Billie Joe Armstrong sure gets major mileage out of those few chords.

The greatest thing about any of his songs is that you can strip away the production and play them on an acoustic guitar, and they’re still really good songs.

Oh for fuck’s sake the stupid click-baity headline NBC news article about the Yellowstone supervolcano is making the rounds among journalists on Twitter now and it’s so fucking awful.

This is an awful headline and to be bluntly honest the science behind it isn’t all that great either. I remain completely unconvinced it would have any impact on whether or not there is another eruption. I am convinced it would destroy the geyser fields because that is what has happened with geothermal drilling at other geyser fields and FUCK YOU ASSHOLES WHO PROPOSED IT.

Ahem.

Don’t retweet that stupid article. Please.

Terminal Communication is a fixed-frame work featuring the actions of drivers as they approach a badly signed junction leading into Rosslare Harbour ferry port, in County Wexford. Filmed from a vantage point overlooking the junction, the camera captures the incidents which locals then claimed was an everyday occurrence. Since the work was made the temporary blockade has been removed.

Can’t do it. Can’t do it…..

On FB we’re having a discussion of what you put on Grits, salt or sugar. Everyone says salt of course. Wingnut cousin’s friend, with whom I’ve tangled a time or two, says, “Shrimp and Grits are what’s for breakfast in heaven!”

And I’m fighting the urge to reply, “So no Orthodox Jews in Heaven?”, with a smile. If it were just between us, I’d do it. But it’s too easy for others to misunderstand.

I’ve had grits with brown sugar, and it’s pretty good. Grits with cheese was amazing, though.

RIP, Don Williams

Don Williams, country music’s ‘Gentle Giant’, dies at 78

Don Williams-Good Ole Boys Like Me (With lyrics)

To me this lovely song illustrates just how steeped in the Lost Cause southern culture really was, and still is in many respects. Williams seems to capture it all, “Hank and Tennessee” Williams, the tie in to fundamentalism, the picture of Stonewall Jackson, Thomas Wolfe, etc.
I suppose I post this to let neo-secessionists know that I do not reject their cause out of ignorance. I know the myth, and feel its appeal. It is still the work of the devil though.

Small roadhouse restaurant with truck parking, some west North Carolina two lane. Toothpicks are in empty Texas Red Hot sauce bottles. Tinted windows from the grease and smoke. Coffee is from sometime last week it feels like. It had…texture… Guy across from me is digging into calf brains with grits smothered in butter and some scrambled eggs slathered in catsup. With toast. On FB we’re having a discussion of what you put on Grits, salt or sugar. Everyone says salt of course. Wingnut cousin’s friend, with whom I’ve tangled a time or two, says, “Shrimp and Grits are what’s for breakfast in heaven!”

Your cousin’s little friend is wrong, Virginia. Grits and grillades are what’s for breakfast in heaven.

Unless it’s huevos rancheros.

With toast. My work laptop went all wonky. Slow as molasses. Running 40-60% of CPU all the time, even with no aps running. Even making a slight change in Excel would throw it in to ‘Not Responding’ for minutes. Luckily, I had my workstation (currently aligning 16 samples of RNAseq data AND heating my office!) was still working fine.

One of the IT guys spent two days on it. Finally tracked down the problem - some background ap was corrupted, but not badly enough to simply fail to load. No, it kept running, eating up 60% of CPU at all times. He uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and it was fine.

Then my phone had a simple problem that took a day’s work to identify and fix.

Yeah, it was part of startup. My computer would run at 90+% of CPU for the first 20 minutes after startup. Then drop to single digits. Then bounce up to 60% and fluctuate between that and 40%.

The issue was identifying what was using all the CPU because it was all part of ‘System’.

The phone is part of the company’s phone system, which also works together with Outlook.

Three years ago my parents were on a trip back to my mom’s home area in GA. We asked if they could buy us a bag of grits. They sent us a 20# box of white and 20# box of yellow. We have about two Sunday breakfasts left of those two boxes. In our house, though, grits are basically a butter and salt delivery system (soy sauce for the wife). We have made the occasional cheese grits dish, too.

God, if you believe that the prophets are inspired by the divine, taught us everything we need to know about humility 2300 years ago via the prophet Micah. 6:8 in his book…

He has told you, O mortal, what is good;

but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?

The arrogance of the hate inherent in fundamentalism is the opposite of humility. I fart in his general direction…

Unless it is a hardware problem, normally the quickest way to fix things, provided everything is properly backed up, is just to reload the operating system, which I am assuming is Windows.

Sometimes things like malware, assuming that’s the problem, can get so intertwined with the operating system and other programs, that it’s just not worth the hassle.

Basically, just nuke it from orbit and reload Windows.

I don’t really look favorably on any of my high school crushes.

I stopped dreaming about my high school ex in my 40s. I remember being so ashamed to be in love so hard. Now I know it’s what happens.

My crushes, on the other hand, could now only be evoked by a certain pair of tight jeans or feathered-back hair. Not really my thing anymore.

Biscuits and sausage gravy. Whether it’s homemade gravy, or gravy from a packet, or gravy from a can, I just can’t get enough.

Yep, even the cans we bought was quite tasty with decent biscuits.

In order to stay sane in the ongoing fight I have avoided reading it through. And avoided the media reactions. At home: Sausage gravy and biscuit bake.
Restaurant: Chicken fried steak with sausage gravy, homefries, 2 eggs over easy and a picture of mac and jacks amber ale (worked a night crew in Seattle. This was the most filling from the 5 point tor under 10 atthe time)
Always order eggs Benedict always because I cant make it, and I treat it like reubens: never had a bad one

All righty, best breakfast ever in lizards’ personal experience?

Mine, with second place not even in sight, was a cup of beef broth, certainly from a can or jar, on a hospital tray.

Full disclosure: I had been on total IV feed for three days while being treated for acute pancreatitis. Anything I could actually ingest, even calf’s brains, would have been the food of the gods. Things really are relative.

Salchicha Huachana. Pork sausage with anchiotti oil, cumin, paprika, garlic, vinegar, salt, pepper and Pisco. Fried until broken up into little pieces, add eggs and scramble. On fresh bread

You know, I do feel bad for the people that have lost their jobs due to outsourcing and all that. I do but as Coates article explained yesterday, racial minorities have been far more adversely impacted by that and they didn’t embrace Trump. And no one including Sanders is telling us to address them. As Coates said, there’s a part of the left that wants us to ditch our support of minority groups under the pretext of ending identity politics to embrace another form of identity politics. And as another Lizard put it yesterday, they want us again to tell racial minorities like we did in the New Deal that their concerns have to take a backseat to the WWC.

Both my parents really found the Coates article provoking. Dad and I had a good conversation about how as white men after things like OKC or the mass shooters, our culture isn’t told that we need to condemn the acts and all that. We both agreed that’s part of what it means to have white privilege where being of the same demo group of a mass murderer doesn’t mean we have to have the values of our cultural group scrutinized by the media.

Maybe that’s pressure on Congress about DACA maybe it’s about the possible indictments or impeaching. Maybe we have to be patient and it’s a candidate like Eric Garcetti or Kamala Harris.

How I tend to stay sane in this mess that this country seems to be in is to be aware of what’s going on, but also understand what you can realistically get accomplished yourself. Don’t let everything drive you nuts. There’s a balance between being aware of what’s going on, and also not making yourself go into complete despair.

Find what you can personally contribute and do that. As for me, mental health is a big deal to me, and I’ll be doing something in regards to that once I get back on my feet. Which, that should be by the end of the year.

There really has never been anyone like him. I mean for all Nixon’s fallings and man Nixon had a lot, I do think Nixon wanted to right by the country as his primary goal. He just was ruthless in whatever he did to do and did some awful things. But Trump? I think Turmp only cares about Trump and his Russian benefactors.

You folks have some amazing breakfasts in your memories and your future, I hope including tomorrow morning. We should paint the barn and do a cookbook.

I’m realizing that the experience of the meal is relative not only to circumstances like my IV experience, but also to things like geographical location.

For instance, like with DD’s Istanbul street food, I remember being kind of wrecked on a morning in Monterrey, Mexico, with not many pesos in my pocket, and wondering into this little place that specialized in goat. A small price, a slab of meat and sauce slapped into a tortilla, and heaven.

San Francisco? Don’t remember a single breakfast there, or even whether it was a thing. Of course I was there circa 1968-1971 and there is much I don’t remember.

New Orleans? I guess turtle soup at Commander’s, although that’s more of a brunch thing (but then most of my breakfasts are brunchy).

New York? Besides my own huevos rancheros, chopped pickled herring on fresh bagels (plural; I couldn’t stop eating this) with both butter and cream cheese.

Northwest Louisiana, where I am now? I’ve said it before: leftover pumpkin pie and strong coffee with rum, the key to world peace.

I guess it’s all good. For sure y’all have nominated some hall of fame candidates.

HappyWarrior  Sep 8, 2017 • 7:04:12pm

Anyhow RWC, I looked more at Mayor Garcetti. Very impressive. He has what I like in candidates: Progressive views, experience governing a diverse place, and a focus on a wide range of issues. I see him perhaps more as VP material at this point but I could definitely be persuaded more since you indictated that he’s a pretty good speaker too but I do like Harris and him.

So, it looks like the storm may end up being a direct hit on the Florida Keys after all - we should have a better look at 11pm when the next official advisory is issued. The weather folks in NYC are saying that their info is suggesting that Irma might regain enough strength to go back as a Cat 5 storm even though it’s skirting the Cuban coast. The water temps are so high that the energy it feeds into it that it might overcome the interaction with land.

This is a few hours old, but it looks like the track is going to completely thrash the Keys.

And after thrashing the Keys, it’s going to hit Naples into Tampa St. Pete. But pretty much the entire state is going to be whacked - and with the storm going to the western side of the track, there’s nowhere in Florida safe from sustained potential hurricane strength winds to say nothing of tornado damage, and the storm surge along the Gulf side will be considerable, though Miami again looks to be spared of the worst thus far.

Oh Florida

The first Americans to spend much time in South Florida were the U.S. Army men who chased the Seminole Indians around the peninsula in the 1830s. And they hated it. Today, their letters read like Yelp reviews of an arsenic café, denouncing the region as a “hideous,” “loathsome,” “diabolical,” “God-abandoned” mosquito refuge.
