Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Powerful, Eloquent Essay: Donald Trump Is the First White President

The foundation of Donald Trump’s presidency is the negation of Barack Obama’s legacy
Opinion • Views: 53,054

If you read one long-form essay today, or this month, or this year, make it this stunner by Ta-Nehisi Coates: Donald Trump Is the First White President.

SoundCloud

To Trump, whiteness is neither notional nor symbolic but is the very core of his power. In this, Trump is not singular. But whereas his forebears carried whiteness like an ancestral talisman, Trump cracked the glowing amulet open, releasing its eldritch energies. The repercussions are striking: Trump is the first president to have served in no public capacity before ascending to his perch. But more telling, Trump is also the first president to have publicly affirmed that his daughter is a “piece of ass.” The mind seizes trying to imagine a black man extolling the virtues of sexual assault on tape (“When you’re a star, they let you do it”), fending off multiple accusations of such assaults, immersed in multiple lawsuits for allegedly fraudulent business dealings, exhorting his followers to violence, and then strolling into the White House. But that is the point of white supremacy—to ensure that that which all others achieve with maximal effort, white people (particularly white men) achieve with minimal qualification. Barack Obama delivered to black people the hoary message that if they work twice as hard as white people, anything is possible. But Trump’s counter is persuasive: Work half as hard as black people, and even more is possible.

For Trump, it almost seems that the fact of Obama, the fact of a black president, insulted him personally. The insult intensified when Obama and Seth Meyers publicly humiliated him at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2011. But the bloody heirloom ensures the last laugh. Replacing Obama is not enough—Trump has made the negation of Obama’s legacy the foundation of his own. And this too is whiteness. “Race is an idea, not a fact,” the historian Nell Irvin Painter has written, and essential to the construct of a “white race” is the idea of not being a nigger. Before Barack Obama, niggers could be manufactured out of Sister Souljahs, Willie Hortons, and Dusky Sallys. But Donald Trump arrived in the wake of something more potent—an entire nigger presidency with nigger health care, nigger climate accords, and nigger justice reform, all of which could be targeted for destruction or redemption, thus reifying the idea of being white. Trump truly is something new—the first president whose entire political existence hinges on the fact of a black president. And so it will not suffice to say that Trump is a white man like all the others who rose to become president. He must be called by his rightful honorific—America’s first white president.

Coates’ article is an important statement (one he has made in other ways before, I think, though never specifically about Trump). I read it, but I think I’m going to listen to it, too.

QFT:

Trump truly is something new—the first president whose entire political existence hinges on the fact of a black president.

But for Obama being President, Trump would not have tapped the wellspring of white resentment and bigotries as fully as he did - resonating with white people who think that they’ve lost something because black people (or minorities more broadly, or LGBT, or women) have sought equal rights and protections and have made slow progress on that front.

Trump extended the message that we can revert to the prior state - and depriving rights and protections will restore the natural order of things.

Trump has taken the standard issue GOP message they’ve been pushing for 40+ years and run it up to 11+. He beat other GOPers at their own bigoted game with their bigot brigade base.

Ta-Nehisi Coates is truly one of the most insightful and masterful commentators of the day, and this latest piece just underscores it. His takedown of the “identity politics” attack as well as the use of “diversity” as its own sort of slur is so damn necessary.

I don’t know much about the GC bill other than it hits some states immediately with sharp cuts and the rest down the road. What does it do for anything actually related to healthcare other than take away funding?

Interesting. With Cumberbatch and Freeman being in the Marvel universe, after being in the Tolkien universe, I’m surprised they’d have time, even though a season is generally only a couple of episodes.

One of the things that bugged me about the Conservative reaction to Obama is that they had a chance to hold him up as living proof that the American Dream can work for anyone who works hard enough, regardless of race or social background.

That is supposed to be a core conservative concept. But that would have involved recognizing his accomplishments, even if they did so sparingly and grudgingly.

And that they just could not bring themselves to do so for, well…for some reason: he was at best an affirmative-action case, at worst a Kenyan usurper, but the message was always the same: he was not worthy of the office he held…for whatever reason.

Well you need to remember that racial resentment has been so key to keeping the conservative base in check. It doesn’t matter that Obama much more than any Republican is really a true product of the American dream. You can’t sell that to a base who loved Reagan’s “Welfare Queen” bullshit and “Young Bucks taking t-bones.” In short, conservatives talk about those virtues you speak of but they don’t live them. They never have and it shows in who they nominate for President.

Anyhow just finished listening to this. Props, Mr. Coates. You really did articulate so much of how I feel about the WWC and the attempts to lionize them by white lefty writers. I guess this is my rejection of Marxism because a Marxist only sees class. I think you have to consider all factors including race and the desire to find an another and it’s IMO always been much easier to use race rather than class as another. A poor white man can grow rich, the poor white immigrant can change his name and his kids can lose his accent, but race, well racial minorities will always look different.

I do not mind the thought of them being put into a museum exhibit that puts them in their proper historical perspective: the perspective of a war waged against the USA to not only maintain but propagate the spread of southern slavery, the history of these monuments as means of asserting post-war white dominance and the current image of the Confederacy in modern America.

I did 23andme and found out, to my great surprise, that I’m 99.4 percent European (63 percent English/Scottish/Irish and 36 percent French/German). This does not mesh with the family legendarium. I wondered if 23andme could have gotten it wrong, but of the two closest genetic relatives, one has my dad’s last name and the other, my mother’s maiden name (which is very unusual). So for the time being I’m assuming it’s right, within the limitations of the science.

Heh makes me wonder where my Mom got her fringe Irish. She was 88% Eastern European. As Eastern European as an Eastern European native which really makes sense given that all her grandparents were immigrants from EE. Oh, and on the Graham-Cassidy bill:

The proposal, crafted by Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Dean Heller (R-Nev.), essentially turns control of the health-care markets over to the states. Rather than funding Medicaid and subsidies directly, that money would be put into a block grant that a state could use to develop any health-care system it wants. It also allows states to opt out of many ACA regulations…

The Medicaid expansion and subsidy funding would be cut sharply compared to current spending, going to zero in a decade…

The plan makes huge cuts in federal ACA spending…

If the streamlining turns out to be insufficient, the cuts would hit liberal states the hardest…

It’s Texas. They don’t believe in regulations. Regulations kill business (more important to them than Texans). If there were ever regulations, TX removed them. This is a natural resolution to that mindset.

And it’s coming to your state now. The EPA is virtually no more. Remaining agencies have been pretty much gutted. Dems are trying to do some stuff (which amazingly is actually being done and I am really amazed by Pelosi and Schumer) but I don’t know what is going to happen today, tomorrow or the next day.

IF this happens, it would weaken Irma MUCH faster as it moves toward Georgia and the Carolinas. Can’t rule out it staying over the ocean so please stay vigilant and prepared for the worse case scenario!

And let us not forget his whopper from March (bolding mine):

When Trump Jr. was interviewed by The New York Times in March, the paper says he denied participating in any campaign-related meetings with Russians. “Did I meet with people that were Russian? I’m sure, I’m sure I did,” he said. “But none that were set up. None that I can think of at the moment. And certainly none that I was representing the campaign in any way, shape or form.”

As the person said at Daily Kos, Trump is a child:

[I]n calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.
Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he’d been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. […]

Another person familiar with the calls said Trump told Pelosi her coverage was even better than his. “The press has been incredible,” Trump said.

At that rate (6 days, 8,400 detained) detention it will take 21.5 years to round up all 11,000,000 estimated undocumented immigrants.

The only argument for Trump that I could understand (but not necessarily agree with) is that the next financial crisis is unavoidable, let’s elect Trump, who will precipitate it faster so we can hit bottom, recover, get over it and start rebuilding from scratch…

and that seems to be the plan that a few investors have adopted: those with the resources to ride out or even benefit from such a disaster.

Above the neck is fine, below the neck is not, right?

It was fine for my 5k this morning. I mean, my pace was a little slow but only compared to earlier this week if I am honest and rational and not whining because I didn’t break the 11 min/mile for today’s run where last month I was solidly pleased with a 11:30 mark.

If this keeps up I might just do a 5k tomorrow instead of a 10k though.

That’s the one.

I think I’m going to give up counting. Or some of the counting. I’ll count laps but not heart rate. I’ve been thinking I had my target HR too high, and had a heck of a time messing with my HRM. Today it was set for a rate way lower than the old one, and I remembered how I used to sell HRMs before I ever used one: ‘Most people who get one find out they were working too hard, just wearing themselves out instead of getting better.’ I was using mine to make myself work too hard.

It takes years to sort this stuff out.

NBC meteorologist is saying almost all of South Florida from the tip up both sides and taking in Tampa St. Pete now too because they think it is going to track a bit west and then turn putting it smack in the middle of Florida.

They showed people on 1-95 heading North and it is packed and slow.

Damn. Thoughts go out for safety and security for all Floridians.

Edit to add…they are worried it will hit center bottom and head right up the middle of the peninsula. My old boss lives in Fort Meyers a good part of the year. I hope he is up here in Columbus to get away from it all.

My observation on HRMs is that unless you can determine your LT and MaxHR, they’re not very useful. If you use the ‘220 - age in years’ for MaxHR, they’re worse than useless. That would tell me my MaxHR is only 160, whereas 160 is still below my LT.

Do I need one of those on-the-treadmill tests?

Dunno. I determined my LT by repeatedly observing the HR at which, when climbing, I went from breathing to panting.

Max HR I determined by attacking uphill on a group ride at about 25mph. At 193, my body said to my brain, “Ah cannae gie ye any morre powerrr, Captain! Shee’ll bloe!!!”

That was about 17 years ago, but I can still hit 180 without hitting that wall, so I know my max is still higher than 180.

When I was in the hospital in the rehab room, where the therapist was showing me how to use a walker and hop on one foot without letting my cast touch the floor, I didn’t bitch or complain because there was one other person in the rehab room: an amputee.

I mean like, eventually this cast will come off and I will get my leg back. The cast was actually swapped out a couple of days ago for a removable one, but I’m not supposed to take it off except in the shower.

Reagan’s SEC was pretty good at prosecuting insider trading, as was Bush’s, based on my observations of a couple cases at companies where I worked then.

We were told, “The SEC knows who all your relatives are. They know your high school pals. They know your college roomate’s girlfriend. Don’t even THINK about it!”
