Some real chutzpah there from Bannon, but we knew the RWNJs would pull the “Trump is CinC/a “wartime president”” beard to cover for Trump eventually.

Fascism. Even in jest this demonizes the free press and suggests an equivalence that does not exist.
Angered by gun control, this lawmaker drafted a bill to require licenses for journalists

A state lawmaker in Indiana has drafted a measure to require licenses for journalists akin to those that pertain to handgun owners, a proposal legal experts says directly violates the First Amendment.

The measure would require journalists — defined as anyone writing or broadcasting news for a newspaper, magazine, website or television or radio station — to be registered and fingerprinted by the police and vetted for their “character and reputation.”

State Rep. Jim Lucas, a Republican from the southeastern part of Indiana and a vocal critic of his state’s gun restrictions, drafted the bill by copying language from a state law that requires a license to carry a handgun in public.

The mayor visited my business just before (and running into) my lunch break. After the weather and business related small talk, I said, ‘I have a question for you. Why hasn’t the chief of police been fired?’ We had that discussion for about 20 minutes, he thanked me for sharing my views, and left.

As I warned him, this issue will be ripped open again, once the court decides the civil case before them.

It has been an interesting morning. And now it is afternoon! Probably evening for that fishy in another time zone.

Republican trend setters like Nugent, LImbaugh, Hannity, Barton etc. obviously do not believe many of the standard claims they try to brainwash the rubes to believe. This is obvious since they have to be fairly smart themselves, though utterly depraved, to do what they do. They don’t really think Soros is an evil mastermind or that Obama is a Marxist or that Hillary left Americans to die in Benghazi. They don’t really believe that the lack of bathroom law will endanger children or that supply-side Jesus watches over the wealthy and gives them a special set of rules.
There is one delusional piece of idiocy that I think they do share with their dupes: The belief that they have a virtual monopoly on guns and the use of force. This drives their increasingly obvious attempts to foment violence and force a violent showdown. If they didn’t seriously believe this they would dial down the rhetoric. It also involves a subject field, weapons and their use, in which fairly smart people are often misinformed and in which many of the realities are counter-intuitive. When the history of this period is written, this belief in their ability to win with force may be recorded as the political right’s most crucial, and fatal, error.

Ophelia is expected to hit Ireland as it transitions back to being an non-tropical storm.

Which is how it started in the central Atlantic. Just a cut-off low pressure that drifted a bit south and west and then turned into a tropical storm.

Odd things like this happen once in a long while. Still very rare.

That first house we bought was in a very small town and at the end of a cul de sac. Out back was a hawthorn tree that attracted all manner of songbirds. We were halfway up a small mountain, a bit up out of the valley. I put large cut logs about 3 feet tall into the tree line and would place my eggshells, bacon drippings and suet and seed. I lived there 10 years and got to be known as a great feeding spot by the birdies. Red tail hawk and American kestrel would sometimes blast through the tree line trying to snag prey as I stood there. It was amazing. Over in 3 seconds and about 1000 moves. Now I live closer to the river and I see bald eagles with more regularity, along with cormorants, egrets and Great Blue Herons.

Hi all—brief break in the action at my project, so checking in to see if we are still surviving the yam.

My boss came for the first two days (I mean, he;s not technically my boss as I am a freelancer, but it is his project, so I guess the term applies.) He’s a smart guy, but clueless about how these projects operate on the ground. There was a typo in an important question on the survey we’re doing (he did NOT ask me to proofread it—sigh) so now we have to affix labels with the correct wording on between 7,000 and 8,000 sheets. Gah.

Other than that, going well—good crew (so far) and I have one of my favorite assistants.

Back to the boss—he is a solid, hardcore Democrat but is so fucking pessimistic—i.e. there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do. Woe is us. I point out the things I try to do—working with Emerge America, working with individual candidates, working with our Dem women’s group and encouraging young women. He just rolls his eyes and says “That’s all great, but the Dems are going to continue to lose blah blah blah” I love the guy, but would sometimes just like to slap him silly.

OK—back to work. I keep up reading here at night, but don’t have a lot of time to comment.

Forgot to mention earlier. Ohio State University refused Richard Spencer to speak on campus. University of Cincinnati is allowing him.

Heh. I’ve always said there is a difference between Columbus and Cincinnati.

NBC 4i - Ohio State says it will not allow Richard Spencer to speak; University of Cincinnati will allow it

CINCINNATI (WCMH/AP) — The University of Cincinnati says it will allow white nationalist Richard Spencer to speak on campus.

Spencer’s attorney Kyle Bristow told UC and The Ohio State University they had until Friday to agree to make campus space available for Spencer to speak or face a lawsuit. Georgia college student Cameron Padgett contacted both universities last month about renting space. He asked the University of Cincinnati in late September to provide an auditorium to accommodate 800 people for Spencer to speak later this month.

OSU has denied Padgett’s request, saying the request “cannot be accommodated without substantial risk to public safety.”

UC’s president, Neville Pinto, said in a statement that the university “must adhere to the foundational rights embedded in the First Amendment. That includes protecting speech of all types at all times—even, perhaps especially, words that are blatantly hateful or offensive.”

The Ohio universities are the latest targeted for appearances by Spencer since he participated in the August white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that led to deadly violence.

Spencer is scheduled to speak Oct. 19 at the University of Florida. That university’s president is urging students to stay away from Spencer’s appearance and to speak out against “hate and racism.”

UF says it expects to spend $500,000 on security for the event. It said as a public institution it is legally obligated to allow the expression of many viewpoints by external groups, such as Spencer’s National Policy Institute.

They may be smarter than many of their rubes, I’ll give you that. And someone like Limbaugh probably even above average intelligence. But there have to be some standards. Calling Hannity smart robs the word of all meaning, dammit!

Even the somewhat smart ones like Bannon aren’t exactly evil masterminds. That academic shtick only works on his right wing fanboys. Or even Hitler, who had some smarts and pulled off an astonishing rise to power: When I first read bits of Mein Kampf, what struck me most was how irrational and underwhelming it is.

I think part of the problem may be that our culture tends to associate success, particularly economic success, with being smart by default. But white male right wingers really don’t have to be geniuses to make it in their lives, especially in media.

“SHOULD BE ALLOWED”

I love that language.

I wish I could remember the details of a story I read or heard a while back: A white slave owner from the South recognized the intelligence in one of his slaves. He cultivated that intelligence and the slave became his highest ranking slave. He handled his accounts and otherwise was a very trusted person. After years of service, the owner decided to free this man and his wife.

He drew-up the paperwork, did whatever legaleeze was necessary and called the pair into his office. With much grandiosity, he announced his decision and handed them their paperwork.

The two just stood and stared at him. He had expected them to fall to their knees and kiss his feet in gratitude.

When he asked about their lackluster response, they replied that he was simply giving them what was already theirs.

Last night into this morning, little Ophelia continued to increase its wind speed and was classified as a cat 3 hurricane, rather unusual for a storm this far east and north.

Satellite images of the North Atlantic:

Tomorrow is the 30th anniversary of the Great Storm which hit southern England with similar strength; that was the worst storm to hit Britain since 1703.

At least they’re getting good forecasts this time. The failure of the Met Office in 1987 was legendary.

I just found out one of my dude’s good friends from not too distant past died. I don’t know how to tell him. :(

I remember when my cousin died (mixing drugs and alcohol). She was 26. My parents were in Germany, having the trip of their lives, and we had no way of getting hold of them (this was 1990). And I couldn’t go to the funeral myself since I’d sprained my ankle. (To my sister: “Can you see me trying to get through SFO on crutches? Are you nuts?”) I had to get my brother to root through old phone bills to get the numbers of relatives who might be interested in going to the funeral and then calling them. These were people I hadn’t talked to in years, and saying, “Hi, Uncle… Aunt…, I’m sorry to break this to you but Angela has died.” It was an ugly business.

My parents came back 10 days later and my brother met them at O’Hare. My mother could tell from his face that something bad had happened and the first thing out of her mouth was not “Hello,” but “Who died?”

Greetings. I’m happy to report that the fire fighters seem to be making progress in the North Bay. No more high winds are forecast for the near future. It’s still an ugly and dangerous situation, but there is progress. Firefighters are coming from all over-including Canada and Australia. Many missing people are being found, although there are more deaths being discovered as well.
The air quality here on the Peninsula is better today than it has been all week, though naturally it’s still poor in the North Bay.

And for those into the white precious metals, platinum is more affordable than probably anytime in our lives. Way less costly than (pure) gold. Mfg costs are about the same as 18kt. The custom makers/3d design guys are at the forefront. Bonus trend-fabrication, hand made work is coming back strong. We see this in raw stock sales of coiled wire and sheet increasing. These guys are amazing. We pushed 18k rose metallurgy to the very edge to get an 18rose stamping material that would withstand the processes they use.
