The suspected victims included 28 children aged under 10, including 10 boys aged as young as 8. A further 63 were girls aged between 13 and 16 and nearly three-quarters of his alleged victims were under 18. Some 214 criminal offences were recorded, with 34 rapes having been reported across 28 police forces.

Pretty much I only use Twitter to retweet what gets posted here.
I use Facebook only because the relatives do, and I participate in a few closed groups that are mostly constructive and well managed.
Since I used Google tools I have a Youtube account by default but never use it. However, it seems like making videos people are willing to watch is a much more powerful form of communication than a Facebook entry or even a tweet (unless one has tens of millions of followers.) I don’t make Youtube vids, but it’s an option if I ever really wanted to get on a soapbox.

I read his BS rant and thought of my life journey. I went to college, got a job, got married, had a kid, got divorced, earned several post-graduate degrees, was never unemployed after completing undergraduate school, raised my child by myself after my divorce while buying a house, paying my taxes and all of my bills by myself, put my daughter through college, retired with a decent income, and did it all while being a black female. The special elections in Nov include one Senate seat and one House seat, both high profile, both in control of the Republican party. Discouragingly, neither seat looks to be in real danger for the Republicans. I’d like to think that the AL race will be close as Moore is so extreme. We’ll find out.
But Chaffetz’ seat - given how tightly the LDS and the GOP are in that state, even with a growing fraction of LDS who are a bit more progressive minded, it seems like a real uphill battle.
What I guess I’m saying is that I have little hope that the GOP will get the message it needs to hear at the national level.
Don’t know about the local level. Perhaps some state legislatures might feel some impact of Trumpism.

Now there’s a gun I’ve never shot. A bolt action .22 LR. Every .22 rifle I’ve shot were magazine-fed semi-autos. Hell, I own a Ruger .22 semi-auto LR.
I got a Ruger 10/22 Takedown when they first came out, fitted it with a nice wood stock and Bentz chambered barrel. Also have a bunch of Marlin 39a variants and a Browning SA 22 but don’t have a bolt action .22 yet. My Dad shot a 52C when he was a boy on his local shooting team, but regrettably he sold his when he was a young man. The same shop has another 52C that I really like with a JW Fecker 20X scope. Both have Karl Kenyon triggers.
Optics have come a long way, those old scopes are so ridiculously long and thin that they barely pass any light at all. I might make an offer on it instead but I’m afraid I’d have to shine klieg lights on the target.

Driver had forgot to set the parking brake when he hit the head and the van had rolled downhill about 1/4 mile before it crashed into the Mess Hall supply tent me and this other guy were bunking in. I got off easy, with just heavy bruising down the whole left side of my body. The other guy got hit with some other debris and ended up with some broken ribs and a internal puncture, kidney or liver, I forget which. He ended up having to stay there for an extra 3-4 months because it was too dangerous to fly him back to NC with his injuries.

I rarely remember the full auto stuff that much any more. But I was seriously annoyed the other day when visiting a local gunshop to find that the guy before me had bought the Parker VH Special Twist (aka “damascas” barrels - only safe for black powder) double barrel shotgun that he had for only $300. I’d have had to hand load 12 gauge 2 1/2” black powder shot shells for it but damn it would have been fun chasing pheasant & grouse with that pre 1900 beauty.
I have a Henry because as an actual Texas farmer/rancher I am required to own a lever action rifle. It’s in the Official Regulations of Redneck somewhere. The Henry fits the bill even though it was made in NEW YORK CITY (Brooklyn in fact). They have since moved to Bayonne New Jersey, which is still part of the United States even though New Yorkers do not believe this.
I will probably be fined or jailed if the Redneck Regulators find out I don’t have a Stetson hat though.

The shotguns we had when I was in security forces were still pump action, but they also had bayonet lugs, which we trained with during CQB training. Back in the day, there was practically no one who could beat me when we trained with bayonet fighting
Most fun I ever had in training was when we practiced clearing bunkers and trenchlines.
Machine gun sections would set up a base of fire. The assault teams would move in under smoke and hit the end of the line. I would be in the lead with a M249, with my A-gunner, who carried a 15’ pole with a flag on the end, followed by 2 other guys with a bunch of grenades, then the rest of the platoon.
Now the MG sections were told to fire about 15-20ft ahead of where ever they saw that flag. Between me and the Agunner, we carried about 8 drums of ammo, 250 rounds per drum, and we would advance along the trenchlines, rounds impacting ahead of us from the machine gun section as I would advance firing 3-5 round bursts taking out any targets that presented themselves. If we came across a bunker or firing position, we’d signal for a grenade, they would step around and toss one in, we’d wait for it to blow, spray the position with fire, then keep moving, as fire teams from the rest of the platoon would file in to seize and clear the positions. As the gunner, I had to remain focussed ahead, so my Agunner would keep a hand on my harness to pull me up short if we needed to slow down or fallback.
I also had a tendency to start braying like a Tusken Raider during assaults, so there was that as well.
In nearly gun-free Australia I once got to fire a pistol champion’s .38 with a reflex sight.
It was amazing. Way too enjoyable.

In keeping with the ongoing discussions about Facebook and Twitter and their stances on what their platforms do when they are used for things like personal attacks and threats and being used to interfere in elections I thought some might like to see this if you haven’t already.
Ari Melber seems to have decided that Facebook needs some coverage and he has been tough on them.
This video gets into Facebook’s cheap excuse that they are not responsible for any of it because they are not a media company.
One of Ari’s guests said that claiming you are not media is odd when Facebook initially claimed they were the replacement for old media.
I just see them as protective and irresponsible in that they may have had good intentions but it is clear they never thought of the negative uses and now don’t want to admit it. And they don’t want to do anything because that may take a lot of tweaking of their platform and maybe a lot of hiring to have people monitor what is going on.

The GOP simply refuses to understand how insurance works as a concept or in reality. They are purposefully lying about how it works, and what the consequences of splitting out the sick people from the general population and what it does for everyone.
For those in high risk pool, their costs will absolutely skyrocket. For others, they’ll see some reduction at least until they end up in the high risk pool because no one knows when they’ll get cancer or any other preexisting condition that will cause them to shift into the high risk pool.
GOP refuses to address how insurance actuaries compute risk, costs, and premiums, and that with a sufficiently large pool, they can estimate the costs and determine the premiums across the pool.
But the more immediate issue is that the CSR EO is illegal on its face - Trump has no grounds on which he can withhold or reduce payment. The law is absolutely clear - the CSR must be paid (shall be). This is basic legal interpretation of law. If the law said may be paid, then Trump could have grounds to withhold some or all. But the mandatory requirement means that any lawsuit challenging Trump would win on its face.
The outcome would be restoring those funds, but Trump’s sabotage will have caused a premium spike anyways. The GOP applause for this should be recorded and included on every Democrats’ ad campaigns for the 2018 midterms, and all the special elections being held this year.
Well, with Dotard’s latest attempts to sabotage the ACA, he will now actually hurt his own poor white trash base.

Fewer and fewer Americans serve in the US Armed Forces, so the pool of veterans is shrinking. Even with the GWOT, fewer Americans have served in combat. So the notion that serving in the military is a stepping stone to political office is falling by the wayside.

I noticed that awhile ago. The last WWII vet to run was Bob Dole in 1996, 51 years after the war ended. Men who served in some active theater of WWII at least a bit won six consecutive Presidential elections from ‘52-72, and got a seventh in ‘88. In 2020 it will have been 47 years since the US got out of Vietnam, and GHW Bush was the last war veteran to win a presidential election. Most voters just don’t seem to care whether a candidate served or not anymore.
Part of it being how easily all three got smeared in spite (and in Kerry and McCain’s cases, because) of their service by opponents further to their right who didn’t really serve at all, and part because Vietnam is still kind of seen as a black mark on our history the way WWII wasn’t. You know how much America loves our winners.

My high school had a shooting range and every year around thanksgiving they did a “turkey shoot”. Anyone could go down to the range, you got ten rounds and a bolt action .22 rifle and they would give away a bunch of turkeys to the people who scored best.

There was the story from a few days ago about how most of the people in the government, including a number of Trump’s cabinet, don’t want the US to withdraw. So, this, not withdrawing but allowing Trump to talk about how bad it is for the US, is probably the solution they came up with. According to the story, Trump has been furious that he cannot pull out of it: dailykos.com:

It is similar to marihuana research. It has long been cut off here, though many other nations conduct such research. The issue is that it is improperly classified as a Schedule I drug (no medical value, high potential for abuse, no accepted safety standard for medical use), from the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (thanks, Richard Nixon).
Of note, cocaine is Schedule II. My epilepsy drug moves around from Schedule IV to Schedule II, depending on the whims of the FDA.

Not really. It is because in the 70s people freaked out about drugs and tossed a lot of them into the schedule 1 category as defined by the DEA. A lot of it was Nixon.
When on that list I believe they were not even allowed to be researched by the medical and pharma industries.
It was the street use that may have given some clue to people they were not as dangerous as thought and may have some benefits.
I am not sure if it was Obama, but there apparently was a relaxing for researchers to look into the benefits they offer.
I’ve read where psychedelics like LSD and what GGT is commenting on may be very beneficial to depression sufferers, Alzheimer’s patients, PTSD victims and Traumatic Brain Injury recovery.
We’ve already heard about all the benefits from Marijuana research for all kinds of ailments like pain reducing/redirection, appetite benefits for chemo patients, etc.
It was panic by politicians that shut down the research.
What always surprised me was many of these drugs come from Mother Nature/God and early civilizations used them, so in a way for the religious…God put them here for a reason. Of course they need to be controlled, regulated and need education, etc.
Also, we have more problems with many accepted pharmaceuticals but that gets ignored because politics and business.

Coming out of college in debt, adding additional debt to buy a home (if even possible) and then growing older still in debt only to run into health issues to add even more debt.
We came to the conclusion it is intended because it keeps everyone working for the banks, under control as far as behavior because you can’t be risky and then when you die they take what is left.

IOW, its just a way to get Trump out of having to certify the deal every ninety days. Aristocracy and monarchy compelled obedience through religion and the belief in the divine right. Dictatorships compel obedience through a monopoly on force. America now compels obedience through a modified religious method - worship of the rich and belief in their moral superiority.
From an academic point of view, some measure of compulsion has always been necessary because control of the means of production has always depended on control of the populace. This is the core idea behind Marxism (revolution to reclaim control of the means of production) and also the reason why Randian Objectivism is such a ludicrous fantasy (rich people don’t exist in a vacuum). I wonder, though, what will happen as automation becomes more prevalent and the means of production really doesn’t depend on a population any more. What happens as the rich realise that they don’t need other humans any more and that they only cost money to control?

However, sometimes a certain degree of optimism is required as part of a job (e.g., a project planner requires a certain level of professional optimism just to get the job done). The US political process is presently like this for sane people. Despair lets evil win, so some level of optimism is required just to mount a resistance.

This is hardly over, Trump is below the crazification factor in polling, and voters are deeply R districts are the ones becoming disillusioned as their candidate and Congress is failing to deliver on any promises.
There are elections for VA and NJ governor and the VA House of Delegates this year. Next year’s election is coming in on a whole slew of Democratic wins in Republican districts.
The press isn’t covering that well, as local elections are not of much interest to those in other states, but momentum is there (see also the March for Science and the Women’s March on Washington).
This is not “unbridled optimism.” The local and state elections are examples of Democrats being motivated and Republicans being disillusioned.
In Iowa and Nebraska, two Republican state senators have abandoned the Republican Party and became Libertarians. The LP is gearing up to challenge Republicans in many local elections across the nation (that will draw off conservative voters from the Republicans).
Things aren’t as bad as it seems… .

Agnew was forced out of office on Maryland state charges.
As it turns out, Pence is under pressure in Indiana for using his and his wife’s AOL accounts to avoid reporting for state business.
Remember, back when there was an apparently insignificant hotel burglary in 1972, it took over two years for the Nixon Administration to come to an end. Then we only got reports in the morning or evening newspapers and the evening television news, and even then it seemed like the country was going to fly apart to me. It didn’t.
Now we have the Internet parsing and mulling over every tidbit and rumour that comes out about what might or might not be happening.
Patience. While technology has accelerated news reporting and rumours (and there were rumours in the Seventies as well), investigations and the justice system take the same amount of time.
