A Stunner: Trump Digital Leader Says Facebook, Google and YouTube Were “Hands-On Partners” With the Trump Campaign

Politics • Views: 53,346

I started watching out of curiosity, but my jaw dropped when Trump digital manager Theresa Hong got to the part where she explained how Google, Facebook and YouTube all consulted directly with Cambridge Analytica to help get Donald Trump elected, because they were paid “millions and millions of dollars.”

Starting at about 2:35 into the video clip:

INTERVIEWER: I mean, what were Facebook, Google and YouTube people actually doing here? Why were they here?

THERESA HONG: They were helping us, you know I mean they were basically our hands-on partners as far as being able to you know, utilize the platform as effectively as possible.

[The Trump campaign spent $85 million on Facebook.]

When you’re pumping in millions and millions of dollars to these social platforms, you’re gonna get white club treatment, so they would send people, you know, representatives, to the Project Alamo to ensure that all of our needs were being met.

I can’t even start with this.

Put this together with the news that Facebook profited from running advertisements from Russian front groups.

Disinformation worked. It worked on not only getting people to vote for him. It worked on getting people not to vote for her.

Will they be held or hold themselves responsible for being accessories?

Oh hell, what am I thinking???

While the taking of money from Russian front groups is wrong, is there anything these companies actually did that was illegal in working with the Trump team? I’m not saying they shouldn’t be shamed, but I’m just not seeing anything illegal in taking money from the Trump campaign and doing the work.

I’m also of the opinion that the people who fell for this crap should be the ones feeling the brunt of any anger.

It’s hard to see how this plays out. The majority of white voters in this country will happily place themselves in indentured servitude to the plutocracy, as long as black and brown people are treated worse.

Maybe not directly illegal, but certainly sloppy and not really researched as to what they were allowing with these ads, bots, videos, whatever.

In old days magazines held advertisers responsible for content and many times checked to see the legitimacy of the ads and stories because that was the only way to hold the rates for the ads, by guaranteeing it was all legit and fair for everyone.

I’m just learning as I think we all are, but wouldn’t these big tech companies be able to flesh out fake news sites, funky bot activities and all of this kind of use of their services.

Very discouraging. The Russians manipulated us like we are a bunch of amateurs; beat us with our own tools and tech.

Oh well. Lots of stuff broke over the last few years.

A majority of white voters would not be a majority of the country, less and less so all the time. A few of the real dupes, the ones who were honestly tricked, are starting to see the light. The GOP is being squeezed back to its hard nut base. That base is impenetrable, and potentially dangerous, but it is not especially large.

Narcissism breeds true regardless of what ideology or worldview it’s mated with.

Hence the “right-left crazy” convergence…at the bottom, there’s just people for whom the ideas—and the causes, and the people—only matter in so much as they elevate the narcissist. Extreme positions and eliminationism (and purity) make them feel special and elite and powerful.

It’s even simpler than that. Sanders had major problems getting the support of non-white Democrats in his primary campaign, for real reasons. That was Sanders having trouble with his primary mission. Even Racists Get the Blues (goes to The Geeky Gaeilgeoir, musings on, and sometimes in, the Irish language)

When racists try to translate things and come up with such things as a tattoo that doesn’t mean what they want it to say, it’s funny (for us) and tragic (for them).

The writer of the blog had someone submit a photo of someone who was wearing a badly-translated shirt that tried to transliterate “Blue Lives Matter” into Irish Gaelic.

He explains at the blog why that won’t work, and what the guy actually got (schadenfreude).

Wingnut running against Elizabeth Warren has his suit (financed by Peter Thiel and using the lawyer that offed Gawker) tossed from court:

Excellent news, America! Turns out that the First Amendment still mostly works, even if you’re a rich dude and you hire the lawyer who killed Gawker! Weird rightwinger Shiva Ayyadurai is this guy who’s running against Elizabeth Warren with the very witty slogan “It Takes a REAL Indian to Defeat a FAKE One” and who likes to insist that he personally invented email when he was a precocious 14-year-old.

The smartypantses at Techdirt have run several articles, going back to at least 2012, explaining that no, Ayyadurai did not invent email in 1978 — but he did invent and copyright the name of an email management system that he called “EMAIL,” which is actually a very different thing from inventing the very idea of electronic mail and patenting it.

Ayyadurai has a long history of suing media outfits who dispute his claim to have invented email — which actually predates the internet — and often often gets nice settlements because fighting a libel suit is damned expensive. He went after Techdirt with representation from attorney Charles Harder, who, with financial backing from bajillionaire Peter Thiel, helped murder Gawker in a 2016 invasion of privacy judgement. Wednesday, Ayyadurai’s $15 million defamation lawsuit against Techdirt got thrown out, perhaps with a certain amount of gusto, by a federal judge in Boston. US District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV found that Techdirt and its founder/editor Michael Masnick were doing perfectly non-libelous First Amendmenting in the blog’s debunking of Ayyadurai’s claims, even if they said unkind things about him.

Hooray for the Good Guys!

In Gawker’s very last post, from its owner (where using Gawker’s moniker “How Things Work,” he describes Gawker’s demise at the hand of a single billionaire libertarian), they point out that no one should ever mention that wingnut without also mentioning his ridiculous claim he invented E-mail.

How Things Work (goes to Gawker):

One can argue about the merits of the Hogan story, and the length of the video excerpt included. But the others are not even controversial among journalists. Of course, Shiva Ayyadurai should not be able to claim he invented email without a reminder that Ray Tomlinson did so a decade earlier. Ashley Terrill, the journalist who is suing Gawker for a behind-the-scenes look at her role in a battle over the legacy and future of the dating app Tinder, has chosen one of Gawker’s most thoroughly researched and nuanced stories to go to court over.

re: #47 A hollow voice says, Covfefe.

It may not be all that surprising, though. If anyone knows how to manipulate already-brainwashed people, it’s Russian former KGB officers and the like. Our problem is how to teach people to recognize propaganda.

How do you teach recognition of propaganda when the leading proponent of fake news and lies is the duly elected “President” of the United States?

Off-topic (I guess):

The car repair shop in Sterling called to say our Smart will likely be available to pick up at 4 PM tomorrow. They said they would call around noon to let us know, so we can be in Sterling to pick up the car.

I assume that 4 PM is too late to get to Scottsbluff to return the USS Expedition to the rental car agency, so tomorrow (assuming the shop does say the car will be ready), I will call my insurance company to ask how to proceed with the rental dreadnought.

I know our host was not a fan of Gawker but the way it was brought down was very troubling. It was not destroyed for propagating lies but for publishing unseemly but true information about a celebrity. Peter Thiel has been a destructive force in our democracy and he destroyed Gawker.

Just checked in. That mess only needs an hour or two delay in turning North to come up this driveway, but Birmingham is far enough inland to give us plenty of warning for a change of venue.
