Video: Trump Is Compared to Harvey Weinstein, Says He Was Different: “That Was Locker Room”

Politics • Views: 34,128

YouTube

The entire right wing has been desperately trying to attach Harvey Weinstein to the left, because that’s what they do, ignoring the fact that the entire right wing voted for and supports a president who openly boasted — numerous times — about committing sexual assault.

Now Trump is trying to play it like he knew about Weinstein all along. In this clip the Trump-thing begins by saying, “I’ve known Harvey Weinstein for a long time, I’m not at all surprised.”

Then, when a reporter asks him about his infamous comments boasting about grabbing women “by the pussy,” he brushes it off with: “That’s locker room. That’s locker room. Yeah.” Then ignores the reporter.

Strange, though; when this photo was taken recently, Trump didn’t seem at all concerned about Harvey Weinstein’s reported sexual harassment.

2. That’s not how men in a locker room talk, according to men who spend a lot of time in locker rooms.

Everything is okay when their guys do it. Workplace violations. Rude or abusive to women. And gun violations. All good for the white guys, unless shown to be evil libs. No need to clip in Chris Rock right? We all know the deal, “if he’s white, it’s alright”.

How Pence and Trump get away with completely mal-defining BLM, taking a knee and an American territory is just inexplicable.

I was just in a men’s locker room a few days ago, and I overheard several different guys discuss how they got away with sexual assault.

Just kidding, of course. I have been visiting locker rooms regularly for more than 35 years and I have never once heard a single conversation even remotely like this.

It’s how boys in junior high locker rooms talk. What makes that okay among some is another indicator.

This is fine:

Computer virus hits US Predator and Reaper drone fleet (Goes to Ars Technica, more at the link):

A computer virus has infected the cockpits of America’s Predator and Reaper drones, logging pilots’ every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other war zones.

The virus, first detected nearly two weeks ago by the military’s Host-Based Security System, has not prevented pilots at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada from flying their missions overseas. Nor have there been any confirmed incidents of classified information being lost or sent to an outside source. But the virus has resisted multiple efforts to remove it from Creech’s computers, network security specialists say. And the infection underscores the ongoing security risks in what has become the US military’s most important weapons system.

“We keep wiping it off, and it keeps coming back,” says a source familiar with the network infection, one of three that told Danger Room about the virus. “We think it’s benign. But we just don’t know.”

Apologies in advance for quoting Chris Cilizza, but here goes:

“Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker suggested Wednesday that Gens. John Kelly and James Mattis, as well as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson are the “people that help separate our country from chaos,” a stinging criticism of President Donald Trump from a man once considered an ally in Washington.

Asked directly by a reporter whether he was referring to Trump in using the word “chaos,” Corker, who announced last month he would retire in 2018, responded: “(Mattis, Kelly and Tillerson) work very well together to make sure the policies we put forth around the world are sound and coherent. There are other people within the administration that don’t. I hope they stay because they’re valuable to the national security of our nation.”

Stop for a second and re-read that last paragraph. The sitting Republican chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee is suggesting that if Tillerson was removed from office (or quit), the national security of the country would potentially be in danger. And he’s refusing to knock down — and thereby affirming — the idea that Trump is an agent of chaos who pushes policies that are not always “sound” or “coherent.”“

I predicted a couple days ago on a listserv that right-wingers would start calling for Muslim control instead of anything on guns, to distract from killings.

The NRA is using a similar distraction by appearing to be reasonable on bump stocks, by arguing they are accessories so they don’t necessarily have a problem with their regulation or banning (get them to say that about drum magazines though). About the only way you can kill someone with a bump stock is if you club them over the head with it.

The problem isn’t the stock, it’s what that stock is attached to (and that the overwhelming majority of killings are with pistols, not rifles.)

There have been eight mass shootings since that in Las Vegas (nine if you count the one in Lawrence the same day):

Meanwhile the administration is so desperate to mobilize and rally support that they’ll pick any subject or issue no matter how important or productive. Much as Josh Marshall tweeted this AM.

I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but I’m finding the “Las Vegas Wasn’t America’s Largest Mass Killing” annoying. I mean, I understand that we as a nation did horrible things in the past and I’ve repeatedly said as much. But this really feels like self-distraction by the left. I’m tempted to respond with, “Oh, yeah, that’s right! Well, I won’t feel so bad about this one, then.”

I hear “The largest _________” about every atrocity in which a gun is involved.

I don’t even pay attention anymore.

I sure am not going to give Harvey Weinstein any cover or okay anything he did.

But it is amazing to me how America has seemingly never heard of the “casting couch” since it has been part of the sleazy side of Hollywood since there were movie producers and starlets.

No different than the couch in Roger Ailes office. Where do you think he got that power play from anyway?

This reminds me - a question for photographers: Souza’s photography is distinctly superior to whoever is taking Trump pictures. Is it the subject, photographer, or both?

Some of the power of Souza’s photography comes from the emotional power of the images. Trump is just putting on a show, so photos of Trump performing are emotionally empty.

Yup, and if you bring up suicide with a gun, you’ll get something like “well, they would have killed themselves some other way, with (drugs) (razor) (rope) (jump in front of a train) &c.”

All those things exist now, and are not used much. (Plus drugs that can kill you outright are pretty heavily regulated.) Costs nothing to jump in front of a train, but hardly anyone does it.

Oh yeah, guns are easy and conservatives are interested in deflection, not mental health.

We did have several high school kids kill themselves by stepping in front of trains over the last few years. They were nearly all from the same school.
Suicide is an odd thing, in that it is often impulsive and influenced by popular culture. I believe a high percentage of people who make a serious, but unsuccessful suicide attempt do not go on to kill themselves.

Social factors, such as the incidence of discrimination and bullying at a school, explain 55 percent of suicidal thoughts. That’s compared with 20 percent that is explained by a student’s individual characteristics, like gender and experiences of victimization.

“Social Factors” “Popular Culture” “Social Media” — I guess the terms should be better defined.

Teenage Suicide seems to be a result of direct influences, not so much “culture”.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Can’t go a weekend without having Trump bullshit rain down.

What is it? Did mommy not love him? Did daddy treat him like shit growing up and indoctrinated him on being an asshole and bigot?

Nazis marched in Charlottesville and Trump and Pence are silent.

But NFL players again took a knee to protest racial discrimination and bigotry against minorities.

That gets both Pence and Trump to caterwaul.

These aren’t leaders. They’re demagogues and pushing an extremist agenda that the white supremacists and Nazis approve of.

Trump can’t and wont give a stronger denunciation to the Nazis and white supremacists than he does to the Mayor of San Juan or NFL players who protest.

It’s not in him.

He’s a bigot.

Strunk and White held forth on the subject of sentence-ending prepositions, noting that they had a long storied use in English-language literature.

The 4th edition of Strunk & White has “Not only is the preposition acceptable at the end [of the sentence], sometimes it is more effective in that spot than anywhere else.” (p. 77 of the hardcover edition).

Four Dickens sentences ending in prepositions:

Marley was dead: to begin with.

Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge’s name was good upon ‘Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to.

But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for.

The mention of Marley’s funeral brings me back to the point I started from.

The same goes for split infinitives.

So.

I commented on Twitter about that a while ago. Most of Trump’s photos are grip-and-grins, or line-ups with MoronDon in the middle and everyone standing stiffly, like a posed photo at a wedding. No imagination. No spontaneity.

Mrs. Bennet had many grievances to relate, and much to complain of. [Jane Austen]

The domestic man, who loves no music so well as his kitchen clock and the airs which the logs sing to him as they burn on the hearth, has solaces which others never dream of. [Ralph Waldo Emerson]

Then she remembered what she had been waiting for. [James Joyce]

Mr. Barsad saw losing cards in it that Sydney Carton knew nothing of. [Charles Dickens]

Finn the Red-Handed had stolen a skillet and a quantity of half-cured leaf tobacco, and had also brought a few corn-cobs to make pipes with. [Mark Twain]

There was a little money left, but to Mrs. Bart it seemed worse than nothing”“the mere mockery of what she was entitled to. [Edith Wharton]

grammarist.com (more at the link, including other quotes):

The “rule” that a preposition should not end a sentence goes back to the 18th century, when some grammarians believed English should bend to the rules of Latin grammar. But like the spurious prohibition against starting sentences with conjunctions, this rule goes against the glorious flexibility of English and often leads to unnatural-sounding sentences.

Ending sentences with strong words is a good idea, but not when it means contorting the language away from natural expression.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn announced she would run for Sen. Corker’s seat right after he announced he would retire from the Senate. Does this mean Trump endorses her?

By default, I’m sure he does.

As a side note, I fully expect Blackburn (one of my Reps, though not of my district) to continue her grand tradition as Representative - AT&T, Comcast, and TruckNutz.

Strunk and White held forth on the subject of sentence-ending prepositions, noting that they had a long storied use in English-language literature.

Four Dickens sentences ending in prepositions:

I once read that the rule that sentences should not end in prepositions was an arbitrary decision by some writer of a grammar textbook, and somehow the admonition became canon law. In practice, forcing the preposition off the end makes the sentence seem stilted or pretentious.

Ditto the split infinitive: “to boldly go” sounds way better than “to go boldly”.

Great article—particularly this:

…when the top two elected leaders of our democracy decide that political speech - in this case, a silent and non-violent form of political speech - is unacceptable to the point of walking out of the game where it happens, well, that’s chilling. That’s the kind of oppressive nonsense our ancestors were leaving when they crossed the Atlantic Ocean hundreds of years ago.

and the last graph:

The Colts had no idea - none - that he would be leaving before kickoff. They were just the wall Pence was using to paint his political graffiti.

Yunno, a long time ago, we were invited to the wedding of some friends. Our two-year-old daughter started getting antsy about 20 minutes into the service, so rather than fight it, I took her outside to run around.

I recall there was a rather grumpy looking fellow sitting on a bench outside the church with his arms folded. I kinda wondered what he was doing there.

Found out later it was the bride’s father: he had driven up nearly two hours from Mannheim to NOT attend the wedding because he disliked the Church.

He and his wife also attended the reception, which I found to be a pleasant, relaxed, informal outdoor gathering. Seems that they both left in a huff because “it was not what they had expected”.

Guess they wanted table seating assignments and a series of speeches and all the standard affair.

Could not help but be reminded of them when I read about Pence and his visit to the game.

You’re from Oz (if I recall), so things are very different here from back home.

American mass media is not only the most powerful entity in the country, it is arguable that it is the country - mass media is the national consciousness and national culture all in one. The American people as a whole follow their media narrative without question. Trump is president because the American media, including supposedly ‘liberal’ outlets, decided that he would be promoted and Hillary Clinton attacked. Similarly, although relatively few Americans have heard about Harvey Weinstein before now, his name will be all over every network for the next several months, in order to make Democrats look bad and to normalise Trump. All outlets, including the ‘liberal ones’, will do this. If this were an election year, this would be the only thing talked about until the day of the election, so as to make Democrats look compromised. Weinstein will leave the news cycle when there is either another scandal that can be used to attack Democrats or liberals, or when there is another disaster, because fear of disasters and mass slaughter is also a strong media narrative.

It took me a while to really get to grips with how monolithic US media is, and how heavily invested it is in maintaining white male supremacy. Most of the US media were willing to do it more or less subtly until FOX decided to do it overtly and with an iron fist, and now the NYT and CNN are forced to become less subtle to keep up.

re: #271 Renaissance_Man

100% of the political media is different between the US and Australia - I understand that. It doesn’t stop my outrage at the way the US media treats the GOP compared to the democratic party. I am Barack Obama’s No 1 fan in Australia and was outraged for 8 years at the treatment he received in his own country while the rest of the world adored him. As for trump - his existence brings home the benefits of a Westminster style government. He would not have lasted as leader of a majority party in Australia/PM after his tape recorded remarks about women.

It probably should be added that the treatment of non-white immigrants and the ideas of white supremacists are not so different between the two countries. We are still at the stage of trying to hide things rather than bring them out into the open.

Recently, the NY Times Magazine printed a recipe for a green bean dish that you steam for three hours and it is totally kick ass. Give it a try. We’ve had it three times this week, and I’m not a big fan of green beans.

Ate at a BJ’s Restaurant/Taphouse. Good beer selection, and tried one of their pizzas (for which they’re supposedly known for). It’s deep dish, which I’m not a big fan of, but the veggie pie was quite fresh.

My big complaint - not enough sauce and cheese to keep the veggies in place.

Still, it was a functional and good savory torte.

/the only true pizza is thin crust pizza. Over this there is no debate. ////

Deep Dish frequently means All Dough. That’s called Pizza Bread.

I mean, one’s a car-only charger and never leaves the cigarette lighter. The one at work, I have permanently plugged in, and only the people on my shift know where its at…it’s not supposed to be there, but the other shifts will never find it…it would require them to notice something (ANYTHING).

Ok. Since people are sharing recipes, here’s a quick to prep dinner I just made.

It’s a vegetable stack w/cheese (for lack of a better description).

I had a bunch of Japanese eggplant, onions, and green peppers, so I sliced all up.

Threw all of them into the oven to roast - lightly coating everything with olive oil, and giving the eggplant a bit of balsamic vinegar to cook in.

I let cook until nearly golden brown. Removed from oven, and then began stacking the onion, eggplant, and pepper alternating with some mozzarella cheese. Threw the completed stacks back into the oven to melt/brown the cheese.

Once done, removed from oven and plated with a bit more balsamic vinegar splashed on top.

Nice thing about this is that we can use most any kind of vegetable that can be sliced thin, or you can add mushrooms too.

I’ll keep it on the back burner!

I don’t care if you leave it on the welcome mat, I want it now! ;-)

Dems fail to vet personal life of every donor.

Republicans fail to vet:
President
Vice President
Cabinet Members
White House Staff
Judiciary nominees
Department nominees/appointments
Media reps
President’s gross family

BUT BOTH SIDES DO IT!
