In the Seth Meyers clip, Trump said that the orders he will sign to help people with their health insurance will cost America nothing. He is probably speaking the literal truth — because he is transferring costs to the consumer who will be unable to afford health care and will either die or go bankrupt or both. We need to be contacting our Senators and Congressmen to stop this evil man and evil government from destroying health care.

It is certainly possible that whatever action he takes is legal. Laws are not always written carefully enough to escape deliberate sabotage by someone in power. And thanks to the malfeasance and malice of the GOP, it was never possible to pass subsequent legislation to correct any flaws in the ACA.

ICE ordered a local businessman to sell his business so they can deport him to Colombia, refusing to renew his E-2 visa. They claim he doesn’t meet the “strict requirements of an E-2 visa.”

He came to the USA as an exchange student sponsored by a company in Iowa. When he complained about the living conditions he was staying in (they were supposed to find sponsors for the exchange students but they never did), the company said they would ship him off to the smallest town in Nebraska they could find.

So they did. They sent him to Minatare (pop. 800, a bit west of here). He finished school there, then went to Western Nebraska Community College, finished his college in Colombia and Argentina, said to his father he wanted to “go home” (Minatare), then returned and started a business in Scottsbluff.

His fiancée came to join him in Minatare, and is attending college now at WNCC.

They are going to return to Colombia and start the residency visa process from there, considering it the ethical thing to do.

An E-2 visa is a business investment visa (which includes starting businesses). Under prior administrations his visa renewals were never a problem.

More on this poor guy’s plight at the Scottsbluff (NE) Star-Herald. He considers Minatare his home.

Thanks, GOP, the party of non-support of small business - gotta hate Latinos more.

I’ve never heard the slur “Sea Mexican” used either for Puerto Ricans or Filipinos. It took me zero seconds to figure out it was a slur when I saw that though.

I’ve never heard ‘Sea Mexicans’ either, but it did remind me of ‘Mexicans of the Pacific’ enough to make the comparison. I’m not sure if Rick Wilson simply coined it as a comment on Trump’s racism and contempt for Hispanic-Americans in general, or if it was something actually used, but…yeah.

Well, Trumpy ain’t gonna like this - and come to think of it, Israel might not either.

Iran is one of the world markets that everyone wanted recently to get a share of with the prospect of sanctions ending, oil and gas exports starting in a significant way, and imports rolling in as the country starts to modernise.

US president Donald Trump’s often voiced reservations about the nuclear deal with Iran, which paved the way for the market opening thaw, could prove a problem for that trade scenario but Trump’s threats have still to take effect.

And the Czech Republic, although not perhaps among the leaders in moves to land some of those orders, has nonetheless been very active in positioning itself in Iran as well in spite of some of its handicaps.

One of those disadvantages has been that official diplomatic relations between Tehran and Prague have been as good as frozen for the last 20 years. The Czech alignment with US-led claims that Iran was developing its nuclear weapons capacity under the guise of a civil programme was one issue and the US funded broadcasts of Radio Free Europe to Iran out of Prague was another factor in cooling relations.

But full scale diplomatic relations between Prague and Tehran now appear on the verge of being restored, according to the Czech business daily, Hospodářské Noviny. Within weeks the two countries should confirm their respective ambassadors and they should take up their posts, the paper adds. It adds that the experienced diplomat and head of the current Czech office in Tehran, Svatopluk Čumba, has already been given the nod by the Iranians that he can take up the post. The process should be completed by the end of the year.

radio.cz

Czech Republic might end up on Trump’s shit list.

On that drug dealer issue, wherever you stand on the death penalty, there is a reason it is only applied to murder.

It used to be applied in some states to rape as well. States eventually got rid of that punishment for rape because if someone raped someone else, there was no reason to leave the victim alive; the criminal had already committed a capital crime.

I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one in my village, but I could see that argument used for drug dealers, and additionally an VIII Amendment argument (unusual punishment).

Well that depends. As reported:

Trump’s act of disrespect occurred during an interview that happened in a hangar at the Air National Guard base in Pennsylvania.

Trump referred to the bugle call as a “nice sound,” and asked Hannity if they were playing it “in honor of his ratings.”

As the official Army website notes, playing “Retreat” is “one of the oldest traditions in the U.S. Army, which dates back to the Revolutionary War.” Playing the song is used “to signal the end of the duty day and pay respect to the nation’s flag.”

I don’t know about the Air National Guard. Every Navy base I was on considered an aircraft hanger with the doors open to be “outside.”

That said, the US Flag Code (almost) gives Donald Trump a (weasel way) out (he didn’t issue a proclamation first):

4 USC Chapter 1 § 10. Modification of rules and customs by President

Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the flag of the United States of America, set forth herein, may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or desirable; and any such alteration or additional rule shall be set forth in a proclamation.

Executive Order No. 10834 issued by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 24, 1959, amended the provisions of Title 4, U.S.C., Chapter 1 and established the 50 star Flag as the official Flag of the United States, effective on July 4, 1960.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

The Tangerine toddler was busy this morning on Twitter and it was the usual fact-free bullshit and depraved indifference to the plight of millions of Americans still in the dark without power across Puerto Rico and the USVI.

Trump’s now complaining that the US shouldn’t keep FEMA in those places indefinitely.

He’s right. They should stay until their job is done.

It’s no where near done.

Puerto Rico has 84% of the island still without power. FEMA was aiming to get to 25% in a month, and it looks like they’re not going to make that. FEMA is shuffling officials around, because it’s a complete shitshow and Trump still hasn’t sent sufficient capabilities to the island to get power and basic services restored.

That’s entirely unconscionable, and we should remember when Bush got slammed for his failings with FEMA during and after Katrina. This is significantly worse, because Trump’s doing absolutely nothing different even after the shortcomings were identified.

Gen. Honore took on the lead role in rebuilding efforts and getting the relief efforts back on track.

Trump’s perpetually stuck on fucking moron.

He still thinks he’s doing a great job, even though there’s substantively no change in the power being restored on Puerto Rico. He’s too busy blaming the victims of the disaster for the slow pace of recovery.

When there’s absolutely no infrastructure left because everything was wiped out by a storm that everyone knew was going to do massive damage days in advance, Trump blames the victim.

A true leader would have made sure that resources were mobilized to address critical needs without any delay so that within hours of the storm clearing, help would arrive. They’d be in process of opening the ports and airports so that critical needs get in - generators to power hospitals and critical infrastructure and water and telcom functional.

After natural disasters stateside, we know that telcoms can bring in mobile hotspots/phone sites, so that they can get services up and running. Where’s that effort? Where is a major deployment of the Seabees or Army Corps of Engineers, who have capabilities to do the kind of work needed to clear roads, quickly set up infrastructure, including temporary facilities, etc. Snopes identifies that some units are there, but not particular numbers.

All that takes Trump to issue the orders. He’s too busy thinking about his next round of golf.

It’s particularly telling that the response is godawful when you do a search for Seabees or Army Corps and Puerto Rico, and there’s news from 2 weeks ago, and nothing since.

That is highly suggestive that those units aren’t there in sufficient numbers, because we’d know progress and reports.

Controversial move endorsed in UN cultural agency vote despite US threat of withholding £50m in funds

The State Department issued a statement saying a twenty-six year old law (from today) prohibited funding any UN agency that recognises Palestine. That law was adopted in 1991, during the George HW Bush administration.

Further ceding any reputation or responsibility we have on the global scale. Yet the way you hear it from conservatives, Trump is somehow making the world ‘respect’ us again after Obama.

I’d love to live in this conservative utopia these assholes seem to be making, where everything is hunky dory and perfect, but I can’t delude myself enough for that.

Not in a good mood today, mighty Casey struck out, booted the ball in the infield too.

I’m frankly stunned. I watched until about the 5th inning (when CLE was clawing their way back and got it to 3-2) then went to practice for a gig this weekend.

Honestly, I wrote NY off when they were 0-2. But like they say, that’s why they play the games.

re: #118 Eclectic Cyborg

Why the fuck does Spencer get so much attention anyway?

Because he’s well-spoken and normalises racism and Nazi ideology. The underlying goal of the networks is to make average white people feel fearful of the other, thus solidifying a tribal loyalty, and to make them feel better about their darker side. Average white people, in the age of FOX, are becoming more hateful and more racist. Thus putting someone like Spencer out makes them feel better about themselves because they can look at someone who sounds smart and think that their own dark thoughts are okay. It’s no different than the nauseating ‘understand Trump voter’ thinkpieces.

Why did Vikings have ‘Allah’ embroidered into funeral clothes? (goes to the BBC)

I imagine Curious Lurker would have found this fascinating, and might have been able to add to this. I regret I only knew her here for a short time.

Researchers in Sweden have found Arabic characters woven into burial costumes from Viking boat graves. The discovery raises new questions about the influence of Islam in Scandinavia, writes journalist Tharik Hussain.

They were kept in storage for more than 100 years, dismissed as typical examples of Viking Age funeral clothes.

But a new investigation into the garments - found in 9th and 10th Century graves - has thrown up groundbreaking insights into contact between the Viking and Muslim worlds.

Patterns woven with silk and silver thread have been found to spell the words “Allah” and “Ali”.

The message, no matter how it is spread, is only received if people want to accept it.

David Duke was not accepted when he was 30 something. He did get quite a bit of news coverage for the time. But that news coverage was also a part of the time, it was neutral to favorable. He was more or less shut down.

I think the fact that David Duke popped back up the last few years was because even he saw things are different now and there is an audience ready to accept the message of White Supremacy.

It’s freaking sad that this is even a thing now. But then, so much bad crap has come back again. Ignorance of the past.

The most depressing thing I keep taking away is just how…not new this is. This shit wasn’t just created. Just brought out into the open. This racism has existed and fostered and festered. Just…now there doesn’t seem to be much reason to hide it or even code it anymore. And we only went maybe a couple of decades where it wasn’t ok to outright let the freak flag fly before reverting back to the mean.

It feels like this is just what America is, and always will be, no matter how hard it’s fought. America IS Racism, and trying to change it will just eventually get you swallowed up by the hate and spite that truly defines it, forever.

You jest but I often see it in the comments on videos about Nazis on YouTube. People insisting that we should have helped Hitler rather than Stalin during WWII. I mean far be it for me to defend Stalin but uh yeah. That kind of goes what I’ve said about today’s kids having less people in their life who remember the Nazis. But I dunno.

Isn’t that what Chucky C Rage Furby said in what Charles has in last evening’s thread?

To me, so many people have to think in absolutes these days. You can’t just be a center-left liberal like I imagine many of us would describe ourselves as here, no you have to be a socialist, you have to be a libertarian, you have to be fascist, etc. I freely admit that my ideology isn’t always 100% consistent in a logical sense but it is something I find feasible in a complex world.

I think that’s why I’ve been so disillusioned lately man. I’ve been finding myself wondering if we were always this way and it’s something that can’t be escaped.

I can’t get on twitter, so I can’t find the exact quote, but it went something like “Racism is so much a part of America that when you attack racism, people think you’re attacking America.” Yes, racism is part of America, and I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of it. But then again, Germany has outlawed Nazism and yet it still thrives.

Well, no two people hold exactly the same views.

With three hundred million people plus in the country, it is a bit easier to lump people into general categories such as “liberal,” “conservative,” “libertarian,” &c based on what they generally hold to be acceptable.

For example, if you supported the following things: expansion of women’s reproductive healthcare access, easing ability to vote, higher taxation of corporate profits, expansion of infrastructure spending, and strong support for gun rights: Does the gun rights issue make you suddenly a “conservative” or “libertarian?”

I guess I just don’t understand the attraction. I don’t mind poking around Twitter looking for humorous tweets, but doing things like “curating” a Facebook page or Twitter timeline take time I don’t wish to expend.

I certainly don’t need a pile-on of a bunch of Nazis suddenly overtaking my pages if I had them.

It’s a thing. And as Charles has said about them, if you are running a site like this, they are a necessary evil to drive people to the site. Why? Because it is a thing. And Facebook and Twitter know it too, that is why they aren’t changing. It works and they make big bucks.

I know one thing. After watching that crap that Ari Melber showed with Zuckerberg’s totally tone deaf bullshit Virtual Tour of Puerto Rico, I hope the whole Facebook thing crashes and burns. That has got to be one of the most fucked up things ever. And I hope I never have to hear that asshole say he is going to run for President.

Black Wall Street gets the Tulsa “Race Riots”. Civil Rights Movements gets the assassinations of MLK, Malcom X, redlining, busing riots. Affirmative Action gets you three strike laws and the War on Drugs. The first black president gets immediately replaced by the Nazi’s and KKK’s favorite President who has made it his life’s work to undo every single fucking thing Obama had his name on, as well as scale back every single fucking bit of good that PoCs could maybe see in this country before. Black Lives Matter gets “All Lives Matter”, “Blue Lives Matter” and the continued unchecked treatment of communities like fiefdoms by PDs, further enabled by Sessions Department of Just Us.

This is America, where every strive for equality is consistently met with an opposite backlash and backfire to ensure any gains you get are minimal at best, to remind you this is A Country For White Men, and White Men Alone.

I’m talking about people who feel the need to take the absolute position on issues. People don’t want see nuance. For instance, one can’t simply support the right of a person to own handguns and rifles but oppose civilians owning AKs and support background checks. It has to be one or all. You can’t be a capitalist who supports some socialist ideas and you can’t be a socialist who supports some capitalist ideas.

The main difference with Germany is that it came to grips with its Nazi past, didn’t shy away from it but actively rejected it.

We glorify our racist past to the point the Confederacy is more revered than the Union. We’re so far away from the kind of reckoning Germany had to deal with precisely because we don’t WANT that reckoning. America loves its racist past even while it makes gestures toward trying to be better, because it doesn’t want to be better. So much of the country so desperately wishes it could be the Confederacy, the only thing keeping it from being the de facto Confederacy again is that they haven’t re-enstated true slavery…yet.

My guess is that, being practical people (and I suspect a good word for them is practical, in that they used whatever was available), they wanted to cover all the bases in the deity department. Why not make sure all the gods were happy?

In the book Gods and Myths of Northern Europe by H.R. Ellis Davidson, she talks about how Christianity possibly got a foothold in the west. The west was pretty open to polytheism, so pretty much put up with any/all religions. The Christians just kinda came in and setup shop and no one really bothered with it because there were a bunch of other religions being practiced all over.

Then the Christians starting insinuating themselves over the years with the rulers of western countries. They then weaseled their way into convincing some rulers that Christianity should be the only religion they should let their people observe.

I think many Christian leaders now days might know this history and are really worried that someone else (Islam?) might try executing that same game plan, so all other religions must be eradicated before Christians get done unto themselves what they have done unto others.

I’m not on Facebook or Twitter either. I do talk to my (adult) kids. However, if your kids have kids of their own and particularly if they don’t live near you, Facebook is where the information appears. The pictures, the videos, the fact that they have cut a tooth, whatever because the parents only have to put the info up once, not write letters to 2 sets of grandparents, 5 or 6 aunts and uncles, and a dozen cousins. There are actual advantages.

I wonder too if people are spread out way more now than ever. Families used to be closer and they used to get together more for cookouts, picnics, birthdays, graduations, reunions and other shared family activities.

And they could catch up, share pictures, meet the new members of the family, etc. They even could let others know about the black sheep family members and how they were doing. That was social media. And in ways it kept down the rancor because if Uncle John said something that got Nephew Jimmy upset, grandpa would step in and read the family riot acts. All 25 parts.

A lot of that is gone.

I felt old typing the words picnic and reunion. Do people even do those anymore?

We still do family gatherings. Not as much as we used to but I think it’s because of what you say above about families being less closer though perhaps in our case, geography plays a role there too. But you know the cool thing about social media and the recent genealogy craze is it’s also brought people together too. I honestly can’t imagine. Anyhow and this is why I disagree with AM’s “just use a phone or letter.” One of my cousins, we didn’t know each other well at all when I was growing up because well she lived a few hours away and thus didn’t go to the family gatherings. But anyhow, when Facebook became accessible to all adults, she joined, added me, and we’ve become really tight. My brother likewise formed a similiar bond with another cousin who lived far away. I’m sure when the phone was invented, there were people wondering why people didn’t just write letters.

That is probably true for some families, but mine has been pretty scattered at least back through my grandparents’ generation. We just didn’t see all the information about each other that is now available on line. Mr. C’s family did do the reunion thing every so often as they were almost all within a few hours drive of each other.

Oh, it has. I was paralyzingly shy as a kid. Even had to have my brother knock on my best friend’s door. I’ve gotten over a lot of my social anxieties but some things are still a little difficult. I don’t like calling customer service for one.

re: #97 lawhawk

Is Depraved Indifference a High Crime/Misdemeanor? Will that suffice for impeachment? His management skills are such that he is actively killing people.

Give him the Gong!

re: #134 Decatur Deb

First guess: The Vikings bartered for the pretty North African clothes with squiggly words.
Second guess: They stole them.

Trade goods. They owned Siciliy for a while, booting the Moors out:

Viking Age[edit]
In 860, according to an account by the Norman monk Dudo of Saint-Quentin, a Viking fleet, probably under Björn Ironside and Hastein, landed in Sicily, conquering it .[17]

Many Norsemen fought as mercenaries in Southern Italy, including the Varangian Guard led by Harald Hardrada, who later became king of Norway, who conquered Sicily between 1038 and 1040, with the help of Norman mercenaries, under William de Hauteville, who won his nickname Iron Arm by defeating the emir of Syracuse in single combat, and a Lombard contingent, led by Arduin.[18][19] The Varangians were first used as mercenaries in Italy against the Arabs in 936.[20] Runestones were raised in Sweden in memory of warriors who died in Langbarðaland (Land of the Lombards), the Old Norse name for southern Italy.[21]

Later, several Anglo-Danish and Norwegian nobles participated in the Norman conquest of southern Italy, like Edgar the Ætheling, who left England in 1086,[22] and Jarl Erling Skakke, who won his nickname (“Skakke”, meaning bent head) after a battle against Arabs in Sicily.[23] On the other hand, many Anglo-Danish rebels fleeing William the Conqueror, joined the Byzantines in their struggle against the Robert Guiscard, duke of Apulia, in Southern Italy.[24]

I’ve been known to E-mail my wife when she is sitting right behind me, but it’s mostly to be cute. It’s usually a romantic remark.

That also turns out to be a good way to interrupt her without getting her mad. How do you get mad at someone who just E-mailed “I love you?”

I grew up with a coöperative telephone company. My telephone number was “one long ring, two short rings.”

In my late teenage years, we got dial telephone service and could make local calls without using an operator (to tell her our billing number).

Facebook is stunned by this —

Trump: What’s the 25th Amendment?

Of course, he didn’t know about the 25th amendment. That’s why he’s been acting so crazy. You didn’t think he’d be acting this crazy if he knew he could be removed for being crazy, did ya? I mean, hell, he ain’t that crazy.

juanitajean.com

There’s a lot of drama supposedly going down in the White House right now. According to a report from Vanity Fair, tensions are high, Donald Trump is reportedly having insane mood swings, and many members of the administration are miserable. Perhaps the biggest bombshell from all this? Donald Trump didn’t know about the 25th Amendment… which is just, yikes.

Two sources told Vanity Fair that former chief strategist Steve Bannon explained to Trump that he shouldn’t be nervous about impeachment, but rather the 25th Amendment.

To which Trump responded: “What’s that?”

I would argue with my doctor who would prescribe 7 to 10 days antibiotics. 7 to 10 days later I’d be sick again after some improvement. I read up, sinus area has low blood flow, oral AB is needed for 3 weeks sometimes more. It’s correct. I only got better after I had an MRI that showed a deviated septum and a bone “hook” that did not allow proper drainage. Outpatient surgery and a week of crap and worlds better.

The bonds are primarily held by such entities as hedge funds and speculators.

You would need to buy the bonds from them.

Presumably, they would want a significant profit. It would take a lot of money.

In theory, you can tear up any bond if you want.

The Snopes article points out it is the US Navy team, when they recently appeared against Tulsa University.

Tulsa and the US Navy also point out that the teams waited in the locker room during the anthem, which is customary in college football.

That said, the public display of religious piety by the Navy team is inappropriate (and one wonders what would happen to a non-Christian player, or a player that follows the New Testament command to pray in private, not like the hypocrites).

He wants to kill the ACA. Keep in mind that this doesn’t effect the Medicaid expansion at all, and that the 80% of marketplace customers who are subsidized will likely prevent a deathspiral. The people it will hurt the most are older, sicker people in rural areas who earn too much to get subsidies, and may find that premiums go too high for them to afford or may not have any options at all. I had that done back with no copay. Now thanks to the Tangerine Tyrant I may have to do the GoFundMe routine when the bills go back to what they were before the ACA was passed!

Ten years ago soon after my divorce was finalized and I was still working on my master’s thesis I got hit with a hypertensive crisis. It wasn’t just the stress, genetics played a huge role, my Dad had a hypertensive crisis in his mid thirties too. When I finally went in my BP was 220 / 180! I’d previously gotten my insurance through my ex-wife and the only reason I was able to escape insane amounts of debt and a medical bankruptcy was through being so poor that I managed to qualify for Santa Barbara County’s Medically Indigent Adult program.

An angel of a cardiologist thought the hospital was discharging me early and agreed to see me afterwards for $30 per office visit. So on top of the two days in the ICU and third in a monitoring ward, plus the CT, MRI, cardiac & kidney echo & bubble study, he helped me get the County to pay for a MIBG gamma scan just on the off chance I had a pheochromocytoma (I didn’t).

I got better, got a job that offered insurance, then moved to Simi and freelanced and found out I couldn’t get insurance on the private market because of my pre-existing condition. The fact that my BP was now controlled with cheap meds didn’t mean anything. Fortunately the ACA then passed and I was able to get insurance through PCIP and then through the same exchange plans we all have access to.

So yeah, I’m kind of pissed off today.

HappyWarrior  Oct 12, 2017 • 11:05:01am

The biggest lie the religious right tells though is you can’t pray in public school. No, Engel says you can’t force prayer in school which is a good thing. I’m no longer religious but even I know that prayer is meant to be personal between an individual and their deity or deities. I certainly did pray when my Nana died when I was in high school. But I wouldn’t have wanted it forced on my classmates either.

re: #335 HappyWarrior

That would actually be an interesting research paper, history of non-Christians in the U.S. military.

There was the issue of the “Army Fitness Tracker” from 2011 that would assess various things about a soldier, and the software would claim that non-Christians were unfit to serve in the Army.

(I took the fitness tracker when it went on-line and it said the same about me.)

huffingtonpost.com (from 2011)

A cursory search doesn’t seem to indicate such a history has been done, but recent surveys have.

Number of non-Christians in the military may surprise you (Belleville, IL News-Democrat)

Q: When I watched the Democratic National Convention, I was utterly sick at heart when the father of Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq, spoke. With so much talk about how America is a “Christian-only” country, is there any way to find out how many non-Christian men and women serve in our armed forces?

A: This may come as a shock to some, but a Department of Defense survey taken in 2009 found that just over a third of those who agreed to be questioned (more than 6,000) said they either were not Christian or had no religious preference.

Of those, the vast majority chose “none of the above” — about 25 percent. But nearly 4 percent identified with humanism (the belief in critical thinking and evidence over dogma and superstition) while Jews, pagans, Eastern religions and “less common” religions came in at about 1 percent each. Roman Catholics topped the Christian faiths with 20 percent followed by Baptists with nearly 18 percent. Muslims numbered about a half percent.

I continue to believe the players as a group have more power than the fans (who are addicted to the game) and the owners.

Gotta unite together for sure. I’m honestly proud that we have so many outspoken athletes this generation. Not just stars like Lebron but lesser known guys too.

it’s such crap to claim that a non-Christian couldn’t serve honorably. It always bothered me that H.W. Bush said that about atheists. You don’t need to believe in God to love your country.

I think it’s like that with any entertainment though. They want artists to shut up too even though politics is inevitably linked with art. Why should one be shocked or upset if an artist who has recorded music about alienation be shocked if said artist calls out someone like Trump on stage?

The biggest lie the religious right tells though is you can’t pray in public school. No, Engel says you can’t force prayer in school which is a good thing. I’m no longer religious but even I know that prayer is meant to be personal between an individual and their deity or deities. I certainly did pray when my Nana died when I was in high school. But I wouldn’t have wanted it forced on my classmates either.

I wonder how many Southern Baptists would be on-board if a majority Catholic area forced a daily Angelus or Rosary on them? They’d be clamouring for the Separation of Church and State just as loudly as they are trying to tear it down now.

That separation not only protects the government from pernicious encroachment of religion, it prevents the government from squashing religious freedom of Churches. The best protection for a religion from the depredations of government is that wall of separation.

Baptists forget it was their own who first argued for it, back when the Bill of Rights was being mooted. Baptists were exiled, jailed, and killed for their beliefs in Congregationalist New England.

We actually saw how they’d feel when large numbers of Catholics first arrived from Ireland and Germany in the 1840’s. And yes Baptists themselves were discriminated against which is why they argued for separation of church and state in the first place.

In most fascist states (or states like them), it’s usually the free press up against the wall first.

During the Republican Primary season, the publisher of my regional paper sent an E-mail to the readership that has Internet service asking if the newspaper was leaning too liberal in coverage? (Short answer, no. Longer answer, Bwahahahahah!)

I wrote a long thoughtful E-mail back noting Trump’s fascist rhetoric then, and also noted in fascist societies it’s usually newspaper publishers and journalists put up against a wall first.

He did not acknowledge my E-mail, but printed several short letters on the op-ed page claiming “yeah, the paper leans too liberal.”

Using the public airwaves is a privilege.

It doesn’t have to be this way. America lets radio and TV broadcasters use public airwaves worth more than half a trillion dollars for free. In return, we require that broadcasters serve the public interest: devoting at least some airtime for worthy programs that inform voters, support local arts and culture and educate our children — in other words, that aspire to something beyond just minimizing costs and maximizing revenue.

Using the public airwaves is a privilege — a lucrative one — not a right, and I fear the F.C.C. has not done enough to stand up for the public interest. Our policies should reward broadcasters that honor their pledge to serve that interest and penalize those that don’t.

The F.C.C. already has powerful leverage to hold broadcasters to their end of the bargain. Every eight years, broadcasters must prove that they have served the public interest in order to get license renewal. If they can’t, the license goes to someone else who will. It’s a tough but fair system — if the commission does its job.

I’m actually enjoying the dragging Twitter’s getting over banning Rose McGowan. I don’t think it’ll make them behave, but it’s good to see them getting the black eyes they deserve.

Won’t matter until there’s an exodus from Twitter. If folks continue to stay, it’s no skin off Twitter’s teeth.

A mass of people leaving Twitter because they are becoming a Russian propaganda outlet and swill of fascism is the only thing that will get their attention.

They are libertarians: they have no loyalty to anything but money.

This climate-change denying old crank may soon be Trump’s new national science adviser.

He currently serves as vice president of the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness — an outré association of science-minded nonconformists, conspiracy theorists and dissenters (also funded by Robert Mercer). “Art is revered by those people,” says Bast, who has attended several of DDP’s annual meetings. At this year’s event, which took place in August on the theme of “Restoring Greatness in American Science and Health,” presenters spoke about the bullying of climate skeptics, the widespread use of phony global-warming models, scientific misconduct at the Environmental Protection Agency and the story of Chernobyl and other “radioactive fairytales.” Robinson himself gave a talk on the “vaccine controversy” — he believes they’re given too early in a child’s life, as a rule — and there was a banquet reception for the infamous anti-vaxxer Andrew Wakefield. Earlier meetings have attacked the science linking HIV and AIDS and questioned claims that we’re in the middle of a mass extinction.

Nebraska doesn’t use much salt. The state mostly uses sand (when they bother to do anything). Salt damages fields next to roads.

And this debate was in 1965.

plus you add into the mix that the flag and anthem seem somehow correlated with “police” and “first responders”, etc, so the whole thing seems like demanding that the players worship a group that doesn’t respect them.

And that’s the thing about respect: It is earned, not demanded.

You might make someone go through a ritual of respect, but that ritual will quickly turn to contempt.

Someone posted a political cartoon here of the history of whites demanding blacks “get up,” from slave masters to lunch counters to buses to football fields.

A nation treating all with respect and dignity would engender respect in turn that was actually meaningful, not a religious ritual demanded from the flock.

And the whole protest is not about respect for the flag, “the troops,” or any of that. It is a protest demanding to be treated fairly.

Conservatives will never be satisfied, because conservatism is about power, not equality. For four hundred years conservatives have consistently opposed equality for minorities in this land, there is no reason to think they’ll change now.

That goes back to my note above: re: #98 Anymouse 🌹

A law was passed under the apartheid-supporting W administration requiring withholding of funds or withdrawing from any UN organisation that recognised Palestine. We have been withholding funds from UNESCO ever since they seated Palestine and recognised them.

Withdrawal from UNESCO may be repugnant, but that is the law bigoted conservatives passed back then. Elections have always had consequences, which is why I have never knowingly voted for a conservative.

They were bigots when I was born, they are bigots now, they will be bigots long after I die.

But withdrawing from UNESCO is required by law. The alternative would be to get the GOP congress to repeal the law they passed.

Yeah, I don’t think Wilson intended it that way. I still remember a brother of a neighborhood friend who called every Hispanic, “Mexican.” It was amusing to me and my brother because well Northern Virginia doesn’t have a ton of Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants. It was pretty neat recently though. I attended a baseball game with my SiL’s sister and her husband. They’re both native Spanish speakers and we were sitting near some other Spanish speakers so my Dad who does speak Spanish as well but not enough to tell you where someone’s from asked my SiL’s sister’s husband “Can you tell us where they’re from?” Turned out they were Dominicans and we had a fun time watching the game with them.

So, I finished with the Baldwin and Buckley debate.

Buckley really is a great study in character speech mannerisms and body movements if you ever need to act like a pompous ass. I am now thinking many actors that have had such a role watched this debate.

And to sum up Buckley’s argument: Blacks are their own worst enemy.

And this debate was in 1965.

52 damn years…and it is all the same. Pledge allegiance to the flag. Stand for the National Anthem. All the same.

Blacks…you must stand in line the way we want you too.

And if you don’t and have to pay a price, you have done it to yourselves. Why? You did not follow the fashion and dictates of not White Supremacy, but of the majority. See how simple it all is?

All the damn…same.

And fuck William Buckley and the National Review.

52 damn years later and they are still the same. Protective of their power and capable of verbiage that is nothing but an eloquent excuse for being assholes to other humans.

And then their is something like Puerto Rico. I think Trump said they have in a way not been able to fend for themselves, they haven’t made their island what it could be if they just had drive. And they don’t have the money they owe…must be because they are lazy.

William Buckley would be so proud.

He was such an asshole. I hate the revising of him into being a noble conservative intellectual.

My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS when he was 4 and later Asperger Syndrome. He’s 23 now.

Through the years we’ve had all kinds of health insurance plans via The Husband’s employers. But the last few years, the cost of adding the kid to our insurance made it stupid expensive. So we went on the exchanges, found a plan he could afford (he’s been working since HS graduation, either in training programs and now is working independent of any agency help. He works at same company as The Husband just a different location), and that’s what we used until his latest job which offers pretty decent insurance.

If these soulless, evil, sociopathic freaks have their way my son would never be insurable again. Unless he paid more than he makes for insurance. Autism would be all the reason the insurance companies would need to deny coverage. Never mind the kid is healthy, rarely gets sick, doesn’t smoke, drinks very rarely or even really engages in some of the risky behavior many of his peers do.

These assholes really get off on death and suffering. I wish Karma worked faster.
