Trump’s Deconstruction of the United States Is Accelerating

The bad craziness gets worse every day
Politics • Views: 35,065

Happy Friday! Today Donald Trump took big steps toward killing Obamacare and the Iran nuclear deal, appointed another energy industry-linked climate change denier to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality, used his daughter-in-law to promote propaganda on his garbage Trump TV Facebook channel, and became the first president to give a speech to the virulent anti-gay religious fanatic hate group, Family Research Council.

Discuss.

As far as I’m concerned, Trump IS the death panel. This could easily kill far more Americans than ISIL or even the deliberate neglect shown to Puerto Rico’s Americans. Maybe the Page puts it too angrily. I can live with that.

Empires fall. We’re alive to see the US go the way of other empires.

We aren’t gone yet.

Right now the conservatives, as represented by the GOP, are at the peak of governmental power.

They are sort of like the Rocky Mountain Locust. In 1875, the largest locust swarm in history in North America occurred, 198,000 square miles in size.

Thirty years later, the locust was extinct.

In many social movements (just like species), the peak of power is actually the end.

The lash back from the populace since the election has shown that this is far from over; Republican politicians afraid to see their constituents because of protests only hurts their ability to campaign or get their message out.

Unlike Democrats facing the Astroturf movement of the Tea Party - Democratic politicians continued to meet with constituents. Even the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords did not end Democrats meeting constituents. Democrats or Democratic candidates are now offering to meet neighbouring districts where Republicans are too cowardly to show up.

Since I mentioned locusts, “patience, Grasshopper.”

Sadly, a lot of people fail to recognize their own biases and it is particularly ironic that people working in an industry that developed out of a couple of government programs should so frequently adopt a “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” mentality.

Liberal democracies must be able to defend themselves online. Too much of the tech community dismisses, or even mocks, the fundamental political reality confronting the governments that guarantee and protect their rights.

In this way, for all their technological brains, many minds in Silicon Valley remain the weakest link in defending our cherished rights and political values online in the 21st Century.

SCOTUS probably won’t get its gerrymandering decision out soon enough to get Wisconsin’s lines redrawn in time for next year’s midterms. Then there will be the huge battle to get lines redrawn all over the country for 2020.

When the smaller dominoes start falling (like when those FB ads are made public), a lot of people’s perceptions are going to change, and fast.

Plenty of ad fodder out there, especially since 99% of congressional Repubs are either all in with Trump or are silently letting him go wild.

They oughta realize that those Trump stains are not gonna wash out. But Republicans aren’t known for having a capacity for long-term thinking.

I see that Holocaust denial articles are a staple at Unz.

unz.com

Unz Review (unz.com) was started by Ron Unz, a libertarian dudebro who ran against Pete Wilson for the CA primary in 1994 (he was trounced by Wilson).

He then sponsored a proposition which was somewhat of a modification of English-only teaching in schools.

He then started the wingnut Holocaust denying site (the site itself bills itself as publishing articles that do not get mainstream media attention).

From Wikipedia, the stellar list of wingnut libertarian Holocaust deniers who write for him:

In November 2013, Unz launched the website The Unz Review, a blogging platform. Notable people blogging at the Unz Review, aside from Unz himself, include Kevin B. MacDonald and Steve Sailer; Ron Paul, Patrick J. Buchanan and Ilana Mercer’s writings are also syndicated on on the site. Unz has outlined the political strategy behind the creation of The Unz Review in an article entitled “American Pravda: Breaching the Media Barrier”.

That isn’t it, because Pence would do the same thing. IMO Republicans know the party is finally fracturing along the fault line of Chamber of Commerce vs. the base, and they want to steal as much as possible before this split actually happens.

The fact that this requires keeping t**** in office, even though he’s a clear and present danger, is irrelevant to Republicans because Republicans are evil.

I’m trying to be optimistic without being too happy clappy, but Jesus it’s hard. It’s going to take YEARS to clean up this mess, and that’s assuming something is actually done to stop this madness. And this is the big question, what do you do when one political party gains overall control of the government for the sole purpose of destroying it while enriching themselves? What seriously can be done? Every day that passes with these evil clowns in control is just that much more damage. Everyone is depending on Robert Mueller to save the day, and I understand his need for thoroughness and time, but the longer this takes, the more people are literally dying. RIGHT NOW.

The 25th amendment is a pipe dream. 1) It requires bigger vote margins in congress than impeachment and removal from office, 2) a majority of t****’s cabinet of t**** fart-sniffers would have to go along with it, and 3) the president can interfere with the removal process endlessly by certifying to Congress that he’s fit for office.

That clause of the 25th amendment is for dealing with a president who falls into a coma or the like. t**** is not in a coma. t**** is just grossly unqualified for office. The remedy for a president that is grossly unqualified for office has been there since the founding, and it is impeachment and removal from office by Congress.

I see so much useless nonsense in the media about the 25th amendment that I’m starting to think that it’s part of the ongoing Russian anti-US operations.

North Korea may have damaged its nuclear test site where it can no longer use it.

A series of tremors and landslides near North Korea’s nuclear test base likely mean the country’s sixth and largest blast has destabilized the region, and the Punggye-ri nuclear site may not be used for much longer to test nuclear weapons, experts say.

A small quake was detected early on Friday near the North’s nuclear test site, South Korea’s weather agency said, but unlike quakes associated with nuclear tests, it did not appear to be manmade. The tremor was the latest in a string of at least three shocks to be observed since Pyongyang’s Sept. 3 nuclear test, which caused a 6.3 magnitude earthquake.

Friday’s quake was a magnitude 2.7 with a depth of 3 km in North Hamgyong Province in North Korea, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake at 2.9 magnitude at a depth of 5 km.

I try to remind myself that in the past few centuries this land has been through many upheavals, lots of wars and death, conflicts of all sorts (ideological, hot-wars, economic collapses, etc.)

Trump is by far the worst President of any that I can remember from reading about the past or have experienced in my life.

But remember, America has a long history of weird and frankly nutty things.

Joseph Smith and his fabled golden tablets - people bought (and some still do) into that idea.

Hoaxes of all sorts.

And remember than many of the laws we have to protect people only came about after decades of large companies controlling so much wealth that it took a large backlash of popular angst to force American politicians (who otherwise were in the pockets of the barons) into action.

I had some dipshit in a large pickup truck parked next to me at a light in Cheyenne a few months ago. Apparently the fellow despises economical cars like Smarts, and hit the old “coal rolling” machine in his truck to bury my wife and me in diesel smoke.

I quickly accelerated away from the jerk.

Hopefully that fellow’s coal-rolling will destroy the engine on his very expensive truck.

I think there is either a setting they can hit, or a gizmo that can be added to the engine management system that allows those idiots to roll the black smoke.

I love cars and vehicles, but that is about the dumbest shit ever. Well, other than an full aero kit for a clapped out Honda Civic that has a hard time getting to 35 mph.

Here’s one small benefit of Earth Day here in my area: The city collects chemicals (paints, and other things that shouldn’t be pored down a drain) from people and handles them properly. And the line is huge every year. It definitely reduces the amount of waste disposed of improperly, and gives people a fixed date to do it.

The list you give of past Americans being gullible do not make me feel better about the current crop of morons we have running around.

Buchanan stumbled and bumbled his way through his presidency hoping the Dred Scott decision (!) would solve all those vexing issues troubling the nation. But the civil war certainly can’t be blamed on Buchanan.

So IMO t**** is already the worst ever. No previous president has been so personally corrupt. No previous president was so shallow that every official act that was not personally financially lucrative was plainly motivated by spite toward his predecessor in office. Etc. etc.

We now have several companies in the Columbus area that you can recycle and rid yourself of just about anything. One of the places takes chemicals 3 weekdays and on Saturday.

My favorite is a place that will recycle just about anything mechanical and electrical. The only thing they won’t take is stuff with freon or other gases like it…meaning refrigerators or air conditioners. They take old TV’s but charge $5 for any with a picture tube. All else gets broken down and recycled…for free.

All the auto places around me, including the Walmart service departments, will take car batteries from you. Best buy has a drop box in their entrance for smaller batteries, just wrap them in individual bags so they can’t connect. Not that I’m pure in that department.

For large lead-acid batteries (car/truck/ATV/garden), AutoZone and Advance Auto accepts them, even if you’re not buying another one from them; IIRC, both of them even give you store credit ($5-10) for them to spend however, if it’s not being turned in for a core charge refund on another battery.

For NiCd and lithium batteries, such as for phones, tools, etc., Home Depot accepts those, in addition to fluorescent bulbs; the one by my house has a collection box right inside the front door.

Every single time I’ve needed to dispose of batteries, I’ve gotten a run around from all of the above. “Don’t have room”, “Can’t take those at this location”, “Manager is out and I don’t know how to it”, etc, etc. Auto parts stores seem to always ‘conveniently’ have their waste oil storage full as well. Eventually I do get it taken care of. But I look forward to going to the dentist over having to get rid of anything that you can’t just throw in the blue bin.

He wasn’t a house cat even though we got him from the pound. He came home twice a day when he was hungry, and occasionally spent the night. When we moved, we left him with the new owners (it was a condition of selling) because he wouldn’t have moved.

Love Bluegill too. #3. Used to catch hand size ‘gills at a local lake. They are fun too on 1 lb. test line and a small spinning reel, light graphite pole.

You probably have more access to Walleye and Perch up in Wisconsin. Last time I was up there at a race at Elkhart Lake, we stayed in Oshkosh. Found a little mom & pop restaurant that just happened to be having an all you can eat Walleye special. We turned gluttonous.

re: #154 Belafon

We had a tomcat when I was a kid whose only true enemy was a possum. He came home torn up one day. We kept him in for a couple of weeks until he healed, and then he came back a few days later torn up again. After that recovery, he never came home hurt again. Not sure what happened to the possum.

He wasn’t a house cat even though we got him from the pound. He came home twice a day when he was hungry, and occasionally spent the night. When we moved, we left him with the new owners (it was a condition of selling) because he wouldn’t have moved.

Our cats are strictly indoor cats. This is a rough neighborhood for pets, lots of possums and raccoons about. Our neighbors had a cat they let out, and the poor thing came home missing an ear one morning.

Scout the dog has already taken out a squirrel and a possum, much to my (and my wife’s) dismay. We had a tree removed a couple of weeks back, and I think we displaced a family of raccoons - my wife (and the dog) saw 5 or 6 of them climbing a tree in our front yard.

I’ve been taking Scout out on the lead and doing a flashlight sweep of the yard before taking him out. The last thing I need is The Great Hunter trying to mix it up with multiple raccoons. That could be bad.

Weinstein’s a target of opportunity. He has public connections to Democrats, hence he’s fair game. That he’s a major celeb with connections to prominent Republicans (*couTrumpsgh*) is being totally glossed over because he’s the shortest distance between wingnut “outrage” and Hillary Clinton.

The corruption never ends with this den of thieves.

The nomination is controversial because Myers, a businessman and lawyer who runs the weather service AccuWeather, has previously lobbied in favor of measures to restrict the information that the NWS is permitted to release to the public in order to give private companies like his a leg up in promoting their own products. According to the Washington Post, the nomination also breaks with decades of precedent for nominating someone with a science background to fill the NOAA administrator role.

Put them on ice right outta the water in an old cooler. Makes all the difference in freshness and ultimately taste.

I learned freshwater fish start to not be fresh soon after not moving about in the water. Real bad on a hot summer day and they are near the surface.

People often don’t like fish that taste “fishy” to them. That is eliminated by icing them right off. Keep ‘em on ice until scaled and filleted and they stay nice and sweet.

Outside of that, good looking catch and dinner there.

Yes. And read my #180. I’m thinking you may be a person that doesn’t like freshwater fish because of how they were handled when caught. That is usually the case.

It is different than saltwater fish, though I imagine icing them is better too.

I used to fish a lot for panfish like Bluegills and Crappie. My buddy, since passed, and I could go out in an evening and catch 30 or more in a couple hours. We had it down to a science. All it took was some study of fish and how they react to temperature of the water.

I still have my 14’ Meyers fishing boat, 2 hp Honda 4-stroke motor and a little Cox trailer. Just haven’t used it in some time, got too busy with other things like work and rehabbing my house. it was great, whole rig may weigh 120 lbs. I could tow it behind my VWs easily, almost like it wasn’t back there. You could pick up the boat and motor attached and carry it down to the lake edge. We could go anywhere with it.

We used to fish, smoke a doob and sit there and talk politics, the world and philosophy. We were younger and didn’t give a shit then. Now there is not enough time.

That happened to a former client of mine. He saw a coon in his big old trash bin. Thought the little critter needed some help getting out as he couldn’t figure out how he got in. So, he took a tree limb and when he put it in, the little criminal ran up the limb, bit him and took off. It was so fast the guy didn’t know what happened.

Rabies shots were in order. Painful rabies shots. They are automatic for racoon bites, no stopping them if the docs find out what happened.

The Myth of the Spitting Antiwar Protester

“So where do these stories come from?”

The reporter was asking about accounts that soldiers returning from Vietnam had been spat on by antiwar activists. I had told her the stories were not true. I told her that, on the contrary, opponents of the war had actually tried to recruit returning veterans. I told her about a 1971 Harris Poll survey that found that 99 percent of veterans said their reception from friends and family had been friendly, and 94 percent said their reception from age-group peers, the population most likely to have included the spitters, was friendly.

But you don’t believe the stories, right? she asked. Acknowledging that I could not prove the negative — that they were not true — I went on to say there is no corroboration or documentary evidence, such as newspaper reports from the time, that they are true. Many of the stories have implausible details, like returning soldiers deplaning at San Francisco Airport, where they were met by groups of spitting hippies. In fact, return flights landed at military air bases like Travis, from which protesters would have been barred. Others include claims that military authorities told them on returning flights to change into civilian clothes upon arrival lest they be attacked by protesters. Trash cans at the Los Angeles airport were piled high with abandoned uniforms, according to one eyewitness, a sight that would surely have been documented by news photographers — if it had existed.

A Cranky One  Oct 13, 2017 • 4:59:17pm

Since I mentioned my dad’s experience returning from Vietnam, I thought I’d share something he wrote for other chaplains. I suspect William will enjoy this.

MIDWAY between every person and that unfeeling monolith
called “institution” or ’ ‘establishment’ ’ there
should be a special person — a friend, advisor, helper —
someone who’s experienced enough to “know,” but able still
to feel how it was not to belong, not to be sure.

That someone ought to be in the world, but not of the
world — able to lead, but willing to walk side by side, even
when such a walk may be an open invitation to disaster.
His notion of love is doing and sharing, not talking and
keeping. The meanings he assigns to the joys and tragedies
of life are fashioned out of his own experience and through
his ready sharing of the experiences of others — honestly
concerned and openly crying when others suffer, and hon-
estly caring and openly rejoicing when others find happi-
ness.

Midway between — always aware that God is interested
in him, but also in every man — always aware of the ten-
sion between serving others to forward the self and serving
others despite that same self. Midway — a caring receiving
island in a huge and hostile sea — a center for repair and
rest and refreshment.

Midway between — a fearsome and beautiful place to be :
a place one must consciously choose again and again when
common sense and self -concern and the voice of the elders
call to a higher more secure place. Midway between — each
decision a risk, each experience a fresh discovery, each en-
counter a touch from the hand of God.

Midway between — a great place for a chaplain to be.

So I’m sitting under The Tree (banyan) in Lahaina, watching all the other tourists wandering around. Paradise, if it weren’t so bloody humid. And even so, there’s a nice fresh breeze from the ocean. I haven’t been posting (not that I do all that much anyway) because my connection is problematic.

Anyway, the last couple of days, I have been in a multiracial world, where people seem interested in helping one another instead of establishing their superiority. No evidence of DT or his supporters to be seen (I expect they’re here somewhere).

If the Rs want to turn us all into their image, they will have an uphill battle.

Tonight the ship heads off into the ocean toward Sydney. My cabin apparently cleans itself, food cooks itself and appears before us — the only chore left is laundry. (Sadly, DT is still president, which takes away around 25% from the pleasure of my vacation.)

So hang in there, and hold the fort until I’m back to rejoin the battle.

I think part of the problem with the NOAA thing is that no reputable scientist wants anything to do with Donald Trump.

He’s alienated and pissed off so many people he can only pick from the bottom of the barrel to fill the remaining positions.

Trump’s been picking from the bottom of the barrel from day one. Nothing new here.

I did not know that Dylan was the opening act for MLK and the “I have a Dream” speech? Too bad the footage is not better.

Youtube Video

A bullet from the back of a bush
Took Medgar Evers’ blood
A finger fired the trigger to his name
A handle hid out in the dark
A hand set the spark
Two eyes took the aim
Behind a man’s brain
But he can’t be blamed
He’s only a pawn in their game

A South politician preaches to the poor white man
“You got more than the blacks, don’t complain
You’re better than them, you been born with white skin, ” they explain
And the Negro’s name
Is used, it is plain
For the politician’s gain
As he rises to fame
And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game

The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid
And the marshals and cops get the same
But the poor white man’s used in the hands of them all like a tool
He’s taught in his school
From the start by the rule
That the laws are with him
To protect his white skin
To keep up his hate
So he never thinks straight
‘Bout the shape that he’s in
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game

From the poverty shacks, he looks from the cracks to the tracks
And the hoofbeats pound in his brain
And he’s taught how to walk in a pack
Shoot in the back
With his fist in a clinch
To hang and to lynch
To hide ‘neath the hood
To kill with no pain
Like a dog on a chain
He ain’t got no name
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game

Today, Medgar Evers was buried from the bullet he caught
They lowered him down as a king
But when the shadowy sun sets on the one
That fired the gun
He’ll see by his grave
On the stone that remains
Carved next to his name
His epitaph plain
Only a pawn in their game

Let’s say the House and Senate both voted to impeach Trump.

How quickly would he be out on his ass?

He’s no longer President the second he’s found guilty in the Senate trial, but the process to get there takes awhile. It took the House of Representatives two months and eleven days from the first authorization to open an impeachment inquiry on Clinton to approving two articles of impeachment. It then took another seven weeks for the Senate trial to conclude and for the vote to acquit him.

The GOP in Congress have clearly demonstrated that they do not care what Trump does as long as he doesn’t upset their apple cart.

Now with the failure of Trump to get any substantial legislation moved through Congress, a time may come when Ryan et. al. fail at a tax package for their deep pocket sponsors. If that happens then perhaps all this other stuff may count for something, but until then it’s just business as usual.

I once worked closely with a brilliant coder whose code was amazingly concise, compiled tiny and ran super fast, but was often impossible to understand. For giggles I’d take some samples of his code to people with decades of coding experience and ask them what the code does. Usually got blank stares after a careful examination. Heck, in the time we worked together he wrote a bug report on the compiler; after it was fixed, we recovered significant real-time resources.

To your previous comment, his code was usually poorly documented and when there were comments, they were things like “This section explains why a raven is like a writing desk.”

As a project manager, I wouldn’t pay such a person.

For any coder to get paid, I’d require the code to be delivered to another person (not familiar with project) to write up an explanation of what was going on and why. If that couldn’t be done, then the original coder doesn’t get paid.

I also used to invoke waving a dead chicken over a computer as a way to fix SCSI errors since the first couple of generations of SCSI could get insanely gnarly fast. My co-workers never could understand why I’d whip out a rubber chicken while cussing out the tape drive especially…

It’s disgusting just how many people in this country are more than happy with a fascist state.

My question… Has this country always been this way? Was I taught bullshit my whole life? Did I just have blinders on because of white middle class privilege?

tRumps election has me doubting everything I thought I knew about this country. And I’m a fucking historian.

moderates/liberals were for the agreement & hopeful for relations with the US.

Hard liners hate the US.

Moderates are very disappointed & hardliners are saying, we told you so.

Arapahoe Basin ski area opened today with one run.

This picture from this morning is why I skip opening days if only one run is open.

Is that “painting” from the same jackass who did all those paintings that trashed Obama?

Possibly. We should always be open to the idea that our teachers/elders only gave us biased information.

I know that there were Nazi sympathisers in this country. Many years ago my mother worked for a (descendant of German immigrants) guy, who she discovered kept Nazi memorabilia, and not necessarily just as a history-hobby.

Most of the 1950’s propaganda by the rabid anti-communist politicians in this country strike me as tending very much like indoctrination into a state of mind that, if it went unchecked, could have led to a fascistic state.

Early American history mostly is about taking land from Natives (and killing them if they resisted), which itself raises the question of American penchant for genocide.

But these sort of discussions can really make people uncomfortable.

I find myself wondering the same thing. And we have similiar backgrounds. White, middle class, and I while I don’t use my history degree’s historical stuff in my profession I definitely would consider myself something of a historian.

There are people angry that this will no longer be a white country. And they’ll sell their souls to prevent the change.

Yes and no.

Yes there have always been scum & fascists behind much in this nation. Google Smedley Butler & the Business Plot for example.

No, OTOH, there have always been men and women who believe in the promise and ideals that our nation was founded on. We will never succeed in perfection but we’ll die making it a better place than it was when we found it.

Chose your side, pick up your (metaphorical for now) weapon and fight to make America what it was always supposed to be.

They’re the ideological descendants of those who freaked out about Catholics and Jews emigrating in mass numbers.

Video

Krauss and Plant used to cohabitate in South Austin.

I ran into Plant three times at the local HEB Grocery (the Ocho!). He was always wearing half-glasses and staring at food labels.

“Hi, Bob.”

“Hullo.”

“Don’t worry, its South Austin and no one is going to give you any smack.”

“I know, that’s why I like it.”

I once mentioned that my brother-in-law was one of the founding members of Silly Wizard, and got him his numbers. They’ve been in touch.

Last year, on our annual trek to Leighton Buzzard, I noticed that my BIL had three absolutely gorgeous guitars made by a luthier in SoCal. He’s a trader in fine guitars. I asked him “Three?”. He said “They’re works of art and brilliant instruments.”

They are.

Here’s her website:

wingertguitars.com

I just gasped when I saw the list price per axe.
