Just paged the latest analysis from the Serious Intellectual Thinkers at the DCCC. They’re going to work to ensure that the GOP nominates the most batshit crazy, fucked-up candidates in next year’s primaries, in the hopes that the GOP base will then choose a Democrat, because that will be the only “reasonable and sane” choice.

Problem: “You always have to watch closely what’s going on on the other side. But you cannot force a fumble in these situations,” warned party strategist Matt Canter, a senior staffer at the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm in 2012, when McCaskill defeated Akin. “Unfortunately, the goal posts have moved on what’s considered sane and reasonable now.”

So. Rather than actually, you know, WORK on coming up with a coherent, marketable alternative to RWNJs, the DCCC’s master plan for comeback is to encourage the very worst the GOP has to offer?

Fuck me. How much is a house in New Zealand again?

No, the base of D’Felon’s tweet-in-question (“Hitler was NOT anti-gay. He refused to purge gay Brownshirts from Nazi ranks saying he had no problem as long as they were good fighters”) was not completely off-base; please see my post about Rohm from downstairs:

The British docuseries Hitler’s Bodyguard has an episode specifically on Rohm, his crew, and the Night of the Long Knives. Hitler and pretty much everyone in his senior staff knew Rohm was gay for years and that he surrounded himself with other gay Nazis as his personal staff, but Hitler tolerated it, despite his personal aversion to homosexuality, because Rohm was an early SA member and because Rohm had been a “hard man” in loyal service to him all that time.

The main reason for the Night of the Long Knives (and why Rohm had to be eliminated) was because Himmler wanted to neuter the SA in favor of his SS; he and Goering planned the whole thing out, down to how they would split the spoils.

At its heart, the Night of the Long Knives wasn’t really about purging Rohm and other gays from the Nazi party (though that was a convenient side effect, one that would have wider significance till the end of the war), it was a good, old-fashioned authoritarian power struggle: Himmler and Goering were the winners, Rohm was the loser.

Now, whatever insinuations D’Felon is trying to make about the “Pink Swastika” is very wrong and full of self-serving shit.

I think Charles highlighted them a time or two. There was this sweet movie from 2013 with some great actors, and the theme was catchy, and would creep up in my mind from time to time. It clicked a time back. Yep. The Way Way Back
And the tune? That crawled through my mind forever?

I definitely wasn’t disputing that; that’s what D’Felon got wrong/was twisting for his own ends. Hitler did, however, treat Rohm differently, exactly because he was a loyal, tough street fighter for him since the early “struggles” of the 20s, because he knew Rohm well; I do agree with you that doesn’t negate Hitler’s aversion to gays and what the Reich did to them, not at all.

re: #7 Belafon

His statement strikes me as the same as saying Hitler had one Jewish friend, so he couldn’t have been anti-Semitic.

Funny you should say that:

Emil Maurice (19 January 1897, Westermoor - 6 February 1972, Munich) was an early member of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party) and a founding member of the Schutzstaffel (SS). Together with Erich Kempka, he served as one of Hitler’s personal chauffeurs. Unusually, he was one of the few Mischlinge, (a person of mixed Jewish and ethnic German ancestry), to serve in the SS.[1]

en.wikipedia.org

Maurice was close enough to Hitler (after Hitler, he was SS member #2; Himmler was #168), he even competed with Hitler for the affections of Hitler’s niece Geli Raubal; that’s what got him removed as Hitler’s chauffeur in 1927 and blunted his rise into the higher echelon of the SS and the Nazi party. However, that long-standing personal relationship with Hitler, strained as it had been over Raubal, was still what ended up saving Maurice and his brothers from the camps (or outright execution) for having Jewish blood.

After Himmler had become Reichsführer-SS, Maurice fell afoul of Himmler’s racial purity rules for SS officers when he had to submit details of his family history before he was allowed to marry in 1935. Himmler stated, “without question…Maurice is, according to his ancestral table, not of Aryan descent”.[13] All SS officers had to prove racial purity back to 1750, and it turned out that Maurice had Jewish ancestry: Charles Maurice Schwartzenberger (1805-1896), the founder of the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, was his great-grandfather.

Even though Maurice had been a party member since 1919, taken part in the abortive Beer Hall Putsch, for which he was awarded the prestigious Blood Order, and been a bodyguard for Hitler, Himmler considered him to be a serious security risk given his “Jewish ancestry”.[3][15] Himmler recommended that Maurice be expelled from the SS, along with other members of his family. To Himmler’s annoyance, Hitler stood by his old friend.[13] In a secret letter written on 31 August 1935, Hitler compelled Himmler to make an exception for Maurice and his brothers, who were informally declared “Honorary Aryans” and allowed to stay in the SS.[16]

Before they got married, he was talked about as “my Black boyfriend” so I don’t see that he would be bothered to an “upgrade”. Milo’s treatment of Leslie Jones shows that he is anti-Black and is a-ok with anti-Black harassment/racism when he encouraged his supporters to attack her tweets. I don’t know why any Black person would associate with him.

I don’t know why any PERSON would associate with him. After reading the Buzzfeed article from yesterday, he seems like a far more odious POS than I’d previously though, and I already thought he was a REALLY odious POS.

re: #77 Decatur Deb

Do you know who else persecuted gay people? It was the times and the manners.

1919
Magnus Hirschfeld founds the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, a sexology research center, in Germany.
February - an investigation into reports of homosexual activity among sailors in Newport, Rhode Island results in a series of arrests, courts-martial and civilian criminal trials. Details of sailors ordered to act as sexual decoys led to political embarrassment for then-Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt.

en.wikipedia.org

Minor point: in 1920 FDR was only Assistant Sec’y of the Navy: and, as I read in a bio once, had gotten handed the Newport “homosexual ring” investigation mainly because it WAS expected to be an embarrassment: and in which Roosevelt didn’t much help himself. IIRC, he delegated the on-site investigation to an ex-NYC detective type: whose method of “uncovering” gays on base was to send in swarms of agents, who started propositioning personnel left and right: without informing the Newport base officials. They, of course, went ballistic and started bombarding Roosevelt with forwarded complaints about even more sailors being sexually importuned by strange men: not the most sterling moment in the future President’s career….

This isn’t just an academic problem, either — Google penalizes sites that have tons of spam pages, and your Adsense account can even be shut down because of it. This is utterly depraved but we are so used to it almost nobody notices anymore. OF COURSE they will openly try to profit from mass murder. Candi’s artlessly open grin is the most offensive part.

It’s oddly appropriate that reactions from a previous shooting be applied to the shooting du jour. After all, nothing changes.

Even now, a spike in gun sales due to the Las Vegas shooting is making its way through the system, eventually to show up in quarterly earnings of gun makers, and thence to the larger stock market. Once there, it will give a little blip to the accounts of 401k participants who are in plans that do not specifically exclude investments in merchants of death.

Earlier this week there was some criticism of him being too cynical that kinda caught a little momentum. I can get that reading his stuff might get heavy. You should balance it out with other works if it starts to take a toll. I have to do that with a lot of things.

There’s also an undercurrent of haters who can’t stand that he doesn’t have a degree and he’s not ashamed in the least. I love that about him!

After years of Harry Reid as Senate Dem Leader, anyone might seem a comedown: but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the good job old Chuck has done so far: given the crappy hand the elections dealt him.

Maybe it’s that aura of “New York” - Schumer’s down-home* airs and Brooklyn accent that puts The Yam at ease: but when it comes to legislating, I get the impression that Trump and Schumer could appear at a presser, Chuck could stab him in the back right on camera, and Trump would just go back to the Oval Office and bitch to Gen. Kelly about finding out where the hell that annoying knife came from….

or “haimish” to be precise….

HappyWarrior  Oct 6, 2017 • 6:41:34pm

Coates to me seems to be asking what I ask myself often- What do I find more deplorable, the GOP base that votes for hate time and time again or the GOP establishment that panders to it. No doubt you all have seen or at least know about Gillespie’s MS-13 ad. Virginia has had El Salvadorian immigrants for as long as I can remember. We have a large El Salvadorian-American community here in NoVa and I had many El Saldavorian-Americans as classmates and friends over the years. MS-13 is a problem but Gillespie is being dishonest.

Anyone can be an educated person if they put in the work — having a degree is merely a common way to structure that work.

I had a conversation with my parents at dinner about the kneeling at football games. They hadn’t read my facebook post, but I don’t think it would have added much. There’s just enough racism in them that nothing I really say is going to completely get through. Mom’s worked at a number of jails, so, as she put it “I’ve seen those people, you haven’t.” When you bring up the videos of the shit cops do, she says “but you’re not seeing all of the video,” even if I bring up those that show the police planting evidence. Like I said, racism. And this is from my mom who rants about injustices women deal with.

What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is not all racism comes in the hood wearing kind or the swastika wearing kind. I hate saying it but my late grandfather definitely had some anti-black prejudice about him. He wasn’t the kind of man that would shout the n-word at black people or call a grown man “boy” but I definitely remember before he died during Obama’s rise that he was skeptical of Obama and I definitely saw it was because of Obama’s race. My grandmother too but she later overcame that and she’s come to like the Obamas quite a bit. I like to think had he not died Grandpa would have done the same but I don’t know.
