An Amazing Solo Performance by Guitarist/Singer Jon Gomm: “Everything”

Song, Album and Guitar Tab from: jongomm.com

iTunes: bit.ly
Amazon UK: bit.ly
Amazon US: amzn.to

The guitar tab has full super-detailed performance notes to help you learn the song.

‘Everything’ is the 3rd single from my latest album, ‘Secrets Nobody Keeps’.

It’s a twisted love song. It’s about obsession. It’s the song I had the most comments about from the album, which really surprised me, just because it’s so prog - nearly ten minutes long, two time signatures, shreddy guitar solo, even cameo appearances from other songs…

It’s played on my guitar Wilma, through a Trace Acoustic TA200 amp, designed in Britain by amp-genius Paul Stevens. Massive thanks to Tom Allen of Trace Acoustic for producing this video.

Audio mixed and produced by Whiskas, engineered and co-produced by Jon Gomm. Mastered by Tom “The Frequency” Woodhead at Hippocratic Mastering.

LYRICS:

I’ll tell you all of my fears
I’ll tell you all of my shame
If you’ll just lend me an ear
That’s all I want

There is no word I can say
There is no chord I can play
To make me more of a man
And that’s all I want

That’s Everything…

Take my hand I’ll lead you and we’ll never be alone
Take my hand I’ll lead you and we’ll never be alone

The city’s making you ill
It’s like you’re running uphill
Let’s jump off the treadmill
Just close your eyes

I’m gonna build you a house
I’m gonna build you a wall
To keep you safe from it all
Just close your eyes

That’s Everything…

Take my hand I’ll lead you and we’ll never be alone
Take my hand I’ll lead you and we’ll never be alone

Back at the dawning of time
When god made Everything
He had but one thing in mind
To make you mine

You’re everything to me….

For me, at least, Vietnam was partly love. With each step, each light-year of a second, a foot soldier is always almost dead, or so it feels, and in such circumstances you can’t help but love. You love your mom and dad, the Vikings, hamburgers on the grill, your pulse, your future — everything that might be lost or never come to be. Intimacy with death carries with it a corresponding new intimacy with life. Jokes are funnier, green is greener. You love the musty morning air. You love the miracle of your own enduring capacity for love. You love your friends in Alpha Company — a kid named Chip, my buddy. He wrote letters to my sister, I wrote letters to his sister. In the rear, back at Gator, Chip and I would go our separate ways, by color, both of us ashamed but knowing it had to be that way. In the bush, though, nothing kept us apart. “Black and White,” we were called. In May of 1969, Chip was blown high into a hedge of bamboo. Many pieces. I loved the guy, he loved me. I’m alive. He’s dead. An old story, I guess.

Richard, forced “patriotism” amongst your workforce, under pain of termination of employment, isn’t “freedom”, it’s jack-booted totalitarianism.

I know, *your team, your rules*, but I hope a good chunk of that team decides to walk out on you, “King”.

So my highest respects to a church usher who physically stopped a hate crime gunman. The good guy got it done. Without killing.

bbc.com

A masked gunman who entered a church near Nashville, Tennessee, was stopped mid-attack after killing one person and wounding several others.
The suspect shot himself during a struggle with an usher from the church in Antioch, but survived his wound.
The usher, who was struck in the face by the gun, fetched his own gun from his car and guarded the gunman until police arrived.
Police said the usher acted in an “extraordinarily brave” way.

On the original topic, though, Maxwell’s teammate, outfielder Mark Canha, said he intentionally decided on the hand-on-shoulder approach to support his teammate without taking a stance either for or against the kneeling protests. He asked Maxwell if that was okay, and he agreed. And as we saw yesterday from the Twitter timeline, obviously they told the team’s media representatives about it before the fact.

Lots of chatter about the Milo fiasco. Apparently he wanted Berkeley to call off his “free speech week” so he could whine about them trying to shut him up and when they didn’t cancel, and their bluff was called, things fell apart.

Texas governor posts fake news on Jerry Jones and the national anthem

The governor of Texas is praising Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for ordering all Cowboys players to stand for the national anthem, something Jones hasn’t done.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted, “Thank you Jerry Jones” with a link to an article on a website called uconservative.net. That article is headlined, Cowboys Jerry Jones to Players: “Stand For the Anthem or You’re Off the Team”.

But as Politifact notes, Jones didn’t say that. Jones said he supports the flag and the Cowboys as an organization support the flag, but he didn’t say that kneeling for the national anthem would get cut.

Nancy LeTourneau has a good article in Washington Monthly, pointing out that Bernie Sanders’ speech on foreign policy was good, it copied heavily from what President Obama laid out during his terms. Amazing, that.

Where Sanders veered from Obama’s foreign policy principles was that, while the former president preferred the more nuanced approach of rejecting the “global war on terror” in favor of fighting organizations like ISIS and al Qaeda, Sanders was typically somewhat bombastic.

In the end, much of Sanders foreign policy vision is very similar to what was espoused by Obama. In that sense, it was the opposite of what we are witnessing today from Trump, but very much like what we saw during the previous administration.

This way the issues won’t just slide away into the background because there will always be people keeping them front and center.

This kind of approach is more important than ever with Trump, because he’s putting out a blizzard of bad craziness, and it’s way too easy to get swept up in the latest outrage and forget the other important shit.

That was one of the things Sarah Kendzior mentioned before the inauguration. Focus on something you can take care of. There are plenty of us to go around. Norman caught more than “a lot of shit”, he was essentially blackballed and ostracized from Australian sports, ending his Olympic career; even as recently as the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he was completely ignored by his fellow countrymen who were putting it all on.

After the salute, Norman’s career suffered greatly. A 2012 CNN profile noted that “he returned home to Australia a pariah, suffering unofficial sanction and ridicule as the Black Power salute’s forgotten man. He never ran in the Olympics again.”[13] He was not selected for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 despite turning in adequate times, and was not welcomed even three decades later at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.[14][15][16] Carlos later noted that “If we [Carlos and Smith] were getting beat up, Peter was facing an entire country and suffering alone.”[15][16]

But I also know that a lot of them come from tough backgrounds and you know what, they’re allowed to express themselves too. If you don’t like that, that’s fine, you don’t have to watch but don’t fucking act like they have to shut up to entertain you and honestly you should be bothered a lot more by people waving CSA flags and swastikas than kneeling for the national anthem to bring attention to a big problem in our society. You tell people ot protest peacefully and they’re doing it but because it offends your conservative sensibilities, you bitch at em.

Well, given Australia’s long-running discrimination and institutional racism against its Aboriginal population and its abatement that parallels the same rough time frame as the civil rights movement here in America, it makes a odd bit of sense that Norman, for standing with and sympathizing with those damn uppity n***ers (or whatever the Australian pejorative would be), would suffer for it.

The real shame about it is that Norman continued to suffer for it pretty much till the day he died, long after official government policies and mainstream Australian society had changed to be more inclusive, because the Australian sports community apparently felt that he should.

They live in a bubble. They literally do. They willfully exclude any information that does not agree with their preconceived notions, and allow in only those things which confirm them. This bubble is built via very subtle propaganda techniques which the right wing has perfected since the end of World War II. It’s sickening, but it’s remarkable in its scope and effectiveness.

I considered myself a Republican until a couple years into college. Just because the black hole of derp is good at drawing stuff into it and almost impossible to escape doesn’t make it particularly subtle. It’s really close to devotion to a particular sports team. The bias and silliness is pretty clear to anyone not cheering for the team, but on the inside you’ve got fans willing to stand up for a coach after it’s revealed he stood by knowing someone was diddling underage boys.

I’m glad Discovery has the MRAs and bigots all apoplectic, because it proves that they aren’t really Trek fans at all; tolerance and inclusiveness has been a cornerstone of the ST franchise all the way back to TOS (even if Shatner seems to be contracting Trumpitis as of late, we can’t forget what he and Nichols did with their on-screen kiss and how they staged it).

The stupid wingnuts think everytime a minority has a position of an authority on a television show, it must be because of some social agenda by the writers. They never thought “Hey this person is a talented actor/actress and can portray this really well.” I enjoyed Law and Order a lot. Anita Van Buren, an African-American lieutenant was a perfect example of that. She was Briscoe, Logan, and so many other mostly men’s superior and she did a great job of that.

Well, think about it this way: one of the characters was obviously Japanese, and we’d only finished up a war with Japan in 1945. Another character was obviously Russian, and we had the Cold War going on. Lt. Uhura was African-American and a woman! Yeah, of course the captain was supposed to be a white male, but Roddenberry knew what he was doing. And as a kid watching ST:TOS, I couldn’t help but absorb that the future world could be a better place. We’re still trying to get there.

re: #236 Weaselone

I considered myself a Republican until a couple years into college. Just because the black hole of derp is good at drawing stuff into it and almost impossible to escape doesn’t make it particularly subtle. It’s really close to devotion to a particular sports team. The bias and silliness is pretty clear to anyone not cheering for the team, but on the inside you’ve got fans willing to stand up for a coach after it’s revealed he stood by knowing someone was diddling underage boys.

The only escape from that black hole is being forced to interact with people who think very differently from you on a daily basis and being decent enough that a few of those people become your friends despite your fucked up views. That was my college experience any way. I was open about my conservatism and justifiably got my head ripped off a few times when I spouted offensive bullshit, but others were kind to me. And I eventually came around because those experiences made me really think my views through. Escape can be extremely challenging and unlikely in most cases, but it can be done with plenty of humility and introspection.

Kneeling for the flag isn’t even particularly disrespectful. It’ not like they’re flipping the bird or turning around and dropping trow. Meanwhile people in the stadium and watching at home are using the time to take a pregame dump.

TBH I almost always use that time to take a quick piss at home. I don’t know anyone who stands at home. I’m honestly tired of this wave of nationalism we’ve seen 9/11. Lest we forget but other nationalities lost lives that day too.

Had forgotten the Russian. But yeah we still have a way to go.

Yeah. I still can’t get over that. Just cannot get over that we locked people up because they happened to have parents and grandparents who were Japanese. But of course, we really didn’t do the same to Americans of German and Italian descent!

I think it was done occasionally, as with the leaders of the German American Bund, but it’s much harder to spot someone of German descent than Asian, and at the time the “German” was much more likely to be of mixed national origin than the Japanese.

Good read from the New Yorker here. This is certainly right on. And this kind of speaks to a weakness by a Senator from Vermont has on the issues. Sorry the premise is basically that the word “ungrateful” is the new “uppity” to describe black people who dare to speak their minds.

Last night I got to meet the only “declared” Dem candidate for 2020, John Delaney. (He has about as much chance of becoming president as I do.) The first thing he said to me was (paraphrasing) Democrats need to stick to what matters to people, and that’s their jobs and their paycheck. That’s what Dems should run on, and they should really focus on that.

I responded that Democrats can walk and chew gum at the same time, and that, while that’s important, there are other things that are as or more important.

He stood there in silence. I don’t think I made a very good first impression—oh well.

His speech continued on that same front—not one word about voter suppression or civil rights or women or healthcare—just “Dems gotta get out and vote and we need to remember those peeps who’ve been forgotten or whose jobs have gone away.”

So sick of the singular focus bullshit—the guy endorsed Hillary, but he sounded just like a Bernie Bro last night.

My Dad asked my SiL’s husband if he could tell where they were from based on their Spanish. Dad knows Spanish but doesn’t know dialects. Anyhow we ended up becoming friends with the group and enjoyed the game together. My SiL’s husband later explained to us that Carribean Spanish is very fast paced making it difficult for even a fellow native Spanish speaker to pick up on. He also says his hybrid Spanish- Salvadoran combined with the Peruvian my sil speaks has people always wondering about his origin.

One of my favorite scenes from the movie is where Sulu is awakened by his comms officer (cameoed by Christian Slater), because Starfleet is asking if Excelsior knows the whereabouts of Enterprise. When Sulu tells his comms officer to tell Starfleet that they don’t know (even though he does and/or suspects that Spock and the Enterprise is planning a rescue mission for Kirk and McCoy) and the comms officer questions that response, Sulu growls at him, “You have hearing problems, mister?”, to which the comms officer said, “No, sir!” and left.

Undiscovered Country laid the end-of-the-Cold-War allegory on thick and deep, but the cast’s performances (even Shatner’s) was pretty damn good. For me, Sulu as captain of the Excelsior, as well as Plummer, Cattrall, Iman, David Warner, and Kurtwood Smith’s performances (as well as Michael Dorn’s cameo as a lawyer ancestor of his TNG/DS9 character Worf, tasked with Kirk and McCoy’s defense in Klingon court) made the movie much better than its immediate predecessor in the series.

Takei, Plummer, and David Warner made the movie for me. There was a lot of great stuff in it, and up ‘til pretty recently, I thought of it as fairly flawless. The Tor sci-fi publisher’s website had a rewatch/review of the movie (it’s a very long article, btw) that pointed out some of the more dunderheaded decisions made by the writers, though I think they note that the acting is pretty damn great across the board.

“After America’s entrance into World War I, Major League Baseball games often featured patriotic rituals, such as players marching in formation during pregame military drills and bands playing patriotic songs. During the seventh-inning stretch of game one of the 1918 World Series, the band erupted into ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’ The Cubs and Red Sox players faced the centerfield flag pole and stood at attention. The crowd, already on their feet, began to sing along and applauded at the end of the song. Given the positive reaction, the band played the song during the next two games, and when the Series moved to Boston, the Red Sox owner brought in a band and had the song played before the start of each remaining contest. After the war (and after the song was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution in 1931), the song continued to be played, but only on special occasions like opening day, national holidays and World Series games. During World War II, baseball games again became venues for large-scale displays of patriotism, and technological advances in public address systems allowed songs to be played without a band. ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ was played before games throughout the course of the war, and by the time the war was over, the pregame singing of the national anthem had become cemented as a baseball ritual, after which it spread to other sports.”

re: #327 scottslemmons

Takei, Plummer, and David Warner made the movie for me. There was a lot of great stuff in it, and up ‘til pretty recently, I thought of it as fairly flawless. The Tor sci-fi publisher’s website had a rewatch/review of the movie (it’s a very long article, btw) that pointed out some of the more dunderheaded decisions made by the writers, though I think they note that the acting is pretty damn great across the board.

One wee little fuckup about that “re-review”:

Hailing frequencies open. Uhura inexplicably has absolutely no knowledge of the Klingon language whatsoever, nor is the Enterprise computer programmed with any information about it, since she and a half-dozen others are poring over a ton of codex books about the language.

That was not the case, becuse, as Chekov said right in the beginning of that scene, the reason that Uhura didn’t respond normally (read: speak English) to the Klingon outpost was because the Enterprise’s universal translator’s response would be recognized as such and they’d be busted. Also, Uhura might have had some knowledge of the Klingon language at some point, but, as anyone who has taken any foreign languages in school, then never used them much, if any, after that, tends to forget them; with a UT normally at her disposal, Uhura wouldn’t have much day-to-day need to speak Klingon.

There’s nothing to say that Uhura and the Enterprise bridge crew wouldn’t be able to read a transcript of the Klingons talking to them (in fact, it’s Scotty that’s reading back the Klingon translation, with some delay, though it looks like he’s referencing a book, so the UT may have had to been completely disabled for the ruse to work), but they had to respond without the UT; having them pore through mountains of dusty tomes to formulate their responses just sets the scene up for a bit of comic relief.

You’re wrong, Senator.

Your pitiful attempt to conflate what athletes are doing (exercising their Constitutional rights to protest injustice and lately protest a government official trying to suppress free speech) will not succeed.

And quit using we veterans and those who died in my family to score a cheap political point. I didn’t vote against you so you could sit in Washington whigning about people exercising their rights. I did not become disabled in the service of the nation for a flag.

You’re a history major. Apparently you should have gone in the military instead; you might have learned what that flag actually is supposed to represent (all the people, not military and vets).

You treat it like a religious idol—something your Bible commands you should never do.

Real patriotism is the desire to better the nation and its people, particularly when an injustice can be identified and highlighted; especially when one is willing to stand up and highlight that injustice in the face of hatred.

Real patriotism is the willingness to stand up and be heard (or in this case take a knee), even when standing up (or taking a knee) will inconvenience you, hurt your standing, job, or perhaps your life.

Anyone can be a patriot sitting in an armchair and whigning about the state of the nation. Real patriots get up and do something about it.

Do your job, Senator. Reign in your party’s leader. /rant

So CBS put on broadcast the double episode premiere of Star Trek: Discovery… and the world did not end.

All the butthurt over “SJW” was always nonsense, but now after the first two hours it seems even more silly.

The show as presented is just more of the same basic ST story type - the inherent dichotomy between exploring and warfare, yet the two activities are united in story.

If anything, the first two episodes are too hardcore. Previous series openers look like milquetoast in comparison (save perhaps TOS original pilot.) Very dramatic, much more so than the typical ST episodes, perhaps more like when the Xindi came to Earth in ST:Enterprise.

Oh well, the whining will continue no doubt.

Actually, going back and looking at that scene just now, the UT is translating the Klingons (you can see the translation between “Federation Standard” [presumably, English] and Klingon on the screen in front of Uhura), but Scotty and Uhura were still having to reference their books for the response.

As for how I rank the ST:TOS movies, it’s:

6) The Final Frontier: While it has its (relatively few) moments (“What does God need with a starship?” and the scenes at Yosemite), it’s definitely earned its reputation as the worst ST movie, even worse than the TNG crew’s swan song Nemesis. People love to lay the blame at Shatner’s direction, but the awful writing, really shitty SFX, and relatively low budget for a ST feature film (with TNG only 2-3 years in production at that point and Paramount wanting to continue the ST franchise there, concentrating studio resources there to the detriment of FF) had lots to do with it.

5) The Motion Picture: For a freshman effort to translate TOS (and ST, in general) to the big screen, Paramount could have done much worse than having veteran director Robert Wise handle this one, but other factors out of Wise’s control made the original theatrical cut plodding and half-baked in a lot of places. The script was originally meant for an episode for a TV series revival of the franchise (ST: Phase II) on a prospective Paramount TV network (which didn’t end up successfully launching until the mid-90s as UPN, with ST:Voyager as its flagship show) and, when that fell through, had to be reworked as a movie script.
The original firm hired to create the SFX (Abel & Associates) was so out of their depth (and sucked up a lot of the movie’s budget and post-production time, with little to show for it), Douglas Trumbull and John Dykstra were called in to salvage things in a very short period of time; all of the post-production issues meant that Wise didn’t have nearly enough time to get the film edited the way he wanted. It was such a time crunch, Wise never got to screen it before test audiences to gauge and adjust his edits and pacing and what came to be the final theatrical edit was literally completed right before it was to be screened at its world premiere in DC.
Still, people wanted to compare it to Star Wars (and, all these years on, the ST movies that followed it, as well), but it really needs to be seen as a continuation of TOS, melded with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and I think Wise and crew did very well considering all of the problems they had; in 2000, Wise and his production company did a director’s cut, tightening up the pacing and sound and cleaning up (and adding some) special effects and adding back some originally-deleted scenes and, as such, I believe the director’s cut is the definitive version, one that addressed a lot of the deficiencies with the theatrical edit.

4) The Undiscovered Country: There’s not really much more I can say that’s not in my #304, #314, and #353 upthread, other than, as the Original Series cast’s swan song that fused end-of-the-Cold-War allegory with a whodunit murder mystery, it’s a solid second place in my list and one of my favorite movies overall.

1) The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home: This epic trilogy is something that I don’t think that I’ve seen done with any other movie franchise that’s attempted it as well, save for Back to the Future and perhaps Peter Jackson’s LotR/Hobbit franchise, where the events of the sequels (SfS and TVH) pick up immediately (or very shortly thereafter) from where the previous movie left off and events in those prior movies is continuously referenced in the follow-up films of that trilogy.
For the most part, the first two movies flow into each other almost effortlessly (with absolutely great scenery-chewing villains played by Ricardo Montalban and Christopher Lloyd in WoK and SfS, respectively), but TVH (with Nimoy directing) takes a lighter, if somewhat preachy, tone towards the audience, using the continuing story from the other two installments to launch an cautionary ecological tale involving humpback whales, an alien probe trying to contact said whales (now extinct by the 23rd century) and wreaking immense damage upon Earth, and the Enterprise crew’s time-travelling efforts in their captured Klingon bird-of-prey from SfS to answer that probe and reverse its damage, all the while Spock is still recovering from his resurrection and his “katra” being put back in his head (from McCoy’s) from the previous film.
Together, back-to-back-to-back, they’re one of the best reasons to be a Star Trek fan.

So yeah, that’s exactly what it was.

Didn’t know that.

$20,000 to $50,000
Lawyers are pricey, especially D.C. lawyers. As special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian electoral interference expands, more and more people who were associated with the Trump campaign are feeling the financial pinch. Just lawyering up to help prepare for congressional testimony could set someone back $20,000 to $50,000 in fees, and a grand jury subpoena for a witness could lead to legal fees in excess of $100,000. Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump spent the weekend bitching about football and the fact that some players were protesting police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem.

He attacked Kopernick and Curry. 100+ players knelt during the NFL national anthems. Some teams locked arms in solidarity. Even a few owners and NFL Commish Godell came out in support of the players’ right to kneel.

When you’ve ceded the high ground to the NFL, you know you’re truly fucked. That’s why Trump’s finding refuge in NASCAR - a sport founded on the principle of smuggling moonshine to avoid taxation.

Never mind that the anthem is separate from the sport itself.

Never mind that the same guy who rose to fame for being a loudmouth con artist is complaining when others exercise their rights.

Trump is again deflecting from his criminal cabal of cronies in the WH by attacking athletes who are standing up for those whose voices aren’t being heard. He’s attacking them as being unpatriotic, when patriotism means standing up for civil rights and justice under the law.

He attacks people who wont salute the flag as though that is unpatriotic, when Trump himself dodged the draft and military service. He has ignored his oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. His party has refused to protect and defend the nation from threats foreign and domestic by trying to derail the investigations into Trump’s Russia connections.

And yet every day there’s a new revelation of how closely tied Trump is to Russia and how his people, including Kushner, were doing all the things he claimed Clinton should go to prison for (email misuse, failure to follow the law, etc.). Kushner in particular should have his clearance revoked for lying on his SF86, and yet he’s still there. We know now that he was using private email to conduct official government business. That too is a firing offense.

Trump wont do that, just as he wont force Price or Mnuchin to resign over their misuse of charter flights and taxpayer funds.

It’s always okay to do it when you’re a GOPer.

The NBA based its suspension of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf on a rule that requires players to stand during the playing of the national anthem. The NFL has no such rule, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement is silent on the subject.

And so Kaepernick and any other player has the right to not stand during the national anthem. Whether other players will follow Kaepernick’s lead remains to be seen.

The whole gestalt of the US in the first couple of decades of the 19th century was expansion at all costs: about relentlessly taking land and settling the land, no matter what.

The British didn’t exactly go into the war of 1812 with all their interest and might. It was opportunistic for them, but not one they had to win.

But for the Americans who had all those land promises from having served in the Revolution, the expansion west was a way of getting paid for their service.

We really have to look at the three wars together - what we call the French and Indian war, the Revolutionary war, and the War of 1812. They were all about the relentless drive of taking land, declaring ownership of the continent, and forcing out the natives.

And yet we still have the Mitt Romney types who want to pretend that the US doesn’t really want war. Most of our history is about being at war here or there.

Be interesting to see against whom that violence has escalated against.

“The question really is, what is different now from 15 years ago in terms of why crime has increased?” said John K. Roman, a criminologist at the University of Chicago. “And the only thing that has changed is the distrust between heavily policed communities and local police. It’s not a coincidence that cities that have crime increases have also had problems between communities and the police.”

Among the cities that have experienced recent upticks in murder coupled with questionable police shootings that prompted rioting or other civil disturbances are Chicago, Baltimore, Charlotte, St. Louis and Milwaukee. But other cities where there have been significant increases in homicides in recent years, including Las Vegas and Memphis, have been largely free of public anger in response to fatal police shootings.

In 2016, Chicago again led the nation in murders with 765 — more than double the 335 people killed in New York, which has more than 5.8 million more people than Chicago.

In Chicago and elsewhere, murder victims, as well as those arrested on murder charges, were disproportionately young, African-American and male, according to the F.B.I. records and data from local law enforcement agencies. The overwhelming weapon of choice was a firearm, responsible for four of five killings in 2016.

And although large cities — those with populations of more than a million people — saw homicides rise by 20.3 percent, and all violent crime increase by 7.2 percent in 2016, the trend toward greater violence was felt in cities and towns of all sizes. In towns with populations of fewer than 10,000 people, for instance, murders rose by 8.4 percent, according to the F.B.I. data.

Kim Davis, a state employee denying people their civil rights was a hero to these people but somehow an athlete whose job has nothing to do with the national anthem is somehow a pariah for not conforming ot their idea of patriotism.

The NFL is an association of private clubs: it can pass a rule requiring all players to stand for the national anthem…and fire them if they choose not to obey.

They tried to sound as neutral as they could, but they praised the players enough that you knew they’re not going to be fired.

Sleep is often associated with having a brain because the behavior seems to be required for memory and learning, and because shared genes and mechanisms for sleep have been identified in all sorts of animals with brains, from worms and flies to mice and humans. But what we’ve found, at least in this jellyfish, is “you don’t need a brain to sleep,” Mr. Abrams said.

I’ll sleep better with that knowledge.

I think that’s the real reason why Trump is so mad. They’re supporting their players. The whole not on company time brigade is ignoring that the people who pay these guys’ salaries are fine with their protests. Tough shit, if you don’t like it. Fucking wingnut snowflake hypocrites.

I think a lot of white folks (the ones who ‘don’t have a racist bone it their body’) don’t realize the extent to which calling the NFL players taking a knee ‘Ungrateful’, and/or saying they’re paid to play a gaime, not to protest, comes across as “Dance, N*****, Dance!”

That’s exactly what it is and they don’t get that. Trump’s attitude about the safety stuff reminds me of how the Roman emperors got their jollies watching Gladiators die in the coliseum too.

I honestly don’t know what our troops are fighting for if you can’t kneel quietly during the national anthem. Hell as distasteful as it would be, they would be even within their right to yell BLM during it should they please. They say All lives matter but their rhetoric and actions prove otherwise.

And I honestly don’t know why “the troops” have anything to do with the whole thing in the first place. The protest had fuck all to do with “the troops,” but suddenly it’s all about “the troops.”

It’s simple BD. Saying someone is against the Troops may as well be saying someone doesn’t like Jesus. It’s pathetic distracting from what the real issue is and that’s police mistreatment that many African-Americans regardless of class experience in their lifetimes that white Americans like me will never experience.
