I think I’ve mentioned it here before, but I played poker with Woods at one of the LA casinos a while back. He was actually incredibly nice and personable. Even when there were a few jokes about him and his looks - a table wide discussion started when an out of town player said something like “anyone ever tell you that you look like James Woods?”

But poker also has a fairly strong “no politics at the table” rule that in my almost 15 years of play, I’ve seen broken maybe 3 times

One of the funniest things I saw in a thread from a guy who clerked with Judge Stone (who convicted Arpaio) was that Arpaio’s deputies deleted a bunch of emails AFTER being told to preserve them.

If you’re worried about Shariah Law, then you shouldn’t get to demand we need to follow the Bible more. And I worry far more about a Christian theocracy in this country than an Islamic one because A) Far more Christians than Muslims and B) Far more Christians than Muslims in this country (percentage wise) are interested in implementing their religion as state law.

He knows the elf is a pure butt kisser and will do anything to keep his role of turning this country into a police state.

He probably is scared of the general(s). They have real guns and power and maybe even know when to use them.

Plus, I’ve said it before, Trump is a chicken around strong people. If Mattis gets canned it will be the most spineless way to do it (from a distance and by someone else).

Trump’s not going to like his order not being implemented ASAP. Any delay will be seen as a repudiation and shows Mattis as disloyal.

If Mattis were trying to get Trump to do the right thing, he’s going to find himself gone because he didn’t stand up sooner.

Trump values loyalty over all else, and that means any sign of independent thought will be not tolerated.

Checking in from Houston….

We’ve been working at the local shelter all day, as well as acting as a coordination and distribution center for other shelters. We are also a coordination point for citizen rescuers and the National Guard. And feeding everyone; the local restaurants have been amazing.

It’s been a bit busy.

We had 3 volunteers for every family we’re sheltering. There was so much coming in that we just sorted it and sent it right back out to the large shelters at George R. Brown Convention Center and Toyota Center. We’ve been filling trucks, vans, 18-wheelers, anyone that has room. All of the shelters on the West side of Houston had so many volunteers we had to turn people away. We took any and all donations and either used them here or got them right back out into the community.

I have never been so proud to call myself a Houstonian.

For those that want to help, donations to The Red Cross will be very needed. We’ve got the shelters full and all of these people are getting fed and dry and clothed and a safe place to sleep, but they will need help for months. The Red Cross has the ability to operate the long-term shelters.

For everyone that has donated, wished us well, prayed for us, cared…from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. The sun is back out, the rain has stopped, and now we’re going to rebuild.

Mattis’ actions concerning Trumps directive are not surprising. Trump’s guidance directed that no additional trans personnel may enter the service, and none will.

Fuckin’ A. One of the reasons we do chemical inventories periodically is because some relatively harmless compounds break down over time generating peroxides.

I’m going to have to put in a few kudos for Mattis. Trump is like those generals who order you to run your men up the next hill just to see how many return. Sure, you could say no, and if you weren’t shot, would sit in prison while your troops were run up the hill by the first idiot who volunteered. Or you could come up with a plan that would at least attempt to protect them. I think the “wait until the study is complete” portion is what Mattis could get to stall everything. He is the one who told the troops in Jordan to hold the fort while America got through this crazy phase.

Peroxides in high concentrations are no joke. Oxygen-oxygen bonds, outside of O2 gas, are just asking to be “liberated”.

Household hydrogen peroxide is usually no more than 7% solution with water. But put it on a wound (no longer recommended, btw) and watch it fizz away as it decomposes into water and O2 gas.

Industrial H2O2 comes in much higher concentrations, like 60%+. Reactions are considerably more, shall we say, energetic, plus they are exothermic, meaning any nearby combustible materials can burst into flames in an oxygenated atmosphere.

Or to put it another way, explode.

Ah chemistry;

One time in high school, I went to my chemistry class early (it was after lunch, and as an honors student I often came in early to help with lab prep). The teacher intercepted me at the door and cautioned me in the most strenuous terms not to step in, or touch, any of the puddles. After carefully navigating my way around into the classroom, she grabbed a strip of pH paper for a “practical demonstration”. Tearing off a piece, she dropped it in a nearby puddle, and it instantly turned a vivid blue. Apparently, during the previous class period, she’d dropped a chunk of sodium into a 750ml beaker of water, to show off the energetic reaction to the students. She had underestimated the size of the sodium and the energy of the reaction, and the resulting explosion hurled sodium hydroxide solution all over the classroom - thankfully, not on any of the students. We had to spend most of the lab prep time hosing down the front of the classroom with distilled water.

Biblical sexuality?

Let’s take a look at King David.

If he took a fancy to a married woman… he’d kill her husband, kidnap her from the funeral and rape her. Then announce that because he’d fucked her, that meant she was his wife now.

He collected almost a dozen wives that way. I don’t think any of them were happy about it.

More information has come to light. The young man who perished on Capitol Peak on Saturday had never climbed a 14er before, was found with cotton clothing on (big no-no for outdoor sports) and flat-soled skateboard shoes. After summiting after 3:00 p.m. him and his much more experienced partner were running out of water and fatigue was setting in. The young man thought he could take a shortcut back to their camp, ended up falling off a 700 foot cliff. His body was found less than 100 yards from where a couple from Aspen perished just six days prior.

There is one way up and one way down on the northeast ridge of Capitol Peak. Going off route is not an option, and five people have paid with their lives this summer for going off route.

To be honest, it’s the nature of modern theology, for any ancient religion. We have to find acceptable ways to shoehorn the text to fit the times. Some of those methods are more harmonious than others. Holistic, general-principles treatments generally fare better than blunt cherry-picking of passages.

Capitol Peak is in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. They recommend checking in at the trailhead (it’s a box with some paper where you write your name down, the number of people in your party, and how many nights you’re staying in the wilderness) but it’s not required. There’s no ranger to speak of that makes sure parties are equipped for difficult climbs, it’s an honor system.

Yeah. About that.

Bolton makes the case for a four-step campaign that begins with “early, quiet consultations with key players such as the UK, France, Germany, Israel and Saudi Arabia, to tell them we are going to abrogate the deal based on outright violations and other unacceptable Iranian behavior, and seek their input.”

That would be followed by a detailed white paper that includes declassified intelligence explaining why the deal hurts US security interests; a diplomatic campaign against the deal, especially in Europe and the Middle East; and efforts to sway lawmakers and the public to build support.

And just who is going to write anything “detailed” in this WH?

Greetings from the High Plains. I just got home from the VA hospital: My left hand will be in a splint for six months.

My wife just got an E-mail from her brother: He has Internet but no phone where he is. All the roads between his shelter and his home are under water. He says the rain is tapering off in Brazoria County, so now the long clean up in Texas begins. He cannot call his wife in Russia to tell her he is okay, so we will do that for him in a couple hours.

I’m starting to get tired of the stretch of state highway outside of town.

Coming home from the VA hospital, two deer bolted out of the North Platte River three miles from home. Beth shouted; I missed the first and hit the second (slowing down from 60mph/100kph).

My wife and I are fine, but this time the car is severely damaged. The right headlamp assembly is destroyed (we just had that replaced after it was damaged by a pothole in Saskatchewan - the assembly cost $700). The right fender is ripped away from the frame, the air dam below the front of the car is damaged, and the hood is ripped out of the locks. The car cannot be safely driven.

I put in a call to the county sheriff’s office to ensure there was no special report or such to make.

I’ve arranged with someone to get my car on a truck to Peetz, Colorado (just over the state line from Sidney). The Mercedes-Benz dealer will pick up a car for service or repair anywhere in Colorado, and in the past offered loaner cars. I’ll be on the phone to the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Denver in the morning to find out if they still do that.

I’ll also call the insurance company about this, as it should be covered (minus a $1,000 deductible).

This is the second deer I hit in that area. Perhaps I should start spray-painting silhouettes of deer on the side of the car: Three more and I’m an ace.

I’m supposed to go back to the hospital in two weeks: There is no way my car can do that now. Hopefully, we can get it fixed. I have an offer from another person in town to take me to the Cheyenne VA for my next appointment in two weeks if I have no car to drive.

I need a drink or six. Good thing we stopped for booze in Sidney because we can’t get it now.

That was Trump showing who had the power in that relationship. As we’ve noted, he doesn’t do that to Putin, Mattis, or anyone else he’s scared of.

I totaled a Dodge Neon hitting a big ol’ buck running across the interstate when I was 19. I was going about 65 m.p.h. Glass shards ended up in my fists and arms. The roof of the car caved in a few inches.

Glad you’re okay!

Jaysis! I once nearly hit a buck one winter night in Sanpete County, Utah. (All rural, all the time.) Scared the bejesus out of me and I still had about 80 miles to drive to get to Salt Lake City.

Another passing thought about Hannity’s (and other rightwingers’) criticisms of Houston mayor Turner’s no-evacuation order.

Turner made the correct call given the information known at the time.
Just because both Harvey and Ivan were both major hurricanes, the planning strategy was different because one (Ivan) had Houston in the direct storm surge path - which in light of Katrina’s huge (20+ foot) surge, getting everyone out of its path was tantamount. Harvey was a rain/flooding event.

Glad you two are OK! Probably didn’t do your hand any good.

I’ve hit a few deer myself, and know that sickening feeling. And the crunch. Better be careful painting the deer on the doors. You’ll attract ‘em. (See the dog video above, with the bone painted on the bottom of his water bowl!)

With help crews fanning out in flooded Houston I hope they find no additional loss of life and that residents looked after each other. Sad to think there are hundreds of thousands people who now have flood damaged homes, autos, and personal property…and in some cases simply washed away. Businesses of all kinds effectively shut down. Car lots, e.g., with easily 50, 100 or more autos just sitting in water to whatever level. Auto dealerships with new cars in lots waiting to be sold. Harvey has sucked away the personal possessions of so many and robbed them of gainful employment. It’s not hard for me predict a decrease in the Houston population as did that of New Orleans.
Lets see, it was New Orleans to Houston, now where do we go.

I’m glad she called it out. I really don’t see a man carrying a woman and child. I see one person who happens to be a man helping another two who happen to be a woman and child. It wouldn’t be any less meaningful if it had been younger woman helping out a disabled or older man. Walsh can go fuck himself as can those attempting to turn this stranger’s kindness and bravery into justifying their sexism.

Scroll through the replies. In one picture, a woman is part of a trio carrying an older man out in his wheelchair. In another, a female police officer is carrying two children somewhere else.

Joe needs to pay his child support and then go crawl into a wood chipper.

I keep on thinking about the decline of empathy. Made the mistake of reading comments on the story about the guy who called the cops on the people looting hte grocery store. A lot of people defending it. I’m not a fan of looting but it’s food that will go expired eventually anyhow and the people in Houston are in a desperate situation. And then I read about people who think we should shoot looters. Shooting people over property? That just seems barbaric to me. I mean obviously stealing is wrong and is a crime for a reason but ending a life over it? I really think this whole lack of empathy thing is why my one brother and I have found so much common ground even if he’s a bit to my left.

Crikeys!

In my family, I’m known as the Deerslayer. Three separate incidents, two in one year, two within 1/4 mile of each other (not the same pairs). Did $10 damage to a ‘66 Ford station wagon, and 700 1976 dollars to a Citroen DS21. And unknown damage to a rented Pontiac.

The last one was at night. We were driving from Dulles up to Dad’s place. We came over a rise, and I thought Mrs. FBW said, “Dear…”

“What?”

“Dear!”

“WHAT?!”

“DEER!!”

Or better yet, she makes them admit guilt and at the end denies the motion to vacate.

That way he’s still got the conviction, and civil cases against him can still move forward.
