Trump could try to pardon everything and everyone around him. That’d only help him prevent federal prosecutions.
Wont stop anyone at the state level beating up on him with criminal charges, and there’s enough of those to go around. That’s why Mueller’s coordinating efforts with NY AG Schneiderman are so worrying to Trump.
Trump can’t do a damn thing about getting prosecuted in New York. He’s facing the most exposure there too, but it’s by no means the only place. Illinois is another place. Florida’s still another, as is New Jersey.

I think it would be Christie’s ultimate “fuck you”.
re: #6 freetoken
NY is going to have first crack this year, since they’re in position with a Democratic governor, and an AG who’s already taken Trump behind the woodshed. Trump’s facing so many legal fronts he wont be able to keep track. If anything happens in NJ, it’ll likely be after Murphy is elected in November and Christie’s gone in January. So that’s January 2018 - and November midterms would be the earliest Democrats in Congress would have a chance of retaking the House to spark impeachment there- that would come in 2019.
Illinois and Florida both have gubernatorial elections is in 2018. That means they’d be looking at 2019, same as with Congress. The promise/threat of impeachment could turn turnout.
The last GOP Governor of Kentucky, Ernie Fletcher, issued a blanket pardon to everyone for a patronage hiring scandal.

They have lied for most of their lives. They lie to themselves, including about things like religion. They have learned that many powerful and wealthy people like them for lying. They drink champagne and scarf down caviar off their lies. Fox News puts them on TV for hours every day to spread and glorify their lies. You don’t need runways for helicopters. They are landing the rescued people somewhere, you don’t need any bigger space to set up a forward area refueling point. And, it’s less strenuous on the flight crew.

Agree. And it’s why I think the left needs to vocally reject Antifa. If they support the causes the of equality and freedom, their attempts at violence it are hurting the cause. As someone pointed out earlier, though, they don’t seem to be supporting (small d) democratic causes as much as anarchy.
It wouldn’t matter if “the left” staged massive anti-antifa rallies in every city, town, and hamlet in America. The wingnut media and the balance-fairy media would still peddle the equation left=antifa and vice versa.

I respect your hopefulness but just can’t agree. Let me know when they “start shouting black lives matter” at NFL games, NASCAR races, and Trump rallies. The truth is that in America from 1492 to this day, and though I hope not, probably that long into the future, “white discomfort” means only one thing for minorities here, and it is not the rise of a “strong anti-racist ally.”

I mean, at this point (for me, others’ mileage may vary), it’s about actions that I take that I can live with.
Am I comfortable being in a group and/or near a group that would strike first? No. Am I comfortable being in a group and/or in an area where people are attacking unarmed individuals past the point where resistance is being offered in return? No. Are there people who call themselves antifa - and let’s be very clear, this was a term in use well before Trump and there is a reason I distinguish between them and the general protests on the left that have happened since Trump, because words have meaning - who would do both those things? Absolutely.
Others may be more comfortable with violence as the tactic of first resort rather than last. That’s their decision. But I have to live with the decisions I make and the consequences of them.
Are other people going to interpret my decisions according to their own biases and agendas? Probably. But while I can consider that when I’m making them, it doesn’t change the truth of what my decisions mean.

You don’t need runways for helicopters. They are landing the rescued people somewhere, you don’t need any bigger space to set up a forward area refueling point. And, it’s less strenuous on the flight crew.
Yes, my point exactly. But running those Blackhawks continuously is going to be dicey. They may very well lose one or two over the next couple of weeks.
Yesterday when we landed in Austin, there were eight Blackhawks on the pad. I saw at least ten more fly over town from Ft. John Bell Hood to stage at Austin/Bergstrom, today.

Facts
-As the General in charge of the Guantanamo Bay Detention facility, Kelly publicly criticized efforts to close Guantanamo and was accused by Obama Administration officials of working to undermine the President’s efforts to close the facility.
-Opposed and publicly criticized the integration of women into military ground combat units, arguing it would lead to lower standards.
-Defended the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques”, such as waterboarding and rectal feeding. Kelly went on to dismiss the criticisms of human rights groups as “foolishness”.
-Testified in support of an officer caught urinating on talibani corpses.
-Supports the imprisonment of terror suspects without trial.
-Criticized by Amnesty International for his “unsafe and inhumane” treatment of Guantanamo detainees on hunger strike to protest their imprisonment.
-Supports the war on drugs and opposes legalization or decriminalization of any drugs, including marijuana.
-A proponent of border security, Kelly believes that “no wall will work by itself” and has warned about the “existential threat” that unchecked migration poses for the nation.

1. Hell, no.
2. There is no damper on Drumf. He’s proving that, day by day. This is a rare occasion when I actually support heightening the contradictions; but he’s doing that all by himself, therefore on our side the contradictions are best heightened by avoiding low blows, being terribly nice, and simultaneously (in the most gentle tones) calling a fucking lie a lie, and doing so every fucking day. Specifically, Kelly is small fry and let’s not waste the ammunition.
John Kelly is a racist. That’s not an opinion.
re: #167 teleskiguy
John Kelly is a racist. That’s not an opinion.
Agreed. If Trump goes, he goes and good riddance. If Kelly goes, Trump might stay (or not). I want 100% presidential responsibility. I don’t even care if some parts of the blame really belong elsewhere. Anyone may feel free to quote me: Trump must go.
(I think I may have heard that — “Trump must go” — somewhere else. If anyone knows the original source, do please point me to it.)
re: #167 teleskiguy
“Kelly has suggested “expediting” removals by bypassing immigration courts altogether. Since Kelly took over and suggested that ICE expand a program which effectively deputizes local law enforcement officials to enforce federal immigration laws, the program has nearly doubled its number of participating law enforcement agencies. The program, known as 287(g), was abused by former Sheriff Joe Arpaio to racially profile Latinx people in Maricopa County, Arizona; on Monday, ICE announced 18 new “partnerships” with police departments in Texas.
So, despite the respect he has from both parties, Kelly is right at home with Trump. Even more than that, he’s proven himself to be ruthlessly efficient at a time when most of the executive branch is mired in dysfunction.

It wouldn’t matter if “the left” staged massive anti-antifa rallies in every city, town, and hamlet in America. The wingnut media and the balance-fairy media would still peddle the equation left=antifa and vice versa.
that equation allows them to advance their “bad people on both sides” argument, which is vital in denying the fact that fascism and white supremacism are simply anathema to American values, and that any normal American should be anti-fascist and anti-white supremacist.

Yup. A fellow two towns over decided to silently march up and down Broadway in Scottsbluff carrying a protest sign. Alone. Not causing trouble.
That drew fire in the regional paper’s letters section, talking about how “no one is going to listen to the violent left until they cease their violent actions.”
I was unaware that carrying a protest sign was “violent action.” The right wing will draw those arguments regardless of who does what; violent jerks give them good video for their outrage, but a single guy’s photo splashed across the front page of the newspaper carrying a sign will flip the outrage meter to eleven just as well.

Okay, this is weird. We don’t have any Whole Foods Markets anywhere within a couple hundred miles of us, so I can’t verify this.
Whaddya Know? Whole Foods Already Selling “Farm Fresh Amazon Electronics” (Goes to Alternet)
I stopped by the store to see what had changed. In addition to a few discounts — organic apples went from $2.99 to $1.99 per pound — I noticed a big display in the middle of the produce section.
“Farm Fresh,” it read. “Just Picked.”
What agricultural product was this ad for? Amazon Echo — a wireless speaker.
Presumably, Amazon grew the electronic devices on a nearby farm and, once ripe, harvested them off the vine and shipped them to the produce aisle in my local Whole Foods.
(more at Alternet)
The writer goes on to bash other examples of “Farm Fresh” used as a marketing tool, such as wool socks. (Wool comes from sheep, made into socks, sold in a store, voila! Farm fresh socks.)

re: #151 austin_blue
I’m going to call “foul” on this comment. It has no context other than opinion. John Kelly is a decorated Marine warrior who has put himself into a position where he believes he can best serve his country. He probably won’t be successful, but at least he is giving it a go.
Being accused of being a white supremacist? I don’t think name calling is the least of his concerns. Avoiding nuclear war? Yeah, that’s a thing.
Completely disagree. He took the top spot at Homeland Security knowing trump wanted to build the wall. Knowing trump calls Mexicans rapists. You don’t take these positions without being part of the choir.
re: #163 austin_blue
Yes. He was directed to do a job and he did it.
Granted, “Good Nazi” and all that, but it was within the legal capabilities of existing law. So not a “Good Nazi” situation. Who would you rather have trying to put a damper on Drumpf? Sheriff Clarke?
You just quashed your own argument.

As Austin Blue notes, John Kelly is a decorated Marine.
Although it’s anecdotal, in my time in the military, I ran into a whole lot of bigots. (Something about the military is drawn from society in general.)
John Kelly also took the job knowing that Trump had no idea what the nuclear triad is, presumably knew about Trump’s legal cases involving racism and fraud, his calls to lock up political adversaries, &c.
Nope, I don’t give Kelly a pass. He went in eyes wide shut.
re: #125 HappyWarrior
Funny, they loved Charlie Hebdo when they mocked Muslims. FWIW I found both what they did now and then tacky and wrong but what happened two years ago was unquestionably wrong.
Yep. Their hypocrisy is duly noted. I didn’t like CH’s anti-Muslim cartoons and don’t like their Hurricane Harvey cartoon but that’s my problem because they can do as they please. But I’m not a hypocrite about it.

Could an Accountant Take Down Trump? goes to electoral-vote.com
It has been widely reported that Paul Manafort received at least $12.7 million from Ukrainian sources and possibly as much as $100 million. If he received that money, stashed it away in off-shore bank accounts, and failed to file form FinCEN 114, he could be nailed for that crime, much as Al Capone was never convicted or murder and racketeering, but was convicted of tax evasion.
this is why certain people’s (or entity) tax returns need to be handled with care.
a tax return with literally three numbers could take quite some time to actually prepare.
it’s one thing to know how to calculate the right numbers. it’s another to know where to put them.
and it’s a third, much bigger thing to comply with all the disclosures on tax and information returns.
the penalties for perjury, under which a return is signed, can be significant even if the tax is calculated correctly. think:
- contributions
- auto expense or home office disclosures
- and yes, foreign bank accounts, etc.
it’s all those yes/know, check the box questions that can bite back very hard some time down the road
So…..it’s a chilly Friday afternoon here. Watching Kommisar Rex. Seems like a plan.
What’s shown here is the Austro-Italian production of the show.
Lousy job numbers and a skyrocketing unemployment rate under Trump.
(see how easy it is wingnuts?)
Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s threatening to go back down to Texas to promote heeling. He’s gotta grab them by the bootstraps after all.
Seriously though, Trump’s continually lying to the American people about the disaster response and what can and should be done. While Abbott is lying to Trump and saying things are going great, the response on the ground shows that there’s massive issues - like the lack of potable water across much of SE Texas and the greater Houston area. There’s the environmental disaster that will become apparent as the water recedes.
And Trump hasn’t picked anyone to replace Kelly as head of DHS. The federal department responsible for disaster response and domestic security doesn’t have a permanent head since Kelly was taken on as Chief of Staff. You can’t have a truly concerted effort to do disaster relief when you don’t have people in place to do the goddamned work.
Trump and the GOP have steadfast in their intention to devolve federal disaster relief to the states and localities, and we’ve repeatedly seen disasters overwhelm state and local efforts because natural disasters are like that - they’re wide area events that make it impossible for a single state or even a group of states to cope.
If this is Trump’s response with Harvey, just wait til when Irma decides to rear its ugly head and slam into the East Coast. It’s already a Cat 3 with 115 max sustained winds and its pressure is at 968mb; the track takes it towards the East Coast. The track is moving to give a crack at the Carolinas, but the storm strength seems to indicate it remaining a strong Cat 3 or a Cat 4 storm around the time it could make landfall.

None on his staff seems to know basic grammar/spelling/spell check/copyediting or proofreading.
Every week we’ve seen examples of all aspects of this regime screw up on the basics of public pronouncements. Getting names or titles of officials wrong. Identifying wrong countries for foreign officials. Typos.
All of it goes to basic competency, and Trump doesn’t care about any of it.

I don’t have a problem with the Charlie Hebdo cartoon precisely because I know it isn’t true.
This is a liberal Democratic city, the most diverse in the country. Charlie Hebdo doesn’t know that. It’s fine. Lots of people see, “Texas, but not Austin,” and assume that about Houston.
It only stings and angers when it’s true. It’s not true for us and we have more important things to focus on. The people getting into rage are identifying with the cartoon, either as part of their OWN white supremacy or being outraged on our behalf. We don’t need defending. We need homes.
I mean it’s not about the spelling errors in themselves. It’s about being professional. My boss will notice duplicate periods for our small business newsletter. re: #283 HappyWarrior
Copy editing in official government work is critical. Misplaced or misworded documents have serious consequences. When you’re the president, words matter.
An extreme example - but one that is relevant to this day goes to the inclusion of the word “the” in United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 in reference to the withdrawal from land(s) captured during the 1967 Six Day War. If you say the land captured (as French translation indicates), that indicates all the land captured needs to be returned. If you omit the, then you can argue that not all land must be returned.
That a straight talking reactionary know-nothing has problems with basic English and grammar, and requires this much exposition to get to a point shows how much damage he’s doing.

There was a group of us in charge of the Gallery Furniture shelter; I was coordinating all of the volunteers, another person was coordinating with other shelters, another person was in charge of loading trucks, another getting families settled. On Day 2, someone came over and got the Gallery Furniture employees and the people running the shelter. “Go outside. You get first dibs.”

So, how boring is it in Ostrava? What qualifies as newsworthy criminality?
A serial dine-and-dasher.
This is from GoogleTranslate:
Rybníku, La Barca, Uno, U Náhonu, Minerva, U Hrocha. That’s a total of six Opava restaurants that have been robbed by a thirty-four-year-old woman lately. Director-in-Chief of the Opava police spokesman René Černohorský confirmed this.
The case where a blonde woman with two children was ordering meals from restaurants in Opava and never paying her bill, we have already informed you of several times over the past few weeks.
The story of a thief, which started with a photo posted on social networks and was seen by hundreds of people in Opava, has a follow-up.
The con-artist moved to the Frýdek-Místek area, where she visited one of the restaurants in the small town of Čeladná. According to the latest information provided by the police, the woman has a permanent residence in Frýdek-Místek.
In Opava, according to unofficial reports, the woman only stayed temporarily, probably in a residence on Olomouc Street. According to Černohorský, it is important that staff keep an eye on their guests as much as possible.
“If a person is spending an unusually large amount, it is good to see if he has finances. Of course, try to prevent the guest from leaving without paying”, Černohorský advises, adding that in any event, it is a minor civil-law dispute. “Anyway, restaurant staff can call the police. We are able to find out if a person is being sought or if it’s just a one-off”, he explains.
According to him, at present, the offense of this woman is already classified as a crime of petty fraud, and other acts of petty property crimes are being investigated. “We would ask any other victims in this case to turn to their witnesses and give any new information to police officers who are headquartered on Vaškova Square No.10 in Opava or call the non-emergency police telephone number 974 737 651.

I really do but at the same time, my taking issue with speech is free speech as well. Same thing about boycotting. Limbaugh had a right to call Sandra Fluke a slut and boycotters sure as hell had a right to boycott products that were advertised on his show. Free speech has never been “I can say whatever the hell I want and you have to like it.” No, quite the opposite. Say what the hell you want to say but don’t whine like a brat if there’s backlash.

Yes, but the relationship between James I and Georges Villiers would make for a fascinating period piece. It could be done, on British TV most likely, I’d think. Not to say it might not be somewhat controversial, but probably not extremely controversial.

One of the major reason that Roger Stone’s Alexander flopped so disastrously was because it approached his homosexuality in a matter-of-fact way, which is how it was seen and accepted Classic cultures. Americans were somehow not ready to have their ancient history presented to them like that.

Good point; Alexander’s sexuality was certainly common knowledge and in Classical cultures, it wasn’t considered scandalous. That didn’t really happen until Christianity came along.

Well, after three phone calls in rapid succession from people pitching credit cards or other products in the last half-hour, I was ready to blow my top on the next call I got.
Fortunately I didn’t, as it was the insurance adjuster calling about my car wreck.
After I filled him in on the shop in Sterling, Colo. that has our car, the company that towed it for us, and gave him the information about all the hoops I jumped through (including that no Nebraska Panhandle shop will work on a Smart), he said the insurance company will arrange today with a car rental agency in Scottsbluff to rent us a car. (We have to arrange for them either to deliver it to us at our expense if they charge for that, or find someone to take us sixty miles to get it.)
I probably didn’t come off very well over the phone being loopy over pain meds. (It seems my surgery incision was injured in the wreck, and it continues to open up.)

I read a book by a retired Anglican Bishop that made a convincing point that St. Paul was a repressed, self-loathing homosexual.
St. Augustine was hetero, but also terribly repressed and traumatized by his father calling attention to his boner in the public baths an a ten-year-old.
These are jut some of the Fathers of the Church who laid the foundation for centuries of neuroses and repression, both social and psychological.

Was just reading a review of a book on the subject in the New Yorker…I had read in other sources that he believed that Adam, in his state of grace before the Fall, was able to raise and lower his penis just as he could and other limb of his body: it was the uncontrolled nature of sexual arousal that Augustine found sinful…and that, in a nutshell, is what is behind all the absurdities and pruderies of Christianity, from monastic abstinence and the cult of virginity to abstinence-only instruction in the schools…

George Soros may not personally care, but if wingnuts can endlessly slander and libel him with no consequences, it makes it a whole lot easier for them to do the same to one of us that does not have the means to defend ourselves.

The report was filed as part of a risk-management plan required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Remember how I told you that the Brazos River was going to crest on Wednesday morning and that’s when I’d know if I was going to flood or not? Then it became Thursday afternoon, then early Friday morning. I was too tired to wait it out so when my feet hit a dry floor this morning, I started singing the Hallelujah Chorus using my bedside table as drums. Scared the crap outta Bubba, who assumed I was in labor or something.
Then I checked the local police department to see how high the river got when it crested.
Damn.
The river, they are saying, now won’t crest until [Sunday, September 2].
So, the way I see it, this is Texas so we are bound to have a drought before the river crests so I’m just holding out for it.

BBs I know seriously complaining about Kamala Harris co-sponsoring legislation with Sanders. I fucking hate their shit. They really do want a narrative of Sanders versus everyone else. Stop it, just stop it already and stop attacking everyone who doesn’t see things your way as not being real liberals or Democrats when your guy doesn’t even see himself as a liberal or a Democrat.
There is no reason to believe Russia just packed up when the election was done.
As I am not on Twitter or Facebook, nor know any Sanders supporter here who did not go all-in with Clinton on Election Day, I can’t speak to the issue of so-called Bernie Bros directly, but I do wonder how many of them are committed to Sanders as if he is a cult leader, and how many of them are really Russian rodent copulators.

Yikes. That circle comes pretty close to my brother-in-law’s home. He’s already dealing with all the flood damage; the idea he might have to consider leaving again over chemical contamination if the wind blows the wrong way probably isn’t helping him (or a million other people in that circle).

From one to another. But props Geraldo I guess?
When Fox people start mocking Fox News popular guests like D’Souza it can’t be any clearer that the network isn’t a serious news agency. In a way Geraldo’s comment proves they know it is all a big joke.

re: #406 Anymouse 🌹
The repair shop in Sterling just called me. They told me they’ve already talked to my insurance company in Scottsbluff, which approved the repair (that was kind of them).
They also told me they already have the Smart stripped down and ready to install the new parts when they get them. They ordered all the parts from the same dealer we bought the car from and have all our maintenance done. (I still don’t understand why the dealership punted on the repair in the first place, but that means the Mercedes dealer isn’t getting the labour charge, the shop in Sterling is.)
Apparently the car will only be laid up for a week or so.
A lot of dealers no longer do body/frame work. It takes too much modern equipment and technicians that are body specialists, etc.

If you aren’t following the ‘Our Revolution’ movement on Twitter, I’ll be honest, I think you’re missing a whole lot of the picture in regards to Bernie’s surrogates and supporters and how they are behaving post election. And this is a wholly different thing from the RUS bot networks and folks with questionable political evolutions. There may be a few rateffers, but that is not what is driving this Bernie movement in my estimation.
Even though you’re not “on” Twitter, it would still be easy enough for you to check it all out like you’ve done with other Twitter content in the past. But we’ve gone around that one here repeatedly so I know you already know this.

Sorry, to explain: Trump just said he’ll be proclaiming next Sunday as a national day of prayer or something “because we need and deserve it.”

I wonder if he’s consistent enough to support a new Prohibition, because I can’t figure any definition of “drugs” that includes weed but doesn’t include alcohol.
And that existential threat bullshit does actually sound pretty white supremacisty.

Trump came up with the idea of praying on Sunday himself. No one has done that before. He’s a genius.

The other day I wrote of the flooding in India from the extra heavy monsoon rains, and the collapse of a building that killed 12.
But that story doesn’t even broach the magnitude of the problem:
1,200 Dead from Monsoon Rains in Bangladesh, India, Nepal
Around 41 million people have been affected by flooding and landslides.
According to the United Nations, around 41 million people have been affected by flooding and landslides that have ensued due to the monsoon across the subcontinent. They issued this estimation on August 24, which was before the brunt of the rains slammed Mumbai, India’s financial capital. As of Thursday, the rain and flooding is affecting Karachi, Pakistan’s most populous city, local sources have confirmed to weather.com. Eight people are cofirmed dead thus far as a direct result of the flooding.
[…]
The floods damaged 18,000 schools across the entire south Asia, which in turn has left approximately 1.8 million children unable to attend indefinitely.

My wife makes corn babies. Just stick it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and it stays nice and warm for a surprisingly long time. They’re $20 if you want one (shameless plug).

Hey, Happy. Yesterday I met a Slovenian. He’s passing through town on his bike (happens a lot around here) and when I saw his loaded vehicle (bike) I took pity and unlocked the door (I’m closed Thursdays, usually). I did not have the exact tube he wanted (cyclists are so particular) but we chatted for a while. At one point, he said he had a month remaining on his visa (he reaches his touring goal this week) and I asked him where he was going home to after that. When he told me ‘Slovenia’, I told him my grandmother was born there and I named the village. He said he wasn’t from there, but had been there, on a bike ride. He was so amazed to find such a connection at almost the end of his trip. We talked about Jure Robic (he pronounced the surname row-bitch) and he said there are many crazy Slovenians like Jure. I refrained from telling him about MY crazy relatives.
This does not count as a ‘CL’ because it was my computer’s fault it took so long.

No we don’t. As Madalyn Murray O’Hair noted: Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.
