It’s easy to be a “brave” republican when you don’t have to face the voters during the next election.

What Flake and Corker are doing is as brave as it gets for Republicans these days.

Compared to the rest of the wimps in the party that is.

I think Trump has grabbed them…if you know what I mean.

I had a rare semi-optimistic thought today, and such special occasions should be shared.

Trump is going to try to get tax cuts done, and that is inevitably going to result in Trump telling exceptionally stupid lies about the tax cuts that are too much for even a mostly both-siderist media to accept.

So the hypothetical scenario of Trump being responsible for a failure of the GOP to get tax cuts done (if that failure happens) is more plausible than I first thought.

Such a failure, if it happens, will not go unpunished by the GOP donor class. IMO that really would set off the long-awaited GOP civil war between the donor class (tax cuts uber alles) and the base (their resentments uber alles).

Flake: “The outcome of this is in our hands. We can no longer remain silent, merely observing this train wreck, passively, as if waiting for someone else to do something. The longer we wait, the greater the damage, the harsher the judgment of history.”

And therefore, I quit.

I’ll be quite happy if he does anything to actually, you know, stop this train wreck, since he’s one of the few people in the whole damn country who can actually do a fucking thing about it before the next election, but hey.

And if he’s a rat fleeing a sinking ship, he might get the rest of the rats with him. He’s still a fucking rat, though.

I made a comment like that last week in regards to his telling Ladavid Johnson’s wife “he knew what he signed up for.”

I think he looks at joining the military for regular lower class people…not the Trumps. It’s why he fought the draft and why I think he would never let his kids join.

The dude is scum. Hopefully the military is getting the message not to trust their leader.

Also, Jay Cost is correct about Bob Corker: “He gave the president the benefit of the doubt, even when there wasn’t any.”

Neither Corker nor Flake deserve too much credit for spine. But, better some spine, and better some spine late than no spine ever.

They simply do not care. Facts be damned…it is hits/views/ratings they need. And they feed those that sit at the table eating what is served. And if it gets those hits/views/ratings they will keep on it, recycle it, look for new angles, etc. until it stops.

I think we are about this >< close to people just making shit up. Why not? No one looks into it to see if it is legit.

This feels like an opening in Alabama:

But plenty of Alabamans were happy to talk about Moore. In their telling, the race is the political equivalent of the shrug emoji ― potential voters are throwing their hands in the air in some combination of disgust, befuddlement and bemusement.

Sadly, I think plenty of Republicans will still vote for Moore because of the R after his name. But one can be hopeful, maybe Moore’s ineptitude will result in Republicans staying home?

The House has overwhelmingly passed a package of financial sanctions against North Korea in legislation named for Otto Warmbier, the young Wyoming man who died this year from brain damage he suffered while imprisoned in the Asian nation.

The vote late Tuesday on the measure was 415-2. Northern Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie cast one of the two no votes.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration, which has not yet been scheduled.

The bill would impose heavy economic and financial punishment on North Korea for developing nuclear-capable missiles and weapons of mass destruction despite world diplomatic efforts to discourage the armaments. The bill would impose conditions and oversight on foreign banks that seek to open American accounts for any North Korean or any agent for North Korea that arranges “the export of goods, services, technology or natural resources, including energy exports and minerals or their derivatives” except for humanitarian needs.

Massie, in a statement Wednesday, said he voted no on the bill because “non-military sanctions have largely proven to be ineffective. Worse yet, they create tensions with our natural allies, move us closer to war, impose hardships on American companies doing business abroad, and punish civilians in the targeted country who would otherwise be supportive of the U.S.”

“non-military sanctions have largely proved to be ineffective”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk noted on Twitter that Tesla’s solar team could indeed outfit Puerto Rico with power facilities that could be used to generate and store power reserves when the existing grid isn’t available, as it has been after the U.S. territory faced the devastation of hurricane Maria. Now, Tesla is showing that it’s making good on its promise of help, with significant progress being made on one solar generation/storage facility on the island.

So this article says that the first group of 300 Whitefish contractors arrived in PR on Sept. 26th and they expected to scale up to 1000.

Can’t find anything on how many are there now total though, but it has been a month so I assume somewhere between 300-1000.

The first group of Whitefish Energy employees started work on the island upon their arrival Sept. 26. As of Thursday, Whitefish Energy had 300 employees and subcontractors temporarily relocated in Puerto Rico. The company expects to have a total of 1,000 people to be working on restoring power.

Classifying libertarians in the US is a similarly pointless exercise. And yet, DoJ is led by someone who seems to have derived their ideas about marijuana straight from Harry J. Anslinger’s playbook. Minus some of the more colorful rhetoric, of course:

By the tons it is coming into this country — the deadly, dreadful poison that racks and tears not only the body, but the very heart and soul of every human being who once becomes a slave to it in any of its cruel and devastating forms…. Marihuana is a short cut to the insane asylum. Smoke marihuana cigarettes for a month and what was once your brain will be nothing but a storehouse of horrid specters. Hasheesh makes a murderer who kills for the love of killing out of the mildest mannered man who ever laughed at the idea that any habit could ever get him…

I firmly believe had Clinton won, we would be on the road to gradual legalization. I still believe we are to some degree but I believe a Clinton DOJ while not supporting federal legalization would have left states alone that are legalizing it.

Trump and his allies don’t see them as people with rights or deserving of respect. This man. He raised a daughter who is attending one of the most prestigious universities in this country. People say undocumented immigrants are criminals. Do these people want every civil violation they’ve done to haunt them forever? I’ll admit here guys. I’ve underaged drank. I’ve smoked marijuana. I saw my regular doctor this morning because I had a depression episode last week (lots of tears and inability to function) and she referred me to a psychiatrist, who may advise therapy &/or medication adjustment (I am on some for a different condition). There are things that can be done, some cheap, some expensive unless you have good insurance. Please know that and be kind to yourself.

My crash was precipitated by Trump’s sheer meanness in relation to Mrs Johnson. I have talked with three other people in the last week who have also burst into tears over similar provocations. As the doctor says, that does not mean you’re crazy but it may mean you could use a little help.

There is no good news any more from this administration. Those who voted for the president* - what good news have they received in the past 9 months?

Read every post on this thread - the news that should be good about Puerto Rico getting power restored - is bad. The media hypes up a so called argument with the mayor and makes sure - both sides. Slowly and surely all the GOP senators are supporting the defrocked judge from Alabama for the senate. Children are being separated from their parents by whim of the new SS

Everywhere, within and without of the country is doom and gloom. I turn into a person who no longer reads listens or watches news. I pin my faith on the children, grandchildren and hope beyond reality that what I shall never see will be better.

I so miss Obama. He made even bad news look good.

Massively hike the park fee, but open up federal land to corporate exploitation for peanuts.

It’s the exact opposite of what should be done. If a company wants to mine/log, they’d have to pay far more for the resource, which then subsidizes national park system.

It’ll never happen but we need an amnesty. I don’t care how politically charged that word is. People like Vivianna’s father are human beings. And that’s the big thing that separates the issue. I’ve jaywalked. I don’t think anyone in their right mind thinks I should be punished retroactively for that. This man has been here a long time. Let him stay. Let him see his children fulfill his dreams for them.

Backwoods_Sleuth  Oct 25, 2017 • 4:13:47pm

the plot thickens:

Whitefish Energy asserts that its expertise in “rural and rugged areas” makes it uniquely qualified for the job of restoring power to Puerto Rico. According to the company, it was the first willing to get on the ground and make things happen, and was not frightened away by Puerto Rico’s debt load. Techmanski had been on vacation in Puerto Rico earlier in the summer, engaged in initial discussions with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority after Hurricane Irma, which had caused minor damage to the grid. Chiames told BuzzFeed News that after Hurricane Maria decimated the island, someone with a satellite phone was able to get ahold of Techmanski, who made it to Puerto Rico as quickly as possible and began laying the groundwork for the partnership to follow.

“someone with a satellite phone” you say?

how convenient…

buzzfeed.com

also this bold faced lie:

Arc has experience working with restoring power in areas affected by hurricanes and winter storms. But neither its workforce nor the one hired in Florida necessarily have the sort of mountainous experience that supposedly made Whitefish Energy a good fit for the contract. “This is no job for amateurs,” said a Montana native and utility expert who requested anonymity due to his continued affiliation with the industry. “Hiring people in Florida might make sense if they had any idea how to do mountainous terrain, but otherwise it makes no sense. They likely have no experience in high-tension overland wiring, where you have a mile between utility lines.”

re: #245 KGxvi

Also, I like the bit in there from Simpson about calling it legalization rather than amnesty. Don’t know if that’ll work this time around, but it does sound better, I think.

Ultimately, it boils down to whether the goal is to grant them Citizenship or Permanent residency.

Amnesty would seem to suggest Citizenship whereas legalization would suggest Permanent Residency.

As a legal immigrant myself I am in favor of the latter.

Really? I dont watch any of them much. I haven’t for years. When there is huge breaking news I will flip between both.

Do you like Rachel, Hayes, Lawrence, Ali or Joy? I think ALL of them are loads better than CNN’s crew.

I like them, but get what I need on twitter.

I’m one of those, “why does Rachel take so fucking long to get to the point”

I can easily listen to CNN in the background all day. I like the panels!!!! So weird, yes.

Out of something like 93 million votes over that 17 years. 1 in 172,000 may have been an improper vote.

And the number is likely to go down further. So for this, the GOP will now claim all the outcomes wrong, push even more restrictions and further limit vote, thereby suppressing votes for hundreds of thousands of people to prevent a rare occurrence.

Let’s not forget that Jared Kushner was registered to vote in two states, and that he also was listed as female on his voter registration form in NY.
