After the tragedy in Jimmy’s hometown of Las Vegas, he sends love to everyone affected, talks about the major gun violence problem we have in this country, calls out the senators who are in the pocket of the NRA, and asks for common sense and action from our elected officials to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.

Our country is so fortunate that the Jimmy Kimmel’s of the world are not afraid to speak up and out against the insanity of this failed administration and of the important political and moral issues of the day.

It’s because decades of dumbing down the populace have left us with children in major political offices, a complicit media obsessed with ad revenue, and business leaders who are playing both to further line their pockets.

Well, reading into it, the law doesn’t apply to the President or Vice-President.

So I guess it’s okay for the VP to threaten purges in his own party.

After 9/11, the entire US govt reoriented itself to face the threat. Reorganized the US govt, enacted the Patriot Act, and set about doing all kinds of actions domestically and overseas.

Since 9/11, there have been far more killed in gun violence than Americans killed on 9/11 (or 9/11 plus the first responders who succumbed to their injuries/ailments), and the GOP response has been…

*crickets*

Only when the perpetrator is a terrorist of the right physical persuasion will the GOP move heaven and earth, but they do nothing when the violence/carnage is the background noise that they think is music to their ears.

GOP attitudes to gun deaths in America are worse than just depraved indifference. So far, having ridiculously common mass shooting incidents in the US has been politically favorable for the GOP, so they are presently doing all that they can to increase the frequency of massacres.

For example, there is no other credible explanation for the rollback of Obama-era restrictions on unstable people having access to guns they did early this year.

We live in a country where the biggest concern during “Fast & Furious” was that a border patrol agent was killed and not that the agents involved had recorded hundreds of straw purchases that the local and state prosecutors would not touch due to the slip-shod fashion in which this nation regulates firearms. Or that the “whistleblower” they championed had initiated the only illegal sale during the investigation in order to spite his superiors, lost track of the guns after the sale, and then “blew the whistle” to save his own ass after one of the guns turned up at the border agent’s murder.

It’s clear that Trump failed Puerto Rico, and that FEMA is signaling that they hope to get 25% of Puerto Rico back on the grid in a month is a sign that they severely underestimated the problems and lack the means to restore power faster (insufficient utilities crews on the island, rebuilding from scratch, lack of equipment, etc.)

Ah behold the power of no expectations.

This is Trump off the telemprompter. Twitter Trump. Trump’s real personality — when words are not being carefully selected for him.
Trump knew — because everyone wrote about it and TV talked about it relentlessly — that the big question today in Puerto Rico was whether he could show some actual empathy, some human kindness to people he didn’t know but who were still his constituents.
And, even knowing that, Trump delivered a navel-gazing, self-championing, victimhood-seeking speech that reeked of tone-deafness and out-of-touch-ism.
Even for this President, who has redefined presidential — and not for the better — this is a truly remarkable low.
But he wasn’t done.

Regarding the Las Vegas incident. I didn’t think a bump stock would work with a tripod, too much added mass to get enough recoil to move the gun and reset the trigger. Is there any news that Paddock had modified the guns for full auto (meaning receivers, sears and trigger groups) or did he really just use bump stocks to get the same effect?

Either way they’re a horribly irresponsible product and there’s no reason for them to be legal. I’d wondered how long it would be before one was used in a mass shooting incident, and Las Vegas just proved their capacity to maximize carnage.

I seem to remember hearing a clip of Trump last year during the campaign, an old tape of him yucking it up on the Howard Stern show, when Howard asked when was the last time he cried. And Trump said he didn’t remember. So Howard asked what would make him cry. Trump says he doesn’t know. Howard asked, “if Melania was in a car accident, would you cry?” And Trump said, “I don’t know, maybe if she was hurt in the boobs.”

I might not be remembering this correctly, but a lot of shit was said on the Howard Stern show.

I don’t believe Trump has ever cried about anything, and if Melania was shot in the boobs he wouldn’t cry either. But he would yell at her for getting her boobs all shot up.

Yes, and that’s deeply fucked up too but so far I haven’t seen any info that Paddock did this work. And it is work, even with a jig it takes some machining skill and a mill to modify the receiver and then you’d still need an auto sear, auto selector switch and a auto trigger group. Bump stocks are far more insidious because you can just mail order them in most States* and with a little practice you largely get the same effect.

* California made bump stocks and other “multi-burst trigger activators” illegal to manufacture, use, import, sell or possess in 2010.

I still cannot grasp how it’s legal to sell something, the ONLY POSSIBLE USE for which is to make an illegal weapon, with the fig leaf of telling buyers that it’s illegal to actually use the parts you just bought.

It’s like Prisoner 777 in ‘Invader Zim’, when Zim asks him for the plans for the schematics for the Massive:

I kinda figure that somewhere in Russia, there’s a Random Wingnut Name Generator, to name Facebook groups for gullible American wingnuts.

The first word has to be something like Liberty, Patriot, Freedom, Conservative, American, etc.

Then the second word has to be some noun that compliments it, like Tribune, Eagle, Soldier, Centurion, Patriot, Warrior, etc.

Of course, someone has to vet the output to avoid “The Patriot Patriot”, etc.

You forgot Christian, Common Sense, Pro Israel, 2nd Amendment, etc.

New Jennifer Rubin

If your political base is irrational, get a new base

I like this paragraph:

Now with the reins of power firmly in hand, the shell of a great national party finds itself at the whim of what amounts to a mob. The populist mob, amplified by the right-wing media, seeks contradictory things (repeal Obamacare, but don’t touch their health care) and remains mesmerized by a set of economic fables (e.g. immigrants steal jobs). Its political identity is warped by resentment of minorities, secular Americans and immigrants. The mob seeks emotional catharsis, not tangible, incremental change. Unsurprisingly, its political leaders are now virtually indistinguishable from the right-wing entertainers who for a couple decades fanned their white grievance. The core of Trump’s base is immovable because it is irrational; experience and evidence will not influence it.

Say what you will about Dubya, he actually went out and talked to the people of NOLA, listened to their stories, and offered words of comfort. This prick sees a natural disaster as only one thing: An opportunity for more free press.

On Sept. 9, 1965, category 4 Hurricane Betsy hit New Orleans and overnight caused flooding that would not be exceeded until Katrina. The next afternoon LBJ flew on Air Force One to the city. He didn’t content himself with staged events but went out among the people, most famously to a church being used as a shelter by black New Orleanians. There were of course no lights, and he had to hold up a flashlight to his face so that people would recognize him when he announced, “I’m your president, and I’m here to see that you get some help.” The next day he sent a 16-page (that’s right) telegram to Sen. Russell Long of Louisiana detailing relief plans.

I hated LBJ for several reasons, but not for his handling of this disaster. We’ve fallen very, very far.

Here’s the problem: Jennifer is the problem. Conservatives like Jennifer have been the problem for years, have been cultivating and reinforcing this mob again and again to reach their goals. When people pointed out how the angry mob was getting out of hand, how it was getting violent, and how it was on the verge of taking over, Jennifer and her fellows attacked the people sounding the alarm. Like a pack of von Papens, they assured folks that the mob could be controlled, that it could be harnessed for “good.”

But now, like in all violent revolts, the rebellious mob has turned on those who nurtured and grew it, seeing in their calls for moderation and incrementalism the very sort of “liberalism” they were convinced to rebel again. And now Jennifer is speaking out, not because she’s had a change of heart, but because the mob has turned on her.

265
Eclectic Cyborg  Oct 3, 2017 • 3:46:43pm

I keep thinking of the “good guy with a gun” thing as it pertains to Vegas and how utterly fucking usless it would be.

Just play out the scneario:

You’re Joe American with a CCW and a handgun on you. You happen to be on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay and know there is an active shooter at the end of the hall.

So you decide to make the decision to try and stop him (boneheaded, I know but let’s just go with this).

Obviously the shooter isn’t going to let you in to the room. Trying to shoot through the wall isn’t the best idea. The easiest way would be to break through the door.

Even if you somehow manage to do this (guess what? Most hotel doors are pretty thick) , you’ve lost the element of surprise. If the shooter is armed to the teeth with automatic weapons, all he has to do is turn around and spray the doorway with gunfire as soon as you bust in. Then you’re down before you can even aim and pull the trigger and he can go back to his killing spree.

Being able to squeeze a shot off in time and hit him would be a minor miracle. Getting a shot off that incapacitates him would be a once in a lifetime stroke of good luck.

You have much better odds of winning the jackpot at most slot machines in Vegas than coming out of this scenario anything other than dead.

Note “Turned evil 1977.” That was the year that conspiracist radicals took over the NRA in a move that as been likened to a coup d’etat. Young Wayne LaPierre had a role in that and has been around ever since. The radicals had been around since the early 60s, a probable reaction to the Civil Rights movement, but it took them quite a few years of scheming, lying, and subversion to take over completely.

The mob is always an interesting topic here. No one is really sure what their role is here anymore. I really doubt they just blew away like a sagebrush in the wind.

I have heard that they were involved with the local waste disposal here in Vegas at some point, but that might just be speculation and conjecture based on the fact that has occurred in other metropolitan areas.

They’re simply despairing over how they went from being the leaders of the revolution to being next under the guillotine. I joined the NRA in 1963 as a youth member. Younger people would not recognize it as it was in those days. It really was a public service non-profit mainly concerned with competition shooting and with improving the general level of marksmanship and gun safety. It commented on proposed legislation but was as likely to support new controls as to oppose them. It supported the National Firearms Act of 1934, for example, and was normally opposed to open carry.

June of 1972 was the break in. August 8, 1974 was the resignation. I wish things moved faster but sometimes they don’t & I’d rather that time was taken carefully so that in the end there is no escape for the Pumpkin Pinochet.

Yep, it was only us, some Middle East Nations, some African Nations and, oddly enough, Japan that refused to endorse.

I hope Muellers report ends up bringing Trump down but I have my doubts.

re: #207 Blind Frog Belly White

I kinda figure that somewhere in Russia, there’s a Random Wingnut Name Generator, to name Facebook groups for gullible American wingnuts.

The first word has to be something like Liberty, Patriot, Freedom, Conservative, American, etc.

Then the second word has to be some noun that compliments it, like Tribune, Eagle, Soldier, Centurion, Patriot, Warrior, etc.

Of course, someone has to vet the output to avoid “The Patriot Patriot”, etc.

That can be written into a CheckString method checking for pre-defined bad strings.

An important reminder. Also, we knew about the break-in before the election (just as we knew who Trump was before the election), but a large chunk of the electorate simply paid no attention or did not believe it. It really took Senate hearings before public opinion made Nixon’s leaving inevitable, though some of us did see it coming much earlier, notably when the Attorney General and his deputy both quit rather than obey a Presidential order.

What the country group that performed before the shooting thought, until it actually happened to them: m.dailykos.com

I’ve been a proponent of the 2nd amendment my entire life.

Until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was. We actually have members of our crew with CHL licenses, and legal firearms on the bus.

They were useless.

We couldn’t touch them for fear police might think that we were part of the massacre and shoot us. A small group (or one man) laid waste to a city with dedicated, fearless police officers desperately trying to help, because of access to an insane amount of fire power.

Enough is enough.

Writing my parents and the love of my life a goodbye note last night and a living will because I felt like I wasn’t going to live through the night was enough for me to realize that this is completely and totally out of hand. There rounds were powerful enough that my crew guys just standing in close proximity of a victim shot by this fucking coward received shrapnel wounds.

We need gun control RIGHT. NOW.

My biggest regret is that I stubbornly didn’t realize it until my brothers on the road and myself were threatened by it.

We are unbelievably fortunate to not be among the victims killed or seriously wounded by this maniac.

Yeah, a lot of them were insisting that the USNS Comfort couldn’t have been sent any earlier than it was because the hurricane was still there.

It escaped the lot of them that you cut orders NOW so the ship can be ready to get to Puerto Rico the minute the storm passes….

It could have been to Benghazi in, like, 30 minutes …
