MOTHERFUCKER

President Donald Trump plans to cut off critical subsidy payments to insurers selling Obamacare coverage, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The decision to end the payments, worth an estimated $7 billion this year, marks Trump’s most aggressive move yet to dismantle Obamacare after months of failed GOP repeal efforts on Capitol Hill. The move is likely to draw lawsuits and may put pressure on Congress to appropriate funding for the subsidies, which help insurers reduce out-of-pocket costs for low-income Obamacare customers.

I really hope that t**** gets bothered enough by his negative press coverage to pick up psychosomatic ailments that are both painful and debilitating.

Republicans are all evil, and t**** is one of the very worst specimens of that whole vile order. t****’s flaws start by embodying all seven deadly sins, and compound from there with a wide assortment of major personality disorders which, minimally, include sociopathy and narcissism, both malignant.

As if that weren’t enough, t****’s entire life has been dedicated to gratifying all of his basest impulses. If it turned out that he had been a serial killer with dozens of victims per year for decades, using his wealth and power to find easy victims and to make the bodies disappear, all we could do would be to note that it was perfectly in character.

40 seconds and all those people killed and shot. Let that sink in.

The hotel’s version of events is not even remotely plausible. An audio analysis put the average rate of fire at 9 rounds a second, times 40 seconds that’s 360 bullets fired. Yet the total number of people injured and killed was almost 600, many hit multiple times. An indeterminate number of rounds also had to have struck nobody because the dude was just spraying the field from 400 yards away.

From what I can tell, this is just an EO that starts a process.

Reports are saying he is just playing to the cameras and his base with the signing.

Chris Matthews had one of his panel say a lot of the EO signings he has signed have not even been looked at since the signing and no implementation.

They also said this was done to make Donny feel good as if he is doing something about that Obamacare.

Also, some are saying there will be court challenges from states, health industry people like hospitals and even some insurance companies. It appears there is a lot to do to make it legislature if they ever get to that point.

So, I guess the fight is still on and we citizens need to keep riding Congress’ backs. For sure it is all fucked up.

Says it in the article:

In the wake of revelations about Harvey Weinstein’s alleged years-long sexual harassment and assault, a producer of one of Amazon Studios’ highest-profile TV shows is ready to talk about her “shocking and surreal” experience with Amazon’s programming chief Roy Price.

Isa Hackett is the daughter of author Philip K. Dick, whose work is the basis for Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle, as well as the upcoming anthology series, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. Hackett, 50, is an executive producer on both series. Price, 51, is head of Amazon Studios and has presided over its growth into a major streaming service with such series as Transparent and movies such as Manchester by the Sea. His family has deep connections in the entertainment world: His father, Frank, ran Columbia Pictures and Universal Studios. (The existence of the alleged incident detailed below and the subsequent Amazon investigation were previously reported by the website The Information.)

Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines  Oct 12, 2017 • 7:46:33pm

The notorious perv Oliver mentions, Jimmy Savile, pretty well got off free during his lifetime. There were many rumors but the lack of hard proof, official apathy (if not outright collusion), and the UK’s draconian libel laws combined to conceal the crimes and prevent effective action.

He had only been dead a few days, though, when an avalanche of allegations, dating back to the 1950s, started coming in. This led to a massive police investigation, Operation Yewtree, that substantiated many of the allegations and found much evidence of malfeasance and cover-up by officials at the BBC, the NHS, and other places associated with Savile..

In January 2013, a joint report by the NSPCC and Metropolitan Police, Giving Victims a Voice, stated that 450 people had made complaints against Savile, with the period of alleged abuse stretching from 1955 to 2009 and the ages of the complainants at the time of the assaults ranging from 8 to 47. The suspected victims included 28 children aged under 10, including 10 boys aged as young as 8. A further 63 were girls aged between 13 and 16 and nearly three-quarters of his alleged victims were under 18. Some 214 criminal offences were recorded, with 34 rapes having been reported across 28 police forces.

There was also this:

Broadmoor [Hospital, where Savile was a director] staff members also claimed that Savile had told them that he engaged in necrophiliac acts with corpses in their mortuary in Leeds; Savile was friends with the chief mortician, who gave him near-unrestricted access.

I remember seeing Savile on TV when I was in the UK in the 70s and later, you almost couldn’t turn the box on without seeing him. He actually struck me as kind of creepy but I dismissed that as one of the British eccentricities about which I had still not learned, despite being born there.

A Chaplain is a specialist officer of the Adeptus Astartes and serves as the appointed spiritual leader of a Space Marine Chapter. Chaplains are the warrior-priests that minister to the spiritual well-being of their fellow Battle-Brothers, instilling in them the values and beliefs of the Chapter and promote the veneration or in rarer cases the actual worship of the Emperor of Mankind. Chaplains lead from the front as awe-inspiring warrior-priests, fighting wherever the foe is most fierce, leading their brethren and praising the Emperor through the destruction of His enemies. Rejoicing in the glorious act of war, Chaplains exhort their Battle-Brothers to ever greater deeds of bravery and devotion.

I had the same thought. This reads like an angry rant by someone who’s been dumped.

Yes, in support of Rose McGowan, who was suspended because she allegedly tweeted a telephone number. However, other people have reported their numbers were posted by harassers and Twitter did nothing.

More from Teen Vogue: teenvogue.com

ETA: McGowan has been reinstated, but people are righteously pissed off and want to stop Tweeting tomorrow (starting 12 a.m. ET) in protest.

Never going to matter.

Twitter lives off of a million busy thumbs around the world at any moment, all trying to make a name for themselves by commenting on whatever they’re being entertained with at any moment, be that a TV show, a sports event, or salacious gossip.

The only real way to get back at twitter is to delete your account.

It’s occurred to me that we will probably not have a Vietnam veteran serve as President of the United States, unless some current unknown can run in 2020 or, at the outside, ‘24.

Three have run, Gore, Kerry, and McCain, and all three lost.

Maybe I should run. I seem to be a billion or more short of the required funds, though and I am not popular with Koch-heads and other evil types.

Pretty much I only use Twitter to retweet what gets posted here.

I use Facebook only because the relatives do, and I participate in a few closed groups that are mostly constructive and well managed.

Since I used Google tools I have a Youtube account by default but never use it. However, it seems like making videos people are willing to watch is a much more powerful form of communication than a Facebook entry or even a tweet (unless one has tens of millions of followers.) I don’t make Youtube vids, but it’s an option if I ever really wanted to get on a soapbox.

His crimes continued right into the 21st century, the latest uncovered by Operation Yewtree was in 2009. The evidence was there much earlier and many, many others were prosecuted for the same categories of crime during those periods. It was common knowledge in celebrity circles, though few knew the real extent. The bastards covered for him because he was famous and brought in a lot of money.

Young actresses are disposable.

I read his BS rant and thought of my life journey. I went to college, got a job, got married, had a kid, got divorced, earned several post-graduate degrees, was never unemployed after completing undergraduate school, raised my child by myself after my divorce while buying a house, paying my taxes and all of my bills by myself, put my daughter through college, retired with a decent income, and did it all while being a black female. As to his comment about men “wanting” older women, he doesn’t know sh*t about sh*t because I’ve had a guy who has been trying to get a date with me for four years, and he’s a medical doctor. I’ve told him why I’m hesitant to date anyone, but he persists, says he’s willing to wait. Chuck C. Johnson should keep his opinions to himself because when he shares them, there are always women like me who don’t fit the stereotypes he carries in his addled, misogynistic brain. The special elections in Nov include one Senate seat and one House seat, both high profile, both in control of the Republican party. Discouragingly, neither seat looks to be in real danger for the Republicans. I’d like to think that the AL race will be close as Moore is so extreme. We’ll find out.

But Chaffetz’ seat - given how tightly the LDS and the GOP are in that state, even with a growing fraction of LDS who are a bit more progressive minded, it seems like a real uphill battle.

What I guess I’m saying is that I have little hope that the GOP will get the message it needs to hear at the national level.

Don’t know about the local level. Perhaps some state legislatures might feel some impact of Trumpism.

This really ticks me off. It gives RepubliKKKlans in Congress another angle of attacking Federal employees!

A veteran doctor who’s worked on humanitarian missions in ten countries affected by disaster quit abruptly after allegedly witnessing federal disaster relief staffers in Puerto Rico bring in citizens to provide them with a “spa day” on the taxpayers dime.

The doctor spoke with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and provided images and descriptions of what she saw, as well as her resignation letter.

According to the doctor, the disaster relief employees “used the triage tents that are supposed to be for medical care and instead brought in local Puerto Rican residents to give the medical workers cut-rate manicures and pedicures,” all while on the clock.

And Jesus said, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19:19Honor thy father and mother; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 19:20The young man saith unto him, All these things have I observed: what lack I yet? 19:21Jesus said unto him, If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that which thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 19:22But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sorrowful; for he was one that had great possessions.

19:23And Jesus said unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. 19:24And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

It is not going to take down Twitter, but that’s not even the goal from what I’ve seen.

I wish we were a general strike aged nation state but we’re not.

If Rose McGowen and other silenced victims feel empowered that’s good for this here action.

No new tweets and retweets is what it looks like for the boycott specs. Easy peasy.

Also, I’ve seen folks able to speak up immediately and reach an audience with this tool and that isn’t bad. I’ve seen important stories unfold in damn near real time with the usual access impediments and delays getting crushed. Momentum can be powerful as shit! This tool, like many, needs to be regulated. That’s not a foreign concept for people on the sane part of the political spectrum.

Even if this is just a trial run, I applaud folks for not letting the easy contrary view take over every time. Try something and build from there.

Speaking of federal buildings, it’s quite odd how, many months after their being sworn in, pics of the prez and vice prez are still not displayed in federal buildings. I live half a block from the federal buildings in Manhattan, and still no sign of those attention whores. intentional or just typical Trump laziness?

Anyway, nighty night all. Take me out Bobby…

A couple of interesting new papers in Current Biology shed light on human evolution. This one I find most fascinating:

40,000-Year-Old Individual from Asia Provides Insight into Early Population Structure in Eurasia

Lots of interesting discussion, including this:

[…] The fact that the Tianyuan individual, who lived in mainland Asia about 40,000 years ago, has affinities to some South American populations that is as strong as or stronger than that observed for the Papuan and Onge suggests that a population related to the Tianyuan individual, as well as to the present-day Papuan and Onge, was once widespread in eastern Asia. This group or another Asian population related to this group persisted at least until the colonization of the Americas and contributed to the genomes of some Native American populations.

[…]

We find that that the Tianyuan individual is not from a population that is directly ancestral to any group of present-day East or Southeast Asians (c > 0, c = 0 rejected with p < 0.00001 for every comparison in Table 1), but rather belonged to a population that diverged from the population that contributed to present-day East and Southeast Asians. This is consistent with his unique ties to the 35,000-year-old [and found in Belgium] GoyetQ116-1 and to some South American populations, which are not observed in present-day East and Southeast Asians.

[…]

The Tianyuan genome, as well as the genomes of individuals that lived at a similar time in Europe, shows that Asian and European populations had already begun to diverge at least by 40,000 years ago. At that time, modern human populations in Eurasia were subdivided not only into populations ancestral to present-day Asians and Europeans, but also into populations that did not contribute detectably to present-day populations. The shared ancestry between the Tianyuan individual and a 35,000-year-old individual in Europe and present-day Native American groups in South America further highlights that both substructure and population contacts have characterized the population history in Eurasia.

It takes a bit of background to read the whole paper, but the gist can be had readily.

Substantially, it is beginning to look like the Eurasian population of modern humans was pretty complex even by 40kya, and remained that way. Also that there were inhabitants of Europe that were more closely related to some of these ancient Eurasian populations than the later European populations.

I got a Ruger 10/22 Takedown when they first came out, fitted it with a nice wood stock and Bentz chambered barrel. Also have a bunch of Marlin 39a variants and a Browning SA 22 but don’t have a bolt action .22 yet. My Dad shot a 52C when he was a boy on his local shooting team, but regrettably he sold his when he was a young man. The same shop has another 52C that I really like with a JW Fecker 20X scope. Both have Karl Kenyon triggers.

Optics have come a long way, those old scopes are so ridiculously long and thin that they barely pass any light at all. I might make an offer on it instead but I’m afraid I’d have to shine klieg lights on the target.

The Yelp reviews for Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms are hilarious.

Have you ever heard the saying, “it could always be worse?”
29 Palms is the only exception.

Do you enjoy…
- waking up in a full body sweat
- being close to nothing
- an endless supply of sketchy people out and about during the night
- a brown, sandy, dusty scenery that lasts year round

If you are a military family, this place will…
- steal your souls
- destroy your family
- make your kids wish they could go back to where the came from, and eventually resent their parents
- make you resent yourself and the Marine corps for putting your family through such a horrible duty station

This place is about as horrible as it gets.
- If you are in the military and were stationed here on your first enlistment, I feel for you; been there, done that.
- If you requested to be stationed here, you deserve what’s coming for you. I don’t know how you can look in the mirror at your stupid self.
- if you are a spouse, who’s husband dragged to you down to this hell-hole, my heart goes out to you. Hang in there, and don’t cheat! There’s no excuse for that sort of thing.
- if you are a 29 palms local (aborigine) of your own free will… There’s no hope for you. Stay where you are, and under no circumstance, reproduce!

I’m obviously kidding, but 29 Palms sucks.

Best part was the MPs coming around to check out the crash.
“GET BACK TO YOUR TENT!”
“That was my tent.”

Driver had forgot to set the parking brake when he hit the head and the van had rolled downhill about 1/4 mile before it crashed into the Mess Hall supply tent me and this other guy were bunking in. I got off easy, with just heavy bruising down the whole left side of my body. The other guy got hit with some other debris and ended up with some broken ribs and a internal puncture, kidney or liver, I forget which. He ended up having to stay there for an extra 3-4 months because it was too dangerous to fly him back to NC with his injuries.

Let’s see…
Not counting demolitions HE…
105mm rifled canon
60 mm mortar
M-2
M-85
M-240
M-60
M249
M-16a1, a2, a3
AK47 & AK74 - US Army owned so full auto
SKS
M1 Carbine
Sporterized Arisaka Type 99 (7.7x58. I use this as my deer rifle)
Rossi 94
numerous revolvers, mostly colt or S&W, .38S&W, .38 Spl, .357 mag, .45 LC
numerous semiauto pistols - standouts, C96 Mauser,Glock 19, m1911, Tokarev, Mauser HSc
More sporting rifles and shotguns than I can count.

Probably more that I’ve forgotten. Been a gun nut for too long.

I rarely remember the full auto stuff that much any more. But I was seriously annoyed the other day when visiting a local gunshop to find that the guy before me had bought the Parker VH Special Twist (aka “damascas” barrels - only safe for black powder) double barrel shotgun that he had for only $300. I’d have had to hand load 12 gauge 2 1/2” black powder shot shells for it but damn it would have been fun chasing pheasant & grouse with that pre 1900 beauty.

I have a Henry because as an actual Texas farmer/rancher I am required to own a lever action rifle. It’s in the Official Regulations of Redneck somewhere. The Henry fits the bill even though it was made in NEW YORK CITY (Brooklyn in fact). They have since moved to Bayonne New Jersey, which is still part of the United States even though New Yorkers do not believe this.
I will probably be fined or jailed if the Redneck Regulators find out I don’t have a Stetson hat though.

So weird how I’ve never actually fired a lever action rifle or shotgun. So weird, now that I think about it.

The shotguns we had when I was in security forces were still pump action, but they also had bayonet lugs, which we trained with during CQB training. Back in the day, there was practically no one who could beat me when we trained with bayonet fighting

237
Kragar  Oct 13, 2017 • 2:27:13am

Most fun I ever had in training was when we practiced clearing bunkers and trenchlines.

Machine gun sections would set up a base of fire. The assault teams would move in under smoke and hit the end of the line. I would be in the lead with a M249, with my A-gunner, who carried a 15’ pole with a flag on the end, followed by 2 other guys with a bunch of grenades, then the rest of the platoon.

Now the MG sections were told to fire about 15-20ft ahead of where ever they saw that flag. Between me and the Agunner, we carried about 8 drums of ammo, 250 rounds per drum, and we would advance along the trenchlines, rounds impacting ahead of us from the machine gun section as I would advance firing 3-5 round bursts taking out any targets that presented themselves. If we came across a bunker or firing position, we’d signal for a grenade, they would step around and toss one in, we’d wait for it to blow, spray the position with fire, then keep moving, as fire teams from the rest of the platoon would file in to seize and clear the positions. As the gunner, I had to remain focussed ahead, so my Agunner would keep a hand on my harness to pull me up short if we needed to slow down or fallback.

238
Kragar  Oct 13, 2017 • 2:30:59am

I also had a tendency to start braying like a Tusken Raider during assaults, so there was that as well.

Guilty. I’ve fired a Purdey double rifle, .375 H&H. It shoots like any other big game rifle, accurate and balanced though very heavy on the recoil. It is a thing of beauty, really an art object, and carries a stratospheric price.
There is a market, though, and they are still very much in business. James and Purdey and Sons.

I put a modification of my post above about my political future to my county Democratic party chair and treasurer. (We finally have new ones who are more interested in being active than the two octogenarians who were in charge of our county party for decades. Let’s see how they respond.)

Get a load of this wingnut from California (allegedly) on Sen. Ben Sasse’s statement. (He is not a “career politician,” this is the first political position he’s held, and he is a freshman senator. There are also people commenting on the string who do not understand how Senate traditions work: Freshmen senators usually get little to no say about what their party is doing in the Senate.)

You’d know better than I how his home state views Sen. Sasse, but for a guy who won his election by a 2-1 margin, how likely is he to fall victim to a “primary” attack by Trump-cultists? Especially since he isn’t up for reelection until 2020?

He’s not, particularly from out-of-state Trump cultists.

While the state overwhelmingly went for Trump in 2016, there are none of the wingnut protests supporting Trump here.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump sabotaged Obamacare last night, carrying through on his threat to destroy CSRs and thereby hiking premiums for millions on Obamacare and making it harder for millions to get health coverage.

All Trump has done about this is lie, and the GOP gladly gives the addled reactionary know nothing cover to continue his assault on the Constitution and federal law.

Why do I mention that latter bit? Because Trump’s EO likely broke another federal law in the process, this one dealing with ERISA.

The GOP will continue to rubber stamp Trump while he guts functioning government because it ultimately means sweet tax cuts as GOP claims govt failing shouldn’t be funded.

Meanwhile, the daily PR update shows that millions remain without power and water on the Island, and Trump tries to claim that FEMA will be there until the end of recovery, but the problem is the initial effort to get power restored is so fucked up it’s going to take months more than if FEMA and the federal govt fully mobilized to get power grid restored/rebuilt.

But Chaffetz’ seat - given how tightly the LDS and the GOP are in that state, even with a growing fraction of LDS who are a bit more progressive minded, it seems like a real uphill battle.

Not (currently) a resident of Utah, but I am aware that Utah is so gerrymandered to dilute Democratic representation. You have to keep in mind that the current mayor of Salt Lake City proper is an woman in a same-sex marriage. But the way the northern half of the Salt Lake valley has been carved up, you’d never know it.

Remember when Chaffetz claimed that a town hall meeting was invaded by “outsiders”? They weren’t outsiders—they were residents of more Democratic small cities in the Salt Lake Valley—like Holladay.

But the chances of a Dem getting Chaffetz’ seat are ZERO. I just looked at the map and the 3rd District covers Provo-Orem. It’s not happening unless (joke alert) someone puts LSD in the water or something.

Quite true: I also looked at the Utah district maps back when Chaffetz was griping about the heat he was getting back home over healthcare: it looks like almost all the Congressional Districts in the state are drawn to include a small section of “urbanized” area, “balanced” by vast tracts of the American Outback. Probably computer-calculated down to the last .01% to preserve GOP control….

Morning.

In keeping with the ongoing discussions about Facebook and Twitter and their stances on what their platforms do when they are used for things like personal attacks and threats and being used to interfere in elections I thought some might like to see this if you haven’t already.

Ari Melber seems to have decided that Facebook needs some coverage and he has been tough on them.

This video gets into Facebook’s cheap excuse that they are not responsible for any of it because they are not a media company.

One of Ari’s guests said that claiming you are not media is odd when Facebook initially claimed they were the replacement for old media.

I just see them as protective and irresponsible in that they may have had good intentions but it is clear they never thought of the negative uses and now don’t want to admit it. And they don’t want to do anything because that may take a lot of tweaking of their platform and maybe a lot of hiring to have people monitor what is going on.

For others on the Trump train, when they lose their health insurance, it’ll be their version of wearing a hair shirt; they’ll gladly suffer in defense of the conservative “faith”, as long as people that are not like them suffer even more.

Funny thing is they will suffer the most. Low income people whose insurance is subsidized or who qualify for Medicaid are protected, especially those in urban areas which provide a large customer base. Rural areas and people who make too much to qualify for subsidies will suffer the most; IOW, Trump voters.

That depends. In a lot of rural areas veterans live in great quantities, because retired pay or disability is too low to live in expensive cities. (For example, more than half my town is either veterans, spouses, or dependent children.)

For those drawing retired pay they still have access to military facilities, for the disabled access to VA facilities. Both have Tricare/CHAMPUS for spouses and dependants.

Yeah, supposedly Trump was grumping around after Kelly addressed the press. They say anytime someone, like Kelly yesterday, gets comment like “he seems measured and under control” or worse “Kelly is presidential”…the thin skinned one feels undercut and overlooked and then huffs and puffs about it.

Funny thing, Trump probably sent him out to make the address to cover for the moron and nuke comments.

I love the way some of the political talking heads yesterday called Kelly’s address a forced statement by a hostage.

Most people, though, aren’t veterans.

And then throw in the damage being done to children. With CHIP currently running out of money due to Republican inaction, that’s going to add to the problems in rural areas.

re: #293 Barefoot Grin

Right. Won’t it be easy to make a “young and healthy” group and an “old and/or pre-existing conditions” group and charge them differently?

The GOP simply refuses to understand how insurance works as a concept or in reality. They are purposefully lying about how it works, and what the consequences of splitting out the sick people from the general population and what it does for everyone.

For those in high risk pool, their costs will absolutely skyrocket. For others, they’ll see some reduction at least until they end up in the high risk pool because no one knows when they’ll get cancer or any other preexisting condition that will cause them to shift into the high risk pool.

GOP refuses to address how insurance actuaries compute risk, costs, and premiums, and that with a sufficiently large pool, they can estimate the costs and determine the premiums across the pool.

But the more immediate issue is that the CSR EO is illegal on its face - Trump has no grounds on which he can withhold or reduce payment. The law is absolutely clear - the CSR must be paid (shall be). This is basic legal interpretation of law. If the law said may be paid, then Trump could have grounds to withhold some or all. But the mandatory requirement means that any lawsuit challenging Trump would win on its face.

The outcome would be restoring those funds, but Trump’s sabotage will have caused a premium spike anyways. The GOP applause for this should be recorded and included on every Democrats’ ad campaigns for the 2018 midterms, and all the special elections being held this year.

Anyway, we sometimes have a music Friday so why not now? This one is loud and noisy a good way to get the blood flowing.

So, in honor of some comments about Rage Furby from late last night posted in this thread I give you “When Yer Twenty Two” by the Flaming Lips.

The Flaming Lips When Yer Twenty Two

Stuck in the perpetual motion
Dying against the machine
The whole thing leaves
You a nothing instead of a these
The sun is black and the black halos fly
And your number is backwards again when you try
The sound is so cute when you’re 22
When you’re 22

Eggs break when you walk on the scramble
You’re living against the machine
The whole thing leaves
You a nothing instead of a these
The bone is cracked and the cracked eggshells fly
And your number is backwards again when you drive
The whole thing’s removed when you’re 22
When you’re 22

It’s occurred to me that we will probably not have a Vietnam veteran serve as President of the United States, unless some current unknown can run in 2020 or, at the outside, ‘24.

Three have run, Gore, Kerry, and McCain, and all three lost.

Maybe I should run. I seem to be a billion or more short of the required funds, though and I am not popular with Koch-heads and other evil types.

I noticed that awhile ago. The last WWII vet to run was Bob Dole in 1996, 51 years after the war ended. Men who served in some active theater of WWII at least a bit won six consecutive Presidential elections from ‘52-72, and got a seventh in ‘88. In 2020 it will have been 47 years since the US got out of Vietnam, and GHW Bush was the last war veteran to win a presidential election. Most voters just don’t seem to care whether a candidate served or not anymore.

Fewer and fewer Americans serve in the US Armed Forces, so the pool of veterans is shrinking. Even with the GWOT, fewer Americans have served in combat. So the notion that serving in the military is a stepping stone to political office is falling by the wayside.

Part of it being how easily all three got smeared in spite (and in Kerry and McCain’s cases, because) of their service by opponents further to their right who didn’t really serve at all, and part because Vietnam is still kind of seen as a black mark on our history the way WWII wasn’t. There was the story from a few days ago about how most of the people in the government, including a number of Trump’s cabinet, don’t want the US to withdraw. So, this, not withdrawing but allowing Trump to talk about how bad it is for the US, is probably the solution they came up with. According to the story, Trump has been furious that he cannot pull out of it: dailykos.com:

[Trump] was incensed by the arguments of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and others that the landmark 2015 deal, while flawed, offered stability and other benefits. He did not want to certify to Congress that the agreement remained in the vital U.S. national security interest and that Iran was meeting its obligations. He did not think either was true.

“He threw a fit,” said one person familiar with the meeting. “… He was furious. Really furious. It’s clear he felt jammed.”

It is similar to marihuana research. It has long been cut off here, though many other nations conduct such research. The issue is that it is improperly classified as a Schedule I drug (no medical value, high potential for abuse, no accepted safety standard for medical use), from the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (thanks, Richard Nixon).

Of note, cocaine is Schedule II. My epilepsy drug moves around from Schedule IV to Schedule II, depending on the whims of the FDA.

re: #359 Anymouse 🌹

Because anecdotal evidence from street drug users is not scientific research.

Certain street drugs are being allowed now for laboratory-controlled experimentation to find exactly how they work and what they do.

Rounding up a thousand magic mushroom users and asking them in a survey how often they took it, what dose, what was the effects, &c is not research.

Not really. It is because in the 70s people freaked out about drugs and tossed a lot of them into the schedule 1 category as defined by the DEA. A lot of it was Nixon.

When on that list I believe they were not even allowed to be researched by the medical and pharma industries.

It was the street use that may have given some clue to people they were not as dangerous as thought and may have some benefits.

I am not sure if it was Obama, but there apparently was a relaxing for researchers to look into the benefits they offer.

I’ve read where psychedelics like LSD and what GGT is commenting on may be very beneficial to depression sufferers, Alzheimer’s patients, PTSD victims and Traumatic Brain Injury recovery.

We’ve already heard about all the benefits from Marijuana research for all kinds of ailments like pain reducing/redirection, appetite benefits for chemo patients, etc.

It was panic by politicians that shut down the research.

What always surprised me was many of these drugs come from Mother Nature/God and early civilizations used them, so in a way for the religious…God put them here for a reason. Of course they need to be controlled, regulated and need education, etc.

Also, we have more problems with many accepted pharmaceuticals but that gets ignored because politics and business.

Here is a link to the DEA schedules.

Yes, I watched that. I’m glad someone is on it. Eric Garland has been riding the issue hard on his Twitter feed, calling out both FB and Twitter.

It pisses me off that both Facebook and Twitter have deleted what amounts to evidence in this case. There had better be some real-world consequences for that shit. It better hurt, and paying a fine won’t cut it.

Rep. Mark Walker (N.C.), who leads the Republican Study Committee, also voted against the legislation due to the lack of offsets.

A good chunk of those GOP reps are in areas that are affected by tropical cyclones.

All of Florida’s reps voted for it, since it included Hurricane Irma aid (in other words, it affected their districts personally).

Compassionate conservatism.

To his credit, my wingnut representative (Adrian Smith, NE-3) voted in favour of both aid packages.

Basically, by not certifying Iran deal is in US National Interest congress needs topass legislation to re-impose sanctions, or, legislation designating triggering events/actions that would initiate sanctions to go into effect.

60 votes will be needed in the Senate, thus Ds needed.

McMaster seems to be looking for Ds to use process to remove 90 day presidential re-certifying requirements (which were enacted to cause periods of embarrassment/negative press to Dem. Pres.) during the process

A buddy and I were talking about the debt a current young American faces in their lifetime.

Coming out of college in debt, adding additional debt to buy a home (if even possible) and then growing older still in debt only to run into health issues to add even more debt.

We came to the conclusion it is intended because it keeps everyone working for the banks, under control as far as behavior because you can’t be risky and then when you die they take what is left.

Ah the American Dream. What was that again? I can’t remember.

Gee, that should give the rest of the world a lot of confidence in American foreign policy…

As I understand it, the Trump “plan” is to decertify the deal as not being in the US national security interest, and then to tell Congress not to vote new sanctions against Iran. IOW, its just a way to get Trump out of having to certify the deal every ninety days. Except it could backfire if enough Republicans feel like they have to vote for sanctions based on their campaign rhetoric.

And the rwnj response will be the same. How dare he/she go on foreign soil and bad-mouth America. And then bam… we are back in the cultural fight with the same crazies as we were in 2008 (to present).

I’ve said this before and I will say it again.

One older generation needs to die off so the younger generation with better education, understanding, and morals to take its place and fix the issues of the day.

I just hope it doesn’t take more than one generation to do this. My grandparents (well one side of them) are bigots. The other side was not (and sadly they are already gone - and were gone before I was born). I’m done thinking that this can be fixed by changing minds/attitudes. Faux News is too prevalent with the idiot, open-jawed mouth breathers to allow this change to happen.

I’m still of the belief these guys know damn well what they are doing. Most of them have law degrees in addition to other studies. History is surely taught.

We use words like ‘craven’ and ‘willful ignorance’ because it is deliberate on their parts. They do it because they feed their ignorant bases.

What always gets me is too many times they are also very religious but fly in the face of that too.

The money is good, you just trade in your soul and reap the benefits of the lobbyists and party backers to do their bidding.

I never buy the act.

It is why I called my senator Ben Sasse in an E-mail a liar for misrepresenting the scientific evidence surrounding when a foetus can feel pain in his support of a twenty-week ban on abortion so he can smuggle his religious views in with pseudoscientific claptrap.

He is lying. That is the only explanation.

I was called out by others (not here) who after reading my E-mail called me “emotional” for calling my senator a liar, and claiming an “emotional” argument will carry no weight.

In reality, my being a Democrat will carry no weight, which is why his office never responds to my letters and E-mails, and why I can never get through on the telephone (caller ID blocking). Calling him a liar is not emotional. It is a statement of fact.

re: #439 ObserverArt

A buddy and I were talking about the debt a current young American faces in their lifetime.

Coming out of college in debt, adding additional debt to buy a home (if even possible) and then growing older still in debt only to run into health issues to add even more debt.

We came to the conclusion it is intended because it keeps everyone working for the banks, under control as far as behavior because you can’t be risky and then when you die they take what is left.

Ah the American Dream. What was that again? I can’t remember.

America has very much evolved into a plutocracy. Wealth has always bought influence and power, but wealth alone is rarely enough to compel obedience of the populace to maintain the societal structure that allows wealth. Aristocracy and monarchy compelled obedience through religion and the belief in the divine right. Dictatorships compel obedience through a monopoly on force. America now compels obedience through a modified religious method - worship of the rich and belief in their moral superiority.

From an academic point of view, some measure of compulsion has always been necessary because control of the means of production has always depended on control of the populace. This is the core idea behind Marxism (revolution to reclaim control of the means of production) and also the reason why Randian Objectivism is such a ludicrous fantasy (rich people don’t exist in a vacuum). I wonder, though, what will happen as automation becomes more prevalent and the means of production really doesn’t depend on a population any more. What happens as the rich realise that they don’t need other humans any more and that they only cost money to control?

Unfortunately it’s not about the Democrats really. Democrats could be a model political party and nominate the second coming of Christ himself as a candidate, but it doesn’t matter as long as the electoral process is controlled by Republicans (through voter suppression and gerrymandering) and the Republican enablers that are CNN and the other major media sources.

re: #440 Big Beautiful Door

As I understand it, the Trump “plan” is to decertify the deal as not being in the US national security interest, and then to tell Congress not to vote new sanctions against Iran. IOW, its just a way to get Trump out of having to certify the deal every ninety days. Except it could backfire if enough Republicans feel like they have to vote for sanctions based on their campaign rhetoric.

Well good luck with THAT - leaving it up to the likes of professional Iran-basher Sen. Tom Cotton to determine US policy towards the country? Yet another nakedly-political-cowardly responsibility-dump from this Maladministration: as usual, Trump wants to get credit/”ratings” for his “leadership”*; but no blame (or really, any responsibility) if (when) things go wrong. I imagine that if Congress votes any new/different sanctions on Iran, Preznit Asshole will just sign off on them, and then go off golfing, claiming “it’s Congress’s problem”.
Of course, this begs the issue of what the US is going to do if/when most of the rest of the world declines to sign on to making Iran the Permanent Designated Evil Boogeyman Of The Universe: especially if the Iranians keep to the terms of the JCPOA; as they have said they would regardless of what the US does.

If you search for “Breitbart” on Facebook, one of the listings likely to pop up is a group featuring the news organization’s red logo, with more than 20,000 members. When you click to join, you’re asked to answer three questions, including whether you consider the government your enemy. But the group has no affiliation with the Breitbart news organization, and if an administrator lets you in, you’ll see a news feed consisting of mainstream news, conservative commentary and outright fabrications. The sketchiest posts link to fringe websites few have ever heard of.

This terrifies me. My wife doesn’t even want our kid (to be born any day now) to know that Dotard was even a President. We will do what the Egyptians did to Akhenaten after he changed Egyptian society to a new god… just remove the memory and the iconography of it and go back to the old ways.

(borrowing an idea from a space opera I’m fond of) Make t**** the Faceless One. Any physical representation of him to be altered accordingly. Internet worms perpetually online to do the same for all digital images.

Millions of cat owners in this country fish things out of the cat box on a regular basis that are more qualified to opine on mideast affairs than Hannity (or t**** for that matter).

Never claimed to be anything but.

Sure, Trump’s doing some pretty fucked up shit. But what has he really accomplished?

Legislatively, he’s a fucking loser. He’s got full control of all branches of government and he hasn’t chalked up a single win yet. All he can do is sign EOs, and he hasn’t moved on most of the shit he’s signed so far.

Okay, he got one Supreme Court justice confirmed. But he didn’t even do that, McConnell did.

He’s the most unpopular president ever, and when the Russian shit really hits the fan, that will get a lot worse.

I’m not naturally an optimist. At all. However, sometimes a certain degree of optimism is required as part of a job (e.g., a project planner requires a certain level of professional optimism just to get the job done). The US political process is presently like this for sane people. Despair lets evil win, so some level of optimism is required just to mount a resistance.

We lived through Nixon because Agnew was forced out of office and replaced by Ford AND the Republican party was sane then. It doesn’t look like Pence is leaving. He probably won’t do the grifting but everything else that Trump tried, Pence will manage and actually get through. Is there anyone in the Trump cabinet that Pence wouldn’t support, other than possibly Linda McMahon? Of course, he is less likely to start a nuclear war — which may be his only saving grace — and his behavior would be more conventional.

I believe that when Mueller starts swinging the axe, there won’t be too many people from the Trump administration left standing.

Special elections across the nation in state legislatures to school boards are flipping from safe R seats to Democratic wins, sometimes in areas that haven’t seen a Dem in office in ages.

This is hardly over, Trump is below the crazification factor in polling, and voters are deeply R districts are the ones becoming disillusioned as their candidate and Congress is failing to deliver on any promises.

There are elections for VA and NJ governor and the VA House of Delegates this year. Next year’s election is coming in on a whole slew of Democratic wins in Republican districts.

The press isn’t covering that well, as local elections are not of much interest to those in other states, but momentum is there (see also the March for Science and the Women’s March on Washington).

This is not “unbridled optimism.” The local and state elections are examples of Democrats being motivated and Republicans being disillusioned.

In Iowa and Nebraska, two Republican state senators have abandoned the Republican Party and became Libertarians. The LP is gearing up to challenge Republicans in many local elections across the nation (that will draw off conservative voters from the Republicans).

Things aren’t as bad as it seems… .

Agnew was forced out of office on Maryland state charges.

As it turns out, Pence is under pressure in Indiana for using his and his wife’s AOL accounts to avoid reporting for state business.

Remember, back when there was an apparently insignificant hotel burglary in 1972, it took over two years for the Nixon Administration to come to an end. Then we only got reports in the morning or evening newspapers and the evening television news, and even then it seemed like the country was going to fly apart to me. It didn’t.

Now we have the Internet parsing and mulling over every tidbit and rumour that comes out about what might or might not be happening.

Patience. While technology has accelerated news reporting and rumours (and there were rumours in the Seventies as well), investigations and the justice system take the same amount of time.

Remember, with the GOP in charge of the whole government now, they have gotten almost nothing done.

And this is before the tawdry details of Russian collusion have been made public. Once details start coming out, a lot of people who are quiet now will be disgusted.

His support among Republicans is, IMO, deceptively high. Much of it is simply party identification at this point. Hell, his support among Repubs is down 13 points since he was sworn in.

Not even Dubya did that.
