Did he have incendiary ammunition? Don’t know if it would’ve caught fire if he didn’t, unless he got lucky and got it to spill near something live.

When he was with the Astros (briefly), I went to all of his his home starts at the Dome. Watching him bat was, shall we say, interesting. Nike even made a commercial out of how funny he looked at the plate. Anyway, one night he lunged at a pitch nearly losing his grip on the bat and hit a double of the wall. The Astros’ dugout was in hysterics, and even Unit managed to laugh. Great times.

wait:

But one reason, beyond outright racism, why white people are less frequently charged with terrorism than Muslims in the United States lies with the little-known fact that while federal law does define “domestic terrorism”, it does not codify “domestic terrorism” as a federal crime. (At least 33 states do, however, have anti-terror legislation.) This is partly out of concern that such a statute could go a long way toward criminalizing thought and trampling on the first amendment.

After he took the band’s name as his own legal name (and has had a much more commercially successful career since), he made sure the original band members, his friends, were taken care of:

The ownership of the Alice Cooper name is an example of the value of a single copyright or trademark. Since “Alice Cooper” was originally the name of the band, and not the lead singer (a la Pink Floyd, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, Amy Meredith, etc.), and it was owned by the band as whole, Cooper continues to pay a yearly royalty to his original bandmates for the right to use the name.

Been wondering about that since I learned of Tillerson and big Russian Oil deals for Exxon Mobil.

Pretty sure Mueller will be interested in looking at that too. One of the reasons he has all those lawyers that specialize in money moving, offshore banking, and funny deals like way overpaying for things like real estate.

Elevated firing positions are a law enforcement nightmare. The first of the modern mass murderers, the Texas Tower sniper of 1966, killed 14 and wounded 31 on a fairly ordinary day with no large gatherings around.
Incidentally, a lot of civilian “good guys with guns” did fetch their rifles and return fire, to no effect other than to add to the chaos and possibly cause at least two of the wounds. Officer Ray Martinez was nearly killed by fire from the ground right after he and another officer shot and killed the sniper on the library observation deck.

Years ago, I once caught one of my cats bouncing my great grandmother’s wedding set up against the dryer. She liked the sound, I guess.

try a lost golf ball on hardwood floors at 2am. Our cat liked to play hockey with it.

Y’know, no offense intended to people who go to casinos & enjoy gambling but it does fit the need for stimulation / thrill seeking behavior part of the Hare Psychopath Checklist pretty well. Also the impulsivity and irresponsibility portions. Like, I’d seriously recommend anybody who spends much time doing that to take a deep look at why it appeals to them and ask if it’s nourishing the healthier aspects of who they are.

For consideration: Jet fuel is a hell of a lot harder to ignite than the 87 octane stuff you put in your Volkswagen. Psycho shooter might not have known that.

He was a pilot and owned 2 planes in the past. He was probably aware.
I wonder what he wanted to do with all the explosive material in his car, and why (thankfully) he stopped shooting after 10 or 11 minutes.

86
VegasGolfer  Oct 4, 2017 • 9:46:05pm

The reporting of the shooter trying to shoot gas tanks is irresponsible. I worked in the airport control tower for 11 years, and from observing the Mandalay Bay over the years, there are many many targets the shooter had and every shot that went over the concert, many went toward the airport and the general avaition ramp, where helicopters and multi-million dollar private jets are parked, not to mention over Las Vegas Blvd.
And I’m positive there were airplanes landing on the runways that parallel the strip when the shooting began.

Evening y’all.

From the previous thread on land yachts:

re: #321 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

People continually tell me my wife’s ‘79 land yacht must be 10x safer than anything on the road today. Yeah, well, it may weigh 5000 lbs, but the safety devices are primitive and the thing would ram the engine block through the firewall if I hit somebody else with it. Like it or not, my 2010 Malibu saved Mrs. Fish’s life last November, where in her own ‘97 she probably would’ve died.

The chairwoman of our village board just totalled her Seventies pickup truck in a car-deer accident the other day. She was injured (though I don’t know how severely, I’ve been told I may have to run the next village board meeting).

I constantly get the “how could you drive your little car? I’d be scared to drive something like that?” I’ve hit two deer with it now, and although there was a fair amount of damage back in August, the car was repairable, my wife was uninjured, and my stitches in my hand surgery were ripped open through inertia from a sudden stop (and that was the only injury).

The difference between Seventies automotive engineering and my 2013 car are almost as if they are different conveyances.

With a .50 BMG firing an incendiary or tracer round maybe, if the tanks were near empty and full of fumes. Otherwise I kind of doubt it.

Not just that someone can shoot into a crowd of thousands with a fucking machine gun (don’t EVEN get pedantic or I’ll really go off) from a hotel room and eh, another day of feed for the news gods, lots dead, too soon, thoughts and prayers… rampant corruption worldwide and who know what weapons available for a guy with $$ and a death in a blaze wish from that same hotel room in range of aircraft.

As noted when I went through Aviation Firefighting School in the Navy.

We put two pools of fuel out (large flat tanks), one of JP-5 (Navy jet fuel), and one of aviation gasoline (100+ octane gasoline). Neither will catch fire even tossing a cigarette into them, because the vapours are what burn, not the liquid.

JP-5 is formulated in such a way that it produces very low vapours (while gasoline evaporates easily). Aviation gasoline makes huge fires.

It seems unlikely an international airport would have storage tanks that would be near-to-empty with a lot of fumes in them (besides being unsafe, you can’t really sell fumes).

I imagine the airport will be looking at a security plan. It may even need to be moved. Even if this guy wasn’t trying to do anything with the fuel tanks (stray rounds), it shows he might have hit parked aircraft. Worse, if he could have hit aircraft landing or taking off, he might have brought one down.

But it’s JET FUEL!!! Jets fly REALLY FAST! It must be WAY more explosive than gasoline!!!
/////////////////////////////////////

When I was young, Mom and Dad’s yard backed onto a field, which backed onto orchards. basically the edge of the town we lived it. The yard is big, 1 3/4 acres, and has lots of mature trees, especially fucking Elms and Sycamores that constantly drop sticks. Over the course of the year, we’d pick up a LOT of sticks, enough to make a substantial pile, which we’d burn off once or twice a year.

Generally, Dad would use kerosene to get the fire going, which would blaze up nicely but not too much. Once, we were all out of kerosene, and Hoch’s garage was closed. So, Dad decided to try using gasoline. He knew to be careful, so he made us all stand way back, and lit it very gingerly at the edge of the pile.

At first, it was just like the kerosene, but you could see a vapor cloud forming and then *WHOOOMP!!!* and the vapor cloud lit off, with enough force to blow a few sticks off the pile. Then it burned REAL GOOD!

This was the last time Dad used gasoline for that purpose.

Then, when the flames died out, she’d douse it AGAIN! You could see the vapor cloud build, and then she’d toss a match into it.

I always wondered why she still had eyebrows.

Moving an airport is not feesible. Many airports have hotels very close to the airport environment, and if I’m not mistaken, some hotels are inside the airport boundaries.
As a side note, there was talk of moving McCarran to sloan or Jean which is 20-30 miles south of Vegas.
I thought it would be pretty cool, you could have a high speed rain from that proposed airport to where the airport is now and have people dispurse from there.
Just imagine how many casinos you could put on the airport property.
But that would never happen.

I had an old Thirties gas oven (which required putting a match to a touch hole to start the oven).

One time trying to light the oven, apparently the valve had not been completely closed and gas had built up around the burners. When I put a match to the touch hole, woomph! Flame shot out of the whole oven.

Much of my hair was singed. Fortunately it didn’t catch fire. I still had eyebrows. I got rid of that oven.

Sophomore year we rented an apartment off campus. Shitty little place, the kind of crap hole that you get around colleges. The stove was…problematic. When the landlady was showing us the place, one of the then-current tenants said, “Oh, yeah. The pilot light on the stove doesn’t work, so we just do this - and put a lit match over a vent hole on the oven floor and turned on the gas. 1…2…3…4… *WOOFF* , and it lit.

I realized later that the guy doing it was basically saying ‘fuck you’ to the landlady, who had grown visibly more anxious waiting for the gas to light.

They did fix it before we moved in.

One more …

Paul Ryan. I gotta tell you, just saying that name gives me the creeps.

Today I learned that Paul Ryan and a small group of Republican congressmen used to meet regularly to plot the GOP agenda. They called themselves the Jedi Council. Oh. Lord. Help. Me. These guys are Darths-in-Training.

Horribly disgraced Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was a member of the Jedi Council. I suspect this is where Price got help to come up with his plan that he only reimburse the taxpayers for his seat on an airplane when he made us pay for the whole damn airplane.

But, here’s the important part.

Speaker Paul Ryan last week urged the White House to reconsider ousting Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, his longtime friend who had come under fire for often using taxpayer-funded private jets for travel, according to two people with knowledge of the call.

Ryan urged Kelly to reconsider and touted the Georgia Republican’s experience in Congress and work in the administration, one of the people familiar with the call said.

Okay, when Ryan runs for president again, and he will, let’s make sure people know that his Jedi Council has a very, very high bar for ripping off the taxpayers for your own personal pleasure.

Every time I was in Catalonia I would hear the occasional grumbling about independence or poorer parts of Spain were sucking on wealthy Catalonia’s tax money (hear the same kind of talk in the USA), but no serious effort to break away other than a few wingnut parties.

From what I understand, it’s been rumbling since Franco’s death, and probably even during his regime. When I was there in the late 70’s, I heard the same grumbling for the same reasons. Actually, more than grumbling. Basque separatists were a serious terrorism problem for Spain for decades… to the point that when Al Qaeda did that big train station bombing in Madrid, it took many hours and much evidence before anybody was really convinced it was Islamic anything, most Spaniards’ first guess/assumption was the Basques are at it again.

Managers at CaixaBank private banking in Madrid have been proactively calling customers to discuss the situation in Catalonia and dispel concerns, according to one private-banking client, who asked not to be identified discussing the matter. To help protect clients, CaixaBank is considering a temporary move of its legal domicile to the Balearic Islands if plans for independence go ahead, newspaper El Mundo reported Thursday.

“The political situation is a pain in the neck for these banks,” Cesar Molinas, founder of Multa Paucis, an investment consultancy firm, said in an interview. “They don’t want clients in Madrid to see them as Catalan banks, nor clients in Barcelona to see them as Spanish banks. They’re treading on thin ice.”

The Death Loop (goes to Crooked)

It’s been two minutes since the shooting stopped. Everyone who will be shot is shot. Most who will die are dead, but some are still dying.

A snippet of video, just recorded, is being shared, a person running, the rat-tat-tat of rifle fire in the background. (Automatic? Semi-automatic? This will matter later.)

Reporters are retweeting eyewitness accounts. “We heard the shots then everybody started running. Oh my god. :(” The phones on the bodies are starting to ring.

“My brother just texted me saying there’s an #activeshooter and to stay safe.” Active shooter. The first touch of unreality. When did we start saying that? When did ordinary people—civilians—start using that term?

[Embedded content]Still angry about the lopsided vote, Trump lashed out during the bill-signing process and released a bizarre companion statement. In it, he denounced the bill as being “seriously flawed” and said it contained “a number of clearly unconstitutional provisions.” He also downplayed Russia’s election interference, and bragged about what a successful businessman he is, saying, “I built a truly great company worth many billions of dollars.”

No, he did not build a truly great company. He inherited a company that his father spent decades building. His current net worth is approximately the appreciated value of the buildings that company owns/manages, minus whatever debt he’s saddled it with.

There was a time when knowing your trees was a matter of life and death, because you needed to know which ones were strong enough to support a house and which ones would feed you through the winter. Now most of us walk around, to adapt a term devised by some botanists, tree blind.
But here’s the good news: Tree blindness can be cured. A few years ago, I knew two types of native trees, oak and maple. I considered all conifers to be pines. Then in 2012, I took an ecology course in Wisconsin in which we learned to identify 14 tree species — which, in the chilly upper Midwest, actually gets you pretty far. Suddenly the largest, most conspicuous living beings in my environment were no longer strangers. The trees lining my street in Madison with the rough, saucer-size leaves were basswoods. The giant in my backyard with the diamond bark and opposing rows of leaflets neatly lined up like soldiers was an ash.
- Gabriel Popkin
My take:
I cured myself of Plant and Flower blindness by gradually learning the names of the flora that I suddenly started seeing everywhere. Old hikes were new again. Never realized how some plants bloomed only in Summer or Fall or how the blooms of Spring could be further divided into early, middle or late Spring. An awakening for me and it does take my mind off the awful presdent we have.

Just taking in the natural world around you can be quite refreshing.

When I first moved here, I could identify the irises and daffodils in my flowerbeds, the elm tree in my back yard and spruce trees in my front yard, and the flowers in my neighbour’s flowerbeds.

As for the rest of the area, it was all just “short-grass prairie” to me (including my “lawn”).

Since then I’ve learned to identify the different types of common plants and flowers in the short-grass prairie, learned about the invasive species (Russian thistle—the plant that makes the big tumbleweeds you see in Westerns, and some of the “attack plants” that have thorns or spikes), the naturally-occurring plants, &c.

Not too many trees here in the state that proudly calls itself “The Home of Arbor Day” though, at least not this part. You get away from the river, and there are no trees (even in some of the towns and villages, though we have lots of trees in mine and they are protected from damage by village ordinance).

The scariest tree by far to me though is a honey locust. (They do keep people from wandering around your yard though.)

If I try to buy a few hundred pounds of fertilizer, the FBI will visit my home to measure my acreage. Assuming I don’t have much… I end up in jail. If I try to buy a case or two of allergy medicine, and I’m not a pharmacy… I end up in jail.

But if I want to buy a high-powered semi-automatic rifle, and bump stock, and hundreds of rounds of ammo — and then another a week later, and the week after that and the week after that, for a total of 33 in year… No big.

A lot of folks will look at a forest and see the beauty, the flora, fauna, the leaves changing. All I see is what great firewood some of it would make. Maple dries fast, smells nice, but leaves a lot of ash. Oak dries slowly but burns a long time. Black walnut is like iron to cut, but will melt your wood stove. Hickory, apple, ash, all great burning wood.

And fallen black walnut pods make it sound like you just hit a cue ball when you’re cutting the grass, many times per pass.

they want the rules (esp the amendments) to mean whatever it is that they want.

they dont want to do the hard work of understanding what they first meant, what they evolved into, what the courts did over time, how they got clarified, or more obscure, why they are complicated, nuanced, not black and white or originalist, and why good people have differences of opinion as to what they meant and mean.

they also dont want anyone else to “have” stuff and rights they dont think you should

It’s really not hard to understand. The GOP wants their serfs to have the illusion of being able to fight back & a civilian AR-15 is perfect for that - much as the ability of the medieval serfs to rebel was non-existant; only the barons and the like could do that - not actually have the means to do so. Hence the NFA and heavy regulation of explosive fertilizer. Without heavy support weapons and explosives as well as a resupply route from outside the nation, an insurrection will not succeed. Might cause a lot of deaths which will be useful to the powers that be for propaganda/oppression purposes, but they won’t, in the end, succeed.

there is (and likely wont be) a singular mass of “the people” (with a command structure) who will all rise up unified and with legitimacy against a future administration of the federal government.

there would never even be an agreement on what that government would have to look like / what it would have to *do* to justify such an uprising

Trump Loyalists Lose Patience With Congressional Russia Probes (goes to Politico)

Despite the title of the article, that’s not what most of the Republicans interviewed told them.

There is a brain-dead GOP committee member from my state (way down in the article) asserting that Nebraskans think the whole thing is a waste of time and a bunch of hooey. Apparently he hasn’t been home to Nebraska (or at least this part of it), because in my overwhelmingly Republican county there seems to be great concern about whether and which government officials might have been compromised by Russian operations.

“People think it’s crazy. I think your average person in Nebraska has concluded there’s nothing there. That’s certainly my conclusion,” said J.L. Spray, a Republican national committeeman from Nebraska. “There’s so many phantoms, and now we learn about Facebook and Google. I think we’re just swinging at air. The big ‘duh’ is the Russians are f—-ing with us on Facebook. Any 9-year-old kid would figure that out.”

Mr. Spray has nothing to do with the investigation, and apparently doesn’t have anything to do with the voters, either.

(That might be a good thing: If the national GOP is disconnected from the Republican voters in this state, that certainly won’t help the GOP in the next election. It wasn’t many years ago that we had a Democratic representative from Nebraska, representing NE-2. The district is somewhat gerrymandered but is closer than it appears.)

Stunk and White have no problem with dangling participles. They note the long history of participle-dangling from famous writers in the English language. (You did drop the apostrophe from “don’t” /pedant).

80 year old Black Walnut trees means you have a gold mine on your property.

I know some people here in Ohio that bought some property (late 70s) and found they had several real nice tall Black Walnut trees. They sold some to a hardwood lumber company and used the money to help build their house. It paid for a good portion of it.

The NRA essentially owns the country. Nothing will change long as this remains true, and it seems like the very act of challenging them makes them stronger because of how many instantly react with unshakable contrarianism that forever thwarts any efforts and hopes for change.

I’d love for a sitting Congressman to call the NRA and their puppets cowards. I want LaPierre to be scared shitless of people voting against his narrow vision of guns and his puppets.

To continue my thought above, we need to change the conversation back to what the shooters doing being wrong. The theme has shifted too far in the direction of what people could have done to prevent themselves from being targets and how they could have defended themselves. We would classify this as terrorism if it were threats from ISIS. We need to treat it as that. It’s time to talk about minimizing the chances of it happening again.

‘Reflexive contrarianism’ seems to be the pattern of all of this. Know it’s going to be rough for a long time. Are there things we can do from here that may help, beyond pressuring our damn congresscritters every day? Organizations that have been effective?

The toughest problem right now is distribution. I live on the West coast, and most stores open and close depending on the inventory they have. It’s jaw-dropping seeing fast food stores closing for a couple of days. Aid has faced the same problems. It’s getting easier tho.

Hospitals outside the metro area have been in critical state, because they aren’t getting diesel, medicines, and other help. Even the state government seems to be ignoring them, because some has been asking on AM stations for the Secretary of Health to contact them, despite said Secretary having been to the west the day before.

Interesting. A good guy without a gun

Jesus Campos had no firearm when he found Stephen Paddock and approached his room on the 32rd floor of Mandalay Bay on Sunday night.

Paddock, who had rigged cameras in the hallway and on the peephole of the door, saw Campos coming and fired through the door, hitting him in the leg, said Dave Hickey, president of the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America. The union represents Campos and hundreds of security guards at Mandalay Bay.
When Campos was hit, he radioed casino dispatch and told them his location—and Paddock’s.

“We received information via their dispatch center…that helped us locate where this individual was sequestered,” Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters Tuesday.

the nra’s power is not in its lobbying budget
it’s that its members and those non members you mentioned are mobilized and engaged in the political process. they donate, write letters, etc.

so yes, granted re the non members this is a sizable lobby of orgs and individuals.

so even though the 98 is not 98, still i’d settle for half being equally and oppositely engaged.

The problem with this argument is that it doesn’t stand up to evidence either. The flipside of “‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens” is that lots of other industrial countries have guns and don’t have this problem.

My libertarian friends thankfully are mostly pretty chill. And they’re against racism and defend groups like BLM. TBH I don’t purge people. Just not my nature.

I’m a big believer in purging wingnuts. I do Facebook for fun, and reading a former friend’s devolution into psychosis is not fun.

I have some friends who keep noxious wingnuts on their friends list, who then make noxious and utterly psychotic comments on their posts, and I wonder why they want to maintain contact with people who are dangerous and insane.

Something funny about wingnut friend posting Jack Nicholson’s “You can’t handle the truth” from A Few Good Men being needed to be seen by every liberal since if I recall the movie, Nicholson’s character is covering up a murder and Nicholson and director Rob Reiner are both huge liberals.

The whole point of the scene was to highlight how hypocritical Nicholson’s character’s self-righteousness is. He’s a monster trying to justify himself, and somehow people have twisted his message into a positive one by stripping it of the context.

I’ve never seen the movie honestly just people mimicking that line. I just think it’s funny that my wingnut friend wants it directed at liberals even though the actor who said it was a liberal as was the director who directed it and I think Aaron Sorkin may have even been that film’s screenwriter.

The problem with this argument is that it doesn’t stand up to evidence either. The flipside of “‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens” is that lots of other industrial countries have guns and don’t have this problem.

That’s because the problem is not just the owning of guns. It is the idea of owning guns for the purpose of fighting with them. Americans keep guns for the purpose, implicit or explicit, of having to use them on other people - to ‘defend themselves’, ‘defend their property’, ‘stop criminals’, and so forth. It is a purpose ingrained into their Culture. They own and keep guns with the expectation that they will use them to fight with in civilian life - to settle disputes, to kill bad guys, to ‘save lives’.

This is why I suspect none of them would ever give up a gun, not to save any life, not to save any number of lives. The Gun, and their Guns, cannot by definition be a problem, because a problem implies a moral deficit. Guns are moral by definition because they are the bringers of life. It would be akin to asking people to give up food to cure cancer. In American Culture, there is no connection between the sacred Gun in my hand and other people shooting other people. They exist totally separate from each other, unconnected.

For consideration: Jet fuel is a hell of a lot harder to ignite than the 87 octane stuff you put in your Volkswagen. Psycho shooter might not have known that.

Jet-A is diesel with antifreeze. The flash point is 100º F. A bucket of jet fuel is a convenient receptacle to extinguish lit matches, unless air temp exceeds 100º.

yup - rules, enacted into laws could be really simple:

1. Control your gun/weapon/arms at all times
2. Severe criminal, civil and social responsibilities and liabilities (including losing the rkba) for use, misuse, discharge, storage, transfer (temporary or permanent), etc.

if you cant accept #2, dont own, possess or handle a gun

why american society cant recognize the 2A exists WHILE ALSO providing stiff accountability / responsibility penalties has always baffled me

it does not infringe on anyone’s right to simultaneously acknowledge their implicit responsibility to others

If you want to use heavy weapons or full-auto anything like an M2 or whatever, I would actually be OK with that…PROVIDED…

…that it be kept at a range/storage facility that has 24/7 armed security at all times, except when used on the range and that transfers from one facility to another be done by licensed, bonded and insured couriers.

(this is just a quick idea, I’m sure there’s holes in it)

414
lawhawk  Oct 5, 2017 • 9:46:01am

Caveat: I don’t own firearms, and have never fired a live round.

Bump stock is meant to override the need to press trigger each time. It’s my understanding that firearms are designed to fire X rounds per second, and that exceeding that would potentially damage the barrel or other mechanisms since undue heat/stresses would cause the barrel to potentially deform (basic science’y stuff).

If rounds are fired, it causes heat and stress on gun.
If you fire the gun even faster, you’re putting more stress on the gun and increase the heat since the gun isn’t cooling down (even if momentarily) between rounds?

So, the end result would be a gun that is less reliable, more likely to be damaged, and might be rendered unusable because of rifle droop or other damage?

Is that correct?

415
sagehen  Oct 5, 2017 • 9:50:46am

That’s why printed (plastic) guns are throwaways… it only takes 2-3 shots to melt enough of the barrel’s interior that your next shot is likely to explode the whole damn thing.

re: #414 lawhawk

Sort of. The mock AR-15s, if built to the original -15 (semi-auto) spec should be able to sustain reasonable auto rates of fire, since that weapon is built to be a select-fire as the M-16. God knows what quality the many AR-15 knockoff manufacturers actually build to.

The bump stock doesn’t override the need to pull the trigger every time, it just uses the recoil to facilitate pulling the trigger really really fast. So maybe it risks damaging the trigger mechanism.

As for the overheating problem, since the civilian models are essentially the same as the military alternatives but with with a different action, overheating isn’t likely to be any more of an issue than it is on the actual full autos.

I thought Seal Team was not that good. Very disjointed and kind of uninteresting honestly. I’ll probably give it one more episode before deciding to keep watching or dumping.

I did enjoy The Brave. Thought the pacing was better as well as just the overall general production. I’ll probably keep watching this one.

re: #132 Dr Lizardo

I do wonder if Russia had anything substantial to do with the recent Catalonian independence matter? I know Catalan independence has been in issue for quite awhile, but I’m sure that the possibility of breaking up an EU member state of long standing would be far too tempting for the Russians…….

The strange thing is that in the Scottish Indyref, if the Russians were interfering at all, they appeared to be doing so in favour of the remain side. (That episode with a Russian jet buzzing Scottish airspace as the campaign entered the final stretch comes to mind.) Of course the Brexit vote would be coming not long after, so if one wanted to be a conspiracy theorist, one could theorise that the Russians would calculate that it would be more destabilising to the UK if Scotland voted to remain in the UK, and then the UK votes for Brexit, given that it was pretty well known that Scotland wouldn’t vote for it.

Less reliable and less accurate. As has been pointed out here, using a bump stock gives up a fair amount of accuracy due to the movement of the gun itself. That didn’t matter to Paddock, because he wasn’t aiming at one person at a time, he was just shooting into a general area filled with people, so he was bond to hit a lot of people just by spraying the area with fire.

But back to the heating problem - Shiplord Korel mentioned yesterday that the guns would overheat pretty quickly. That’s why Paddock had multiple rifles with bump stocks - he rotated through them in order to let them cool down somewhat.

As for the gun humpers who are buying up bump stocks - fuck ‘em, let them destroy their precious rifles by burning them up. Serves ‘em right.

I don’t want to click on links at work, but if you google “bump stock overheating” they talk about various things overheating such as gas ports and glass tubes. I’m not sure what is glass in a gun like that. I read something yesterday somewhere, maybe here, that talked about that was why he had so many guns, because he could only shoot one for a little bit, and then had to switch to a different gun to let it cool.

Walmart took down listings for bump stocks on its website this week. Cabela’s, the outdoor retailer, also took bump stocks off their website this week. The company, recently purchased by rival Bass Pro Shops, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

I just re-read Heller, and Scalia’s audacity is breathtaking. That opinion amounts to “The militia clause of the second amendment is a pain in the ass, so we’ll just totally ignore it to get to the conclusion we want.”

This from the supposed great textualist and originalist of Constitutional Law.

One of my state’s Representatives, who now wants to move to the Senate to do more damage:

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) announced on Thursday that she will be running for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN).

In touting her conservative credentials, Blackburn said she was proud to be described by her opponents as a “knuckle-dragging wingnut.”

Would it have stopped the Vegas shooter?

Also, I can only fire one gun at a time, so the point of buying multiple guns is moot.

Does it have to have stopped this specific crime to be worth considering? How many deaths would a measure need to prevent before you think it’s worthwhile?

From someone in a position to know:

Firing a 100 round magazine non-stop through an AR-15 will cause the gas tube to glow cherry red and start to melt. Continuous 30 round bursts will make the gun so hot it will malfunction in short order. It takes much longer for the gun to cool than it does to fire the magazine. That is the likely reason the Vegas shooter had a dozen rifles. He was alternating them while they cooled.

“Would it have stopped the shooter of specific incident X?” is categorically the wrong question to ask. The correct question to ask about proposed gun reforms is “does reform Y have a reasonable chance of reducing gun deaths and injuries?”

What would have stopped the Las Vegas Shooter?

Friends and Family.

The shooting community needs to step-up and police itself. If there is a concern —even a hint of illness or instability, take their guns away, or report to law enforcement your concerns.

Family, especially has much power with individuals in this regard.

It would have significantly slowed him down. And yes, you can only fire one at a time, but if you pile them up, preloaded, you can run through them in succession before anyone gets to you.

I still like the way I phrased it a while back, which was something like this: Originalism consists of a present day jurist projecting his biases onto the founders to see if they agree with him — there is no recorded case of this quest failing.

Most people won’t make them. A lot of people who might otherwise make something won’t because the law says it’s illegal. A good portion of those that will anyway will be injured by their own creation.

If guns everywhere make everything better, then why doesn’t the NRA allow people to carry as they please at its conventions etc?

The answer of course is that the NRA is not that stupid. The point that the venue owners force gun-free zones on the NRA for its events is just bullshit.

By its own rhetoric, a gun free zone is just a killing zone to the NRA, so it really is remarkable that all their events are precisely such killing zones.

Sorry for the late reply. I’m trying to find new internet hotspots.

Thank you! {{{CleverToad}}}

[Embedded content]

Stay in touch, as the hotspots allow!

What you’re reporting about the hospitals is heartbreaking and infuriating. Hope they’re able to get what is needed, and soon.

I’ll keep nagging my congressmen every day, to remind them both immediate aid and long term rebuilding will be needed. Keeping fingers crossed that you folks don’t get more storms coming through.
