Looks like things might be getting hot in Spain, and I ain’t talking about the weather. Catalonia is on the brink of a unilateral declaration of independence, something Spain absolutely rejects.
So now it comes down to a high-stakes game of chicken between the Madrid government and the Catalan separatist government. What will Madrid do? Arrest the Catalan separatist government? Such a move would provoke massive civil unrest - that in turn could lead the central government to dissolve the Catalan government completely and send in the military to restore order, which would (presumably) be met with even more civil unrest.
Interesting times, indeed.

They note:
In the years following the Civil War, Lee largely stayed out of the public eye and avoided postwar politics. Despite being indicted, Lee was never tried for treason, due mainly to the intercession of Ulysses S. Grant on his behalf. However, although he submitted the necessary documents, Lee was never returned to U.S. citizenship during his lifetime; instead, Congress would posthumously restore his citizenship in 1975.

I think this will end up being put down by the Madrid central government pretty quickly - they’ll put the kibosh on it ASAP.
Catalonia has no separate military to defend it’s theoretical sovereignty and I’m pretty damn sure no one of any consequence in the European Union is going to recognize Catalonia as an independent republic.
They’re on their own. And that probably won’t last long. The Madrid government will probably declare a state of emergency, dissolve that Catalan parliament (as per Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution), arrest the separatist leaders, send in the military or the gendarmes to restore order and then install a caretaker Catalonian government until the situation is “normalized”.
Standard procedure, I’d think…..pretty straightforward.
Anyway, off to bed…..work beckons tomorrow. Good night, Lizards.

At this point in time, after Hurricane Katrina, there were upwards of 20 IMT’s and thousands of wild-land fighters deployed to operate evacuation centers, clean roads and other infrastructure, and distribute food and water.
The current response is a utter failure by trumps administration.
Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
IMT 1 (McGowan) has been tasked with establishment of an incident support base for the receipt and distribution of commodities, supplies and resources
.
IMT 2 (Zombro) is coordinating with other agencies to plan and prioritize emergency
road clearing.
FDNY IMT 2 (Kane) has been tasked with assessment of damage to critical infrastructure including roads, water systems and communications.
Hurricane Maria, U.S Virgin Islands
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
IMT 2 (Bird) has mobilized to St. Croix and is managing a logistical staging area for incoming responders while preparing for FEMA operations.
IMT 2 (Parrish) has mobilized to St. Thomas and is supporting the receiving and distribution of emergency commodities to aid in the relief efforts.
Hurricane Harvey,
Texas A&M Forest Service
Texas IMT 2 (Hanneman) has mobilized to College Station, TX to support recovery and mitigation efforts, surveying impacts on local fire departments and distributing donated fire equipment.
Hurricane Irma Recovery
South Florida Parks, National Park Service
IMT 2 (Foust) is overseeing site assessment, debris cleanup and emergency stabilization within national parks in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina

As someone else pointed out in last day or two, Trump and company are trying to do disaster relief on the cheap. People are dying because of it. Exhibit #527 in support of Trump don’t care
One might suspect the reason that is happening is because the White House wants to prove that FEMA doesn’t need to be funded properly.

Interesting perspective. In the past, I always felt it was the opposite, i.e., to denigrate and lower the better side (e.g. “all politicians lie”, “both parties are the same”, etc)
But with a festering puddle of fuckslime like trump, yes, I completely see how both-siderism helps to superimpose a nice, normal, “presidential” suit over his hideous naked flab.

Garish displays of “patriotism” seem to be all the rage these days. I don’t recall so much of this stuff at any time in my nearly 60 years, including when we were in a much larger shooting war.
I tend to distrust this forced, over-the-top flagwaving bullshit. It seems like they didn’t do that much of it even in WWII. Is this more of the “WWII envy” that was so apparent on the Right after 9/11 and during Iraq? The need for an existential threat to prove how manly and tough we are?
I think it really ramped up with Bush War 1. Kuwait.
Remember the bit about we weren’t going to treat our soldiers like we treated the Vietnam soldier’s returns.
And you had Lee Greenwood with God Bless the USA in the mid 80s. That started to appeal to a certain American.
It has been building. Trump is going full on wrap yourself in the flag and sing the anthem building on the past…even The Southern Strategy. It all adds together to get the mess we have now in my opinion.

re: #163 TedStriker
In a odd way, it’s mindblowing that he does this now, considering how he made his bones carefully culturing and tending his public persona and image.
But this is how his persona and image has always been presented - a larger than life arsehole. It’s not like his public image has previously been one of a magnanimous, shrewd businessman. On some level he’d like it to be that, but what ultimately matters to him is popularity, and if people cheer him and tell him he’s smart, it’s basically the same thing. Being a larger than life arsehole, however, is just fine in US Culture - US media exists to amplify celebrity, and a thing or person’s worth and moral value is directly proportional to its popularity. So it’s not really surprising that his optics now are so appalling, because being appalling and terrible doesn’t make you any less popular in the American media. Actually, it makes you king.

I started playing guitar about a year after graduating from high school. From 3rd grade on I had been in band (clarinet, sax, then on to French horn, trumpet, flugelhorn). I wanted to sing and just couldn’t figure a way to do it while playing trumpet :-), so guitar it was as accompaniment.

Via The White House Press Pool as provided to PoliticusUSA,
Trump said, “On behalf of all of the people of Texas, and… if you look today and you see what’s happening, how horrible it is but we have it under really great control, Puerto Rico. And the people of Florida who have really suffered over this last period of time with the hurricanes. I want to just remember them, and we’re going to dedicate this trophy to all those people who went through so much, that we love, that are part of our great state, really a part of our great nation.”

I just realized that insanity can be added to that list. Keeping people fearful, angry, agitated and outraged 24/7 will literally destroy their minds in some cases.
And while we’ve currently been talking about the horror of what Sinclair is doing to TV local news, remember back when the Dixie Chicks were the object of scorn:
One of the most striking (pro-war events) took place after Natalie Maines, lead singer for the Dixie Chicks, criticized President Bush: a crowd gathered in Louisiana to watch a 33,000-pound tractor smash a collection of Dixie Chicks CD’s, tapes and other paraphernalia… (my note: This was a Cumulus radio station event.)
Who has been organizing those pro-war rallies? The answer, it turns out, is that they are being promoted by key players in the radio industry — with close links to the Bush administration…
Most of the pro-war demonstrations around the country have, however, been organized by stations owned by Clear Channel Communications, a behemoth based in San Antonio that controls more than 1,200 stations and increasingly dominates the airwaves.
And an article about the congressional hearings on radio consolidation included:
At times likening the embargo to Nazi book-burnings and McCarthy-era blacklists, lawmakers said Cumulus’ action illustrated the potential danger of allowing corporations to amass nationwide broadcasting networks.

re: #65 Dr Lizardo
Is the Catalan Independence movement a truly independent attempt or are Russian bots fueling that too?

Could be both.
re: #266 Hecuba’s daughter

False dichotomy. From what I heard most Catalans were against, till Madrid started being dicks about it, plus Russia feeding the division the way they did here.
re: #266 Hecuba’s daughter

Door #3:
Catalonia’s the wealthy region of a largely impoverished Spain, and leaving is being pushed by a local government that’s know for corruption and a minority (about 40%) that likes the idea of leaving Spain and keeping their money.

“What a waste that $ was on fucking Don King.”
As a Black American, what pisses me off to no end is the simplistic view many like Trump has of us. I’m offended that they seem to think I’ll vote for a politician who is supported by someone else simply because that suggestion is given by someone who is black. I think Carson, West, Elder, Alveda King [my own cousin,] Manigault, Silk and her sidekick, and the other high-profile black Trump supporters are not only idiots, they’re self-absorbed, attention-seeking d*cks who are looking to others they perceive as being better than themselves for validation. GOPers love to say that blacks who vote for Democrats are on the “Democrat Plantation,” but the truth is that it is the GOP that has a real plantation for blacks who are members of their party.
How do I know this? Because as soon as one of “their blacks” doesn’t toe the GOP line, they get attacked and denigrated, and called a n*99*r. It was only after the RNC turned against Michael Steele that he suddenly remembered that life is harder for black males in “these United States.” He was perfectly comfortable carrying their piss as long as he was one of their top tools, but when that changed, he was all about “Feel sorry for me. Look at what des white folks are doing to me. Look at how unfair they’re being to little ole me.” I heard what he was saying and understood what he was saying, but I had not one bit of sympathy for him because he not only had none for Persons of Color, he had none of Muslims, LGBTQ Americans, none for a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her body, the poor, and no concern about the welfare of many other American citizens.
Steele kicked us in the *ss when he had the power to do so, and when he began to complain, I kicked his in return by dismissing his concerns the same way he had dismissed the concerns of his fellow Americans. I’m not usually a vindictive person, but I can be very vindictive when I need to be. When it comes to Steele and the other black suck-ups in the GOP, I can be very vindictive when GOPers turn on them, and I don’t regret it because they know right from wrong and make a conscious choice to do the wrong thing.
Chuck C. Johnson may have been suspended from Facebook again. Developing…

Diamond and Silk are paid promoters of Trump. They’re in it solely for the money, and 50Cent did the right thing to turn down Trump’s dirty money.
re: #289 majii
You know, I gotta wonder whether Trump ever REALLY thought he could win over blacks, or maybe the small number of black people he manages to bring into his orbit are REALLY there to allow whites to support him without feeling racist - “Look! These black people support him! Therefore he CAN’T be racist!”
It’s “Some of my best friends are black” writ large.
None of his “appeals” to blacks are really anything but appealing to the stereotypes of his base - all blacks live in the ghetto, you get shot going out for a loaf of bread, you have no jobs, etc. His base really believes the “Democrat Plantation” stuff, and are totally incapable of seeing the deep, DEEP racism inherent in it.
I realize many people here have issues with Michael Moore, but I’m finding it difficult to find any issues with this list - any reason (besides self-destructive greed, incompetence and lack of political will/conscience) this couldn’t be done?

Russia Provides New Internet Connection to North Korea
BY: MARTYN WILLIAMS
OCTOBER 1, 2017FOREIGN AFFAIRSA major Russian telecommunications company appears to have begun providing an Internet connection to North Korea. The new link supplements one from China and will provide back-up to Pyongyang at a time the US government is reportedly attacking its Internet infrastructure and pressuring China to end all business with North Korea.
The connection, from TransTeleCom, began appearing in Internet routing databases at 09:08 UTC on Sunday, or around 17:38 Pyongyang time on Sunday evening. Internet routing databases map the thousands of connections between telecom providers and enable computers to figure out the best route to a destination.

Some time with Google tells me the colors aren’t correct for Army. In the reply thread the poster says they saw it elsewhere and reposted it and later corrected it to Navy versus Tulsa. The uniforms match up for that to be Navy and they did play yesterday but there is no mention in game recaps of any kneeling during the anthem.
My guess is it’s out of context and not what the tweeter is claiming.

I updinged you on this, but I shouldn’t have been so hasty. First, I haven’t found any evidence that this is Army. Second, it may possibly be from Navy vs. Tulsa this weekend (Tulsa is the Golden Hurricane, which appears to be what the end zone letters are spelling). Third, there is no evidence that the team shown is kneeling during or with any other regard to the national anthem. Fourth, the image looks a little shoppy to me.

At first I thought that was a dinosaur bone.
It’s quiet and Sunday night and so I will go OT.
During a normal week I am just like “eat whatever and run the next morning with no issues” but of course there are races coming up this weekend and after a bad decision on Friday involving Mexican and margaritas (which are normally fine but maybe not race day prep twice in a row now…) I’m being all paranoid. Sucks for meal planning.
On the bright side, I smashed my previous record for a 10k this weekend. (Course was a little short, so it sounds a lot better than it is, but still was really good.) Just under an hour. I might almost be a real runner now. ;)
