And Now, a Great Tiny Desk Mini-Concert by Bleachers

Sept. 12, 2017 | Jacob Ganz — Two songs into his Tiny Desk concert, Jack Antonoff revealed a bit of stagecraft behind his performances with Bleachers.

“My manager says, ‘When you play for 1,000 people, don’t talk to one person. It’s only cool for them,’” Antonoff said. It was offered as an apology — he had just finished aiming a monologue about the link between dancing and crying at a single NPR staffer in the audience — but it was also a perfect encapsulation of the connection Antonoff’s songs create. Bleachers makes truly conversational pop, songs that sound expansive but retain a sense of intimacy, even when aimed at the masses.

At the Tiny Desk, Antonoff, along with pianist Mikey Hart and multi-instrumentalist Evan Smith, pared away much of the pomp that can turn Antonoff’s layered studio productions into neon-lit melodramas rollercoastering toward catharsis. On three songs from this year’s album Gone Now impeccably re-arranged for a smaller space, it was impossible to miss the cracked longing at the heart of Antonoff’s work.

“If you ever see Bleachers live, it’s two drum sets and it’s big and it’s kinda like this big statement that I could hide behind the tears with this big rock show. But the songs are written like this,” Antonoff said before launching into a version of the ’80s-drenched single “Don’t Take The Money” that was all feathery keyboards and spoken word verses — plus a brief quote from Queen’s 1984 hit “Radio Ga Ga. “

Not that he could resist a well-placed gimmick. “Don’t Take The Money” was the only song of the day to include drum sounds, which came from a cassette tape in a boom box over which a microphone had been draped. He started the song by hitting play on the cassette, but it took three tries to nail the ending in time with Hart. For this group, seeing the flaws is part of the charm.

Set List

“Everybody Lost Somebody”
“Don’t Take the Money”
“Foreign Girls”

Jack Antonoff (vocals, keys); Evan Smith (vocals, keys, sax); Mikey Hart (vocals, piano)

I was explaining to someone over the weekend that the thing about Kim is that he wants to be in power. He obviously loves the attention, and I don’t have any doubt that he’d attack South Korea if he thought he could get away with it, but he will not jeopardize his crown. So, as much as it will suck if he develops a bomb, the correct response is “We are watching the situation closely, and will continue to maintain our position defending our allies against any aggression.” You can’t out bluster Kim because no one has any real influence over him. What you cannot do is overreact. And that’s where I told her the problem is.

Night all, sweet scaly dreams.

Maria tore herself apart over Puerto Rico, but basically shut the island down for three months.

Will the US spend the money to save that economy?

My best guess is yes, but with much gnashing of teeth. The USVIs and PR are just devastated. They are citizens, but can’t vote. If we do nothing, they will quite literally starve to death. It’ll cost billions.

Meanwhile, the R’s want to give a $1.5 trillion tax cut for the 1%. And destroy the health care safety net in so doing.

At some point, we will just have to tell these bastards to fuck right off.

In fact, I think right now is the time.

Hell, I didn’t even know Ringo was a lefty, although it makes total sense given that we are all superior after spending our lives adapting to the cruel strictures and prejudices inflicted on us from birth by right-handers with their clumsy oxlike herd instincts.

Apparently, if I read it right upthread, he was working as a pizza delivery driver and cheaped out (read: lied by omission) by not telling SF that he was using his vehicle for commercial purposes, so, when he filed his claim for that wreck and SF found out, they denied his claim.

I don’t wish ill on most anyone, but it sucks to be him. There’s three groups in life you definitely don’t lie to or try to get one over on: the government, banks, and insurance companies; they will eventually will find you out, then you’re fucking boned.

A few years back, Quentin Skinner gave a lecture at UC Berkeley about the “genealogy of liberty”:

Quentin Skinner: “A Genealogy of Liberty”

Long but substantive.

Anyway, getting back to the debate over healthcare, I think one of the problems is that the proponents of subsidized (through taxation) healthcare don’t do a good job countering the “freedom” arguments from the libertarian types (whether or not the latter really know about that which they discuss.)

Skinner mentions Arendt, who though not at all of the ilk of today’s glibertarians, still struggled with working within the Christian/monotheism worldview (see What is Freedom?) in which she was surrounded.

I guess my point is this: it’s too hobbling to start with Hobbes and building from there.

Historically that is important (which is why I linked Skinner’s video), but it is so inadequate to really explain life.

What I find missing in the current American political discourse (among many other things), is a solid defense of the inherent value of shared responsibilities at a national level.

Too often the plea for healthcare coverage (provide by the government through taxes) relies on the pity response. (Cold as that may sound.)

This is why those who escape back to the 17th or 18th centuries (e.g., Hobbes) can so glibly wave away pleas for them to pay taxes to pay for someone else’s healthcare. It’s too easy for the glibertarian/GOP Senator to simply take the position that they will have pity on whom they will, and it is not for someone else to make them do it.

What is missing (from Sanders, the Democratic party leaders, etc.) is a solid defense of why the health of the whole (society) is so important.

And here we need to make a case why absolute liberty for an individual is not the best course of action for humans.

And that is something which also runs quite counter to the narcissism so prevalent in humans (and displayed daily by the likes of Trump.)

re: #2 Belafon

I was listening to Come Together the other day. Ringo was an amazing drummer on that song.

FTFY

The shit that Ringo gets about being a mediocre drummer is complete BS - famous drummers imitate and pay tribute to Ringo Starr

The performers, including Dave Grohl, Questlove, Stewart Copeland, Max Weinberg, Chad Smith and others, talk about Ringo’s influence, his style and try their best on some Beatles tunes!

“Four drums, that’s all Ringo Starr needed,” remarks E Street band drummer Max Weinberg.

“It’s that sloppy, swampy, falling-down-the-stairs kind of sound,” added Paul McCartney drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. “It’s the coolest thing ever.”

In defence of Ringo Starr - a masterful drummer and the Beatles’ unsung genius

He may have lacked precision and showmanship, and he did write Octopus’s Garden. But those who dismiss Ringo as a journeyman who got lucky wildly underestimate a rhythmic powerhouse

In 1983, the British comedian Jasper Carrott made an unhelpful contribution to Beatles legend when he coined a joke that would go down in history: “Ringo isn’t the best drummer in the world,” he quipped. “He isn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles.”

It resonated, to the extent that it entered into Beatles lore as the wisdom of John Lennon. That was eventually debunked by Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn - but the misrepresentation says a great deal about the public’s perception of Ringo Starr: a non-musician who got lucky, a journeyman alongside three musical geniuses.

This is total nonsense. Ringo, whose new album Give More Love has just come out, wasn’t just the funniest Beatle, the life and soul of those early press conferences; and he wasn’t just the best drummer in the Beatles. He was the best drummer for the Beatles.

It’s our wedding anniversary today. We got married at the courthouse on my day off and I went back to work the next day. However 3 months later we went on a nice 4 week road trip. I built a platform about a foot high across the back of our minivan that we slept on and had plenty of storage for our junk. I called it “Ma and Pa Kettle do the coast”.

So he

So he says he has state farm insurance. From past experience with a car accident that included a hospital visit, that was all covered by my car insurance not my health insurance. So if he has insurance, what is all the extra cash for?

It has been shown time and again that seemingly 90% of these types of “conservatives” are just there to bilk the rubes of money.

Christ. It’s like…the healthy subsidizing the ill is kind of exactly the point of insurance to begin with. You pay in on the chance that you’ll need to lean on it if you get sick. If you don’t, yes, you may not benefit, but hey, guess what? You never need it until you suddenly need it. That’s why it’s called “insurance”.

Madison monuments hit with anti-Semitic, anti-police graffiti

MADISON - A state law enforcement memorial this week was spray-painted with graffiti and a monument next to a synagogue was covered with swastikas and a statement praising President Donald Trump.

Madison Police reported a monument next to the Gates of Heaven Synagogue near downtown Madison was found covered Wednesday with two spray-painted swastikas and the phrases “Trump rules” and “antifa sucks,” a reference to anti-fascist groups that have drawn criticism for violent protests.

A few days ago I posted a long rebuttal to a flat-earth video someone posted on Steemit. Another science guy also offered his own rebuttal. Since then, I learned I went about it the wrong way, since it’s apparently more effective not to repeat the lie, but better just to give the correct answer.

Anyway, today I got this reply. It’s a mishmosh of bad science, math, and conspiracy theories.

the brainwash in deep within you @wheatsdogg

once upon a time there was a masonic lie called gravity,
they thought it made water curve and stick to a spinning ball, but it was only a fallacy.
with the dimensions given a 21000 circumf ball the math doesnt add up.
people are zooming in on object further then 100 miles away which with the globe maths it should be at 666ft below your horizon…
further objects have also repeatedly been filmed.
the coriolis effect is a stupid hoax that with critical thhinking is easily disproven,
same for gravity because it doesnt hold up when second put to the question…
density and relative buyoyancy explain objects falling or rising… there is no gravity neccesary for it…. nothing is pulling anything down…
now. instead of repeating the lies that all flat earthers once also used to believe ….open your mind and really compare the heliocentric model with the geocentric one . and wake the fuck up…..
heliocentrisme is biggest most dogmatic believe system ever…. you need alot of faiith to believe any of it….

Think about this: you are walking around, and everywhere you look, someone has erected a building with a Statue of Tinkerbell outside, and every Tuesday night vast numbers of people trot inside to hear lectures on how their belief in Tink must be spread because those darned unbelievers aren’t clapping. You must go out and clap in people’s faces and plaster their neighborhood with with tracts telling us how Captain Hook will take us away if we don’t clap for Tinkerbell, and how we have to clap all the time, and all of our kids should clap, every morning in school and at town council meetings so Tinkerbell won’t die, and Captain Hook will leave us alone.

How do you react to this?

I think I’m a swell guy for not laughing out loud every time someone wishes me a “blessed day.”

The executive order Trump inked just ahead of the lunch enhances US Treasury Department authorities to target individuals who provide goods, services or technology to North Korea, Trump said.

He said the order would also allow the US to identify new industries — including textiles, fishing and manufacturing — as potential targets for future actions.

Right there with you.

I think many Republican policies seem to be based on eliminating the people instead of trying to help them.

They don’t really want to drown government in the bathtub. That is just an allegory for wanting to physically drown certain people.

I haven’t watched his show but I had the understanding that he kept it apolitical for the most part. Izzat correct? If so, his commentaries the last couple of nights should be an even greater wake-up call to the GOP (I know, I know).

Kimmel is a very visible example of people who are just fed up with Congressional bullshit. He’s saying on the air what many (sensible) people are saying less publicly.

Don’t look for logic in the arguments of flat-earthers. They are LITERALLY flat-earthers. They deny a fact know since prehistoric times!

Well, I dunno about prehistoric times, but certainly since ancient Greek times, if not classical Egyptian times.

There also seems to be an overlap between Flat Earthers and those who believe in a geocentric solar system, which was abandoned 500 years ago.

Was there just some kind of a strange shift in politics?

Did I see Valerie Plame blow a tire and both left and right people jumped on her for it?

Did this cause a momentary backing of someone like Bill Kristol and agreement with Jack Posobiec from some on the left?

Certainly are strange times.

Wait until many Americans find themselves united over issues like healthcare and North Korea even if not all of the same political leanings.

Hey it can happen, but when it does it will most likely be after the fact and too late.

Nothing makes sense anymore.

And has Ted Nugent as a “credible” voice on guns. They have no room at all to criticize Kimmel for speaking his mind on this. Yes, he’s a comedian but he’s also a father who has experienced why we need to protect those with pre-existing conditions. I still remember Santorum calling Obama an elitist for saying that all American children should receive some form of post secondary education.
