A Massive Exposé From Buzzfeed on How Breitbart and Milo Yiannopoulos Pushed White Nationalism Into the Mainstream

Breitbart’s toxic agenda revealed

Anyone who follows Little Green Footballs knows I’ve been calling out the sickeningly hateful content of Breitbart “News” for many years, and documenting the increasing prevalence of outright racism and white supremacism not just in their comment section (long known as one of the worst sewers of hate on the web), but in their articles and editorial direction as well.

Today, Buzzfeed’s Joseph Bernstein has a mammoth exposé on this vile agenda, and the dominant role played by Milo Yiannopoulos, who was made a right wing star by Steve Bannon specifically to legitimize the white supremacist underworld to which he was already deeply connected.

This is an ugly story full of the same ugly people I’ve been covering at LGF with disgust, and it’s long past time that it comes out; these are the hateful personalities who played a huge role in propelling racist icon Donald Trump into the White House: Here’s How Breitbart And Milo Smuggled White Nationalism Into The Mainstream.

The Breitbart employee closest to the alt-right was Milo Yiannopoulos, the site’s former tech editor known best for his outrageous public provocations, such as last year’s Dangerous Faggot speaking tour and September’s canceled Free Speech Week in Berkeley. For more than a year, Yiannopoulos led the site in a coy dance around the movement’s nastier edges, writing stories that minimized the role of neo-Nazis and white nationalists while giving its politer voices “a fair hearing.” In March, Breitbart editor Alex Marlow insisted “we’re not a hate site.” Breitbart’s media relations staff repeatedly threatened to sue outlets that described Yiannopoulos as racist. And after the violent white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August, Breitbart published an article explaining that when Bannon said the site welcomed the alt-right, he was merely referring to “computer gamers and blue-collar voters who hated the GOP brand.”

These new emails and documents, however, clearly show that Breitbart does more than tolerate the most hate-filled, racist voices of the alt-right. It thrives on them, fueling and being fueled by some of the most toxic beliefs on the political spectrum — and clearing the way for them to enter the American mainstream.

It’s a relationship illustrated most starkly by a previously unreleased April 2016 video in which Yiannopoulos sings “America the Beautiful” in a Dallas karaoke bar as admirers, including the white nationalist Richard Spencer, raise their arms in Nazi salutes.

These documents chart the Breitbart alt-right universe. They reveal how the website — and, in particular, Yiannopoulos — links the Mercer family, the billionaires who fund Breitbart, to underpaid trolls who fill it with provocative content, and to extremists striving to create a white ethnostate.

They capture what Bannon calls his “killing machine” in action, as it dredges up the resentments of people around the world, sifts through these grievances for ideas and content, and propels them from the unsavory parts of the internet up to TrumpWorld, collecting advertisers’ checks all along the way.

These are the people who are destroying the United States’ reputation as a forward-thinking tolerant society, and replacing it with a feudalistic paranoid vision of nihilism in the service of unchecked power.

Seems to me that Milo’s “grassroots” image is nothing but a sham and he’s nothing but a high priced political prostitute for the Mercers and Bannon.

I seriously hate Milo for his role in poisoning the minds of many impressionable young Americans. Hopefully they can mature and learn what a shitty person and self-serving asshole this guy is and the people who funded him are.

Repost from downstairs:

re: #218 electrotek

I have friends from multiple interests and I just happen to have people on my FB who share interest in one hobby but have completely divergent views on politics.

It’s most apparent with my friends who are into cars like me. Try being a liberal and into cars, it ain’t easy.

However, when it comes to ex-ravers I knew from years and years ago when we went to warehouses and danced our socks off , we still hold similar left-leaning views.

Although, there have been a few ex-ravers I knew who suddenly turned wingnut and became the biggest supporters of law enforcement. And these are the same guys I knew who used to get caught when our *illegal* parties at warehouses get broken up by the cops.

re: #221 HappyWarrior

Oh God, that’s the worst. The people you know broke the law i.e. underaged drinking, pot, etc acting like “Oh they should just follow the law” when you know damn well about the skeletons these people have in their own closets.

LOL and you can see my reaction when the same people I’ve known from middle school and HS who peddle the “they should follow the law tripe” were the same ones who would always flip a bird at every cop car they see in HS.

This is how young people of today rebel though. My Dad’s generation? They rebelled by protesting an unjust war and a cruel status quo on gender and civil rights. My generation though gets attracted to hucksters like Milo and the Alt-Right and man it makes me weep.

In the YouTube video showing Milo singing “America the Beautiful” while Richard Spencer and his pals do Nazi salutes, right wingers are already posting comments saying Milo can’t possibly be a racist because he’s gay and he married a black man.

Do people actually fall for this ridiculous simple-minded argument?

No, they don’t. That argument is purely meant to reassure the arguer (and anyone who sympathizes with him/her) that what they’re standing for isn’t wrong. It’s basically exploiting confirmation bias; quite literally, preaching to the choir. They know they will not sway anyone with the argument, they just desperately want not to be wrong and are vocalizing whatever they can think of to justify themselves.

Tom Petty bonus track from Hypnotic Eye. Little heard. Now you know it.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Playing Dumb”

Lyrics
Playing Dumb
Tom Petty, The Heartbreakers
CORRECT LYRICS
Lyrics for Playing Dumb by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Got an image of angels a nun and a man
Slappin a ruler cross my little boy hand
Now I turn around, 60 winters on my head.
I’m still throwin’ up some of that food my mind was fed.

Honey I’ve had enough
Honey my time has come
I’m fed up, fed up, fed up
with playing dumb

Well let’s light a candle for every kid
For every soul that was done away with
For every confession that wasn’t on the level
For every man of God that lives with hidden Devils

Honey I’ve had enough
Honey my time has come
I’m fed up, fed up, fed up
with playing dumb
Dumb, dumb, dumb

You live in a mansion with drivers and go-fers
You walk down the hallway in red leather loafers
This may not be your fault but man you in so deep
How can you know all that you know and get to sleep?

Honey I’ve had enough
Honey my time has come
I’m fed up, fed up, fed up
with playing dumb

Yeah, with playing dumb
Dumb, dumb, dumb
Dumb, dumb, dumb

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb
Dumb, dumb, dumb
Dumb, dumb, dumb
Dumb, dumb, dumb

You know, normally I’d dismiss this as a drunk trying to talk himself out of a night in the tank, but after the last couple of years? Maybe we should listen to the man:

Bryant Johnson issued his grave warning to Casper police Monday night after officers were called about the man and his out-of-this-world message, according to an arrest report obtained by HuffPost.

Johnson, who police said smelled of alcohol and spoke with slightly slurred speech, allegedly told officers that “the aliens were coming next year and we needed to make sure to leave as fast as possible.”

And now I just thought of what first contact would be like with Trump in the White House.

Well, the good news is that if aliens did come to Earth, it’s more likely that alien diseases would kill us all in short order. And if not, Earth diseases would do their damnedest to kill the aliens, and that would probably start an interstellar war that would end badly for us. So, Trump or no Trump, same end result.

Is it bad that there’s one legacy of Obama that I’d hope Trump would disravel?

It’s his legacy with Myanmar.

As much as I loved Obama, I felt that he provided way too many concessions to a country that has allowed tyranny to be inflicted upon a vulnerable and helpless minority.

I expect a down-ding on this but it has conflicted me greatly.

The gooberati have had to shift 180 degrees yet again and are back to hating the evil device, as they did when it was an accuracy destroying gimmick but before Vegas and the resulting outcry from mass murder opponents made it a talisman of the Sacred Second.

A sizable portion of our population has been conned into thinking that Breitbart is not only a credible news organization, but that the behavior exhibited by everyone involved — from the sickos like Milo, to the animalistic commenters to the billionaire financiers in the Mercer family — are totally acceptable.

That’s the real problem here. Breitbart has been given carte blanche to do the most reprehensible things possible by their exceptionally gullible target audience. See Alex Jones, Paul Watson and Rage Furby for additional (albeit unnecessary) confirmation.

I see Breitbart and this new right movement as a direct product of the internet. The Internet has done a lot of great things. It can bring people together but it can also well bring people together. And as I said, I think Milo and his brand’s appeal to many young people is that it’s different. To be a hateful bastard is rebellious. To be a boring center left liberal like myself is just choosing the blue pill or whatever dumb metaphor they use.

Chuck C. Johnson is too toxic even for Milo and Bannon.

In the month after the convention, Yiannopoulos and Bannon continued to work closely. Bannon and Marlow encouraged a barrage of stories about Yiannopoulos’s late July ban from Twitter. Bannon and Yiannopoulos worked to distance themselves from Charles Johnson’s plans to sue Twitter. (“Charles is PR poison,” Yiannopoulos wrote. “Charles is well intentioned—but he is wack,” Bannon responded.)

Also, this. Trump offered Ivana the ambassadorship to the Czech Republic, but she turned him down.

Wonder what she’s got on him…

“I was just offered to be the American ambassador to Czech Republic,” the President’s first wife and mother to their children Ivanka, Donald Jr. and Eric, told CBS News in an upcoming Sunday Morning interview.

“He said, ‘Ivana, if you want it, I give it to you. But I like my freedom. I like to do what I want to do, go wherever I want to go with whomever I want to go,” Trump continued. “I can afford my lifestyle. Okay, why would I go and say bye-bye to Miami in the winter, bye-bye to Saint-Tropez in the summer, and bye-bye to spring and fall in New York? I have a perfect life.”

While GOP distracts with Trump’s addled BS, the Senate and House are busy gutting Medicare and Medicaid to the tune of $1.5 trillion dollars.

Yeah, you read that right. $1.5 trillion. That’s real cuts to real health coverage, which means fewer people get covered, or less is covered per person, or a combination.

Either way, it’s a massive cut to the programs, and there’s only one purpose for the cuts: to fund the massive tax breaks for millionaires like Trump. This is brazen theft and redistribution of wealth to the rich from everyone else.

Considering that Medicare is funded out of payroll taxes, this is particularly craven.

They’re certainly morons too but no doubt they’ve seen how pathetic he looks trying to get Charles Murray of the Bell Curve infamy to drink with him or his claims that he “has a guy.” Plus I can’t discount the fact there’s probably some laughing at the gullible autistic kid. “There is no GMO lettuce,” said Nucci. “It made us go: Why are we doing this? We are perpetuating a fear that something is wrong with GMOs. We didn’t feel right doing that, so we chose to take that label off.”

Mann sells other products that do not have the non-GMO verified check, but include copy stating they are GMO-free on the packaging. Nucci said the company is discussing removing that, as well.

And to answer the obvious question, as far as the university doing their due diligence on the speaker before contracting - I think they’re generally open to inviting controversial people to speak in the name of provoking thought and debate. That is kind of the point of a university campus. Most universities, however, aren’t willing to endure a negative PR backlash, and so that’s why protests and social media outcries are so effective when they invite someone truly reprehensible instead of merely controversial.

They don’t have a right to speak anywhere. They have a right not to get arrested, but that doesn’t guarantee them a platform from which to speak. If he gets his ass kicked in public, a few people might go to jail for assault, but it’s not like he can sue them for suppressing his freeze peach.

Here’s an excellent analysis of the Steele dossier, written by a retired CIA Senior Intelligence officer. It’s from September, but there’s a lot of good information in it.

[Editor’s Note: In this special Just Security article, highly respected former member of the CIA’s Senior Intelligence Service, John Sipher examines the Steele dossier using methods that an intelligence officer would to try to validate such information. Sipher concludes that the dossier’s information on campaign collusion is generally credible when measured against standard Russian intelligence practices, events subsequent to Steele’s reporting, and information that has become available in the nine months since Steele’s final report. The dossier, in Sipher’s view, is not without fault, including factual inaccuracies. Those errors, however, do not detract from an overarching framework that has proven to be ever more reliable as new revelations about potential Trump campaign collusion with the Kremlin and its affiliates has come to light in the nine months since Steele submitted his final report.]

Such demonstrations are valuable, but is there really anyone left who is capable of reason that does not already know that the GOP is the Party of Lies?

There are many educated people capable of rational thought outside of politics who, when it comes to their party, believe what they are told, like good little Nazis.

Here’s an excellent analysis of the Steele dossier, written by a retired CIA Senior Intelligence officer. It’s from September, but there’s a lot of good information in it.

I honestly don’t know if ‘John Sipher’ is his real name or a sly pseudonym.

That analysis reads, if anything, better now than a month ago. The one thing I note now and didn’t then is that “Sipher” rubbishes the idea that Orbis had four sources for events at the hotel. What fits that set of facts is that Putin leaked it. He thought Trump would lose, and his main goal was to mess with the legitimacy of the US state. I don’t know how this plays out, but I’ll be very disappointed with Mueller if he fails.

Nothing wrong with this - it serves as a reminder that every politician is human and no one human is without … error (tempted me to say sin but that’s a different can of worms ;)

Yes, but it’s still crazy to have so much riding on the outcome of a single investigation.

We could be looking at mass arrests of t**** administration officials and Congressional Republicans if even half the shit out there can be proven to the level of probable cause.

Conversely, if the investigation turns into a nothing burger, US politics going forward would have two camps absolutely denying the legitimacy of the other side. That would not end well.

Yes, personalizing it is shorthand. Trump might win. But I don’t think so; I’m more worried that he will walk out of this a free and rich man; he could probably spend a billion dollars on his own defense (much of it, shall we say, on the quiet) and still have a ridiculous lifestyle in his dotage. The GOP has an entire constellation of such groups in its lunatic fringe. The only famous group of batshit right wing nuts that is not under concealed orders from the GOP is probably the Westboro Baptist gang.

I had heard of YWC since one of my friends had told me about it, same friend who gave me the heads up about the opening here.

I think Rory’s only problem with the Breitbart story is that the news came out, not that it happened. Republicans are invariably supportive of white supremacy and all other kinds of bigoted shit if they can benefit from it politically while pretending they are not personally guilty.

DF here was a perfect example of that pattern.

DF’s problem would act like he wasn’t part of the right’s continued descent into madness because he would condemn things like Islamaphobia, homophobia, sexism but then he would say he had no choice but to vote GOP. I think for a lot of people, the final straw for him and his character was months after saying he’d never vote for Ted Cruz, he went ahead and voted for him. I’ve suspected for a while that he’s split up with his wife. It’s just not normal for a brand new father to spend as much time away from home as he has, and he’s said a few things on Facebook that could be taken as evidence.

Since his wife’s family was the source of his money (to begin with, anyway), it’s possible that she decided to make a break from the Furby because he’s clearly involved in a lot of shady dealings and is very likely to end up in serious legal trouble eventually.

There were also those moments where the mask slipped and DF would approve of the most astonishingly horrible shit if done by others on Team (R) to help Team (R) ‘win’. That’s why I ended up deciding that all DF’s protestations that he personally was not a bigot were lies. He just didn’t want to be seen as being a bigot, and figured, correctly for the most part, that not being blatantly offensive and issuing a few condemnations would let the charade continue.

I wouldn’t pick on him like this, except this is the pattern for every damn Republican in the country who is not a blatant bigot. They are all ‘good Germans’ with respect to the extremist shit in the GOP.

We’d see his true colors when things like past foreign policy issues would be discussed. He showed no empathy for the people of Iran or Latin America who were negatively impacted by our FP. But yeah the moments where the mask slipped. He was frustrating. From my POV, Milo seems to think others are stupid. He’s invested a large amount of his time aligning himself with white nationalists and pushing their agenda, and he now wants us to believe he’s not a racist? The last part of his non-denial denial pissed me off. He seems to think that because he married a black guy, he can’t be called a racist. If he would spend a couple hours reading America’s history of slavery, he’d know it’s entirely possible to have sex with black persons and still be a racist. Hell, some slave-owners not only had sex with enslaved black females, but also, if those females got pregnant, they sold their own offspring into slavery to make a buck. I’ve never understood some Americans’ love affair with foreigners like Putin, and other foreigners like Nigel Farage and Milo that come here and work to tear our democracy apart, turn us against each other and get well-compensated while doing it.

Odds are the Las Vegas shooting is going to come down to something like “A gun nut was feeling mean one month and decided to use his arsenal for entertainment.”

Preemptive right wing CT bullshit is already all over the internet because if this ends up being the fact pattern, it’s really not good for gun nuts. The most obvious response would be to eliminate arsenals of operational weapons, because who the fuck needs that? Doing that would clearly have limited the ability of the Las Vegas shooter to inflict death/damage.

“Wow. It just keeps happening and cops keep getting away with it.”

GA law enforcement officials killed a white guy in his home here in Paulding County GA yesterday. Their story is that they went there to serve a narcotics warrant, burst into the home, descended the stairs to the basement where Danny Hammett was standing with a “black object” in his hand. They asked no questions and began shooting. After they got to where Mr. Hammett was lying injured, they told the media he had a stun gun. His son has accused them of killing an innocent man. Clyde Hammett said there was no weapon in his dad’s house, and that law enforcement officials didn’t find any kind of weapon in his dad’s hand or near him when they went into the basement. Also, there were no drugs anywhere on the premises. There was a similar incident to this one that occurred in a town about 30 miles from where I live a few years ago. Cops got a “tip” from an informant, busted into a guy’s house, saw him holding a weapon and shot him dead. It turns out the informant had a beef with the homeowner who was a building contractor. Police officers searched the house, found no drugs, and none of them were held responsible for his death. They all walked, including the chief of police who was a part of the “drug raid.” This guy was white, too. I”m sick of out-of-control, fear-filled, trigger-happy law enforcement officers killing our citizens and never being held responsible for doing it. I believe in law and order, but I also believe in prosecuting and convicting cops who kill when they don’t have to.

He was an *old-school* telemark skier who’d been to too many rock concerts and probably drank too much and did too many drugs. Still, he was very warmhearted and was always looking for a reason to smile.

His demise is so heartbreaking. He was alone, outdoors, in a snowstorm, and he had a full vial of sleeping pills…

And of course the biggest challenge is to get them to even start to acknowledge that. I mean, that’s the whole point behind the anthem protests and …yeah.

Speaking of, I knelt as best I could at the sportspuck game last night. It consisted of putting a knee on the back of the chair in front of me, sort of a half-kneel (and an excellent workout for the legs), but the symbolism was I think clear without trying to kneel in the very teeny space I had available in a very steep arena seating setting.

Other than Rage Furby saying he is on the spectrum when he wants to excuse his obnoxious behavior, do we really even know that he is? Also, do we really know that he was ever bullied, other than his bemoaning being a scholarship student at Milton Academy?

I mean, it doesn’t really matter—he’s a total piece of shit anyway—just curious.

Good points. And no it doesn’t matter but I’m trying to find insight into why he seems despised even by people like Bannon and Milo. Then again it could be as simple as personality conflicts.

For someone who fashions himself as a Rohm-type figure, Milo sure seems to ignore what actually happened to Rohm (which is to end up very, very dead in a purge over internal power struggles).

Uh no Paul. Those guys are all yours but continue to blame Soros for your side being filled with miserable bastards.

If we’re known by the company we keep—

He was endorsed by Sarah Palin and three Arizona county sheriffs: Maricopa County sheriff, Joe Arpaio, Coconino County sheriff, Joe Richards, and Pinal County sheriff, Paul Babeu.

And all I can think of is

He thinks he’s different. I’ll predict now but Milo will be irrelevant to the wingnut movement sooner than later and I expect that will make him even more outlandish.

Here’s an idea.

Guns don’t kill people. Bullets kill people.

If you have a magazine containing 100 bullets, and you have a bump stock, you can quickly shoot 100 bullets into a crowd of people with your legal semi-automatic battle rifle. I used to have one when I was in the Air Force. It was an HK91, a civilian version of the H&K G3. I had a local gunsmith convert it to full auto and registered it and paid the tax on it for twenty years until I sold it.

You can also do that if have a legally owned, registered, tax-paid machine gun, like I did.

I suppose we could outlaw bullets, or regulate them so that 5.56 mm or 7.62 bullets are outlawed and 5.62 and 7.68 were the only legal rifle rounds you could legally buy, but that will never happen. Those bullets would blow up your existing gun in you face. The sunk cost of gun owner’s investments would never allow it without a buy-back program. And we’ve got a bazillion guns in this country.

But here is a cheap as shit option. Limit guns, clips and magazines to eight rounds and make possesion of larger clips and magazines a felony with a statutorily dictated sentence of five years in a Federal Gray Bar Motel, with no exceptions for “collectors”.

If you’ve got a gun, a clip or a magazine that can contain more than eight rounds, you go to prison for five years, period. This includes cops, SWAT teams and everyone else in the country.

Like my Da always told me, “If you can’t hit it in two shots, you aren’t doing it right.” (Typical Marine, wasn’t he?)

We beat the Nazi’s with M1-A-1 Garand, which had an eight shot en-bloc clip. If that doesn’t meet the the needs of the NRA, they need to fuck right off, and then keep fucking off until they get back to where they started. Where they should fuck right off again.

It’s not the bullets, it’s the throughput. If you have to to keep reloading every time you pull the trigger eight times, or have an eight-shot machine gun, people get to
run away and you don’t get to shoot six hundred people in nine minutes for Dog’s sake.

Or it could be that in a gathering of assholes, the biggest asshole stands out…or that assholes hate when other assholes make them look even more assholy than usual…or it could be that he really smells bad (he looks like he smells bad). I am tired.

That article made me want to hurl. Can you imagine a story about any murderous asshole who wasn’t a white guy including stuff like:

He sent cookies to his 89-year-old mother in Florida, and he treated his youngest brother and nephew to $1,000 dinners in Las Vegas, the brother said.

or

“Steve took care of the people he loved,” Eric Paddock said, sobbing outside his home this week. “The people he loved, he took care of.”

Gag me with a spork.

No, if Paddock was black, brown, or heaven forbid, a Muslim, the press would be crucifying him to no end.

It’s lazy and dangerous. When your bias is the primary and reflexive basis for your framing you get shallow, lazy work that does nothing to elevate understanding and discourse.

It’s just so damn glaring these days!

Yes. I mean guys like Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, and the former Dixiecrats were bad enough but these guys are another level.

They at least have the excuse that Jesse Helms was born in 1921 (North Carolina), Strom Thurmond in 1902 (South Carolina), they were both well into middle age before Civil Rights was a real thing.

People born in the 1980’s have no such excuse.
