Checking on the weather in my son’s area (Jacksonville), I get this:

Monday Night
Hurricane conditions possible. A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69.

Hurricane conditions with a forty percent chance of showers and thunderstorms?

Perhaps someone can explain how that works to me.

While the plural of anecdote is not data, every hurricane or tropical storm I went through was continuous rain until the storm passed. (They also note earlier in the day when tropical storm conditions exist there is an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms.)

Most fun I had with a character was 3d edition D&D, when they ditched the alignment restrictions for certain classes. Played a Ranger/Rogue with undead as my preferred enemy, and the DM trusted me enough to play as Lawful Evil.

The funniest thing was no one else researched the setting, so they didn’t bother taking proficiency with any of the various dialects, all sticking with Common, so I ended up being the translator for the party on multiple occasions.

Justice Department Sides with Baker Who Refused to Make a Wedding Cake for a Gay Couple (Washington Post):

In a major upcoming Supreme Court case that weighs equal rights with religious liberty, the Trump administration on Thursday sided with a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.

The Department of Justice on Thursday filed a brief on behalf of baker Jack Phillips, who was found to have violated the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act by refusing to created a cake to celebrate the marriage of Charlie Craig and David Mullins in 2012. Phillips said he doesn’t create wedding cakes for same-sex couples because it would violate his religious beliefs.

The government agreed with Phillips that his cakes are a form of expression, and he cannot be compelled to use his talents for something in which he does not believe.

The Atlantic hurricane season has now produced more than a year’s worth of major hurricanes before the season is even half over. Hurricane Jose reached Category 3 strength at 5:00 pm EDT, the third storm in a row to do so, after Harvey and Irma. Jose’s winds were up to 120 mph in the 8:00 pm EDT advisory, which placed the center about 540 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Tracking west-northwest, Jose was located only about 80 miles south of where Irma prowled just three days ago. Typically, such a path would encounter cold water churned up by the preceding hurricane, but it appears that Jose’s small core is staying just south of the cold wake left by Irma. Jose has also shrugged off moderate wind shear of around 15 knots, with the help of warm SSTs of around 29°C (84°F) and a fairly moist atmosphere (mid-level relative humidity close to 60%).

No hurricane safe shelters in the city of Ft. Meyers, Fla. The city is advising leaving the Ft. Meyers.

If you live in Fort Myers and you need to find a storm shelter, expect to travel outside of the city.

Places like the old Dunbar High School and the Dr. Carrie Robinson Center have always been considered by some to be the go-to places for shelter. These places, however, do not meet the current standards set by emergency management for protection against hurricane winds.

“I was under the impression we could use those facilities,” said Councilman Johnny Streets Jr. of Ward 2.

It was a nurse who brought the issue to the attention of Streets, who later relayed the message to the city in the form of a memo to City Manager Saeed Kazemi.

“I certainly think we have a responsibility from our positions to be looking for buildings that are sufficient,” said Streets.

The closest storm shelter is 15 minutes away at South Fort Myers High School. With more than 70,000 people living in Fort Myers, it’s the largest city in Southwest Florida without its own public shelter.

Gasoline is starting to run out in Florida. Governor Rick Scott ordered armed escorts for gasoline trucks delivering fuel to filling stations. He urged station owners and employees to stay open as long as possible, promising police escorts for employees to get them out.

(As Irma bears down on his state, he then went on “Hannity” last night, making sure he had the important things in order first.)

Part of Florida’s problem is 96% of its refined gasoline arrives by sea. Hurricane Irma will soon shut ports. The Coast Guard (that thing Trump wants to defund) is prioritising gasoline shipments into Florida ports over all other shipments.

The US House passed a bill unanimously permitting self-driving autos with no controls, and preëmpts states and municipalities from overriding such rules.

The Senate has a softer version that permits localities to have tighter restrictions.

I’m not sure how a control-less self-driving car would even work around here (as I noted, GPS maps don’t seem to have our roads on them; even something like Google Street View doesn’t show any of our village streets except US-26 and NE-92 - people in town do get privacy from all-seeing Google).

Again, as posted above, there is no tsunami alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center from the earthquake.

Amongst other things, it was so close to the coast if there was going to be one, it would have happened already.

Mika is a geophysicist.

I suspect that damage from an earthquake that close could be considerable, though it was 30km+ underground.

While there will be real damage photos, I suspect people will start flooding social media with recycled photos of other earthquake disasters, as happens with every catastrophe (like the endless recycling of sharks on freeways after hurricanes).

New York State Supreme Court rejects a claim to a right to doctor-assisted suicide.

In a unanimous, unsigned opinion, the seven judges of the New York Court of Appeals said the state had legitimate reasons for outlawing the practice, including to protect vulnerable patients from pressure to end their lives.

“We are very disappointed by the court’s decision,” said Edwin Schallert, a lawyer for the patients and doctors who brought the lawsuit. “It will prevent terminally ill New Yorkers from exercising an important option to achieve a peaceful death.”

Schallert said he would likely move for the court to reconsider its decision, which cannot be appealed to any higher court.

The office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, which defended the law in court, had no immediate comment.

What’s more, Rosa himself would not vow his support for Biss in the Democratic primary.

“I will be supporting the candidate who is most likely to deliver a $15 minimum wage, affordable child care and free college tuition for all,” Rosa said.

The Clintons endorsed that toolbag Nina Turner for Ohio Secretary of State, including helping with fundraising, and she decided to support Bernie.

Steve Bannon claims Catholic Church has ‘economic interest’ in ‘unlimited immigration’

“The Catholic Church has been terrible about this,” Bannon said about its stance on immigration. “To come to grips with the problems in the church, they need illegal aliens, they need illegal aliens to fill the churches… They have an economic interest in unlimited immigration, unlimited illegal immigration.”

CBS’s Charlie Rose pointed out that this seemed to be an awfully harsh thing to say about the Catholic Church.

‘I know nothing”

The Native American Party, renamed the American Party 1855 and commonly known as the “Know Nothing” movement, was an American Nativist political party that operated nationally in the mid-1850s. It was an anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant movement, often taking the form of a secret society. The movement briefly emerged as a major political party in the form of the American Party. Adherents to the movement were to reply “I know nothing” when asked about its specifics by outsiders, thus providing the group with its common appellation.

The “Know Nothings” believed a “Romanist” conspiracy was afoot to subvert civil and religious liberty in America and sought to politically organize native-born Protestants in the defense of traditional religious and political values. In most places “Know Nothingism” lasted only a year or two before disintegrating because of weak local leaders, few publicly-declared national leaders, and a deep split over the issue of slavery.

The Know-Nothings have the last laugh, considering that their bitter enemies, the Republicans, have now embraced Know-Nothing principles wholesale.

I mean it’s not merely she supported Bernie, it’s how she attacked the Clintons imo. Their money and fundraising was okay with her but then they became no better than the GOP. For me the issue with Turner isn’t that she endorsed him, it’s how it was done which is why I’m good with Keith Ellison.

Reminds me of Shia LaBeouf. He is playing John McEnroe in an upcoming movie.

Shia LaBeouf says playing tennis star and hothead John McEnroe in the drama Borg/McEnroe was “quite cathartic.”“It expressed something I feel deeply,” LaBoeuf added as he promoted the opening night movie for the Toronto Film Festival, Borg/McEnroe, ahead of a world premiere on Thursday night. The troubled Hollywood actor plays McEnroe in the biopic about one of the greatest sports rivalries of all time, as Borg/McEnroe traces the long-running battle for supremacy in the tennis world between McEnroe and Swedish star Bjorn Borg in the 1970s and ’80s.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. In addition to the ongoing drought and wildfires across the Western US, there’s Irma barreling through the Caribbean with expected landfalls in Florida and the SE US, Katia waiting to make landfall in Mexico, and Jose is about to take a repeat tour of the same areas Irma wiped out just days ago.

Then there’s a major earthquake in Mexico, and they’ve reported casualties.

All across the Caribbean, there are reports of catastrophic damage and casualties. Having warning in advance of the storms has reduced the death toll, but it’s still significant when you’ve got storms that have damaged pretty much every structure on these island nations.

The GOP still refuses to address climate change and global warming, and they’re trying to get out of the disaster response business. They continue voting against storm assistance and funding disaster relief in Congress - not enough to block aid, but a reminder that these craven fuckers don’t care about anyone but themselves and their single minded devotion to making tax cuts for millionaires happen.

Every time these fuckers (yeah, I’m in a foul mood) talk about how there isn’t money to pay for disaster relief or that they need offsets from discretionary funding, they refuse to address the 800 pound gorilla that is that the GOP is intent on cutting taxes and revenues that the government needs to function to do stuff like disaster relief and rebuilding infrastructure to accommodating rising sea levels.

We started seeing some of this during the Katrina rebuilding discussion - where the levees were rebuilt to a slightly higher level, but one that is not necessarily taking into account rising sea levels, which means that the safety people think that they’ve got is a mirage.

So why do so many people fall for this? Well, you’ve got college dropouts like Rush Limbaugh telling people that these storms are a hoax - that Trump and his conspiracy theory echo chamber think global warming is a hoax. They can afford to bug out to higher/safer ground because they’ve fleeced their know-nothing supporters, while those who take their advice are the ones who are gambling with their lives by sticking around, or they simply can’t afford to get out.

Fun Sportsball advertising promotion betting on a 15 game winning streak which the company thought would be hard to do.

This article was posted yesterday prior to the Cleveland Indians playing Chicago last night.

The Indians won in a blow out 11 to 2.

Time to pay on the bet…which the company said they will. I saw elsewhere it will be $1.7 million dollars. The company took out a $75,000 insurance policy on the bet.

clevelandscene. com - With a Tribe Win Tonight, Local Window Company Owes Full Refunds to 250+ Customers as Part of Promotion

The Indians are the hottest team in baseball, having won 14 games in a row (tying the club record set last year) and increased their Central Division lead from 3.5 games to 11 games in the process. The streak is all kinds of historic: The Indians are the first team since the 1960-1961 Yankees to win 13 plus straight games in back to back years.

Another 14-game winning streak was improbable; 15 games would be damn near impossible. Or so logic and odds would have told you before this all started. So when local window company Universal Windows Direct offered a promotion in July, coinciding with its 15th anniversary, offering free services to any customers that month if the team won 15 games in a row the rest of the year, it seemed like a safe bet the company would walk away with some good PR and an insurance premium on the contest. And then the team caught fire.

“Besides the players, nobody wants the Tribe to win 15 games in a row more than us,” Bill Barr, co-owner of Universal Windows Direct, said in a statement after the team won their 12th straight. “Everyone who purchased windows, siding, doors, a new roof or anything else from Universal in July will get their project done for free! All we can say is, ‘Go Tribe!’”

The company had 266 orders in July in the Cleveland and Columbus areas, with the most expensive project coming in around $30,000.

Which brings us to tonight and the Indians’ match-up against the lowly White Sox. With Cy Young contender Corey Kluber on the mound, there’s a damn good chance 266 people around Ohio are going to be very happy sometime around midnight.

Don’t attribute this to the lies of college dropouts; after all, some of the most brilliant people of the past 30 years were college dropouts - Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs — who did not reject climate change. Rush Limbaugh and others of his ilk are spreading lies formulated by college graduates such as the Koch brothers, who don’t care if the world drowns because any action might affect their bottom line. How many statues exist of James Longstreet in the south? The only one is at his home/museum. There is also one at Gettysburg. Confederates blamed the loss of the war on Longstreet. He is a symbol of white-anti-white supremacy.

I’ve talked about Longstreet before too. He was hated for that and that’s why his reputation got trashed by the Lost Causers. The reasons why they hated him were what you talk about, that he admitted the war was about slavery, and he dared to criticize Lee in his memoirs. Longstreet is underrated as a general. I remember reading that they were still teaching his theories and tactics on defensive war at West Point well into the 1940’s and beyond.

My college American history professor knew Foner and even slept on his couch a few times when they were both young academics in the 70’s and 80’s. Anyhow, my brother got a Foner written textbook as his history text. Maybe that will help change some minds here in conservative Western Loudoun County. I have to admit that even I myself bought into the myth of “Good General Lee” for a long time. Trump doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing, doesn’t know how to get to consensus, or to negotiate to a deal, but thinks these all happen if he says it’s got to happen.

Trump doesn’t have a health care plan. He doesn’t have a tax plan. He doesn’t have an infrastructure plan, and he certainly doesn’t understand the ins and outs of any of those policies.

He thinks if he says it that it gets done.

And we have Maggie busy trying to claim that he knew that he chose badly to prioritize repeal/replace over tax reform.

Heh. He and the GOP didn’t have a clue because they were all fixated on gutting Obamacare first and foremost. 7 years of promising a “better way” and they couldn’t even get out of the starting gate.

Tax reform wont be any different. It’s a shit show and the overwhelming majority of tax breaks and cuts flow to the rich like Trump. Everyone else gets shafted - the burdens via reduced services as revenues fall short and the economy doesn’t grow (because trickle down doesn’t work). But the rich get to pile up their wealth and park it offshore or in real estate and so don’t pay nearly as much tax in percentage terms on those as someone who works 9-5 and barely makes ends meet.

I still can remember a black classmate trying to tell a white one that people never consider what the CSA flags and memorials mean to black people. Along with the denigrating of those who fought for the Union (Grant), helped win the war (Stanton), or advocated equality for the freed slaves (Thaddeus Stevens).

Yep, that’s what pisses me off the most. The true heroes of the Civil War get denigrated for the Lost Cause myth. Grant becomes Butcher Grant and corrupt Grant. I admit for the longest time I too believed he was a bottom tier President but he went after the Klan. Stanton got over his initial misgivings about that Lincoln fellow and was a great Secretary of War. And Stevens, men like him and Charles Sumner were way ahead of their times in so many ways.

Hello everyone,

My area got lucky … we only felt tropical storm winds. It’s still raining hard and sporadically. Other areas, like Culebra and Vieques, faced the thick of Irma. I’ve only heard of two casualties before the hurricane, but I have been disconnected (no electricity and no phone service) since Wednesday.

Oh man…I don’t want to hear about Vieques. That’s where my friend Ode lives. I have not heard from her after sending her a ‘stay safe’ email earlier this week. Damn, I hope she and all her doggies are okay.

Stanton was an “autocrat” and a “difficult” person.

Fortunately there’s a pretty good and fairer treatment of Stanton in a new biography of him I’m reading.

Also, there was a new biography of Grant released last year (Ronald White) and another one coming in October by Ron Chernow (Hamilton).

So we’re finally getting around to elevating some forgotten or otherwise unfairly treated national heroes.

Even beyond the slavery issue*, the thing that annoys me about the Confederate worship is They. Tried. To. Break. Up. The. Union. Why on earth would we build monuments to that or celebrate its leaders? (If I lived or grew up in the South I admittedly might feel differently, but for people like Noonan…)

*I do think it’s fair to point out that at one time in the nation’s history every state allowed slavery, most Northerners were themselves racists to varying degrees and the Civil War was not fought to end slavery but ended slavery to restore the Union, etc. So I don’t think it’s fair to single out the South necessarily for criticism regarding slavery.

And these police unions are getting mighty annoying.

espn.com

Steve Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, wrote the letter to Goodell on Thursday and made it available to media. He said, in part, “While the NFL may condone Bennett’s disrespect for our American Flag, and everything it symbolizes, we hope the League will not ignore Bennett’s false accusations against our police officers.”

Why would a police union accuse an NFL player of “disrespecting our flag”? Are the police responsible for defining patriotism? And given the police unions fever about flag postures, I wonder what they think of the Confederate monuments, you know, monuments to people who actually fired on the U.S. flag and fought against it.

They think they can bully and intimidate people. It’s funny. The GOP talks about Union thugs all the time when dissing teachers but never these assholes who actually are thuggish and engaging in threatening behavior. I’m getting tired of the police unions too. The whole Democratic Party structure too. The same structure that supported her. I don’t know what her deal is. What amuses me and I know does you is that the Bros seriously think she should be VP. Someone who got less than 40% of the vote running for Sec of State in a purple state should be VP. You’ve seen me say this before but I really did question Sanders ability to be a good President. I had similar opinions of the police as you growing up. These past few years my opinion has changed as a result of everyone now having a video recording device of some sort.

Henderson police in the past always gave off the impression of too many cops and not enough to do.

I had one experience where one “fell” asleep at a traffic light, so I lightly honked at him to get him moving. Yep, he didn’t like that. He pulled over to the side, let me pass, and then proceeded to ride my car’s butt around the area for the next 15 minutes until I got to my destination. How nice of him for the escort.

Should it come as a surprise that the 90 who voted against were GOPers?

And enough with calling these people fiscal conservatives. They’re saboteurs who want to gut federal funding and want to cut federal spending in order to give rich people bigger tax breaks.

If they were fiscally conservative, they’d realize the need to raise taxes on people to pay for critical needs - like infrastructure upgrades to protect against storms so that they don’t need to constantly flood out.

Today in irony: Tomi Lahren’s ancestor was prosecuted for forging immigration papers

It’s almost as if cruelty and willful ignorance were related or something. In a story published on left-leaning political site Wonkette, genealogist Jennifer Mendelsohn revealed yesterday that Tomi “locks her car doors when passing a Taco Bell” Lahren is descended from one of those criminal immigrants she wants deported. By that, we mean that one of her ancestors was prosecuted for illegally forging his naturalization paperwork. Puts this tweet in a different light, doesn’t it?:

Tomi Lahren ✔ @TomiLahren
We are indeed a nation of immigrants. We are also a nation of laws. Respect our laws and we welcome you. If not, bye. #DACA

Now, let’s back up for a moment: The concept of “illegal” immigration didn’t exist in the U.S. until the late 19th century, when the blatantly racist Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 became the first federal law to regulate newcomers to the U.S. The same racial bias extended into the 1924 Immigration Act, which established quotas for immigration from different parts of the world—quotas that heavily favored western Europe. (Jeff Sessions is a big fan, saying the act “was good for America” in a 2015 interview with none other than Steve Bannon.)

Somewhere in between, Tomi Lahren’s great-great-grandfather Constantin Dietrich came to the U.S. from the city of Odessa, then part of South Russia. Dietrich’s obituary says he came to the U.S. in 1905, and he initially applied to become a naturalized American citizen in 1909. However, once he did the paperwork conservatives are always screaming about, he changed the date of his original declaration from 1909 to 1911, because he waited too long to complete the process, and needed to fudge the numbers in order to disguise the period where he was—wait for it—undocumented. He got caught, though, and went on trial for forgery in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1917. He was ultimately acquitted.

Kobach is again pushing that nonsense about voter fraud in New Hampshire, and Trump will run with that again and again despite actual evidence showing no wrongdoing or voter fraud.

Every time voter fraud comes up with this cabal, they make extraordinary claims, but there’s no extraordinary evidence. There’s no evidence actually, and it takes only the slightest effort to disprove, but by then the right wing echo chamber has repeated this story enough that it’s taken as Gospel.

GOP wants to deprive people of the right to vote. They want to tie the ability to vote with drivers licences or other ID that poor people are less likely to get or more difficult/costly to obtain. They want to stop college kids from voting where they’re attending college.

They want to do everything possible to sway votes to keep people from voting and to depress turnout.

And it’s worked before, and it continues working. Because not enough people see midterms as important, let alone off year elections. If you’re not voting in all elections, you’re giving away your vote and letting GOPers gain unfair advantages to press during the presidential election cycle and it influences everything from state and local races to Congressional makeup - up to and including judicial nominations that get to push a regressive agenda going forward.

Depends on the manufacturer but during Jensen Huang’s (Nvidia CEO) speech at GDC early this year he pointed out that the drive system they’re developing updates the mapping routes and conditions on the fly. So worst case scenario all that’s needed is for a driven vehicle using the same tech to traverse your area to add it to the system.

Essentially Google Street View is outmoded, it was lucky to hit any given area in most cities once a year or so. Newer systems will be much more granular and responsive, generated by actual users in real time.

Florida judge dismisses fraud lawsuit against DNC

Good grief Rich conspiracies and I have to agree with the judge. They needed to address their grievances within the Democratic Party. And honestly I don’t blame the DNC for favoring Clinton. She was gasp an actual Democrat. That fact is always ignored when people whine about the DNC’s “favoritism.” Not to mention the fact the Sanders campaign has a lot of shady business of their own.

20 lbs of kitty litter, 2 jars of peanut butter (BOGO) (they restocked from yesterday), 2 squeezable jelly bottles (BOGO), Little Debbies peanut butter bars, Peanut M&Ms, pack of fake golden oreos

Half tempted to ride back over since they restocked water, but suspect it’ll be gone by the time I get there

TBH, I would have a little more sympathy for the Sanders camp if the man were a Democrat or even had stayed one. You can’t blame Democrats for favoring her over him especially elected ones. Clinton’s showed that she will campaign for Democrats. Part of being President is being your party’s leader and Clinton soared above Bernie in that not just by default but by actual virtue as well. I think last year was the first time Sanders ever campaigned for other candidates.

Back down south at home, it looks like irma’s going to come right up our road. Our house is on its own. Neighbors on both sides stayed.

For us (me, 88 yo mom, mrs DM, cats) we are spectators who likely wont be affected by the storm much. Just temporary wanderers, almost vacationlike - certainly not refugees. Until the aftermath and what we find when we do/can go home. So i’ll spare you all our remote and distant logistical issues. They are nothing and no one cares anyway.

When my mom had twins, somebody said, ‘oh, that makes up for the one you lost.’ One baby had died at three months, she’d had one more before the twins, and I think it was mom who said in response to the one I can’t remember, ‘God doesn’t work that way’. She had one more after the twins, then got divorced, maybe because that was the only way she knew of to stop having kids.

Yep, Bernie was pretty much all but officially beat in April but he continued to grift under the delusion he still could win. I really lost a lot of respect for Robert Reich for engaging in that. I get that Reich really sincerely did believe in Bernie’s message but they were lying to his supporters saying that he still had a chance and my absolute favorite was seeing the Sanders supporters I knew trying to beg the DNC delegates to award the nomination to Bernie. Hillary beat her in both delegates and popular votes. Under no reasonable situation did he win the primary. And to put some ore salt on it, Hillary actually beat him in states that had unofficial primaries after their caucuses such as Washington state.

He’s someone I lost a lot of respect for. I was actually familiar with him since I’m a political junkie. I don’t really mind his youthful supporters as much as I do the older ones. The older Bros are the worst. The youthful ones I can almost forgive because I was that kid once when I supported Kucinich and a little idealistic and naive. Though a lot of the other stuff especially the outright racist condescending behavior to the Clinton minority supporters still ticks me off. Frank’s much better at articulating that than I am though.

Yep. Which is why as a person/candidate Bernie is dead to me. I still like some of his ideas but not him.

I remember the conversation the other day on here about Democrats having some degree of racism and sexism in their ranks. Some family members of mine are like that when it comes to women in power. They voted for Hillary, but they really wanted Bernie and refused to see the damage that his ego was doing. Some even questioned Pelosi’s effectiveness in Congress and how she needed to retire. After what happened with the debt ceiling the other day, that shut them up real quick.

Once Bernie stopped talking policy and started attacking Hillary’s character, I was done.

I’m beginning to think that the reason that the Azteks and Mayan civilizations just up and disappeared has nothing to do with drought or war, but with a major hurricane ripping through Central America - something on par with Katrina/Irma and just wiped everything out.

This was Trotskyite entryism. There is a deliberate technique of taking over organizations, by subterfuge usually, to bend them to your political will. Of course, since the entryists don’t have anything invested in the organization they tried to take over, they are happy to toss it aside like a used Kleenex when it’s convenient.

That’s a good starting point, but it appears that there’s no plan for counterflow so that vehicles can get out of harm’s way - and trying to move that many people means we’re likely to see a repeat of Rita evac from Houston.

None of this is good.

The Aztecs fell victim to Cortés and his conquistadores. The Mayan civilization simply collapsed and it’s believed that climate change, specifically, drought (as well as deforestation), was the most likely cause.

“The Maya are often depicted as people who lived in complete harmony with their environment,’ says PhD student Robert Griffin. “But like many other cultures before and after them, they ended up deforesting and destroying their landscape in efforts to eke out a living in hard times.”

A major drought occurred about the time the Maya began to disappear. And at the time of their collapse, the Maya had cut down most of the trees across large swaths of the land to clear fields for growing corn to feed their burgeoning population. They also cut trees for firewood and for making building materials.

The House on Friday overwhelmingly approved a $15.25 billion disaster aid package that also extended government funding and the federal borrowing limit until Dec. 8, moments after Republicans vented their disappointment to two top White House officials over the deal struck this week by President Trump.

The measure passed 316-90; every member opposed was a Republican.
.
.
“I love President Trump, and I’m with him probably 90 or 95 percent of the time, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to raise the debt ceiling with $19 trillion public debt and not have any effort to change the way we spend money here in Washington,” Barton said Thursday.

Meanwhile, nature keeps showing stuff that we’ve never before witnessed:

Recall, it wasn’t but a few hours ago that we saw Irma drop in strength from a Cat 5 storm. No other storm in recorded history had been able to maintain that strength for as long as it did in the Atlantic basin (or anywhere else for that matter).

Downside of the dip in top speed is that the eyewall replacement cycle completed, and the hurricane force winds are now spread over an even larger area. Dr. Masters has much more. He’s predicting that the intensity might slightly decrease, but warns that storm surge could be extreme, particularly through the everglades and into the greater Miami area - and the Eastern coast of FL is on the damaging right quadrant of the storm, so it’ll churn its way through Florida.

It’s looking like the storm may well make landfall around Key Largo

Per The Guardian’s hurricane live blog:

The UN’s special representative for disaster risk reduction, Robert Glasser, has joined the chorus of voices linking the extraordinary frequency and force of weather events - huge hurricanes, wildfires across the American west, flooding in Nigeria and India - to the exacerbating effect of climate change.

“There can be little doubt that 2017 is turning into a year of historic significance,” Glasser said, “in the struggle against climate change and all the other risks that put human life in danger and threaten the peace and security of exposed and vulnerable communities around the world who find themselves in harm’s way from hurricanes, floods and earthquakes.”

We must realise that these disaster events are not natural phenomena but are a result of a built environment which is not fit for purpose and a failure to understand how we are intensifying the cocktail of disaster risk by not adequately addressing poverty, land use, building codes, environmental degradation, population growth in exposed in vulnerable settings and, most fundamentally, greenhouse gas emissions.

The floods and monsoon rains across South Asia, deadly landslides and drought in Africa, the impact of four major Atlantic hurricanes, a major earthquake in Mexico with a tsunami threat to central America vividly demonstrate that we need to redouble our efforts to reduce the impact of such events in the future. They are a reminder to us all that the worst disasters which could happen have not happened yet.

“If we do not succeed in understanding what it takes to make our societies more resilient to disasters then we will pay an increasingly high price in terms of lost lives and livelihoods.”

Chris Christie is terrible on the radio. I used to hear him on WFAN in the NYC. He would do the show with Boomer and Carton (the one that as just arrested for a Ponzi scheme to pay his gambling debts). I heard Christie for about a minute and changed the station. He is either abrasive or boring. Mostly boring.

Are CNN and MSNBC trying to make their stations unwatchable? I think so.

Shooting from the hip, I am sure small pox didn’t help. I remember seeing a documentary on Easter Island, saying that the residents deforested the island, which led to their demise.

Not just that, but possibly some kind of civil war on the island; European accounts from 1722 (first contact) and 1770 mention standing statues, but James Cook’s 1774 expedition noted that several of the moai statues were lying face down, having apparently been toppled.

Something happened in the four years between 1770 and Cook’s expedition in 1774.

Probably a useful lesson learned after Hurricane Katrina (and brought home after Irene and Sandy): Republican or Democrat, people are going to remember how their State officials deal/dealt with natural disasters - no matter how close or far away Election Day might be…

The confederate statues should stay up because history and heroism and moral war and did you know that Democrats were KKK and confederates even though slavery was OK very good for black people and it’s terrible confederate hero statues being torn down.

If Dems were KKK and all confederatey, then we should be there ones who have the final say as to whether the statues stay or go.

The wingnuts are so turned around they don’t know whether to shit or go blind. If the DNC has accomplished anything so far, it’s stoke the fires of the GOP civil war by making their leadership look ever weaker while at the same time keeping Trump from having any major accomplishments. So Trump’s attacking the leadership, the leadership are slowly admitting he’s a complete ignoramus, and the base is fracturing over who wants to win and who wants to see it all burn to the ground.

To add - when Cook visited in 1774, he noted that several moai had been knocked over….but by 1825, when the HMS Blossom showed up, they reported no statues were left standing. There were a few attempts to approach the island in the 19th Century, but the inhabitants were by then (after 1825) openly hostile.

Then slave traders from Peru showed up in the early 1860’s, then tuberculosis, and by 1877, there were only a little over one hundred people left on Easter Island; 97% of the population had been wiped out.

Rick Scott is a criminal who should have been sent to prison for his financial wrongdoing but he did successfully run a large corporation. He is smart and knowledgeable, just not ethical. He knows how to look good on TV, just not how to do the right things. He appears to be a climate change denier; I wouldn’t applaud his performance or usefulness in his role unless he publicly announces a change in heart and urges the country to do something about climate change

Then why do they keep calling it “the war of northern aggression?”

Accurate to call it the War of Southern Insurrection (the South Carolina traitors fired the first shots at Union controlled Fort Sumter). Calling it a war of northern aggression ignores that it was the South that started the war, fired the first shots, and did so because they wanted to preserve the institution of slavery.

Speaking of Fort Sumter, it’s closed by the NPS ahead of Irma - prepping for likely storm surge/damage.

Another case of the police trying to police our patriotism:

Sunday’s actions come amidst the backdrop of Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association president Steve Loomis telling cleveland.com that members would not hold the flag on Sunday. Williams said the police have had “a great relationship with the Browns since I’ve been a police officer.”

“There’s a lot of misunderstanding as to what the players were really trying to accomplish with the prayer that they did,” Williams [Cleveland Policy Chief] said. “And the response by some folks in law enforcement was kind of over the top also.”

The f0ck “law enforcement” has to do with some players kneeling or praying during the National Anthem is kind of beyond me.

Worth noting that the Police Chief of the City of Cleveland said some LE reactions were “over the top”. The main butt-hole here seems to be the other LE guy, head of the patrolmen’s association. I guess that’s the union.

Perry agricenter gives free shelter to horses - and owners - fleeing Hurricane Irma

It’s one thing to find a temporary home for a 20-pound beagle.

It’s quite another to find shelter for a 1,100-pound thoroughbred.

The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry is offering a safe haven for people and their horses fleeing Hurricane Irma, which is projected to slam into Florida this weekend and travel up the coast of Georgia.

“We’re getting calls contantly,” said Stephen Shimp, executive director of the fairgrounds, which is about 106 miles from Atlanta. “Our phones are lighting up.”

Currently about 45 of the available 350 stalls are occupied.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reportedly canceled a series of nationwide raids scheduled for mid-September that would have added up to the largest—and possibly, most devastating—enforcement operation in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) history.

“Multiple sources within and close to ICE” initially shared information about the raids with various immigrant rights groups. But following public outcry and further exposure from an NBC News report, DHS announced that “Operation Mega”—set to target some 8,400 undocumented immigrants later this month and “the largest operation of its kind in the history of ICE”—was off, allegedly due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma:

Nose-Up-Trump’s-Ass disorder. Basically, whatever Trump wants or decides is good. This is the difference between, say, Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham. Ann jumped on the Trump Train for the racism, but when Trump wasn’t racist enough, she squawks. Ingraham? She’ll embrace the same thing she slammed yesterday, if Trump changes his tune. The pundits like Dobbs are those who see this as a master stroke on Trump’s part. In one move, he not only put the GOP leadership “on notice” that he’s ready to go over their heads to get things done, but he’s also got the DNC right where he wants them. Those pundits think that Pelosi and Schumer are now signaling that they’ve given up on getting rid of Trump and are prepared to start deal-making with him, which means he’ll get what he wants through them rather than the GOP leadership.

You don’t have to be Admiral Ackbar to see how obvious this trap is for them.

Definitely not anything in the DSM V.

Dobbs will say or do anything to stay on the air. His viewers tend to lack the critical thinking skills to understand any type of contradiction.

He’s probably still bitter over the fact that after Bill O’ left Fox that he didn’t get Bill’s job. I mean, one angry old white guy should be a perfect replacement for another.

Instead, the job went to Tucker.

Hey, I’m an angry old white guy! How come I don’t have a job at Fox?
////

Shit, I’d get the hook before the first commercial:

Tonight on the Blind Frog Belly White Show, we discuss how stupid you have to be to follow Ayn Rand and call yourself a Christian! After that, we’ll be hosting a debate between Nobel Prize Winning Economist Paul Krugman and Stephen Fucking Moore, the dumbest guy in all of Economics, discussing why Moore thinks America’s rich people aren’t rich enough yet, but America’s poor people are TOO rich.

I wanted to go run 5k but I recognize where maybe the part where I ran a fever yesterday and the bit where I still want to run the half on Sunday means I shouldn’t.

But I’m still really antsy and wish I had.

Bolded part is the sign of a future in running. If ‘the half’ means half of a marathon, that future may be too soon.

The Ayn Rand thing has always slayed me.

Bill Maher has really ripped into Stephen Moore from time to time. I remember when Bill started quoting “that idiot” Larry Kudlow and Moore said “Hey, he’s a good friend of mine.” Bill said, “I know.”

I tried to find the video, but no luck.

Bill Maher can get overbearing, but I agree with him on a lot of issues. I just tend to not be as obnoxious about it.

The fact that Kudlow and Moore and their ilk still have jobs after their track records of bad predictions tells you all you need to know about just how dismal a ‘science’ Economics is.
