Playing to the stereotype of a blonde woman not having any clue. Thing is, the stereotype works because FNC’s target audience have no fucking clue themselves. All they know is black men are kneeling, Trump is raging against them, so obviously the kneeling is the problem.

It’s like a perfect private club to which you can go and enjoy the most intelligent and experienced and informed and just plain sympathetic company. Anymouse 🌹  Oct 18, 2017 • 6:37:03pm

Yeah, this is a really stupid idea from a really stupid newspaper writer.

If Mike Pompeo Leaves the CIA, Trump Should Replace Him with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos (more at the Washington Examiner):

President Trump should ask Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to be his next CIA director.

If, that is, Axios is correct in reporting that the president might replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with current CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Axios also suggests that Pompeo might be replaced at the CIA by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. But while I recognize Cotton’s intellect and hard-to-match proven patriotism, I believe Bezos would be a better choice to lead the CIA.

For a start, Bezos’ record at Amazon is one of bold organizational risks and innovative reforms. As evidenced by his purchases of Whole Foods and the Washington Post, the CEO also defines himself by relentless creativity; looking forward to the next market gap and associated opportunity. The data validates Bezos’ leadership: Amazon’s stock price has more than quadrupled over the last five years, and the Washington Post’s website has seen record growth in readers, reading time, and advertising revenue.

Bezos’ leadership style is just what “the Agency” needs.

He opened his yap last year, calling for a boycott and proclaiming the protests were “disrespectful.” The only thing that changed between then and now is he’s now in political office, so he could present the whole thing as an insult to him personally.

Yeah. the hard thing to point out is this. “However indirectly” is exactly the wrong standard to measure by, as in like many things, we get to declare and define our own statements via protest. Like your dad gets to define what it means when he does something. His critics don’t. The bigots can define their own actions only.

It’s easy enough to answer when you look at the same polls from the previous administration. They look up “US President,” they see a white guy, so they’re convinced that everything is good. The only time they get pissed at a white guy in the office is when they personally are getting the shit end of the stick.

As most lizards know, I’m an olds. Been around the block enough times to wear a rut in the cement sidewalk. Seen some shit.

I remember from childhood the McCarthy mess. It went on and on. In junior high our civics teacher, a great young man, allowed as how he hated Communism as much as anybody, but he didn’t see a Communist under every bed. Next term he was gone.

I remember all the segregation shit, up close, from the fifties through the seventies and into Reagan. I remember Impeach Earl Warren billboards on local highways as well as others claiming Ike was a Commie, so was JFK, so was MLK. I remember the assassinations of JFK, RFK, and MLK. I remember Goldwater.

I remember Wallace and Nixon and Reagan from the time that jerk was governor of California.

I knew people, lots of them, who voted for David Duke to be governor of Louisiana.

I could go on, but like Faulkner said, the past isn’t dead, it’s not even past.

My point is that never in my opinion based on long experience has America been closer to Naziism than it is now. We’ve got to fight against this in every way we can. Even if “fight” becomes literal.

Marriage is not something to be entered lightly, especially when you’re mature enough to know exactly what that really means. So the ceremony was traditional, serious and formal: The bride and groom vowed to love, comfort and honor but not obey. They exchanged rings and a chaste kiss, and then everybody applauded after they were pronounced husband and wife. And yes, they were beaming.

Just think how versatile the phrase “Happy Holidays” is”:

It covers:
- Halloween (Oct. 31)
- All Saints Day (Nov. 1)
- Daylight Savings Time Ending Day (Nov. 5)
- Election Day (Nov. 7) Oops - not a Holiday but should be
- Veterans Day (Nov. 11)
- Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23)
- Chanukah (Dec. 13)
- Winter Begins (Dec. 21) Also Winter Solstice - a Holiday in Alaska as the days start getting longer
- The Real Merry Christmas Day (Dec. 25)
- Boxing Day for the Brits and Canucks (Dec. 26)
- New Years Day (Jan. 1) Another oops, save that Happy Holiday for 2018

See, just one phase covers a whole shitload of “Holidays”. Just using “Happy Holidays” means you will never have to remember which Holiday comes next.

Kevin de Leon, the president pro ten of the California Senate is challenging Feinstein this year. Based on the list that wikipedia has for Republicans…

Declared
Timothy Charles Kalemkarian, perennial candidate
Caren Lancona, businesswoman
Stephen James Schrader, veteran

Potential
Kevin Faulconer, Mayor of San Diego
Caitlyn Jenner, 1976 Olympic gold medalist, television personality
Ashley Swearengin, former Mayor of Fresno

Declined
Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Governor of California

It’s entirely plausible that they will face off in the general (we have a blanket primary now). Faulconer has already declined a run for governor and promised to serve out his term as Mayor of San Diego. And Swearengin already declined a run for governor and decided against running last year in an open Senate race.

Kevin de Leon, the president pro ten of the California Senate is challenging Feinstein this year. Based on the list that wikipedia has for Republicans…

Faulconer has already declined a run for governor and promised to serve out his term as Mayor of San Diego. And Swearengin already declined a run for governor and decided against running last year in an open Senate race.

I’m in DeLeon’s Senate district. I’ve talked with him and am very impressed. He will get my vote for Senator.

What ticks me off are these stupid term limits that folks were tricked into approving. It takes time to master the ability to pass legislation and now thanks to these asinine limits the real legislative power has shifted to lobbyists.

I still remember the racist commercials that were run for term limits that were aimed at then-Speaker Willie Brown. The Republican Dirt Machine cranked the racism up to 11 to get those term limits in so they could boot Brown out of the Speaker’s chair.

After they passed, I remember the Republicans had a bare majority in the State House and even then they couldn’t elect a Republican to be Speaker, Willie would always peel off a couple GOP members. Then the Republicans even recalled the renegade members and Willie still held on to the Speakership…

It’s Alabama so don’t hold your breath that Jones really stands a chance. If anything, polling showing Moore is neck and neck with Jones will be used by Moore to raise more $$$ from his knuckle-dragging, foaming at the mouth supporters. That and to drive them to vote. GOP and NRA don’t give a shit. They never did. They’re more interested in selling guns to people peddling on fear and “personal safety” when the reality is that crime is near historic lows across the nation, but those states with the lax gun laws and highest numbers of firearms ownership have the highest gun fatality rates per capita.

Guns don’t make anyone safer. They just hike the death toll.

Approval of these sorts of deal is ultimately invested solely with the President. Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. It’s been a month since Maria hit Puerto Rico, and the situation is grim.

FEMA said that they’d get 25% power restored to the island, which was absurdly low to begin with, but they couldn’t even get to that level. They’re not even at 20%. That’s absurd.

It’s also Trump’s failure and depraved indifference to the plight of millions of Americans in desperate need for immediate assistance.

Trump would rather fixate on the bullshit uranium story and attack the FBI than let anyone focus on the failures of this administration to protect and serve all Americans. At same time, we’ve got trolls pushing fake Melania stories and deflecting attention from the fact that Trump’s entire admin faces a reckoning after lawyering up over the Trump-Russia collusion, as investigations continue and the smart ones take the 5th and idiots like Sessions continue to perjure themselves and enter perjury traps (also because Sessions still doesn’t care that he’s not Trump’s personal lawyer and has no authority to assert privilege on certain issues).

GOP tax cut lies… in a nutshell:

Cruz claims the estate tax cut will help all Americans.

Fact is that the estate tax doesn’t affect 99.2% of Americans. It affects only those who have estates of more than $5.49 million (double for married filing jointly). In other words, this isn’t the family farm being at risk, but millionaires like Trump who would have to shell out millions in taxes.

The only ones who benefit are rich like Trump.

Everyone else gets fucked as the $269 billion that is collected over 10 years is lost. There’s no making up for that amount, and there’s no economic activity generated by the rich to make up for that lost revenue. None.

It’s $269 billion that could go to infrastructure work or disaster relief.

Cruz doesn’t care.
The GOP doesn’t care. They want their fucking tax cuts, all consequences be damned.

I’m sure a lot of these threats have been that. But yeah I can’t help but to think of Dana Loesch claiming gun control activists have threatened her. Something just didn’t seem right on that matter to me. VB makes a good point about the fake teacher outrage as well following LV.

Words have meanings. Did someone forget to include NOT or “No” when saying what could or couldn’t be going on with North Korea?

We are not discussing first strike.
We are not discussing limited strikes.
We are not discussing active military measures.

What I can believe that the admin (or any admin might do):

But we are implementing cyberwarfare and trying to undermine North Korea’s ability to sustain its economy through black market measures. We also want to subvert their industrial capacity to develop nukes.

The Nazis were actually pretty small potatoes in 1920’s Berlin. Munich and Nuremberg always had much bigger Nazi support. This sounds like an interesting show though. So I grudgingly (ha!) thank Drudge for this.

A 32” flat screen is $169, a 55” is $399. Hardly a luxury item.
I think they’re trying to exploit the way Conservatives don’t understand time, so to them the Democrats are the KKK and a flat screen is a $3000 plasma.

Wingnuts would rather see liberals annoyed than their own lives bettered by liberal policy.

And it’s not always really even “liberal policy” that gets the wingers riled up, it’s often policy that someone else (usually RW media) tells them is “liberal” and thus worthy only of immediate and total rejection.

ISTR reading once about a study of self-described “conservative voters” who were polled on various public-policy issues: and their approval/disapproval rates varied dramatically whether the “proposer” was cited as a Democrat or a Republican. Same policy, same wording, mind: just the differing source was enough to sway opinions….

The problem is, there seems to be precious little we can do that isn’t immediately and wholly negated by the total inoculation the GOP provides. Mueller may be our only long shot to finally get them to start abandoning this shitshow, and that’s only if they can be shamed out of their usual MO of shrugging, declaring IOKIYAR, and letting the slavish media parrot them per usual to normalize it anyway.

We pretty much have zero power here to enact anything.

That’s why I have to specify that contrarianism is a huge part of it too. They really don’t care about the policies, just reflexive opposition to it if it comes from one of those hated Libby Libs or Dems. Long as they lose, GOP feels they win, even if they lose out worse eventually. Their only goal is hate.

Feral cats

Who would eat you if you stopped moving long enough

girlfriend had a cabin out in the country. with a cat flap…she went away and asked her dad to come by and tend to the cats…dad managed to set the flap so that it opened only in…when she came back, about a dozen neighborhood cats were locked in her place

GOP tax cut lies… in a nutshell:

[Embedded content]

Further it is neither unfair nor unaffordable

We need to be raising taxes not lowering them; I’d like to see the tax rates that were in effect on 12/31/1959 put back in place because it was Kennedy lowering those rates that started this slide into fiscal idiocy in the first place.

I hate that they need to step out of well-deserved retirements, whether we agreed with them or not. But the nation needs reminding of what a real president looks and acts like, even the ones that did not seem all that presidential at the time. Because I tell ya, I smile a little fondly when I see W. now.

I enjoyed In Search Of… when I was a kid - I grew up watching it - and I still do. Though I’m disappointed that the original theme music was replaced in later airings.

Rob Lowe just did a reality series with his sons, looking for UFOs and ghosts and bigfoot. One of the sons is super-skeptic, the other son (and Rob) are very “I want to believe, I hope it’s true”. They never find anything, but they seem to have a lot of fun trying.

These wealthy institutions are quietly financing white nationalism

Neither Mercer’s involvement in Breitbart, nor his support for Yiannopoulos, nor charges of discrimination, have appeared to negatively impact his business. Renaissance Technologies now manages $45 billion in assets, up from $27 billion at the start 2016, according to Forbes. Outside investors pay a hefty fee for the privilege of accessing a Renaissance fund and a good deal of that money ultimately ends up in Mercer’s pocket.

The identity of Renaissance’s investors has largely remained secret. The company is not obligated to disclose their clients, who are generally required to invest at least $25 million. ThinkProgress, however, has been able to identify numerous investors in Renaissance by identifying institutions that, either voluntarily or by law, disclose how they invest their money. This includes reports from public pension plans, non-profit filings, and university endowment reports.

If you’re wondering about Yiannopoulos, he’s the tech editor for Breitbart, the conservative news outlet, who says things like “feminism is cancer” and, despite being gay, questions the role of biology in homosexuality. So he’s made a career of saying controversial things. Add him to the list of digital age oafs or truth-tellers, depending on your own point of view.

Of course, if you’re a DePaul student, you may still be unsure because the Yiannopoulos event collapsed after 15 minutes. Yiannopoulos was invited by the school’s College Republicans group, which seemed to anticipate a potentially rowdy audience. According to the DePaulia, extra security guards were hired, but the campus public safety department decided against trying to restore order. Chicago police, called to the scene, also were not asked to intervene.

GOP tax cut lies… in a nutshell:

[Embedded content]

It is unfair to characterize people who may have 5.49 to 10 million dollars “rich like Trump”. Professionals who grew up in modest circumstances without an inheritance, who are not even the top earners in their profession, but who earn a good income, perhaps in the $100,000 to $200,000 range, who are able to contribute the maximum to their 401(k) with a match from their employer, and who do not live extravagantly, can indeed accumulate that amount, mainly through their retirement funds. They are comfortable and affluent, but not truly rich. Their income does not even place them in the top 5%.

re: #259 Jay C

And it’s not always really even “liberal policy” that gets the wingers riled up, it’s often policy that someone else (usually RW media) tells them is “liberal” and thus worthy only of immediate and total rejection.

ISTR reading once about a study of self-described “conservative voters” who were polled on various public-policy issues: and their approval/disapproval rates varied dramatically whether the “proposer” was cited as a Democrat or a Republican. Same policy, same wording, mind: just the differing source was enough to sway opinions….

This may not be as dishonest as it sounds. We may all do something analogous: after all, the devil is in the details. Two policies that are dramatically different can often be described using the same superficial summary. If you hear that Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell support a policy, you would probably react differently than if it were supported by Adam Schiff or Al Franken. You would assume that if you looked at the details, the Ryan program would be designed to help the wealthy, while the Schiff program would be designed to help those more in need. This applies equally to editorials and opinion columnists. If they do everything you say, and then retire, will they die with that much money? If not, their estates won’t be that big, and wouldn’t be part of the group being talked about.

if you manage to accumulate 10m and die without any preplanning re the estate tax, your estate would owe appx 1.8m.

in todays environment, when you get into even 3, 4 or 5million in assets, it is incumbent on you to do some tax planning and thinking about this

For example, the GOP seems determined to force the ACA markets to fail, even though this seems bound to primarily hurt their own rural, older voters, all in the hopes the Democrats will get the blame. Completely nihilistic.

I understand, but I guess the point is that someone who pumps that much money into their 401K, if they started out with nearly nothing on their own, is probably going to be spending quite a bit of it on retirement. Yes, they could die suddenly, and then there would be taxes owed, but under normal circumstances they’ll be using a good portion of it, driving themselves below the cutoff. That’s part of the point of those Prudential commercials I keep seeing.

Here’s a idea for Trump: stop running your damn mouth and nobody would be even talking about attacking North Korea. No talking, no way of misinterpreting what is said. JFC, what a shitheel Trump is.

oh i agree with you 100%. if the plan and timing works out.

focusing only on the could die suddenly part - ie with more assets remaining than you planned on (and ignoring spouses for the moment) - you mitigate that by getting some insurance, or you start giving (if your family gets along) or you resign yourself that some estate assets will be liquidated to pay the tax ($1.8m).

Not necessarily, if they lived frugally to get there and continue to do so in retirement they can easily live off of the income generated off $5 million plus without ever having to touch the principal. Hell, they may even be able to keep adding to it in hopes of passing it on to their kids and grand kids.

So Kellywise the Clown crawls form the sewer to correct us on Trump’s classless phone call:

Conway appeared to acknowledge that Trump did, in fact, say the soldier knew what he signed up for, arguing the problem is instead that the media is leaving out the “full quote.” Conway pointed to Wilson’s own account of the conversation, pointing out the president followed up with some variation of “it’s never easy or it’s very difficult.”

“It’s just the haters being presumptively negative, as they always are,” Conway said. “But you know what’s tragic? That family just suffered a loss … and yet it gets immediately politicized because people of privilege think they can score cheap political points against the president.”

“That’s what we do find to be most disgraceful,” she added.

No Kelly, what’s disgraceful is you dropped this turd on live TV just a day after the family came out and confirmed Wilson’s recall of events and stated how upset they were over the call. In effect, you’re following your boss in accusing the family of being liars and showing even less class than he by accusing them of trying to “score cheap political points.”

Conway said Trump followed protocol of prior administrations, despite Trump himself claiming on Saturday that previous presidents did not reach out to the families of fallen soldiers.

“Sometime you call, sometimes you write, sometimes you go in, you receive the fallen soldier in a casket with an American flag draped on it, everyone, for a reason—the American flag is there for a good reason,” Conway said.

Even when the victims in this whole mess are black, Kelly can’t avoid firing up that air raid siren.

“You know what’s in his heart,” Conway insisted.

True. But I’ll say this: I think there’s a limit to how much you should be able to hand off to descendants. I support the estate tax for that reason. I would set it at college, a car, and a house.

i would like to try jesus but i’m unsure about which one to pick. some people are selling a jesus who says i can live in paradise forever without worrying about good deeds and by only having “faith” (??? not sure what that is) and sending lots of money in to the preacher. others are advertising a jesus that wants me to keep my wife in the kitchen, persecute gay people and islams, and make sure nobody ever says “happy holidays” ever again. still others say they will give jesus away for free but i have to be nice to weird foreigners and mexicans, even the ones who refuse to speak english. can that be right??

remember also that (and yes this is a generalization) this is not double taxation - ie a tax on money that’s already been taxed.

a good part of the estate tax is on the increase in the values of assets over time - ie unrealized gains - and those would not have been taxed at all (yet)

re: #218 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

in an ideal world, all taxes would be voluntary

in the u.s., they mostly are:

- you keep your own records
- you file your own reports / returns
- you pay (at this point it is a bit less voluntary) what you say you owe

some information is verified - mostly at the personal level - w-2, 1099, 1098 etc.
a large majority is not - even those requiring compliance, like charitable contributions - there are rules but you dont submit receipts.

most information is completely unverified - no one verifies a business’s income and expenses, or schedule C info.

and around 2% or less returns are ever even audited

re: #439 Hecuba’s daughter

It is unfair to characterize people who may have 5.49 to 10 million dollars “rich like Trump”. Professionals who grew up in modest circumstances without an inheritance, who are not even the top earners in their profession, but who earn a good income, perhaps in the $100,000 to $200,000 range, who are able to contribute the maximum to their 401(k) with a match from their employer, and who do not live extravagantly, can indeed accumulate that amount, mainly through their retirement funds. They are comfortable and affluent, but not truly rich. Their income does not even place them in the top 5%.

So they shouldn’t pay a single dime in estate taxes? The vast majority of Americans will never accumulate anywhere near that kind of wealth.

481
Hecuba's daughter  Oct 19, 2017 • 11:46:18am

Two additional comments on the estate tax:

1. My comment was not directed on the taxation but only on pointing out that people affected aren’t necessarily truly wealthy.
2. 401(k) money escaped taxes in the first place so that anything left over was indeed not a subject of double taxation.

Not so incidentally, the fact that planning can be used to reduce estate tax liability is a problem that should be fixed.

why is that?
whats wrong with buying an insurance policy to fund the tax and preserve the assets?
or giving away 14k a year to whoever you want
or setting up (legitimate) charitable giving?

look, any system can be gamed and when dollars are involved someone will figure out the best way how. some fair, some far too grey
