepping up and demanding better. Call out un American activities like backing white supremacy. Pardoning a convicted sheriff.

Presidents Obama, Bush, Clinton and HW if you can… Please step up right now. Condemn this administration. Say it tweet it whatever you like.

I said something similar the other day. They need to knock Trump down. I know they don’t like to comment on current office holders. But is Trump worthy of that? He is not really acting Presidential so why should he be treated like one?

Everyone needs to be real. We have a real problem.

It has been some time since I was in Houston, but I do not remember it having a lot of elevation changes.

And like all big cities, sometimes the layout and engineering for roads, etc. turn the city into a series of new rivers as there is just nowhere for the water to go with retaining walls, sound barriers, mounds, parking lots, etc.

Who plans for 50” of water in a few days? Might have to start.

And when rivers are channelized and dredged for navigation, they often carry more water downstream than the would otherwise. And when they flow faster, what would have otherwise been a series of lower crests from tributaries flowing into the main channel start to merge together into one large crest…

That happens on the Rhine nearly every year: Darmstadt has a sinking water table because the meanders and swamp lands that used to surround it have been drained…nobody thought back then about where all that water might wind up, namely downstream in Bonn and Cologne…

It’s been very disturbing. All of the exclamation points and “everything is going great!”

It’s not “great.” The 4th largest city in the U.S. is becoming Atlantis. It’s a Democrat mayor holding the city together, not Trump. He has nothing to do with anything happening here.

This city is liberal. If he comes here after the storm he will be met with nothing but protests. We don’t want him here.

Amazingly, maybe inadvertently, Trump’s FEMA appointee appears to be an able, experienced crisis administrator:

My guess is nobody in the White House really gave a shit about the post so it went to someone sensible by default.

From reading the ProPublica story, the severity of the damage has been baked in the cake by decades of underinvestment in mitigation measures. FEMA has got what they’ve got right now. But after the water is gone, we’re probably going to have a worse internal displacement (er, refugee) problem than Katrina, and then the politics starts again.

Probably a lot of people underestimated it. Seems to be a thing these days…underestimating dangers that is.

On Friday we had some reports of people saying they were staying put because it was the media out to scare people and make Trump look bad. Fake news was even heard.

So, who knows what those people are saying now. Probably Gore, Clinton and Obama’s fault.

Having just narrowly escaped a direct hit from Harvey (I live in Corpus) I’ve been thinking a lot about evacuating and the costs associated. I grew up poor and we would not have been able to evacuate in the event of a disaster. We wouldn’t have been able to afford plywood to board up and protect our home, wouldn’t have had money for a hotel, etc. It cost us several hundred dollars to secure our house on Thurs/Fri. When people ask, “Why didn’t all those people leave?” I totally understand why they didn’t. For many, they couldn’t, simple as that.

I’ve noticed recently (last summer and moreso this summer) that the NWS is not doing a great job predicting our “hot spells.” They are not predicted more than a couple days ahead and both the high temperatures and the duration are not terrible accurate and need to be revised. Some of this could be due to a lack of funding for satellites and researchers, but the European models don’t seem to be able to predict all that well either.

I’d say things are changing if the old models aren’t accurate. But I don’t suppose climate change deniers think there’s a problem.

Barker and Addicks Dam/reservoirs are designed to control the amount of water coming down the bayou into central Houston. If they have to release, that’s in addition to the anticipated 12’ increase overnight.

Plus, a lot of people have ridden out storms before, and don’t really have anywhere to go. You’d be hard pressed to evacuate the fourth largest city in the country in a couple days.

And where do we go? A friend took off to stay with her daughter near San Antonio. Guess where Harvey is headed now? Thousands of folks left Houston when Rita hit and ended up driving right into it, not away, when it turned at the last minute. It is also a fact that when people freak and leave who don’t have to it prevents people from getting out who DO have to evacuate.

It was not that way in San Antonio. The City, from the Mayor, public service organizations, and the local non-profits on down, did an outstanding job in assisting the evacuees.
As I understand, many of the evacuees elected to stay in San Antonio due to that warm welcome.

Anti-evacuee is a proud American tradition. Another well documented hate of American refugees was the dust bowl. Think on how those Okies were treated as they move on to California. Specifically targeted as undesirables.

How are you holding up?

We have a large leak in our roof, which is nothing. We are dry and safe. Roofs and Sheetrock are fixable.

We’d gotten a break in the rain but it has started up hard again. Now they’re starting to evacuate some hospitals. Ben Taub, which is our most critical trauma hospital, has to evacuate soon. Moving those Trauma One patients is going to be hellishly difficult. But, have to get them out.

The worst is far from over but we got enough of a reprieve to get a lot of people safe and get some shelters and rescue stations with boats set up. Now, we deal.

Did they read a different twitter feed or something?

Well, he did point out that

At times, Mr. Trump’s tweets conveyed an unabashed excitement even as a humanitarian crisis overwhelmed Houston and other flooded cities.

Hey—his excitement was UNABASHED!

And in graph 22 (of a 22 paragraph article) he finally gets to:

While the storm clearly dominated the president’s time, he also found time to promote a book by another hard-line law enforcement official, Sheriff David A. Clarke of Milwaukee, take a shot at Missouri’s Democratic senator, Claire McCaskill, repeat a threat to terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement, and reiterate his determination to build a wall on the Mexican border, saying on Twitter that Mexico would pay for it “through reimbursement/other.”

And also didn’t miss a chance to throw shade at Obama:

…he was faulted for what critics said was his slow-footed response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

If you do go, be sure and bring along extra gas, water, and food. What supplies there are of untainted gas will soon disappear and a lot of boats will be left stranded. These items will become the new currencies.

Mexico’s help will be needed.

Because this crisis is still developing and you can just tell that it’s going to be on par with the flooding from Katrina in greater NOLA.

Where are the US Navy ships to move in to render assistance? Coast Guard’s there, but they’re overwhelmed too by the sheer volume of calls - and the storm’s going to dump another 1-2 feet of rain on this area.

My wife’s got a friend who lives down in one of the Houston suburbs. He’s okay at the moment, but he’s not too far from a river that is fed by an upstream lake. The officials are warning they may need to release water from that lake to keep the region safe, which could put his area in flood risk.

None of this is good. Not a bit.

Millions of people are going to see their homes and livelihoods wiped out by the storm.

Trump’s still bullshitting his way through this and thinks it more important to talk about Clarke’s book or election chances in 2018 than to make sure that the US Navy is moving assets into the region to help, or moving the Marines and other relevant units to assist in disaster recovery in areas where the rains have stopped to the SW of Houston.

The big damage focus is obviously on Houston, but there’s widespread and massive damage up and down the coast.

Trump’s got his focus, and empathy is no where to be found.

You will not see any pictures of Trump hugging victims. Count on it. We saw Obama, Clinton, and GWB all showing empathy and feelings towards those hit by natural disasters - because that’s what normal people feel and do.

Trump isn’t normal. None of this is normal, and he’s putting lives in harm’s way by his incompetence.

The New York Times is back on the “This is the moment he became presidential” train again, by praising Trump for his tweets.

Storm Response Showed a President Engaged in the Unfolding Drama

Apparently they are reading a different Twitter feed than the rest of the world, and “access” is so important they will say anything to get it.

On Friday, as Hurricane Harvey began lashing the Gulf Coast, and throughout the weekend, Mr. Trump posted regular updates on the status of the storm and praise for the government’s response. He held two teleconferences with members of his cabinet, announced that he would travel to Texas on Tuesday, and signed a federal disaster proclamation for the state.

It was a calculated display of energetic presidential leadership — one hardly unique to the Trump administration. But it also revealed a president who was genuinely engaged by the drama unfolding in Texas, certainly more so than he has been by other pressing issues facing his administration, like tax reform or a repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Many people don’t have cars. A whole lot of people don’t have the money. And as I recall, they tried an evacuation during Hurricane Rita that wound up killing many more people than the storm did.

I don’t suppose said asshole has a plan to evacuate over two million people, or places to put them?

He’s not competent, and there’s no sign that he’s directed the military to move assets into the region to assist. You’d be damned sure that those in harms’ way would love to know that the cavalry is coming directly. The Navy website is silent about assistance. We know the USCG is on mission, but the they’re going to be overwhelmed by the scope. They need the assets that the Navy, Marines, and Army can bring.

Trump is not engaged by a long shot.

TBF, the response to Andrew took 5 days to put together, mostly because the extent of the wound was masked by the wiped-out communications. Things didn’t get moving until one of the mayors lost her shit on national TV, then it rapidly ramped up through 3-4 levels like Task Force Dragon (a reserve Army) to the final multiservice Joint Task Force Andrew.

Well, despite the giant FU so many Texas GOP gave to New York over Sandy relief:

NEW YORK — The New York Air National Guard is heading to Texas and Louisiana, bringing aircraft, vessels and manpower to respond to Hurricane Harvey.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday he deployed the emergency personnel to aid the recovery effort.

Rescue teams, maintenance and support staff from the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard is responding, along with three rescue helicopters, a rescue plane and several boats and watercraft.

To be fair, this is day 2 of the response. The communications is still available with Houston proper. The USCG is on site, and they can communicate up chain of command. The forecasts were known to all for several days now. Everyone knows or has reason to know of the historic flooding underway.

The logistics moves can be set in motion - ordering Navy assets to sea, getting military deployed to move into the region.

GOP media mouthpiece Fred Dicker was giving Cuomo all kinds of grief for “interjecting” himself into the Harvey prep, and yet it turns out that Cuomo was doing exactly what he should be doing - moving assets towards Texas to provide assistance. NYPD ESU and other SAR teams are heading South. In coming days, I expect utilities around here moving significant resources towards Texas and Louisiana to help restore power.

Because that’s what is needed.

Suspect the real damage and loss of life is in the hinterland around the cities. We have Andrew and Katrina experience to build on. People don’t want to hear that he’s feeling fine because of Harvey. They want to know that help is coming.

They want to know that help is coming directly. Trump doesn’t know/care to answer that one essential point.

People need reassurance that all the efforts of the federal government will be coming their way. That’s the point of these conference calls and what FEMA needs to be ramping up to do (despite Trump’s call to gut funding for that agency).

Oh, and while we’re at it, if we need offsets to address funding storm rescue/recovery, I suggest Congress start with Trump’s fucking wall. And then with ICE deportation efforts that aren’t strictly going after dangerous criminals.

Oh my god. I’m in tears. That hits very close to home for me.

The assisted living facility I work in had 53 residents left in our care to ride out the hurricane on Friday night. Some didn’t have any family nearby, some refused to go with the families, and believe or not, some were surprised to find themselves left behind since their families told them they would pick them up and then evacuated without them.

As soon as it was light yesterday people started bringing their moms and dads back to the community. We had no power and were in disaster mode, delivering only cereal for breakfast, dry sandwiches and chips for lunch, etc., but people brought ‘em back anyway. One resident kept saying she couldn’t see anything because it was so dark, but her daughter left her with us anyway. I started telling people, “I would urge you to walk to your mom’s apartment and see how dark the hallways are, how dark her apartment is, and if you feel like she can navigate that OK, by all means bring her back home.”

I learned when our facility flooded in May 2016 that no matter what we do, there are some people who will feel that we didn’t do enough or the right thing. I was not disappointed, as people who evacuated to safety criticized some of the choices we made, even though we stayed and rode out Harvey with their loved one and put ourselves in harm’s way to do so.

This storm lacks the kind of steering winds at the upper levels to push it out of the region. That’s why it was so slow moving once it came ashore, and now it’s meandering.

That means that the storm could go back into the Gulf, ramp up again, and come back ashore to do even more damage. Most of the tracks are suggesting a path towards the East - into Louisiana.

BlueGrl21  Aug 27, 2017 • 5:00:53pm

This afternoon’s reprieve is over. Rain pouring down again. But the reprieve gave us a chance to get people out of their homes.

I keep seeing people criticizing our local officials for not ordering an evacuation. Had they done so, it would have been madness.

1. Too many people here cannot evacuate. They are poor, disabled, elderly. They have nowhere to go, cannot afford a hotel, etc.

2. Houston floods all of the time. We knew this would be bad. No one could understand this was going to be a 1,000 year flood.

3. When the city tried to empty out for Hurricane Rita it was deadly. You have to have someplace for people to go, gas available…we’re talking about 6.5 million people leaving a city. We evacuated for Rita (had a baby at the time) and it took us 12 hours to drive what usually takes an hour. Now, imagine water starts rising with all of those vehicles on the streets. No way.

Despite what you are seeing on the news, the vast bulk of people in this city are safer in their homes. Had all of us tried to get on the streets at the same time the city would have stopped and the rain would still have come.

I can honestly say working with seniors has changed me. And I kinda think I’m good at it, too, if I may toot my own horn. But it’s hard. One of my favorites has advancing dementia and it is difficult to watch the changes from week to week. She has the most powerful singing voice I’ve ever heard, and when she would sing I could hear her, on the other side of the building, from my office — and it made me cry every time. She doesn’t remember how to sing anymore. She still comes to see me almost every day, and I am honored (I don’t know if that’s the right word) to be one of the things in her daily life that she remembers.

Problem is though, we are reliant on cell/power grid. If the shit hit the fan big time & we didn’t have that?

He’s not competent, and there’s no sign that he’s directed the military to move assets into the region to assist. You’d be damned sure that those in harms’ way would love to know that the cavalry is coming directly. The Navy website is silent about assistance. We know the USCG is on mission, but the they’re going to be overwhelmed by the scope. They need the assets that the Navy, Marines, and Army can bring.

Trump is not engaged by a long shot.

The only thing that Trump thinks is presidential to do with the military is to order some missiles to strike Hurricane Harvey.

Some Americans worked for Obama and made him happen.

Complacency set in. Nevertheless, as a whole, America does NOT deserve Trump.

And lest we forget,

Donald Trump signed away Obama-era flood standards just weeks before Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in a bid to get infrastructure projects approved more quickly.

The rule signed by former president Barack Obama in 2015 had not yet come into effect but aimed to make infrastructure more resilient to the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and flooding.

newsweek.com

Cause, ya know, the yam knows how to build shit fast and cheap (it falls down and he doesn’t pay for it anyway, but…)

If I remember correctly, I believe he also rescinded an Obama plan for local contractors on infrastructure projects as well. Wonder how much his cronies will be making in Texas?

One thing that struck me watching the news last night is how over and over the TV talking heads and their guests were saying that help was on the way because the Houston area is the center of US energy industry.

As if help wouldn’t be on the way otherwise.

And of course the nebulous hand waving regarding from where such help would come.

Almost as if they couldn’t admit in public that they needed government help.

371
freetoken  Aug 27, 2017 • 5:48:41pm

Also, the talking heads kept saying “energy” instead of oil.

As if they didn’t know or acknowledge that most of the US energy is not about petroleum refining in the greater Houston area.

Looks like. Raining again now. Fortunately we got a long enough break that the streets around the park drained. Will not take much to fill them up again with every bayou overtopped and the Brazos fixin to blow - no place for the water to drain to. Just have to hope that the rain keeps to the gentle side (like now) and not a fucking 3-4”/hr brick floater like last night.

I know that Hobby is shot (underwater) and Bush is temporarily closed (Power? Water?).

What is the situation at Ellington? That would be an ideal place to bring in C-17s to offload trucks, boats, personnel, and cargo. Big ramps, big storage, and good access to I-45 to either Houston or Galveston.

Any news?

TIA!

My suspicion is that Sartre is describing a human mode that occurs over and over in many times and places. But the relationship between the historic anti-Semite and the modern US reactionary is a path obscured by only by a leaf fall.

Modern conspiracy thinking borrows so much from a small number of sources, and the largest wellspring of themes are from antisemitic materials (mostly particularly—the Protocols). This new reactionary generation have found their way back to original materials, because the patterns and rhythms are familiar.

On the other hand, it is an unfortunate fact that there’s a finite amount of empathy in the universe, and in this twisted Trump world of ours there is a long list of people I feel badly for ahead of her.

Cause and effect is tricky. To me it is a large part of “our nation” that has brought Trump and all his crap upon us and who are the causes of most of the “damage” to which you refer. But certainly you are correct about the foolish self-divisiveness of the Dems and the left as a (w)hole.

Griffin says she isn’t a victim: “I am in a position of privilege, I will be fine,” she says. “But what about any American citizen, whether they’re artists or not, who innocently post a shocking photo on social media — will they face a federal investigation?” Griffin also worries about the “chilling effect” created by the retribution wielded by a vengeful president and his army of supporters. She thinks that just as she’s taken responsibility for her provocative image, Trump “has to take responsibility for the power he holds with his Twitter account.”

I was stupefied when Obama won the election, because I doubted it would be possible elect an African-American as president in my lifetime. I have not given up my optimism since then for future progress, but it depends on our constant and unceasing resistance to Trumpism and the conservatives’ social and economic agendae. Trump has not been given a blank slate to write on, because short of becoming an absolute dictator he will not be able to force Washington DC to bend the knee. White supremacists and new-Confederates have been vastly outnumbered whenever they have rallies, and many have lost their jobs as they’be identified.

Our main difficulty is a small minority of regressive people have easy and apparently free access to the airwaves, to the Internet, and other media. They’ve been allowed to operate free from any responsibility to be truthful or fair, and have poisoned the body politic so much that a complete fraud like Donald J. Trump could even be considered a viable candidate, much less president.

I am hoping Trump’s win was a fluke, and once it becomes clear that the election was rigged to favor him, that his administration is a disaster, and he lies about everything, people will realize he was a Big Mistake.

Hurricane Harvey is the first big test. He’s not shown much ability to deal with it.

These are people who live at the edge of Addicks Reservoir who are informed that this can happen when water has to be released from the reservoir to protect the dam integrity. It’s happened before - last year if I’m not mistaken.

Sure sucked the way they’re doing it though. Decision/announcement was made at like 7pm that they are doing it tonight starting at 2am. Just a few hours notice and in the midst of torrential rain. From my reading today those dams have been classified as “catastrophic risk” and priority 1 since 2009, with the knowledge that if the flooding exceeded a certain point the dams would have to release water in order to avoid catastrophic failure. The Corp doubled the amount of water that could be released at that point with little fanfare to alert the homeowners, etc. downstream and downgraded the flood these dams could handle to a 25 year event, instead of a 1000 year event.

Needless to say they did not publicize this to the homeowners like you might think they should.

I have …opinions on how much flood insurance should cover (namely, flood multiple times within a set time period (subject to discussion and reasonable exemption) and no, I don’t think the taxpayers should be on the hook for rebuilding your home anymore) but even I can acknowledge that a lot of the folks being hit by this are ones who really wouldn’t have thought about this risk and didn’t have any real reason to be concerned in their minds.

(I say this as someone who has priced what flood insurance would be for my house here in CA. Yes, you can laugh. For my location it would be close to $600 a year and the only way we would flood is if the dam fails, likely following an earthquake. I sympathize.)

re: #472 HappyWarrior

I’ve felt this way since Obama got elected. I thought Obama’s election was going to be the start of something real special but it woke up some ugliness and the left either turned their back on him when things weren’t perfect or ran away from him when things got ugly. The left, we need to realize yeah we have some differences but liberalism to me is ultimately about making the world a better place for the successive generations. I hope we can do that for my niece.

The left… has a limited horizon. They were super-activist through leading up to the civil rights act and voting rights act; then (mostly centered by anti-war anti-draft activism) kept it up through Medicare, EPA, OSHA, Roe v Wade, lowering the voting age, and ending the draft.

When the draft ended… that’s when the left yelled “Mission Accomplished!” and went home. They didn’t understand about needing to stay involved, consolidate gains, etc. That’s why the ERA failed, and everything’s been backsliding since. Slowly at first, then pretty rapidly the last few years.
