Trump Attacks San Juan Mayor, Trump Officials and Right Wing Media Eagerly Echo

Politics • Views: 39,575

Donald Trump is at one of his golf courses for another weekend vacation, but he woke up in a rage this morning, grabbed his iPhone, and fired off one of the most vile series of tweets ever, attacking San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz because she voiced a rather mild criticism of his very obvious lack of engagement with the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico.

He kicked it off with a deranged, paranoid claim that Mayor Cruz was “told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump.” This guy.

“They want everything to be done for them.” Translation: “Puerto Ricans are lazy.” This isn’t a dog whistle, it’s an air raid siren of overt bigotry.

Meanwhile this is what Carmen Yulín Cruz has been doing while Trump plays golf and relaxes at a luxury resort.

Other Trump officials promptly echoed Trump’s vicious comments, because of they did.

And the right wing media, always eager to jump on a racist Trump-incited bandwagon, promptly followed suit.

It’s hard to continue being outraged day after day by this rotting pumpkin in an ill-fitting suit, but this really is one of the worst episodes yet in this rotten presidency.

Well, because of the posters here on this board, I figured that I’d watch the Vietnam documentary.

I think my favorite Google invention is the Chromecast. There’s always a larger selection of streaming options to watch than a regular “smart” television.

“Clash,” the half-assed term the media uses when they don’t want to acknowledge that the man’s claims do not bear any resemblance to objective reality.

The great majority of the political media continues to fail at its most basic job. They remain studiously blind to two blatant facts:

1) tr*mp is ambulating human garbage and is wholly unfit to be president.

2) the Republican Party is a cancer on the nation, wholly absorbed with its project of electing loons and radicalizing its base in a positive feedback loop of malice and willful stupidity having tax cuts for the rich as its only goal.

Any political ‘reporter’ who will avoid these two madly capering 800-lb gorillas in the room is necessarily reduced to ‘palace intrigue’ level gossip mongering relating to the byzantine power struggles that always occur in decadent and despotic regimes.

We got a two-fer here: Racism and bootstrap-ism:

Asked about San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz requesting help for the American territory after it was devastated by Hurricane Marie, Bauer said “I’m a state’s rights guy.”

“Look, I believe the federal government has a role and responsibility to come in and help, but local leadership is supposed to lead, not the federal government, and so it really falls on the backs of the people that have been elected, and make no mistake, resources have been given,” Bauer said about the catastrophe. “Eleven major highways cleared, 10,000 people down there, you’ve got on the ground a four-star general, 11 points of distribution, 500 gas stations with gas, air-dropped supplies in places where they can’t get to major hubs, $40 million available right now, so things have been done.”

“The federal government has come in, but my feeling is the federal government’s role is not to come in and take over,” he continued. “As a local guy that’s served in local elected office, I wouldn’t want the federal government to ever come in and take over.”

Addressing the squabble between Trump and Mayor Cruz, Bauer sided with the Republican president.

“Well keep in mind the mayor is the one that actually struck first,” Bauer explained. “Here the president is doing everything he can, two other major catastrophes. My house was flooded four feet, I helped myself. I realized theirs is much worse than mine, but I think the mentality too often is to turn to Washington every time you turn around, and local leadership needs to take this by the horns.

“If the federal government comes in and helps, that’s great. But again, this is a territory, they have to take care of themselves and we have given them an unbelievable amount of supplies, but to fault the president when he’s personally coming down on Tuesday, sent members of his staff, wait a minute, we want a full understanding before we immediately send funds down there,” he added.

That is your modern GOP in a nutshell: “I did alright for myself, even though it was nowhere near the same scale, so they should be able to get by on their own! GRAB YOUR BOOTSTRAPS, YOU LAZY BEANERS!”

The conclusion is inescapable: US Republicans are actively evil. They thrive on the misery of others. Misery for others is the natural result of all the actions they take in office, unless public pressure obliges them to momentarily pretend to be decent.

So it really doesn’t matter what Republicans say. They can be judged exclusively on what they do, and that will send them all to Hell in due course.

Hopefully it really does implode. The obvious move for Republicans to do on taxes is to remove the politically difficult things like elimination of the state and local tax deduction after enough of a struggle to convince the stupid in the media that ‘deliberation’ and ‘compromise’ took place.

The resulting hot mess would be tax cuts only, and I think that would get unanimous approval from Congressional GOPers. They’ll use ‘dynamic scoring’ as needed to lie to the media that this won’t increase Federal deficits, while planning to use the massive deficit increase to justify future cuts to non-defense spending.

The people of Puerto Rico were ‘beat-down’ by 2 major hurricanes within a short period of time. I could see it in the media photos where seemingly much time passed before I saw photos showing evidence of road clearing. On the contrary, to me, roads seemed chocked with damage and debris longer than normal. Road clearing is vital because that’s how help arrives. I think this is evidence they were whipped and an emergency situation was quickly developing. Our response to help them was wholly inadequate. My opinion.

In disaster relief, one of the first objectives is getting infrastructure restored so that resources can flow out to those who are not near the resources. Stacking up MREs and bottles of water on the docks doesn’t mean a damned thing if people out in the sticks are stuck behind blocked roads with broken water pipes and downed power lines.

85
makeitstop  Sep 30, 2017 • 1:53:41pm

Josh nails it.

As I’ve read and reread these hideous three tweets which I transcribed below, I’ve realized they are not just a disgrace but something like a primary text of Trumpism. Everything is there.

Things non-white people say are dictated by “the Democrats.” Non-whites aren’t political actors.

Every conflict quickly boils down honorable and white soldiers, police and first responders versus non-white ingrates, complainers and protestors. In fact, the very actions of the latter group dishonors and assaults the sacrifices and purity of the first.

This may all sound inflamed and dramatic. It is. But look at the language about the Puerto Ricans who “want everything to be done for them” and the first responders and military service members. Look how clearly it matches the Trump’s imagery of black NFL players and protestors dishonoring veterans who sacrificed everything.

The core and essence of Trumpism is a racist morality play. It plays out again and again, just with a different troupe of actors in each town.

Most of the people comparing Texas and Florida to Puerto Rico have no idea of the variation among hurricanes. Harvey was a flood event for the most part. The wind was barely a factor in Houston. On the other hand, Puerto Rico was completely raked over by high winds. it’s a totally different problem when most of the roads are blocked by multiple trees. People can’t just get out and clear the road with hand tools.

A road…..and also a ferry.

So glad none of the Port A people said anything bad about Hair Furor or they’d have the free kitchen shut down by the new temp. HHS secretary.

In disaster relief, one of the first objectives is getting infrastructure restored so that resources can flow out to those who are not near the resources. Stacking up MREs and bottles of water on the docks doesn’t mean a damned thing if people out in the sticks are stuck behind blocked roads with broken water pipes and downed power lines.

that this has to actually be said out loud and pointed out to some people is astounding

Speaking of finger twirling, not all that long ago I caught a few seconds of one of his speeches. His index finger and thumb were extended, then he made the “OK” sign, and then the index finger and thumb were extended again. He literally spelled out “LOL” with his hand while he spoke. In case you missed my comments in the previous thread: We had a big storm here last night.

A tough old snow shovel works great on mud and gravel. I borrowed one from the coffee shop to clear the nearest crosswalk. A homeless-looking woman told me that four died when their pickup truck was caught in a cross-flow, two adults and two kids, and somebody among them was her cousin. Not a reliable source, but coincides with what else I’ve heard. I was glad to see two guys who live near the incident walking around unharmed. They were the likeliest candidates among those I know.

I can’t even mention the other flooded place in the same comment. I am so sorry for their long recovery ahead.

re: #144 Eclectic Cyborg

Trump doesn’t even fucking do that. He just calls it how HE sees it.

Well, he calls it how FOX and Friends sees it.

It’s worth remembering that when Trump speaks/tweets, these aren’t his own thoughts in the sense that he has pondered them for some time and come up with them. He doesn’t think like that - he isn’t very bright, and he doesn’t think about things other than himself. He reacts viscerally and spontaneously to everything that happens in the moment, goldfish-like. And like most white Americans of his age, he is becoming more demented, and the bright colours and bald-faced emotions of FOX become his thoughts, as their emotive cult erodes whatever might have existed of his worldview and replaces it with the one they made.

When Trump speaks/tweets, he is saying the words that make up the id of FOX viewers. This is why they love him so much - because he speaks the emotions of the cult aloud, not because he wants to convince them, but because he is one of them, just without a public face to hide it. He essentially has no thoughts of his own at all, just the pure brainwashing of FOX.

Right wing media has made the monsters around us. To save America, it must be destroyed.

4:37 PM - Sep 30, 2017

Somebody here the other day posted a tweet from someone that used to interview Trump on Fox. I think she mentioned that The Donald would always say that The Apprentice was always the #1 show on TV. And she would think…no it is not, he’s BS’n.

This would go on and on. And she would check the ratings and they would show they were going up and soon he had the #1 show.

I thought the story was full of it and have no idea if it ever was #1. But it did make one undenying point.

A con man will say everything is great because he wants everyone to think everything is great.

And he will repeat and repeat until some people buy in. Freetoken commented a lot about his tactic of repetition back before the election last November.

Yeah. This is what he is doing. And he knows Puerto Rican people aren’t listening, they are busy fighting for survival.

He’s saying it to the Trump Army he will rely on to shout down anyone that doesn’t think Trump is the Greatest President Ever. They all live here in America. Puerto Rico be damned.

Trump and the GOP in congress want nothing to do with people who have been impacted by natural disasters - they are losers - allowing themselves to be impacted by climate change - which doesn’t exist.

The respect and admiration the world had for the US under President Obama dissipated after about 3 days of the trump regime. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the US would become a totalitarian police state - but there it is.

No, this is worse than Katrina by an order of magnitude, simply because PR is an island, so far away from CONUS; it’s extremely difficult for private charities to send enough aid fast enough to make a difference and that aid that does make it is getting bottlenecked in port because the entire island’s infrastructure is completely smashed.

The things that need to be done to get aid out, need to be done by the feds/military and there just isn’t enough of them (and enough heavy equipment) there right now.

Exactly…the Trump administration had time to stage supplies and equipment and get the people required set up and ready to go once Maria cleared the island, but they didn’t. Instead of being proactive, they are acting like the “conservatives” they claim to be and are being purely reactive to all of this (and only because the media hit was coming down on them).

They hit on every talking point but if you review enough of the activity you can see where they contradict themselves. You know what happens when a Democrat criticizes Trump right now? The Republicans go to their old playbook. Democrats are called out for hating Trump and it’s all politics and they don’t want to help make America great and they have always been a problem.

Democrats should just do what they can to help and concentrate on that.

I think the Republicans are doing a pretty good job destroying themselves. Might be good for the Democrats to stand on the sidelines maybe fan the flames a bit and every once-in-a-while squirt a small bit of lighter fluid on it to keep it burning.

At the same, Democrats should force the Republicans to own Trump and the GOP 100% for the current state of the country, and stop talking about impeachment NOW.

I’m trying to find some good new music and having a hard time. Could be my mood.

I’m getting in the mood for Halloween with selections from my gigantic file of Halloween music. Do y’all want me to list everything in my Halloween Mix Tape file?! (bounces excitedly)

There are almost 100 songs just in the top level of the folder. I’m not sure I really have the patience to type them all out…
