FAQs:

Q. Why isn’t ‘Off to the Vet’ available in full on YouTube?
A. ‘Off to the Vet’ film production and crowdfunding campaign was a huge undertaking for the Simon’s Cat Team. Our hope is to produce more long form, full colour content for our fans but without having to turn to them through crowdfunding again. The film was completed in 2015 and submitted it to a selection of international film festivals over the following months. During this time it was exclusively available to all funders that contributed via our private production blog. The feedback we have received from our funders has been overwhelming positive and we hope they are extremely proud of making the film a possibility. If you are a funder and have any questions regarding the campaign please contact us at igg@simonscat.com

Q. What software do you use?
A. Simon’s Cat is made using Adobe Flash / TV Paint animation software.

Q. Why does it take so long to make each Simon’s Cat film?
A. Even though the films are made on computer software, they are still hand-animated in a traditional manner, frame to frame. It usually takes between 12 and 25 drawings to create 1 second of a Simon’s Cat film.

Q. Where can I buy Simon’s Cat merchandise?
A. You can purchase Simon’s Cat products from the official web shop: simonscat.com

I love Simon’s cats. I’ve had that subscribed for a long time. Some really great stuff that anyone owned by a feline overlord will recognize.

This “Gregg” fellow is not only a special kind of stupid for actually trying to defend the cop, he’s showing himself to be even dumber than that by trying to argue that the NYT got the law wrong. According to him, the cop’s actions were completely legal because of “exigent circumstances.” In this case, the cop was trying to preserve evidence of a crime. Problem with that “logic”: There was no probable cause that the victim had done anything illegal. That much became clear in the video when the cop admitted he hadn’t obtained a warrant (as matter of a quick phone call) because he lacked probable cause.

He doesn’t show kitty chewing every cord. LIKE MY CHICA DOES.

I gave her an old mouse. I check every day & the cord is being obliterated.

I have to put every single useful cord away at night & that’s a pita.

Yikes! This was Saturday of course, but I didn’t hear about till today.

Burning Man attendee dies after running into flames

Every rational human being is horrified at this, from the disturbed victim’s family to the spectators who witnessed who witnessed it. Bat guano preacher Kevin Swanson (of embedded babies infamy), otoh, is probably delighted. He has been claiming recently that Burning Man was really about reviving human sacrifice.

Some vandal has managed to sneak a speculative, though certainly plausible, comment into the wikipedia bio of bat guano preacher Kevin Swanson:

Swanson said that “humble homosexuals that fall on their faces and plead for God’s mercy as the publican did in the parable will go to heaven” and “proud gays will go to hell”. He is more than likely a closeted, self-loathing homosexual.

I kind of lost it on Twitter last week. I was barely over 10,000 tweets last Tuesday and now I have 11,300 tweets. A lot of people got to hear me call the Nashville Statement “high-minded bigotry,” “a flaming pile of garbage” and “a county-wide tire fire,” among other things. It was so very, very hard to keep myself from just having a serious potty mouth and telling the promoters of this thing to fuck off.

But what I learned got attention was pointing out how some of the promoters and signers have covered up child sexual abuse at their churches. I named names. A lot of people resonated to that.

As an Australian in Australia, I can look on at the Complete shite that Tump does and hope it doesn’t “trickle down” (read: piss on) on to us. If Tump were my “elected” head, I’d feel the need to state what should be obvious but not anyone seems to be saying.

Coincidentally, “Silent majority” means the minority (of people) that wants to the majority but can’t accept they aren’t a minority of a minority.

Thing to remember is that none of them can be expected to say anything else. They live the bigotry that is deep in their soul. The best, I think, that some of us (ie religous) can do is simply to post our own statements, without giving them attention, but showing what we believe and that there is a safe place that is a church for anyone.

Yeah, the Nashville statement is ugly & many of those signing it are, frankly, evil. Still, by providing an example of what we believe the divine really wants us to be we hold a far stronger weapon than they wield.

If Christians want people to follow Christ, the first thing we must do is provide a reason why - to live a life that is an example that people want to follow. The fear - fire & brimstone shit - is an ignorant lie that must be thrown away. If we believe that the anointed one told us to live in love, then that is what we must do. For real.

I showed this to a young priest who grew up in our parish this weekend:

He laughed and said that was what he tries to preach, if without the expletive :)

Oh kay. Pretty low here! My grandparents sang in the choir, my father sang in the choir, my mother was the church organist (big old pipe organ). One service they were singing a hymn, and got to the line, “Souls in danger, look above!” and one of the big pipes fell down across the top of the organ. (You understand, I was still in the gleam in the eye stage.) When I was young, I used to sit on the floor behind the organ and watch her feet race up and down the foot octave.

Ah I can imagine :D . If I were in a town that only had a Methodist church I’d be much happier than in many other places. I’d be a naughty radical to them, I suppose, but they come out of the same tradition I do. The Wesley boys always considered themselves good Anglicans ;) We still have a boatload of Charles’ work in our hymnal.

I gather it was quite the talk of the congregation, since they were still talking about it (and probably improving the tale) when I was old enough to remember the story years later.

I hear you. My favorites to watch with John were Kim Possible, Transformers Animated & Avatar: The Last Airbender. Lots of stories with far more depth and teaching that people realize at first. I made a comment to him recently about stories teaching a gentle model of leadership and he twigged on why I liked him watching that version of Transformers.

Thank you. That, if you’ll excuse the phrase, is the evangelism I try to live. Hate can’t make things better & If we don’t make things better, why bother?

Having been raised in a Christian family like that, I am often angry and disgusted at those who have stolen the mantles of Christian and Evangelical, even though I don’t have a god in the fight.

As for organised religion, I think I’ll stay out of that discussion.

I am concerned for my sister and her wife, as the La Tuna Canyon fire is creeping up closer to Burbank’s downtown (she lives adjacent to the downtown area). If that fire gets into the city, that is going to be a disaster for Los Angeles.

Frankly, if I was asked to score WWIII, I don’t think I could do it better than Marco Beltrami in T3. There’s an alternate version with vocals instead of the violin, which rips your heart out.

That brief sequence saved T3; the rest of the film was basically meh.

This is what was firing my imagination when I was about six:

Space Battleship Yamato - Isao Sasaki (with Japanese, Romaji and English subtitle)

The animation isn’t the original, unfortunately. But the music is instantly recognizable. Hard to believe that was 40+ years ago.

Here in Philadelphia, WMMR is playing an A to Z list. Nothing too exciting but every once in a while something cool comes on. Anyhoo, as Bob Segar’s “Hollywood Nights” is ending (ho hum), I’m expecting “Home by the Sea” by Genesis. Turns out that in between, they played “Holy Diver” and (I like Dio) but What the Heck??? Holy Diver?? I was trying to make out some sense from the lyrics but it was just ridiculous. So I googled the lyrics:
Holy Diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what’s becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh don’t you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun ‘till you see the light
Oh we will pray it’s all right

Gotta get away-get away

Between the velvet lies
There’s a truth that’s hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life’s a never ending wheel

Holy Diver
You’re the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he’s mean
Some light can never be seen

Holy Diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what’s becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh don’t you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Huh???

Tomorrow is our regularly scheduled dine out in Cheyenne, but I suspect we’ll miss that doing all the paperwork and such for the rental car.

No word yet from the shop in Sterling on when we might see our car. The insurance adjuster is probably waterboarding the mechanic to get the price down.

while I adore the FLCL soundtrack (and it’s damn good!) and Fly On Shooting Star is an incredibly kick-ass tune…

I still think Yoko Kanno’s work on Cowboy BeBop is the best, not only for the signature work for the theme song Tank but for the theme and mood music throughout the series, moving effortlessly between Jazz, Funk, Rock, Country and borrowing from musical styles for the last 75 years is nothing short of awesome.

also noteworthy (imho) are the soundtracks from Beck and Kare Kano and there are guilty pleasures like the opening themes from Season 1 of Inuyasha and Love Hina too…

No it wasn’t totalled though it was damaged pretty badly (I drove it home after the wreck).

The front air dam under the car was cracked, the passenger headlamp broken, the hood ripped from its locks, and the right front fender torn partly away from the car.

According to the mechanic, the most expensive part to replace is the headlamp (cost to him, $200). I just replaced that headlamp a few months ago after breaking it hitting a hidden pothole on a provincial road in Saskatchewan (that pothole was more like a ravine). We’d just spent $700 to replace it (labour charge at a Mercedes dealer is pretty high).

Those broke a stretch of calm that’ll be hard to replicate in a month loaded with major events that could set the tone on financial markets the rest of the year — from a dozen G-20 central bank decisions to a deadline on the U.S.’s ability to pay its bills and elections in Europe and Oceania.

The National Front was very strong in the UK before the war. It is now being repackaged under the guise of nationalism, and we saw how widespread those sentiments are with the Brexit vote.

I thought National Front wasn’t around until the late ’60s or early ’70s - did you mean Mosley’s BUF? I know they were quite strong in the run-up to WWII.

Oh yeah, Fascism was certainly all the rage in the 1920’s and ’30s. One would think that with the two strongest iterations (Italy and Nazi Germany) having been taken to the woodshed in truly spectacular fashion, it would’ve died off. It survived of course in Franco’s Spain and Salazar’s Portugal and in some South American countries, but really just a shadow of itself - nothing like compared to its heyday.

And now, it’s back in vogue, with new names - Identitarians, New Right, Alt-Right, etc., etc. If nothing else, I guess it speaks to the immortality of ideas……no matter how fatuous they are.

I really worry about what may happen in a time of economic downturn. Fascism has always been at its most dangerous during times of economic trouble. Fascism 2.0 is scary. TBH I think it’s gotten its appeal with younger people because these people unlike your generation or even my sub generation haven’t known many WWII vets. I went digging a bit into far right movements in the United Kingdom. The fellow arrested allegedly belongs to a banned group in Britain called National Action (they promote violent action by their Nazi members). Amongst other things, they spoke favourably of the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox by a man associated with the US Nazi group National Alliance.

(It would seem Hillary Clinton’s claim many years ago of a “vast right wing conspiracy” includes violent right-wing terror groups connecting across international boundaries.)

Irma sounds really bad. I hope it makes a wild turn and heads out away from Florida and just goes out to sea.

I don’t know if the U.S. can handle another catastrophe right now. Not with the catastrophe in the White House.

Well, they are covering all their bases, so by Thursday I think they will have a better idea.

Some say Florida.

Irma is considered a “Cape Verde hurricane” which frequently become some of the largest and most intense storms. Hurricanes Hugo, Floyd and Ivan were Cape Verdes, forming in the far eastern Atlantic — near the Cape Verde Islands — and tracking across the ocean.

Irma is a Cat 5

Crap. Irma is headed into the Gulf of Mexico. A strike anywhere would be a disaster, but somewhere close to SE Texas/SW Louisiana would be catastrophic for them. On top of that, the disturbance in the Bay of Campeche is now up to a 70% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone and threatening the NE Mexico/Texas coast. The disturbance running a thousand miles behind and further south of Irma is now up to a 90% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone, and if it doesn’t hit South America also stands a good chance of entering the Gulf of Mexico.

Perhaps my brother-in-law should just move here. His wife is still stranded in Russia, unable to return to Houston. She’s probably safer there.

So there is some method to this madness:

Trump’s DACA maneuver could be an attempt to extort funding for his idiotic wall.

It would be a case of DT showing some deal-making skills…and will be praised by supporters as proof of why they elected him.

193
lawhawk  Sep 5, 2017 • 6:20:25am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. It’ll be a big week coming up. Trump’s barely holding on as the disaster response in Texas slogs along and here comes another storm that would make US landfall with a significant redistribution of human lives and construction materials.

The latest models are having Irma - now a category 5 with winds up around 175 mph - crashing through the Carribean with a shot at Southern Florida before the models diverge with some suggesting a grind up the East Coast, but some are suggesting Irma reemerges into the Gulf of Mexico for another Gulf Coast hit (where it would regain some strength due to the high sea and air temps).

Hurricane warnings up for USVI, Puerto Rico, and watches up in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The intensity models are pretty consistent with Irma remaining a strong cat 4 into a cat 5 for the next few days.

To say batten down the hatches and prepare for bugging out is an understatement with a storm of this nature. A storm like Irma could do Andrew type damage, so there can’t and shouldn’t be any complacency.

Closer to home, the NWS has put up slight to marginal severe weather warnings for the NYC metro area - west into the Delaware River and Hudson River valleys as a front comes through. This front may be one of the reasons why Irma stays south since it will steer the storm south.

It’s a punt. Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing and he’s left it to Congressional Republicans to pick up the pieces. The same people who claim there’s not enough money to cover disaster response are now going to suddenly find money for a wall and immigrant deportations plus DACA codification?

None of that gets done and none of it is a priority considering that the debt ceiling is upon us once again, plus the fiscal year budget isn’t even done (and that deadline is 10/1). The GOP has punted everything they’d considered and yet there’s some still pushing for corporate tax reform into a period when companies are seeing record profits, and some of those “reforms” include taxing 401k contributions to fund corps and millionaires tax breaks.

Trump doesn’t care about any of the micro level picture, and he doesn’t understand the macro level either. He’s just there to inflict maximum pain and to roll back every Obama policy he can get his tiny little hands around.

What’s particularly galling is that he’s going to have the perjurious Sessions make the DACA announcement about the legality of DACA, when Sessions is unqualified to be anywhere near the DOJ and should have been tossed for perjury.

Oh…..

And Irma’s waiting to slam into Florida and other portions of the US in the next week….

It’s definitely a worry.

Moreover, even using a putative “antifa terrorist group” is not necessary. Any particularly bad shock to the nation could be used that way, and Harvey, Irma, and two more tropical storms now forming, especially if they hit in widely scattered areas, might be enough to trigger a crackdown on civil liberties.

While terrorism is always a good boogeyman for the right, any crisis will do in a pinch. It’s been one hundred years since two Category IV hurricanes hit the USA in the same year; four hurricanes in a matter of a couple weeks might be all they need.

Toss in Cascadia for a bonus. FEMA hasn’t gotten around to settling our tornado strikes in my county in June: Four hurricanes in a few weeks would completely overwhelm them due to intentional neglect by the GOP.

I need to hit the rack; allegedly the car rental company will call and come by later today to pick up our rental car.

At the MTV awards I spoke these words:

“My name is Robert Lee IV, I’m a descendant of Robert E. Lee, the Civil War general whose statue was at the center of violence in Charlottesville. We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism, and hate. As a pastor, it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin.

Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on. We can find inspiration in the Black Lives Matter movement, the women who marched in the Women’s March in January, and, especially, Heather Heyer, who died fighting for her beliefs in Charlottesville.”

He was asked to leave because he said this??? If this is what religion is about in America these days, it should be outlawed. Full freaking stop.

North Korea’s Pink Lady: The Newscaster Set to Announce the End of the World (goes to The Guardian. with video, more at the link):

The apocalypse will be televised, and it will be presented by a pink-clad North Korean woman announcing the news at a near scream.

Ri Chun-hee is the most prominent face on the North’s Korean Central Television, appearing nearly every time the country takes a step towards fulfilling its nuclear ambitions, delivering the state’s proclamations in a booming voice and brimming with gusto.

“The test of a hydrogen bomb designed to be mounted on our intercontinental ballistic missile was a perfect success,” Ri said this weekend, as she quaked with excitement in reporting North Korea’s most powerful nuclear detonation yet. “It was a very meaningful step in completing the national nuclear weapons program.”

The 74-year-old is known as “the people’s broadcaster” and is partial to bright pink outfits. She typically sports a hanbok, traditional Korean attire, although she has been seen in western-style suits, complete with shoulder pads and, of course, in her trademark colour. Her thunderous voice speaks for the regime in a country where leader Kim Jong-un rarely addresses his people directly. But who is the “pink lady” of North Korea?

Yunno, in Germany and in most of Europe (excluding the UK) every citizen has an ID card that identifies them as such. It is necessary in order to register an address (which is also mandatory), open a bank account, sign a lease, enroll children in school, obtain a driver’s license, etc.

It also serves a proof of voter registration.

Having such a system in place would make it a lot harder for people to simply sneak into the country and establish themselves outside the system. It might even make building a wall superfluous.

It’s identical here in the Czech Republic. I sometimes have to explain to students why this concept doesn’t exist in the USA.

On the other hand, when they see videos of DMV kiosks located in supermarkets, they’re totally blown away. The most frequent question that follows is, “Why don’t we have that?! Instead, I have to go wait three hours in some decrepit old office and when I finally get my turn, they go on their coffee break or tell me I filled in something wrong and to come back another time!”

So, in the next 36-48 hrs the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic is expected to fully envelope the homes of nearly three and a half million American citizens, yet the President of the United States nor the White House appear to have even mentioned it

It would really suck if Irma veers south just long enough to miss Florida, then go north again to hit Houston.

Our best local weather guy offers these three scenarios on the homefront.

Scenario #1 - Irma makes the turn later and spend much of its trip northward over land. Without it’s only source of energy (warm water), Irma would weaken considerably. We would still get rain and wind, but the wind not be nearly as severe. It is way early to speculate on flooding concerns. This scenario has been trending up a bit.

Scenario #2 - A turn near the Florida coast would keep Irma over warm waters where it would likely remain a powerful and dangerous hurricane as it approaches our coast. This is the worst case scenario for us and still a possibility. As you might imagine, we would have major impacts from rain, wind and storm surge.

Scenario #3 - An early turn to the north would keep Irma far enough off our coast that we would have very little impacts here. This would obviously be the best case scenario for us and yes, still possible, but is less likely than a few days ago.

Such short memories, that they can’t even remember that the could have passed the “skinny repeal” bill with only 50 votes and couldn’t even reach that. Remove the filibuster and the “moderates” are going to start stamping on your toes a lot more often. Why? Because they don’t hail from deep-red states where the party could run a turnip and get 50% of the vote.

IIRC, Gregor Samsa turns into a vermin. Kafka never specifically says he becomes a cockroach, though Samsa is often depicted as one in illustrations. If you interpret “vermin” as “a kind of person we don’t want or like,” the story makes lots more sense.

In Trump’s view, Dreamers are vermin.

That’s right. I do remember my professor mentioning that when I re-read it. The proper translation is key to understanding Kafka better. As I recall and much to my annoyance, the professor had us get a very specific edition of The Trial(Yep had us read two Kafkas in the same semester.) We read a lot of stuff when atypical narratives. Jean Toomer’s Cane for one. And I found what I read from Gertrude Stein a bit offputting too. I liked the more traditional narratives like Anzia Yezierska’s Hungry Hearts.

Had two years of Berlitz Spanish in the seminary, then went immediately to busting boxes in a NYC Cuban/Puerto Rican warehouse. The Spanish they used there was somehow …different.

Spanish is a weird language. We might all use the same language, but each region can have its own definitions. That makes our interactions … interesting.

A common one that happens in Puerto Rico is when Colombians go to a fast food restaurant and ask for a straw. In Puerto Rico, a straw is called sorbeto, while in Colombia, it’s called a pitillo. But in Puerto Rico, the marijuana cigarette is also called pitillo (among many, many names).

One funny one was when a Dominican merengue group was promoting their first album. The interview went well until the DJ asked the group to introduce their first single. The lead singer asked the audience to “pegar las bolas a la bocina”, an expression that (apparently) in the Dominican Republic means to pay close attention, but doesn’t exists in Puerto Rico, and can be interpreted with other connotations. The DJ quickly jumped in and said, “Wait, people, don’t do that, keep your pants on. Listen to the song, it’s quite good.” After the song was over, the lead singer was apologetic that he didn’t know that what he said was wrong here. 😅

Also, greetings from the Irma danger zone!

Most of the models don’t have the center of the storm tracking this far west but it’s really too early to tell.

Our house is in a non flood zone so riding it out is a possibility (suffered only roof damage during Katrina). We’re not stupid though, if shit looks like its really about to hit the fan we’ll head to Kansas to stay with relatives for awhile. Cat 3 and above is pretty much our red zone for that.

Stores around here are already selling out of bottled water and canned goods. My wife and I are heading out later to pick up some supplies.

Still hoping for the best. If Irma does come this will be the first Cat 2 or higher storm I’ve had to deal with since I moved down here

If the worst case scenario does happen, I’ll be sure to PM a couple of reliable lizards my contact info.

Our worst storm was Opal, which came ashore 80 miles away as a Cat 4. We took minor damage, but barely missed a wipeout from one of the 70 ft pines in the yard. A neighbor had all 3 of his cars in a neat line, so one pine got them all. Cat 3 is plenty for us.

That’s a classic; it’s gotten quite a few laughs here.

2 years ago KLM lost one of our luggage on a flight from Amsterdam to Prague. In order to claim it we had to go to the “unclaimed luggage” department which was through “Door 55” in Terminal 3.

But there was no “Door 55” in Terminal 3!

Then we learned that an unmarked door was called “Door 55” because it was between Door 50 and Door 60.

We knocked on “Door 55” but nobody answered.

Finally we got somebody from Door 50 or Door 60 to let us in & take us to the unclaimed luggage room where we found Z’s suitcase which had been sitting there for 2 days! in spite of KLM telling us “It’s on the truck being delivered to your apartment”

We’re not impacted by hurricanes here in NOVA that often but I do recall one in the summer when I was at summer camp. The Summer Camp was centered in an old chapel. And when it would rain, we would all huddle in there. I had no idea how bad the storm was until after the fact. There was another bad storm- not a hurricane I remember when my best friend begged my brother and I to go to the creek with him. I wisely stayed out of the water but my brother and friend were stupid. Had no idea that both especially my brother nearly drowned that day until much later.

I’ve heard second hand(through my mom’s cousin whose mother was alive before the naturalization) about my great grandparents’ aspirations to be Americans. I empathize with today’s immigrant because 100 years ago that was my family. My family was blamed for “taking work from real Americans”. We were derided as intruders, criminals, and radicals.

I always was respectful to the cops as a kid but I really am growing disgusted in what I see from LEO. I appreciate their job and the job that many of them have done in places like Ground Zero but when I read about sheriff’s offices having ties with the Klan and the just general nasty attitude towards the civilian populace, I grow anti-cop and I know that’s not fair because there are some decent cops out there.

If there’s one positive thing about Trump, it’s that all of these fights he’s leading are ones that have been brewing for 40 years. Republicans have ridden the resentment by promising to do something about them, but never actually doing anything because then they wouldn’t have anything else to run on. Democrats have been hobbled by not being able to count on white people to get to the polls, or, when they do, voting based on resentment. Now, we get to have those fights.

What angers me is how condescending they are to the AA Community. Remember Rand Paul’s visit to Howard telling the students that they’d be shocked to know that Lincoln and the founders of the NAACP were Republicans. I’m not AA but I know most black people know that the GOP turned their backs on them because they wanted the votes of angry whites in the 60’s and I know they see how the right constantly talks down to the community. with absurd implications that life was better in slavery and Jim Crow.
