Here’s an idea.

Guns don’t kill people. Bullets kill people.

If you have a magazine containing 100 bullets, and you have a bump stock, you can quickly shoot 100 bullets into a crowd of people with your legal semi-automatic battle rifle. I used to have one when I was in the Air Force. It was an HK91, a civilian version of the H&K G3. I had a local gunsmith convert it to full auto and registered it and paid the tax on it for twenty years until I sold it.

You can also do that if have a legally owned, registered, tax-paid machine gun, like I did.

I suppose we could outlaw bullets, or regulate them so that 5.56 mm or 7.62 bullets are outlawed and 5.62 and 7.68 were the only legal rifle rounds you could legally buy, but that will never happen. Those bullets would blow up your existing gun in you face. The sunk cost of gun owner’s investments would never allow it without a buy-back program. And we’ve got a bazillion guns in this country.

But here is a cheap as shit option. Limit guns, clips and magazines to eight rounds and make possesion of larger clips and magazines a felony with a statutorily dictated sentence of five years in a Federal Gray Bar Motel, with no exceptions for “collectors”.

If you’ve got a gun, a clip or a magazine that can contain more than eight rounds, you go to prison for five years, period. This includes cops, SWAT teams and everyone else in the country.

Like my Da always told me, “If you can’t hit it in two shots, you aren’t doing it right.” (Typical Marine, wasn’t he?)

We beat the Nazi’s with M1-A-1 Garand, which had an eight shot en-bloc clip. If that doesn’t meet the the needs of the NRA, they need to fuck right off, and then keep fucking off until they get back to where they started. Where they should fuck right off again.

It’s not the bullets, it’s the throughput. If you have to to keep reloading every time you pull the trigger eight times, or have an eight-shot machine gun, people get to
run away and you don’t get to shoot six hundred people in nine minutes for Dog’s sake.

Local news reported that the man who brought the crosses, Greg Zanis, drove from Aurora, Illinois.

According to WGN9, Zanis, a carpenter, drove 1800 miles with the crosses to honor the victims. He’s made 20,000 crosses over the course of 20 years for homicide and shooting victims, WGN9 reported, but this installation is the most he’s ever made at one time.

He wrote a victim’s name on every cross, and he brought Stars of David for Jewish victims.

“This row of crosses will show the severity of what really happened there, more so than numbers and pictures in the paper,” he told TV station.

Facebook has said ads bought by Russian operatives reached 10 million of its users.

But does that include everyone reached by the information operation? Couldn’t the Russians also have created simple — and free — Facebook posts and hoped they went viral? And if so, how many times were these messages seen by Facebook’s massive user base?

The answers to those questions, which social media analyst Jonathan Albright studied for a research document he posted online Thursday, are: No. Yes. And hundreds of millions — perhaps many billions — of times.

“The primary push to influence wasn’t necessarily through paid advertising,” said Albright, research director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University. “The best way to to understand this from a strategic perspective is organic reach.”

I am sure your idea makes sense and would, in a sane world, satisfy the right to keep and bear arms while limiting mass murder. By itself, it would not stop the worst part of America’s gun fetish, which is the thousands of murders in ones and twos, domestic violence with guns, drunk people with guns, kids with guns, that is the true casualty count. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done.

It will, of course, never be done. This is because mass murder is part of the cult of human sacrifice that the Gun requires. Regular mass murder is needed, even desired, by Gun worshippers. Normal people, realising that their entertainment device had just been used in mass murder, would feel a sense of revulsion when looking at their toys, might even feel a sense of shame and, at a minimum, hide their deviant fetish for at least a while. Not in America - twisted as they are, they immediately double down on their murder worship, and make sure they are even more committed and prepared to sacrifice humans to their Gun. In a sane culture, these people would be shamed, and reviled by their friends and neighbours, called out in the press, and shunned. Here in America, however, we immediately glorify the capitalism of it, and applaud the improvement in gun shares. We write glowing pieces about gun sellers and how excited they are to get another run of sales.

Gun control, such as it is, cannot come through the courts or the government. Even if there was political will, which there is not, it would never work, because the problem is the American people themselves. As a whole, America likes things the way they are. They like mass shootings. They like the idea of a dangerous world where citizens shoot each other. Sure, some of us don’t. But as a whole, America looks at murdered children and people executed by snipers as they go about their day and concertgoers slaughtered and considers it normal and acceptable. Because the most important thing is the Gun. And if there isn’t regular slaughter, daily murder and death, perhaps the Gun might feel unwanted and unneeded. And America cannot abide that.

But not even [Randall] Woodfin’s most optimistic boosters anticipated the resounding margin of his victory. With all but one polling place reporting, Woodfin defeated Bell 58 to 41 percent.

Nina Turner took a victory lap for her support by sending tweets or something. Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed him and recorded a robocall for his campaign.

Our local radio station (KURY) switches to an east coast satellite feed at 6 PM every evening. News is at the top of the hour for five minutes, regular commercials and station callouts throughout the hour and 70’s music the rest of the hour. The reason I am telling you about this special station is that a few ago I listened to The Grand Illusion (Styx) and it was all of 1:08 long. Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson) just wrapped up at 1: 43 long. The playback is skipping parts of the song, leaping a bit ahead at times. Since the hour is prerecorded, everything ends at about 40 minutes into the hour and leaves the last 20 minutes or so as dead air. Except commercials and station ID; they will pop up and startle me at times if it’s real quiet.

The skipping does make for some interesting lyrics…lol!

Echoing a sentiment circulating around conservative media, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway pointed out on “Fox & Friends” on Thursday that in 2010, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms decided against classifying the weapons as automatic. In 2010, the Texas-based company Slide Fire petitioned the ATF to allow the bump-stocks to exist.

“This is a device that Obama’s ATF decided would not be regulated in 2010 and I think that’s an important part of this conversation,” she said.

It’s a weird emotion having had normal contacts with ATF agents, found then too be very serious men, very serious about strict enforcement of licensed sellers and traveling shooting exhibition teams. I think foreign visitors should be required to buy temporary health insurance when they visit the US. You can’t assume you’re not going to get shot while visiting here any more.

Travel insurance policies include this as an option. It needs to be mandatory for visitors coming to the US.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

I’m seeing that Trump’s trying to hide the stats showing his administration’s failures in Puerto Rico on the FEMA site. They got rid of statistics that would show that they’re failing, while keep a few that show progress being made.

It’s entirely in line with Trump’s worldview. He wants to only see the stuff that agrees with him, while claiming everything else is bogus. This is a man who is severely damaged/broken who doesn’t get basic human emotions, like empathy and compassion. Then again, neither does the GOP so there’s perhaps something else going on as well.

Meanwhile, all the talk about Tillerson being on the way out should be a reminder to everyone that Trump can rearrange deck chairs on the Trumptanic, but no one has replaced Kelly at DHS. That position has now been open for 2 months and no one is minding the store.

That directly affects national security.

That directly affects disaster response since FEMA reports to DHS. There’s undersecretary positions that are vacant as well. Again, this undermines national security and puts the nation at risk.

Trump simply doesn’t give a shit to fill those positions.

The GOP is more than content to rubber stamp his extremist judicial picks though all while the GOP in Congress use Trump’s shitstorm to try and destroy the safety net of Medicare and Medicaid all so that it can “pay” for the massive tax scheme giveaway to millionaires like Trump.

Trump could fill Sec. State with Pompeo at CIA, but then that leaves CIA empty.

This is worse than rearranging deck chairs.

This is about Trump systematically destroying the functioning government through actions/incompetence and the so called security hawks at the GOP don’t give a shit to stand up and demand Trump fill these key positions.

Same thing with all the so called constitutional conservatives. All the originalists, etc. It’s all just bullshit branding to cover for their regressive agenda to destroy the power of the federal govt and the safety net, while undermining civil and voting rights for all Americans.

I’m seeing that Trump’s trying to hide the stats showing his administration’s failures in Puerto Rico on the FEMA site. They got rid of statistics that would show that they’re failing, while keep a few that show progress being made.

It’s entirely in line with Trump’s worldview. He wants to only see the stuff that agrees with him, while claiming everything else is bogus. This is a man who is severely damaged/broken who doesn’t get basic human emotions, like empathy and compassion. Then again, neither does the GOP so there’s perhaps something else going on as well.

Meanwhile, all the talk about Tillerson being on the way out should be a reminder to everyone that Trump can rearrange deck chairs on the Trumptanic, but no one has replaced Kelly at DHS. That position has now been open for 2 months and no one is minding the store.

That directly affects national security.

That directly affects disaster response since FEMA reports to DHS. There’s undersecretary positions that are vacant as well. Again, this undermines national security and puts the nation at risk.

Trump simply doesn’t give a shit to fill those positions.

The GOP is more than content to rubber stamp his extremist judicial picks though all while the GOP in Congress use Trump’s shitstorm to try and destroy the safety net of Medicare and Medicaid all so that it can “pay” for the massive tax scheme giveaway to millionaires like Trump.

Trump could fill Sec. State with Pompeo at CIA, but then that leaves CIA empty.

This is worse than rearranging deck chairs.

This is about Trump systematically destroying the functioning government through actions/incompetence and the so called security hawks at the GOP don’t give a shit to stand up and demand Trump fill these key positions.

Same thing with all the so called constitutional conservatives. All the originalists, etc. It’s all just bullshit branding to cover for their regressive agenda to destroy the power of the federal govt and the safety net, while undermining civil and voting rights for all Americans.

Even the positions he’s filled and haven’t felt the need to have continual turnaround on, those people were appointed almost expressly to undermine their respective departments. Dept. of Education headed by someone who resents the idea of public education from the get-go. EPA headed by someone openly in bed with energy industry big-wigs and has gone out of his way to hide their malfeasance. A Dept. of Justice ran by the fucking keebler elf who has outright turned it into the ‘Department of Just Us’.

This is a government For Trump, By Trump, Of Trump, and the GOP is along for the ride to fulfill their greatest dream of dismantling the gov’t wholesale. And there seems to be precious fucking little we can do about it before the damage is almost irreversable.

Yeah, I found out I was 99.40 percent white (63 percent British/Irish, 36 percent German/French). That was a surprise, given the family legendarium. For 23andme, you can select to see if you have any genetic relatives. My closest genetic relative has my father’s last name, and the second closest has my mother’s maiden name. So I am generally assuming it’s correct.

I was one of first participants in the Nat Geo Genographics project, and since then I’ve had other tests done on my Y-DNA and mtDNA.

Short version: Y-DNA places my paternal ancestors in Devonshire or Wales. I’m part of the largest haplogroup in Europe (R-M269) en.wikipedia.org, with further refinement in the L21 subclade. So, I’m quite likely Celtic, but not Irish.

The mtDNA haplogroup is U3, with a likely origin in the Caucasus region. en.wikipedia.org My mom’s maternal ancestors hailed from Gotland, so it’s likely they originally came from the continent long ago, and not from mainland Scandinavia. Interestingly, the U3 haplogroup is common among the Roma, and it’s a family legend that my mom’s family had Gypsy blood in it.

Okay some brief bits on my Ancestry DNA results. I’m 44% Eastern European- makes sense my mom’s a grandchild of Eastern European immigrants but where things get kind of interesting is I have a higher percentage of Scandinavian than Western European despite being a quarter German and no roots in Scandinavia as I know it. I also have about 20% Irish and Great Britain which makes sense since I have Gaelic Irish, Norman Irish, and possibly Anglo Irish roots. Trace amounts of Iberian and Greek/Italian as well.

Could one of the big reasons some younger folks have no sense of community, citizenship and lack empathy is because they have spent too much time alone? Maybe we have a group of people that have been too into digital communications, digital pastime, games, etc., and haven’t had enough dealing with people in groups in real live situations.

Actual communications amongst a group of people right there with you, in school, play groups, activities and the like teaches so much more of those missing traits than being online in communities.

Things as simple as playing games and one of your friends falls down and cuts a knee or bloodies a nose is a great teacher or empathy.

Also, when you are dealing and interacting with people right there with you you are less prone to saying stupid stuff, acting out how tough you are, calling people names, etc.

Just a thought.

Interesting theory. Never thought about it that way. It’s tough because there are a lot of young people who embrace that world view and a lot reject it too. A lot of these guys do seem to be loners though.

I’d recommend WhatsApp, which uses your cellphone number as an identifier. Kik is also popular, but I’ve never used it. WhatsApp encrypts messages at both ends, so theoretically no one can intercept your texts and read them.

I feel like there’s some serious chicken-and-egg issue here. Do they lack a sense of community because they spend time alone, or do they tend to be loners since they already lack a sense of community? Do they lack communication skills because they spend time online, or do they turn to online communities precisely because they already have issues interacting in real life?

I feel like there’s a bit of Column A/Column B on both ends here, and it kind of self-feeds into those issues. And in some ways, these wouldn’t be so bad of a problem if there weren’t extroverts that also used online as either a means of bullying (as we’ve seen in trademark cases of cyberbullying where people who feed into harassment in real life tend to follow up with more online, rather than online bullying translating into real life bullying after the fact), or those exploiting those they know to be disaffected and vulnerable and turning them toward undesirables. And far as that goes, I have to point to Fox News as sort of a bellwether for the same thing. We’ve seen and heard the ‘brainwashed’ sort of complaints from family members who have had relatives become slavish Fox News parrots in their own ways and shift in both politics and personality.

Honestly, the online thing feels a lot like a new medium being used for the same old propaganda and exploitation, rather than some new phenomenon. It’s just more apparent since it’s visible in real time, and the effects are that much more accelerated because of that.

I’m half introvert, half extrovert when it comes down to it. I do like helping people hence why I like my job but I like being alone too. The thing is for me I don’t really see myself as “white”, I see myself as an unique mutt part of this unique country of immigrants. The world is actually a safer place for kids today than it was when most of us were growing up but any time something horrific happens anywhere in the country you hear about it non stop. Me and my brothers used to go out and ride our bikes(without helmets even) sometimes miles from home as long as we made it back before it got dark. No cell phones either so our parents mostly just trusted us. It’s a miracle entire generations didn’t just die in an alley somewhere…

I’m looking at Trillian’s network some. I’m not a fan of tying it to my cell number. (I have used WhatsApp, but I’m really looking for a desktop based client since that’s how we use them.)

My family came late to the whole “texting” thing but it’s pretty common to leave a message via IM or have short conversations that way. Ideally NOT phone based because sometimes it is a “please leave me a reminder on IM to do X when I sit back down at the computer.”

From the lofty intellectual side of the Right, we had Harold Bloom, arguing for a mostly European and American “canon” of literature en.wikipedia.org, and Allan Bloom’s The Closing of the American Mind, which argued against post-modernism and relativism and for a more traditional (i.e., European Christian) mode of ethics and morals.

Interestingly, the two Blooms are not related.

There were a whole series of similar books that were published from the 1970s to the 1990s, all from intellectuals decrying moral relativism, pop culture, and most notably, the introduction of “non-canon” works in high school and university, such as novels by women (who were not named Austen or Brontë), and minorities, and 20th century novels that were more racy than the usual traditional fare. The arguments were essentially the same as the two Blooms — that all this “extraneous” learning detracted from the study of the core aspects of (white) Western Civilization. The subtext was Western Civ was inherently superior to all others, so fuck those others.

We had to read one of those books (maybe it was William Bennett’s) when I was a high school teacher as part of our faculty summer reading assignment. I remember getting so angry at times that I wanted to hurl the book into the nearest trash bin.

From the lofty intellectual side of the Right, we had Harold Bloom, arguing for a mostly European and American “canon” of literature en.wikipedia.org, and Allan Bloom’s The Closing of the American Mind, which argued against post-modernism and relativism and for a more traditional (i.e., European Christian) mode of ethics and morals.

Interestingly, the two Blooms are not related.

There were a whole series of similar books that were published from the 1970s to the 1990s, all from intellectuals decrying moral relativism, pop culture, and most notably, the introduction of “non-canon” works in high school and university, such as novels by women (who were not named Austen or Brontë), and minorities, and 20th century novels that were more racy than the usual traditional fare. The arguments were essentially the same as the two Blooms — that all this “extraneous” learning detracted from the study of the core aspects of (white) Western Civilization. The subtext was Western Civ was inherently superior to all others, so fuck those others.

We had to read one of those books (maybe it was William Bennett’s) when I was a high school teacher as part of our faculty summer reading assignment. I remember getting so angry at times that I wanted to hurl the book into the nearest trash bin.

Come to think of it, we were exposed to a lot of writers of non European origin. Zora Neale Hurston, Sandra Cisneros, Maya Angelou, Amy Tan. Never bothered me because hey I had black, Asian, and Latino classmates and stories from writers of their cultures mattered too.

Kids don’t run around their neighborhoods anymore. After school, weekends, on holidays, their time is spent in a child care setting or participating in supervised activities.

Parent’s no longer trust their kids are safe outside without supervision.

Which I don’t think is a good thing either. It sort of makes the kids suspicious of others. And that can lead to mistrust and hate of those others.

Many child psychologist and behaviorists say that kids learn all their fears from their parents.

All I know is, I lived outdoors with all my neighborhood friends. We learned a lot about each other that way.

And as I have said, I grew up in a mixed neighborhood with Black kids, older Europeans that were immigrants and had broken language, people of all kids of economic backgrounds etc. It was a mixed bag and I believe it taught me a lot of real world things about people.

This is largely the media’s fault. The world is actually a safer place for kids today than it was when most of us were growing up but any time something horrific happens anywhere in the country you hear about it non stop. Me and my brothers used to go out and ride our bikes(without helmets even) sometimes miles from home as long as we made it back before it got dark. No cell phones either so our parents mostly just trusted us. It’s a miracle entire generations didn’t just die in an alley somewhere…

My parents never had any worries about me and my friends heading into NYC when I was a teenager, despite all the alarming crime wave stories of 1970s NYC, because they used to live in NYC. You just learn how to be careful and stay out of trouble. Deep down, I guess they understood news stories only focus on the bizarre and the awful, because “nothing happened today” doesn’t sell newspapers.

Years later, I had to patiently explain to a well meaning, but alarmist friend that we were not putting our children in jeopardy by moving to South Africa for a year. She had the notion that carjackings were so common that owners (all owners, she claimed) now had flamethrowers mounted on their cars. She was ready to call CPS out on us, but mutual friends were able to dissuade her of that.

Here in the NYC metro area, the NYPD keeps weekly stats on these things, and compares the current year to the past year, and then back to 2001, 1998, 1998, 1993, and 1990.

Murder has dropped from 2,263 in 1990 to 335 last year. That’s going from having nearly 7 murders a day to less than 1 even as population has increased.

My high school was fairly progressive. In English classes, we read Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49, Piri Thomas’ Down These Mean Streets, Ellison’s Invisible Man, Mary Stewart’s The Crystal Cave, and Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Dispossessed, along with Shakespeare, Twain, Crane, and other traditional fare.

I learned something from each of them, because I had very good teachers who helped us understand them. And they encouraged us to read other works by the same authors, no matter the content.

i can’t relate to the RW educational model of only teaching white male literature, with a begrudging acknowledgement of Austen and the Brontës. It’s depriving students of a much larger, richer world of literature.

Of course, that’s probably the intent.

The British docuseries Hitler’s Bodyguard has an episode specifically on Rohm, his crew, and the Night of the Long Knives. Hitler and pretty much everyone in his senior staff knew Rohm was gay for years and that he surrounded himself with other gay Nazis as his personal staff, but Hitler tolerated it, despite his personal aversion to homosexuality, because Rohm was an early SA member and because Rohm had been a “hard man” in loyal service to him all that time.

The main reason for the Night of the Long Knives (and why Rohm had to be eliminated) was because Himmler wanted to neuter the SA in favor of his SS; he and Goering planned the whole thing out, down to how they would split the spoils.

At its heart, the Night of the Long Knives wasn’t really about purging Rohm and other gays from the Nazi party (though that was a convenient side effect, one that would have wider significance till the end of the war), it was a good, old-fashioned authoritarian power struggle: Himmler and Goering were the winners, Rohm was the loser.

I’m now seeing people complaining that calling Trump a “moron” is insulting to people with learning disabilities. I just can’t understand the logic of this argument. If you follow it to its conclusion, it means you can never criticize someone for doing something stupid, because people with learning disabilities might think you’re also talking about… them? How does this make any sense?

If I say Trump is an idiot, I’m talking about Trump, not anyone else. The idea that people I’m not criticizing might have their feelings hurt when I criticize someone else just doesn’t compute for me.

progressives should be aware that any effective line of attack or defense against wingnuttia will be expropriated by them - to the best of their limited ability, but sometimes very effectively.

hence, complaints by democrats about the bogus stories about birth certificates and fema camps, and the stories planted by russian agents and tricksters, calling them ‘fake news’, were taken up by wingnuts who turned the meaning of the phrase ‘fake news’ on its head and effectively covered up its original meaning

trump has burned 1/2 the equivalent of the annual NEA budget on golfing:
you know the NEA - the one trump wants to defund.

we, the taxpayers have spent more than $72 million on trump’s golfing. Every outing was to a club he owns, so most of that money is probably funneling to him personally.

From the LA Times back in May 2017,
