Trump is such a fucking weird person. His praise almost always references some outside authority - ratings, “high marks” (from whom, you bloated clown?) or “many people.”
A more normal person would say “I really like Erdogan. He’s very repressive and you can really tell he would like to be more murdery.”
Is he really that ignorant of EVERYTHING that he can’t give reasons for his opinions? IS he really SO FUCKING LAZY that he can’t spend five minutes finding out a little about an issue?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg committed on Thursday to hardening his company’s defenses against countries like Russia that may have sought to spread misinformation and influence the outcome of elections in the United States and around the world.

In doing so, the social giant said it plans to turn over copies of political ads purchased by Russian sources ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election with Congress, where lawmakers are investigating potential interference by the Kremlin.

Nate Silver’s crew had a too early draft for the 2020 Democratic nomination. Nate Silver’s first pick was Bernie Sanders (who does look like he’s running despite his age). Zuckerberg was a fifth round pick; the Rock got picked in the third round.

I am not excusing Aaron Hernandez for what he did. But I do wonder how much his brain getting pummeled around by American football from childhood on could have had an effect on other parts of his life.

Aaron Hernandez Found to Have Severe C.T.E.

Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end who committed suicide in April while serving a life sentence for murder, was found to have a severe form of C.T.E., the degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma that has been found in more than 100 former N.F.L. players.

A lawyer for Hernandez, Jose Baez, in announcing the result at a news conference Thursday, said researchers determined it was “the most severe case they had ever seen in someone of Aaron’s age,” which was 27.

I think it’s really way, way, way past time to have a national discussion about destroying the lives of men who get concussions playing football, and whether contact should be ruled out in football. Yes, I know it would completely change the game, but seriously, this kind of continual waste of human beings is horrible.

I saw the name Jose Baez and I immediately had bad thoughts.

I am not going to deny CTE as an issue. I think it needs to be looked at and it probably exists beyond football into other sports and maybe even in other types of activities. Too many bad hits to the head is not good.

But back to Jose Baez, he was the lawyer for Kasey Anthony. I think it safe to say he will throw out any kind of BS no matter how outrageous to get a client off.

I know it is a defense lawyer’s job to get their client off any way possible. So look out because he will say and do anything and he will drive his bus over anyone to achieve a goal.

If Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump can be elected President, all celebrities are viable candidates. At least we aren’t talking about a Kardashian running for President, yet.

Reagan at least had the good sense to seek elected office before he ran for President. Man, I get why people get tired of conventional politicians but wanting “outsiders” just for the sake of outsiders is so fucking stupid. The Rock doesn’t understand the many complex issues that come with running a country.

Actually yes, but not because he was an actor at some point… how long has he been in the Senate and proven to be reasonable and competent? Like 8-9 years.

I’m not vehemently against him being president either, but he wouldn’t likely be my first or second choice.

It does appear that his football, wrestling, and acting credentials would leave Trump’s miserable reality TV achievements in the dust, not to mention that he can pitch Trump off the stage if the latter gets pushy in the debates like he did with Hillary.
We could benefit from GOP crossover votes as well.

Apropos of this, California tested the BernieBro hypothesis in 1994: ie, will a single payer system be more popular after an alternative (in this case, Hillary Clinton’s health care overhaul) is defeated.

Three guesses as to the outcome.

California Proposition 186 was on the November 8, 1994 general election ballot in California as an initiated constitutional amendment, where it was overwhelmingly defeated.
Proposition 186 would have established a “single payer” health care system. Under this system, the California government would have administered and financed health care coverage. This would have replaced most private health insurance programs.

And of course, Bernie campaigned for the Drug Price Standards Initiative (Proposition 61) last November. Guess how that went.

re: #166 Dave In Austin

The Calculated Logic Behind North Korea’s Missile Tests

That brings us to the strategic utility of these ballistic missile tests - North Korea intends to drive a wedge between the United States and its allies.

On the one hand, its long-range missiles, capable of reaching even the mainland United States, bring to the fore the old cold war problem of “decoupling” in East Asia. By placing Los Angeles and Chicago at risk, North Korea considerably increases the difficulty of the United States’ task in reassuring nations in East Asia of their safety.

Moreover, North Korea, in its state-run media, has repeatedly invited the United States and South Korea to modify their military exercises in exchange for a potential slowdown or cessation of ballistic missile testing.

For Japan the implication is clear, too. North Korean provocations that place its territory under direct threat are continuing precisely because the United States continues to maintain a forward presence on the Korean peninsula. The latest launch was intended to showcase that expanding UN Security Council sanctions would do little to stop Pyongyang.

With every missile test, it is worth remembering North Korea’s overarching goal when it comes to its security policy: the country has long sought an end to the United States’ “hostile policy” towards it and it believes that its nuclear weapons, by straining U.S. alliances, will allow it to achieve exactly this goal.

Yeah, it is necesary for you to emphasize that, since you obviously invest a lot of importance in pop culture. Showing the kind of contempt you did for my ignorance of the subject is a pathetically stupid example of conformist behavior.

Oh FFS, there was no contempt, I care about pop culture about as much as I care about the price of tea in China(hint: not at all)

It was just surprising is all, The Rock is almost ubiquitous these days, TV, movies, commercials, magazines. It was sort of like asking “Who is Tom Cruise?”

I really don’t think it makes sense to analyze North Korea’s actions as if they are independent of what China wants.

Eh…the problem is that “what China wants” isn’t necessarily a fixed, clear intent that they can transmit perfectly to North Korea. Any more than “what the US wants” was clearly executed by Pinochet’s Chile.

China has internal politics and its own hawks and doves, and its own security priorities. Given it’s current path of being more muscular in Southeast Asia and it’s own spate of base-building, there’s an overlap between DPRK’s priorities and the priorities of at least some of the Chinese leadership cadre.

The other thing is: China’s long-term planning may be willing to accommodate chaos, or even appropriate chaos, so it’s not in their interest to control North Korea.
I mean, consider that in China’s long-term planning, individual Chinese lives don’t really matter very much, and the lives of cultural minorities within China matter even less.

Follow my total bastard logic here:

A North-Korea-USA clash is a win-win for China. It wipes away their ugly stepchild, it it will diminish US standing in East and Southeast Asia and/or (depending on how those missiles aim) damage the bases that provide the US command of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. North Korea can’t “win” but the collapsed state is a poison crown for whoever tries to saddle the region. Administration—likely in the face of massive insurgent resistance and equally massive refugee movement—is a money and time sink.

Starving to death or blown up, individual North Koreans don’t matter in the larger picture of things in China. But if they move or fight, they’re going to destabilize South Korea…and maybe Japan too. Yes, this action would likely disrupt Northeast China, but they’ve got enough military and not enough compassion to deal with that issue sharply. (For that matter, given the current attempts to acquire foreign women for the glut of Chinese men, a collapsed North Korea would be a wellspring of human material). Dead North Koreans in exchange for a weakened US presence is E/SE Asia is like buying a house with Disney Dollars. And dead South Koreans are a long-term tactical plus—thin the competition—and dead Japanese would be lagniappe—competition, plus hated cultural foe.

President Donald Trump’s appointees to jobs at Agriculture Department headquarters include a long-haul truck driver, a country club cabana attendant and the owner of a scented-candle company.

A POLITICO review of dozens of résumés from political appointees to USDA shows the agency has been stocked with Trump campaign staff and volunteers who in many cases demonstrated little to no experience with federal policy, let alone deep roots in agriculture. But of the 42 résumés POLITICO reviewed, 22 cited Trump campaign experience. And based on their résumés, some of those appointees appear to lack credentials, such as a college degree, required to qualify for higher government salaries.

“The mentally deranged behavior of the U.S. president openly expressing on the UN arena the unethical will to ‘totally destroy’ a sovereign state, beyond the boundary of threats of regime change or overturn of social system, makes even those with normal thinking faculty think about discretion and composure.”

“After taking office Trump has rendered the world restless through threats and blackmail against all countries in the world. He is unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country, and he is surely a rogue and a gangster fond of playing with fire, rather than a politician. His remarks which described the U.S. option through straightforward expression of his will have convinced me, rather than frightening or stopping me, that the path I chose is correct and that it is the one I have to follow to the last.”

Well, he is not really wrong is he?

Oh FFS, there was no contempt, I care about pop culture about as much as I care about the price of tea in China(hint: not at all)

It was just surprising is all, The Rock is almost ubiquitous these days, TV, movies, commercials, magazines. It was sort of like asking “Who is Tom Cruise?”

I apologize if the word play on his name came across as unnecessarily harsh.

Thank you for that. I have been seriously bent out of shape recently, for reasons I don’t altogether understand, and it tends to make me over-sensitive. I have felt like the walls were closing in on me, even though I have about as much space as I could reasonably use. That may be the problem. It may not be good that I live alone in a 4000 sq. ft. house. I really am feeling kind of isolated and I think a permanent change of scenery might be in order.

Detroit Local Powers First EV Charging Road in North America The road, about a mile from Local 58's hall, uses rubber-coated copper inductive-charging coils buried under the asphalt that transfer power to a receiver pad attached to a car's underbelly, much like how a phone can be charged wirelessly. ...
