Lyrics
When I’m all alone on my own by my lonesome
And there ain’t a single ‘nother soul around
I wanna dig into my guitar bend a blues riff that hangs
Over everything

When I’m by myself and it’s daytime cuz down-under
Or wherever it is I live when it’s evening
You know I speed-read the morning news and come up with my own little song also
…too

When I step outside to a beautiful morning
Where the trees are all waggin’, my hair-flag waving
The scenery ragin’, my life/love cascading, and the smog hangs
Over everything

When I’m outside in a real good mood
You could almost forget bout all the other things
Like a big old ominous cloud in my periphery

Don’t wanna talk about it
Simultaneous I shout it

When I was young I liked to hear music blarin’
And I wasnt carin to neuter my jams with earplugs
But these days I inhabitate a high-pitched ring over things
So these days I plug em up

When I’m strugglin with my songs I do the same thing too
And then I crunch em up in headphones, cause why wouldnt you?
You could say I hear you on several levels at high decibels
Over everything

When I’m all alone on my own by myself
And there and another single one around I wanna dig into my guitar, bend a blues riff that hangs…
Over everything

Nice dreamy tune. Love the cascading guitars.

And the lyrics are great as usual with Courtney.

The video of Trump at the shelter “serving” meals to storm victims. It’s so obvious he’s being forced to be there. And slowing everything down. Those volunteers/rescue people clearly do NOT want him there. The man is incapable of interacting genuinely with regular people in any sort of positive, meaningful way.

Not sure that’s a quote from Melania, it may be from Amy Holmes (no relation).

We have to take seriously the possibility that tr*mp will start a nuclear war because of his irritation at having to do the Harvey photo ops.

That says much about tr*mp, his administration and the Republican party, none of which is good.

Some people appreciate a business-like attitude. I’m closed today (not very business-like) and a guy rattled my front door. I opened the front door and asked, ‘Do you want to buy a bike?’ (A little too business-like, I thought.) He said, ‘Can I look at this more?’ I let him in, he was admiring the one closest to the door, I spoke about it in a very business-like manner (‘It’s a consignment, so I can’t mess around with the price’ ‘It’s cheaper then the ones like it on ebay.’) He was less than business-like when he said, ‘I know!’ Then he said where in Arizona he was driving back to, and that he doesn’t have room, and I figured out, ‘You mean, you don’t have room in your car, but once you get there you have room’. He laughed (there’s a whole lot of room where he’s going) and asked if he could buy it and leave it for later pick up. I was very accommodating of that idea, and he was very accommodating of my ‘no payments on plastic’ policy, and the bike now has his name on it.

Heh, here’s one. We’ve all heard of Clarke’s Law, after Arthur C. Clarke, which variously reads as: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I borrowed this from another Internet forum, and because so many right-wingers seem to be virtual Luddites, I thought y’all would appreciate it.

Clarke’s Third Law also works in reverse: to a sufficiently backward person, *any* technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I can’t remember all of the ol’ math terms…but I always like the simple method of cross multiply 3,000,000 x 100 then divide by 130,000,000 to find “X”

130,000,000 100(%)
____________ ____
3,000,000 X

Anyone remember what this is called???

Regarding the “stranded Pakistanis” reference, it was about Urdu-speaking Bihari Muslims who sided with West Pakistan during the 1971 war which lead to East Pakistan becoming Bangladesh.

In spite of their loyalty, Pakistan refused to repatriate them simply because they were an ugly reminder of the country’s bloody breakup into two.

Why do so many people assume that Buddhism has a peaceful history and that Buddhists are not capable of fanaticism?

It comes from the same smug ignorance Americans were content with after 9-11-01, causing them to blame Muslims for everything. To them (‘us’, sorry to say) religion is simple. There’s Christianity, and ‘Judaeo-Christians’, and then there are the heathens, who are to blame.

Just as in our founding documents, among the self-evident truths were the men who had to secure their rights, and there were also merciless Indian Savages who were excited against them by the king.

In their ignorance, Americans have accepted Buddhists as peaceful, because meditation and slogans and stuff.

We can learn, but sometimes it takes so long, and some blood.

American Buddhism tends to favor the pacifist, serene side of Buddhism, while ignoring the nationalist, sectarian side of Buddhism in the “old country.” There are as many sectarian differences among Buddhists as there are among Christians, and those differences have at times become quite violent.

Besides, what about the Shaolin monk stuff? Not exactly peaceful and serene when they beat the crap out of someone.

I felt for the misconception when I had my own doubts about Islam in high school (this was pre-9/11 when I was a sophomore in HS in late 1999) and felt that Buddhism was not scarred from violence as the Abrahamic faiths were throughout their history. Of course, many years later I would realize that Buddhism is also not immune from violence in its history either.

And if they are, then they should be raising all sorts of hell about it because their “brothers” tried to cover up two blatant violations of the law with their one of their own as the designated fall guy.

Apologies if this has been posted else where, but this administration has no shame

Signaling potential roadblocks to federal help for Texas, the Trump administration said Sunday that it wants Congress to attach aid for victims of Hurricane Harvey to a bill that would increase the federal debt limit. That puts the White House on a collision course with House conservatives who oppose raising the debt limit and want the Harvey money treated as a separate issue.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on “Fox News Sunday” that if the debt ceiling is not raised, funding to help Texas recover from the hurricane could be delayed.

“Our first priority is to make sure that the state gets money, it is critical, and to do that we need to make sure we raise the debt limit,” he said. “Without raising the debt limit, I’m not comfortable that we will get the money that we need this month to Texas to rebuild.”

I have been thinking about the impact of California regulations as compared to Texas. Day to day California is a lot safer by way of zoning, strict regimes like CUPA to keep shops safe and in compliance.

Five feet of water and wind, no roof, questionable walls, no electricity? Our place would be a toxic maelstorm. With added lose gas tanks and oxygen tanks. OI don’t think you can make a practical shop to be safe if evacuated and flooded like that for days on end. How would one even start? We get inspected regularly, almost never a violation.

The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood added 51 people to its public list of signatories and signers of the “Nashville Statement.” I’ve added them to my spreadsheet here:

drive.google.com

If you thought adding 51 people to the previous total of 194 would improve the white male ratio, you’d be wrong. In fact, it’s up from 80 percent to 81 percent.

But the most important fact to come out of this is the addition of 32 people who are heads of “family” organizations. For example, we have Cathi Herrod, of the Center for Arizona Policy. She a signer and she goes down to the legislature whenever it’s in session to lobby for whatever retrogressive legislation she has in mind. These are the people who are in favor of so-called “bathroom bills” for example. So the so-called “Nashville Statement” is not merely designed to be a religious line in the sand, it’s also designed as a tool for politics.

Is there a way to put up a data set, like this spreadsheet, on a website so that it looks better, people can search it easily, and can break it down by sex, race, what organization these guys are with? Any ideas are helpful.

Well, the first step is to just drop this fantasy that there is any way we can put the genie back in the bottle. North Korea is now a nuclear nation and there is no way to reverse that. And due to the location of said nation, there are not a lot of options for testing MRBMs and ICBMs that won’t fly through somebody’s air space and send them into a tizzy.

China is looking at the reality that if the Kim dynasty collapses, NK becomes a ticking time bomb that will unleash a human wave of millions heading for the nearest exit. We’re not talking the peaceful reunification of East and West Germany or the quiet dissolution of the USSR. We’re talking millions of peasants who will un-ass and head for greener pastures.

NK is essentially an insoluble problem for everybody. Perhaps it’s best to just accept them as the New Kid On The Block. Nothing else we’ve done works.

There are limits to the utility of seeing your enemies as suicidal madmen bent on your destruction, rather than as ruthless, though eccentric, people determined to keep power and the benefits that go with it by any means possible.

Why is the status quo or disaster the only two possibilities? If I were running China, I’d order the Kims to gradually reform NK to make it a functioning state. If the Kims refused to play ball, their great leaders would get assassinated one by one until someone got the message.

So China has to be charged with wanting this dumpster fire of a regime to continue, most likely because it gives the US a chance to bungle away most/all of its international prestige and soft power.

Fine, we charge China with continuing to support the Kim dynasty because of self-interest. But let’s not bullshit ourselves here, China would not be the only destination of the peasant hordes. There are many who would take their chances in the DMZ if they thought they stood a chance of making it to Seoul.

Zeus’ guardian, Matt, was murdered and now Zeus is missing. Please….share this coast to coast, especially on the west coast. Thank you so much.

I feel this post is very important & I’m hoping the entire FedEx family nationwide can help the Schoshke’s find Matt’s dog.

Matt was a city driver at SLN, Kansas & was senselessly murdered when he returned home. Matt’s beloved dog (Zeus) hasn’t been seen since. It’s believed the criminal took the dog along with the truck. The truck was located in California & suspect arrested. BUT, no dog. It’s believed Zeus is still alive.

Let’s help the family bring home a part of Matt. Please share coast to coast & bring some peace to the Schoshke family.

Especially the Los Angeles vicinity!

OT (if there is one):

Wonkette’s “Dear Shit fer Brains” (their deleted comments) article today had an E-mail from someone incensed over their article on Chuck C. Johnson arranging the meeting with Julian Assange (or so he claimed anyway).

Guy insisted Chuck would sue Wonkette, referring to him as “Charles Johnson.”

What he seemed most butthurt about a statement saying that Chuck raises money for Nazis.

Doktor Zoom was amused, since the truth is an absolute defence against libel, and they also corrected the record that it’s Chuck the guy is talking about and not our esteemed host.

Apparently Mr. Winey was upset at Wonkette’s libels of Award-Winning Journalist Chuck C. Johnson in this piece about the weird meeting Johnson arranged between Julian Assange and California Republican Dana Rohrabacher. (Mr. Winey didn’t specify what article he was unhappy with, but that’s the most prominent one about Johnson. And we’ll assume we haven’t somehow defamed the other Charles Johnson, proprietor of Little Green Footballs and a Friend of Wonkette)

Deleted E-mail: You Have the Vocabulary and Intellect of a Middle School Paint Huffer (goes to Wonkette)

The writer also seemed to think that it would be a snappy insult to compare Wonkette to Mad Magazine.

Here too: my Senators are Schumer and Gillibrand, my Rep. is Carolyn Maloney: good Democrats all, and likely to do what they can to stand up to prejudicial pogroms like this.

However, the problem isn’t with blue-state elected officials, but with the ones who might not only do little (outside of maybe publishing a few “concerned and dismayed” Op-Eds) to impede Trump’s mass-deportation plans, but actually cheer it on, and do their best to put it into action. Because “jobs” or “economic anxiety” or “rule of law”….

Joel Olsteen passed the collection plate to the hurricane victims now sheltering in his church and lost their property. He is getting dragged on social media again.

There was a discussion here earlier about taxing churches, and someone objected “well, my little church would be hurt by such a thing when it does do good works.”

I never saw the obvious solution to that posted here: Take away the special privilege of churches to hide their books, unlike every charity in the nation.

If a church is doing social good through charitable works (something like the Bible says repeatedly), that should be reflected in the books. File your damn Form 990.

The point of the tax exemption for churches is they allegedly do good things that sometimes government is not in a position to do.

Make them prove it. Just like every other charity.

They had the votes to make immigration reform happen and killed it through refusing to put the bill to a vote. But they put a bill to strip healthcare from millions to a vote and magically passed it. Why? Because unlike the former, they knew the latter would never get Obama’s signature or be in any danger of attaining the votes to override his veto.

One big problem with this is that McConnell is likely to use his taxes & revenue reconciliation topics up in trying to pass tax reform, which means that any immigration reform bill need to survive a filibuster from far right Republicans. Then it also probably will have to pass the Republican House and then override a veto.

So no matter what Trump and the GOP are going to own this.

bbc.com

Later, I used an intermediary to pass some questions to active duty CIA officers dealing with the case file - they would not speak to me directly. I got a message back that there was “more than one tape”, “audio and video”, on “more than one date”, in “more than one place” - in the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow and also in St Petersburg - and that the material was “of a sexual nature”.

It talks about many more compromising things than tapes in St. Petersburg however - such as trying to get business deals, Russian banks, &c.

re: #224 scottslemmons

Republicans should really look up Pete Wilson and Prop 187 if they think this’ll end well for them.

So? Prop 187 passed by a 59-41 margin: its anti-“illegals” provisions were fairly popular (according to polling) over a wide cross-section of the voters. It was only struck down, as usual with so many of California’s ballot initiatives, in Federal court - on jurisdictional issues (a state can’t impinge on immigration rules - that’s a Federal matter), not on its prejudicial implications. And it only died after a new (Dem) governor decided to give up on appealing it five years later. And was only “repealed” in 2014 - twenty years later.

Prop 187 may have led to the eclipse of the GOP in California (not beforetime and a good thing in general) - but the effect was spread out over a number of years, and confined to one state. I’m sure we’d all like to think that blatantly prejudicial legislative actions will eventually blow back (negatively) on their authors: but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting.

More from that BBC article:

bbc.com

Last April, the CIA director was shown intelligence that worried him. It was - allegedly - a tape recording of a conversation about money from the Kremlin going into the US presidential campaign.

It was passed to the US by an intelligence agency of one of the Baltic States. The CIA cannot act domestically against American citizens so a joint counter-intelligence taskforce was created.

The taskforce included six agencies or departments of government. Dealing with the domestic, US, side of the inquiry, were the FBI, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Justice. For the foreign and intelligence aspects of the investigation, there were another three agencies: the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the National Security Agency, responsible for electronic spying.

Lawyers from the National Security Division in the Department of Justice then drew up an application. They took it to the secret US court that deals with intelligence, the Fisa court, named after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. They wanted permission to intercept the electronic records from two Russian banks.

Their first application, in June, was rejected outright by the judge. They returned with a more narrowly drawn order in July and were rejected again. Finally, before a new judge, the order was granted, on 15 October, three weeks before election day.

While it is still too far away to make a definitive prediction, the further west Irma travels the harder it becomes to miss the continental USA.

Irma is expected to travel west by south at least another day.

I didn’t hear about this story:

On Monday afternoon, senior reporter Alan Butterfield and photojournalist Ruaridh Connellan from the website dailymail.com chanced upon five volunteer rescuers preparing to motor a small boat through Greens Bayou near Interstate 10 in east Houston to try to rescue an elderly wheelchair-bound resident. The reporters asked to tag along, the volunteer rescuers agreed, and the team of seven headed out around 3 p.m.

Within minutes, the powerful currents were dragging the tiny vessel toward downed power lines 20 feet away in a swampy offshoot of Houston’s overflowing Buffalo Bayou.

The reporters and several civilian rescuers leapt from the boat into the water as it barreled toward downed power lines and exploded.

“I felt the shock go through my body and I heard the noise and then it was just like a battle for your life,” Butterfield told ABC News from Houston’s Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital Thursday, perched in a chair beside his bed-ridden colleague.

“The boat hit the powerlines, shocked everyone, rebounded back toward me and [then] I remember seeing the black smoke billowing out of the boat.”

The last thing Butterfield remembers seeing before he was swept into the powerful currents was the body of one of the civilian rescuers — the only one on the boat with a life vest.

“He was floating and he looked unconscious and there were bubbles coming out of his mouth and … I looked up again and the guy was gone. The current had swept him away.”

In your timeline is that stupid meme map of how many counties Trump won again.

While square miles do matter (in the sense of the Electoral College), there is a difference between my county (deeply Republican, 3,000 people) and Los Angeles County (deeply Democratic, 9.6 M people).

Outside of the National Popular Vote Compact, I don’t see a way around the Electoral College (other than actually running candidates everywhere). The EC isn’t going to get repealed.

Dems keep chalking up wins in special elections though. One I didn’t see commented on was four days ago, Fairfax County VA School Board, where the Democratic candidate easily defeated her Republican challenger, nearly 3-1.

The seat was open due to a resignation - that occurred apparently to knowing historically liberals fail to turn out for special elections.

patch.com

Dems keep flipping what were GOP seats in special elections. We can hope that carries over into the General Elections this year in VA and NJ, and next year for the Feds.

My brother-in-law writes from the Houston area - he is back at his house (though his wife is still in Russia unable to return). He is a teacher and notes over half his students are homeless now:

Back at home now. Have been busy with friends ripping out carpet, insulation and walls and spraying everything with bleach.

I have a giant rubble pile out in front of my house of furniture and building materials, but I have a roof, the exterior walls are mostly all tight and the electric and even cable are working. Best of all, a friend called in some favors and brought over some building materials (dry wall and insulation) so that we can start rebuilding when the house finishes drying out.

The hardware stores are back ordered on drywall for 5 months since the manufacturers were not planning on a sudden need for rebuilding a quarter million homes and businesses… its an amazing amount of repair work.

The good news is that anybody who can swing a hammer chould be able to find all the work they want down here for months. The plan is for the reconstruction to start next Saturday. I am going to apply for FEMA help today since I didn’t have flood insurance considering that my house was built up so high. IF I get it, it will help but if not I am still not going to complain too much since a lot of people are in worse situations than me.

I got the cars working again correctly and even got the flooded tractor engine working again…they are a lot harder to kill than cars apparently. The push lawn mower and a chain saw bought it but that’s not so bad.

I currently have two neighbors hooked into my water well system since their wells failed.

My next door neighbor was trying to clean up debris and accidently cut off his toe so he went to the hospital in an ambulance yesterday but is going to be just fine and one of my helpers put a nail completely thru his foot… needless to say he got a tetanus shot and antibiotics and is off his feet for a couple days. Its hard to believe its only been a week.

School will resume for kids Wednesday but for teachers Tuesday. Over half of my students are homeless at the moment since the west side of the county is still under water and those river floods are getting worse. Our school is being used as a shelter and FEMA staging area. National guard are camped out inside the high school so they have a place to cook and sleep and bath.

If you have not bought a full tank of gas you should do so, the prices are going to go significantly higher nationwide before the supply gets back to normal.

I’m just surprised that Donald Trump didn’t end DACA on November 9 and direct ICE to start doing the roundups of the immigrants all at once.

How does one say ‘Kristallnacht’ in Spanish, anyway? Because this is exactly what is going to happen if this decree isn’t halted.

I searched the BBC: The article cited is here.
bbc.com

It talks about many more compromising things than tapes in St. Petersburg however - such as trying to get business deals, Russian banks, &c.

So when are these tapes going to be released?

Anymouse 🌹  Sep 3, 2017 • 8:39:50pm

re: #316 sagehen

So when are these tapes going to be released?

The article doesn’t say that. Presumably they are with the dossier. As such, perhaps Mr. Mueller has them as part of his investigation.

If they release them, perhaps it will be to Pornhub. (That would be epic trolling.)

The good news is that anybody who can swing a hammer should be able to find all the work they want down here for months.

And I wonder (as I have been since I first heard that Harvey was going to do major damage in Texas) whether a shortage of hammer-swingers is going to impede reconstruction work in the affected areas: it’s always been a truism in the construction trades in a lot of areas in this country that the grunt work is normally done by guys with - shall we say “dubious” immigration status. New York is certainly one: I doubt whether the work crews on our last three apartment renovations (respectively Irish, Slavic [Serbian?] and Latino [Salvadoran?]) could muster three legitimate Green Cards between all of them.

I like Twitter but lately I’ve been thinking of bailing. So much toxicity.
I first joined for the yucks, most of my early follows were accounts from Weird Twitter. Holy shit. Turns out alot of the funnier accounts are run by passive-aggressive bullshit artists who actively think that liberals are literally Nazi sympathisers.
That ‘centrist’ in a trashcan take from Maplecocaine shared the other day? He means liberally-minded people.
Rose Twitter is a cesspool. We agree on virtually everything but you wouldn’t know it.

Anyways, rant over. Thanks for indulging me :)

Listen, there’s not much to hope for with a hateful white supremacist in office. But..

The forethought of naming the children of undocumented parents ‘Dreamers’ was a genius PR strategy.

We’re going to hear dreamers, dreamers, dreamers over the airwaves for months.

That simple description will influence public reaction.

They are protected by Twitter, however, unless you have enough followers that leaving will cost them money.

And since it isn’t targeted at a specific person, reporting to the police won’t help much.

We’ve successfully had folks banned for the same type of threat. There is a category in the reporting mechanism for hate aimed at a group. Just an FYI, definitely not a pass for Twitter and their dubious model.

For once in his whiny, sycophantic life, please let Lindsey Graham follow through—

He and Dick Durbin re-introduced a DREAM Act in July, and Graham said:

“So to President Trump, you’re going to have to make a decision,” Graham said. “The campaign is over. To the Republican Party, who are we? What do we believe? The moment of reckoning is coming. When they write the history of these times, I’m going to be with these kids.”

He’ll be hearing from me first thing tomorrow.
