From the tweet: antifa protesters

From here on out, anyone who uses the word “antifa” on Twitter is, until proven otherwise (or unless context dictates differently), a Trump-humper.

An hour or so ago, I was doing some shopping with an elderly pal of mine who lives on my downtown Manhattan block and noticed that a couple of firefighters from the station across the street from where I live were hosing down the street.

“Whatcha doing?” I asked.

“Cleaning off the street for the ceremony tomorrow morning,” one of them replied.

And then it hit me.

How soon we forget, or at least I did.

He has no real rebuttal. So he just asserts his authority as a straight white male and it’s telling how he does it against another one. He trots out a few Breitbart keywords and reckons that should take care of his extreme lack of coherence and honesty. And I’m sure it will.

You’d need a better interviewer to nail him on this. And he probably wouldn’t accept the invitation.

I was in college, sleeping in in my on-campus apartment, when my phone rang (back when I had a phone that plugged into a wall and an answering machine). I ignored it and let it go to my answering machine. It was one of my neighbors, “Charlie, turn on the news now, the World Trade Center is gone and the Pentagon’s being attacked.” *click*

I’ll never forget that day.

Besides the 25+ year campaign of hate and the mainstreaming of The Paranoid Style in the right wing, 9/11 was gas on the fire. It gave them another front in a war they wanted to have: all of Islam was now a unifying enemy.

He got his license and I turned on the radio as I dropped him off. The BBC in measured tones was announcing the first strike. I thought it was some “War of the Worlds” radio theater. Then I got home and my wife was on the curb holding our three-month-old and silently crying. I knew it was real.

Being in high school on 9/11/2001, we didn’t have a ton of access to TV during school hours, and smartphones weren’t a thing yet. Nevertheless, one of my teachers had CNN on in between classes, and that was how I found out: At the time of the second strike, one of my teachers was talking to the other as I was exchanging books at my locker across the hall. I almost literally leaped across the hallway into his classroom, just in time to see the initial replay of the second impact playing on the screen. I honestly don’t remember how I made it to my seat or much of what happened for the rest of that period.

I was asleep, preparing for yet another day as a senior in high school. Little did I know the next day would not be just “another day”.

I was also asleep, dreaming of tree frogs. I’d fallen asleep with pleasant thoughts of going to J&R Records in the morning to buy Bob Dylan’s new lp, “Love and Theft,” which I’d heard was his best since “Blood On The Tracks” (and it was). When the first plane hit six blocks away there was a huge boom and a flash of light and the frogs exploded in a bright green plume. During the next two weeks or so, Dylan’s latest single, “Dignity,” was on constant rotation on NYC radio. (Not this version, but I like this one the most)

I remember kind of laughing when I heard in my car on the way to work that a plane had hit the WTC building. I pictured it as a small private plane and thought ‘what a dumb mistake’.

I had to drive to a meeting that morning so I was listening to the radio most of the morning and watching video of the towers collapsing while having lunch at McDonalds.

When I got back to work, there was a TV set up in a common area right next to my work station. The office was right across the street from the MN state capitol so we all kept looking at the building afraid of what could happen next.

Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines  Sep 10, 2017 • 6:15:26pm

I remember what an utter ass Bryant Gumbel made of himself during the 9-11 attacks. He refused to believe the crashes had been deliberate and argued with witnesses on the street even after the second plane had hit. He suggested that an air traffic control error was responsible and complained about incompetence, including that of the pilots who were stupid enough to fly right into a building just because a machine told them to. I think he destroyed his career that day. His sports show survives but he left CBS a few months after 9-11 and has not returned to a major network or to real news programming.

At this time on September 10, 2001, I was getting ready to publish a post about the best placement of elements on a web page.

I was on my way to work listening to Howard Stern and Robin interrupted him about a fire at the World Trade Center. That was right when I got in the Metro station and lost the radio signal. When I came out both towers were on fire, walked 2 blocks to work, got my desk on line and an alarm went off in the building. We got a call to go home right after the Pentagon was hit. I had workers spouses calling scared for us because they were afraid someone would also crash into the First Interstate Tower. Friend drove me home because Metro was shut down. Then I put on CNN when I came home and was gobsmacked…

An immigrant from Western Australia to the USA writes about a little-known loophole long-extant in US immigration law.

Any church can hire any person in the world they feel qualified for their church, no immigrant worker visas required. The argument in immigration law is “religious freedom.”

Said laws also allow a person working for a church to jump straight to the front of the immigration line. They also apply to family members.

He writes how his father came as a worker to a fundamentalist church in South Carolina under the church worker programme. At the time, he was in the USA on a student visa studying journalism, but when his family arrived on the church exemption, they applied for his US citizenship.

huffingtonpost.com

To a legalist conservative, he just “followed immigration law.”

Back in those days, I had my clock radio wake me up and it was set to 5:57 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (aka Pacific Daylight Time). I woke up to someone at NPR saying a plane had crashed into the WTC. I bounced out of bed and ran to the TV and got it warmed up in time to see the second plane hit the WTC.

But I still had to go to work. It was unsettling to go to the job, which was in the flight path of Sky Harbor airport, and not hear any planes, because they were grounded. The next two days were surreal in that way as well.

I remember calling my dad in the middle of the day, after the towers fell, and just the sheer awe in his voice describing what he’d seen on TV. He’d helped repair the big telephone switch in one of the sub basements of the WTC in 1993 (after that bombing) and was simply awestruck that those huge buildings came crashing down.

The Sunday after 9/11 I melted down and threw a hissy fit at the Episcopal church I was attending because an American flag had been folded like a wreath around the processional cross in the narthex. I refused to go into the church until the wreath was gone, because people of other nationalities had died in the WTC. But man, the “christian” nationalism has been just simply obnoxious over the last 16 years.

Well, I was at work at the Texas Dept. of Health office in Lubbock. The news started coming out — I assumed it was a small plane (I actually told people about the B-25 that crashed into the Empire State Building in 1945), but we eventually pulled out the TVs all over the building and all hunkered around them for an hour.

Our new director, a guy who didn’t like Lubbock and didn’t really understand human psychology, eventually told everyone watching TV wasn’t important to our jobs. I’m sure everyone else read news online for the rest of the day.

66
Anymouse 🌹  Sep 10, 2017 • 6:45:29pm

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK
———————————————
At 800 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the center of Hurricane Irma was located
by NOAA Doppler radar near latitude 26.7 North, longitude 81.7 West.
Irma is moving toward the north near 14 mph (22 km/h), and a
north-northwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is
expected by tonight, with that motion continuing through Monday. On
the forecast track, the eye of Irma should move near or over the
west coast of the Florida Peninsula through Monday morning. Irma
should then move inland over northern Florida and southwestern
Georgia Monday afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 105 mph (165 km/h)
with higher gusts. Although weakening is forecast, Irma is expected
to remain a hurricane at least through Monday morning.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from
the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 220
miles (350 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 942 mb (27.82 inches).

The article notes the restaurant industry itself favours the rules regarding noting calories in food and such.

Conservatives have been after the rule ever since it was proposed in 2010. Even if they are successful in striking down the rule, there is nothing to prohibit restaurants from complying anyway.

I would guess that a lot of restaurants would consider that a marketing tool (we’re telling you what you’re getting).

That’s something similar to the wingnut SC congressman arguing that restaurants should not be required to put up signs saying their employees must wash their hands before returning to work. As a customer, I sure wouldn’t go to a restaurant that didn’t require that.

Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines  Sep 10, 2017 • 7:13:13pm

My aerial photographer friend and I had been planning to shoot some photo orders on the afternoon of 9-11-01. These would mostly be of construction sites around Texas Tech. The mandatory grounding order, the only one in history, put an end to that. We decided to go to the airport anyway, I suspect at least partly because we wanted to see how the unprecedented situation was playing out. It was bizarre, business as usual in many ways but not a plane flying. Our Cessna 172 was sitting on the ramp, fueled and ready to go. I sat in the pilot’s seat. For the first time in my life, I realized that I couldn’t just start it up, call the tower, and fly off into the still summer sky. If I did call somehow, permission would certainly have been refused, and I probably would have been arrested. Perhaps it’s only in retrospect but I think I felt a certain foreboding at this loss of freedom, small though it was.

Bannon is this year’s hatefilled, disheveled version of Karl Rove. Everyone at the time thought he was some sort of genius and it turned out he was just a dumb schmuck in the right place at the right time.

Instant Pot advice: when cooking chili, cook the dry beans first, then add everything else after they’re cooked and set the bad boy on Slow Cook High. Results in chunkier chili rather than the soup you get if you cooked everything all at once.

My preference is to have the beans available for those who want them.

As for 9/11/2001, I had an 8 am class followed by two free periods which began at 8:50 — four minutes after the first strike. I remember being in the main office when one very distraught student came in to tell us an airplane had hit the WTC. We set up a TV to watch the coverage.

Fourth period began about 30 minutes after the two towers had collapsed. We went through the motions of having class, but none of us were in any condition to take it seriously. Everyone was shell-shocked.

As I recall, after lunch we had a whole-school meeting to discuss the attacks, and there was early dismissal right afterward.

9/11/01:
I was on the phone with one of my college crushes and friend who played for the Patriots at the time. Tuesday is generally the off day for the NFL so that’s why we could chat for a while that morning. We both had the Today Show on and were in awe as we saw the 2nd tower hit by the plane. All of his family started calling because the attacking flights were originating on the East Coast where he was, while California was the destination and that’s where he’s from. He’d flown that route a bunch of times.

I worked for one of the Pittsburgh Steelers who ran his non-profit and marketing outfit out of Southfield, the suburb of Detroit. I drove to work super confused knowing I’d be the only one there. Everybody else had gone to Pittsburgh in anticipation of that weekend’s game; a game wouldn’t happen that weekend.
Once I got to the office, the 4th plane went down in that Pennsylvania field which really spooked everybody in Pitt. Phone lines got weird but one of my bosses got thru and we were just in complete shock. They wanted to get back home, back to Michigan and weren’t sure how and when and it was all just this stew of confusion.

I left the office early that afternoon with weird anxiety and met 2 of my girlfriends at one of their lofts in downtown Detroit. Very urban and industrial area. It felt oddly safe. We smoked a joint, tried to process all of this stunning information and stayed glued to the TV. We all hated Dubya with the fire of a thousand suns and all of us remarked at how good it was to see him when he finally surfaced. Weird. Surreal. Imaginations going wild. Anything could happen next.

My crazy aunt went back further, first saying that the end of the world was coming in 1961 because Kennedy was the antichrist. Moved to 1964, Watts Riots were the signal, Moved to 1966 because the Birchers said LBJ was going to surrender the US to Russia, then she got into the Armstrongs who said the end was coming in 1975. Next it was moved to 1981 when Greece joined the Common Market making it the 10th member (Ten toes of Daniel) and Sadat was the Antichrist until he was shot, then she said it was going to be in 1988 because that was 7 years after Greece entered the Common Market, then 1993 because Bill Clinton was the antichrist and on…and on…and on with the bullshit…

There is indeed plenty of stuff inspired by him and their relationship in the show. I just try to see the young David as a chimera.

Instant Pot advice: when cooking chili, cook the dry beans first, then add everything else after they’re cooked and set the bad boy on Slow Cook High. Results in chunkier chili rather than the soup you get if you cooked everything all at once.

Local police officer charged in Scotts Bluff County with stealing from a programme called “Shop with a Cop.” The programme provides underprivileged children with gifts to give to family members.

starherald.com

A former Gering Police sergeant has been charged in Scotts Bluff County Court, accused of stealing from a program that provides kids with gifts for their family members.

According to Scotts Bluff County Court documents, Henry Moreno, 40, has been charged with three counts of theft by taking, a Class II misdemeanor.

An arrest affidavit was not filed in the case, but the complaint states that Moreno took different amounts from the Shop with a Cop program on three separate occasions: $500 in August 2016; $300 in March 2017; and $500 in June 2017.

Moreno was issued a citation on Sept. 6 by Doug Warner, a deputy attorney with the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. Moreno is scheduled to appear in Scotts Bluff County Court on Sept. 22.

The Oklahoma Republican state rep who was caught with a minor boy in a hotel room has Federal charges added to the state charge. The guy ran specifically ran as a “champion of conservative family values” and was a supporter of Donald Trump. (More at the link …)

Oklahoma’s Ralph Shortey now faces four federal counts for transporting child pornography, producing child pornography, and child sex trafficking. Court documents allege that Shortey sent videos involving a “prepubescent girl” and young boys from his phone and a personal email account.

Shortey, who once touted himself to voters as a champion of conservative family values, was arrested in March after police found him in a motel room with a teenage boy and drugs. After the boy told Shortey he needed money, documents show that Shortey sent him a message asking, “Would you be interested in ‘sexual’ stuff?”

After that bust, Shortey was charged with three felonies, including child prostitution. He resigned after the arrest.

But before being caught, Shortey was an early backer of Trump’s presidential campaign. In 2015, the official Trump presidential campaign announced that he was among a group of leaders endorsing Trump’s run. Around the same time as his prostitution arrest, Shortey took a photo of himself alongside Donald Trump Jr., who was campaigning on his father’s behalf.

I can’t really figure that satellite out—I’m just going with my local weather guru, Ed Piotrowski.

10:15pm - Some of you are hearing Irma has taken a turn to the northeast. It hasn’t. It’s been moving north and wobbling along the way. Recent radar images show Irma is moving NNW and will eventually turn northwest as low pressure along the Gulf coast drags it away from us. Despite being hundreds of miles away from us Monday and Monday night, we will still get some fringe effect. Many areas will get rounds of heavy rain tomorrow afternoon and night that could total 1-4”. It will get increasingly windy with gusts near 45 mph in the afternoon, evening and at night. Winds will persistently blow at 30-40 mph so that’s no picnic. Still much better than what Florida is getting.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Another year in the books on this 9/11. It’s a day in NYC not unlike that fateful day all those years ago. The region has its commemorations and memorials, and there’s a new memorial built in Hoboken that will be dedicated later this morning.

The memorials need to keep adding names though. The list of the dead grows with each passing year as first responders die from 9/11-related exposures. The GOP denied and delayed assistance to these responders despite the clear links to various cancers and exposure at The Pile or over at Fresh Kills where debris was sorted and checked for human remains. Hundreds of firefighters, police, and other responders have been sickened by the exposure, despite the EPA claiming that the air was safe to breath.

Anyone who walked around Lower Manhattan knew that to empirically be a lie. The air was thick with a sickening smell that lingered for months. It was a smell that comes from burning metal and godknows what.

The GOP treated those responders as disposable heroes, and delayed permanent funding for the Zadroga Act. Yet they continue to support the GOP despite the fact their own were treated like crap. I see the same pattern again with the Harvey and Irma environmental damage, where the EPA claims the air/water are safe, and yet they’re not letting people know what toxins were released.

The WTC complex itself is once again a thriving business hub, with a gleaming white mall, PATH transit hub, and the tallest skyscraper in the US. There’s still construction left to be done, as 2WTC and the performing arts center are yet to be built, but otherwise most of the site is open to the public and/or open for business.

Unlike past years, I wont be blogging 9/11 (besides this post). In fact, I’ve decided to discontinue the blogging format altogether. But I strung together this tweet thread about 9/11…

Hss anyone heard about Trump making a big deal out of voter fraud claims in New Hampshire?

I saw where some people were beginning to be outraged late last week. This morning I did a Google search and it seems like it is going to be a thing this week.

Of course this is all the doing of Kobach and his voter commision.

Isn’t this all just a recycling of an old rumor? Just more distraction and feed for the wingnuts.

A bit of the report from NBC news this morning:

NBC News - Trump Claims Vote Fraud in New Hampshire. His Commission Is Going There

Trump’s vote fraud panel is coming to New Hampshire on Tuesday for its second public meeting, only days after the commission’s vice-chair amplified the president’s baseless claims in an op-ed that illegal voting had possibly swayed the election in the state.

“It has long been reported, anecdotally, that out-of-staters take advantage of New Hampshire’s same-day registration and head to the Granite State to cast fraudulent votes,” Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state, wrote on Breitbart last week.

He added that it is “possible that New Hampshire’s four Electoral College votes were swung to Hillary Clinton through illegal voting by nonresidents.”

Experts countered that there’s no evidence of significant fraud.

“New Hampshire is central to President Trump’s first claim of widespread voter fraud,” said Jonathan Brater, counsel with the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, which examines voting rights issues.

“There’s really no evidence of widespread fraud in New Hampshire, but that has not stopped some people from inflating the potential for voter fraud,” he added.

The accusation that people have been bused in from nearby states has been around since at least the mid-1990s, said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley.

“This is a lie that they have convinced themselves because they have not been able to process that Democrats win in New Hampshire,” Buckley told NBC News. “You would think after 20 years of saying it, if it was true, that one of them would have taken a picture of one of the buses. It’s a farce.”

Why is it nuts? Police forces are home to many who have total contempt for minorities. The GOP is fine with Tamir Rice, and all the other deaths of African Americans by authorities. The police prefer having moral support of those who applaud their shoot first and ask questions later mentality than financial support of those who prefer they use weapons as a last resort instead of a first resort.

I was a senior in HS and in the morning in was in a special entrepreneurship school where I as the senior was in charge since the teacher was out for the day (he was the football coach as well). Since I was in charge I said to everyone (before the planes hit) that they knew what they needed to do and that I was not baby sitting them. I then left for breakfast. When I got my food from the fast food place they told me a plane hit one of the World Trade Towers. Didn’t believe them. Went home, turned on the TV, saw the 2nd plane hit. Called my school and told them I wasn’t coming in. They were OK with it.

Side note: my father is a branch manager at a stock brokerage branch (at the time Morgan Stanley - whose offices were in the towers) and was suppose to be in the towers when they were hit but they changed his meeting time to October. My father stayed at the hotel in the Twin Towers in 1999 and still have the hotel room key with the towers printed on it. Just out of luck my father wasn’t there that day.

My mother on the other hand was in DC lobbying for education funding and was stuck in DC for a month. She didn’t see any of the carnage first hand luckily.

Speaking as someone from outside the Muslim community, so forgive me if I sound clueless, but I’ve noticed a real surge lately in young Muslimas pushing back against stereotypes and sexism. There’s Malala, of course, but also Noor Tagouri, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Ohareeba and Noor Unnahar Siddiqui in Pakistan, Ysra Mardini, and many more. I follow all them on Instagram and Twitter, and they take a lot of heat from traditionalists in their own faith community who don’t the way they dress, act and opine. Well, the National Hurricane Center now has Jose doing a slow loop then a beeline in the direction of the central Florida coast. (Still too early to tell if Florida is the target.)

Irma is now a tropical storm though it still has hurricane-force winds over the Gulf and near Jacksonville.

Protein Links Alcohol Abuse and Changes in Brain’s Reward Center

Though it is legal and easily obtained, alcohol remains an unusual and mysterious drug on a scientific level. Researchers still don’t know how ethanol - a tiny molecule that, unlike all other drugs of abuse, does not have a specific site of action - can alter brain function to promote compulsive, uncontrolled consumption and alcohol-seeking despite negative consequences.

His stupid fucking commission is coming tomorrow. By the way, I saw the bus of fraudsters at the State Liquor and Wine store on I-93 picking up duty-free booze on their way to the polling stations. ////

Further noted - the GOP blocked funding for Zadroga Act for years, and then delayed on making Zadroga Act permanent. For all their talk about supporting LEOs and first responders, the GOP treats them as disposable heroes.

Despite all this, GOP gets continued support from law enforcement. It’s nuts.

That’s because, for all the “help” Democrats want to give to law enforcement, they expect LEOs to act reasonably and be responsible for their actions. And that’s just too much to ask.
