Genius at Work: Keith Jarrett Solo - “Over the Rainbow”

Music • Views: 34,503

YouTube

Keith Jarrett has recorded this classic song many times on many albums and each time it’s unique and different; but for me this is the best version, from his solo concert at La Scala, the famous opera house in Milan, Italy.

Personal note: I played there once with Al Jarreau; it’s an amazing theater that opened for the first time in 1778.

And here’s the songwriter himself, Yip Harburg, with his own rendition, including an intro I’ve never heard before.

Yip Harburg is also featured in Simon Shama’s “The Story of the Jews.” He is in episode four aptly titled, “Over the Rainbow.”

Trump subverts the US Constitution on a daily basis.

He’s undermining US national security almost daily.

But never let anything get in the way of a Trump round of golf. Or tweeting.

All the while, millions continue to go without power in Puerto Rico.

This tangerine toddler is twiddling his tiny thumbs while his political party is sabotaging functioning government and installing the worst of the worst in all corners of government - especially the judiciary.

One of the things that bugs me about the gun control argument I keep hearing from the right is that there is no law that would have prevented Vegas.

Probably true.

But they seem to forget there’s two parts to Law and Order. Deterrence and Prevention. Speeding is against the law. There are penalties. For a lot of people, they don’t speed because they don’t want to risk the penalty. For others, they are willing to take that risk so there’s police out there trying to detect people speeding and busting them from doing it — PREVENTING it from happening.

What gets me is, if I make a financial transaction of $10,000 or more, a SAR is filed (suspicious activity report) by the bank. It doesn’t stop me from doing it. It doesn’t mean I broke a law either. But it raises a flag that if it matches some pattern somewhere, it’s going to get looked at closer.

So why the hell can I go out and buy thousands of rounds of ammunition and not have any sort of suspicion raised? It doesn’t mean what I’m doing is illegal or should even be stopped. But the fact that Paddock was able to keep doing this for years and never was noticed?

Maybe that’s what we should be looking at.

Years ago I was in charge of coffee and donuts — the big time! — at a NYU symposium in celebration of Yip Harburg, during which the man himself held the stage for well over two hours, relating many great anecdotes about his life and times. No, related is too bland a word — he regaled the audience, and they reciprocated with love. My lasting impression was that he was a basically sweet yet very tough cookie. Pity the poor Broadway producer who dared to tangle with Yip.

People are way too bland these days. Mr. Yarburg was a character, in the very best sense of the word. And so creative!

Repeat from end of last thread (because I seem to always be running behind, or on empty or something)

Dems fail to vet personal life of every donor.

Republicans fail to vet:
President
Vice President
Cabinet Members
White House Staff
Judiciary nominees
Department nominees/appointments
Media reps
President’s gross family

BUT BOTH SIDES DO IT!

What a magnificent rendition of such a beautiful song. I’ve always like it when the artists perform it at a slower tempo than Garland sang in the movie. The chord progressions, when draw out, are simply exquisite. And the piano Jarrett is playing is a jewel. Thanks for sharing this. Mrs. Pence: I know you will never entirely comprehend this, Michael, but you must believe I did not know it would be you. I served them. I fought for them. I’m on the point of winning for them the greatest foothold they would ever have in this country. And they paid me back by taking your soul away from you. I told them to build me an assassin. I wanted a killer from a world filled with killers and they chose you because they thought it would bind me closer to them.
[Puts her hands on Pence’s face]
Mrs. Pence: But now, we have come almost to the end. One last step. And then when I take power, they will be pulled down and ground into dirt for what they did to you. And what they did in so contemptuously underestimating me.

The obnoxious stupidity of Trump does eventually wear people out, perhaps. His followers are not increasing in number, and every stunt eventually backfires on him, as idiotic things tend to do.

That’s why the hate-industry have to keep rolling out Hillary as an item - they need anything at all to somehow keep the marks, and Hillary-hate is the last thing that worked so they go back to it.

I have been there. Now my a1c floats between 6.1 and 6.3. Doctor has it checked every 3 months. When I was diagnosed with Type 2 my weight was right at 300 pounds. I am down to 215 right now. I go to the gym and work out every day for at least 30 minutes. Now if I get up in the morning and my wakeup blood sugar is over 130 then I do 45 minutes of work on the elliptical at the gym.

Also keep an eye on nutrition information labels. Keep an eye peeled for anything with high fructose corn syrup in it since that really spikes blood glucose. Eat lots of fiber and substitute Stevia for any other artificial sweetner! Stay away from anything white (rice, potatoes, white flour or table sugar).

Hope that helps encourage you!

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the age of 47. I struggled for years to lower my A1C level. What did it for me was changing my diet and cooking nearly every meal I eat. I’ve always been on the slender side, but I lost more weight. I weigh about 135 now, and I’m 5’8” tall. I used to weigh 158 lbs. The only time I’ve eaten in a restaurant this year was in June with my daughter to celebrate her birthday. My last A1C reading last month was 5.1. Since I overhauled my diet and began cooking most of my meals at home four years ago, the highest my A1C level has been was 7.1. It’s usually around 6.2. I’m proud of you for attaining a lower A1C level. Hang in there, it will continue to decrease. Keeping a food log helps me, too. If my after dinner blood-sugar reading is higher than 200, I note the foods I ate for dinner that day. I can’t explain it, but for some reason, a few potato chips will cause a significant increase in my evening blood-sugar level. Go figure.

Any snack food spikes my blood sugar—chips, pretzels, crackers or even “sugar-free” candy. That’s why I now avoid them and replaced them with nuts, Ry-Krisp and yogurt.

re: #96 majii

My wife was diagnosed three years ago with Type II diabetes when the local hospital held a flu shot clinic at the church in our village … they gave checks with a glucose meter and she said “why not?”

The nurse told her she wasn’t keeping her diabetes under control, and she responded “I didn’t know I had diabetes.”

Now three years later it is well-controlled, and she’s lost about eighty pounds. As an aside, she’s taken to making recipes from several “diabetic” cookbooks more interesting (without adding carbohydrates to the meals).

I supplement my meals with additional carbohydrate bombs like sandwiches and crackers (if I lost eighty pounds I would be under forty pounds).

OT: I just came back from raising the village flags to full-staff (half-staff today for National Fallen Firefighters’ Service).

In this year’s village budget, I got a bump (wearing my street superintendent hat) to the streetlamp budget to replace sodium vapour lamps that fail with new LED fixtures. (The argument was they save money over the long run as they fail less often, light the streets better, and use less electricity saving money on the village electric bill along with lower carbon emissions because of less electricity use). The increase in the budget was passed.

I’ve since called in a number of dead lamps to the public power district (they change lamps for us because we don’t have the capability). Gradually the streets are being lit up better. (Hopefully the savings on the village electric bill and replacing lamps every few months will add up to significant savings in the village budget. That will keep the angry pitchforks and torches away from my house, at least until my next letter to the newspaper… .)

There was an influential Democratic politician in New York named Generoso Pope who led the first major push to make it a national holiday. After Pope’s death, Pennsylvania Democratic leader Michael Musmano headed the drive. When Musmano was challenged by Pitt professors about earlier Norse explorations of America he led a massive protest against them.

Pope and Musmano are the key figures who led the movement that culminated in the 1970 act making Columbus Day a national holiday.

Wikipedia [citation needed] differs:

Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in autumn of 1905, and became a federal holiday in the United States in 1937, though people have celebrated Columbus’s voyage since the colonial period. In 1792, New York City and other U.S. cities celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate on the 400th anniversary of the event. During the anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These rituals took themes such as citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress.

I get why Columbus Day is a holiday in Spain (in Rota it is a massive multi-day party with an agricultural fair, street parades, &c, as he sailed from San Lucar de Barrameda just up the road from there, and much of Latin America).

I don’t get why it’s a holiday here. He didn’t “discover” North America. He was looking for India; he thought the world was smaller than it was. If Hispaniola wasn’t in the way of his voyage, his crew would have starved and another legend would have run round of people sailing off the edge of the Earth.

What does it say when a member of the RWNJ goes against the yam’s behavior??

He said on Sunday that he had made all those comments deliberately, aiming them at “an audience of one, plus those people who are closely working around with him, what I would call the good guys.” He was referring to Mr. Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the White House chief of staff, John F. “As long as there are people like that around him who are able to talk him down when he gets spun up, you know, calm him down and continue to work with him before a decision gets made, I think we’ll be fine,” he said.
