When he was with the Astros (briefly), I went to all of his his home starts at the Dome. Watching him bat was, shall we say, interesting. Nike even made a commercial out of how funny he looked at the plate. Anyway, one night he lunged at a pitch nearly losing his grip on the bat and hit a double of the wall. He was a pilot and owned 2 planes in the past. He was probably aware.

The reporting of the shooter trying to shoot gas tanks is irresponsible. I worked in the airport control tower for 11 years, and from observing the Mandalay Bay over the years, there are many many targets the shooter had and every shot that went over the concert, many went toward the airport and the general avaition ramp, where helicopters and multi-million dollar private jets are parked, not to mention over Las Vegas Blvd.
And I’m positive there were airplanes landing on the runways that parallel the strip when the shooting began.

The chairwoman of our village board just totalled her Seventies pickup truck in a car-deer accident the other day. She was injured (though I don’t know how severely, I’ve been told I may have to run the next village board meeting).
I constantly get the “how could you drive your little car? I’d be scared to drive something like that?” I’ve hit two deer with it now, and although there was a fair amount of damage back in August, the car was repairable, my wife was uninjured, and my stitches in my hand surgery were ripped open through inertia from a sudden stop (and that was the only injury).
The difference between Seventies automotive engineering and my 2013 car are almost as if they are different conveyances.

I worked in the airport control tower for 11 years, and from observing the Mandalay Bay over the years, there are many many targets the shooter had and every shot that went over the concert, many went toward the airport and the general avaition ramp, where helicopters and multi-million dollar private jets are parked, not to mention over Las Vegas Blvd.
And I’m positive there were airplanes landing on the runways that parallel the strip when the shooting began.
That’s… kinda freaking me out.

As noted when I went through Aviation Firefighting School in the Navy.
We put two pools of fuel out (large flat tanks), one of JP-5 (Navy jet fuel), and one of aviation gasoline (100+ octane gasoline). Neither will catch fire even tossing a cigarette into them, because the vapours are what burn, not the liquid.
JP-5 is formulated in such a way that it produces very low vapours (while gasoline evaporates easily). Aviation gasoline makes huge fires.
It seems unlikely an international airport would have storage tanks that would be near-to-empty with a lot of fumes in them (besides being unsafe, you can’t really sell fumes).

I imagine the airport will be looking at a security plan. It may even need to be moved. Even if this guy wasn’t trying to do anything with the fuel tanks (stray rounds), it shows he might have hit parked aircraft. When I was young, Mom and Dad’s yard backed onto a field, which backed onto orchards. basically the edge of the town we lived it. The yard is big, 1 3/4 acres, and has lots of mature trees, especially fucking Elms and Sycamores that constantly drop sticks. Over the course of the year, we’d pick up a LOT of sticks, enough to make a substantial pile, which we’d burn off once or twice a year.
Generally, Dad would use kerosene to get the fire going, which would blaze up nicely but not too much. Once, we were all out of kerosene, and Hoch’s garage was closed. So, Dad decided to try using gasoline. He knew to be careful, so he made us all stand way back, and lit it very gingerly at the edge of the pile.
At first, it was just like the kerosene, but you could see a vapor cloud forming and then *WHOOOMP!!!* and the vapor cloud lit off, with enough force to blow a few sticks off the pile. Then it burned REAL GOOD!
This was the last time Dad used gasoline for that purpose.

My father’s uncle did that one with a barbeque grill - he didn’t have any lighter fluid so he used gasoline … blew up the grill.

Moving an airport is not feesible. Many airports have hotels very close to the airport environment, and if I’m not mistaken, some hotels are inside the airport boundaries.
As a side note, there was talk of moving McCarran to sloan or Jean which is 20-30 miles south of Vegas.
I thought it would be pretty cool, you could have a high speed rain from that proposed airport to where the airport is now and have people dispurse from there.
Just imagine how many casinos you could put on the airport property.
But that would never happen.

My take:
I cured myself of Plant and Flower blindness by gradually learning the names of the flora that I suddenly started seeing everywhere. Old hikes were new again. Never realized how some plants bloomed only in Summer or Fall or how the blooms of Spring could be further divided into early, middle or late Spring. An awakening for me and it does take my mind off the awful presdent we have.

Just taking in the natural world around you can be quite refreshing.
When I first moved here, I could identify the irises and daffodils in my flowerbeds, the elm tree in my back yard and spruce trees in my front yard, and the flowers in my neighbour’s flowerbeds.
As for the rest of the area, it was all just “short-grass prairie” to me (including my “lawn”).
Since then I’ve learned to identify the different types of common plants and flowers in the short-grass prairie, learned about the invasive species (Russian thistle—the plant that makes the big tumbleweeds you see in Westerns, and some of the “attack plants” that have thorns or spikes), the naturally-occurring plants, &c.
Not too many trees here in the state that proudly calls itself “The Home of Arbor Day” though, at least not this part. You get away from the river, and there are no trees (even in some of the towns and villages, though we have lots of trees in mine and they are protected from damage by village ordinance).
The scariest tree by far to me though is a honey locust. (They do keep people from wandering around your yard though.)

It is my good, planned fortune to be retired and managing the reforestation of 11 of my 19 acres of property. Part of my good fortune includes many 80-year old black walnut trees and a grove of paw paws. Trees are wonderful! Did you know you can use the early basswood leaves as one of the best “lettuces” you’ve ever tasted?

It’s really not hard to understand. The GOP wants their serfs to have the illusion of being able to fight back & a civilian AR-15 is perfect for that - much as the ability of the medieval serfs to rebel was non-existant; only the barons and the like could do that - not actually have the means to do so. Hence the NFA and heavy regulation of explosive fertilizer. Without heavy support weapons and explosives as well as a resupply route from outside the nation, an insurrection will not succeed. Might cause a lot of deaths which will be useful to the powers that be for propaganda/oppression purposes, but they won’t, in the end, succeed.

Despite the title of the article, that’s not what most of the Republicans interviewed told them.
There is a brain-dead GOP committee member from my state (way down in the article) asserting that Nebraskans think the whole thing is a waste of time and a bunch of hooey. Apparently he hasn’t been home to Nebraska (or at least this part of it), because in my overwhelmingly Republican county there seems to be great concern about whether and which government officials might have been compromised by Russian operations.
“People think it’s crazy. I think your average person in Nebraska has concluded there’s nothing there. That’s certainly my conclusion,” said J.L. Spray, a Republican national committeeman from Nebraska. “There’s so many phantoms, and now we learn about Facebook and Google. I think we’re just swinging at air. The big ‘duh’ is the Russians are f—-ing with us on Facebook. Any 9-year-old kid would figure that out.”
Mr. Spray has nothing to do with the investigation, and apparently doesn’t have anything to do with the voters, either.
(That might be a good thing: If the national GOP is disconnected from the Republican voters in this state, that certainly won’t help the GOP in the next election. It wasn’t many years ago that we had a Democratic representative from Nebraska, representing NE-2. The district is somewhat gerrymandered but is closer than it appears.)

The toughest problem right now is distribution. I live on the West coast, and most stores open and close depending on the inventory they have. It’s jaw-dropping seeing fast food stores closing for a couple of days. Aid has faced the same problems. It’s getting easier tho.
Hospitals outside the metro area have been in critical state, because they aren’t getting diesel, medicines, and other help. Even the state government seems to be ignoring them, because some has been asking on AM stations for the Secretary of Health to contact them, despite said Secretary having been to the west the day before.

My favorite is “Good guy with a gun.” Well until Sunday, this was a “good guy.” What I find maddening and I saw Allegro mention it last night or this morning is the constant talking down to people who don’t know everything about guns by gun nuts. This is why I find it hilarious (in a really depressing way) that most of the people I see claiming that they need guns to ‘protect themselves from a tyrannical government’ are the same people bitching about the NFL players not showing that government the proper amount of respect.

My favorite is “Good guy with a gun.” Well until Sunday, this was a “good guy.” What I find maddening and I saw Allegro mention it last night or this morning is the constant talking down to people who don’t know everything about guns by gun nuts. Man it drove me nuts when DF would do that. Okay, I admit it, i don’t know much about guns but I do know this, these weapons are designed to fire rounds rapidly in a short amound of time and that’s their purpose and their purpose in combat is to kill a lot of people in a quick amount of time.

yup - rules, enacted into laws could be really simple:
1. Control your gun/weapon/arms at all times
2. Severe criminal, civil and social responsibilities and liabilities (including losing the rkba) for use, misuse, discharge, storage, transfer (temporary or permanent), etc.
if you cant accept #2, dont own, possess or handle a gun
why american society cant recognize the 2A exists WHILE ALSO providing stiff accountability / responsibility penalties has always baffled me

Sort of. The mock AR-15s, if built to the original -15 (semi-auto) spec should be able to sustain reasonable auto rates of fire, since that weapon is built to be a select-fire as the M-16. God knows what quality the many AR-15 knockoff manufacturers actually build to.

The bump stock doesn’t override the need to pull the trigger every time, it just uses the recoil to facilitate pulling the trigger really really fast. So maybe it risks damaging the trigger mechanism.
As for the overheating problem, since the civilian models are essentially the same as the military alternatives but with with a different action, overheating isn’t likely to be any more of an issue than it is on the actual full autos.

I thought Seal Team was not that good. Very disjointed and kind of uninteresting honestly. I’ll probably give it one more episode before deciding to keep watching or dumping.

The strange thing is that in the Scottish Indyref, if the Russians were interfering at all, they appeared to be doing so in favour of the remain side. (That episode with a Russian jet buzzing Scottish airspace as the campaign entered the final stretch comes to mind.) Of course the Brexit vote would be coming not long after, so if one wanted to be a conspiracy theorist, one could theorise that the Russians would calculate that it would be more destabilising to the UK if Scotland voted to remain in the UK, and then the UK votes for Brexit, given that it was pretty well known that Scotland wouldn’t vote for it.

Less reliable and less accurate. As has been pointed out here, using a bump stock gives up a fair amount of accuracy due to the movement of the gun itself. That didn’t matter to Paddock, because he wasn’t aiming at one person at a time, he was just shooting into a general area filled with people, so he was bond to hit a lot of people just by spraying the area with fire.
But back to the heating problem - Shiplord Korel mentioned yesterday that the guns would overheat pretty quickly. That’s why Paddock had multiple rifles with bump stocks - he rotated through them in order to let them cool down somewhat.
As for the gun humpers who are buying up bump stocks - fuck ‘em, let them destroy their precious rifles by burning them up. Serves ‘em right.

I don’t want to click on links at work, but if you google “bump stock overheating” they talk about various things overheating such as gas ports and glass tubes. I’m not sure what is glass in a gun like that. I read something yesterday somewhere, maybe here, that talked about that was why he had so many guns, because he could only shoot one for a little bit, and then had to switch to a different gun to let it cool.

Bump stocks make it easier to bump fire, but are not required. You can bump fire most any semi-automatic weapon including pistols without any sort of modification.

Left and Right are arbitrary designations based on the seating arrangement of the French parliament of the XIXth century. They are at best descriptive terms, certainly not determinative.
But updated appropriately, the association of the left with a range of views from reformers to revolutionaries and the association of the right with a range of views from conserving established institutions to aristocracy/monarchy remains a useful shorthand.

From someone in a position to know:
Firing a 100 round magazine non-stop through an AR-15 will cause the gas tube to glow cherry red and start to melt. Continuous 30 round bursts will make the gun so hot it will malfunction in short order. It takes much longer for the gun to cool than it does to fire the magazine. That is the likely reason the Vegas shooter had a dozen rifles. He was alternating them while they cooled.

“Would it have stopped the shooter of specific incident X?” is categorically the wrong question to ask. The correct question to ask about proposed gun reforms is “does reform Y have a reasonable chance of reducing gun deaths and injuries?”

It would have significantly slowed him down. And yes, you can only fire one at a time, but if you pile them up, preloaded, you can run through them in succession before anyone gets to you.

The toughest problem right now is distribution. I live on the West coast, and most stores open and close depending on the inventory they have. It’s jaw-dropping seeing fast food stores closing for a couple of days. Aid has faced the same problems. It’s getting easier tho.
Hospitals outside the metro area have been in critical state, because they aren’t getting diesel, medicines, and other help. Even the state government seems to be ignoring them, because some has been asking on AM stations for the Secretary of Health to contact them, despite said Secretary having been to the west the day before.
