The only person I had seen dress like that was Michael Stipe in the early 1980s. He and Peter Buck came to my freshman comp class to talk about songwriting. Stipe had on two pairs of jeans and two long-sleeve shirts. Buck was wearing a tuxedo shirt that made me think he hadn’t changed after a gig.

I doubt there’s a connection to Bannon.

Female-Led “Greatest American Hero” Reboot Lands at ABC (goes to Hollywood Reporter)

A female-led reboot of the beloved ’80s series has landed at ABC with a hefty put pilot commitment, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The single-camera, half-hour comedy remake follows Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland, whose talents include tequila drinking and karaoke and not much else. Then some aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet, and the world has never been in more unreliable hands.

The original series was an hourlong and starred a white male actor (William Katt) in the lead role. The show, also known for its catchy theme song, debuted on ABC in 1981 and ran for three seasons.

Well, there is the problem that millions more live in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina than in the US Virgin Islands.

That said, the territory is also American and ignoring its plight emphasises again that an American living in a territory is more like a second-class citizen.

Perhaps USVI should get attention by applying for statehood.

My son almost always wears two layers but it has to do with his mental health issues and it makes him feel more comfortable to wear his pajamas under his regular cloths. I don’t care so long as I can get him to change cloths once in awhile… O_o

It should. The Constitution doesn’t allow for a right to vote for people in territories though. The news media doesn’t treat a territory with 100,000 people the same as a state (Florida) 20,000,000 (two hundred time the USVI).

A great amount of the “non-violence” calls are for optics. The GOP doesn’t care about optics. Condemn those who are violent as not part of the broader movement, and move on.

The martial arts teach that your main objective in a fight is to incapacitate your opponent as quickly as possible. I think that’s the philosophy of krav maga, at least.

Watching the video, it was either going to take the police or a serious injury to stop the fight. Like you, I’m glad the injury wasn’t to the head. I also think the guy had a right to defend himself.

There are absolutely no details in this. The fight is in progress when the video starts for all we know it was an argument over parking spot or something stupid. As for “suspected white supremacist” I’d like a little evidence of that too. Where did this happen, when did it happen, can I look up a local news report. All I see are two guys fighting and one guy almost getting his neck broken.

US-CERT (Homeland Security’s division regarding cyber crime and software weaknesses) has an E-mail list for warnings.

This just popped up in my box. I don’t know anything about Bluetooth or the so-called Internet of Things since I don’t own such devices, so I don’t know if it is important to people who own fantasy-story items like cell phones or refrigerators that talk to computers.

Original release date: September 12, 2017
US-CERT is aware of a collection of Bluetooth vulnerabilities, known as BlueBorne, potentially affecting millions of unpatched mobile phones, computers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. A remote attacker could exploit several of these vulnerabilities to take control of affected devices.
US-CERT recommends that users and administrators read Vulnerability Note VU#240311 for more information.

The linked Vulnerability Note at US-CERT seems to call out a great number of vulnerabilities in Bluetooth, for which Microsoft (Windows), Android, iOS, and Linux kernel now have available patches.

They also note at that release:

Check with your device manufacturer to determine if firmware updates will be available.

Phones and other mobile devices in the US running Android are likely to see delayed updates, or possibly never receive updates, due to the complexity of the US mobile ecosystem which typically requires manufacturer and carrier support to push updates.

If an update is not available, affected users should consider the following workaround

Disable Bluetooth on your device

Affected users should consider disabling Bluetooth on affected devices if Bluetooth is unused or unnecessary.

The Salt Lake City nurse that was assaulted by a police officer made the national news, because of the abuse of police authority, not the assault.

The Washington Post article has a number of dangerous encounters nurses had over the past few months that didn’t get much coverage, perpetrated by patients. Those would be the encounters that were reported on. (There were likely more.)

Part of the problem with politics is people focus on grand themes and not the nitty-gritty of issues. You can absolutely run a campaign on, for example, “Medicare for All” (which fits on a bumper sticker) while writing the plans on how to implement that.

Just got another US-CERT message referencing the bluetooth problem I noted above. Microsoft has now come out with fixes for a wide array of its software in updates, and Adobe has out now fixes for several Adobe programs that run in Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Chrome OS.

The Bluetooth vulnerability apparently allows an attacker to overtake your operating system through the exploit in Bluetooth.

I’m off to do the appropriate updates to my computer, if for some reason I disappear.

Well, that’s what she did this time. And not for the first time- after writing a letter asking Hillary to run, she withheld her endorsement until the Democratic convention.

As for how the GOP runs against this, the California single-payer bill was estimated to cost $200 billion per year. (California’s entire state budget is about $125 billion for 2017-18.) Extrapolate that to the federal level, and your annual cost is something around $1.5 trillion. (By comparison, all income taxes levied by Uncle Sam raised $1.37 trillion in fiscal 2014.)

One, five zero zero, zero zero zero, zero zero zero, zero zero zero dollars. Per year. Think the Republicans can’t campaign successfully against that? Check the results of elections for the last 40 years.

I do know if everyone had what I did, they wouldn’t be paying insurance premiums to a health insurance company, and facing bankruptcy from a debilitating medical condition like my sister is now over her wife’s cancer. (It is a travesty that in the wealthiest country in the world, my sister has to set up a GoFundMe account so she can pay the medical bills.)

We already run socialised medical systems (VA, military medical) and single-payer systems (Tricare/CHAMPUS, Medicare).

I don’t claim to be a good slogan writer. It would seem to me that “going bankrupt” is more important to people than “slightly higher taxes,” but maybe that’s just me. Maybe there has been too much conservative propaganda for so long that even liberals are willing to throw in the towel without trying.

The real problem is that the Federal government already spends more on medicaid, medicare, and VA per capita than the Canadian government does to provide healthcare for all. We subsidize pharmaceutical costs for the rest of the world the way we subsidize military expenditure for much of the world.

Yes, it absolutely can be done, it should be done, however the problem here is that Sanders is playing into Republican hands by refusing to be upfront and honest about estimated costs. The void in his bill where a funding mechanism should be will now be filled with GOP talking points about how the left loves to spend Americans into debt. It won’t matter that they do the same thing with military spending and slashing social programs that actually boost consumer spending because he’s needlessly handing them ammunition. They’ll finally get to write the romance novel that has been the burning desire of their long forsaken hearts—it will be a bodice ripper (they’ll be ripping Hillary’s apart with their teeth), replete with angst, the emotional underpinning of the yam they’ve come to know and love eternally make excuses for. It will have drama…and melodrama…and pivots, lots and lots of pivots.

These countries with socialized medicine may have smaller populations, but if you add them all together it’s a lot of people. 80 million in Germany, 60 million in France, 30 million in Canada, pretty soon we’re talking real numbers. Now I know they all don’t have the exact same systems but I don’t believe the fact that we’re a relatively large country being a real impediment towards solving the outrageous cost of health care.

When my brother was little, he loved to play dressing my dolls. This was over 60 years ago, and my parents may have held their breath, but they didn’t raise a fuss, and he moved on to Superman and Davy Crockett.

It did manifest in later years, however, as he became a very spiffy dresser. Perhaps that was an outgrowth of having a Herb Alpert cover band.

I just ordered a 90 supply of one of my prescriptions from Canada. 90 tablets cost me less than one tablet here.

I tried that back in the 90’s when MN started a program to let state employees import meds. The meds were seized by Homeland Security and I got a letter from them telling me to stop. When I contacted the state administrator about it, I was told to try it again. I got another letter from Homeland Security, this one much faster than the first one which led me to believe that they’ve created a file for me somewhere saying that I’m a repeat offender of trying to illegally import drugs. It pissed the hell out of me.

That was good to start. I was given a doll by my grandmother - a boy wearing farmer’s coveralls - when I complained about my sisters’ dolls. We three all played dolls.

The edit just makes it better making me remember the first time I took Dad’s copy of “Whipped Cream & Other Delights” and dropping it on the turntable.
