Maggie is resting on her laurels, I think. Checking her background, she’s worked for the New York Post, the NY Daily News, Politico and CNN, before joining the Times staff in 2015. Maybe deep down inside, she figures she’s reached the pinnacle of her career, so might as well enjoy the attention and access she has as WH correspondent. As a reader, I find her coverage shallow and very often naive — quite surprising for someone who’s been on the New York politics beat for so long.

Let me check out her CV a bit more because I want to fight my first assumption that she may not have any hard news background given that combination of outlets. My first thought was gossipy and that might not be fair.

I find it hilarious reading all the furrowed brow Trumpists opposing DACA based on “rule of law” when they were OK with pardoning Arpaio.

Arpaio is an actual criminal - who perverted the badge he wore - and Trump pardoned him before he served a day in prison.

The Trump supporters actually believe Arpaio is the good guy; they accept Trump’s characterization of him. They are indeed the deplorables that Hillary denounced.

Yes! I sure remember when there were actual Liberal Republicans. But they were all purged.

When the Republican party incorporated the Dixiecrats into their base, they abandoned the liberals who were part of their party. Michael Bloomberg did become mayor of New York as a Republican but it would be had to find anyone close to his views who are still Republican. Certainly Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski are among the few who can be considered moderate Republicans in modern terms.

trump punted ‘doing something’ to congress while signaling his base that *he* did something

if they actually do pass a non-veto proof daca law, it’s back in his lap and he’ll own whichever way he goes then

these are the absolutely lowest hanging fruit available so he can say ‘we did something’ about ‘immigration.

they self reported - theyre easy to find

but optically they are the worst group to target - educated, productive, payers in

they are not dangerous, terrorists, ‘the rapists or bad hombres’

and if you think it’s gonna lead to identifying the rest of their families, who likely are also productive, payers in, the optics get even worse. they still have asset and property rights

they’re all gonna voluntarily leave? just the daca’s? or the whole families? nope, youre gonna have to use force of law, actual force.

you’re gonna round up whole families while the “real” terrorists are roaming around free just because they are harder to identify and find?

you expatriate a million, or even two million people like this who are no threat and yet you have done nothing to make america safer

That’s really the problem, they accept whatever Trump says or does because they buy in that he isn’t a DC insider and is what they need. So they don’t check how any of this works and will work against them.

I’m pretty skeptical of far everyone. How do you get all the way over there anyway? Left or right? Far fundamentalist Christian? Extreme beliefs host fertile ground for those who would be violent for the cause, or will take on the cause as fans of violence. Dangerous territory. Some of this is discussed in Gift of Fear, that book I bring up at times like this.

58
The Ghost of a Flea  Sep 4, 2017 • 12:48:05pm

re: #39 goddamnedfrank

Politics is the art of the possible. The utility of your understanding of what ought to be is only as good as your perception of what is, and making a plan. What you believe in matters, but it’s how you perceive the road plan…and the incremental changes…that actually makes changes in policy, and thus the world.

If you think all options are equally bad, your perception is shit and you don’t actually have a plan of any type, because there’s always small details that matter. If you insist there’s really no differences between the choices, it’s shallowness and cynicism on a scale greater than that of the calculating voter. This goes doubly for the smug goblins who make a living being contrarian and “pure” full-time.

If your “plan” involves everything getting worse so that people will finally do what you think they should, your plan is shit, but also compassionless. There are no teleological imperatives…when things go bad, there is no “must” that people will align with.

And if you’re one of those people who’s built a retaliation fantasy into the side of your utopia…you’re a shitty person and the exact reason that heads on pikes is a constant of human existence regardless of the abstract flibbertigibbet used as justification. Brecht wrote that the means defile the ends…but I’d venture further that grotesque means overwrite the putative noble ends, because it’s always easier to find another neck to stretch than to admit your plan is shit.

It certainly does. Those of us old enough to remember 2000 remember well the ratfucking that Naderites did to Gore’s campaign, the assurances the day after being the exact same as from the Berners: “Dubya will be such a failure, he’ll get nothing done and America will be ready for a ‘true progressive’ in four years.” 4 years, two wars, and two sets of tax cuts later, the same fuckers would not budge from their insistence that whoever ran for the DNC had to be to the left of Trotsky to earn their vote.

Klys! How was the Scottish Festival? Are you all dehydrated? Only a raisin of your former self? I thought about you and Mr. klys in 110 degrees while hiding out from 107 here on the other side of the Bay.

It was 110 in the shade. Easily. Like, we had a thermometer up in the harp booth (in the shade) and it read that on Saturday. Sunday was slightly better, only like 106ish? But Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon were both absolutely brutal. I have a photo that I texted to mr. klys where I was just covered in sweat, like I’d just run a 5k …except that was just me sitting in the trailer trying to hide from the sun.

But the games went on. I heard there were only two heat related incidents among the athletes, and one possible heat-contributed one. Probably some more among the visitors as well. The crowds were WAY down, unsurprisingly. The vendor halls were at least air conditioned so there was a chance to get out of the heat occasionally. The harps hated it. First performance of the weekend and someone had a string snap. I just tuned mine down after that (since I wasn’t performing again anyway) and hid it in its case.

Still, yesterday I got to see one of the best caber throws I think I’ve ever seen. Huge respect for all the athletes out there competing. And the bands. And the folks working the food booths, who were hot and in the sun and not making the kind of money to make it worth that.

The rest of today is mostly aimed at recovery though.

Speaking in the capital Naypyitaw, he said the army was pursuing its patriotic duty to preserve Myanmar’s borders and prevent Rohingya insurgents carving out their own territory in northern Rakhine State. He referred to communal violence in the area in 1942, when ethnic Rohingya who sided with the retreating British forces clashed with local ethnic-Rakhine Buddhists, who aligned themselves with the Japanese. Tens of thousands of people died in a failed attempt to create a Rohingya state.

A few years ago I got an out of normal range result on an unusual blood test. When I Googled it, the first thing that came up was using it post mortem to check for anaphylactic shock. doc took an xray once and told me my heart was enlarged. i’d need an ultrasound in a few days.

i went home. sat on the couch and didnt move for two days afraid any excitement or anxiety and ‘pop’. though he never said anything about what to do nor not. i had some silly idea what it was.

they did the ultrasound. not enlarged. just sort of closer to the center of the chest, not off-center where it normally is. apparently it’s always been there and never been a problem in any way

explains a lot about me - my heart’s just never in the right place

Time to get a dessert together for dinner with friends this evening. The chocolate shortcake is done, though a bit on the crumbly side. It’s gluten free and maybe I should have gone with a speck more xanthan gum, but it won’t hurt anything because it will be smothered in strawberries and whipped cream with a chocolate shaving garnish.
Off to get the berries prepped and the cream whipped.

We’ve already been doing “generic” hurricane prep, will make a go/stay decision very early. This is the first year we’ve had Wife’s camping trailer, so we’re integrating it into the plan. I was hoping it would turn earlier and ride north along the Bermuda High and not make landfall at all (or, at worst, not strengthen any more if it were to make landfall, preferably well away from Florida and those areas already hit by Harvey), because I made plans a month and a half ago for my brother, my mom, and I to spend a few days in PCB next week.

The closer Irma gets and the more the various computer models are tightening up, I think we’re not only likely going to have to scrub the trip, but we may wind up taking a direct hit here in Nashville from her remnants after landfall.

It’s looking to suck for me, but that’s minor compared to what other Lizards in the projected path will have to put up with.

I don’t think anyone can deny Kelsey Grammer is conservative or talented for better or worse…

Going to Pensacola for the weekend for Emerald Coast Brewfest. May be chased by Irma on the way back to Birmingham.

The way it’s tracking, I’ll likely not even get that far; I’m giving myself until Saturday night-Sunday morning to make a go/no-go decision on it, because by that time, it’ll be fairly obvious where Irma will make landfall if it’s going to hit CONUS.

And while he may have set some kind of record for playing Fraser Crane for close to two decades, he has range. I mean compare the pompous ass (to say the least) he plays in Pentagon Wars to the much more free wheeling sub commander in Down Parascope.

While Grammer’s a conservative with his own personal issues (particularly with booze and coke), he at least seems like he has some clue to what empathy is, unlike many of his fellow conservative actors.

I just said he had a clue, because he can act like he has some, but it doesn’t mean he is empathetic IRL. In fact, when I looked at his personal life and relationships in Wiki, he is (or, at least, was, I hope) a quite a scumbag.

In any case, the man is a consummate professional, even when he’s all fucked up; quoth the Wiki (quoting Cheers and Frasier writer Dan O’Shannon):

He would ooze into the studio, his life all out of sorts. Jimmy would say “Action,” and he would snap into Frasier and expound in this very erudite dialogue and be pitch-perfect. And Jimmy would yell “Cut!” and he would ooze back into Kelsey—glazed-over eyes, half asleep, going through whatever he was going through. It was the most amazing transformation I’d ever seen.

BTW, does anybody here know the origin of the [presumably urban-legend] story that Steely Dan broke up in 1980 because Walter Becker had gone to prison (10 years?) for killing someone in a bar fight?
My wife swore that she had read the info in some reliable periodical some time back, but a thorough perusal of all available bios (including, sadly, the many obits) says nothing about it - which is not the sort of info likely to be suppressed.
Even Snopes had nothing: the nearest thing I could find via Google
was an old SD fansite hashing over whether Becker had been arrested for statutory rape in Hawaii in the ’80s (again, no evidence or records).

‘Evening, Lizards,

Today was our 13th anniversary (how she puts up with me I’ll never figure out), and we went for one more park run to a place we’d driven by hundreds of times but never stopped to visit - historic Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, in the shadow of the Verrazzano-Narrows bridge.

We then went to an early dinner in Brooklyn, at a little place in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge. Lovely day, lovely wife. I’m a lucky dude.

I pulled a bonehead move and didn’t put the memory card back in my camera after Halifax, so we had to take a detour to Target. Anyway, pics hidden so you don’t have to scroll unless you want to.

A cool mix between old and new.
Underbelly of the Verrazanno Bridge.
Some of the buildings are being returned to nature.
