Most fun I had with a character was 3d edition D&D, when they ditched the alignment restrictions for certain classes. Played a Ranger/Rogue with undead as my preferred enemy, and the DM trusted me enough to play as Lawful Evil.
The funniest thing was no one else researched the setting, so they didn’t bother taking proficiency with any of the various dialects, all sticking with Common, so I ended up being the translator for the party on multiple occasions.

In a major upcoming Supreme Court case that weighs equal rights with religious liberty, the Trump administration on Thursday sided with a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.
The Department of Justice on Thursday filed a brief on behalf of baker Jack Phillips, who was found to have violated the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act by refusing to created a cake to celebrate the marriage of Charlie Craig and David Mullins in 2012. Phillips said he doesn’t create wedding cakes for same-sex couples because it would violate his religious beliefs.
The government agreed with Phillips that his cakes are a form of expression, and he cannot be compelled to use his talents for something in which he does not believe.

The Atlantic hurricane season has now produced more than a year’s worth of major hurricanes before the season is even half over. Hurricane Jose reached Category 3 strength at 5:00 pm EDT, the third storm in a row to do so, after Harvey and Irma. Jose’s winds were up to 120 mph in the 8:00 pm EDT advisory, which placed the center about 540 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Tracking west-northwest, Jose was located only about 80 miles south of where Irma prowled just three days ago. The US House passed a bill unanimously permitting self-driving autos with no controls, and preëmpts states and municipalities from overriding such rules.
The Senate has a softer version that permits localities to have tighter restrictions.

New York State Supreme Court rejects a claim to a right to doctor-assisted suicide.
In a unanimous, unsigned opinion, the seven judges of the New York Court of Appeals said the state had legitimate reasons for outlawing the practice, including to protect vulnerable patients from pressure to end their lives.
“We are very disappointed by the court’s decision,” said Edwin Schallert, a lawyer for the patients and doctors who brought the lawsuit. “It will prevent terminally ill New Yorkers from exercising an important option to achieve a peaceful death.”
Schallert said he would likely move for the court to reconsider its decision, which cannot be appealed to any higher court.

Every time these fuckers (yeah, I’m in a foul mood) talk about how there isn’t money to pay for disaster relief or that they need offsets from discretionary funding, they refuse to address the 800 pound gorilla that is that the GOP is intent on cutting taxes and revenues that the government needs to function to do stuff like disaster relief and rebuilding infrastructure to accommodating rising sea levels.
We started seeing some of this during the Katrina rebuilding discussion - where the levees were rebuilt to a slightly higher level, but one that is not necessarily taking into account rising sea levels, which means that the safety people think that they’ve got is a mirage.
So why do so many people fall for this? Well, you’ve got college dropouts like Rush Limbaugh telling people that these storms are a hoax - that Trump and his conspiracy theory echo chamber think global warming is a hoax. They can afford to bug out to higher/safer ground because they’ve fleeced their know-nothing supporters, while those who take their advice are the ones who are gambling with their lives by sticking around, or they simply can’t afford to get out.

The US House passed a bill unanimously permitting self-driving autos with no controls, and preëmpts states and municipalities from overriding such rules.
The Senate has a softer version that permits localities to have tighter restrictions.

Don’t attribute this to the lies of college dropouts; after all, some of the most brilliant people of the past 30 years were college dropouts - Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs — who did not reject climate change. Rush Limbaugh and others of his ilk are spreading lies formulated by college graduates such as the Koch brothers, who don’t care if the world drowns because any action might affect their bottom line. Most people who are promoting this dishonesty, such as Bret Stephens, have degrees from reputable institutions.
It is conservatives and members of the GOP who are effectively spreading misinformation, regardless of their educational background.

I’ve talked about Longstreet before too. He was hated for that and that’s why his reputation got trashed by the Lost Causers. I remember reading that they were still teaching his theories and tactics on defensive war at West Point well into the 1940’s and beyond.

Do you guys know Eric Foner, Columbia University History professor and an expert on Reconstruction. My college American history professor knew Foner and even slept on his couch a few times when they were both young academics in the 70’s and 80’s. Anyhow, my brother got a Foner written textbook as his history text. Maybe that will help change some minds here in conservative Western Loudoun County. I have to admit that even I myself bought into the myth of “Good General Lee” for a long time. I still don’t see Lee as akin to Nathan Bedford Forrest personally but I don’t see him as the reluctant secessionist either.

Trump doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing, doesn’t know how to get to consensus, or to negotiate to a deal, but thinks these all happen if he says it’s got to happen.
Trump doesn’t have a health care plan. He doesn’t have a tax plan. He doesn’t have an infrastructure plan, and he certainly doesn’t understand the ins and outs of any of those policies.
He thinks if he says it that it gets done.

Tax reform wont be any different. It’s a shit show and the overwhelming majority of tax breaks and cuts flow to the rich like Trump. Everyone else gets shafted - the burdens via reduced services as revenues fall short and the economy doesn’t grow (because trickle down doesn’t work). But the rich get to pile up their wealth and park it offshore or in real estate and so don’t pay nearly as much tax in percentage terms on those as someone who works 9-5 and barely makes ends meet.
I still can remember a black classmate trying to tell a white one that people never consider what the CSA flags and memorials mean to black people. She was forceful and polite about it but she wanted to make her point clear that whereas a lot of Southern whites see heritage with those statues and flags, black people see a celebration of people who treated them worse than animals.

Stanton was an “autocrat” and a “difficult” person.
Fortunately there’s a pretty good and fairer treatment of Stanton in a new biography of him I’m reading.
Also, there was a new biography of Grant released last year (Ronald White) and another one coming in October by Ron Chernow (Hamilton).
So we’re finally getting around to elevating some forgotten or otherwise unfairly treated national heroes.
Even beyond the slavery issue*, the thing that annoys me about the Confederate worship is They. Tried. To. Break. Up. The. Union. Why on earth would we build monuments to that or celebrate its leaders? (If I lived or grew up in the South I admittedly might feel differently, but for people like Noonan…)
*I do think it’s fair to point out that at one time in the nation’s history every state allowed slavery, most Northerners were themselves racists to varying degrees and the Civil War was not fought to end slavery but ended slavery to restore the Union, etc. So I don’t think it’s fair to single out the South necessarily for criticism regarding slavery.

Henderson police in the past always gave off the impression of too many cops and not enough to do.
I had one experience where one “fell” asleep at a traffic light, so I lightly honked at him to get him moving. Yep, he didn’t like that. He pulled over to the side, let me pass, and then proceeded to ride my car’s butt around the area for the next 15 minutes until I got to my destination. How nice of him for the escort.

The Senate has a softer version that permits localities to have tighter restrictions.

Depends on the manufacturer but during Jensen Huang’s (Nvidia CEO) speech at GDC early this year he pointed out that the drive system they’re developing updates the mapping routes and conditions on the fly. So worst case scenario all that’s needed is for a driven vehicle using the same tech to traverse your area to add it to the system.
Essentially Google Street View is outmoded, it was lucky to hit any given area in most cities once a year or so. Newer systems will be much more granular and responsive, generated by actual users in real time.

Yep, Bernie was pretty much all but officially beat in April but he continued to grift under the delusion he still could win. I really lost a lot of respect for Robert Reich for engaging in that. I get that Reich really sincerely did believe in Bernie’s message but they were lying to his supporters saying that he still had a chance and my absolute favorite was seeing the Sanders supporters I knew trying to beg the DNC delegates to award the nomination to Bernie. Hillary beat her in both delegates and popular votes. Under no reasonable situation did he win the primary. And to put some ore salt on it, Hillary actually beat him in states that had unofficial primaries after their caucuses such as Washington state.

He’s someone I lost a lot of respect for. I was actually familiar with him since I’m a political junkie. I don’t really mind his youthful supporters as much as I do the older ones. I remember the conversation the other day on here about Democrats having some degree of racism and sexism in their ranks. Some family members of mine are like that when it comes to women in power. They voted for Hillary, but they really wanted Bernie and refused to see the damage that his ego was doing. Some even questioned Pelosi’s effectiveness in Congress and how she needed to retire. After what happened with the debt ceiling the other day, that shut them up real quick.

This was Trotskyite entryism. There is a deliberate technique of taking over organizations, by subterfuge usually, to bend them to your political will. Of course, since the entryists don’t have anything invested in the organization they tried to take over, they are happy to toss it aside like a used Kleenex when it’s convenient.
Bernie was not a Democrat, is not a Democrat, and letting him run for Democratic candidate without any loyalty to the party was a huge mistake. Doesn’t matter if his ideas are compatible; once it suits his purposes he’ll piss all over the party.

Recall, it wasn’t but a few hours ago that we saw Irma drop in strength from a Cat 5 storm. No other storm in recorded history had been able to maintain that strength for as long as it did in the Atlantic basin (or anywhere else for that matter).
Downside of the dip in top speed is that the eyewall replacement cycle completed, and the hurricane force winds are now spread over an even larger area. Dr. Masters has much more. He’s predicting that the intensity might slightly decrease, but warns that storm surge could be extreme, particularly through the everglades and into the greater Miami area - and the Eastern coast of FL is on the damaging right quadrant of the storm, so it’ll churn its way through Florida.
It’s looking like the storm may well make landfall around Key Largo

Perry agricenter gives free shelter to horses - and owners - fleeing Hurricane Irma
It’s one thing to find a temporary home for a 20-pound beagle.
It’s quite another to find shelter for a 1,100-pound thoroughbred.
The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry is offering a safe haven for people and their horses fleeing Hurricane Irma, which is projected to slam into Florida this weekend and travel up the coast of Georgia.
“We’re getting calls contantly,” said Stephen Shimp, executive director of the fairgrounds, which is about 106 miles from Atlanta. “Our phones are lighting up.”
Currently about 45 of the available 350 stalls are occupied.

Those pundits think that Pelosi and Schumer are now signaling that they’ve given up on getting rid of Trump and are prepared to start deal-making with him, which means he’ll get what he wants through them rather than the GOP leadership.
