Why can the Nabisco Company get away with slapping the word “CRACKER” all over their products but if I mispronounce the country of Niger just once …

Though which one you want first depends on what kind of breakfast you’re talking about.

I’m sure Trump’s staff are doing everything they can to make sure he never has to say the word ‘Niger’:

“We honor the 4 brave soldiers who lose their lives in Ni-*BONG!!!*”

No, she jumped out of a moving car.

The call was received as they were in the car together.

The insanity of the right wing is incompatible with basic facts let alone common decency.

He’s attacking a Member of Congress for calling out Trump’s absolute disregard for a Gold Star family again. Trump lacks all empathy, and the problem isn’t the Gold Star family, or that a member of Congress repeated it. The problem starts and stops with Trump.

Meanwhile, the more we learn about the Niger mission and what happened, the more we should be investigating every action the Administration took and why it took days for the remains of one of the members of the team to be recovered and why it took weeks before the Trump admin even acknowledged the mission and why it took 2 weeks for the Pentagon to send investigators to figure out what happened, and why there were private contractors involved in the support/SAR effort.

The custom of former presidents not speaking out against their successors is just that, a custom, a habit if you will. It is not a law or a political principal or even really a tradition, since it is actually of fairly recent origin. Theodore Roosevelt came out of retirement and ran against his successor in 1912, for example.
If the Bushes want to perform a real service to the nation, they can take off the gloves and join the three Democratic ex-presidents in a no holds barred truth-bombing of the absurdly unqualified squatter in the White House. George H.W. Bush started his service to the nation as a torpedo-bomber pilot during World War II. He can end on the same note simply by saying in public what he obviously believes in private.

If he wasn’t so obtuse, he would have known that the Congresswoman was a good friend of the deceased and was in the car with the family as they went to pick up his body. Apparently the widow put the call on speakerphone so everyone in the car could hear it. And here we are.

Why is this deranged fucker running for the Senate rather than rotting in jail for dis-obeying the federal courts? (Purely rhetorical, it is all too obvious why.)
Roy Moore claims “it’s against the law” for players to kneel during national anthem

Roy Moore, the bombastic Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Alabama, claims NFL protesters who kneel during the national anthem are violating federal law.

Moore, in an interview with time.com published Wednesday, made the case that NFL players — and conceivably, anyone else — who fails to stand and put their hands over their hearts when the “Star-Spangled Banner” is played is not only unpatriotic, but a law breaker.

“It’s against the law, you know that?” Moore told the magazine. “It was a act of Congress that every man stand and put their hand over their heart. That’s the law.”

Roy Moore is an idiot. Normally I do not call people idiots but in this case the guy went to law school has been a judge, has been a Supreme Court Justice in Alabama and he is still an idiot. The controlling case is West Virginia State Board of Education v Barnette, 319 US 624 (1943). This was the Jehovah’s Witnesses flag salute case and the justices ruled students could not be forced into taking part in patriotic activities.

What is controlling here is the agreement between the NFL and the Players Association. I don’t know what’s in the agreement, but given the dithering by Roger Goodell, I’m pretty sure the current contract has nothing in it requiring players to take part in standing for the national anthem.

So in two ways, by both settled precedent in the Supreme Court, and by the employment contract I think Roy Moore is a complete idiot. However he’s such a pander bear to the nationalists and religious nutbars that of course this is going to happen.

Everyone is trying to explain what Trump said. I guess they are giving their view of Trump’s tone and meaning. That is all it is; their version.

Trump never served. His family never served. I bet he would have prevented one of his sons or his daughters from joining the military had any one of them attempted. Trump’s don’t do that. They are leaders. They don’t do the dirty work, the grunt work.

Maybe that is Trump’s tone, no matter what he says his ability to look down on everyone and everything else comes through to anyone hearing him.

That is what you signed up for becomes “you chose to do the grunt work, I would never take that chance to get killed or injured because I have a big ego and I am too valuable…you are not…by choice.”

Sorry, the way I see it is any thoughts in Trump’s Goopy Brain is all just “sucks to be you.”

I get the feeling the widow, mother, Congresswoman and friends of the young soldier picked that tone up from Trump pretty quick. I can see the shock on their faces turning to “do you believe this #*&@ as it hit them.

In Moore’s Holy Book, there’s a story about a Babylonian ruler who passed a law to force all of his subjects to bow to a golden idol. Three Hebrew boys refused to bow and were thrown in a fiery furnace.

I thought the moral of that story was that leaders shouldn’t force their subjects to display allegiance to symbols/objects. Guess that’s not how Moore sees things.

The commenter misses the point. The facts on the ground are *always* obscure when embedded troops are with foreign military units when something really bad happens. It’s the nature of warfare. Especially when all of the embed troops are all killed.

The point is that the POTUS should contact the families and give them his deepest condolences (as opposed to “warmest”) for their loss. On this fundamental level, dRump fucked the dog, and won’t own up to it. He’s an asshole.

My wife and I just got back from Scottsbluff. We just retired the Smart car.

It cost us $560 to retire it. We had to special order the tires three days ago, as no one around here stocks tires for a Smart.

With Winter approaching (though it was 82 today), and extensive tire wear, we needed new tires.

I did catch your comment at your photo page. About lenses and the look they bring? Th e latest generation of digital cinema cameras are ultra high res and precise. So much so that Cinematographers are having super sharp lenses made for film (each unique stock) that brought a certain look. Not the expensive cinema lenses with state of the art coatings are being taken apart, coatings removed, other mods applied to bring a certain look back in from just (boring, flat) ultra sharp and strong contrast.

Takeaway-The right look comes from unexpected places a lot of the time. And the guys with the most money have come full circle chasing what you did in a still and a $40 lens.

Note:

The Bellamy salute is a palm-up salute described by Francis Bellamy, the author of the American Pledge of Allegiance, as the gesture which was to accompany the pledge. During the period when it was used with the Pledge of Allegiance, it was sometimes known as the “flag salute”. Both the Pledge and its salute originated in 1892. Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazis adopted a salute which was very similar (but palm-down), and which was derived from the Roman salute, a gesture that was popularly (albeit erroneously) believed to have been used in ancient Rome.[1] This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.

From the wikipedia article:

The initial civilian salute was replaced with a hand-on-heart gesture, followed by the extension of the arm as described by Bellamy. Though the instruction called for the palm to be up, many found this awkward, and performed it with the palm down (see pictures above).

Retired, as in we had new tires put on it. I suppose I could order tires on-line and have them delivered to my door (which would take at least as long plus shipping plus UPS saying they won’t deliver stuff to my house because I am over sixty miles from their depot).

Then I would have to figure out how to get the tires to the tire shop in Scottsbluff (also sixty miles).

It was a lot easier just to ask the tire shop to order them, plus they have the supply chain and such.

Several of the women have detailed experiences of sexual assault and demanding of sexual favors for advancement in their career. More than 140 women in California politics signed a letter calling out systemic harassment at the Capitol. But very few women have filed formal complaints. They say they can’t trust the internal review system.

John Kelly reminds me of Graham Martin, the last US ambassador to South Vietnam. Martin lost his foster son in the War in 1965 but that event only seemed to harden his support for the failed war and fueled his malignant denial of facts that cost so many lives when he steadfastly refused to to prepare for evacuation as the NVA victory became apparent in 1975. I feel like Kelly has psychologically dug in similarly, that his grief turned toxic and has caused him to abandon introspection and dedicate himself to the very cribbed reactionary thinking that sent his son off to die in a war that should never have been fought.

John Kelly is still being a dick to Rep. Wilson:

In 2015, Wilson won praise from Miami Republicans for sponsoring the bill to name the long anticipated federal building after two [FBI] agents who became legends in local law enforcement.

At the dedication ceremony, James Comey, then director of the FBI, lauded Wilson’s legislation, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama three days before the April 2015 ceremony.

“Rep. Wilson truly did the impossible, and we are eternally grateful,” Comey said in his remarks.

Kelly tapped into his personal experience as the former head of the U.S. Southern Command headquarters in Doral, a position that often had him representing the Defense Department in local events. That included the dedication of the FBI regional building in Miramar, when he said Wilson’s remarks were jarring and self-serving.

“A congresswoman stood up, and in a long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise, stood up there in all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building, and how she took care of her constituents because she got the money, and she just called up President Obama, and on that phone call, he gave the money, the $20 million, to build the building, and she sat down,” Kelly told reporters.

In the interest of making his Muslim ban look like something other than a Muslim ban, you may recall that Donald Trump added Chad and Venezuela to the list.

Maddow connects the dots on how Trump adding Chad to his travel ban may have gotten soldiers killed in Niger (goes to Raw Story, more at the link):

When President Donald Trump’s White House instituted the travel ban and randomly added the African country of Chad to the list, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow says it may have destabilized the region. That lack of allied troops could have then been the cause of the deaths of the four soldiers killed two weeks ago in Niger.

Maddow began by walking through the extensive history of the groups of African and French fighters who have managed to battle Islamic extremists like ISIS and Boko Haram in central Africa and actually win. Most of these groups are headquartered in Chad, because the best of the best soldiers managed to run out the majority of the terrorist groups.

Yet, somehow, Chad ended up on Trump’s travel ban list. When it did, there was an uproar of foreign policy experts who warned this was a terrible decision because it would destabilize the region and isolate American troops fighting there. Both the State and Defense Departments were also opposed to Trump’s decision to put Chad on the list, because they knew it would cause military problems in the area. But the Trump administration demanded it.

I’ve been after everyone I know (and a couple people here) who claimed that Kelly would somehow be a moderating influence on Trump.

Regardless of what Kelly thinks, he knew what Donald Trump was when he signed on to his staff as the shortest DHS Chief in history then Chief-of-Staff. His honour and integrity went out the window the second he said, “Yes sir, Mr. Trump.”

I’ll fess up. I overestimated the asshole. Yesterday I had to take time out because I started crying at Trump’s grotesque inhumanity. (Incidentally, at least two other members of the local People’s Democratic Club — the lefty Dems round here — had the same reaction, which kinda made me feel better.) Today, I’m not crying and I’m not incapacitated, but General Kelly is on my permanent shit list. He can go down with the big whale. Presumably we can’t get him on any of the election interference, so it’s basically down to making sure that his reputation is permanently ruined.

here is a truly pitiful imitation of a progressive, performed for me by someone who at the same time wonders what i could possibly have against trump’s voter fraud investigation:

I am for no globalist policy, and maximum income, a guaranteed annual income, guaranteed housing, guaranteed gainful employment, guaranteed healthcare, a wealth tax, antitrust enforcement, reduced population, publicly funded elections, and many other things which would be good for Citizens.

You are for kowtowing to the Oligarchs Democrat Republican duopoly.

I make you look like and corporatist right wing hack, and that is what you are.

but also

Blah blah blah. If the investigation is bad it will come out in the findings and data which will be released.

You just parrot a Democrat talking point because you are afraid of what may be found.
I am never against studies of issues and remain neutral on the studies until findings of a study.

You prefer no study so you can keep blathering your partisan propaganda.

“democrat talking point” - sure, that’s how all the bernie supporters talk…

Spit.

Appellate Court issues a stay from the lower court decision on the undocumented teen held by ICE seeking an abortion.

The court allowed the government to insert Christian theology into its assertions why she should not be allowed to obtain an abortion.

One day after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to allow a teenage immigrant in the country without authorization to have an abortion in Texas, an appeals court temporarily blocked the order and set oral arguments for Friday morning on whether to allow the procedure to occur.

The order by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia still allowed the 17-year-old to receive abortion counseling and a sonogram — required first steps for an abortion in Texas — but blocked the lower court’s order requiring officials to let the teen receive an abortion Friday or Saturday.

An emergency appeal by Eric Hargan, acting secretary of the Health and Human Services Department, argued that the teenager is in the agency’s custody and is therefore subject to its policy of refusing to facilitate abortions.

… and …

But in his appeal, Hargan argued that the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly recognized that the government has a “legitimate interest in promoting childbirth and protecting the life of an unborn child.”

Policies that encourage childbirth over abortion do not place an improper burden on Doe, Hargan added, because she has two avenues for leaving federal custody — voluntarily returning to her country, or finding a relative or other suitable sponsor to take temporary custody of her.

No pass. When he and Trump were at the Coast Guard Academy, where Trump was presented a sword, Kelly offered to slay the press for Trump.

That is entirely opposite the affirmation I made in the Navy, which is to uphold the Constitution (that includes freedom of the press).

He lied about Rep. Wilson’s support of both the FBI and veterans.

He used racist Jim Crow (southern apartheid) terminology to demean three African-American.women in a wingnut trifecta.

He went in knowing who Trump was (having already attacked another Gold Star family on the campaign trail, and attacking the character of John McCain’s capture and torture in North Vietnam).

He volunteered for this.

Conservatives are starting to swarm the KellyBlueFalcon hashtag at Twitter to attack Gold Star families and veterans expressing outrage at Kelly and Trump tonight.

(I finally got the MSNBC clip to play, and the one that came after from the mother and father whose son was killed in Syria. I am in tears. Even if Trump had empathy, he could not possibly understand the pain of that mother, but I can. This whole maladministration is reprehensible and disgusts me.)

New Battle of the Alamo is brewing over Texas shrine revamp.

The project has raised the ire of some conservatives, who worry that the Battle of the Alamo will be sanitized by “political correctness” at a time when Confederate monuments are being removed across the country. Even though the Alamo battle was well before the Civil War, some of the participants were slaveholders.

It’s the same thing with the folks to proclaim exclusive rights to the very concept of patriotism and yet seem to venerate the Confederate flag over the US flag instead. We’ve managed to become a country where the concept of patriotism has been co-opted by those whose allegiance is to literal enemies of the Union instead. But of course, it’s the people who point this out or try to protest their own mistreatment that are somehow dragging down the ‘greatness’ of this country.

And yet again, we see how often those fucking people are given the immediate and almost infinite benefit of the doubt by the media, the most charitable impressions despite being attacked as literal ‘enemies of the people’ by the folks they run interference for…while the protesters and actual persecuted peoples are treated like sub-human animals and traitors for taking a knee, or daring to not treat Trump like a glowing god of all things American, or just fucking existing.

It’s just so goddamn exhausting to wake up to this shit every single fucking day and see it only get exponentially worse by the fucking hour.

We chose to accept Kelly because he seemed like someone who, even though we knew he was conservative, had lines he wouldn’t cross, that he knew when to stop. That was the bargain we thought we were getting into. Come to find out, though, he doesn’t. We expected a soldier to respect some things as a soldier. But he doesn’t, and he’s willing to use his position as a soldier to get what he wants, which is the last thing we want soldiers to do.

I attended the US Military Academy briefly(I’m considered a Veteran by law-with an honorable discharge from the US Army, though I usually don’t refer to myself as a Veteran), my Father is a Veteran, my Uncle is a Veteran-he nearly died in Vietnam and still suffers from the affect of poisoning-likely Agent Orange. Other relatives fought in Korea, WWII, WWI, ect. One of the things my family going back had to deal with is very obvious to anyone who understands history. Black men who served honorably and contributed to US Military success around the world, were discriminated against, beaten, humiliated, and lived under the boot of white supremacy as a reward for their service. Not only did they suffer, but these circumstances caused suffering in many ways for our family.

Family is important to many people. It traditionally has held a great importance to members of Black America.(I’ll post my Ancestry stuff here in a bit. It has been a gift seeing what the community here has shared) And as what was posted above:

Nice post.

Having grow up around a lot of Black families and still living in an area with Black Families and having several Black business clients I think that bit I put in bold type is really an important part of this whole mess.

It is something many White people do not understand. Family has a different meaning in the community. If you are a help, a saving grace to someone Black you are automatically family. If you are down on your luck and a Black family takes you in and you are appreciative…you are family.

This whole thing just disgusts me. Kelly making it a thing was disgusting too. He gets outraged by the Congresswoman listening in. Well Mr. Marine tough guy, the Orange Bozo you are making excuses for got this whole ball rolling by lying about contacting the families.

It was a kid explaining his dog ate his homework thing. Trump at the time the question was asked didn’t have any letters written or calls made. He probably never even intended it.

But Trump can’t be caught being Donald Trump, he has to make up some BS and that started it all. Kelly should step the fuck off. He had no business getting involved in this to the extent he did.

So why did he? Well, I am considering he was more upset about the Black Congresswoman than anything regarding the family and or Trump. Kelly exposed his White ass…because he couldn’t have a Black woman putting his boy down.

There sure are a lot of bare White asses being exposed.

But this is an attack on a woman for opposing men, a minority for attacking a white, and a Senator for attacking the president.

While I’m obvious not black (Filipino here), we have much the same concept of extended family, where close friends of the family are otherwise treated as familial as well. Several of my parents close friends and Filipino colleagues were treated as ‘Titos’ or ‘Titas’, uncles or aunts, to our family, with our blood uncles and aunts called ‘Uncle ___’ or ‘Aunt ____’ as a means of distinction. Though regardless, ‘Titos’ and ‘Titas’ were still uncles and aunts to us in all but blood.

When NBC first started to use Nicole Wallace I was suspicious she would just be another GOP mouthpiece. I will gladly give her credit in that she may be one of the better people on TV speaking about the Republicans and conservatives.

She was on the Today show this morning talking about this Trump mess over contacting the Johnson family. She nails the main point…Trump did this to himself and Kelly has to cover for him. Col. Jack Jacobs gets in a good point that all Kelly can do is control what goes into Trump, not what comes out.

General Kelly should take the advice and realize all he is doing is acting as the poor guy that follows the circus elephant with the big dust pan and broom cleaning up after the beast he is following.

All he did yesterday was reach into the dust pan and fling some shit at all of us. He doesn’t realize how much he got stuck to him now and how much it stinks.

Here are Nicole’s comments from this morning.

Actually, even if you do accept their agenda, they still won’t be pleased. Knuckling under to bullies doesn’t make them happy with you, it just makes you more of a target. Only joining their tribe will make them ‘happy’ with you. That’s why they have so many tribal recognitions, from the specific phrases of wingnut they say to the uniforms they wear - because their only agenda is to hate those not of their tribe, and so they need to recognise the ‘other’. I would remind those what John Kelly did during his brief stint at DHS:

He was the guy who ordered (under Muslim Ban 1.0) everyone in transit on visas to the USA from the targeted countries to be denied entry.

He was also the guy who ordered rounding up the green cards of people who were lawful residents of the nation (regardless of country), which caused hundreds of lawyers to descend on airports and fight pro-bono for their rights.

That’s the John Kelly that people have been holding forth would be a “moderating influence on Trump”

“I’ve never counted, but I’ve been wearing them almost 30 years,” Wilson told Politifact in 2010. “It’s almost like a fetish. … I have hundreds.”

You can get confused at Kelly’s statement that Wilson “listened in” on a conversation that was on a fucking speakerphone in the car she was riding in and therefore she had no fucking choice but to listen in. You can roll your eyes at Kelly calling Donald Trump “brave” for reaching out to the family of a fallen soldier, as if Donald Trump has ever done anything braver than eat one too many Big Macs in a single sitting. You can even shake your head at Kelly’s beyond ignorant invocation of the past when “Women were sacred, looked upon with great honor.”

Good article on the hats.

‘My heritage’

Wilson is named after her grandmother. The elder Frederica hailed from the Bahamas, where ladies always wore hats and gloves.

“It’s my heritage,” says Wilson.

In grade school it was feminine hats and bows. In middle school it was a Davy Crockett style that raised the eyebrows, and the ire, of school administrators. The dean called her father in one day to complain about the tomboyish hats.

She and her father did not budge. The Davy Crockett hats stayed.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump, Kelly and the right wing echo chamber continue to try and slag Rep. Wilson and the reality is that all the right wing has done is lie about Wilson.

Every step of the way has been a lie, and this morning Trump tried to change the tactic to claim that what Wilson did was eavesdropping and somehow improper.

The reality is that the WH called to Johnson’s family while they were in a car with family friend Rep. Wilson, and Wilson overheard the entire exchange.

Nothing that Wilson said about the exchange has been rebutted by the WH. Instead, Trump and his vapid attack dogs are trying to make this about Wilson, not Trump’s tin ear and lack of empathy.

Attack the family. Attack the friend of the family for standing up against a craven bully who absolutely lacks empathy. Then get COS Kelly to lie and make up BS on top of things:

This is all the admin does. They lie.

But the lies aren’t resulting in the kind of damage to the admin one would normally expect because they simply pivot to the next lie and act as though they haven’t done anything wrong.

The media keeps getting played and they keep focusing on the wrong things.

It’s hard to keep up with things, but the GOP is trying to gut the safety net again to push massive tax cuts the nation can’t afford so that millionaires can rape the Treasury and everyone else is stuck with the burdens, including massively expanding the debt and deficits.

All the while, the Mueller investigation continues as do all the other investigations.

Even the investigation into what happened in Niger is just starting - and the Admin has a lot of questions it needs to answer about delayed SAR and diplomatic responses, and whether their action on the travel ban played a role (it’s plausible).

Oh, and Trump’s Nazi brigade engaged in more violence, including firing on a crowd last night. Domestic terrorists of the white supremacist variety did what they’ve done before - engage in terrorism and trying to silence their opponents. Trump however thinks that they’re good people.

Trump described her father-in-law’s remark as coming during a broader comment on Sgt. La David Johnson’s commitment to serving his country.

Why is she citing Eric Trump “seeing” a transcript—why is the not-in-government son of the POTUS seeing anything official?

[Embedded content]

And we have to keep in mind when Trump made the call. I don’t know the exact time, but I’m pretty sure it was done after he had the press conference and was asked about his response to the families of the soldiers killed in Niger.

He was rushed into it because he was caught having done nothing to that point.

Would he even have called her had he not been caught being tone deaf to the whole Niger thing?

Trump brought all of this on himself. If he was a decent human being this would never have happened. He is a charlatan showman devoid of human dignity.

And I said in a comment yesterday, I bet the tone of his call was evident to everyone in that car. He probably was a little pissed off he had to make that call. He probably wasn’t in the right mind to have to make it. And that is Trump being the Big Orange Bull in the White House and paying for it.

Actually, we are all paying for it.

Another thing, at least Congresswoman Wilson was there to represent the U.S. Government for the young widow. Unlike the “Commander in Chief” who had to be reminded of his duty.

A lot of them are itching for blood.

It would be better to deradicalize them than to have to have police and the national guard put them down when they act out, but Republican propagandists would have to develop consciences, and work to undo the damage they’ve done.

I watched the whole thing this morning. She gave a lovely tribute to Agents Grogan and Dove. And thanked members of both parties in Congress and Director Comey. Kelly banked on no one finding this. He’ll have right wingers believe him but he shit his credibility elsewhere.

You are doing a nice job as a fluffer.

You have all kinds of stuff in your comments to water down what everyone is talking about. Very subtle.

Maybe the kid will grow up to be a big game hunter like his uncles. They can start a savings account so he can afford those arranged hunts in Africa and other places. Then when he is older he can have real trophy heads on plaques instead of the cute ones in his room now.

Cute!

I just learned a new word. Guess which one.

Fact checking is irrelevant for the right if enough people just believe what they want to believe independent of reality.

Whatever it was. I think he was banking and SHS is doing it that people would take the word over John F. Kelly, white general from Boston over Fredericka Wilson, black Congresswoman from Miami. Lawrence O’Donnell did a great job last night talking about the attitudes in Kelly’s neighborhood because he grew up nearby.

re: #420 Ace-o-aces

I found a quote:

OK, so she just likes loud hats. At least she admits it, unlike Clarke who has to come up with BS excuses for his hat and pins.

I have a friend that will not be caught dead without a hat if not out at her pool, and even there she wears one when not in the pool. She has hundreds of hats she has collected over the years. She gave my wife a couple hats of hers in case she lost her hair during chemo treatments, luckily my wife’s hair got a bit thinner during treatments but never all fell out.
