And Now, an Exceptional NPR Tiny Desk Concert by Randy Newman

Where is my wandering boy?

Oct. 10, 2017 | Bob Boilen — I think Randy Newman is a national treasure. If he was just a funny guy making music, I’d be OK with that, but his wit is sardonic, satirical and politically on point. Mixing politics and humor with music is usually about the punchline, and his punchlines even make the singer smile.

Randy Newman paints lasting portraits of places and people, all the while poking fun and highlighting injustice, stupidity, power and humanity and he’s been doing it for half a century. Here are the opening lines to his recently released song “Putin”:

“Putin puttin’ his pants on / One leg at a time / You mean he’s just like a regular fella, huh? / He ain’t nothing like a regular fella.”
His new album, Dark Matter, is his first batch of songs in nine years and there’s more than the usual biting Newman wit; there’s also a tender heart. And watching the 73-year-old songwriter amble to the Tiny Desk and singing these words, had me crying for sentiment so full of heart:

“I’m not much to talk to, and I know how I look / What I know ‘bout life comes out of a book / But of all of the people there are in the world / She chose me.”
Watch this grand master play.

Set List

“Putin”
“She Chose Me”
“It’s A Jungle Out There”
“Wandering Boy”

MUSICIAN

Randy Newman (vocals, piano)

You would not be surprised that at FOX News’s Website, there is no mention of Donald Trump’s horrendous statement.

On top of their Website is a claim that the people at Fusion GPS (the firm that developed the Steele Dossier) are in the habit of smearing people.

Firm behind anti-Trump dossier labeled critic a ‘pedophile,’ ‘extortionist’ and ‘drug trafficker’

The self-described ‘strategic intelligence’ firm Fusion GPS that was behind the controversial anti-Trump dossier has a track record of intimidation and smear tactics, according to congressional testimony and the firsthand account of a London-based Venezuelan journalist.

So much Trump news today and all bad. Israel destroyed a Syrian SAM radar and control vehicles after they had dared to fire a large nearly obsolete anti air missile at Israeli warplanes.
thedrive.com
The punchline is that the Syrian air defense network is integrated with the Russian installations there. Seems Russia has no taste to escalate against us or Israel at this particular time.

OT: Yesterday I discussed my problem with Microsoft Office losing support this month. After weighing recommendations, I went to the computer shop in Scottsbluff (along with doing a whole bunch of other stuff).

Concerning my questions about updating Office 2016, they called Microsoft to ask about their Website (since the computer shop has the ability to call Microsoft and ask them questions). Microsoft cleared up the update question for me, so I purchased the Home version of Office 2016. (It does not have Access and Publisher - I only use Access for my lists of songs I play and have only used Publisher once, so I don’t think I really need to pay $200 more to get those.)

It’s warmer here now at 49° and supposed to get down to 40°.

Amongst other things I did today, I stopped at a tire shop to order new tires for my car (mine are down to the wear bars and winter is coming).

The mechanic saw the car sitting in front of the shop and asked “is that your car?” He then walked out to check it out, rubbing his hands together like a banker who just found a pile of gold …

Huckaboo is going to simply declare that it’s absolutely false, that it’s obviously false because the source is not only a woman and black but a Democrat atop those, and that her boss gave words of sincerity to this widow that Obama never could. She’ll basically dare the widow to come forward to call her a liar, the poor woman knowing that doing so will turn her into the target for vicious attacks by Trump and his hooded lynch mob.

And Fuckface Von Clownstick sleeps like a fucking baby at night because he’s an unfeeling sociopath. What a goddamned disgrace.

He’s not the worst. He’s bad enough, but not the worst.

It’s every last Republican politician who supports him and will not call him out.

We see an occasional flash of sentience, such as Sens. McCain or Corker, when they call out some specific thing, then go right back to supporting him. Not a one of them will publicly say there is anything wrong with any of this.

It might even be possible he could behave more like an actual politician than a fourth-grade bully if one of them, even one, would insist on it on pain of non-support of his agenda (such as it is), or impeachment.

But not one conservative politician, even so-called moderates as Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski will call him out and say “no more, you’re done.”

The GOP politicians are worse, because they allow it. They do not care if he tears apart the country as long as they get their damn tax cuts and wealthcare for billionaires.

It was apparent when Trump spouted that initial lie about previous presidents not contacting the families of fallen service members (my mother still has the telegram from President Johnson).

Mitch McConnell just stood there and smiled. He could have leaned over and said something quietly to Trump to allow him a chance to correct that. McConnell didn’t.

Trump might be a cartoon villain, but the rest are just villains.

Yeah, it doesn’t make much sense unless said documents are classified in some way, or the possessor is unauthorised to have them.

I have a bunch of government documents on my computer, from state water test results to a searchable PDF of all the ordinances of my village, to a bunch of information about my father’s missions from Operation Market Time in Vietnam that I got from FOIA requests directly from his P-3 squadron.

FOX is trying (with lying by omission) by conflating “government documents” with “unlawfully-possessed government documents.”

They are also deflecting from Trump’s Dumpster Fire today, but that’s another issue.

Now if Anthony Weiner actually does have government documents on his cell phone (and I’m not sure how you could get that many on a cell phone, though I don’t know how cell phones work), and he is not authorised to have them, this liberal would want him interrogated and prosecuted.

That would be the difference between me and the talking heads at FOX: They don’t care about the daily criminality apparently displayed by the maladministration. I care about people who are or were in the Democratic Party doing unlawful things.

And no GOP politician has said a damn thing about this, and FOX News Channel is doing everything it can to deflect from this monstrous statement he made. I don’t ever want to hear a GOP politician or Trump supporter ever again claim they care about the troops, veterans, or Gold Star Families unless they condemn this action, demand an apology, or move to set aside this man from office.

I’ve been in a back-and-forth with the state Gold Star Mothers president. (I went through this when Donald Trump attacked the Khan family, and Carl Paladino compared Gold Star Family members to terrorism supporters a couple days later.)

She is in a bind: The Gold Star Mothers organisation is a Congressionally-chartered organisation. As such, they cannot speak out against the president or other politicians who make such horrible statements.

I told her, “I can, and I will.” I might be part of the organisation, but I am also a (local) politician, and I do not speak for the Gold Star Mothers group.

I guess it’s time to limber up my letter to the editor pen again… .

US veterans sue drug companies over Iraq bribes (Goes to the Financial Times):

Several US veterans and relatives of American soldiers killed or wounded in Iraq on Tuesday sued five pharmaceutical and medical equipment makers, saying the companies in effect funded an Iraqi terrorist militia that killed hundreds of American soldiers in the years following the 2003 US-led invasion.

The civil lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, accuses the five multinationals of routinely bribing Iraqi Ministry of Health officials to win drug contracts when the office was controlled by the virulently anti-American Jaysh al-Mahdi or Mahdi Army.

Named in the suit are the parent companies and subsidiaries of AstraZeneca, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Roche Holding.

Meanwhile Canada is making fun of Trump’s derp over NFL players kneeling in protest of police violence during the national anthem.

Unclear Whether Curler Is Kneeling for Anthem or Just Practising (goes to the CBC):

Confusion reigned during the semi-finals of the Whole Wheat Kraft Dinner Invitational Bonspiel this week, when it appeared that Gus Spellington, skip for the Moosejaw squad, may have been taking a knee during the national anthem to make a social statement.

Or else he was practicing his delivery. There would really be no way to tell. They look the same.

This network’s tradition of not interviewing curlers at any time or for any reason prevents us from gathering further information, but rest assured we will continue trying to guess.

The NFL has decided that it will not force players to stand for the playing of our National Anthem. Total disrespect for our great country!

We have a few questions about Ivanka Trump’s “punk phase”

In her mom Ivana’s new memoir Raising Trump, Ivanka Trump describes what she refers to as her “punk phase.” It didn’t involve protesting, or blasting Dead Kennedys records in her room, or chartering a private jet to London to walk in the footsteps of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. No, it involved dyeing her hair blue once and being sad when Kurt Cobain died, as detailed in NME. And we have a few questions:
1) Is there a hair salon in Trump Tower called Nice’n Easy?

Because if you’ve ever spent an afternoon or 10 bleaching your hair, then dyeing it with Manic Panic, ruining every towel within a half-mile radius in the process, you know this is utter bullshit:

Max Boot is beside himself.
latimes.com

Trump has withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, handing China a gift in its attempts to dominate its neighbors; the Paris climate accords, setting back efforts to combat global warming; and now UNESCO, citing anti-Israel bias just as that organization was selecting its first Jewish head, France’s former culture minister Audrey Azoulay. Trump didn’t quite withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, but he did refuse to certify that it is in America’s interest and threatened to withdraw in the near future if it cannot be toughened in ways that Iran is unlikely to accede to. Now Trump is making impossible demands of Mexico and Canada during negotiations over the future of the North America Free Trade Agreement, leading many observers to suspect he is deliberately sabotaging a treaty that has fostered closer economic and political ties among the three nations of North America.

In all these instances, Trump has acted in the face of nearly unanimous opposition from America’s allies, isolating the United States in a way that it has never been isolated in the post-1945 era.

Here’s why some Americans might soon need a passport to fly within the U.S.

Frequent fliers who take international trips know to bring along their passport, but what about just for traveling around the country?

Beginning early next year, the REAL ID Act will tighten requirements to fly, and some states’ driver’s licenses might not make the cut.

Here’s what you should know about the act.

A map of the states, issued by the TSA, reveals which states are compliant with the new ID rules is included in the link.

Yes it’s a risk that you’re fully aware of when you sign up but I can’t help but to think of the warmth Abraham Lincoln showed in the Bixby Letter or when Harry Truman met my distant relatives the Stranks in 1948 a few years after cousin Mike was KIA and immortalized in the Iwo Jima flag photo. Which is why we need a national ID card: one for citizens and one for legal resident aliens. That would end all discussion about residence status or voting.

God, this fucking hurts.

Some of you may have no clue who this band is but the Hip are freaking National treasures in Canada. These guys were my soundtrack all through high school and college. No band as meant as much to me as they have.

I had the wonderful privilege of getting to see them on their final tour in my hometown last summer when I went home for my brothers wedding.

Now I’ll never be able to see them again. I can’t even put into words how much that stings. At least I’ll always have the music and the memories.

That sucks. Had they revealed his illness so you knew it was coming, or did they hide it from the public?

LGBT rights groups and Democratic senators have raised concerns over comments from Mateer, first published by CNN’s KFile, in which he described transgender children as evidence of “Satan’s plan,” lamented that states were banning conversion therapy, and argued that sanctioning same-sex marriage would lead to polygamy and bestiality.
This alone should disqualify him. What a frigging nut job.

The mechanism I hope for is the people of this nation waking up and demanding action. Its the only mechanism we have (but if tRump was found guilty of collusion I’m sure we will need to take a closer look at those he appointed, and why they were appointed).

“Demand” is good, but without action it doesn’t do shit. I hope more than 2/3 actually drag their asses to the polls in an off-year election.

Here’s why some Americans might soon need a passport to fly within the U.S.

A map of the states, issued by the TSA, reveals which states are compliant with the new ID rules is included in the link.

My son, who just moved to Kentucky for college, is having to get one. He’ll fly here to Texas in December, but fly back in January, when we think he will need one.

My priest slammed this kind of thing hard in his sermon on Sunday. It’s especially disgusting since there are places in this world where it is dangerous to be openly Christian but I doubt any of those whiners would have the courage of their convictions if we forced them to go there.

But instead they whine that not getting the political decision they want is persecution. < spit >

In this case, I’d uninstall and go to the website and scroll down a bit further to where a couple of the older versions are available (it shows me 5.4.2 & 5.3.6 for 64 bit windows) and I’d try either one of those and wait a version or two before attempting an upgrade. Michael Bay is supposed to be a total asshole to work with. I don’t know if it was just against women (Megan Fox specifically), or if he was a jerkwad to everyone.

I am not defending asshole behavior in any fashion, but there are a lot of creative types who are real assholes. I’m a big fan of Gilliam’s movies. Before driving over him, I’d like to learn a bit more about what she meant by “endless bullying” by him.

Some directors are extremely tough on actors trying to get them to give more than they are, maybe not understanding the part as the director sees it, etc.

Some actors/actresses are prima donnas and don’t like taking direction.

Then comes the interpretations of what was going on while making the film. Lots of bent egos.

I found it odd, that as she is talking about Weinstein there is an aside remark about Gilliam. So it must have left an impression.

I think if you were to ask many actors about their relationship with the directors you would find a lot of warring between the two. Then the movie gets done and if it was a great movie both sides will eventually admit that the push and pull is what made it work.

If it wasn’t good, then the knives come out and they trash each other.

“The director didn’t want me in the role and let’s just say he wasn’t too subtle about showing his dislike for me,” she said. “Once the film came out and didn’t do so well, he blamed me for absolutely everything. It was pretty appalling, and it made me want to not work for a while.”

Headey also said in that 2007 interview that she was extremely relieved when she was cast in 300, which was released a year after The Brothers Grimm and helped put Headey on the map five years before she was cast in Game of Thrones.

I guess we’ll never know unless we get a better feel for what her definition of bullying is. Terry Gilliam might not be the easiest guy to work for, but there are a lot of successful people that are tough to work for. He could be a bully too. Him getting tossed into the article sort of paints him like Weinstein.

It was a great perfornamce, but I don’t think creating art justifies breaking actresses.

Male directors can try to justify the behavior however they like but the giveaway is that this tends to only happen to women. The presumption is that men can be conversed with on an intellectual level but women are somehow inherently less capable creatures that need to be manipulated instead of reasoned with. It’s disgusting and it needs to be called out no matter who is doing it.

I hate that we’re dragging dead soldiers in as gotchas, but Trump started it:

After her Army son died in an armored vehicle rollover in Syria in May, Sheila Murphy says, she got no call or letter from President Donald Trump, even as she waited months for his condolences, wrote to him to say “some days I don’t want to live,” and still heard nothing. […]

The Associated Press found relatives of two soldiers who died overseas during Trump’s presidency who said they never received a call or a letter from him, as well as relatives of a third who did not get a call. And proof is plentiful that Barack Obama and George W. Bush — saddled with far more combat casualties than the roughly two dozen so far under Trump, took painstaking steps to write, call or meet bereaved military families.

Trump has made some calls, to be sure, and has even made them in ways that didn’t leave the families wounded and offended. But there’s no evidence that his policy on contacting grieving military families is dramatically different than those of Bush or Obama—except that Trump alone has tried to gain political mileage out of saying he does it better than anyone else, and Trump alone has a history of publicly feuding with a Gold Star family and being excited to be given a veteran’s Purple Heart because he’d always wanted one and it was “much easier” to be given one than to earn one. And of course, as we know, when it comes to war heroes, Trump “like[s] people who weren’t captured.”

Pretty sure everyone. Bruce Willis said he’d never work with Bay again after Armageddon.

After Titanic, Kate Winslet said she’d never work with James Cameron again unless she was given a “big bag of cash” first. Cameron has a reputation as a perfectionist autocrat on the set, though in some fairness to Cameron, he admits that as a director, he’s pretty much a dictator.

Frank,

I think you could find cases of male directors and male actors having the same battles.

You might find some female directors that can be tough on either sex too.

Not excusing it, but artists can be emotional and demanding. Why did the Beatles break up? Other bands? Getting a variety of egos that all think they know best on the same page is historically tough.

That’s strange — mine only shows 5.3.6 and 5.4.2, with 5.3.7 listed as a pre-release version.

The one time I tried their “early adopter/power user” version, it wouldn’t work at all, so I’d druther not try it again.

My point is that the battles generally aren’t the same. Sure, they’ll fight, but you generally won’t see them attempt to deliberately undermine a male actor’s psyche for the sake of getting a specific performance. In large part it’s because of how traditional male and female roles are defined in society, men have to be strong and women are assumed to be weak.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump was up early once again trouncing the Constitution, screwing over Gold Star Parents (again; this is a habit with him since he has no clue how sacrifice actually works), and basically lying about everything he does and has done.

I could care less what Ivanka’s musical tastes are (not that I believe it for a moment that she ever had a punk phase). That’s a deflection to keep people from focusing on the fact that she should have been charged for felony fraud on real estate transactions in NYC a few years back along with her brother. It was only a well placed donation by daddy’s lawyer that seems to have ironed out that whole mess.

Speaking of messes, the shitshow in Puerto Rico continues (literally and figurative). 82.3% of the island is still without power more than a month after landfall of Maria, and FEMA said 25% would have power restored. There’s no chance that’s happening, and 25% was insanely low to start. It’s unconscionable how the Admin is handling the disaster response.

Every aspect of it shows him and his admin failing millions of Americans in dire need.

You know who’s actually doing a good job? Former Yankee legend Jorge Posada. He’s actually organized flights to get people who are ill care in Miami and/or reuniting those folks with their relatives here on the mainland.

The US military has logistical capabilities that aren’t getting used. They have the assets to make care available. They can set up mobile hospitals and clinics, as well as ferry people to the USNS Comfort. That they aren’t doing so is a failure of leadership and scope. FEMA and the DoD need to be working in concert, and that seems to have completely collapsed.

Every other natural disaster before Trump seemed to have regular updates on how the DoD was working with FEMA and local authorities to get aid to those in need - whether it was after Katrina or Sandy or any of the other natural disasters requiring federal military assistance, or to disasters overseas (like Indonesia, Thailand, Haiti, or Japan after quakes (and/or tsnuami) hit those countries). Mission sorties, the types of personnel involved, people helped, food and water brought in, etc.

All that is missing. It’s a news vacuum and it’s happening to millions of Americans all because Trump would rather golf than do the job.

Of course, Trump’s supporters think he’s doing exactly what he needs to be doing - which is to fuck up functioning government because who needs disaster relief when you can give estate tax cuts to millionaires and stick everyone else with the bill.
