Conservatives continuing to lie in the face of evidence …

Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated States to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility [sic] and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. She was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery—the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits—a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?

From the summary of that document:

That in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations; while the destruction of the existing relations between the two races, as advocated by our sectional enemies, would bring inevitable calamities upon both and desolation upon the fifteen slave-holding States.

By the secession of six of the slave-holding States, and the certainty that others will speedily do likewise, Texas has no alternative but to remain in an isolated connection with the North, or unite her destinies with the South.

Bu-bu-but Texas has been making up its history for decades, and making sure that fiction is written down in the schoolbooks.

The “not about slavery” canard was holy writ in Texas History textbooks until about 1980. TH was, and is, a required 7 grade course. When I took it, my teacher was an old classmate of my mother. My mom thought she was nuts. As usual, mom was right.
The teacher was extremely devout about her subject, shedding tears when she described the Alamo, growling with anger at the demonic Santa Anna, and (most memorably) describing Confederate soldiers as “our boys” as she triumphantly recounted the defeat of some invading Yankees.

As far as my sister’s wife, my sister’s GoFundMe is not doing well. They are rapidly being financially ruined by my sister-in-law’s medical costs in connexion with her cancer. That coupled with the high cost of living in Berkeley will leave them destitute.

I feel so frustrated about this, as literally the only thing I can do is offer to them to move here because it is cheaper to live here. I do not have the kind of money it takes to support such bills.

Aside from the fact conservatives hate their relationship anyway, the GOP would quite happily let them die.

I’m not a big fan of the Libertarian Party, but even they care more about people than God’s Death Cult. I’ve noted before that though there are large differences in governmental policy between Libertarians and Democrats, those discussions would be preferable to me than anything the GOP has proposed in my lifetime.

lp.org

The Trump administration has announced that it will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, commonly known as DACA. DACA protects immigrants who came to the United States as children. Since its implementation, DACA has saved almost a million young immigrants from deportation and has allowed them to work legally in the United States.

“This is a heartless move by the Trump administration,” said Libertarian Party National Chair Nicholas Sarwark. “The recipients of DACA did nothing wrong. In fact, their parents loved them so much as to risk everything to bring them out of areas of extreme violence and poverty. They wanted a safer, better life for their children in America. How can we disparage them for that? This president shows mercy to a criminally convicted sheriff, but would toss young immigrants to the wolves for the acts of their parents? [emphasis mine] You can measure a bully based on whom they choose to pick on.”

The Libertarian Party does not support classifying undocumented immigrants, of any age, as criminals. The current U.S. immigration system is an embarrassment. People who would like to follow the legal procedures are unable to because these procedures are so complex, expensive, and lengthy.

If Americans want immigrants to enter through legal channels, we need to make those channels fair, reasonable, and accessible.

Libertarians believe that if someone is peaceful, they should be welcome to immigrate to the United States.

Straus says Confederate plaque in Capitol should be removed

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus on Tuesday said a controversial plaque in the Texas Capitol suggesting the Civil War was not fought to protect slavery should be taken down and that other monuments to the Confederacy should be reviewed for historical accuracy and tone.

“Those of us who serve on the State Preservation Board should direct staff to identify the steps necessary to remove this plaque as soon as practicable,” Straus, a Republican, said in a Facebook post. “Texans should expect to see an accurate depiction of history when they visit their state Capitol.”

Note the date, August 7 1959. There were basically two periods of hagiographic Confederate monument placement in the south, the consolidation of Jim Crow from roughly 1890 to 1930, and the reaction to the Civil Rights Movement, from 1954 (Brown vs. Board of Education) into the mid-60s.

Straus has been under attack for RINO-hood for many years. He has great backing from oil and other corporate interests, which has so far trumped the raw meat fundy love of his critics. He is a pure 1% corporate Republican rather than a “Conservative” social issues grifter, which is really more about style than substance since the objective, unlimited privilege for the fortunate, is the same in either case.

Joes Straus happens to be Jewish and religious right bigots have directly attacked him for it.

In 2010, e-mails circulated among members of the Texas State Republican Executive Committee calling for Straus to be replaced by a “Christian conservative” as Speaker, on the grounds that “we elected a house with Christian, conservative values. We now want a true Christian, conservative running it.” Straus’s opponents for the Speakership, Ken Paxton (later the Attorney General of Texas) and Warren Chisum, are Christians; both condemned the comments.

John Cook, author of some of the e-mails, said, “I want to make sure that a person I’m supporting is going to have my values. It’s not anything about Jews and whether I think their religion is right or Muslims and whether I think their religion is right. … I got into politics to put Christian conservatives into office. They’re the people that do the best jobs over all.” Cook denied allegations that he is anti-Semitic, saying that he had Jewish friends and that Jesus Christ, a Jew, is his favorite person.

Note how Cook manages to insinuate Muslims, regarded as devils among Texas fundies, into this screed.
It’s not about Republicans and their values, or Nazis and their values, I just don’t think they do the best job over all.

Inverse is playing rather fast and loose with the word “naturally”.

From the Science paper’s abstract:

Abstract
Cotton is a promising basis for wearable smart textiles. Current approaches that rely on fiber coatings suffer from function loss during wear. We present an approach that allows biological incorporation of exogenous molecules into cotton fibers to tailor the material’s functionality. In vitro model cultures of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) are incubated with 6-carboxyfluorescein-glucose and dysprosium-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid-glucose, where the glucose moiety acts as a carrier capable of traveling from the vascular connection to the outermost cell layer of the ovule epidermis, becoming incorporated into the cellulose fibers. This yields fibers with unnatural properties such as fluorescence or magnetism. Combining biological systems with the appropriate molecular design offers numerous possibilities to grow functional composite materials and implements a material-farming concept.

I’m partial to the darker scenarios. E.g., while a prosperity gospel televangelist is in mid-yowl on live TV, the floor of the megachurch disappears into the abyss, followed by a manifestation of the Gates of Hell that makes the preacher a missing person and leaves the congregation permanently terrified.

When do we get to stop being embarrassed, huh? Every time that President Donald Trump opens his lamprey mouth and shakes his semen-colored mane, it’s like another shiv in the gut while we stand in the prison shower that is the United States in 2017.

“Which group of shit-sniffing baboons is he gonna talk to this time?” we wonder. Will it be the crazed conservative hawks, the ones whose savagery make Democratic hawks look like confused parakeets? Will it be his base, whose heads are evolving into the shape of a permanent dunce cap, the one-third of the American populace who pretend they want anarchy when, really, all they want are more guns and fewer dark-skinned people? Will it be the unsatiated capitalists, the ones who would monetize child rape if they thought they could squeeze a few more pennies out of the bloodied anuses of babies? And usually, it’s all three, to varying degrees, with Trump a carnival barker yelling at the freaks and carnies to scoop up the spilled popcorn and toss it back in with the rest to sell again tomorrow.

That why they love this stuff. It’s means that they’re right by default, and don’t have to cleave to the good or love their neighbor. The other side is darker than black, in total depravity, As such, their bad behavior can be excused as necessary—such as when they lie—or forgivable—such as when they’re caught embezzling or abusing someone—because the conflict is beyond existential.

They love this enough to fatten the coffers of guys like Mike Warnke for decades. It’s porn.

Sadly, no. This is part of an attempt to change the language in order to conceal what is happening. Hundreds of hate comments like “Send the DACA kids back to rebuild their country” and “God’s wrath for sending drugs and illegals.” But remember, they’re not racists.

“Money” is particularly notable for its unusual 7/4 time signature in the verse, being the only song with this time signature to top in pop charts, its distinctive bassline, and the seven-beat “loop” of money-related sound effects that opens the track: coins clinking, a cash register ringing, etc.

7/4 time. How interesting.

Now the dresser has mold growing on the bottom.

I remember that shit. I remember hearing that children testified to the ritual slaughter of animals, including zoo animals, including a giraffe. I remember thinking how crazy it was that ANYONE would even TRY a case with that kind of shit, let alone get convictions.

Satanic panic also involved a lot of dubious interview techniques that encouraged children to fabricate and rewarded more elaborate stories. The McMartin preschool case (the one I suspect you’re remembering, because of the giraffe) propagated across the kids because of the interviews and parents feeding them details.

Subsequently, “recovered memory” techniques have also prompted and implanted more and more elaborate narrative.

And if you’re unfamiliar with Mike Warnke, he’s described on Wikipedia. His fabricated tale of being a Satanic priest, along with “Michelle Remembers,” created a bank of tropes that are still wheeled out whenever you need to set-dress your fantasy.

Again…it’s so much like porn, how it’s curated and tended and collected.

There was a really excellent demonstration of how ‘recovered’ memories really are just implanted memories, in a demonstration of how useless eyewitness testimony can be. A group staged an event, with actors and witnesses, and a couple ringers among the witnesses who planted false descriptions in peoples’ minds during the interviews after they played out the scenario. Afterwards, people swore to the false descriptions.

I found I’d done the same thing, misremembering Bubba’s ‘Shree-ump’ recital in ‘Forrest Gump’. I remembered him saying “Shree-ump Ay-too-fay”. The Younger Boy saw the movie and told me, “No, Bubba never says ‘Shree-ump Ay-too-fay’”. I’d made it up, but I can REMEMBER him saying it.

Memory is tricksy.
