“Let me tell you about the time when Nazis held rallies in the United States.”
“Do you mean 1939?”
“No, 2017.”

As much as I want to see Issa and Nunes go down, seeing Rohrabacher get unseated is now at the top of my list. I remember back in the 70s he was organizing for the Libertarian Party. He was active in the Anarcho-Capitalist wing of the Party, attended the 1980 LP convention that nominated Ed Clark for president and a certain David Koch for Vice-President.

If there is karmic justice he will lose his seat and then get indicted by Mueller!

The Allies were a good deal harder on the Nazis than the U.S. had been on the Confederates, but it looks as though they too were not hard enough.

I dunno. The Germans seem to have learned Nazism’s lessons. Some of the worst Nazi apologists come form people whose grandfathers and great grandfathers fought against the regime like us and the U.K.

Who in Field Marshal von Shittertweet’s den of snakes has been putting things in front of him this last week or so? Suddenly he’s singing orders and making speeches which target actual legal structures. He’s starting to do real damage. What changed? New think tank? New “advisor”? Somebody with an understanding of law has handed him the knife.

The alt-right spent a lot of time convincing us that they just represented a point of view along the political spectrum. They are Nazis.

I know it is one thing to use that term to disparage people you disagree with, but if someone is marching in public with a swastika banner and chanting “Jews will not replace us!”, I think it is safe to assume they are Nazis and treat them as such.

Nothing made sense. Edison / Krall says he found the planet abandoned except for the drone workforce and all but three of his crew died but then why do the drone ships have pilots and where did all his soldiers come from? How the hell did he forget about the starship he crash landed on the planet? Why does Krall even need an ancient bio-weapon when he’s got a drone swarm fleet that can only be destroyed by the Beastie Boys? How you gonna cast Idris Elba and then not let him act?

The pilots were drones (robots) that were formerly used as miners. Krall converted them to an army. The other soldiers were recruited by him because of the shared hatred of Starfleet.

Hello, all,

I am now in China and start work tomorrow. I’ve recovered from jet lag, unpacked and kinda settled in my new flat. No internet access there yet, but at least I can use the office wifi. I’ll have a more detailed report once I meet my students, but for now I’m just letting you all know I’m alive and OK.

This is not news: Trump is an ass. I heard about his EO about health care while I was in LAX waiting for my international flight. Holy fuck! Will Congress and the courts let that EO stand? Seems like he just killed the ACA with the stroke of a pen.

Then there’s the Iran deal. And Puerto Rico still.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

It isn’t surprising to anyone here, but the people most affected by Trump’s insane sabotage of CSRs are the GOP dominated states. They’re the ones who will see the biggest spikes in premiums. They’re the ones who will get the most out of pocket costs added to their burdens.

And yet they continue to think Trump’s helping them.

Trump knows his marks better than most.

He also knows the media isn’t going to ask him tough questions before policies are announced.

Media needs to ask him directly what specifics are included in his tax policies. Ask him about the estate tax repeal, and who that helps and whether his family benefits. Ask him the thresholds for the estate tax.

Then demand he answer the same questions about the tax brackets.

As we saw in the debates, he can’t answer any of this, but the media continues giving him a pass. They continue giving this entire admin and the GOP a pass despite they elected a reactionary know nothing who isn’t competent to hold the position.

This article is a couple days old, so maybe it has been posted and I missed it.

It is another revelation into the background of President Donny. It says a lot about him really and how he may have come to be the blowhard over-the-top character he is.

Here is the link and some juicy bits I am pulling out of it. It is a pretty thorough article. Reading the whole thing is suggested.

Also, it sure solidifies some things I’ve always thought about the whole Self Help Industry and its ties to Christianity.

Politico - The Power of Trump’s Positive Thinking

Donald Trump is a self-help apostle. He always has tried to create his own reality by saying what he wants to be true. Where many see failure, Trump sees only success, and expresses it out loud, again and again.

“We have the votes” to pass a new health care bill, he said last month even though he and Republicans didn’t then and still don’t.

“We get an A-plus,” he said last week of his and his administration’s response to the devastating recent hurricanes as others doled out withering reviews.

“I’ve had just about the most legislation passed of any president, in a nine-month period, that’s ever served,” he said this week in an interview with Forbes, contradicting objective metrics and repeating his frequent and dubious assertion of unprecedented success throughout the first year of his first term as president.

The reality is that Trump is in a rut. His legislative agenda is floundering. His approval ratings are historically low. He’s raging privately while engaging in noisy, internecine squabbles. He’s increasingly isolated. And yet his fact-flouting declarations of positivity continue unabated. For Trump, though, these statements are not issues of right or wrong or true or false. They are something much more elemental. They are a direct result of the closest thing the stubborn, ideologically malleable celebrity businessman turned most powerful person on the planet has ever had to a devout religious faith. This is not his mother’s flinty Scottish Presbyterianism but Norman Vincent Peale’s “power of positive thinking,” the utterly American belief in self above all else and the conviction that thoughts can be causative, that basic assertion can lead to actual achievement.

In 1988, in a seminal paper within the subject area, psychologists from UCLA and Southern Methodist University wrote that “considerable research evidence suggests that overly positive self-evaluations, exaggerated perceptions of control or mastery, and unrealistic optimism are characteristic of normal human thought.” They added that “positive illusions may be especially useful when an individual receives negative feedback or is otherwise threatened.” They warned, though, of inherent risks and limitations: “For example, a falsely positive sense of accomplishment may lead people to pursue careers and interests for which they are ill-suited.”

Peale’s cheery, simple tips allowed Trump’s father to alleviate his anxieties and mitigate the effects of his innately awkward, dour disposition. Emboldened, Fred Trump banked hundreds of millions of dollars building single-family houses and then immense apartment buildings in New York’s outer boroughs. Peale appealed to the elder Trump, too, because both men embraced conservative, right-wing, us-versus-them politics—an important but often forgotten portion of Peale’s M.O.

A generation down, Peale appealed to Donald Trump because Trump idolized his father, and because what Fred Trump drilled into his most eager, most ambitious, most like-minded son—be a killer; be a king; be a winner, not a loser—is what made that son so receptive to the teachings of Peale. Born in 1946, Donald Trump’s childhood was spent in a house with white columns and nine bathrooms and a live-in maid and chauffeur in Jamaica Estates, Queens. Sometimes, when it rained or snowed, he did his paper route from the back of his father’s limousine.

Peale was far from universally popular. One psychiatrist dubbed The Power of Positive Thinking “saccharine terrorism.” And during the 1952 presidential campaign, the Democratic nominee made his feelings plain. “Speaking as a Christian,” the brainy Adlai Stevenson said at a Baptist convention in Texas, “I would like to say that I find the Apostle Paul appealing and the Apostle Peale appalling.” But Peale permanently altered the way many Americans worship. His was a precursor to the prosperity gospel espoused today by, say, the toothy Joel Osteen. “By repeatedly equating business acumen with piety, uncertainty with religious doubt, and personal and cultural failure with godlessness, Peale and his admirers helped to redefine religious Americans as socially superior winners,”

That should give you a good idea of the article.

Representative Diane Black was an emergency room nurse. However, conservative libertarian religion trumps “do no harm.”

You would be unsurprised to learn that healthcare businesses are her biggest donors.

No, I know. It’s just JFC. I mean the whole “Let’s coddle businesses that refuse to serve LGBT people” was bad enough but this. This is unfrigging real. What’s next? A bill that would allow the cops or fire departments to choose not to help you?

I don’t even know the word for this ideology. It’s something that combines the worst of Objectivism and a theocracy.

No, I know. It’s just JFC. I mean the whole “Let’s coddle businesses that refuse to serve LGBT people” was bad enough but this. This is unfrigging real. What’s next? A bill that would allow the cops or fire departments to choose not to help you?

That would be libertarianism … “Sir before we can put the fire out we will need either your insurance or credit card information …”

See also the book Jennifer Government, a murder mystery that becomes more political intrigue. I ordered it on interlibrary loan some years ago to read; while dated (it shows the Soviet Union as still in existence for example), the book is a very good example of how libertarian governance would actually work.

Every so often I wander over to the dark side to see what the denizens at FR are up to. I never stay long; just a quick recon.

Lately I’ve noticed many have stopped calling themselves conservatives. Instead they prefer the label “normals”. The good Christians of the heartland who, long ago, abandoned the true teachings of the Bible. The citizens of down-at-heel towns who voted for Trump because he sold the snake oil they so desperately want to believe is effective. The good ol’ southern boys who so despised being governed by a black man that they will cheer the dismantling of the very programs they benefit from. The closeted bigots bitterly clinging to the remnants of failed rebellion. These are what the far right now consider to be “normal Americans”.

His Keystone XL Pipeline approval doesn’t mean crap as long as TransCanada still can’t get a route across Nebraska. As long as our state stands in the way, they won’t be completing that project. (TransCanada lost in our state supreme court because the legislature violated the state constitution in approving a route. The legislature is uninterested in giving TransCanada the time of day now.)

That article is a good example of this thinking. The author wants it to be true.

You seem to be saying the author hopes his facts might be true because he wants them to be true.

I think this little part of the article touches on what the article wants to achieve, to me at least.

Short-term. Trump’s version of his own reality, some insist, ultimately will crash against something more real. “In the end, I think reality is like gravity. It exerts its own force,” said Peter Wehner, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and a consistent conservative critic of Trump. “The power of positive thinking can only carry you so far.”

He offered an example. “I could use the power of positive thinking and convince myself that I’m going to be the starting center for the Golden State Warriors,” Wehner said, “but it’s not going to happen.”

To carry this metaphor a small step forward, though, Trump is actually currently the starting center for the Golden State Warriors. (He’s definitely not Stephen Curry.) Wehner granted that. “And his supporters,” he said, “probably think he’s scoring 25 points and a game and averaging 11 rebounds.”

Trump is the Starting President of America.

What are his stats?

Is all the positive thinking that could have gotten him in the office helping or hurting America in the case it got us Trump and is it helping Trump learn and be effective once he got the job? Or, is it a hinderance and now becoming a negative?

I think that is the debate of the article. But again, it is just my interpretation.

I remember all too well how Peale shot his mouth off in the 1960 Presidential campaign and attacked Kennedy for being a Catholic. That was when the whole world saw what a bigot Norman Vincent Peale was.

Here’s a reminder for those who either were not born or who need to remember from Wikipedia:

Peale was invited to attend a strategy conference of about thirty evangelicals in Montreux, Switzerland, by its host, the well-known evangelist Billy Graham, in mid-August 1960. There they agreed to kick off a group called The National Conference of Citizens for Religious Freedom in Washington the following month. On September 7, Peale served as its chairman and spoke for 150 Protestant clergymen, opposing the election of John F. Kennedy as president.[30] “Faced with the election of a Catholic,” Peale declared, “our culture is at stake.”[26] In a written manifesto Peale and his group also declared JFK would serve the interests of the Catholic Church before the interests of the United States: “It is inconceivable that a Roman Catholic president would not be under extreme pressure by the hierarchy of his church to accede to its policies with respect to foreign interests,” and that the election of a Catholic might even end free speech in America.[26] Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr responded “Dr. Peale and his associates … show blind prejudice.”[26] Protestant Episcopal Bishop James Pike echoed Niebuhr: “Any argument which would rule out a Roman Catholic just because he is Roman Catholic is both bigotry and a violation of the constitutional guarantee of no religious test for public office.”[31] The Peale statement was further condemned by former President Harry Truman, the Board of Rabbis, and other leading Protestants such as Paul Tillich and John C. Bennett.[31] Peale recanted his statements and was later fired by his own committee. As conservative William F. Buckley succinctly described the fallout: “When … The Norman Vincent Peale Committee was organized, on the program that a vote for Kennedy was a vote to repeal the First Amendment to the Constitution, the Jesuits fired their Big Bertha, and Dr. Peale fled from the field, mortally wounded.”[32] Peale subsequently went into hiding and threatened to resign from his church.[33] The fallout continued as Peale was condemned in a statement by one hundred religious leaders and dropped as a syndicated columnist by a dozen newspapers.[33] After the uproar the pastor backed off from further formal partisan commitments.

Oh and this was when Mom started to sour on Billy Graham KKKraKKKer, too! Graham was Peale’s partner in spreading the anti-Catholic shit.

Almost half of Republicans want war with North Korea, a new poll says

There was a pretty striking finding in Thursday’s Quinnipiac University poll: Fully 46 percent of Republicans - a plurality - said they would support a preemptive strike against North Korea.

That’s nearly half of President Donald Trump’s party that is ready for war - today - with Kim Jong Un, his nuclear weapons and all. (Forty-one percent said they opposed a pre-emptive strike.)

It’s no surprise that Republicans are more hawkish on this than Democrats are; that’s generally the case on foreign policy. But basically nobody is talking about the prospect of a strike right now. Even when Trump talks about it, he’s responding to North Korea threatening the United States or its allies.

Yet it also seems possible that Trump’s ramped-up rhetoric on this could be having an effect on his base. Trump in August promised “fire and fury” if North Korea ran afoul of him. Last month, he threatened in his speech at the United Nations to “totally destroy” the country - a threat that seemed to tie average North Koreans to their government’s demise. He has repeatedly called Kim “Rocket Man” and generally proved fond of the kind of saber-rattling we expect from the other side of this standoff.

Exactly.

The way authoritarian states establish themselves is to try to overwhelm the populace with so many things at once, the populace despairs of returning to normalcy.

Those authoritarians who fail do so because those who would oppose them do not allow said authoritarians to overwhelm them with bullshit.

Things such as the Women’s March on Washington, the March for Science, &c show that the authoritarians and Christian fascists have opposition numbering in the tens of millions.

Aside from running for office or supporting someone who will oppose authoritarianism, the goal should be to focus on one or a few things which you can oppose. Others will deal with other things. Hillary Clinton’s campaign slogan of “Stronger Together” is actually a good blueprint for opposing Christian fascism under Mike Pence or authoritarianism under Donald Trump.

From Wiki:

The flag of the state of Mississippi was first adopted by the U.S. state of Mississippi in April 1894, replacing the unofficial flag that had been adopted in 1861 when Mississippi was a Confederate state. The flag was subsequently repealed in 1906 but remained in de facto use. When a referendum failed for a new design in April 2001, the state legislature voted to readopt the historic design that same month.

They are in that Twitter thread.

Additionally, ICE did raids on shelters during Hurricane Harvey. They lied then, there is no reason to believe they are not lying now.

Apparently to the conservative commentators (or rodent copulators from out of the country), being undocumented carries the death penalty by fire.

I believe they call that “compassionate conservatism” (which is exactly why I have never been a conservative).

Not even that. Failure to present at a customs house (the actual law in question) carries the penalty of a fine and deportation, and is considered a civil offence (similar to a traffic ticket).

The only time it is a crime is if the point of avoiding a customs house is for smuggling (whether goods or people).

No sane nation would jail people who cross a border without proper permission: Jails cost a ton of money.

Of course.

Watch him and Deandre Harris be the only ones to actually end up with jail time for this. Yes, even the murderer who ran down the crowd will probably get off with a slap on the wrist. Because our country is hopelessly racist and this is what happens.

My computer’s four CPUs are averaging 30% usage, with BOINC running distributed computing projects, five tabs open here (this one, plus two YouTube videos and two Twitter feeds), and a bunch of minor programs such as my ship’s bells and NIST atomic clock reading program.

Austria Shifts To The Right As It Elects A 31-Year-Old Conservative Leader

VIENNA, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Young conservative star Sebastian Kurz is on track to become Austria’s next leader, projections of Sunday’s parliamentary election result showed, but his party is well short of a majority and could seek an alliance with the far right.

Kurz, who is just 31, campaigned on an anti-immigration platform so strict that the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) accused him of plagiarism. That appears to have succeeded in drawing some voters away from the FPO two years after Austria was swept up in Europe’s migration crisis, which boosted the FPO in polls.

Kurz’s People’s Party (OVP) is in the lead on 30.5 percent, with its current coalition partner, the Social Democrats, on 26.2 percent, just behind the FPO on 26.8 percent, a projection by pollster SORA said shortly after polls closed, based on an early count of 49 percent of non-postal ballots.

Seems like we’re going to be partying like it’s 1939 again soon.

Tiffany Trump appeared at Donald Trump campaign events, appeared at the RNC, &c.

If the only reason she is supporting him is that she’s afraid she would be cut out of a will, she is morally bankrupt. She did not denounce his birthirism, his cat-grabbing, his racism.

Nope, no slack for Tiffany. She benefits from the maladministration.

I have to wonder how her fellow classmates at Georgetown feel about her. I know when I was in law school, one of our classmates posed topless for Playboy’s “Girls of the Southwest Conference” (gee, I am dating myself here). We women generally gave her the side-eye. I remember she used to show up for First Amendment law, wearing a big old gold cross and sitting in the front row. I wonder what happened to her.

When a rich person gets mugged in a bad part of town, there may be some commentary to the effect that wearing a giant gold Rolex or flashing a wad of $100 bills there isn’t a very good idea, if that what actually happened. But somehow society manages this without it sinking to the level of blaming the victim. The responsibility of the robbers for their crime is always absolute, no matter what the victim did.

Rape should be handled the same way, as much as possible. Consent being a basically a ‘he said’ ‘she said’ issue does make it an intrinsically more difficult case than robbery. One reform to consider is that if the case is allowed to get into the victim’s past history, then it should be allowed to get into the accused’s past history to the same degree. Conversely, if the accused’s history is off limits, then so is the victim’s.

I cannot let this go by without comment. Bullshit. A victim’s past consensual sexual history is NEVER okay to trot out to shame or discredit her (or him) because it has no bearing whatsoever on the case. The only thing that past behavior may apply to in a rape case would be a history of proven false accusations.

Rapists are repeat offenders. The power is what gets them off. Past accusations and convictions are entirely applicable and shouldn’t be off limits. Ever.
