Will the GOP ever wake up and realize the danger Donald Trump poses to the security of the United States with his impulsive narcissistic behavior? Well, one prominent Republican seems to have finally reached that point: Bob Corker Says Trump’s Recklessness Threatens ‘World War III’.

WASHINGTON — Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the , charged in an interview on Sunday that President Trump was treating his office like “a reality show,” with reckless threats toward other countries that could set the nation “on the path to World War III.”

In an extraordinary rebuke of a president of his own party, Mr. Corker said he was alarmed about a president who acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something.”

“He concerns me,” Mr. Corker added. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”

An E-mail I just sent to my supposed never-Trump Senator Ben Sasse, on the topic of abortion (bold in original):

Your office’s E-mail concerning a bill to restrict abortion to twenty weeks contains a lie.

You claimed that a foetus is “pain-capable” at twenty weeks, and that is supported by scientific evidence.

That is a lie, and you know it’s a lie.

No medical or scientific organisation has ever claimed that. It is merely a way to smuggle your religious opinions into law by dressing it up as “science.” As a historian, you should be well aware of the dangers of manipulating falsehoods for a political agenda.

If you want to ban abortions after a particular time, then own your reasons to do so. But to lie about the scientific evidence only makes you morally bankrupt.

If you want to smuggle a religious position into secular law, then be honest, as your Bible tells you to (unless lying for your faith is what your religion teaches you).

You should be spending time as a Republican on fiscal conservatism and national security (such as securing our nation’s election system from Russian interference, removing a dangerous and incompetent and compromised president from office), not trying to shrink government so small it can fit in my wife’s uterus.

Do your job.

Representative Don Bacon (R-NE2) introduced a bill entitled H.R. 3897, the Gold Star Family Support and Installation Access Act of 2017.

It was co-sponsored by four Democrats and four Republicans.

It seeks to change the way Gold Star Families are treated under the law. Currently, you get a lapel pin.

Should the bill pass, it would extend access to bases and installations for life, allow family members to continue to attend unit functions or receive grief counselling, access to base facilities, &c.

First, it requires Gold Star spouses and children to have lifetime access to installations and gives the Secretary of Defense the ability to authorize similar access to next of kin. The bill also provides installation access reciprocity between the military services.

Second, H.R. 3897 allows remarried Gold Star spouses to keep their benefits as long as dependent children remain at home.

The eight bipartisan cosponsors of H.R. 3897 are all veterans: Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA), Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL), Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ), Rep. Anthony Brown (D-MD), and Rep. Steve Russell (R-OK).

Back to the argument of “if a ban doesn’t end all crime, then the ban is useless.” Murder bans or rape bans haven’t ended all instances of those crimes, so they are obviously useless. (And lots of bans have worked - bans on dangerous pharmaceuticals, bans on unsafe consumer products, &c.)

Mr. Cox is going for that tired argument again. The point of laws (whether a ban or restriction) is to punish anti-social behaviour. They give society a recourse when someone does something society deems unacceptable.

Court testimony exposes governor’s lies about Flint water crisis (Goes to World Socialist Website)

In a critical turn of events in a Flint courtroom, testimony given by Harvey Hollins, an appointee of Governor Rick Snyder, contradicted Snyder’s repeated claims that he did not learn of a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease until January 12, 2016.

On October 6, in Genesee County’s 67th District Court, Hollins stated he told Snyder about the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in December 2015. The Flint water crisis began three and a half years ago when the city’s water source was switched from the Detroit water system to the Flint River without adding corrosion controls, an act of negligence which allowed lead to leach from the pipes. Although health experts warned of the danger of Legionnaires’ disease and the possible link to the change in the city’s water source as early as October 2014, their efforts to investigate the situation were blocked by high-placed officials in state and federal agencies.

The issue of whether Snyder lied under oath before a US congressional hearing in March 2016, is a significant development. The matter arose during a preliminary hearing concerning the first of 13 officials facing criminal charges over the Flint catastrophe. The hearings are being held to determine if there is probable cause for the matter to proceed to trial. Attorney-General Bill Schuette, who recently announced his candidacy for governor, has been trying to distance himself from the highly unpopular Snyder.

Corker’s showing no particular moral courage here.

I get that some people might think that Corker’s allowing other more vulnerable Senators to step up and speak out, but this needs so much more than speaking out.

There’s actions that must occur.

The 25th Amendment exists for a reason. Impeachment exists for a reason.

The GOP wont take either seriously unless it’s a Democrat in the White House who got a blow job and lied about it. Threatening nuclear war, undermining US national security, running interference for the Russians, and helping the Russians manipulate the outcome of the US election don’t rise to the level of impeachment - that’s something the GOP only considers when it’s a Democrat in the WH.

Corker’s statements don’t mean nearly as much when Corker votes in lockstep with the Trump/GOP agenda. Get back to me when Corker opposes Trump in a tangible way.

Corker approved Trump nominees, despite knowing they’re entirely incompetent, unqualified, or intent on sabotaging the government.

Corker’s no hero. WOSU - Richard Spencer Gives Ohio State Friday Deadline To Let Him Speak

An attorney for associates of white nationalist leader Richard Spencer said Sunday he’ll sue Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati if they don’t agree by Friday to make campus space available for Spencer to speak.

A Georgia college student, Cameron Padgett, contacted both universities last month about renting space in the latest effort to have Spencer speak on college campuses.

“Mr. Padgett and I are done waiting for your university’s review to be completed,” Michigan attorney Kyle Bristow wrote in emails sent to both universities on Sunday. “I imagine similar reviews are not required of politically left-wing events on campus, and your ‘review’ is therefore unconstitutionally discriminatory in and of itself.”

Bristow is the founder of a law firm dedicated to legal advocacy on behalf of a loose collection of white nationalists, white supremacists and anti-immigration populists called the alt-right.

Padgett asked the University of Cincinnati in late September to provide an auditorium to accommodate 800 people for Spencer to speak later this month. UC spokesman Greg Vehr said the university was assessing safety and logistical considerations. Vehr couldn’t be reached for comment on Sunday.

Padgett, who attends Georgia State University, submitted a second request to Ohio State after the first was denied last month. An OSU spokesman said the university was considering whether Spencer can be “accommodated without substantial risk to the safety of our students, faculty, staff and guests.” The spokesman had no additional comment on Sunday.

Spencer organized an August white nationalist rally that led to deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. He’s a leading figure in the white nationalist movement advocating for an “ethno-state” that would be a “safe space” for white people.

The Charlottesville rally left universities across the U.S. bracing for more clashes between right-wing extremists and those who oppose them. It also left schools struggling to ensure campus safety in the face of recruiting efforts by white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups while balancing concerns over freedom of speech.

The Ohio universities are the latest in a series of schools targeted by Spencer since Charlottesville.

Spencer and his associates in April were denied a request to speak at Auburn University in Alabama, prompting a federal lawsuit against the university. A judge ruled against Auburn, which then allowed Spencer to speak as planned.

Time was, I could watch the NFL and be blissfully unaware of the CTE crisis or that the players needed all kinds of drugs to dull the constant pain.

Since the NFL heinous actions to bury details of the links between CTE and player health [became public], I have stopped watching football altogether. When you worry more about a player’s health from the hits than you do about your team’s standing, it’s time to turn off the tv and regain my Sundays (and Mondays and Thursdays).

Of course all that has taken a back seat to the NFL having to address players who protest racial injustice by kneeling for the national anthem and a president who engages in publicity stunts to curry favor with goddamned Nazis.

There are still a couple of team owners who are palling around with Trump, and apparently that pissed off one person who was close to the Miami coach.

GOP uses drug testing to shame welfare recipients, even though all evidence points to them not being a problem. In places where this testing has been in effect, the state has spent more on testing than it’s clawed back as a result of identifying drug offenses.

In fact, the entire drug testing scheme is a payoff for those testing companies.

I’ve frequently suggested that anyone pushing for these kinds of drug testing regimes for welfare/safety net programs better start with testing all elected officials in the state/locality. You’d likely end up with far more identified as drug users.

So, I’ve mentioned I listen to the Dan Patrick (sportsball) show in the morning as background chatter.

He just ripped on Mike Pence for a disingenuous political stunt that took away from Peyton Manning’s statue unveiling day by showing up and then leaving the NFL game in Indianapolis yesterday.

He also got on Jerry Jones who now has decided to back Trump by saying any player that doesn’t stand for the National Anthem will be benched.

Ahh, that pillar of American Democracy and Constitutional Freedoms Jerry Jones. Probably realized it could cost him a few dollars in tickets. Besides he already got down on his knee for a photo op and made it in all the news reports. What do you want from the guy?

I still wonder how big that base truly is. According to wikipedia, Trump only got 44% of the primary vote, and my guess is that number was bumped up from late primaries where the writing was on the wall and only a token opposition remained. I mean, if the early primaries only had 4-5 candidates instead of 15, would it have turned out differently?

That said, my point was more about how someone in the (vice-)president’s position should be acting. I don’t expect that kind of action from this group because they are morons, but also because they are tone deaf to anything other than the 28% that will support them no matter what.

For the record, Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic between 1492 and 1504. He was looking for a route to Asia so he could buy spices at a discount or something.

But Chris kept running into various Caribbean islands, also the formidable obstacles of South and Central America. There was no passage to the Far East, only an endless drifting around.

Along the way, Columbus ran into some Indian tribes, most notably the Caribes. They did not like Chris and his malodorous European crews. Strife broke out and some bad stuff went down on both sides.

It’s easy to fall into a culture-bound trap, judging historical figures by the mores of 21st Cent literate America.

Bottom line: No one born before 2016 gets a controversy-free statue.
