GOP Chair of Senate Foreign Relations Committee: Trump’s Reckless Threats Could Cause “World War III”

“He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation”
Politics • Views: 37,514

Will the GOP ever wake up and realize the danger Donald Trump poses to the security of the United States with his impulsive narcissistic behavior? Well, one prominent Republican seems to have finally reached that point: Bob Corker Says Trump’s Recklessness Threatens ‘World War III’.

WASHINGTON — Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the , charged in an interview on Sunday that President Trump was treating his office like “a reality show,” with reckless threats toward other countries that could set the nation “on the path to World War III.”

In an extraordinary rebuke of a president of his own party, Mr. Corker said he was alarmed about a president who acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something.”

“He concerns me,” Mr. Corker added. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”

I’m not impressed by Bob Corker’s come-to-Jesus moment portrayed in this New York Times piece. He and 99% of conservatives are still awful people who want to take this country back to the dark ages. Fuck ‘em. Fuck ‘em all.

An E-mail I just sent to my supposed never-Trump Senator Ben Sasse, on the topic of abortion (bold in original):

Your office’s E-mail concerning a bill to restrict abortion to twenty weeks contains a lie.

You claimed that a foetus is “pain-capable” at twenty weeks, and that is supported by scientific evidence.

That is a lie, and you know it’s a lie.

No medical or scientific organisation has ever claimed that. It is merely a way to smuggle your religious opinions into law by dressing it up as “science.” As a historian, you should be well aware of the dangers of manipulating falsehoods for a political agenda.

If you want to ban abortions after a particular time, then own your reasons to do so. But to lie about the scientific evidence only makes you morally bankrupt.

If you want to smuggle a religious position into secular law, then be honest, as your Bible tells you to (unless lying for your faith is what your religion teaches you).

You should be spending time as a Republican on fiscal conservatism and national security (such as securing our nation’s election system from Russian interference, removing a dangerous and incompetent and compromised president from office), not trying to shrink government so small it can fit in my wife’s uterus.

Do your job.

I think it’s already too late for us. Even if there was going to be another election untainted by Kris Kobach banning brown people from voting, even if Russian hacking wasn’t going to be entirely unopposed, even if we somehow managed to elect Democrats to Congress and the White House, the Republicans will never allow non-Republicans to take power again. The Republicans in the Senate know that Trump is a dangerous idiot, but they also know who butters their bread.

And is quite clear that there is a large enough contingent of the electorate who are very backwards in their view of the world and they don’t care what happens to the modern world, and probably even wish it would go away.

I’m not going with the “it’s too late so just give up and flee” line.

Even if I could afford to flee, and even if another country would take a disabled middle-age man, what use would that be? The USA is the most powerful economic and military force in the history of the world.

It’s stand in opposition now, or there won’t be any safe place.

The Women’s March, the Science March, the repeated overturning of local and state GOP seats to Democrats even in places like Oklahoma show that far from being defeated, opposition is ramping up.

Representative Don Bacon (R-NE2) introduced a bill entitled H.R. 3897, the Gold Star Family Support and Installation Access Act of 2017.

It was co-sponsored by four Democrats and four Republicans.

It seeks to change the way Gold Star Families are treated under the law. Currently, you get a lapel pin.

Should the bill pass, it would extend access to bases and installations for life, allow family members to continue to attend unit functions or receive grief counselling, access to base facilities, &c.

First, it requires Gold Star spouses and children to have lifetime access to installations and gives the Secretary of Defense the ability to authorize similar access to next of kin. The bill also provides installation access reciprocity between the military services.

Second, H.R. 3897 allows remarried Gold Star spouses to keep their benefits as long as dependent children remain at home.

The eight bipartisan cosponsors of H.R. 3897 are all veterans: Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA), Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL), Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ), Rep. Anthony Brown (D-MD), and Rep. Steve Russell (R-OK).

Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza’s ex-wife alleged in a letter sent this week to the federal court that heard his criminal case that D’Souza was abusive, that he lied in his defense against the criminal charges, and implied D’Souza had manipulated the couple’s daughter into making positive public statements about him.

In addition to addressing the illegal campaign contributions, Dixie accused D’Souza of physical abuse and suggested that he might have manipulated their daughter into making positive statements on his behalf.

“It is my husband who has an abusive nature,” she wrote. “In one instance, it was my husband who physically abused me in April 2012 when he, using purple belt karate skills, kicked me in the head and shoulder, knocking me to the ground and creating injuries that pain me to this day.”

“Dinesh lied to me, he lied to the government, he encouraged others to lie for him, and now he has allowed our daughter to submit multiple false statements to a federal court in order to avoid punishment,” she wrote. “Dinesh D’Souza is not a truthful person.”

Antifa Planning Communist Revolution for America on November 4

The communists in the Antifa crowd are planning to begin a revolution in America on Saturday, November 4 — almost exactly 100 years after the Bolshevik Revolution that took Russia out of the frying pan of Tsarist rule and into the fire of communist totalitarianism. While some see Antifa activists as the modern heroes of anti-Fascism — fighting against racism, sexism, and a litany of other “isms” — and others see them merely as the snowflake crowd of spoiled brats demanding free everything, the reality is that Antifa is one tool in the communists’ toolbox to bring America to her knees. And Saturday, November 4, 2017, is the day they have chosen for the opening salvo in the American Bolshevik Revolution.
On Tuesday morning, September 26, the Antifa group Refuse Fascism blocked rush-hour traffic on the 101 freeway for about a half an hour. Stretched out across the highway, holding signs spelling out, “NOV 4 IT BEGINS,” eight people chanted slogans such as “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist U.S.A.” and “Whose streets? Our streets!” Many others lined the areas above the freeway, holding banners demanding an end to the “Trump/Pence Regime” and shooting video of the blockade.

The NRA is back pedalling on their initial support of banning bump stocks already.

huffingtonpost.com

While the National Rifle Association has said it would support regulating bump stocks ― the device the Las Vegas shooter used to turn his semi-automatic firearms into automatic ones ― the gun lobby’s executive director said Sunday that a push in Congress to ban the gun accessory would be useless.

“We don’t believe that bans have ever worked on anything,” Chris Cox said on “Fox News Sunday.” “What we have said is very clear: If something transforms a semi-automatic to function like a fully automatic, then it should be regulated differently.”

Back to the argument of “if a ban doesn’t end all crime, then the ban is useless.” Murder bans or rape bans haven’t ended all instances of those crimes, so they are obviously useless. (And lots of bans have worked - bans on dangerous pharmaceuticals, bans on unsafe consumer products, &c.)

Mr. Cox is going for that tired argument again. The point of laws (whether a ban or restriction) is to punish anti-social behaviour. They give society a recourse when someone does something society deems unacceptable.

Court testimony exposes governor’s lies about Flint water crisis (Goes to World Socialist Website)

In a critical turn of events in a Flint courtroom, testimony given by Harvey Hollins, an appointee of Governor Rick Snyder, contradicted Snyder’s repeated claims that he did not learn of a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease until January 12, 2016.

On October 6, in Genesee County’s 67th District Court, Hollins stated he told Snyder about the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in December 2015. The Flint water crisis began three and a half years ago when the city’s water source was switched from the Detroit water system to the Flint River without adding corrosion controls, an act of negligence which allowed lead to leach from the pipes. Although health experts warned of the danger of Legionnaires’ disease and the possible link to the change in the city’s water source as early as October 2014, their efforts to investigate the situation were blocked by high-placed officials in state and federal agencies.

The issue of whether Snyder lied under oath before a US congressional hearing in March 2016, is a significant development. The matter arose during a preliminary hearing concerning the first of 13 officials facing criminal charges over the Flint catastrophe. The hearings are being held to determine if there is probable cause for the matter to proceed to trial. Attorney-General Bill Schuette, who recently announced his candidacy for governor, has been trying to distance himself from the highly unpopular Snyder.

Attorney General Schuette (R) is trying to distance himself from Governor Snyder, because Schuette wants to run for governor, and Snyder is really hated in Michigan now.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. It’s another day in Trumpworld, and Sen. Corker thinks that he can suddenly have his come to Jesus moment while doing absolutely nothing in the Senate to actually block and stop Trump despite knowing that Trump is an unstable tangerine toddler who could start a nuclear war and no one would be able to stop him once the button is pressed?

Corker’s showing no particular moral courage here.

I get that some people might think that Corker’s allowing other more vulnerable Senators to step up and speak out, but this needs so much more than speaking out.

There’s actions that must occur.

The 25th Amendment exists for a reason. Impeachment exists for a reason.

The GOP wont take either seriously unless it’s a Democrat in the White House who got a blow job and lied about it. Threatening nuclear war, undermining US national security, running interference for the Russians, and helping the Russians manipulate the outcome of the US election don’t rise to the level of impeachment - that’s something the GOP only considers when it’s a Democrat in the WH.

Corker’s statements don’t mean nearly as much when Corker votes in lockstep with the Trump/GOP agenda. Get back to me when Corker opposes Trump in a tangible way.

Corker approved Trump nominees, despite knowing they’re entirely incompetent, unqualified, or intent on sabotaging the government.

Corker’s no hero. He’s a simpering extremist who thinks only of himself (same as all the rest of the GOPers who think only of looting the Treasury while shifting all the burdens on to those least able to afford them - which often means their core GOP supporters who buy the lies like coal mining jobs are coming back and building a wall will make the US great again).

Richard “White Dick” Spencer is threatening to sue Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati to allow him on their campuses to speak.

They’re going to have to go out of their way to protect the asshole because both schools are very urban and he will have some angry people that will want to rip his head off.

Check out the bold line. He’s from Montana isn’t he? That isn’t a white enough safe space for this White Dick?

WOSU - Richard Spencer Gives Ohio State Friday Deadline To Let Him Speak

An attorney for associates of white nationalist leader Richard Spencer said Sunday he’ll sue Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati if they don’t agree by Friday to make campus space available for Spencer to speak.

A Georgia college student, Cameron Padgett, contacted both universities last month about renting space in the latest effort to have Spencer speak on college campuses.

“Mr. Padgett and I are done waiting for your university’s review to be completed,” Michigan attorney Kyle Bristow wrote in emails sent to both universities on Sunday. “I imagine similar reviews are not required of politically left-wing events on campus, and your ‘review’ is therefore unconstitutionally discriminatory in and of itself.”

Bristow is the founder of a law firm dedicated to legal advocacy on behalf of a loose collection of white nationalists, white supremacists and anti-immigration populists called the alt-right.

Padgett asked the University of Cincinnati in late September to provide an auditorium to accommodate 800 people for Spencer to speak later this month. UC spokesman Greg Vehr said the university was assessing safety and logistical considerations. Vehr couldn’t be reached for comment on Sunday.

Padgett, who attends Georgia State University, submitted a second request to Ohio State after the first was denied last month. An OSU spokesman said the university was considering whether Spencer can be “accommodated without substantial risk to the safety of our students, faculty, staff and guests.” The spokesman had no additional comment on Sunday.

Spencer organized an August white nationalist rally that led to deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. He’s a leading figure in the white nationalist movement advocating for an “ethno-state” that would be a “safe space” for white people.

The Charlottesville rally left universities across the U.S. bracing for more clashes between right-wing extremists and those who oppose them. It also left schools struggling to ensure campus safety in the face of recruiting efforts by white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups while balancing concerns over freedom of speech.

The Ohio universities are the latest in a series of schools targeted by Spencer since Charlottesville.

Spencer and his associates in April were denied a request to speak at Auburn University in Alabama, prompting a federal lawsuit against the university. A judge ruled against Auburn, which then allowed Spencer to speak as planned.

Time was, I could watch the NFL and be blissfully unaware of the CTE crisis or that the players needed all kinds of drugs to dull the constant pain.

Since the NFL heinous actions to bury details of the links between CTE and player health [became public], I have stopped watching football altogether. When you worry more about a player’s health from the hits than you do about your team’s standing, it’s time to turn off the tv and regain my Sundays (and Mondays and Thursdays).

Of course all that has taken a back seat to the NFL having to address players who protest racial injustice by kneeling for the national anthem and a president who engages in publicity stunts to curry favor with goddamned Nazis.

There are still a couple of team owners who are palling around with Trump, and apparently that pissed off one person who was close to the Miami coach.

White privilege. More specifically, rich white privilege.

Anyone else, especially someone who’s not lily white, gets screwed if they’re carrying a joint, but white guys snorting bags of cocaine avoid the consequences.

In a just world, the coach would be fired, prosecutors would investigate and bring charges, etc., but this isn’t a just world.

Trump attended Steve Rubell’s funeral. I recall being somewhat surprised to read that as I didn’t think Trump would particularly care one way or another, but I guess he must have in his own weird way. Trump said he admired Rubell’s “loyalty”:

Bianca and Calvin were there, and Donald Trump and Carl Bernstein. And a woman named Hollywood and a man in a pink blazer carrying a long-haired white dog in a black duffel bag.

For a few minutes on a hot summer morning, Amsterdam Avenue was filled with people who shared the same social orbit 10 years ago. What brought them together one last time on a torn-up sidewalk was the funeral of Steve Rubell, the flamboyant co-founder of Studio 54, the discotheque that in so many ways defined a certain name-dropping milieu at the end of the 1970’s.

Mr. Trump talked about loyalty, saying it was something that Mr. Rubell had, but that many of his acquaintances did not.

”When he came out of prison, a lot of his friends abandoned him,” he said. ”He was a phenomenal man. Studio 54 had a tremendous impact on New York. It made New York hot again.”

nytimes.com

Save that link. I noticed the mention of Trump’s name had been edited out of Steve Rubell’s Wikipedia page, but the source was still there, the NY Times article, which mentions Trump by name and quotes him.

GOP uses drug testing to shame welfare recipients, even though all evidence points to them not being a problem. In places where this testing has been in effect, the state has spent more on testing than it’s clawed back as a result of identifying drug offenses.

In fact, the entire drug testing scheme is a payoff for those testing companies.

I’ve frequently suggested that anyone pushing for these kinds of drug testing regimes for welfare/safety net programs better start with testing all elected officials in the state/locality. You’d likely end up with far more identified as drug users.

(CNN)An attorney for the Russian billionaire who allegedly pushed for the June 2016 meeting between senior members of Trump’s team and a Russian lawyer says he has documents showing the meeting wasn’t really about dirt on Hillary Clinton.

An email exchange and talking points provided to CNN are the latest indication of how some of the meeting participants plan to make their case about why the meeting with Donald Trump Jr. did not amount to collusion between Russian officials and the Trump campaign.

The new information stands in contrast with the initial email pitching the meeting to Trump Jr., which promised damaging information on Clinton.

The emails provided to CNN between Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and publicist Rob Goldstone — who arranged the meeting with Trump Jr. — show Veselnitskaya asked the morning of the meeting for a Russian-American lobbyist to be added because of his knowledge of the Magnitsky Act, the legislation that put in place US sanctions discussed at the meeting

I’m sure the Magic Balance Fairy Dust snorters at CNN don’t consider the possibility that those e-mails lie. After all, nobody kisses Trump’s ass more than CNN and then gets smacked around like an abused spouse!

re: #150 makeitstop

From the story:

Corker said that his concerns about Trump’s ability to govern are shared by nearly every Republican in the Senate. “Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here,” he told the Times. “Of course they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road.”

My emphasis added.

I’ve maintained all along that most Republicans in Congress just play along with Trump so they can get their own agenda moving, not that they like, or can even tolerate much, Trump.

Of course Trump has been ineffective in moving the Republican agenda (at least the parts that require action in Congress), because Trump is incompetent.

Trump has always been nothing more than a con-man. That he was elected illustrates how many easy marks are in America.

Donald Trump Can Destroy Records Without Judicial Review, Justice Department Tells Court

Deleted tweets? Purges of phone records? The erasing of secretly recorded conversations? The Trump Administration tells a D.C. judge that courts can’t review compliance with preservation laws.

What is the purpose of the Justice Department again?

In a court filing Friday, not only do attorneys at the Justice Department say that courts can’t review this, but they also argue that when it comes to laws pertaining to government record-keeping, judicial review would be inappropriate even if Trump deleted secret recordings with administration officials or even if his staff purged phones because they expected to be subpoenaed in connection with various investigations.

According to a Reuters poll rural and small town voters are starting to notice Trump isn’t doing any of the things he promised, but he sure is playing a lot of golf. Reuters says his popularity is slipping for a variety of reasons (local jobs not coming bad, not building the wall, too hard on immigrants already here, healthcare, etc. etc.) but it strikes me that it’s really all one reason. He isn’t following through on the (unrealistic) promises with which he conned people. And, they’re starting to notice. They were gullible, but they aren’t stupid.

Trump is playing to the common RW belief that the federal government really doesn’t do anything anyway. Even the president has so much time on his hands, he can just knock off for the day and play a few holes.

Instead he’s proving that the federal government does do important things — normally — and we’re now seeing what happens if it basically were to shut down indefinitely. If it weren’t for all those civil servants doing their regular jobs, we’d be in deeper shit than we are now.

While I believe the current protests in the NFL and other leagues are inappropriate, I also recognize that the athletes are exercising their First Amendment rights. As elected officials we have an obligation and duty to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans. In that spirit, I would like to extend an invitation to NFL players who have recently knelt during the national anthem, including Mr. Kaepernick, to meet with my at the Naval Observatory in order to discuss their concerns.

Even if you don’t follow through on anything, it puts the ball in the players’ court and makes it at least look like you care (hell, it might even end some of the protests if you actually take the meeting). I don’t see how this is so difficult.

I still wonder how big that base truly is. According to wikipedia, Trump only got 44% of the primary vote, and my guess is that number was bumped up from late primaries where the writing was on the wall and only a token opposition remained. I mean, if the early primaries only had 4-5 candidates instead of 15, would it have turned out differently?

That said, my point was more about how someone in the (vice-)president’s position should be acting. I don’t expect that kind of action from this group because they are morons, but also because they are tone deaf to anything other than the 28% that will support them no matter what.

Allowing CHIP to expire is still more proof.

As if all the other attempts to repeal Obamacare and gut health coverage for tens of millions of people, the sabotage of Obamacare, the attempts to cut funding to Medicaid and Medicare, and reducing funding for mental health treatment weren’t enough proof that the GOP doesn’t care about anything other than getting a woman to carry to term no matter the dangers to the woman and then saddle women with burdens because the GOP has gutted the safety net that would help provide health care, food, and basic services to poor women.

It’s just more of the same misogyny that the GOP has dealt in for decades. It’s just more out in the open.

GOP isn’t pro life.

Yet, a lot of women vote for them.

Add in Trump and you would have thought women would have run away screaming from the party and not electing the “Pussy Grabber” as president.

But…

Frickin Bill O’Reilly is truly a moron.

It’s actually downhill from there.

For the record, Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic between 1492 and 1504. He was looking for a route to Asia so he could buy spices at a discount or something.

But Chris kept running into various Caribbean islands, also the formidable obstacles of South and Central America. There was no passage to the Far East, only an endless drifting around.

Along the way, Columbus ran into some Indian tribes, most notably the Caribes. They did not like Chris and his malodorous European crews. Strife broke out and some bad stuff went down on both sides.

On the island of Hispaniola, present day Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Columbus did establish slavery to support various laborious enterprises. Not good. Slave labor was common at the time the world over, but that’s no excuse.

However, that was a minor part of the “Columbus business,” as Hollywood would have put it if they were wooing him for a three-picture deal. Mostly, Columbus was a brilliant navigator who opened up the world for travel. No small achievement.

He was trying to get to point A, but ended up somewhere else entirely, and he’s treated as a hero. He was lucky, not good.

He established slavery in those areas he did visit, but we’re supposed to ignore that.

Some bad things happened.

Yeah, having your ships get wrecked, your crews lost, etc. are reasons to be honoring him.

You can’t discover a place that was already known to the existing people that lived there. It might be new to you, but it isn’t to them.

Columbus was just very lucky there happened to be large land masses between Asia and Spain. He was not brilliant or especially gifted as a navigator. Had they not sighted land when they did, his crew either would have died at sea or mutinied, and sailed back to Europe.
