New side project: working with Ukrainian friends to see how many Russian bot-nets work to disrupt democracy across international lines.

You know, the kind of thing that our intelligence services would do, were they not controlled by a pro-Putin traitor to the United States.

Worth noting, re the latest Chelsea Manning butthurt.

Dupes and Putin bots are whining, “but Manning was not accused of treason!”

Canadian immigration officials did not bar Manning for committing treason in the U.S. but for committing an offense that would be treason if committed against Canada.
U.S. and Canadian definitions of treason differ, with the latter being more inclusive. In particular, offenses that would usually be prosecuted as espionage in the U.S. can be tried as treason in Canada.

Treason, the Canadian Encyclopedia

A person commits “treason” who a) uses force or violence for the purpose of overthrowing the government of Canada or a province, b) discloses, without lawful authority, military or scientific material to agents of a foreign state, if he or she knows or should know that the material may be used to impair Canada’s safety or defence, or c) engages in certain listed conspiracies or attempted offences. The punishment for treason is life imprisonment; normal parole rules apply.

Trump loves him some tariffs.

On a more serious note, recent events really establish that the status quo of Puerto Rico as a US commonwealth territory can’t continue. The Jones Act wouldn’t be screwing with their economy if they were independent (it’d probably be repealed if they had voting members of Congress). And there would be no delay for aid if Puerto Rico had Representatives and Senators in Congress.

“Elites” yeah because Tucker isn’t an elitist.

Whenever I hear about Tucker goddam Carlson talking about ‘elites’, I just remember his biography….

Carlson was born in San Francisco, California, the elder son of Richard Warner Carlson, a former Los Angeles news anchor and U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles, who was also president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and director of Voice of America. His mother is the former Lisa McNear Lombardi,[4] and his stepmother is the former Patricia Caroline Swanson, an heiress to the Swanson frozen-food fortune (daughter of Gilbert Carl Swanson and granddaughter of Carl A. Swanson) and a niece of Senator J. William Fulbright.[5] He has a brother, Buckley Swanson Peck Carlson. According to a profile in People magazine, “Tucker and younger brother Buckley were raised in La Jolla, Calif., by their father and stepmother, Patricia, after their mother left home when Tucker was 6.”[6] While living in La Jolla, California, Tucker briefly attended La Jolla Country Day School before relocating to the East Coast.

He attended St. George’s School, a boarding school in Middletown, Rhode Island. After graduation, he studied at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated in 1992 with a B.A. in history.

He is married to Susan Carlson, née Andrews, a St. George’s classmate whose father was the school’s headmaster during their time there.[7] They met each other while attending St. George’s School at Rhode Island and got married in 1991.[8]

Yes you did, that must be why my Internet service was out for a whole day.

Do you work for CenturyLink? /s

Rumour control floating around the village today: CenturyLink is going to hook up the village to the fibre optic line that runs down the easternmost street in town but doesn’t provide us service. If that rumour is true, we might actually get high-speed Internet here.

(Let’s see if they also jump the price of Internet service from the ridiculous sum we already pay for it here … and if this includes improving our landline telephone service.)

THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING YOU WILL SEE ALL DAY
More straw men than Burning Man!

@FoxNews
.@TuckerCarlson: American elites are more comfortable attacking their own country than others, for the simple reason that they love it less.

“… After Carlson expressed ignorance about what issues the protestors were actually protesting, Bolden expressed reasonable incredulity, saying “clearly you were not listening to it if you don’t think that’s what they’re protesting.”

Carlson replied with “here’s the truth, we fly the flag, we sing the anthem, we do all the silly civic rituals because we don’t have a lot in common otherwise as Americans.” He then follows by saying “when you start attacking national symbols it raises the obvious question, which is why are we all united as one? What do we have in common? I’m serious.”

So Carlson believes that flying the flag and singing the anthem are “silly civic rituals” but also believes that kneeling in protest is “attacking national symbols.” An objective observer might think that Carlson is just exhibiting his trademark shallow and craven behavior that comes with the territory of hosting a clearly biased opinion program ostensibly disguised as a news program, or in other words, is just spewing “silly” (and empty) rhetoric. …”

I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s possible to get people to at try and see the other side, if they say, “Okay, but this isn’t the right venue to protest!”.

The ones you will never reach are the ones who discount the entire possibility of police brutality against blacks.

Seth Meyers has a black writer who sometimes comes on-camera for commentary; on this very question last night she asked “so if you don’t want us to protest loudly, and you don’t want us to protest quietly, what exactly is the right way for us to protest? Should we write down our complaints, put it in a bottle and throw it in the ocean?!?”

That’s obviously what the right wants. This important point reminds me of the Silence = Death slogan from AIDS activism back in the day. Power never concedes anything without a fight. Hopefully that fight can be non-violent, but any effective protest movement is necessarily going to be bothersome for lots of people.

The Times has called the AL primary for Roy Moore. Moore is only trailing in three counties that have reported any votes- Jefferson (Birmingham), Madison (Huntsville), and Hale- and Hale’s reported only one precinct and six votes.

Woah, the job search site Indeed just aired a powerful ad on CBS asking prospective employers to consider their implicit biases when looking at resumes. It had a voice over asking (paraphrasing here), “What do my name, my address, my potential religious views tell you about me? Don’t think of who I might be, think about what I can do.”, as it shows a diverse group of people. That’ll piss off the Nazis.

1958. Something to keep in mind, this stuff was happening within the lifetime of most baby boomers. This isn’t some ancient history, it’s literally in living memory.

And more recently. The city of Norfolk, VA was still fighting integrating its schools in the Eighties.

Massive Resistance, started by Robert Byrd in 1956, was Virginia’s plan to subvert the Brown decision, by changing compulsory school attendance law to allow the commonwealth to shut school districts rather than integrate.

Numerous school boards across Virginia were disestablished, and many public schools closed. In 1968, the Supreme Court declared Massive Resistance unconstitutional.

In 2009, the Richmond Times-Dispatch apologised for its role in opposing human rights. In 2013, the Episcopal Church did the same.

We are in a war. There’s a battle being fought in multiple places. We can either let the fascist, theocratic, racists win, or the pluralistic, progressive side can win. We aren’t going to win every battle, but if we keep it up we will prevail. We will be a different country in some ways, but hopefully it will be because we learned a lesson, not because we turned into a hellhole.

Soooo. I didn’t know Nixon committed treason with the South Vietnamese right before the election. Was busted by Johnson & Johnson decided not to let anyone know because of how they found out (wire tapping)

The shit has never stopped.

There is one nice story in that episode-the two N. Vietnamese who fell in love and then went off to drive trucks on separate sections of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and were reunited after the war and married.

Vietnam War VIII tonight. Basically 1969-70. Emotionally very tough to watch/remember. Nixon lying, people dying even when we were supposedly “Vietnamizing” the shit. The asshole “Weathermen.” My Lai. Kent State. Jackson State.

One especially nasty knell struck me as something you might run into in many parts of the country today: After the Kent State murders, 58 percent of the nation thought that the shootings were justified. I can picture Fox and Friends applauding.

That’s actually kind of reassuring in a weird way. The more I look at polling from the 60s and 70s, the more apparent it becomes to me that this country has always had a silent majority of shitty people that gleefully embrace their worst instincts. And yet despite that, we’ve been able to achieve positive change throughout our nation’s history, even if it has been in fits and starts.

IIRC the rationale was that the protesters were throwing rocks and whatnot at the Guard members. Which seems like a foolish thing to do, and obviously, even an inexperienced and frightened Nat’l Guardsman shouldn’t have shot anyone. But it wasn’t just a random shooting of nonviolent protesters.

It’s a difficult question. On the one hand, the National Guard are trained armsmen and hand-to-hand combatants. On the other, thrown projectiles and a violent mob can be dangerous even for trained soldiers. I admit that it’s a hard situation to resolve without shooting, and the outrage is mostly due to hindsight.

It was definitely difficult. I think a lot of the outrage was due to shock. “Our children” were being shot in the US. Still, there should be a better way to control rioters. I don’t think we were really prepared for the situation.

The NG of the time was in no way as professional, well-trained, or well-led as today. NG and Reserve enlistees served for 6 mos of Active Duty training and often did not go to Advanced Individual Training. Enlisting was a last-chance effort to beat the draft and kept you off Viet Nam levies.

In the SWA wars of today, the NG and AR are actually very likely to deploy, and are trained up to it. That is the result of Colin Powell, who served as a LT in Viet Nam, and was determined the country would not again drop the burden on a “forgetable” draftee demographic.

Innocent people were shot, and it was a mess in many ways, but I’m pretty sure that not all the protesters were just standing around and maybe lobbing a tear gas canister or two back. I haven’t seen that particular film yet, but that day’s protests were part of a much larger calendar of protests which included some level of rioting and throwing things at the troops.

To be clear, I do not endorse the shooting of protesters, but it wasn’t totally one sided, and people who said it was justified were not necessarily just being jerks. I don’t agree with them, but there are two sides.

re: #346 Sionainn, the Nasty Devilbitch

It wasn’t my idea and after 22 years, I thought things were great. Apparently not. *sigh* Oh, well, I just hate it for my 10 and 12 year old girls. I think I’m going to be much happier personally. I don’t want to spend my life with someone who doesn’t like me and did a really good job of hiding it for years apparently. It came as a shock to every person we know.

Ayup.

I’m really the only one who has taken the entire thing fairly well, even though I’m the wronged party. I’ve been maintaining for my kids. Also, I deal with my emotions and get them out of the way, then figure out what I need to do and move forward. It’s all I can do. Plus, I don’t feel any guilt whatsoever because I was willing to do whatever I needed to do to make it work and he said nope, it was too late for that. Gee, thanks for saying something in the first place when it wasn’t too late.//// I’m good, though. My ex-husband from my marriage from 18-21 is coming to visit me for the week and help me out. ;-)

Thanks so much! I’m moving in a few days to a new place due to getting a divorce. I don’t think I’m going to have cable, but I bought a new t.v. that will stream from the internet, plus I’m going to get Hulu and Netflix.

My sympathies on the divorce. I didn’t want minw and thought things were getting better but sometimes, as you say, it’s for the best. What sucks hardest for me was being (and still being) alone after nearly 20 years in our case but we’ve stayed reasonable for the boy’s sake.

We get along, especially now that we’ve agreed on things and the papers are filed. The house is in escrow and should close in the next couple of weeks. I chose a place about 0.5 a mile from his apartment so that the girls have the same bus stops no matter who they are with and if he has to stay late for work, I can grab them and bring them home, feed them, or whatever when it happens to be his week and he doesn’t have to drive across town to pick them up. It’s really all about the girls at this point and their well being. We both agree on that. Together, we make one really damn good parent! LOL.

Oh, and you just never know. My mom died in 2010. My dad never was going to date or get married or be in any kind of relationship. Boom! He got married at the beginning of July to a wonderful lady who had been divorced for 20 years and wasn’t looking, either. You just never know…and I’ve never seen my dad this happy, ever.

If you ever decide to visit, I have a pad you can crash at and I know most of the best bars and clubs in the area. If none of that is your thing, there is no shortage of excellent food of a wide variety, American and ethnic and in-between. Failing that, the Mall of fucking America is within driving distance, and there’s no way you couldn’t find something there that fits your fancy.

See my comment at 310. Even better, watch the documentary. Let me know when you find the “violent mob.” And the outrage was immediate and on damn near every campus in the nation, as soon as the footage hit the news.

I was at Ohio State at the time and there were guardsmen at every entrance checking IDs. I, of course, had lost mine, and used my roommate’s ID to get on campus. The only thing that saved my sarcastic smartass self was that I knew many of the guys who were guarding/checking IDs, so they let me pass.

Creepy time on campus—I was sort of a fringe activist (i.e., I wasn’t in SDS, but I let some of them hide out at my apartment.)
