Trump’s Anti-Science EPA Head Says We Shouldn’t Discuss Climate Change Now

It would be “insensitive”
Politics • Views: 36,798

The guy Donald Trump picked to head the Environmental Protection Agency, like most of Trump’s picks, is leading an agency he’s determined to undermine and destroy; Scott Pruitt is a far right climate change denier in the pocket of the fossil fuel industries. And today he gave an interview to CNN in which he used the well-worn “bad timing” excuse to try to shut down discussion of climate change, as we see one of the most powerful super-storms ever recorded poised to lay waste to the east coast of the US.

Washington (CNN) – Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt told CNN in an interview about Hurricane Irma on Thursday that the time to talk about climate change isn’t now.

“Here’s the issue,” Pruitt told CNN in a phone interview. “To have any kind of focus on the cause and effect of the storm; versus helping people, or actually facing the effect of the storm, is misplaced.”

He continued: “What we need to focus on is access to clean water, addressing these areas of superfund activities that may cause an attack on water, these issues of access to fuel. … Those are things so important to citizens of Florida right now, and to discuss the cause and effect of these storms, there’s the… place (and time) to do that, it’s not now.”

[…]

“Congress should address that at some point. And Congress hasn’t,” he said. “All I’m saying to you is, to use time and effort to address it at this point is very, very insensitive to the people in Florida.”

It’s pretty safe to say there’s never going to be a time when Trump’s anti-science puppets give their permission to discuss the ever-worsening impact of climate change.

I’ll check with my co-workers who got flooded out of their homes by the Harvey 1000-year rainfall event and see if they mind if ‘cause and effect’ is discussed. I don’t think they will.

Okay, so here’s a brief overview as to why hurricane evacuations can be such a mess.

Seven to Ten days out most hurricane prone coastal areas become aware of a storm, typically by the five day mark there’s a general idea where it’s headed and people in those areas can begin making preparations. I can’t speak for everyone in the hurricane zones but most people I know around here don’t consider evacuating for anything less than a Cat 3, for some people there may be medical factors and such that make evacuating more of a necessity, but this example is meant to be from a general population perspective.

So, let’s assume we’re 6 days out and the storm is projected to be at least a strong Cat 3 or 4 by the time it makes landfall. This is the point where people who can easily afford to start to leave but generally they make up a relatively small percentage of those who stand to be impacted by the storm. I’m talking people who can afford to FLY out without a problem.

For the not so fortunate they have to carefully think about their work and financial situations prior to leaving. Some jobs will NOT give extra days for a storm until a mandatory evacuation is called, which is often two days or less until a storm is due to hit. Even if you can get days off, they may not be paid (think a lot of service industry jobs).

Evacuating by land based vehicle is dicey for several reasons:

1) Most vehicles can get around 250-300 miles on a full tank of gas. For reference, the distance from Orlando, Florida to Atlanta, GA. Is 440 miles. Also realize you can make your best mileage on a low to moderate traffic road in fair to good weather conditions. Obviously, with a hurricane like Irma, there’s only so many evacuation routes north and those roads, even the interstates, are NOT designed to handle the volume of traffic generated by an event like this. This is why contraflow (where both sides of an interstate are allowed to flow in the same direction) is sometimes enacted, though even it can only do so much to alleviate the volume. Of course, being stuck in an endless traffic jam will burn through your gas just like driving regular highway miles does. This is what caused so many problems during the Houston evacuation for Rita back in 2005.
2) Good luck finding more gas - So let’s say you’re evacuating from Orlando to Atlanta and you run out of gas somewhere around Lake City, FL. You try to find a gas station that still has any and…you can’t. Well…so much for evacuating by car then. Now, you’re effectively stuck and facing the prospect of not riding out the storm at home but rather in your vehicle or perhaps a shelter if you can find one (This goes on the assumption that pretty much all the hotel rooms in the area have been snapped up at this point).
3) Not all of us have a vehicle capable of making a several hundred mile round trip. My 7 year old, relatively well looked after Chevy Impala with about 120 000 miles on it, while it can certainly handle road trips, has just that much more chance of breaking down me. Owning a late model or low mileage vehicle is a privilege, not a right.

Now you understand why some people just say “Evacuating? Screw it, I’m going to take my chances staying put.” We make fun of some of these people, ostensibly for being dumb, but you got to understand that a lot of thought and reasoning probably went into their decision to stay behind. A lot of them probably WISH they could evacuate, but for a lot of them, it’s just not possible.

Of course, you can see the class system at play here. Obviously those with more wealth and means will be much better equipped to get the hell out of dodge before it gets really bad, while those of more limited means have no choice but to ride it out and hope for the best. The wealthy will also get through the recovery much more quickly than lower income folks.

Even the best organized, most orderly evacuation ever will be a long and involved process.

Unfortunately such an evacuation will never happen because of human nature. You get a bunch of worried panicked people in a crowd and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

Evacuation might seem like an easy choice from a basic perspective, but in reality it’s anything but.

In media ad buy terms that’s a Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM) of $1.42 (70M people / $100K). probably the most efficient advertising rate I’ve ever seen and roughly 80.5% lower than Facebook’s average CPM. Even when you factor in the lower rates associated with reaching the older demographics that were likely being targeted it looks like Facebook cut the Russians quite a deal.

re: #19 Charles Johnson

If you want to really get pissed off, there’s reports indicating that if you actually check to see if you’re part of the data breach, you waive rights to sue their asses.

Like most websites, at the bottom of this new site is a section called “Terms of Use.” There, in paragraph 4, is bolded, uppercase text of note. It tells site visitors that you agree to waive your right to sue and instead must “resolve all disputes by binding, individual arbitration.”

AGREEMENT TO RESOLVE ALL DISPUTES BY BINDING INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION. PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE SECTION CAREFULLY BECAUSE IT AFFECTS YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS BY REQUIRING ARBITRATION OF DISPUTES (EXCEPT AS SET FORTH BELOW) AND A WAIVER OF THE ABILITY TO BRING OR PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS ACTION, CLASS ARBITRATION, OR OTHER REPRESENTATIVE ACTION. ARBITRATION PROVIDES A QUICK AND COST EFFECTIVE MECHANISM FOR RESOLVING DISPUTES, BUT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT IT ALSO LIMITS YOUR RIGHTS TO DISCOVERY AND APPEAL.

Of course, it will be up to the courts to decide whether arbitration agreements are enforceable. The legal standard is whether they’re “unconscionable.” We’ll find out soon enough because class-action lawsuits are already being lodged on behalf of breach victims.

NY AG Scheiderman’s already lodging a suit against Equifax on that very issue.

Not just the CEO but like five top executives.

I’m pretty sure this is going to kill Equifax.

What I want to know is what recourse do we have for these companies that have all our personal data when we don’t give them permission you even have it (!) when they are irresponsible with that personal data and shit like this happens. Why are they even allowed to have this much information?

Ostensibly to enable lenders to judge how good a credit risk you are. None of the information (birthdays, CC numbers, account numbers) is redacted, though. I’ve seen the printed reports lenders get from the bureaus. There’s enough there for anyone to steal your identity and your money if that info is available.

I don’t understand why the account numbers can’t be redacted, and why it’s necessary to have a seven- or ten-year record of all the places you’ve lived.

This is where I remind people who bashed New Orleanians (not that I think any are here) that with predicted landfall of Irma in Florida sometime Sunday, we are at roughly the point in the timeline when the predictions finally identified New Orleans as a likely point of Katrina’s strike. Up till then, the tracks listed as probable were well to the east.

Imagine evacuating Miami on that kind of notice.

Of course, the flip side is that Irma could still throw a curve, although hurricane prediction has advanced noticeably since Katrina.

Yep, I saw that. That waiver is never going to stand up, and I’ll bet they remove it soon. Equifax is in deep shit, and they made it much worse by the way they’ve handled this awful situation - CEOs dumping stock while they waited 40 days to make the breach public.

No way I’m going to use their ID protection service.

I agree that the provision wont hold up but it might take a court ruling to make them drop it.

But they will get to shit on everyone’s credit ratings (and screw millions of people by mishandling their data) in the process. ID protection service doesn’t mean a damned thing when they’ve opened the barn door.

I’d temper that “they’re in deep shit” when we’ve got a Sessions’ run DOJ and Trump admin has decided to let the criminals run the asylum. White collar crime has always been far harder to prosecute and the punishment is never as much as it is for other kinds of crime.

It’s because Bernie had no real plan just like Trump has no real plan to deal with the adversity that comes with being President. Well you never saw it directed at male candidates and you sure as hell don’t see it directed at Bernie. No, quite the opposite, Bernie becomes a victim in defeat. Hillary becomes that bitch who lost when she should have won. And they were reckless with my personal information. If this was HIPAA they world be in legal trouble. Why is all this personal information, which is far more sensitive than simple medical records, allowed to be collected like this? And yes I suppose that’s rhetorical.

The almost amusing thing is the hit that’s going to be on those same financial institutions who insistented on this. The credit score (that they refused to define how it’s calculated) isn’t enough, they have to have enough information to create an entire identity and proved all the information to never allow any kind of weird driven password again like, oh say, mother’s maiden name.

Yup; that’s one of the consequences of the storm going essentially n/s over Florida rather than E/W across the state.

Andrew bisected Florida from Atlantic coast to Gulf coast, so it didn’t have long over the state. Irma’s taking a path that will basically screw everyone in the state in some fashion, except for a handful in the panhandle.

I think she genuinely did make some missteps, especially in the 2008 primary - but she learned from them. She took responsibility and made changes and honestly that kind of introspection and growth is fucking hard and a lot of people don’t want to bother. I can respect someone who owns up to that.

There was an article not to long ago about who could be the next Doctor Who Doctor, written before they made their choice. It argued that there could never be a female Doctor, because she wouldn’t be allowed to make kinds of mistakes that the Doctor is known for (he actually gets a number of people killed due to his missteps). It’s the pressure Hillary has had to deal with.

As for the new Doctor, I’m hoping they write a good portion of her character acting the same way the men have, making mistakes and soldiering on.

For what it’s worth, I’ve always hated the credit bureaus.

I used to work for a finance company. Back when some of the transactions we processed were by computer, others the old fashioned way. First job I had in which everyone had a computer terminal on their desk.

We had to memorize all kinds of code to navigate from page to page. I had to run the credit reports, and call to verify some of the results at different institutions.

It was really boring.

I know what they are for. What I’m saying is that it don’t believe I’ve ever given an outside company permission to have all this information on me.

TBH, the entire credit reporting system is outmoded, and I would also suggest deliberately discriminatory against POC and the “lower classes.” For example, a person may have moved several times to chase employment opportunities, or to escape an abusive situation. Payments may have fallen behind because of protracted illness or a sudden layoff. The credit rating is obtained with some kind of arcane set of measurements, and only recently has it become possible to see your score at any time without damaging it.

Centralizing that kind of personal information in one place (or three, FTM) was a disaster waiting to happen.

That’s just maddening. I’ve read excerpts from Clinton’s book in which she VERY CLEARLY accepts most of the blame herself for losing the election. Yes, she says there were other factors that played into it as well, and guess what? There WERE.

Before this election, to be honest I wasn’t a huge fan of Hillary Clinton, but the way she’s been treated by the media throughout the campaign and continuing to this day is absolutely disgusting.

Hint: She has been treated that was since I’d say around 1992. Maybe you accepted it in your past life, but it has not changed.

People gave her shit when she said “It was a vast right wing conspiracy” back then. She was right then, she is still right now.

A mandatory evacuation order without the government providing flights, vehicles, gas along the land route is simply a way of blaming people for remaining in the face of the storm. Back in those days, having your credit report pulled could (and would, if done too often) negatively affect your credit score. Want to see your FICO? Unless you somehow got the chance to see the report someone pulled when you were applying for credit (car loan, etc.), it was extremely difficult for a consumer to get directly and, even if you did, it was like reading Greek, because it was meant for banks, not for laymen.

So on the topic of the thread, I read a humorous - if sadly accurate - comment that reflects the attitude shown in this post:

Evening Lizardim.

Three weeks ago: “It’s not as hot as it usually is at this time of year, in a small part of America, which is a small part of the world. Climate Change is a hoax!”

Two weeks ago: “It’s too soon, with Harvey bearing down on Houston, to talk about Climate Change!”

Last week: “It’s too soon, with people still recovering from Harvey, to talk about Climate Change!”

This week: “It’s too soon, with Irma setting up to roll up Florida, to talk about Climate Change!”

Next week: “It’s too soon, with people still recovering from Irma, to talk about Climate Change!”

The Week After: “It’s unseasonably cold somewhere. Climate Change is a hoax!”

And it was inaccurate. All kinds of duplicate, incomplete and ancient data was included.
That’s why a whole bullpen of low level employees had to call to verify information the credit buyer needed. I had a rolodex full of numbers for banks and major employers all over the country. It was crazy.

Until I had them correct it, the bureaus had my name and my father’s name and accounts on my reports.

I once went to buy a car, just after getting divorced. My sister (whose SSN is 3 digits different than mine, whose name is one letter different than mine, and neither of us have middle names or changed our names when we got married) was with me. I was told my credit history was “too thin” to buy a car on my own, so my sister volunteered to co-sign for me.

When they ran her credit and mine, we found that my student loan was on HER credit report, her bankruptcy was on MY credit report, and each of us was listed as an alias on the other’s report.

So I’ve known for at least 20 years that the shit on credit reports is not always accurate.

I was able to cull the english books from a friend’s library that is moving to another country and english is his 3rd? language.

Anyway, I got six big moving boxes of books — I’ve nearly completed going thru them and valuing them. I love books.

Most are first editions with good dust jackets, but are newer. A lot on WWII — and American history. And W Somerset Maughm. I never read him.

I’m on my third book now —Newton’s Gift. Very well written, and I think I might actually understand the basic math (calculus really) the author explains.

From The Guardian’s hurricane liveblog:

The Antigua and Barbuda Met Office has warned that Jose - now a category four hurricane, with wind speeds of 150mph (240kph) - could make its presence felt in the northern Leeward Islands as early as midnight.

It’s currently approaching 7pm local time.

Residents of Barbuda - the tiny island left desolate by Irma just days ago - are being evacuated to the larger sister island of Antigua, which suffered less damage.

By 8am Saturday, Antigua News Room reports, “we could be looking at Irma-type winds”. Flooding is also expected.

Shelters have opened in Antigua for those seeking refuge - again.

Latest customer; a guy who used to come visit his bike while he was waiting for me to get around to fixing it for him. He got it back about 2 years ago, brought it in today with a flat tire, thinking it needed some more sealer, but it needed a tube. And a light, and a lock (both installed on the bike.) He calls all the women ‘mija’, because they’re all younger than he is, and he loves his daughters so much, ‘mija’ is his highest compliment. Mr. w and I have taken to calling him ‘the mija guy’.

His lock came with 5 keys. He asked why, and I said, ‘So you can lose four.’ I told him he could leave one with me, so when he loses four, he knows where the fifth one is. I will now add it to my collection. Nobody has ever come to claim one. Yet.

And he got his bike back today.

VOCABULARY WORD OF THE DAY (from the Urban Dictionary)

gimp bitch
Remember the gimp from pulp fiction? Not a desireable character to be. Neither is a wus, especially if you’re male. This is the combo of the two, and thus creating a super brand of male bitch.

Can also be used to describe a total yes-man in any line of work. Do you agree?…yes sir. Get me coffee…yes sir. Make some copies….Yes sir. Finish those TPS reports…Yes sir. Put on some leather and get in a this box….yes sir.

You let the boss take advantage of you again? You’re his gimp bitch aren’t you? Bet you’d be more comfortable with a bright orange ball in your mouth.

I thought Lucifer’s Hammer was really good when I was younger. Read it again about 10 years ago, and cringed at how racist it was - White farmers, ranchers, and engineers battling the blacks from the cities who almost immediately went cannibal, AND Anti-Science!

Pournelle himself, as I understand it, went full metal wingnut.

I loved it when I was 16.

Pournelle was always a RWNJ.

Pournelle has always been wingnut & worse since he started writing. He’s a closet monarchist and fascism isn’t strong enough for him. Check out “Fallen Angels” sometime. (checking that name on Wiki shows he passed today.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem sempiternam.)

There was one book he wrote with Niven, I forget the name of it, but it involved the Left getting together with the Religious Right to stop Technology, resulting in a New Ice Age, which inexplicably managed to glaciate most of the Northern US in a matter of years.

I got a dollar says he was a Climate Change Denier, because RWNJ membership trumps love of science.

Fallen Angels. I don’t know why I haven’t read it, since I read a lot of Niven and a bunch with Pournelle as a teen.

Still, De mortuis nil nisis bonum, so I’ll stop.

“Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,” reminds me of a line from “Hansel and Gretel and Ted and Alice; An Opera In One Unnatural Act”, but PDQ Back. Someone pretending to be a monk is singing what he’s pretending is Latin, and sings about “Agnus and her sister Doris Dei”

That’s the one.

Edit: Don’t bother.

It’s interesting because it shows that RWNJ ideas about science, especially climate science, were fully formed as early as 1991, many years before Al Gore started to champion the cause. The same allegations of grant grabbing and a communist conspiracy hidden political agenda appear there that appear in more recent anti-science.

Current pet peeve: people who retweet every tweet in a thread.

I find myself muting the person they’re retweeting.

The grant-grabbing thing originally came from Creationists, along with “More and more scientists (none of whom I can name) are rejecting [Scientific Fact I Don’t Like]!”

Oh, my… Peter Schickele is an underappreciated genius. The PDQ material could only be written by someone with an absolute command of every branch of classical music.

Who else could invent the Windbreaker, the Slide Windbreaker, and the Double-Reed Slide Music Stand?

Ah, okay, I got tripped up the typo (i.e. instead of “BMOC”, your comment said “BOMC - and I was all, what? “Book of the Month Club”? “Burnt Orange Media Conspiracy”?? Or another one on Urban Dictionary that I…really, really don’t want to picture hannity and ailes engaged in o_O )

sorry
