All the models include a cone of uncertainty - everything within the 1, 3, and 5 day forecasts put that possibility in play. The models from a couple days ago had the Florida keys getting a direct hit and then the models shifted to the East. Now, they’re heading back west. Either way, the entire state is getting hammered - the difference is that Miami might get spared the worst, while the Keys get obliterated and Naples-Tampa St Pete see the brunt.

I don’t think so because of the way Northern Hemisphere Hurricanes rotate. The air traveling inwards over the Florida landmass from the Northeast will slow down, decreasing pressure on that side as high pressure air rushes in from the West to try and fill the extremely low pressure in the Eye, causing Irma to be pushed North and hug the Western Florida coast all the way up.

Oh geez…

The latest update from the US National Hurricane Center, which is monitoring Hurricane Jose, due to hit the already stricken islands of Barbuda and Anguilla on Saturday, says it is close to becoming a category 5 storm.

Jose is currently 265 miles (430km) from the Leeward Islands, with wind speeds of 155mph (250kph).

I saw a video earlier from Saint Martin, of the webcam on Maho Beach (the famous/infamous beach at the head of the airport runway, where beachgoers are overflown by landing passenger jets). The destructive force was beyond incredible. Maho is trashed, by the way, but the airport seems to have survived with relatively less damage.

When I went to Death Valley I acquired this wicked desire to experience more kinds of extreme weather. Bring the story to my friends. That particular evening that weather excluded the cameras because of blowing grit and debris. Midnight at 100+ temps and freeway expensive ticket speed wind was one of the most exhilarating experiences ever for me. I can see why they stayed for it dangerous as that is.

January 1st. For news I talk to the guys at my dispensary. The big green gold rush is on. Stores catering to growers cropping up. Lots of folks finding a way to participate in the rush. Just a little concerned about Sessions and ATF. The option to buy for cash no names involved is huge. Having a MM card and keeping a job or a bond, or clearance, or a gun is all in conflict for the foreseeable.

It’s just not fair my horticultural expert wife, all trained up can’t be in the same room with it. Ironically, certain Orchid growers are trying cannabis growing technology to make better flowers to just admire. What a world/.

I feel conflicted after we had a live performance by a folk/western singer-guitar player tonight at the village community centre. I also still can’t get hold of my son in Jacksonville.

The car shop called today at 4:30 to say our Smart is fixed (yay). Too late to go get it. They are closed tomorrow, so I get to wrestle with the insurance adjuster over paying for the USS Ford Expedition for the weekend.

I was left wondering if I did a good thing or a bad thing.

After our Internet service came back after its regularly scheduled unscheduled outage, I got an E-mail from Humanities Nebraska saying the fellow would be at the diner.

Neither Humanities Nebraska nor our diner pay much for performers.

So my wife and I showed up an hour late, but did show up, had dinner and enjoyed some music. Someone told the fellow playing yesterday was my wife and my tenth wedding anniversary, so he dedicated a song to us.

Having been myself on the back side of a musician’s tip jar before when I played hammered dulcimer in public, I noted the fellow’s tip jar was empty.

I walked up and pitched $6 into it. I don’t know if the other wealthy ranchers and such simply did not know what the jar was for, or they were shamed by the poorest guy in town leaving him a tip, suddenly there was a rush of people putting $50’s and $100’s into his jar. (Fortunately this is a safe area because that much money is a good way to get mugged when you walk out of a place with it.)

In the meantime, I still can’t get hold of my son in Jacksonville (voicemail full on his cell phone). I drove to a place where I could get cell service and sent him a text from my burner phone since I could leave him no messages, in case he needs assistance or a place to stay (we ought to be safe here).

Camp Lejeune. Butterbar decided to take a shortcut because he got tired of waiting for a convoy to pass and decided to jump over a concrete barricade on his morning run.

The barricade was to block people from falling into a 30ft dropoff for storm run off

Most wireless carriers allow you to send text messages to their subscribers by email. So if your son is on Verizon, for instance, you can send a message to xxxxxxxxxx@vzwpix.com (where those ten x’s are the wireless number) and it will arrive as SMS on his phone. More info here.

Point is, you can send him a text without having to drive out of town to get cell service. (And having driven I-70/76 south of you through Ogallala and Sterling over the summer, I get a new sense of just how remote you are!)

We had a friend whose house and barns suddenly had bullets raining on them like hail. He grabbed his gun and jumped in his vehicle and took off, chased down some kids who had been parked quite a long way away, and “accosted” them. Of course, he was arrested. We drove up to act as “character” witnesses. After all, he had grandchildren and valuable livestock and vehicles all at risk. I believe the whole thing eventually petered out, but he and his family were stressed beyond measure. Just kids being kids. ///

I’m sitting here watching the FEMA morning briefing on Hurricane Irma with Grinning Tom Price and director Brock Long while they are speaking of 8,000 FEMA employees advance deployed and commodities (food, water, medicine) staged from Florida to North Carolina. They’re speaking of evacuating electricity dependent medical patients, evacuation routes, and other issues that professionals discuss preparing for landfall of major hurricane.

Over the last several weeks, elected officials in Texas and Florida have actually conducted themselves as adults, taking responsibility and using their authority (and government coffers) to serve their constituents. The weakest person I’ve seen is Greg Abbott who has played a very small role compared to Houston mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris Country judge Ed Emmett, staying pretty much in the background, showing up only to suck up to Cheeto Jesus while he grandstanded during his two brief and embarrassing appearances here in Texas.

Speaking of embarrassing, Donald Trump. His performance during his cringe-inducing visits (accompanied by his wife impersonating Michael Jackson in those silly caps and shades) were nothing short of embarrassing. Thank God he left to go play golf immediately after instructing shelter victims to “have a great time”.

While there is certainly a ton more Facebook activity by the Russian government than the $100K figure conveys I kind of doubt investigators are going to find a huge undiscovered sum of paid advertising. Simply because the nature of this kind of warfare is that the ideas being seeded and amplified are only really effective when they appear to be propagating organically. Paid ads would tend to undermine those efforts if they started to appear too frequently.

That’s a good point. I do think that most online advertising (especially on social media platforms) still aims to ‘blend’. Also, the folks they were targeting aren’t that savvy at recognizing it for what it is IMO. And even if they do, I don’t think it’s perceived in the traditional sense because it’s just newer to them.

There is a new procedure for treating Dupuytren’s Contractures, that involves injecting a drug that softens the contractures, and later the doc straightens your fingers and snaps them. No surgery is involved, but it requires a specially-trained doctor with the medication (so s/he doesn’t do something like inject it into a tendon and screw that up).

Otherwise, it’s painful surgery (I’m sorry about that). I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. (And while your hand recovers, it is subject to injury very easily, as my car/deer wreck did - it ripped the still healing incision open.)

Well, I don’t know how to capture GIF images in Windows 10, which seems to have been made intentionally more difficult than Windows XP. At any rate, Hurricane Irma has moved past the Camaguey Islands in Cuba back into the water, and if I could get this thing to loop, you would see that the hurricane is expanding in area.

Jose is to the right, moving toward the Leeward Islands, but in the last couple frames starts turning more NW so at the moment it appears they will be spared a second direct strike from a major hurricane in one week… .

It is said just about anything can be found on the Web, and wouldn’t you know it, there is a fan-fic page for fictional hurricanes. There is one there named after me:

The tropical wave produced a tropical depression at around 0045 hours UST on July 9, and in 12 hours, it intensified into a tropical storm. It was given a name: James. There are all sorts of videos on YouTube now claiming this atheist or that atheist “left atheism” (we’re a movement, apparently) because of the various hurricanes now (because no one ever sees destructive hurricanes near the peak of hurricane season).

I suspect none of these atheists are really so. (A strawman atheist who can instantly be knocked down with an argument of “three hurricanes, therefore God”—no atheist I ever met.)

What a sad example of a person’s religious faith when he has to set up a strawman atheist and lie about him to support his faith.

Wingnut Ray Comfort (Banana Man) is an example here. In four minutes he “converts” his atheist, “proving” to him not only there is a god, but his God.

Ray Comfort is behind the hide bar in a 4:15 video. I haven’t heard of any pastor anywhere from a pulpit call out these charlatans … or take to YouTube to do so.

Irma looks to be solidifying its track towards Key West and to strike all along the Western coast of Florida. People who thought they could evacuate to Tampa from Miami are waking up to see that they may have evacuated directly into the path of this storm.

There’s no escaping a storm of this size and magnitude - it’s just bigger than the entire state, and everyone in the state will feel its effects no matter the ultimate track.

So what’s Trump’s decided to do?

Cuba has been absolutely hammered by Irma overnight, with the eye making landfall there - the first cat 5 storm (yeah, it strengthened again to cat 5) to hit in nearly 100 years.

As of the 8am update: 130 mph sustained winds. That’s from the interaction with Cuba, but the storm is going to spend several hours over extremely warm water between Cuba and the Keys, so it will strengthen once again.

At least Jose looks to be heading NW-NNW and will spin away from doing more damage to the Caribbean.

So I went and saw “It” last night. My two cents:

As a stand-alone horror(-lite) movie, it was enjoyable; if you liked Stranger Things, I think you’d feel right at home with It (the casting of one of the young ST actors and the time-shifting of the story to the 80’s make comparisons to the show inevitable). The new iteration of Pennywise was creepy but, for me at least, never quite made the jump to outright scary. The writing and direction were solid and the cast was good, especially the young actress who played Beverly. Overall, it was a solid film when taken as it’s own thing.

As an adaptation of one of my all-time favorite novels…(light spoilers ahead!)

the movie fell flat for me. The time-shifting wasn’t a major obstacle for the story, but they made some inexplicable changes to the character’s backstories that are going to require some serious re-juggling in part 2 and reduced the character of Mike Hanlon to a glorified extra.

But where I think they really dropped the ball was ignoring the role that belief played in the novel.

It targeted children because of their belief in monsters and things that go bump in the night and fed on the fear that flowed from that belief. But that same power of belief that It fed off of was a double-edged sword and was what allowed the Losers’ Club to fight It; i.e. if you believe in werewolves, you also believe that a silver bullet will kill it. Ignoring the power that belief played in the novel reduced Pennywise to a run-of-the-mill movie monster and left the confrontation with the Losers’ to become a simple, uninteresting beatdown.

Overall, while I think they hit a lot of the story points, they whiffed on it’s heart and soul and on what made it such an interesting read.

Something about race and this whole election just makes some people painfully obtuse. Like…I get TNC isn’t going out of his way for election analysis or campaign advice. At the same time, it should be fairly easy to read between the lines when he points out just how much the vote this time around fractured around blatant racial lines, as well as how the popular post-mortems immediately after have almost no basis in fact, and every basis in the same narrative that has lead to the dismissal and erasure of non-white contributions in the political sphere.

Yes, we need to win elections. The problem is that the unicorn being chased after the hardest happens to be the same fucking horse people have been riding forever with a coat of paint over it. It’s not new, it’s not the magic bullet, and it’s taking the most reliable voting population for the Dems for granted and far too often leaving them out in the cold.

Well, to be fair, what he says is true. But it doesn’t go far enough in describing the total absence of any policy goals. You know, like “everyone’s healthcare is better”. He doesn’t care about that. Just “Obamacare is ended”. He’d sign ANY bill that did that.

The ‘deal’ he just cut with Schumer and Pelosi - literally because he was tired of the argument and couldn’t follow it. And he hates McConnell and Ryan for not giving him a chance for a photo op to wave in Obama’s face.

It’s the first time I’ve ever had a sprain, and truth be told? It was a long time coming. I’m just glad it didn’t happen at Coachella or in Japan 2 years ago, because I did take some risks that would have landed the same result.

I am angry at the original podiatrist who misdiagnosed my ankle. Every follow-up I had with him I told him that it is not recovering as well as it should and his response was that I should be “patient”. I went to another podiatrist because I got fed up and the new one suggested that I get a MRI done because 7 months is excessive and should have been healed up in 2 months time. After the MRI was done, it was determined that I had a piece of cartilage that broke off upon impact and suffered a bone bruise which was hindering the recovery process. Why my original podiatrist didn’t suggest that I get a MRI done after 5 months into the recovery stage, I will find out when I call him next week and show my anger over it. It also doesn’t help that the original podiatrist was also stupid enough to admit to me he voted for Trump because he hated Hillary *facepalm

In addition, the original podiatrist kept insisting that orthotics will help with the neuroma on my right foot…even though I told him countless times that the orthotics are pointless when I go fucking barefoot on hard floor surfaces, such as concrete or wood even. It was amplified when I would go to a water park and walk barefoot on wet concrete with my foot slightly curled to lessen the impact on the ball of my foot when walking. He seems to be the type of moron that insists orthotics cures all, when in reality it’s merely a bandaid for situations like me.

He’s in Highland Park in Dallas so no surprise why he would admit his vote for Trump too, so that’s more ammunition for me when I go off on him.

Going on to the surgery, the surgeon and staff injected a calcium material into the affected area in the left ankle and when the neuroma was excised from my right, it appears that the excision was done on the bottom as opposed to the top. So that surprised me.

I’ll be out 2 weeks from work as I can’t even get up to to the bathroom without assistance from others. That’s the worst part as I’m normally very self-sufficient but find myself needing help for basic tasks. Puts a dent to my ego and my pride but what can you do? It is what it is.

Yep, very true. He wasn’t a bad podiatrist when I first visited him for my neuroma. To his credit, he helped me understand what to look for when purchasing shoes as I’ve been very ignorant in the past years of wearing ill-fitted shoes. And the orthotics did help with the shoes on, so all isn’t lost.

But the ankle and the amount of time passed was the final draw for me. I had my doubts about it after he admitted voting for Trump (but I decided to give the benefit of the doubt anyways). I don’t know why you’re stupid enough to admit who you voted for with your clients for God’s sake though.
