It is certainly possible that whatever action he takes is legal. Laws are not always written carefully enough to escape deliberate sabotage by someone in power. And thanks to the malfeasance and malice of the GOP, it was never possible to pass subsequent legislation to correct any flaws in the ACA.

ICE ordered a local businessman to sell his business so they can deport him to Colombia, refusing to renew his E-2 visa. They claim he doesn’t meet the “strict requirements of an E-2 visa.”
He came to the USA as an exchange student sponsored by a company in Iowa. When he complained about the living conditions he was staying in (they were supposed to find sponsors for the exchange students but they never did), the company said they would ship him off to the smallest town in Nebraska they could find.
So they did. They sent him to Minatare (pop. 800, a bit west of here). He finished school there, then went to Western Nebraska Community College, finished his college in Colombia and Argentina, said to his father he wanted to “go home” (Minatare), then returned and started a business in Scottsbluff.
His fiancée came to join him in Minatare, and is attending college now at WNCC.
They are going to return to Colombia and start the residency visa process from there, considering it the ethical thing to do.
An E-2 visa is a business investment visa (which includes starting businesses). Under prior administrations his visa renewals were never a problem.
More on this poor guy’s plight at the Scottsbluff (NE) Star-Herald. He considers Minatare his home.

One of those disadvantages has been that official diplomatic relations between Tehran and Prague have been as good as frozen for the last 20 years. The Czech alignment with US-led claims that Iran was developing its nuclear weapons capacity under the guise of a civil programme was one issue and the US funded broadcasts of Radio Free Europe to Iran out of Prague was another factor in cooling relations.
But full scale diplomatic relations between Prague and Tehran now appear on the verge of being restored, according to the Czech business daily, Hospodářské Noviny. Within weeks the two countries should confirm their respective ambassadors and they should take up their posts, the paper adds. It adds that the experienced diplomat and head of the current Czech office in Tehran, Svatopluk Čumba, has already been given the nod by the Iranians that he can take up the post. The process should be completed by the end of the year.

It used to be applied in some states to rape as well. States eventually got rid of that punishment for rape because if someone raped someone else, there was no reason to leave the victim alive; the criminal had already committed a capital crime.

Trump referred to the bugle call as a “nice sound,” and asked Hannity if they were playing it “in honor of his ratings.”
As the official Army website notes, playing “Retreat” is “one of the oldest traditions in the U.S. Army, which dates back to the Revolutionary War.” Playing the song is used “to signal the end of the duty day and pay respect to the nation’s flag.”
I don’t know about the Air National Guard. Every Navy base I was on considered an aircraft hanger with the doors open to be “outside.”
That said, the US Flag Code (almost) gives Donald Trump a (weasel way) out (he didn’t issue a proclamation first):

He still thinks he’s doing a great job, even though there’s substantively no change in the power being restored on Puerto Rico. He’s too busy blaming the victims of the disaster for the slow pace of recovery.
When there’s absolutely no infrastructure left because everything was wiped out by a storm that everyone knew was going to do massive damage days in advance, Trump blames the victim.
A true leader would have made sure that resources were mobilized to address critical needs without any delay so that within hours of the storm clearing, help would arrive. They’d be in process of opening the ports and airports so that critical needs get in - generators to power hospitals and critical infrastructure and water and telcom functional.
After natural disasters stateside, we know that telcoms can bring in mobile hotspots/phone sites, so that they can get services up and running. Where’s that effort? Where is a major deployment of the Seabees or Army Corps of Engineers, who have capabilities to do the kind of work needed to clear roads, quickly set up infrastructure, including temporary facilities, etc. Snopes identifies that some units are there, but not particular numbers.
All that takes Trump to issue the orders. He’s too busy thinking about his next round of golf.
It’s particularly telling that the response is godawful when you do a search for Seabees or Army Corps and Puerto Rico, and there’s news from 2 weeks ago, and nothing since.
That is highly suggestive that those units aren’t there in sufficient numbers, because we’d know progress and reports.

To me, so many people have to think in absolutes these days. The most depressing thing I keep taking away is just how…not new this is. This shit wasn’t just created. Just brought out into the open. This racism has existed and fostered and festered. Just…now there doesn’t seem to be much reason to hide it or even code it anymore. And we only went maybe a couple of decades where it wasn’t ok to outright let the freak flag fly before reverting back to the mean.

To me, so many people have to think in absolutes these days. In the book Gods and Myths of Northern Europe by H.R. Ellis Davidson, she talks about how Christianity possibly got a foothold in the west. The west was pretty open to polytheism, so pretty much put up with any/all religions. The Christians just kinda came in and setup shop and no one really bothered with it because there were a bunch of other religions being practiced all over.
Then the Christians starting insinuating themselves over the years with the rulers of western countries. They then weaseled their way into convincing some rulers that Christianity should be the only religion they should let their people observe.
I think many Christian leaders now days might know this history and are really worried that someone else (Islam?) might try executing that same game plan, so all other religions must be eradicated before Christians get done unto themselves what they have done unto others.

Anyhow and this is why I disagree with AM’s “just use a phone or letter.” One of my cousins, we didn’t know each other well at all when I was growing up because well she lived a few hours away and thus didn’t go to the family gatherings. But anyhow, when Facebook became accessible to all adults, she joined, added me, and we’ve become really tight. My brother likewise formed a similiar bond with another cousin who lived far away. I’m sure when the phone was invented, there were people wondering why people didn’t just write letters.

That is probably true for some families, but mine has been pretty scattered at least back through my grandparents’ generation. We just didn’t see all the information about each other that is now available on line. Mr. C’s family did do the reunion thing every so often as they were almost all within a few hours drive of each other.
For some reason my computer isn’t happy with me-I keep getting the spinning beach ball of death, so I’ll catch up with everyone here later. Maybe it will magically fix itself in the interim.

He’s right. They should stay until their job is done.

Puerto Rico has 84% of the island still without power. FEMA was aiming to get to 25% in a month, and it looks like they’re not going to make that. FEMA is shuffling officials around, because it’s a complete shitshow and Trump still hasn’t sent sufficient capabilities to the island to get power and basic services restored.
That’s entirely unconscionable, and we should remember when Bush got slammed for his failings with FEMA during and after Katrina. This is significantly worse, because Trump’s doing absolutely nothing different even after the shortcomings were identified.
Gen. Honore took on the lead role in rebuilding efforts and getting the relief efforts back on track.

He still thinks he’s doing a great job, even though there’s substantively no change in the power being restored on Puerto Rico. He’s too busy blaming the victims of the disaster for the slow pace of recovery.
When there’s absolutely no infrastructure left because everything was wiped out by a storm that everyone knew was going to do massive damage days in advance, Trump blames the victim.
A true leader would have made sure that resources were mobilized to address critical needs without any delay so that within hours of the storm clearing, help would arrive. They’d be in process of opening the ports and airports so that critical needs get in - generators to power hospitals and critical infrastructure and water and telcom functional.
After natural disasters stateside, we know that telcoms can bring in mobile hotspots/phone sites, so that they can get services up and running. Where’s that effort? Where is a major deployment of the Seabees or Army Corps of Engineers, who have capabilities to do the kind of work needed to clear roads, quickly set up infrastructure, including temporary facilities, etc. Snopes identifies that some units are there, but not particular numbers.
All that takes Trump to issue the orders. He’s too busy thinking about his next round of golf.
It’s particularly telling that the response is godawful when you do a search for Seabees or Army Corps and Puerto Rico, and there’s news from 2 weeks ago, and nothing since.
That is highly suggestive that those units aren’t there in sufficient numbers, because we’d know progress and reports.

They were approaching an intersection and the walk light changed as did the stop light. All three together walked out into the intersection not noticing anything and just about got hit by a car.

I suffered sinus infections that laid me out. Older I got, worse it became. I would be absolutely punchy. Sick for 4 and 6 weeks at a time just about every year. I would argue with my doctor who would prescribe 7 to 10 days antibiotics. 7 to 10 days later I’d be sick again after some improvement. I read up, sinus area has low blood flow, oral AB is needed for 3 weeks sometimes more. It’s correct. I only got better after I had an MRI that showed a deviated septum and a bone “hook” that did not allow proper drainage. Outpatient surgery and a week of crap and worlds better.
I don’t know what route your doc is on or how frequent your sinus problems are, but I suffered for years before I finally saw a specialist.

I suffered sinus infections that laid me out. Older I got, worse it became. I would be absolutely punchy. Sick for 4 and 6 weeks at a time just about every year. I would argue with my doctor who would prescribe 7 to 10 days antibiotics. 7 to 10 days later I’d be sick again after some improvement. I read up, sinus area has low blood flow, oral AB is needed for 3 weeks sometimes more. It’s correct. I only got better after I had an MRI that showed a deviated septum and a bone “hook” that did not allow proper drainage. Outpatient surgery and a week of crap and worlds better.
I don’t know what route your doc is on or how frequent your sinus problems are, but I suffered for years before I finally saw a specialist.

The bonds are primarily held by such entities as hedge funds and speculators.
You would need to buy the bonds from them.
Presumably, they would want a significant profit. It would take a lot of money.
In theory, you can tear up any bond if you want.

NOw if you do want to point out things though, it is definitely true to point out that Nate Boyer, former Green Beret and NFL player is the one who suggested Kaep kneel. And that Kaep’s teammate Eric Reid is the nephew and son of veterans. Eric even pointed out had his mother not been pregnant with him, she would have been deployed in Desert Storm.

The Snopes article points out it is the US Navy team, when they recently appeared against Tulsa University.
Tulsa and the US Navy also point out that the teams waited in the locker room during the anthem, which is customary in college football.
That said, the public display of religious piety by the Navy team is inappropriate (and one wonders what would happen to a non-Christian player, or a player that follows the New Testament command to pray in private, not like the hypocrites).

Well we don’t necessarily know if the prayer is supposed to be Christian or not.The times when I did pray in school during the moment of silence, I never meant it as a Christian prayer. Anyhow, it’s pre or post game. Doesn’t really bother me too much unless they’re hassling the guys who choose not to take part but a consensual team prayer really doesn’t bother me.

He wants to kill the ACA. Keep in mind that this doesn’t effect the Medicaid expansion at all, and that the 80% of marketplace customers who are subsidized will likely prevent a deathspiral. The people it will hurt the most are older, sicker people in rural areas who earn too much to get subsidies, and may find that premiums go too high for them to afford or may not have any options at all. IOW, Trump is screwing his own voters.

Ten years ago soon after my divorce was finalized and I was still working on my master’s thesis I got hit with a hypertensive crisis. It wasn’t just the stress, genetics played a huge role, my Dad had a hypertensive crisis in his mid thirties too. When I finally went in my BP was 220 / 180! I’d previously gotten my insurance through my ex-wife and the only reason I was able to escape insane amounts of debt and a medical bankruptcy was through being so poor that I managed to qualify for Santa Barbara County’s Medically Indigent Adult program.
An angel of a cardiologist thought the hospital was discharging me early and agreed to see me afterwards for $30 per office visit. So on top of the two days in the ICU and third in a monitoring ward, plus the CT, MRI, cardiac & kidney echo & bubble study, he helped me get the County to pay for a MIBG gamma scan just on the off chance I had a pheochromocytoma (I didn’t).
I got better, got a job that offered insurance, then moved to Simi and freelanced and found out I couldn’t get insurance on the private market because of my pre-existing condition. The fact that my BP was now controlled with cheap meds didn’t mean anything. Fortunately the ACA then passed and I was able to get insurance through PCIP and then through the same exchange plans we all have access to.
So yeah, I’m kind of pissed off today.
The biggest lie the religious right tells though is you can’t pray in public school. No, Engel says you can’t force prayer in school which is a good thing. I’m no longer religious but even I know that prayer is meant to be personal between an individual and their deity or deities. I certainly did pray when my Nana died when I was in high school. But I wouldn’t have wanted it forced on my classmates either.

Sports are seen as a place where American Virtues are to be celebrated, and some people are very picky about how they see those virtues celebrated…political protest is not part of what they find acceptable.

That separation not only protects the government from pernicious encroachment of religion, it prevents the government from squashing religious freedom of Churches. The best protection for a religion from the depredations of government is that wall of separation.

During the Republican Primary season, the publisher of my regional paper sent an E-mail to the readership that has Internet service asking if the newspaper was leaning too liberal in coverage? (Short answer, no. Longer answer, Bwahahahahah!)
I wrote a long thoughtful E-mail back noting Trump’s fascist rhetoric then, and also noted in fascist societies it’s usually newspaper publishers and journalists put up against a wall first.
He did not acknowledge my E-mail, but printed several short letters on the op-ed page claiming “yeah, the paper leans too liberal.”

It doesn’t have to be this way. America lets radio and TV broadcasters use public airwaves worth more than half a trillion dollars for free. In return, we require that broadcasters serve the public interest: devoting at least some airtime for worthy programs that inform voters, support local arts and culture and educate our children — in other words, that aspire to something beyond just minimizing costs and maximizing revenue.
Using the public airwaves is a privilege — a lucrative one — not a right, and I fear the F.C.C. has not done enough to stand up for the public interest. Our policies should reward broadcasters that honor their pledge to serve that interest and penalize those that don’t.
The F.C.C. already has powerful leverage to hold broadcasters to their end of the bargain. Every eight years, broadcasters must prove that they have served the public interest in order to get license renewal. If they can’t, the license goes to someone else who will. It’s a tough but fair system — if the commission does its job.

A law was passed under the apartheid-supporting W administration requiring withholding of funds or withdrawing from any UN organisation that recognised Palestine. We have been withholding funds from UNESCO ever since they seated Palestine and recognised them.
Withdrawal from UNESCO may be repugnant, but that is the law bigoted conservatives passed back then. Elections have always had consequences, which is why I have never knowingly voted for a conservative.
They were bigots when I was born, they are bigots now, they will be bigots long after I die.
But withdrawing from UNESCO is required by law. The alternative would be to get the GOP congress to repeal the law they passed.

The Women’s Convention set up by the organizers of this past winter’s march in Detroit. Sanders does have a pro choice record but they A) should have invited a woman especially a young one and B) He is patronizing on this issue.

If this was a lily white state that went for Trump overwhelmingly, we’d be helping it out now but nope.
And to clarify though I don’t think I need to, if this was a red state overwhelmingly white, I’d want to help it too. We should be helping out people in their time of need.

Yup, shouldn’t matter if it’s Texas, California, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or any other American land.
We’re Americans, we shouldn’t be trading aid on who voted for whom or what area of the nation the place is in.

So, I finished with the Baldwin and Buckley debate.
Buckley really is a great study in character speech mannerisms and body movements if you ever need to act like a pompous ass. I am now thinking many actors that have had such a role watched this debate.
And to sum up Buckley’s argument: Blacks are their own worst enemy.

My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS when he was 4 and later Asperger Syndrome. He’s 23 now.
Through the years we’ve had all kinds of health insurance plans via The Husband’s employers. But the last few years, the cost of adding the kid to our insurance made it stupid expensive. So we went on the exchanges, found a plan he could afford (he’s been working since HS graduation, either in training programs and now is working independent of any agency help. He works at same company as The Husband just a different location), and that’s what we used until his latest job which offers pretty decent insurance.
If these soulless, evil, sociopathic freaks have their way my son would never be insurable again. Unless he paid more than he makes for insurance. Autism would be all the reason the insurance companies would need to deny coverage. Never mind the kid is healthy, rarely gets sick, doesn’t smoke, drinks very rarely or even really engages in some of the risky behavior many of his peers do.
These assholes really get off on death and suffering. I wish Karma worked faster.
